HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Amtrak’s Southwest Chief was up and running again on Thursday. Both the east and west bound trains were left in Chicago and Los Angeles after severe winter weather hammered the Chicago area.
The westbound train arrived in Hutchinson around 3:20 this morning. The eastbound train will get to Hutchinson at 1:15 tomorrow morning.
The rail passenger carrier has taken steps to ensure that trains are not sent out in bad winter weather for fear of leaving passengers stranded for long periods of time. Amtrak spokesperson Marc Magliari also said on Wednesday that funding is going through Washington that would restore full service to long distance routes.
The Chief and other long distance routes have been on a three day per week schedule since October. At that time Amtrak said they hoped to put trains back to a full time schedule by spring.
