NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. on Wednesday named eight new vaccine policy advisers to replace the panel that he abruptly&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/kennedy-cdc-acip-vaccines-3790c89f45b6314c5c7b686db0e3a8f9">dismissed earlier this week</a>.

They include a scientist who researched mRNA vaccine technology and transformed into a conservative darling for his criticisms of COVID-19 vaccines, and a leading critic of pandemic-era lockdowns.

Kennedy's decision to “retire” the previous 17-member panel was widely decried by doctors' groups and public health organizations, who feared the advisers would be replaced by a group aligned with Kennedy's desire to reassess — and possibly end — longstanding vaccination recommendations.

The new appointees to the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices include Dr. Robert Malone, the former mRNA researcher who emerged as a close adviser to Kennedy during the measles outbreak.

Malone, who runs a wellness institute and a popular blog, rose to popularity during the COVID-19 pandemic as he relayed conspiracy theories around the outbreak and the vaccines that followed. He has appeared on podcasts and other conservative news outlets where he’s promoted unproven and alternative treatments for measles and COVID-19.

He has claimed that millions of Americans were hypnotized into taking the COVID-19 shots. He’s even suggested that those vaccines cause a form of AIDS. He’s downplayed deaths related to one of the largest measles outbreaks in the U.S. in years.

Other appointees include Dr. Martin Kulldorff, a biostatistician and epidemiologist who was a co-author of the Great Barrington Declaration, an October 2020 letter maintaining that pandemic shutdowns were causing irreparable harm. Dr. Cody Meissner, a former ACIP member, also was named.

Kennedy made the announcement in&nbsp;<a href="https://x.com/SecKennedy/status/1932899858920120692">a social media post</a>&nbsp;on Wednesday.

The committee, created in 1964, makes recommendations to the director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. CDC directors almost always approve those recommendations on how Food and Drug Administration-cleared vaccines should be used. The CDC’s final recommendations are widely heeded by doctors and determine the scope of vaccination programs.

COVID shot critic among Kennedy vaccine committee replacements

YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK, Wyo. (AP) — A bison gored a man Tuesday after a large group of visitors got too close to the animal in Yellowstone National Park, officials said.

The 30-year-old from Randolph, New Jersey, was treated for minor injuries after being gored around 9:45 a.m. in the Old Faithful area, according to a park statement.

Park officials didn’t release the man’s name or condition, saying what happened was under investigation and no more information was available for release.

He was the second person gored by a bison already this spring in Yellowstone. A 47-year-old Cape Coral, Florida, man had minor injuries after&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/man-gored-by-bison-yellowstone-6955186fe39f99936e805c3fccf832d3">being gored</a>&nbsp;in the Lake Village area May 7.

Standing up to 6 feet (2 meters) tall and weighing up to 2,000 pounds (900 kilograms), they are North America’s biggest land animal.

Park regulations require visitors to keep at least 25 yards (22.86 meters) away from bison and other large herbivores and 100 yards (91 meters) away from wolves and bears.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The drama in the audience rivaled the spectacle on stage on Wednesday at the Kennedy Center, where President&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/donald-trump">Donald Trump</a>&nbsp;went to the opening night of “Les Misérables” as he tightens his grip on the venerable performing arts institution.

It was his first time attending a show there since his election, and he was booed and cheered as he took his seat alongside first lady Melania Trump. Near the end of the intermission, someone loudly cursed his name, drawing applause. Several drag queens were in the crowd, their presence a protest against Trump’s complaints that the Kennedy Center had hosted too many drag shows in the past.

Despite the condemnation, the event had a MAGA-does-Broadway feel. Ric Grenell, the Trump-appointed interim leader of the Kennedy Center, was there, as were Vice President JD Vance and his wife, Usha. Before the show began, Attorney General&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-law-firm-white-house-executive-order-31228bd5bac1fcabbb243b603e1ccb57">Pam Bondi</a>&nbsp;chatted with guests and Health and Human Services Secretary&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/cdc-acip-vaccine-committee-9f58e1f004075b081718ff078de88d76">Robert F. Kennedy Jr.</a>&nbsp;took selfies. Laura Loomer, the conspiracy theorist who has advised Trump on personnel decisions, posted a video from a seat near the stage.

Trump walked the red carpet with the first lady when they arrived at the Kennedy Center, which he’s been&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-kennedy-center-board-chairman-firings-21cd0018c6e9f591d59becea8573d8c0">remaking in his image</a>&nbsp;while excising what he describes as liberal ideology.

“We want to bring it back, and we want to bring it back better than ever,” Trump said.

