SEDGWICK COUNTY —A Kansas woman involved in an altercation with a Kansas sheriff's deputy during a traffic stop is going to prison.

On Tuesday, Judge Christopher Magana sentenced 22-year-old Nevaeh Thompson of Wichita, to 45 months in prison, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office. She will also serve 36 months of post-release supervision. In May, Thompson pleaded guilty to aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer.

The deputy sustained minor injuries during the incident. Thompson’s vehicle was later found abandoned in the 7300 block of E. Indianapolis. Surveillance footage from a nearby residence shows Thompson running from the vehicle.&nbsp; Thompson was arrested five days after the incident.

Sentencing Day: Woman dragged Kan. deputy during traffic stop

FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) — U.S. President&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-tariffs-presidential-power-instinct-decision-making-3d1215e5675ef534bbebe8dfe8f136a5">Donald Trump</a>&nbsp;and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen have&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-scotland-tariffs-europe-8d2fb467d64f7fdfc4797dbebd54e8fc">announced a sweeping trade deal</a>&nbsp;that imposes 15% tariffs on most European goods, warding off Trump's threat of a 30% rate if no deal had been reached by Aug. 1.

The tariffs, or import taxes, paid when Americans buy European products could raise prices for U.S. consumers and dent profits for European companies and their partners who bring goods into the country.

Here are some things to know about the deal:

Trump and von der Leyen's announcement, made during Trump's visit to one of his golf courses in Scotland, leaves many crucial details to be filled in.

The headline figure is a 15% tariff rate on about 70% of European goods brought into the U.S., including cars, computer chips and pharmaceuticals. It's lower than the 20% that Trump initially proposed, and lower than his threats of 50% and then 30%.

The remaining 30% is still open to further decisions and negotiations.

Von der Leyen said that the two sides agreed on zero tariffs on both sides for a range of “strategic” goods: Aircraft and aircraft parts, certain chemicals, semiconductor equipment, certain agricultural products and some natural resources and critical raw materials. Specifics were lacking.

She said that the two sides “would keep working” to add more products to the list.

Additionally, companies in the European Union would purchase what Trump said was $750 billion (638 billion euros) worth of natural gas, oil and nuclear fuel over three years to replace Russian energy supplies that Europe is seeking to exit in any case.

Meanwhile, European companies would invest an additional $600 billion (511 billion euros) in the U.S. under a political commitment that isn't legally binding, officials said.

Brussels and Washington will shortly issue a joint statement that frames the deal but isn't yet legally binding, according to senior officials who weren't authorized to be publicly named according to European Commission policy.

The joint statement will have "some very precise commitments and others which will need to be spelled out in different ways,” a senior European Commission official said.

EU officials said that the zero tariff list could include nuts, pet food, dairy products and seafood.

Trump said that the 50% U.S. tariff on imported steel would remain. Von der Leyen said that the two sides agreed to further negotiations to fight a global steel glut, reduce tariffs and establish import quotas — that is, set amounts that can be imported, often at a lower rate or tariff-free.

Trump said that pharmaceuticals, a major import from the EU to the US, weren't included in the deal. Von der Leyen said that the pharmaceuticals issue was “on a separate sheet of paper” from Sunday's deal.

And von der Leyen said that when it came to farm products, the EU side made clear that “there were tariffs that could not be lowered,” without specifying which products.

The 15% rate removes Trump's threat of a 30% tariff. But it effectively raises the tariff on EU goods from 1.2% last year to 17% and would reduce the 27-nation bloc's gross domestic product by 0.5%, said Jack Allen-Reynolds, deputy chief eurozone economist at Capital Economics.

Higher tariffs, or import taxes, on European goods mean sellers in the U.S. would have to either increase prices for consumers — risking loss of market share — or swallow the added cost in terms of lower profits. The higher tariffs are expected to hurt export earnings for European firms and slow the economy.

