The Federal Bureau of Investigation's San Francisco Field Office is seeking the public's assistance in identifying the individual responsible for assaulting federal officers and&nbsp;the theft of government property on June 10, 2025, in Concord, California.&nbsp;

SEDGWICK COUNTY—A Sedgwick County Sheriff’s deputy was struck by a vehicle Thursday night while on scene investigating an earlier crash

Just after 9:30 p.m., deputies responded to a report of a non-injury crash at the intersection of Kansas 42 and Maize Road, according to Sheriff's Department Spokesman Branden Stitt.

While outside his patrol vehicle and investigating the initial crash, a westbound pickup struck the deputy.

Sedgwick County EMS initially reported the deputy’s injuries as critical but later upgraded his condition to serious upon transport to a Wichita hospital.&nbsp; The 39-year-old deputy who has been with the Sheriff’s Office since July 2023, continues to recover. He remains hospitalized but is alert and has been speaking with colleagues and family, according to Stitt.

The driver of the pickup remained at the scene and is cooperating with authorities. Impairment is not believed to be a factor in the incident.

The Kansas Highway Patrol’s Critical Highway Accident Response Team (CHART) has taken over the investigation. The case remains under active investigation by KHP. The name of the deputy has not been released.

NEW YORK (AP) — Oil prices leaped, and stocks slumped Friday on worries that escalating violence following&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/live/israel-iran-attack">Israel’s attack on Iranian nuclear and military targets</a>&nbsp;could damage the flow of crude around the world, along with the global economy.

The S&amp;P 500 sank 1.1% and wiped out what had been a modest gain for the week. The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 769 points, or 1.8%, and the Nasdaq composite lost 1.3%.

The strongest action was in the oil market, where the price of a barrel of benchmark U.S. crude jumped 7.3% to $72.98. Brent crude, the international standard, rose 7% to $74.23 for a barrel.

Iran is one of the world’s major producers of oil, though sanctions by Western countries have limited its sales. If a wider war erupts, it could slow the flow of Iran’s oil to its customers and keep the price of crude and gasoline higher for everyone worldwide.

Beyond the oil coming from Iran, analysts also pointed to the potential for disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, a relatively narrow waterway off Iran’s coast. Much of the world’s oil that's been pulled from the ground moves through it on ships.

Past attacks involving Iran and Israel have seen prices for oil spike initially, only to fall later “once it became clear that the situation was not escalating and there was no impact on oil supply,” according to Richard Joswick, head of near-term oil at S&amp;P Global Commodity Insights.

That has Wall Street waiting to see what will come next. U.S. stock prices dropped to their lowest points for the day after Iran launched ballistic missiles toward Israel.

For now, the price of oil has jumped, but it’s still lower than it was earlier this year. “This is an economic shock that nobody really needs, but it is one that seems more like a shock to sentiment than to the fundamentals of the economy,” said Brian Jacobsen, chief economist at Annex Wealth Management.

That in turn sent U.S. stocks to a loss that was notable in size but outside their top 15 for the year so far.

Companies that use a lot of fuel as part of their business and need their customers feeling confident enough to travel fell to some of the sharpest losses. Cruise operator Carnival dropped 4.9%. United Airlines sank 4.4%, and Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings fell 5%.

They helped overshadow gains for U.S. oil producers and other companies that could benefit from increased fighting between Israel and Iran.

Exxon Mobil rose 2.2%, and ConocoPhillips gained 2.4% because the leaping price of crude portends bigger profits for them.

Oil prices leap and US stocks slump on worries about the crude market

LOS ANGELES (AP) — After a week of protests over federal immigration raids, about 200 Marines have moved into Los Angeles and will protect federal property and personnel, a military commander said Friday.

Maj. Gen. Scott Sherman, commander of Task Force 51 who is overseeing the 4,700 troops deployed, said that the Marines have finished training on civil disturbance and the first batch moved to a federal building west of downtown Los Angeles where they will start their operations at noon local time.