The Republican president has a particular affection for “Les Misérables,” the sprawling musical set in 19th-century France, and has occasionally played its songs at his events. One of them, “Do You Hear the People Sing?,” is a revolutionary rallying cry inspired by the 1832 rebellion against the French king.

The three-hour production featured singing and dancing, with the sounds of explosions and gunfire filling the theater as protesters and soldiers clashed on stage. For Trump’s critics, it was an unnerving echo of&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/donald-trump-gavin-newsom-immigration-protests-a8269425e604f6f03affdc627a2a5721">what’s unfolding in Los Angeles</a>, where Trump has deployed National Guard troops in response to protests over his deportation policies.

“Someone explain the plot to him,” California Gov. Gavin Newsom, a Democrat, wrote on social media.

Terry Gee, a bartender, bought his ticket for the show in November and didn’t mind Trump’s presence. It’s his sixth time seeing “Les Misérables,” and he said, “I’m going to enjoy the show regardless.”

Hannah Watkins, a nurse, only learned that Trump would be there when the Kennedy Center distributed information about extra security and she searched online to see what was happening.

“I’ve seen a lot of famous people so far, which is exciting,” said Watkins, who had claimed a spot near the VIP entrance with her mother. “Honestly, we just like ‘Les Mis’ and are excited to be here.”

Before Trump, presidential involvement in the Kennedy Center’s affairs had been limited to naming members to the board of trustees and attending the taping of its annual honors program in the fall.

But after returning to office in January, Trump stunned the arts world by firing the Kennedy Center’s longtime director and board and replacing them with loyalists, who then named him as chairman. Trump promised to overhaul its programming, management and even appearance as part of an effort to put his stamp on the national arts scene.

His latest moves have upset some of the center’s patrons and performers.

Sales of subscription packages are said to have declined since Trump’s takeover, and several touring productions, including “Hamilton,” have canceled planned runs at the center. Actor Issa Rae and musician Rhiannon Giddens scrapped scheduled appearances, and Kennedy Center consultants including musician Ben Folds and singer Renée Fleming resigned.

Understudies may have performed in some roles Wednesday night because of boycotts by “Les Misérables” cast members, but Trump said he wasn’t bothered by anyone skipping the performance.

Since returning to the White House in January, Trump has adopted a more aggressive posture toward the arts. The White House has taken steps to cancel millions of dollars in previously awarded federal humanities grants to arts and culture groups, and Trump’s budget blueprint&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/national-endowment-arts-grants-resign-rescinded-d001ce166f50de965b6a226f5d5a672a">proposed eliminating</a>&nbsp;the National Endowment for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Trump has also targeted Smithsonian museums by signing&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-smithsonian-executive-order-improper-ideology-558ebfab722f603e94e02a1a4b06ed4d">executive orders to restrict their funding</a>&nbsp;and by attempting to fire the director of the National Portrait Gallery.

The president characterized previous programming at the Kennedy Center as “out of control with rampant political propaganda” and said it featured “some very inappropriate shows,” including a “Marxist anti-police performance” and “lesbian-only Shakespeare.”

The Kennedy Center, which is supported by government money and private donations, opened in 1971 and for decades has been seen as an apolitical celebration of the arts.

It was first conceived in the late 1950s during the administration of Republican President&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/dwight-eisenhower">Dwight Eisenhower</a>, who backed a bill from the Democratic-led Congress calling for a National Culture Center. SEDGWICK COUNTY—A Kansas woman accused in the death of a 7-year-old boy was scheduled to return to court Wednesday for a preliminary hearing before Judge Sean Hatfield.

  Tasha Diane Dillard, 25, Wichita, waived her preliminary hearing and the case will be set for arraignment at a later date, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office.

She has been charged with 1st degree murder and 7 counts of aggravated endangering a child, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office.

On a Sunday afternoon in March, police responded to a call of a shooting at an apartment in the 3700 block of E Ross Parkway, according to Wichita Police Captain Aaron Moses. The caller reported that someone had been shot and that a child was bleeding.

When officers arrived, they found 7-year-old Davion Gunter suffering from a gunshot wound to his torso. Davion was transported to a local hospital, where he was&nbsp; pronounced deceased.

At the scene, officers found seven other children and multiple adults. Wichita Police homicide investigators and the Exploited and Missing Children’s Unit responded immediately, conducting interviews and gathered evidence.

As a result, police took Dillard into custody, and the children were placed in protective care. Dillard remains jailed on a&nbsp; bond of $500,000.&nbsp;

 A Lenexa resident discovered a bobcat kitten had found its way inside their home, likely seeking shelter from the storm.


The Animal Control Officer safely captured the young feline and kept it warm and secure overnight. 

The next day, with clearer skies, the kitten was safely released and happily reunited with its mother nearby.

