Man armed with a knife dies in Kansas officer shooting

JOHNSON COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a fatal officer-involved shooting in Olathe.

Just before 6 p.m. Saturday, police were conducting a traffic stop in the 200 block of North Water Street, according to a media release.

During the course of the traffic stop, a separate and unrelated vehicle arrived on scene and the driver of that vehicle advanced on officers armed with a knife.

Two Officers discharged their department issued handguns striking the man.  The 58-year-old man, received medical attention by responding Officers as well as Johnson County Med-Act. He was pronounced deceased on scene. The Officers were not injured.

The Johnson County Officer Involved Critical Incident Investigation Team (OICIIT) was activated.  Investigators from multiple agencies are leading the investigation of the incident.  The Johnson County Crime Lab  processed the scene.

As a matter of standard procedure, the involved Officers have been placed on paid administrative leave pending the investigation by the Johnson County Officer Involved Critical Incident Investigation Team (OICIIT).