The development comes a day after the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals temporarily blocked a federal judge’s order that had directed President Donald Trump to return control of National Guard troops to California, shortly after a federal judge had ruled the Guard deployment was illegal and both violated the Tenth Amendment and exceeded Trump’s statutory authority.

Some 2,000 National Guard troops have been in the city since last week when&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/insurrection-act-trump-troops-newsom-military-national-guard-a842f79e1c0e244039be274a6f266a7a">immigration raids set off protests.</a>&nbsp;Some have provided protection to immigration agents making arrests. Another 2,000 Guard members were notified of deployment earlier this week.

The 200 Marines will be replacing soldiers protecting the federal building, which will allow more of National Guard members to be assigned to protecting federal agents on their operations, Sherman said.

None of the military troops will be detaining anyone, he added.

“I would like to emphasize that the soldiers will not participate in law enforcement activities. Rather, they’ll be focused on protecting federal law enforcement personnel,” Sherman said.

Roughly 500 National Guard members have been used to provide security on immigration raids after undergoing expanded instruction, legal training and rehearsals with the agents doing the enforcement before they go on those missions.

It's unclear if the Marines will eventually provide security on raids. A total of 700 Marines have been trained to work in LA.

The movement of Marines into LA comes as a curfew has been in place in downtown and protests have ended after a few hours with arrests this week largely for failure to disperse. On the third night of the 8 p.m. curfew, officers with the Department of Homeland Security deployed flash bangs to disperse a crowd that had gathered near the jail, sending protesters sprinting away.

As with the past two nights, the hourslong demonstrations remained peaceful and upbeat, drawing a few hundred attendees who marched through downtown chanting, dancing and poking fun at the Trump administration’s characterization of the city as a “war zone.”

The protests began Friday after federal immigration raids arrested dozens of workers in Los Angeles. Protesters blocked a major freeway and set cars on fire over the weekend, and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/video/australian-reporter-hit-by-nonlethal-round-while-covering-intensifying-protests-in-los-angeles-9695217ad2fa48c9a1adc4fbb0091c59">police responded</a>&nbsp;with tear gas, rubber bullets and flash-bang grenades.

Elsewhere, demonstrations have picked up across the U.S.,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/immigration-protests-arrests-austin-aa726c826047f8d7eb4091acc8929b8e">emerging in more</a>&nbsp;than a dozen major cities. Some have led to clashes with police and hundreds have been arrested.

The movement of Marines into LA also comes ahead of demonstrations&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/no-kings-protest-things-to-know-trump-8d37f2bb2bf20ab503205b277e92b885">expected over the weekend</a>&nbsp;in cities across the United States, and the possibility that Trump could send troops to other states for immigration enforcement as&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/newsom-abbott-governors-national-guard-trump-1848ac586dad24ac83a4d72845775688">governors weigh what to do</a>.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom has called the troop deployment a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/donald-trump-gavin-newsom-immigration-protests-a8269425e604f6f03affdc627a2a5721">“serious breach of state sovereignty”</a>&nbsp;and a power grab by Trump, and he has gone to court to stop it. The president has cited&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/immigration-raids-los-angeles-2d1d5e2f638da600c4b34fe8bf8cf3aa">a legal provision</a>&nbsp;that allows him to mobilize federal service members when there is “a rebellion or danger of a rebellion against the authority of the Government of the United States.”

Under the Posse Comitatus Act, active-duty forces are prohibited by law from conducting law enforcement.

Sherman said the U.S. Marine Corps is responsible for guarding U.S. embassies overseas so they are well-trained on how to defend a federal building.

States face questions on deploying troops

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, a Republican, has put&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/immigration-protests-texas-national-guard-4f8ffc07788515c0d0e7ae40c7980565">5,000 National Guard members</a>&nbsp;on standby in cities where demonstrations are planned. In other Republican-controlled states, governors have not said when or how they may deploy troops.