DETROIT (AP) —Shares of General Motors rose Wednesday after announcing plans to invest $4 billion to shift some production from Mexico to U.S. manufacturing plants as the automaker navigates tariffs that could drive prices higher.

President Trump&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-tariffs-automakers-factories-relief-25a400c98e02c01c8c54502384e267e1">signed</a>&nbsp;executive orders in April, relaxing some of his 25% tariffs on automobiles and auto parts, a significant reversal as the import taxes threatened to hurt domestic manufacturers.

Automakers and independent analyses say&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/autos-tariffs-trump-tax-imports-ford-gm-e53823ef7bbb7b3c46d11eca90aaa638">the tariffs</a>&nbsp;could raise prices, reduce sales and make U.S. production less competitive worldwide. Trump portrayed the changes as a bridge toward automakers moving more production into the United States.

GM said late Tuesday that the investment will be made over the next two years and is for its gas and electric vehicles. The company will add production of the gas-powered Chevrolet Blazer and Chevrolet Equinox, which are made in Mexico, to two American plants starting in 2027. The Blazer will be produced at GM's Spring Hill, Tennessee plant, while the Equinox will be made at its Kansas City, Kansas facility.

GM will also begin making gas-powered full-size SUVs and light duty pickup trucks at its Orion Township, Michigan&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/technology-business-michigan-detroit-electric-vehicles-0bce16cc56438cc2c7b59e2d0a1b564f">plant</a>, which was previously being reconfigured to make electric vehicles until&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/general-motors-orion-factory-electric-pickup-production-delayed-4a8b0db527252a54dd06a39c695d503a">demand for such cars weakened</a>.

The new investment will give GM the ability to assemble more than 2 million vehicles per year in the U.S.

CEO Mary Barra said in a statement on Tuesday that GM is committed to building vehicles in the U.S. and supporting American jobs.

GM has 50 U.S. manufacturing plants and parts facilities in 19 states, including 11 vehicle assembly plants. The company says that almost 1 million people in the U.S. depend on it for their livelihood, including employees, suppliers, and dealers.

Last month GM&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/general-motors-gm-trump-tariff-barra-721e481b45903a39870fe6d84b3e4bbf">lowered</a>&nbsp;its profit expectations for the year as it braces for a potential impact from&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-tariffs-automakers-factories-relief-25a400c98e02c01c8c54502384e267e1">auto tariffs</a>&nbsp;as high as $5 billion in 2025. The automaker now foresees full-year adjusted earnings before interest and taxes in a range of $10 billion to $12.5 billion. The guidance includes a current tariff exposure of $4 billion to $5 billion. GM previously predicted 2025 adjusted EBIT between $13.7 billion and $15.7 billion.

Shares of General Motors Co. rose almost 1% before the opening bell Wednesday.

The SUV crossed the center line and collided with a westbound 2012 Ford Taurus driven by Harry L&nbsp;Hodge, 18,&nbsp;Canandaigua, New York.&nbsp;&nbsp;After impact, the the Ford rolled and struck the guard rail, and came to rest in the north ditch.

Hodge was pronounced pronounced dead at the scene and was transported to&nbsp;Chaput-Buoy Funeral Home in Concordia. EMS transported Hansen to Wesley Medical Center. Both were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

CLOUD COUNTY —The Kansas Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal crash that occurred just after 5:00 pm on Wednesday in Cloud County.

The Patrol reported a&nbsp; vehicle&nbsp; was eastbound on U.S. 24 just north of 130th Road. The vehicle crossed the center line, colliding with another vehicle head-on. After impact, the westbound vehicle rolled and struck the guard rail, coming to rest in the north ditch.

KHP investigating a fatal head-on crash

JOHNSON COUNTY —A Kansas man is going to prison for the murder of his boyfriend.

On June 3, Judge Erica Schoenig sentenced 32-year-old Joseph Andrew Wacaster to life in prison without the possibility of&nbsp; parole for 25-years for first degree premeditated murder in the death of 27-year-old Cade Blackburn.

In April Wacaster plead guilty to the crime.

In March of 2024, Johnson County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a home in Edgerton where they found a man’s body, later identified as Blackburn, inside the residence.

&nbsp;Prosecutors said Blackburn and Wacaster were in a relationship.

According to an affidavit on the case, police reported finding Blackburn’s body covered with the family board game SORRY along with a Bible. Deputies also recovered a large butcher knife with blood on it.

President Trump’s Department of Homeland Security is advertising a new tip line to report illegal aliens in the midst of the immigration raids across the country.

Meanwhile, the Los Angeles Police Department has made nearly 400 arrests and detentions since Saturday in connection to immigration protests.

