HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Motorists who have very early commutes or drive through the city overnight will notice a change in the traffic signals starting Friday. According to Hutchinson Public Works, the traffic signals will remain in normal operation 24 hours a day.
“After some discussion with engineering consultants, we have found that it is a safer practice to have the signals run steady all night instead of being on flash,” Cecil Weible with Hutchinson Public Works said. “If you pulled up on the red side, you cannot see that the other side is yellow, so you would assume that person also had a red.”
If you see a signal flashing, it will be for a specific reason from now on.
“If they are on flash, it's because we are doing maintenance to the intersection or a safety reason if something happens to that intersection,” Weible said. “The default is for them to go on flash and treat it as a four-way stop.”
The full changeover will be completed before the overnight hours Friday.