A group of Democratic governors earlier signed a statement this week calling Trump’s deployments “an alarming abuse of power.”

In Los Angeles, troops work in shifts and the public is likely to only see a few hundred out, Sherman said.

The Trump administration has argued the troops are necessary to protect federal officers and quell unrest.

So far, the protests have been centered mostly in downtown near City Hall and a federal detention center where some immigrants are being held. Much of the sprawling city has been spared from the protests.

There have been about 470 arrests since Saturday, the vast majority of which were for failing to leave the area at the request of law enforcement, according to the police department.

There have been a handful of more serious charges, including for assault against officers and for possession of a Molotov cocktail and a gun. Nine officers have been hurt, mostly with minor injuries.

Military commander: Marines now in LA to protect federal property, personnel

SEDGWICK COUNTY— A woman who called 911 to report shooting her son in October of 2024 is due back in court Friday afternoon.

&nbsp;Tesha Florence, 46, is charged with second degree murder and is scheduled for a preliminary hearing in the case, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office.

In October 9, Sedgwick County Emergency Communications received a 911 call from Florence reporting that she shot her son, according to Wichita Police Captain Aaron Moses.

First responders located a 16-year-old identified as Robert Florence inside an apartment in the 9100 Block of East Harry. He had a single gunshot wound. EMS transported him to an area hospital where he was in extremely critical condition. He died two days later, according to Moses.

At the scene, officers detained&nbsp;<a href="https://ssc.sedgwickcounty.org/InmateSearch/Details.aspx?Id=168822">&nbsp;Florence,</a>&nbsp;the boy's mother.&nbsp;&nbsp;

During the investigation into this case, detectives learned of a previously unreported incident from March 2024 where Florence threatened an ex-husband and his current girlfriend with a gun.

Florence remains in the Sedgwick County Jail on a $1.2 million bond, according to the district attorney's office.

NEW YORK (AP) — More than 1.15 million power banks are under recall across the U.S. after some fires and explosions were reported by consumers.

According to a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cpsc.gov/Recalls/2025/More-than-One-Million-Anker-Power-Banks-Recalled-Due-to-Fire-and-Burn-Hazards-Manufactured-by-Anker-Innovations">Thursday notice</a>&nbsp;from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, electronics maker Anker Innovations is recalling certain “PowerCore 10000” power banks because the lithium-ion battery inside can overheat.

An overheating battery can lead to “melting of plastic components, smoke, and fire hazards,” Anker wrote in an accompanying&nbsp;<a href="https://www.anker.com/a1263-recall">announcement</a>. The company added that it was conducting this recall "out of an abundance of caution to ensure the safety of our customers."

According to the CPSC, China-based Anker has received 19 reports of fires and explosions involving these now-recalled portable chargers. That includes two minor burn injuries and 11 reports of property damage amounting to over $60,700.

The recalled “PowerCore 10000” power banks have a model number of A1263. They were sold online at Anker's website — as well as Amazon, eBay and Newegg — between June 2016 and December 2022 for about $27 across the U.S., per the recall notice.

Consumers in possession these now-recalled chargers are urged to stop using them immediately — and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.anker.com/a1263-recall">contact Anker</a>&nbsp;for a free replacement.

Impacted consumers can&nbsp;<a href="https://www.anker.com/a1263-recall">visit Anker's website</a>&nbsp;for more information and register for the recall. To receive a replacement, consumers will need to submit a photo of their recalled power bank that shows its model number, serial number, their name, date and the word “recalled” written on the product.

Recall: More than 1 million power banks after reported fires

WASHINGTON (AP) — Eight years after President&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-immigration-military-los-angeles-a2611009fd40d593f07c58255911513d">Donald Trump</a>&nbsp;was dazzled by a grand military parade down the Champs-Élysées in Paris, he is finally getting a chance to try to top the spectacle.