The vast majority arrests have been for failing to leave the area in defiance of requests from law enforcement, according to police. There have been a handful of more serious charges including for assault against police officers and for possession of a Molotov cocktail and a gun.

Demonstrators critical of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency returned to lower Manhattan on Wednesday evening, a day after dozens of protesters were detained.

Groups of people chanting and holding anti-ICE signs once again gathered around the area of Foley Square. New York City police did not immediately have information about possible arrests.

Police detained more than 80 people during protests Tuesday evening into early Wednesday.

More than two dozen officers with the Texas Department of Public Safety told a small group of protestors that the Alamo in San Antonio, where a demonstration was planned to take place, was closed.

Dozens of people gathered hundreds of feet outside of the Alamo holding signs in support of immigrants and in opposition to President Trump.

“I think the National Guard made a lot of people afraid,” Pinky Ochoa, 21, said at City Hall, where another protest was scheduled to take place.

“I think a lot of people fear what’s going to happen,” Pedro Ruiz, 53, said about the mostly quiet downtown.

Officers with the Public Safety Department said the Texas National Guard was present at a protest in downtown San Antonio. Members were not seen standing with law enforcement in front of a small crowd of demonstrators.

LA top prosecutor expects to file dozens of criminal cases against peaceful protest disruptors

District Attorney Nathan Hochman highlighted five cases brought in recent days, with charges including assault, grand theft and felony vandalism.

In one case, suspects allegedly shot fireworks at police officers. Two other defendants are accused of driving their motorcycles into a line of officers.

Hochman said investigators were reviewing video from demonstrations that turned violent over the weekend and more charges are pending.

He said people are encouraged to engage in peaceful demonstration, “but the moment they engage in illegal acts, they are no longer legitimate First Amendment protestors. They are criminals.”

Four people were arrested following a man's false report of his girlfriend being kidnapped in Hays.

Hays Deputy Police Chief Tim Greenwood said officers responded to a reported kidnapping in progress about 2:40 a.m. June 5 in the parking lot of the Econo Lodge at 3503 Vine St.

42-year-old Douglas Lee Carson told police his girlfriend was allegedly with another man, 39-year-old Ryan Douglas Howser of Wichita, and was unable to leave, Greenwood said.

After the woman called Carson claiming she had been kidnapped, Carson, along with 47-year-old Joseph Oneil Torres and 32-year-old Cassandra Leigh Kinish of Manhattan, drove to Hays. Carson confronted Howser. Carson allegedly pointed an AR-15 at Howser, Greenwood said.

Greenwood said officers arrived soon after, spotted a gold Chevy Trailblazer, and identified the suspect, Howser, who allegedly fled on foot toward the Econo Lodge.

Greenwood said Howser ran into the hotel to evade officers and tried to escape down a laundry chute before being arrested.

As officers pursued Howser, they spoke with Carson and uncovered multiple alleged crimes, leading to further arrests.

Carson was arrested on requested charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

Torress was arrested on requested charges of possession of opiates, drug paraphernalia and criminal use of weapons.

Kinish was arrested on requested charges of possession of opiates and drug paraphernalia.

Kan. suspect tried to escape police down hotel laundry chute

WASHINGTON (AP) — The United States is drawing down the presence of people who are not deemed essential to operations in the Middle East due to the potential for regional unrest, the State Department and military said Wednesday.

<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/us-department-of-state">The State Department</a>&nbsp;said it has ordered the departure of all nonessential personnel from the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad based on its latest review and a commitment “to keeping Americans safe, both at home and abroad.” The embassy already had been on limited staffing, and the order will not affect a large number of personnel.

The department, however, also is authorizing the departure of nonessential personnel and family members from Bahrain and Kuwait. That gives them an option on whether to leave those countries.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth also “has authorized the voluntary departure of military dependents from locations” across the region, U.S. Central Command said in a statement. The command “is monitoring the developing tension in the Middle East.”

White House spokeswoman Anna Kelly confirmed the moves.

“The State Department regularly reviews American personnel abroad, and this decision was made as a result of a recent review,” Kelly said.

However, those officials said Wednesday that it looked increasingly unlikely that the talks would happen.

President Donald Trump, who has previously&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/iran-israel-trump-nuclear-weapons-program-702e7dfa4c3609f8cefdcb9f67b8117a">threatened to use military force against Iran</a>&nbsp;if negotiations failed, gave a less-than-optimistic view about reaching a deal with Iran, telling the New York Post’s “Pod Force One” podcast that he was "getting more and more less confident about” a deal.

“They seem to be delaying, and I think that’s a shame. I’m less confident now than I would have been a couple of months ago. Something happened to them," he said in the interview, which was recorded on Monday.

