HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson YMCA is further along toward having the goal pledged for its new facility before breaking ground. David Foster is excited about the progress.
"We're a little over halfway now," Foster said. "We've had a good start to the new year and had some meetings recently with some folks in the community and also our architect, so we're getting a little bit closer to finalizing some actual designs and plans and exactly what our new facility will look like. It's just a really exciting time to be part of the Y and look forward to the future of what the Y will be eventually, as well."
Foster said they have made one decision about how the Y will go forward.
"We've pretty much determined that we would be getting rid of our current facility, eventually," Foster said. "It's just more cost-effective to do that, believe it or not, and build new."
The hope is still to have the new facility in roughly the same footprint next to Hutchinson High School.
"The great part about that though is, having the current facility, we can build most, if not all the new one before we, you know, have to vacate the current facility, so there will be minimal, if any downtime in the transition. Of course, there may be a day or two here and there. You know, with construction, you never know, but it's not going to be a multiple week or month closure."
The goal before groundbreaking is $20 million in fundraising. Foster said they are just over $10 million right now.