His long-delayed dream is expected to be realized Saturday with an extravaganza of American military might featuring tanks and other armored vehicles rolling through the nation’s capital, thousands of soldiers marching the streets and military aircraft flying overhead. In a final flourish, an elite parachute team is to jump from above the White House, land near Trump and hand him an American flag.

“I think it’s going to be great,” Trump said this week. “We’re going to celebrate our country for a change.”

For Trump, a media-attuned real estate developer who was a reality television star and beauty pageant owner, it’s a chance to flex his skills as a showman. But the muscular display of military might also comes as Trump is increasingly flexing the powers of his office, including with the deployment of thousands of National Guard troops to respond to&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/los-angeles-protests-ice-national-guard-1009eac191a8f6248463a5028cbe0f68">protests in Los Angeles</a>&nbsp;over his immigration crackdown.

Trump has dismissed concerns about the cost, about what message the display of military power sends and about the fact that it will take place on his 79th birthday.

One potential obstacle the president can’t control is the weather. There’s a chance the parade could be interrupted by thunderstorms. The White House has said it will go on rain or shine, but it could be delayed by lightning.

Trump said Thursday night that he hopes the weather is OK but if it’s not, “That’s OK too.”

“Doesn’t matter,” he said at the White House. “Doesn’t affect the tanks at all. Doesn’t affect the soldiers. They’re used to it.”

Parade plans emerge after joining Army bash, donors defraying costs

The parade was initially conceived as a July 4 event, but Trump found occasion this year to add it onto a long-planned celebration of the 250th anniversary of the U.S. Army that coincides with Flag Day and Trump’s birthday.

“This parade will honor all of the military men and women who have bravely served our country, including those who made the ultimate sacrifice to defend our freedom,” White House spokesperson Anna Kelly said in a statement. “No event can fully capture our gratitude for those who have worn the uniform, but this grand parade will ensure our veterans and active-duty service members are recognized with the respect and magnificence they deserve.”

The White House has not offered details about when and how the administration first began pushing this year to turn Trump’s parade vision into reality, but the president has been briefed regularly on its progress and made suggestions about details of the plans, according to press secretary&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-leavitt-white-house-first-press-briefing-5ba5ff116e18c29b04c934a24a8983d1">Karoline Leavitt</a>.

Private donations from companies like Lockheed Martin, Amazon and UFC are helping defray some of the costs, but the government still is expected to spend $25 million to $45 million.

<a href="https://apnews.com/article/army-parade-spending-border-housing-11ba6199bc7fe12a5cc02ab178f1ca7f">Some members of Congress have questioned</a>&nbsp;the high cost at a time when the administration has been pushing for deep spending cuts throughout the government.

Defense officials and the White House have justified the cost as a worthy expense to pay tribute to service members and inspire patriotism, and Trump has called it “a great expenditure.”

‘We’re going to have to try and top it’

Outside of wartime, there isn’t much of a tradition of military parades in the U.S., with some critics likening the planned pageantry to the jingoistic displays seen in North Korea.

But Trump’s inspiration was the 2017 Bastille Day procession he attended in France, which he declared at the time to be “magnificent” and “one of the greatest parades I have ever seen.”

“We’re going to have to try and top it,” he said then.

With the parade now set to occur on his 79th birthday, Trump said he is “taking a little heat” over the overlapping occasions. But he said the festivities are meant to celebrate the Army and Flag Day, not his birthday.

His imprint Saturday will be clear, though.

Trump requested aircraft and military equipment that capture the might of the military, according to the White House. He is expected to view the synchronized flyovers, along with the processions of tanks, historical reenactments and marching soldiers, from a special reviewing stand.

Toward the end of the day’s events, he is set to deliver remarks during a nationally televised ceremony capped by fireworks.

