WICHITA, Kan. — The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office is investigating an aggravated battery involving a Sedgwick County Department of Corrections employee that occurred Sunday, Sept. 27, 2026, at the Sedgwick County Juvenile Detention Facility, according to sheriff's department spokesman Branden Stitt.
Just after noon, deputies responded to Juvenile Detention Facility, along with Sedgwick County EMS and the Wichita Fire Department, after a 16-year-old male housed at the facility allegedly attacked a corrections employee.
The employee, a 38-year-old man, suffered serious injuries to his head that are not believed to be life-threatening. EMS transported him to a local hospital, where he remains hospitalized.
The Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the incident and will present the case to the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office for formal charging consideration.
The Sedgwick County Department of Corrections operates JDF. The facility is not operated by the Sheriff’s Office. The Sheriff’s Office is investigating the incident because it occurred at a Sedgwick County facility.