Von der Leyen said that the 15% rate was “the best we could do” and credited the deal with maintaining access to the U.S. market, and providing “stability and predictability for companies on both sides.”

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz welcomed the deal which avoided “an unnecessary escalation in trans-Atlantic trade relations" and said that “we were able to preserve our core interests,” while adding that “I would have very much wished for further relief in trans-Atlantic trade.”

Senior French officials on Monday criticized the accord. Strategy Commissioner Clément Beaune said that the deal failed to reflect the bloc’s economic strength.

“This is an unequal and unbalanced agreement," he said. "Europe didn't wield its strength. We are the world’s leading trading power.”

While the rate is lower than threatened, "the big caveat to today’s deal is that there is nothing on paper, yet," said Carsten Brzeski, global chief of macro at ING bank.

“With this disclaimer in mind and at face value, the agreement would clearly bring an end to the uncertainty of recent months. An escalation of the U.S.-EU trade tensions would have been a severe risk for the global economy," Brzeski said.

“This risk seems to have been avoided.”

Asked if European carmakers could still profitably sell cars at 15%, von der Leyen said the rate was much lower than the current 27.5%. That has been the rate under Trump's 25% tariff on cars from all countries, plus the preexisting U.S. car tariff of 2.5%.

The impact is likely to be substantial on some companies, given that automaker Volkswagen said that it suffered a 1.3 billion-euro ($1.5 billion) hit to profits in the first half of the year from the higher tariffs.

Mercedes-Benz dealers in the U.S. have said they were holding the line on 2025 model year prices “until further notice.” The German automaker has a partial tariff shield, because it makes 35% of the Mercedes-Benz vehicles sold in the U.S. in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, but the company said that it expects prices to undergo “significant increases” in coming years.

The EU also agreed to lower its tariff on cars imported from the U.S. to 2.5% from 10%.

Before Trump returned to office, the U.S. and the EU maintained generally low tariff levels in what is the largest bilateral trading relationship in the world, with around 1.7 trillion euros ($2 trillion) in annual trade.

Together the U.S. and the EU have 44% of the global economy. The U.S. rate averaged 1.47% for European goods, while the EU has averaged 1.35% for American products, according to the Bruegel think tank in Brussels.

Trump has complained about the EU’s 198 billion-euro ($232.5 billion) trade surplus in goods, which shows Americans buy more from European businesses than the other way around, and has said that the European market isn't open enough for U.S.-made cars.

However, American companies fill some of the trade gap by outselling the EU when it comes to services such as cloud computing, travel bookings and legal and financial services. And about 30% of European imports are from American-owned companies, according to the European Central Bank.

New details on blockbuster US-EU trade deal

WYANDOTTE COUNTY—In honor of the sacrifice given by Deputy Elijah Ming, the Wyandotte County Sheriff's Office and the Unified Government will hold a candlelight vigil on Wednesday, July 30, at 8:30 p.m. in front of the Wyandotte County Courthouse (710 N 7th Street).

Parking will be available in lots 1, 2, 3, and E. Lots 1 and 2 are on the West side of Memorial Hall, and lots 3 and E are East of City Hall on both the North and South sides of the street. 

The Kansas City Kansas Fire Department will be assisting with transporting individuals who may be unable to walk long distances. We know the support from our community is strong and we hope to see you there to honor and remember Deputy Ming.

Just before 3:30 p.m. Saturday, a woman called requesting that police accompany her as she moved out of a residence, due to concerns about her safety. She reported that when friends tried to assist her, a man threatened them with a firearm. At around 3:45 p.m., a deputy from the Wyandotte County Sheriff’s Office and an officer from the Kansas City, Kansas Police Department (KCKPD) arrived at the residence at 2627 S. 30th&nbsp;St.

Preliminary information indicates as they approached the front door, a male subject inside the house fired multiple rounds at the officers. Rounds struck 34-year-old Deputy Elijah Ming. The KCKPD officer was uninjured. Multiple law enforcement officers then responded to the scene.