Iran’s mission to the U.N. posted on social media that “threats of overwhelming force won’t change the facts.”

“Iran is not seeking a nuclear weapon, and U.S. militarism only fuels instability,” the Iranian mission wrote.

Iranian Defense Minister Gen. Aziz Nasirzadeh separately told journalists Wednesday that he hoped talks with the U.S. would yield results, though Tehran stood ready to respond.

“If conflict is imposed on us, the opponent’s casualties will certainly be more than ours, and in that case, America must leave the region, because all its bases are within our reach,” he said. “We have access to them, and we will target all of them in the host countries without hesitation.”

Meanwhile, the Board of Governors at the International Atomic Energy Agency was potentially set to vote on a measure to censure Iran. That could set in motion an effort to snap back United Nations sanctions on Iran via a measure in Tehran’s 2015 nuclear deal with world powers that’s still active until October. Trump withdrew from that deal in his first term.

Earlier Wednesday, a statement from the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations center, a Mideast-based effort overseen by the British navy, issued a warning to ships in the region that it “has been made aware of increased tensions within the region which could lead to an escalation of military activity having a direct impact on mariners.”

It urged caution in the Persian Gulf, the Gulf of Oman and the Strait of Hormuz. It did not name Iran, though those waterways have seen Iranian ship seizures and attacks in the past.

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — Missouri lawmakers on Wednesday approved hundreds of millions of dollars of financial aid to try to persuade the Kansas City Chiefs and Royals to remain in the state and help the St. Louis area recover from a devastating tornado.

House passage sends the legislative package to Republican Gov. Mike Kehoe, who&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/chiefs-royals-stadiums-missouri-kansas-tornado-9627dbb949df43a7736d0d72cd4ebf56">called lawmakers into special session</a>&nbsp;with a plea for urgent action. Kehoe is expected to sign the measures into law.

Missouri's session paired two otherwise unrelated national trends —&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/sports-stadiums-public-funding-nfl-mlb-a81d825286530bb95f227efc99f2e9d3">a movement for new taxpayer-funded sports stadiums</a>&nbsp;and a reevaluation of states' roles in natural disasters as President Donald Trump's administration&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/fema-hurricane-season-disasters-fema-application-team-rubicon-united-way-1cdd11a3f36fb7cfd37a9ea2655e99f0">reassess federal aid programs</a>.

The stadium subsidies already were a top concern in Missouri when a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/storms-tornadoes-damage-destruction-3f7207e36dc589e9635755a1f579e926">deadly tornado struck St. Louis</a>&nbsp;on May 16, causing an estimated $1.6 billion of damage a day after lawmakers had wrapped up work in their annual regular session.

The disaster relief had widespread support. Lawmakers listened attentively on Wednesday as Democratic state Rep. Kimberly-Ann Collins described with a cracking voice how she witnessed the tornado rip the roof off her house and damage her St. Louis neighborhood. Collins said she has no home insurance, slept in her car for days and has accepted food from others.

“Homes are crumbled and leveled,” said Collins, adding: “It hurts me to my core to see the families that have worked so hard, the businesses that have worked so hard, to see them ripped apart.”

Lawmakers approved $100 million of open-ended aid for St. Louis and $25 million for emergency housing assistance in any areas covered under requests for presidential disaster declarations. They also authorized a $5,000 income tax credit to offset insurance policy deductibles for homeowners and renters hit by this year’s storms — a provision that state budget director Dan Haug said could eventually cost up to $600 million.

The Chiefs and Royals currently play football and baseball in side-by-side stadiums in Jackson County, Missouri, under leases that expire in January 2031. Jackson County voters last year&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/chiefs-royals-kansas-city-stadiums-e9605296b85e91699441e4ba10e83212">defeated a sales tax extension</a>&nbsp;that would have helped finance an $800 million renovation of the Chiefs’ Arrowhead Stadium and a $2 billion ballpark district for the Royals in downtown Kansas City.

That prompted&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/kansas-city-chiefs-royals-new-stadiums-3441b3084c8efab00057f593f4d9b95e">lawmakers in neighboring Kansas</a>&nbsp;last year to authorize bonds for up to 70% of the cost of new stadiums in Kansas to lure the teams to their state. The Royals have bought a mortgage for property in Kansas, though the team also has continued to pursue other possible sites in Missouri.

The Kansas offer is scheduled to expire June 30, creating urgency for Missouri to approve a counteroffer.

Missouri's legislation authorizes bonds covering up to 50% of the cost of new or renovated stadiums, plus up to $50 million of tax credits for each stadium and unspecified aid from local governments. If they choose to stay in Missouri, the Chiefs plan a $1.15 billion renovation of Arrowhead Stadium.

