BUHLER, Kan. — Longtime USD 313 Board of Education member Laura Meyer Dick has announced her resignation after 17 years of service on the Buhler school board.
Meyer Dick submitted her resignation on July 9, and the resignation was formally announced during the Board of Education's July 13 meeting. The board accepted her resignation and scheduled a special meeting for Aug. 24 to appoint a replacement.
Meyer Dick will continue serving on the board through its August meeting before officially stepping down.
In her resignation letter, Meyer Dick said the decision was driven by changing personal and professional priorities.
“After 17 years, it is time to redirect my attention to other business needs and my family,” Meyer Dick wrote.
Meyer Dick said she first sought a seat on the board after being encouraged by a teacher to run for the position. Over the next 17 years, she became one of the district's longest-serving board members, helping guide the district through numerous initiatives and changes.
USD 313 Superintendent Cindy Couchman praised Meyer Dick's dedication and lasting impact on the district.
"Sadly, yes. She has resigned to focus on other business needs and family," Couchman said. "Her last meeting will be in August and we will have a reception to honor her 17 years of service on the Board of Education and to Buhler Schools."
Couchman said Meyer Dick's contributions have left a lasting mark on the district.
"Laura has created a legacy of service and will be hard shoes to fill for us," Couchman said.
The district will begin the process of filling the vacancy immediately. According to Couchman, USD 313 will advertise the open board position and schedule interviews with applicants in late August.
The Board of Education has set a special meeting for Aug. 24 to interview candidates and appoint someone to serve the remainder of Meyer-Dick's term.