As responding officers attempted to provide aid to Deputy Ming, gunfire was exchanged between the man, later identified as Shawn Harris, 38, of Kansas City, Kansas, and officers from the KCKPD and the Wyandotte County Sheriff’s Office. Harris was shot during the exchange of gunfire while he barricaded in the home.

Deputy Ming was transported to the hospital. Despite lifesaving measures, he died of his injuries.

After a standoff, police arrested Harris. He faces a capital murder charge.

On social media, the Kansas City, Missouri police department reported they put a stop to last weekends gathering, arresting participants and spectators. Police arrested 17, gave 29 citations and towed 15 vehicles invluding ATV during last weekends Entertainment District enforcement.

KCPD makes more arrests for weekend sideshows

EDINBURGH, Scotland (AP) — U.S. President Donald Trump said Monday he is giving Russian President Vladimir Putin 10 to 12 days to stop the killing in Ukraine,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/russia-ukraine-war-trump-patriot-missiles-kellogg-ca8cda9b417737188c471390bc312a5d">shortening a 50-day deadline</a>&nbsp;he had given the Russian leader two weeks ago.

Russia fired an overnight barrage of more than 300 drones, four cruise missiles and three ballistic missiles, the Ukrainian air force said, as the Russian bombardment of Ukrainian cities continued despite Trump's pressure for it to end.&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-russia-ukraine-war-633a216d0506c82353fc7745b69c0fe0">U.S.-led peace efforts</a>&nbsp;have also failed to gain momentum.

Trump had said on July 14 that he would implement “severe tariffs” on Russia unless a peace deal is reached by early September. On Monday, Trump said he would now give Putin 10 to 12 days, meaning he wants peace efforts to make progress by Aug. 7-9.

The plan includes possible sanctions and secondary tariffs targeting Russia’s trading partners. The formal announcement would come later Monday or on Tuesday, Trump said.

“No reason in waiting,” Trump said of the shorter timeline. “We just don’t see any progress being made.”

Putin has “got to make a deal. Too many people are dying,” Trump said during a visit to Scotland.

There was no immediate response from Russia.

Trump repeated his criticism of Putin for talking about ending the war but continuing to bombard Ukrainian civilians.

“And I say, that’s not the way to do it,” Trump said. He added, “I’m disappointed in President Putin.”

Asked at a news conference about a potential meeting with the Russian leader, Trump said: “I’m not so interested in talking anymore.”

Just after noon on Monday, crews responded to a house fire at 1268 SW Polk Street in Topeka, according to Fire Marshal Alan Stahl.

First responders found smoke coming from a two-story house divided into apartments. Firefighters began an offensive fire attack, and kept the fire confined to the room of fire origin. Multiple occupants were home at the time of the fire and were able to evacuate before the fire department arrived on scene. Fire crews rescued one dog and provided emergency care. The pet was&nbsp;then transported to a veterinarian by its owner.

After preliminary investigation the cause of the fire remains under investigation. The residence did not have smoke detectors, according to Stahl.

Earlier this month, 20-year-old Hugo Caesar Guzman, Jr. pleaded guilty to distribution of a controlled substance resulting in<a href="https://everloved.com/life-of/wesley-howard/obituary/"> death of Wesley Howard</a>&nbsp;of Garnder in 2022, according to the Johnson County District Attorney's office.

In October 2023, Guzman was charged with distribution of drugs causing death and two counts of fentanyl distribution.

“I'm not a drawing person,” Trump said. “I don't do drawings of women, that I can tell you.”

Trump also said he declined Epstein's invitation to visit a private island the financier owned.

“I never had the privilege of going to his island, and I did turn it down, but a lot of people in Palm Beach were invited to his island,” Trump said. “In one of my very good moments, I turned it down. I didn't want to go to his island.”