The Chiefs, in a statement to The Associated Press, described the legislative vote as a “significant step forward” that enables the team to continue exploring options to remain in Missouri. The Royals described the legislation as “a very important piece of our decision-making process" but made no site-specific commitment.

“Our focus remains the same: to prioritize the best interests of our team, fans, partners and regional community as we pursue the next generational home for the Kansas City Royals,” the team said in a statement to the AP.

Though they have no specific plans in the works, the St. Louis Cardinals also would be eligible for stadium aid if they undertake a project of at least $500 million.

Many economists contend public funding for stadiums isn’t worth it, because sports tend to divert discretionary spending away from other forms of entertainment rather than generate new income.

But supporters said Missouri stands to lose millions of dollars of tax revenue if Kansas City's most prominent professional sports teams move to Kansas. They said Missouri's reputation also would take a hit, particularly if it loses the Chiefs, which have won three of the past six Super Bowls.

“We have the chance to maybe save what is the symbol of this state,” Rep. Jim Murphy, a Republican from St. Louis County, said while illustrating cross-state support for the measure.

The legislation faced some bipartisan pushback from those who described it as a subsidy for wealthy sports team owners. Others raised concerns that a property tax break for homeowners, which was&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/st-louis-tornado-chiefs-royals-stadiums-7bdf60809d968c82178fd7df17cce181">added in the Senate</a>&nbsp;to gain votes, violates the state constitution by providing different levels of tax relief in various counties while excluding others entirely.

“This bill is unconstitutional, it’s fiscally reckless, it’s morally wrong," said Republican state Rep. Bryant Wolfin.

Chiefs, Royals respond to approved funding bill to keep teams in Missouri

5 other women identified as possible victims

ELLIS COUNTY —On Monday, in an Ellis County courtroom in Hays, 21-year-old Alec Donald Vann of Wakefield was sentenced to 114 months in the Kansas Department of Corrections after pleading guilty to one count of aggravated sexual battery, according to a statement from the Ellis County Attorney's office.

Vann was initially charged with two counts of rape, both being level 1 person felonies, and one count of aggravated sexual battery, a severity level 5-person felony.

The charges alleged Vann knowingly engaged in sexual acts and intercourse with a woman, who did not consent and was overcome by force or fear, in Hays in October 2023.

Vann accepted a plea agreement from the state and pleaded guilty to one count of aggravated sexual battery. After serving his 114-month prison sentence, Vann will be required to register as a sex offender for 25 years and be subject to lifetime post-release supervision.

In addition to the victim in Hays, five additional people were identified as possible victims of Vann. Four victims were willing to speak with the prosecutor, and ultimately, three testified concerning the defendant’s prior acts of sexual misconduct.

The defendant was represented by Andy Vinduska, attorney from Manhattan. The state was represented by former Ellis County Attorney and now Special Prosecutor Appointed, Robert A. Anderson Jr. The Honorable Thomas Drees, 23rd Judicial District Court Judge, served as the sentencing judge.

"This defendant was finally held responsible for his actions, and the Ellis County Attorney's Office will continue to seek justice for victims and hold perpetrators accountable," Anderson said. "We are thankful to the courageous women who came forward in this matter and hope they can now move forward in peace and heal from the trauma caused by the defendant."

 </figure><h2>5 other women identified as possible victims</h2>ELLIS COUNTY —On Monday, in an Ellis County courtroom in Hays, 21-year-old Alec Donald Vann of Wakefield was sentenced to 114 months in the Kansas Department of Corrections after pleading guilty to one count of aggravated sexual battery, according to a statement from the Ellis County Attorney's office.Vann was initially charged with two counts of rape, both being level 1 person felonies, and one count of aggravated sexual battery, a severity level 5-person felony.The charges alleged Vann knowingly engaged in sexual acts and intercourse with a woman, who did not consent and was overcome by force or fear, in Hays in October 2023.Vann accepted a plea agreement from the state and pleaded guilty to one count of aggravated sexual battery. After serving his 114-month prison sentence, Vann will be required to register as a sex offender for 25 years and be subject to lifetime post-release supervision.In addition to the victim in Hays, five additional people were identified as possible victims of Vann. Four victims were willing to speak with the prosecutor, and ultimately, three testified concerning the defendant’s prior acts of sexual misconduct.The defendant was represented by Andy Vinduska, attorney from Manhattan. The state was represented by former Ellis County Attorney and now Special Prosecutor Appointed, Robert A. Anderson Jr. The Honorable Thomas Drees, 23rd Judicial District Court Judge, served as the sentencing judge."This defendant was finally held responsible for his actions, and the Ellis County Attorney's Office will continue to seek justice for victims and hold perpetrators accountable," Anderson said. "We are thankful to the courageous women who came forward in this matter and hope they can now move forward in peace and heal from the trauma caused by the defendant."