One of Trump’s favorite musical acts, “&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/lee-greenwood-president-donald-trump-interview-god-bless-usa-86144215124bd4a826a3bbcf720726d6">God Bless the USA” singer Lee Greenwood,</a>&nbsp;is on tap to perform. Greenwood’s song is one of the president’s preferred walk-on tunes at events. The singer has performed in person at campaign rallies, and Trump even partnered with Greenwood on&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-god-bless-usa-bible-greenwood-2713fda3efdfa297d0f024efb1ca3003">a business deal to sell “God Bless the USA” Bibles</a>&nbsp;for $59.99.

Protests expected to counter the military show

Though the president has blown past the logistical and financial barriers that stopped his parade in the past, the pageantry still is expected to draw pushback.

With predictions of as many as 200,000 attendees, the Secret Service is preparing for protests by erecting 18 miles of anti-scale fencing and deploying drones to the city’s skies to keep watch.

Multiple protests to counter the event were being planned, including a march to the White House. Immigration-related clashes between protesters and law enforcement in Los Angeles have spread to other cities this week and heightened the possibility of tensions in the Washington area.

The president this week said that if protesters show up at the parade, “they will be met with very big force.”

It was not clear what he meant by that remark, but it added to the alarm of critics who claim the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-democracy-autocrats-authoritarian-constitution-threat-542ac437a58880e81c052f8f2df1643f">policies of Trump’s administration</a>&nbsp;and the planned lavish display of militarism smack of authoritarian politics.

Organizers of&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/no-kings-protest-things-to-know-trump-8d37f2bb2bf20ab503205b277e92b885">“No Kings” protests</a>&nbsp;are planning demonstrations around the country Saturday to counter an event they contend is meant to feed Trump’s ego.

“The flag doesn’t belong to President Trump. It belongs to us,” the “No Kings” website says.

But they’re not planning to hold an event in Washington.

Instead, their flagship event will be in Philadelphia, and organizers said they hope to draw attention away from what they paint as a strongman spectacle designed for Trump’s birthday, like a king.

“I don’t feel like a king,” he said. “I have to go through hell to get stuff approved.”

In May, a jury found Ye'Kira Acoya Hollins, 18, guilty of aggravated battery and she will learn her sentence in the courtroom of&nbsp; Judge Tyler Rousch, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office.

In May of 2024, police responded to a disturbance in the 400 block of N Dodge in Wichita, according to Wichita Police Captain Aaron Moses. The victim in this case, an 18-year-old girl later arrived at an area hospital with second degree burns to the face and neck believed to be caused by a suspect throwing an acidic liquid on her during a fight.&nbsp;

Immediately following the incident, investigators with the Wichita Police Felony Assault unit along with patrol officers began looking for the suspects. On June 5, officers with the Patrol North Community Response Team located and arrested Hollins and accomplice&nbsp;Tayronnia Jontashia West. In March of 2025, police also arrested a 17-year-old girl in connection with the case.

Sentencing day for acid attack on Kansas girl

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Israel attacked Iran's capital early Friday in strikes that&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/iran-nuclear-iaea-sanctions-728b811da537abe942682e13a82ff8bd">targeted the country's nuclear program</a>&nbsp;and killed at least two top military officers, raising the potential for an all-out war between the two bitter Middle East adversaries. It appeared to be the most significant attack Iran has faced since its 1980s war with Iraq.

On social media, President Trump and two members of the Kansas Congressional delegation among many others made statements.

Simmering tensions over Iran’s rapidly advancing nuclear program boiled over and Iran quickly retaliated, sending a swarm of drones at Israel as&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/ali-khamenei">Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei</a>&nbsp;warned of “severe punishment.”

Countries in the region condemned Israel's attack, while leaders around the globe called for immediate deescalation from both sides.

Israel's military said about 200 aircraft were involved in the initial attack on about 100 targets. Two security officials said the country's Mossad spy agency was also able to position explosive drones inside Iran ahead of time and then activate them to target missile launchers at an Iranian base near Tehran.

