KC Police officer shot during traffic stop is released from hospital

KANSAS CITY— A Kansas City Police officer shot during a traffic stop on Monday is now out of the hospital. He will continue to recover at home, according to KCPD Captain Jake Becchina.

Just after 10p.m. Monday, police conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle near 46th and Benton in Kansas City, according to Officer Jake Becchina. Officers were conducting an initial investigation regarding potential impairment on the part of the male driver.

Additional officers responded to the scene to assist. The officers were in the process of placing the suspect into custody at which time the interaction escalated.

The suspect later identified as Dwayne A. Barnes was able to access a firearm and discharge it, striking one of the officers. Additional officers were able to get the suspect into custody and gain control of the firearm.

The injured officer was transported to the hospital.  Barnes is facing two counts of Assault in the 1st Degree, two counts of Unlawful Use of a Weapon, four counts of Armed Criminal Action and Resisting Arrest, according to the Jackson County Attorney's office.  He is being held on a $200,00o bond.