While conducting the search warrant, officers located marijuana, synthetic marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

Police: Suspect was selling drugs from Kansas home

A federal judge on Monday ruled Planned Parenthood clinics nationwide must continue to be reimbursed for Medicaid funding as the nation’s largest abortion provider fights President Donald Trump’s administration over efforts to defund the organization in his signature tax legislation.

The new order replaces a previous edict handed down by U.S. District Judge Indira Talwani in Boston last week. Talwani&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/planned-parenthood-medicaid-funding-cuts-trump-0bc2c9fc09bce3f0453f0995025bd85f">initially granted a preliminary injunction specifically blocking</a>&nbsp;the government from cutting Medicaid payments to Planned Parenthood members that didn’t provide abortion care or didn’t meet a threshold of at least $800,000 in Medicaid reimbursements in a given year.

“Patients are likely to suffer adverse health consequences where care is disrupted or unavailable,” Talwani wrote in her Monday order. “In particular, restricting Members’ ability to provide healthcare services threatens an increase in unintended pregnancies and attendant complications because of reduced access to effective contraceptives, and an increase in undiagnosed and untreated STIs.”

A provision in Trump’s tax bill instructed the federal government to end Medicaid payments for one year to abortion providers that received more than $800,000 from Medicaid in 2023, even to those like Planned Parenthood that also offer medical services like contraception, pregnancy tests and STD testing.

Although Planned Parenthood is not specifically named in the statute, which went into effect July 4, the organization’s leaders say it was meant to affect their nearly 600 centers in 48 states. However, a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/abortion-provider-defunding-maine-planned-parenthood-005a43ca6f0d06a0c3173452a315b3cc">major medical provider in Maine</a>&nbsp;and likely others have also been hit.

In her Monday order, Talwani said that the court was “not enjoining the federal government from regulating abortion and is not directing the federal government to fund elective abortions or any healthcare service not otherwise eligible for Medicaid coverage.” Instead, Talwani said that her decision would block the federal government from excluding groups like Planned Parenthood from Medicaid reimbursements when they have demonstrated a substantial likelihood of success in their legal challenge.

<a href="https://apnews.com/article/planned-parenthood-funding-medicaid-cuts-ed41fcdc824573c51b66571dacbe7a8f">In its lawsuit</a>, Planned Parenthood had argued that they would be at risk of closing nearly 200 clinics in 24 states if they are cut off from Medicaid funds. They estimated this would result in more than 1 million patients losing care.

“We’re suing the Trump administration over this targeted attack on Planned Parenthood health centers and the patients who rely on them for care,” said Planned Parenthood’s president and CEO Alexis McGill Johnson in a statement on Monday. “This case is about making sure that patients who use Medicaid as their insurance to get birth control, cancer screenings, and STI testing and treatment can continue to do so at their local Planned Parenthood health center, and we will make that clear in court.”

The lawsuit was filed earlier this month against Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. by Planned Parenthood Federation of America and its member organizations in Massachusetts and Utah.

The federal department of health did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Previously, the department said it strongly disagreed with the judge’s initial order that allowed some Planned Parenthood members to receive Medicaid funding.

“States should not be forced to fund organizations that have chosen political advocacy over patient care,” said the department’s communication director, Andrew Nixon. Doing so, he said, “undermines state flexibility” and “concerns about accountability.”

Medicaid is a government health care program that serves millions of low-income and disabled Americans. Nearly half of Planned Parenthood’s patients rely on Medicaid.

Just after 7p.m. Sunday, police were dispatched to the area of 18th and Prospect on a reported shooting. When officers arrived, they located a witness who had summoned them to the area of 18th and Benton advising he heard several gun shots near that location, according to KCPD&nbsp;Officer Alayna Gonzalez.

Officers responded to 18th and Benton, where they located a victim in a grassy area near a convenience store. The man was unresponsive, and suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. EMS responded to the scene and declared the victim deceased at that time.