They said Israel had also smuggled precision weapons into central Iran as well as strike systems on vehicles, which were activated as the attack began to hit Iranian air defenses.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the highly secretive missions and it was not possible to independently confirm their claims. There was no official comment.

The Israeli attack hit several sites, including Iran's&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/iran-nuclear-sites-explained-us-negotiations-cb602a7b53f9314dfba7e35a889fc086">main nuclear enrichment facility</a>&nbsp;at Natanz, where black smoke could be seen rising into the air. Later in the morning, Israel said it had also destroyed dozens of radar installations and surface-to-air missile launchers in western Iran.

<a href="https://apnews.com/article/iran-israel-funeral-revolutionary-guard-e07df55596d48413fb87bf43711c9441">The leader of Iran's paramilitary Revolutionary Guard</a>, Gen. Hossein Salami, was confirmed dead, Iranian state television reported, a significant blow to Tehran's governing theocracy and an immediate escalation of its long-simmering conflict with Israel.

The chief of staff of Iranian armed forces, Gen. Mohammad Bagheri, was also confirmed dead by Iranian state television. Khamenei said other top military officials and scientists were also killed.

In response, Iran fired more than 100 drones at Israel, with both Iraq and Jordan confirming they had flown over their airspace. Israel said the drones were being intercepted outside its airspace, and it was not immediately clear whether any got through.

The Trump administration, which had cautioned Israel against an attack during continued negotiations over Iran's nuclear enrichment program, said it had not been involved and warned against any retaliation targeting U.S. interests or personnel.

Still, it seemed likely the U.S. suspected an attack could be in the offing, with Washington on Wednesday&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/state-department-embassy-baghdad-f892ebd6a50850ef5650f31819541bff">pulling some American diplomats</a>&nbsp;from Iraq’s capital and offering voluntary evacuations for the families of U.S. troops in the wider Middle East.

Israel calls attacks preemptive strikes on Iran’s nuclear program

Israeli leaders cast attack as necessary to head off an imminent threat that Iran would build nuclear bombs, though it remains unclear how close the country is to achieving that or whether Iran had actually been planning a strike. Iran maintains its nuclear program is for civilian purposes only.

“It could be a year. It could be within a few months,"&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/benjamin-netanyahu">Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu</a>&nbsp;claimed as he vowed to pursue the attack for as long as necessary to “remove this threat.”

"This is a clear and present danger to Israel’s very survival,” he said.

Over the past year, Israel has been targeting Iran’s air defenses,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/iran-israel-s300-radar-hit-isfahan-attack-ce6719d3df8ebf5af08b035427ee215c">hitting a radar system</a>&nbsp;for a Russian-made air defense battery in April 2024 and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/israel-palestinians-hamas-war-lebanon-hezbollah-iran-news-10-26-2024-9c9f366c71c508e6dd0ee74cff8400d2">surface-to-air missile sites</a>&nbsp;and missile manufacturing facilities in October.

Nervous Israelis rushed to supermarkets in Tel Aviv, Jerusalem and elsewhere to buy bottled water and other supplies, and circulated messages on WhatsApp groups advising each other to prepare their shelters for potential long-term use.

Iran claims Israel targeted residential areas

Israel “opened its wicked and blood-stained hand to a crime in our beloved country, revealing its malicious nature more than ever by striking residential centers,” Khamenei said in a statement.

For Netanyahu, the operation distracts attention from Israel’s&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/today-in-history/october-7">ongoing and increasingly devastating war in Gaza</a>, which is now over 20 months old.

There is a broad consensus in the Israeli public that Iran is a major threat, and Israel’s opposition leader, Yair Lapid, a staunch critic of Netanyahu, offered his “full support” for the mission against Iran. But if Iranian reprisals cause heavy Israeli casualties or major disruptions to daily life, public opinion could shift quickly.

Netanyahu expressed hope the attacks would trigger the downfall of Iran’s theocracy, saying his message to the Iranian people was that the fight was not with them, but with the “brutal dictatorship that has oppressed you for 46 years.”

