KANSAS CITY —Law enforcement are investigating another homicide in Kansas City.

Just after 11:30a.m. Sunday, patrol officers were dispatched a report of a vehicle accident in the area of 56th and Woodland in Kansas City, according to KCPD&nbsp;Sergeant Phil DiMartino.

The call was upgraded to a shooting. As officers arrived they located an adult male victim inside of a vehicle, suffering from a gunshot wound. 

Officers immediately began performing life saving measures and ordered EMS. Emergency medical personnel pronounced the man deceased on scene.This is being investigated as a homicide.&nbsp;

Homicide: Man found with gunshot wound in Kansas City

DAMASCUS —On Saturday, U.S. Forces conducted a precision airstrike in Northwest Syria targeting and killing a senior finance and logistics official in the terrorist organization Hurras al-Din (HaD), an Al-Qaeda affiliate, according to a statement from the U.S. Central Command.

"The airstrike is part of CENTCOM's ongoing commitment, along with partners in the region, to disrupt and degrade efforts by terrorists to plan, organize, and conduct attacks against civilians and military personnel from the U.S., our allies, and our partners throughout the region and beyond.'

On Feb. 12, Iraqi Security Forces (ISF), enabled by U.S. Central Command&nbsp; forces, conducted an airstrike in the vicinity of Rawa, Iraq, killing five ISIS operatives, according to a statement from the U.S. Central Command.

An initial post-strike clearance confirmed the dead ISIS operatives, various medium and small caliber weapons, grenades, suicide explosive belts, and ammunition.

The ISF-led operation is part of the ongoing Defeat-ISIS campaign to disrupt and degrade ISIS' capabilities, dismantle their attack networks, and ensure the enduring defeat of ISIS. Coalition Joint Task Force - Operation Inherent Resolve (CTF-OIR) enabled ISF during the operation by providing technical support and intelligence. CJTF-OIR advises, assists, and enables partner forces to secure the lasting defeat of ISIS and to enable the establishment of enduring security cooperation frameworks. 

"ISF continue to be a credible and capable fighting element leading the D-ISIS mission in Iraq and are a valuable partner in efforts to diminish ISIS’s presence and its radical ideologies.'

"ISIS remains a threat to the region and beyond, and CENTCOM, along with partners and allies, will continue to aggressively pursue these terrorists."

"We will continue to relentlessly pursue terrorists in order to defend our homeland, and U.S., allied, and partner personnel in the region,” said Gen. Michael Erik Kurilla, commander, U.S. Central Command.

U.S. forces kill senior operative of Al-Qaeda affiliate 

KANSAS CITY– A man who purchased more than 50 firearms has been indicted by a federal grand jury for illegally trafficking firearms and methamphetamine, according to the United State's Attorney.

David Allen Gaunt, 57, Strafford, Mo., was charged in a 16-count indictment returned by a federal grand jury in Kansas City. The indictment replaces a criminal complaint that was filed against Gaunt on Jan. 16, 2025.

The federal indictment alleges that Gaunt participated in a conspiracy to traffic firearms from June 21, 2023, to Jan. 23, 2025. Those firearms, according to the indictment, included a Kalashnikov pistol, a Century Arms pistol, a Tokarev shotgun, a Canik pistol and an HS Produkt pistol. In addition to the conspiracy, Gaunt is charged with one count of trafficking those firearms to a recipient who was legally prohibited from possessing them.

The federal indictment also charges Gaunt with being an unlawful user of a controlled substance while in possession of 15 different firearms. Gaunt is charged with four counts of making a false statement to a licensed firearms dealer in order to purchase firearms, four counts of possessing methamphetamine with the intent to distribute, four counts of possessing firearms in furtherance of a drug-trafficking crime, and one count of distributing methamphetamine.

According to an affidavit filed in support of the original criminal complaint, Gaunt has personally purchased more than 50 firearms. On every purchase, the affidavit says, Gaunt marked “No” on the federal form that asked, “Are you an unlawful user of, or addicted to, marijuana or any depressant, stimulant, narcotic drug, or any other controlled substance?” Eighteen of these firearms have been recovered by law enforcement, from Gaunt and others. Additionally, 11 of the firearms Gaunt purchased have been either sold to or pawned at pawn shops.

Springfield police officers seized three of those firearms during the execution of two search warrants in separate drug-trafficking investigations in June 2023, and the Greene County Sheriff’s Department seized one of those firearms during enforcement activities in July 2023. All of the firearms were seized from individuals who were legally prohibited from possessing firearms, the affidavit says, and were traced to Gaunt as the original purchaser.