Homicide detectives and crime scene personnel responded to the scene to begin gathering witness statements and collecting any evidence. Several witnesses remained in the area and assisted detectives in making progress on identifying an adult male person of interest. Police have not released the name of the victim.

WASHINGTON —Missouri U.S. Senator Josh Hawley announced Friday that he plans to introduce legislation that would “send a rebate check to every working person in America.”

BOULDER, Colo. (AP) — Colorado coach Deion Sanders disclosed Monday that he was diagnosed with an aggressive form of bladder cancer but after surgery his oncologist considered him cured, so he plans to coach this season.

Dr. Janet Kukreja, the director of urologic oncology at the CU Cancer Center/UCHealth University of Colorado hospital, said Sanders had his bladder removed as part of the surgical plan.

“It was dynamic. It was tough. It wasn’t a cakewalk. It wasn’t easy,” said Sanders, who arrived to his news conference wearing a cowboy hat and overalls along with sunglasses, which he took off after getting choked up. “That was a fight, but we made it.”

Sanders, who turns 58 next month, spoke on the eve of fall camp as he enters his third season overseeing the Buffaloes. He brought his medical team with him to discuss his diagnosis. A section of his intestine was reconstructed to function as a bladder.

Sanders said he lost about 25 pounds, leading him to joke, “I was like Atlanta Falcons Prime at one point.”

He remained upbeat through the entire ordeal.

“He never folded one time and never wavered,” team trainer Lauren Askevold said. "You couldn’t ask for a better patient because he wants to get up and get going right. So it’s been awesome. It’s been a hectic journey, but there’s a blessing very in disguise with all this.”

The charismatic coach returned to campus last week and announced on social media, “Back and Feeling Great!” He’s missed football camps in Boulder this summer amid reports that he’s been ill.

On Sunday, the production crew of “Well Off Media,” which chronicles Sanders and the Buffaloes, posted a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6igq44y-7BI">video on YouTube</a>&nbsp;of the coach’s first meeting with the team. In the middle of the clip, there was a scene, dated May 9, where Sanders said: “I don’t know if I’m ready mentally, emotionally. Last night was tough, yesterday was tough, because I had to make a will. That’s not easy at all, to think that you may not be here.”

Sanders has dealt with other health issues. Many of them have involved his left foot since having two toes amputated in 2021 because of blood clot issues while he was coaching at Jackson State. He missed media day in 2023, his inaugural year at Colorado, after a procedure to remove a blood clot from his right leg and another to straighten toes on his left foot.

Just after 11p.m. Friday, officers filed a report for aggravated robbery and aggravated battery in the 3600 block of Everett Drive in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

&nbsp;A 17-year-old man was listed as the victim when it was reported unknown suspects battered him in his driveway and stole personal property.

NEW YORK (AP) — When Amrita Bhasin, 24, learned that&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-japan-south-korea-tariff-25-2c725e8f06367e20f9300c1081ea4ec0">products from South Korea</a>&nbsp;might be subject to a new tax when they entered the United States, she decided to stock up on the sheet masks from Korean brands like U-Need and MediHeal she uses a few times a week.

“I did a recent haul to stockpile,” she said. “I bought 50 in bulk, which should last me a few months.”

South Korea is one of the countries that hopes to secure a trade deal before the Aug. 1 date&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-tariffs-economy-trade-tax-404840988e58dbfd491afe00f2e605f6">President Donald Trump set</a>&nbsp;for enforcing nation-specific tariffs. A not-insignificant slice of the U.S. population has skin in the game when it comes to Seoul avoiding a 25% duty on its exports.

Asian skin care has been a booming global business for a more than a decade, with consumers in Europe, North and South America, and increasingly the Middle East, snapping up creams, serums and balms&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/3ee3040d1f1245f88b524f0afa641cc2">from South Korea</a>, Japan and China.