Plea deal for sex crimes in northwest Kansas

SHAWNEE COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just after 10:30a.m. Tuesday in Shawnee County.

A man was working on a tractor in the 2900 Block of SE Tecumseh Road, when the tractor fell on him, according to the Shawnee County Sheriff's Deputy Abigail Christian..

OMAHA — As many as 100 workers suspected of being in the country illegally were ensnared, witnesses said, in what immigration officials said was its largest Nebraska enforcement operation since President Donald Trump took office.

Outside of Glenn Valley Foods, community advocates, including a pastor, said they had seen people being removed from the plant. Some were placed in three 15-passenger vans. Others were loaded onto a bus with boarded up windows and a law enforcement escort.

Witnesses who were afraid to give their names told a reporter they saw family members of workers arrive and try to bring documentation to their loved ones. One didn’t stop when asked to by local officers.

That resulted in a tense moment when a handful of people approached a law enforcement vehicle and some loudly expressed frustration with the scope and scale of the operation. At least two people tried to block the movement of the vehicle and were moved, video footage confirmed.

Several observers said Glenn Valley was approached by ICE agents Tuesday morning and allowed agents inside the plant.

Gary Rohwer, owner and CEO of Glenn Valley Foods, told Omaha’s WOWT that federal investigators told him 97 employees had false IDs. He said the company had used e-Verify.

Immigration authorities confirmed to a local member of Congress that 75 to 80 people had been detained. Others were being interviewed about related law enforcement concerns.

“They’re good, hardworking, honest,” he said. “They’re part of our family.”

Community leaders said workers have told them they were separating people in the plant they could prove were citizens and those that they couldn’t.

The operations had several local elected Latino leaders visiting various work sites, some South Omaha businesses shutting their doors for the time being and area residents checking in with each other in a frenzy.

Latino leaders tracking the situation, posting about it on social media and speaking with workers said they had heard of up to a half-dozen worksites where federal immigration agents may have visited.

A federal official described the raid at Glenn Valley Foods as likely the largest in Nebraska since Trump took office after promising a massive crackdown on illegal immigration.

“U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and federal law enforcement partners, executed a federal search warrant at Glenn Valley Foods, today, based on an ongoing criminal investigation into the large-scale employment of aliens without authorization to work in the United States,” said a statement from Tanya Roman, ICE spokesperson.

Roman, in a follow-up call with the Examiner, clarified that Glenn Valley was the only Omaha-area operation federal immigration agents carried out Tuesday and that it attempted no others and made no individual arrests at other businesses.

I have to try and help.”<h2>Law enforcement fights rumors</h2>He was among leaders posting in English and Spanish on social media to keep the community informed. Rumors swirled for much of the day about potentially targeted businesses beyond Glenn Valley Foods, including LALA’s and JBS, processing and production plants in the eastern part of the city. A JBS official told the Nebraska Examiner that no raid or immigration agents targeted JBS. LALA officials said they were not targeted and received no visit either.Later, Garcia, gathering with others on South 24th Street, said he found no redeeming value in the federal action.<figure>

 </figure>“None of this is doing anything to positively help society, but rather is doing the opposite,” he said. “These were individuals that were literally at work, trying to provide for their families, people contributing to our local economy.”He said a team of community representatives is working to get current information, including what’s next for those detained.&nbsp;He said at least one trusted source said the source’s mom was taken to Iowa and offered the option to voluntarily deport or to fight the deportation through legal means.&nbsp;He said various community members have stepped up to offer legal services.&nbsp;Garcia said he’s hearing trepidation that another Nebraska town could be next.&nbsp;State Sens. Dunixi Guereca and Margo Juarez of South Omaha gathered mid-morning with a half dozen other community representatives on South 24th Street. Guereca pointed at the quiet business corridor, the heart of Nebraska’s largest Latino business district, and said: “This is fear.”U.S. Rep. Don Bacon, R-Neb., issued a statement Tuesday saying he understood the “concerns” for people’s loved ones and personal safety and said he had “full confidence and expectations” that ICE would operate legally and treat people respectfully. He said his office supports “the rule of law.”The statement said his office had been told the investigation and warrant being served at the plant concerned “stolen identities.”Local law enforcement agencies said they were not participating in the federal raids, but that they are providing agents and the public with traffic enforcement around targeted locations, as needed.”The Department of Homeland Security recently notified OPD of the operations and OPD officers responded to the areas for traffic control,” Omaha Police Lt. Neal Bonacci said in a statement.<h2>Business impacted</h2>Guereca said he was disappointed in the way federal agents carried out the operation, which he said created unnecessary fear for families, customers and merchants.“Businesses closed their doors. Not only are folks not going to work, they’re not consuming,” he said.&nbsp;Yesenia Peck, who heads the Nebraska Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, also came to the 24th Street district to check on businesses. As she approached one store, a customer was attempting to open the door, but it was locked.She said she knew of at least one foreign consulate office based in Omaha, the Guatemalan Consulate, that was sending a representative to an affected worksite.“Everybody is scared right now. Businesses are closing,” she said. “This is not life…”<figure>