“I believe that the day of your liberation is near,” the Israeli leader said.

Multiple sites in the Iranian capital were hit in the attack, which Netanyahu said targeted both nuclear and military sites. Also targeted were officials leading Iran’s nuclear program and its ballistic missile arsenal. The International Atomic Energy Agency confirmed that an Israeli strike hit Iran’s uranium enrichment facility at Natanz and said it was closely monitoring radiation levels.

The strike on Iran pushed the Israeli military to its limits, requiring the use of aging air-to-air refuelers to get its fighter jets close enough to attack. It wasn’t immediately clear if Israeli jets entered Iranian airspace or just fired so-called “standoff missiles” over another country. People in Iraq heard fighter jets overhead at the time of the attack. Israel previously attacked Iran from over the border in Iraq.

Tension had been growing for weeks ahead of attacks

The potential for an attack had been apparent for weeks as angst built over Iran's nuclear program.

Once the attacks were underway, the U.S. Embassy in Jerusalem&nbsp;<a href="https://il.usembassy.gov/security-alert-u-s-embassy-jerusalem-june-13-2025/">issued an alert</a>&nbsp;telling American government workers and their families to shelter in place until further notice.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Israel took “unilateral action against Iran” and that Israel advised the U.S. that it believed the strikes were necessary for its self-defense.

“We are not involved in strikes against Iran, and our top priority is protecting American forces in the region,” Rubio said in a statement released by the White House.

Trump is scheduled to attend a meeting of his National Security Council on Friday in the White House Situation Room, where he is expected to discuss the conflict with top advisers.

Israel has long been determined to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons, a concern laid bare on Thursday when the Board of Governors at the International Atomic Energy Agency for the first time in 20 years&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/iran-nuclear-iaea-sanctions-728b811da537abe942682e13a82ff8bd">censured Iran</a>&nbsp;over its refusal to work with its inspectors. Iran immediately announced it would establish a third enrichment site and install more advanced centrifuges.

Even so, there are multiple assessments on how many nuclear weapons Iran could conceivably build, should it choose to do so. Iran would need months to assemble, test and field any weapon, which it so far has said it has no desire to do. U.S. intelligence agencies also assess Iran does not have a weapons program at this time.

In a sign of the far-reaching implications of the emerging conflict, Israel's main airport was closed and benchmark Brent crude spiked on news of the attack, rising nearly 8%.

SHAWNEE COUNTY —Law enforcement investigating fatal shooting in Topeka have made an arrest.

Just before 8p.m. June 3, police&nbsp;responded to reports of gunshots in the 700 block of SW Western in Topeka, according to Police Lt. Donna Eubanks.

First responders located a victim, later identified 29-year-old Ian A. Mwaniki of Topeka with life-threatening injuries. Medical personnel on scene later pronounced him deceased.&nbsp;&nbsp;

As a result of the investigation police on Thursday arrested 19-year-old Pearson Carter III of Topeka, on requested charges of Murder in the 2nd degree, intentional, Aggravated battery, Criminal carry of a weapon and Unlawful discharge of a firearm in city limits

Suspect arrested 9 days after Kansas man's murder

CLOUD COUNTY —One person died in an accident just after 5p.m. Wednesday in Cloud County. The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2013&nbsp;GMC Acadia driven by Kathy A. Hansen, 72, Smith Center, was eastbound on U.S. 24 just north of 130th Road.

The SUV crossed the center line and collided with a westbound 2012 Ford Taurus driven by Harry L&nbsp;Hodge, 18,&nbsp;Canandaigua, New York.&nbsp;&nbsp;After impact, the the Ford rolled and struck the guard rail, and came to rest in the north ditch.

Hodge was pronounced pronounced dead at the scene and was transported to&nbsp;Chaput-Buoy Funeral Home in Concordia. EMS transported Hansen to Wesley Medical Center. Both were properly restrained, according to the KHP.