In the United States and elsewhere, Korean cosmetics, or K-beauty for short, have dominated the trend. A craze for all-in-one “BB creams” — a combination of moisturizer, foundation and sunscreen — morphed into a fascination with&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/shower-basics-tiktok-social-media-dermatologist-8a96743d7b86c329703f7736a7306961">10-step rituals</a>&nbsp;and ingredients like snail mucin, heartleaf and rice water.

<a href="https://apnews.com/article/hyundai-georgia-evs-electric-vehicles-ad746b27194d05703b941e76e56df9fc">Vehicles</a>&nbsp;and electronics may be South Korea's top exports to the U.S. by value, but the country shipped more&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/influenced-skincare-routine-mental-health-f59bb09114ab93323e3a47197a1ad914">skin care</a>&nbsp;and cosmetics to the U.S. than any other last year, according to data from market research company Euromonitor. France, with storied beauty brands&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/a4bd8559a742184924010635267196c7">like L'Oreal</a>&nbsp;and Chanel, was second, Euromonitor said.

Statistics compiled by the U.S. International Trade Commission, an independent federal agency, show the U.S. imported $1.7 billion worth of South Korean cosmetics in 2024, a 54% increase from a year earlier.

“Korean beauty products not only add a lot of variety and choice for Americans, they really embraced them because they were offering something different for American consumers,” Mary Lovely, a senior fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics, said.

Along with media offerings&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/d9c6d003653795153157ebf98876db77">such as “Parasite”</a>&nbsp;and “Squid Games,” and the popularity of&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/bts-suga-south-korea-military-service-boy-band-a0fd2487c9859805f50a891b7f2b93a0">K-pop bands like BTS</a>, K-beauty has helped boost South Korea’s profile globally, she said.

“It’s all part and parcel really of the same thing,” Lovely said. “And it can’t be completely stopped by a 25% tariff, but it’s hard to see how it won’t influence how much is sold in the U.S. And I think what we’re hearing from producers is that it also really decreases the number of products they want to offer in this market.”

Senti Senti, a retailer that sells international beauty products at two New York boutiques and through an e-commerce site, saw a bit of “panic buying” by customers when Trump&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/asian-grocery-stores-tariffs-prices-77d7209f542a027eafd5d0d4bb213dbf">first imposed</a>&nbsp;punitive tariffs on goods from specific countries, manager Winnie Zhong said.

The rush slowed down after the president paused the new duties for 90 days and hasn't picked up again, Zhong said, even with Trump&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/video/trump-sets-25-tariffs-on-imports-from-japan-and-south-korea-ap-explains-47af6b9746994faf957afff2e98e1968">saying on July 7</a>&nbsp;that a 25% tax on imports from Japan and South Korea would go into effect on Aug. 1.

Japan, the Philippines and Indonesia subsequently&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-tariffs-japan-indonesia-philippines-6e1829cb570d945d13c00f07059a41d4">reached agreements</a>&nbsp;with the Trump administration that lowered the tariff rates their exported goods faced — in Japan's case, from 25% to 15% — still higher than the current baseline of 10% tariff.

But South Korea has yet to clinch an agreement, despite&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/south-korea-us-trade-trump-tariffs-e91036b57be93e1ead7d777f0717971f">having a free trade agreement</a>&nbsp;since 2012 that allowed cosmetics and most other consumer goods to enter the U.S. tax-free.

Since the first store owned by Senti Senti opened 16 years ago, beauty products from Japan and South Korea became more of a focus and now account for 90% of the stock. The business hasn't had to pass on any tariff-related costs to customers yet, but that won’t be possible if the products are subject to a 25% import tax, Zhong said.

“I’m not really sure where the direction of K-beauty will go to with the tariffs in place, because one of the things with K-beauty or Asian beauty is that it’s supposed to be accessible pricing,” she said.

Devoted fans of Asian cosmetics will often buy direct from Asia and wait weeks for their packages to arrive because the products typically cost less than they do in American stores. Rather than stocking up on their favorite sunscreens, lip tints and toners, some shoppers are taking a pause due to the tariff uncertainty.

