HUTCHINSON, Kan. — For Allen Samuels CDJR Teacher of the Month, Faris Elementary First Grade Teacher Erissa Porras, it's great to see how much her class has grown this year.
"Mostly they have grown socially and emotionally," Porras said. "I mean, the academics, those are important, but creating future leaders is really what I've prided myself on, their growth for this year."

Porras continues the process of teaching what she calls how to be a human to her first graders.
"I teach a lot of it through playing, actually," Porras said. "Playing is the vessel that I think all of learning should be driving in. When we play, we're problem solving. When we play, we're being cooperative, when we play, we're being creative. I just do it all through play."

Porras said they are learning, they are having a blast and they don't even know it. It's a win for her and a win for them. She really feel Faris Elementary is a special place, too.
"Our staff is incredible," Porras said. "I've never been in a school as supportive and willing to bend over backwards for kids as the staff here at Faris."

The kids in her class received ice cream from Braums and pizza from Pizza Hut as part of her award as Teacher of the Month.
