LYON COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a violent crash in Emporia.

Just before 6p.m. Sunday, police attempted to stop a 2012 Acura,  to conduct a welfare check at 18th and Rural Street in Emporia, according to Emporia Police Captain Ray Mattas.

The the car fled from the officer eastbound on 18th Street and the officer did not pursue the car. The vehicle continued at a high rate of speed onto Emporia State University campus. It left the road, went airborne, and crashed into the Emporia State University recreation building.

No one was in that area of the building when the car crashed into it. The driver of the car was initially trapped in the car.  Emporia Fire crews extricated the driver and transported the driver to Newman Regional for care. Due to the nature of this accident, police did not release the name of the driver or possible charges.  The rec center announced Monday afternoon the facility is temporarily closed.
