Black Kettle Days this weekend in Moundridge

MOUNDRIDGE, Kan. — The 19th Annual Black Kettle Festival and Car Show kicks off on Friday, June 2.  

Friday’s festivities will begin with the Foam Zone Party from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Moundridge Public Library, celebrating the first day of their Summer Reading Program season.  

Then at Black Kettle Park, the Dridge Dash hosted by the Moundridge Recreation Commission will run from 5:45 p.m. to 6 p.m., with a community dinner of hamburgers and hot dogs by the Bradbury Company following at 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.  

Additionally, Chill will provide frozen refreshments in the evening, and Open Block Venue will be open for concessions and drinks.  

Starting at 7 p.m., a BBQ Contest, hosted by the Moundridge Lion’s Club, will take place at the Moundridge Swimming Pool. Starting at the same time, and until 11 p.m., a street dance with Sam Shilts, Landon Unruh, and Nikki Moddelmog opening for the Gus Burns Band will take over the evening.  

Friday’s event will cap off with the Moundridge Mile, starting at local restaurant, The Hub, and hosted by the Moundridge Recreation Commission.  

Saturday’s full day of activities will start at 7 a.m. with a Fly-In at the Moundridge Municipal Airport, and a breakfast hosted by Southwind Global Aviation.   

Registration will open at 7 a.m. for the 19th Annual Black Kettle Car Show at Wheatridge Park. Entries must be registered by 10 a.m. The car show will run until about 2 p.m. and will feature live DJ entertainment, door prizes, raffles, food vendors, and more.  

Vendors will include Meat Rubbers BBQ, Moundridge Lion’s Club BBQ, A beer garden by The Hub, and homemade ice cream by Dennis Friesen. 

At 7:30 a.m., Moundridge Recreation Commission will be hosting the Ridge Run, starting at the West Zion Church parking lot.  

Also, in the West Zion Church parking lot from 8 a.m. to noon will be a farmers market.  

From 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Opera Block Venue, people can check out a pop-up vendor event.  

The parade will line up at 9 a.m. at the Wollman Addition, and at 10 a.m. will proceed south on Christian Avenue to Krehbiel Street. 

Concurrently with the parade at 10 a.m., a BBQ contest and the People’s Choice Award will take place at the Moundridge Swimming Pool. Same place, from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., pulled pork sandwiches and sides will be served.   

Families can take their kids to fly kites at the soccer field south of the tennis courts at 10:30 a.m. Kites will be provided.  

11 a.m. Saturday will see both a corn hole tournament and pickleball tournament. The corn hole tournament, sponsored by Nex-Tech, is $20 per team and will take place at Wheatridge Park.  

The pickleball tournament, sponsored by Moundridge EMS, is $15 per person and will take place at the tennis courts across from the Moundridge City Pool.  

The West Zion Church will hold a chalupa lunch from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.  

Moundridge FFA will have a variety of events at Wheatridge Park, including kids carnival games, a dunk tank, and other activities from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.  

Also from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Cradle to Crayons will have monster-sized fun with monster cookies, monster art, and monster raffles at Wheatridge Park. There will also be kid tattoos, fun with colored hair, and a book walk.  

At the same time at Wheatridge Park, the Moundridge Fire Department will have Firemen’s Games.

The 19th Annual Black Kettle Festival and Car Show will culminate with the Moundridge High School Alumni Dinner at Pine Village. The doors will open at 5 p.m., the dinner will start at 6 p.m.
