HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Reno County Fire Administrator Travis Vogt told the Board of County Commissioners on Tuesday why he asked for the purchase of a UTV for one of the county's fire districts.
"Reno County has never owned any UTV apparatus," Vogt told the board. "The City of Hutchinson, they were the first ones in the area to start utilizing that piece of equipment. They recently have upgraded their units, they use them so much. In their use and from talking to their staff, they are greatly needed. We've actually had to call on the city of Hutch several times when we have issues with access along riverbanks and in trees, where you can't get a regular pickup or heavy brush truck."
This won't be the only one the county needs, most likely.
"My goal, when I took this position, was to get three or four UTV apparatus and spread them throughout the county, so that we have, I have them strategically placed," Vogt said. "Not every district needs one, but we have one, basically to help cover all the county and this one would be for Buhler, but it would be available to respond to southwest Reno County if that was the need. That's my goal."
The Commission approved the purchase of a 2023 Can-Am HD10 from Agri Center, a 75-gallon skid from Prairie Poly Manufacturing, and an 82 x 12 Bulldog trailer from K&K Sales, LLC for a cost not to exceed $32,000.
