KANSAS CITY— Jackson County judge sentenced Jason Cook to six years in prison for the fatal Jan. 21, 2019 shooting of 23-year-old Cameron Douglas, according to the Jackson County attorney's office.
According to court records filed Dec. 21, Kansas City police were dispatched on Jan. 21, 2019, to the 5300 block of Oak Leaf Drive in Kansas City on a reported shooting.
Officers found the Douglas deceased on the front stoop of an apartment building.
Eight shell casings were found at the scene. Surveillance video showed an encounter between Douglas and the Coo.
Douglas turned to walk away, but stopped and turned back toward the Cook. Douglas had his hands in his pockets. Cook began shooting. Douglas ran and the Cook continued firing before he fled.
The prosecutor's office charged the defendant with Murder 2nd Degree and Armed Criminal Action, but the jury in October convicted him of the lesser charge of Involuntary Manslaughter and Armed Criminal Action. Prosecutors requested the judge order the maximum penalty of six years for those convictions.