 </figure>Peck said one merchant asked her, “How are we going to pay the bills? Pay rent?”Martha Barrera, who owns a salon on 24th Street, said her workers have continued to accept customers, but she said people are in panic mode about what is happening outside the doors. She said she is happy that community leaders have offered information on rights and how to respond if federal agents were to come to her business or any others.&nbsp;She and others on the business corridor said their stores rely on Latino families and are worried about future commerce.Peck said she understands there are laws and people must abide by those.“But this is not the way it should be done,” she said. “Not cruelly.”“What is happening right now is unbelievable. I’ve seen this kind of thing in other countries,” she said, including her homeland of Peru. “It’s just not the right way.”<h2>Protests gather</h2>Meanwhile in Lincoln, an impromptu protest with roughly 20 people marched near the State Capitol as a result of federal immigration enforcement.Peaceful protests were developing elsewhere in Omaha, too, including an “Omaha Stands with Immigrants rally.”Hundreds protested the federal immigration operation, lining both sides of L Street near 33rd at the dinner hours. Signs and chalked sidewalks offered sentiment: “Undocumented hands feed you.” “F— ICE.” “Keep families together” “Abolish ICE.”An Omaha Tribal group led chants, crossing back and forth at crosslight. “No fear, no hate, no ICE in our state.”A woman in purple plastic boots held a yellow “immigrants welcome here” sign and banged a gong, saying, “It’s the loudest thing I own.”Others passed out “know your rights” information packets.&nbsp;There was no shortage of honks from passer by motorists.&nbsp;Jaqueline Chino walked up to the chanting crowd and stood on a light pole base, with her handmade sign: “Families belong together.”Asked by a reporter what brought her to the event, she said her dad was deported when she was 5 years old.Her mom raised her family alone, as her dad is in Guerrero, Mexico.&nbsp;“I know the pain,” she said. “Growing up without a father figure is very hard for a girl.”Another gathering on South 24th Street drew about 25 people.Said Anna Hernandez, an organizer: “Obviously we can’t do anything at the worksites. But we can show that this is our community and this is breaking up our families.”She said people are reaching out to community members seeking ways to demonstrate support. “There are children who will be forever affected by this.”<h2>Mayor, advocates weigh in</h2>Mayor John Ewing Jr., on his second official day in office, released a statement saying that his office had been alerted that some sort of immigration action would take place on Tuesday, though was not “privy to details.”He noted that he had asked ICE for a heads-up courtesy on enforcement activities, following the ICE-led arrest over the weekend at a west Omaha restaurant that disturbed patrons and others as it circulated widely on social media.“I am trying to get to the bottom of what happened today,” Ewing said in a statement. “We know that actions like these affect families. My administration is working with community groups to understand the scale of need.”Ewing said he knows the ICE actions caused fear. “We do not want people to be so afraid they stop reporting crimes. Our Omaha Police Department will respond to 911 calls and not ask about legal status.”He reiterated that the city was not in the business of immigration enforcement, and said it was the federal government leading that charge.“Our Omaha police officers do not and will not seek individuals to check their legal status,” Ewing said. “OPD was on scene today to assist in traffic control and public safety in areas near their operations.”Saul Lopez, of LULAC National, was headed with other community members to pass out information about worker rights at workplaces and said a concern was for parents who might be separated from children.“We’re very worried right now about what’s going on with the families.”A leader of an Omaha nonprofit that works with youths said Tuesday that the organization has been working to identify families whose working parent may have been detained and separated from their children.So far, the organization’s leader said at least two kids in their care who are from two different families have a parent caught up in the operations. The organization was busy getting a hold of emergency contacts for the kids.Also Tuesday, immigration advocates and community leaders had turned a South Omaha organization into a sort of information headquarters to better understand and coordinate legal, outreach and response activities.Also among the elected officials gathered at the South Omaha hub was Yanira Garcia of the Omaha Regional Metropolitan Transit Board and Omaha City Councilman Ron Hug.Examiner reporter Juan Salinas II contributed to this report.
