Sheriff: 8-year-old Kan. girl died after trapped in house fire

MONTGOMERY COUNTY—Authorities are working to determine the cause of a fatal Kansas house fire.

Just after 2p.m. Wednesday, sheriff's deputies were dispatched to 4761 E. US Highway 160 Independence, Kansas at the request of Cherryvale Rural Fire Department, according to Sheriff Ron Wade.

Deputies were advised fire crews were working a fully involved house fire where an 8-year-old girl was still inside. The City of Independence Fire and EMS arrived on scene, made entry into the residence to locate, remove her from from the residence and transport her to the Labette Emergency Room in Independence, Kansas where she was pronounced deceased.

 The cause of the fire is still under investigation by the Fire Marshal and Detectives, according to Wade.  Authorities have not released the child's name or additional details. The cause of death is also still undetermined.

Cherryvale Rural Fire, Independence Rural Fire, Sycamore Rural Fire, and the City of Independence Fire & EMS all responded to the fire.