Los Angeles resident Jen Chae, a content creator with over 1.2 million YouTube subscribers, has explored Korean and Japanese beauty products and became personally intrigued by Chinese beauty brands over the last year.

When the tariffs were first announced, Chae temporarily paused ordering from sites such as YesStyle.com, a shopping platform owned by an e-commerce company based in Hong Kong. She did not know if she would have to pay customs duties on the products she bought or the ones brands sent to her as a creator.

“I wasn’t sure if those would automatically charge the entire package with a blanket tariff cost, or if it was just on certain items,” Chae said. On its website, YesStyle says it will give customers store credit to reimburse them for import charges.

At Ohlolly, an online store focused on Korean products, owners Sue Greene and Herra Namhie are taking a similar pause.

They purchase direct from South Korea and from licensed wholesalers in the U.S., and store their inventory in a warehouse in Ontario, California. After years of no duties, a 25% import tax would create a “huge increase in costs to us,” Namhie said.

She and Greene made two recent orders to replenish their stock when the tariffs were at 10%. But they have put further restocks on hold "because I don’t think we can handle 25%,” Namhie said. They'd have to raise prices, and then shoppers might go elsewhere.

The business owners and sisters are holding out on hope the U.S. and Korea settle on a lower tariff or carve out exceptions for smaller ticket items like beauty products. But they only have two to four months of inventory in their warehouse. They say that in a month they'll have to make a decision on what products to order, what to discontinue and what prices will have to increase.

Rachel Weingarten, a former makeup artist who writes a daily beauty newsletter called “Hello Gorgeous!,” said while she’s devoted to K-beauty products like lip masks and toner pads, she doesn’t think stockpiling is a sound practice.

“Maybe one or two products, but natural oils, vulnerable packaging and expiration dates mean that your products could go rancid before you can get to them,” she said.

Weingarten said she’ll still buy Korean products if prices go up, but that the beauty world is bigger than one country. “I’d still indulge in my favorites, but am always looking for great products in general,” she said.

Bhasin, in Menlo Park, California, plans to keep buying her face masks too, even if the price goes up, because she likes the quality of Korean masks.

“If prices will go up, I will not shift to U.S. products,” she said. “For face masks, I feel there are not a ton of solid and reliable substitutes in the U.S.”

