Illegal immigrant, accused of shooting 12-year-old girl, faces a judge

SEDGWICK COUNTY— An illegal alien arrested in connection with an unintentional shooting that injured a 12-year-old Kansas girl made his first court appearance in the case Tuesday.

 Diego Moreno-Espinoza, 19, was charged with one count of aggravated battery, according the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office.

Just before 9a.m. July 3., police responded to a shooting with injury call in the area of South Hillside and George Washington Boulevard in Wichita, according to Wichita Police spokesman Bradly Wright.

Once on the scene, officers located a 12-year-old girl with a gunshot wound to her stomach. EMS arrived and took her to a hospital in serious but stable condition.

Based on preliminary investigations, police believe the 12-year-old was accidentally shot by Moreno-Espinoza in the 2300 block of South Laura Street.   Wichita police arrested Moreno-Espinoza who is also being held for federal immigration and custom enforcement.
