Kansas man killed after crash into Interstate sign during storm

JOHNSON COUNTY —One person died in an accident just after 9:30p.m. Thursday during the sever weather that rolled through Johnson County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2014 Toyota 4Runner driven by Travis Lee Sawyer, 44, Gardner, was southbound on Interstate 35 at Antioch Road. The driver lost control and hydroplaned due to high speeds and severe weather in the area. The SUV collided with an interstate sign and concrete post.

Sawyer was pronounced dead at the scene and was transported to the Johnson County Crime Lab. He was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.