France, with storied beauty brands&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/a4bd8559a742184924010635267196c7">like L'Oreal</a>&nbsp;and Chanel, was second, Euromonitor said.Statistics compiled by the U.S. International Trade Commission, an independent federal agency, show the U.S. imported $1.7 billion worth of South Korean cosmetics in 2024, a 54% increase from a year earlier.“Korean beauty products not only add a lot of variety and choice for Americans, they really embraced them because they were offering something different for American consumers,” Mary Lovely, a senior fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics, said.Along with media offerings&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/d9c6d003653795153157ebf98876db77">such as “Parasite”</a>&nbsp;and “Squid Games,” and the popularity of&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/bts-suga-south-korea-military-service-boy-band-a0fd2487c9859805f50a891b7f2b93a0">K-pop bands like BTS</a>, K-beauty has helped boost South Korea’s profile globally, she said.“It’s all part and parcel really of the same thing,” Lovely said. “And it can’t be completely stopped by a 25% tariff, but it’s hard to see how it won’t influence how much is sold in the U.S. And I think what we’re hearing from producers is that it also really decreases the number of products they want to offer in this market.”Senti Senti, a retailer that sells international beauty products at two New York boutiques and through an e-commerce site, saw a bit of “panic buying” by customers when Trump&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/asian-grocery-stores-tariffs-prices-77d7209f542a027eafd5d0d4bb213dbf">first imposed</a>&nbsp;punitive tariffs on goods from specific countries, manager Winnie Zhong said.The rush slowed down after the president paused the new duties for 90 days and hasn't picked up again, Zhong said, even with Trump&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/video/trump-sets-25-tariffs-on-imports-from-japan-and-south-korea-ap-explains-47af6b9746994faf957afff2e98e1968">saying on July 7</a>&nbsp;that a 25% tax on imports from Japan and South Korea would go into effect on Aug. 1.Japan, the Philippines and Indonesia subsequently&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-tariffs-japan-indonesia-philippines-6e1829cb570d945d13c00f07059a41d4">reached agreements</a>&nbsp;with the Trump administration that lowered the tariff rates their exported goods faced — in Japan's case, from 25% to 15% — still higher than the current baseline of 10% tariff.But South Korea has yet to clinch an agreement, despite&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/south-korea-us-trade-trump-tariffs-e91036b57be93e1ead7d777f0717971f">having a free trade agreement</a>&nbsp;since 2012 that allowed cosmetics and most other consumer goods to enter the U.S. tax-free.Since the first store owned by Senti Senti opened 16 years ago, beauty products from Japan and South Korea became more of a focus and now account for 90% of the stock. The business hasn't had to pass on any tariff-related costs to customers yet, but that won’t be possible if the products are subject to a 25% import tax, Zhong said.“I’m not really sure where the direction of K-beauty will go to with the tariffs in place, because one of the things with K-beauty or Asian beauty is that it’s supposed to be accessible pricing,” she said.Devoted fans of Asian cosmetics will often buy direct from Asia and wait weeks for their packages to arrive because the products typically cost less than they do in American stores. Rather than stocking up on their favorite sunscreens, lip tints and toners, some shoppers are taking a pause due to the tariff uncertainty.Los Angeles resident Jen Chae, a content creator with over 1.2 million YouTube subscribers, has explored Korean and Japanese beauty products and became personally intrigued by Chinese beauty brands over the last year.When the tariffs were first announced, Chae temporarily paused ordering from sites such as YesStyle.com, a shopping platform owned by an e-commerce company based in Hong Kong. She did not know if she would have to pay customs duties on the products she bought or the ones brands sent to her as a creator.“I wasn’t sure if those would automatically charge the entire package with a blanket tariff cost, or if it was just on certain items,” Chae said. On its website, YesStyle says it will give customers store credit to reimburse them for import charges.At Ohlolly, an online store focused on Korean products, owners Sue Greene and Herra Namhie are taking a similar pause.They purchase direct from South Korea and from licensed wholesalers in the U.S., and store their inventory in a warehouse in Ontario, California. After years of no duties, a 25% import tax would create a “huge increase in costs to us,” Namhie said.She and Greene made two recent orders to replenish their stock when the tariffs were at 10%. But they have put further restocks on hold "because I don’t think we can handle 25%,” Namhie said. They'd have to raise prices, and then shoppers might go elsewhere.The business owners and sisters are holding out on hope the U.S. and Korea settle on a lower tariff or carve out exceptions for smaller ticket items like beauty products. But they only have two to four months of inventory in their warehouse. They say that in a month they'll have to make a decision on what products to order, what to discontinue and what prices will have to increase.Rachel Weingarten, a former makeup artist who writes a daily beauty newsletter called “Hello Gorgeous!,” said while she’s devoted to K-beauty products like lip masks and toner pads, she doesn’t think stockpiling is a sound practice.“Maybe one or two products, but natural oils, vulnerable packaging and expiration dates mean that your products could go rancid before you can get to them,” she said.Weingarten said she’ll still buy Korean products if prices go up, but that the beauty world is bigger than one country. “I’d still indulge in my favorites, but am always looking for great products in general,” she said.Bhasin, in Menlo Park, California, plans to keep buying her face masks too, even if the price goes up, because she likes the quality of Korean masks.“If prices will go up, I will not shift to U.S. products,” she said. “For face masks, I feel there are not a ton of solid and reliable substitutes in the U.S.”___AP audience engagement editor Karena Phan in Los Angeles contributed to this report.