On Aug. 16, 2023, Springfield police officers stopped Gaunt near S. Glenstone Avenue and E. St. Louis Street. When officers searched his vehicle, they found six firearms. On Nov. 6, 2024, Springfield officers conducted a traffic stop of a vehicle operated by Gaunt. Officers seized a Sig Sauer 9mm pistol from Gaunt’s waistband. A clear plastic bag of methamphetamine was found in the center console of the vehicle.

KC grand jury indicts man who purchased more than 50 firearms

JACKSON COUNTY—Law enforcement are investigating two men on drug allegations.

Just after 7:30a.m. February 10, a Sheriff’s Deputy located a stolen vehicle west of Mayetta, according to Sheriff Tim Morse The vehicle had been reported stolen on February 4, 2025, in Lansing, Kansas.

Deputies arrested two men and booked them into the Jackson County Jail. Justin Joe Riis, 31, of Topeka, is being held on requested charges that include distribution of methamphetamine, possession of opiates, interference with law enforcement altering/conceal/destroy evidence, possession of drug paraphernalia.&nbsp; 

Curtis Dean Sult, 63, of Lansing, is jailed on requested charges for possession of stolen property, distribution of methamphetamine, possession of opiates, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia. The PBPN Police assisted with the incident.

Sheriff: 2 Kansas meth dealers caught in stolen vehicle

PLATTE COUNTY, WY (AP)—An older woman in southeast Wyoming is hospitalized with&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/bird-flu">bird flu</a>, state health department officials said Friday.

It’s the state’s first human case of Type A H5N1 influenza, which is spreading&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/bird-flu-cats-raw-pet-food-10e7b3bcaffe92ab84cadcbcab1f09c6">through animals</a>&nbsp;and some people. Nearly 70 people in the U.S. have been&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/bird-flu-nevada-strain-06ca2696a3477b7534cc4d6b3a5edfa8">reported infected with bird flu</a>&nbsp;in the last year, according to data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, though researchers and studies suggest that’s likely an undercount.

The woman, who lives in Platte County, Wyoming, likely was infected through direct contact with an&nbsp;<a href="https://health.wyo.gov/wyomings-first-human-bird-flu-case-confirmed/" target="_blank">infected poultry flock</a>&nbsp;at her home, the state health department said in a news release. She has other health conditions and is hospitalized in another state.

Dr. Alexia Harrist, the state health officer and state epidemiologist, said Wyoming residents shouldn’t have “a high level of concern” about the human case, the test result for which was confirmed by a CDC on Friday.

Most confirmed human cases of bird flu across the U.S. came with mild symptoms.

“Unfortunately, this patient’s experience has been much more serious,” Harrist said in the news release.

A new study published by the CDC showed&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/bird-flu-cdc-vets-e468e1dec4c4344c4719f0b23be00540">bird flu has silently spread</a>&nbsp;from animals to some veterinarians.

Bird flu has been spreading in wild birds in the U.S. since 2022. The virus was detected for the first time in U.S. dairy cows last year. It has infected more than 960 cattle herds in 16 states.

Bird flu confirmed in woman who likely had contact with infected flock at her home

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) —&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/donald-trump">Donald Trump</a>, attending Sunday’s&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/nascar-daytona-500-trump-earnhardt-fc4fa6416f3f3b277b1e004a933783eb">Daytona 500</a>, for the second time as president, called the opening event of the NASCAR series a unifying event that possesses a spirit that will “fuel America’s Golden Age” — which he has said would happen under his leadership.

In a presidential message released as he flew to Daytona Beach, Florida, Trump said the Daytona 500 brings together people from all walks of life in a “shared passion for speed, adrenaline and the thrill of the race.”

“From the roar of the engines on the track to the echo of ‘The Star-Spangled Banner’ soaring through the stands, the Daytona 500 is a timeless tribute to the speed, strength and unyielding spirit that make America great,” Trump said. “That spirit is what will fuel America’s Golden Age, and if we harness it, the future is truly ours.”

Trump said in his Jan. 20 inaugural address that “the golden age of America begins right now.”

Air Force One buzzed the Daytona International Speedway before it landed. Trump traveled from West Palm Beach, Florida, airport with several guests, including his son Eric, his wife, grandson Luke, Transportation Secretary&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/sean-duffy-transportation-crash-dca-5d372d1945929293f10c1f0de58df3cc">Sean Duffy</a>&nbsp;and Interior Secretary&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-oil-gas-industry-burgum-interior-ally-3ebe90d0207c99866365d72e74eda371">Doug Burgum</a>&nbsp;and his wife, Kathryn, the White House said. Several members of Congress are traveled with Trump.

His motorcade arrived at the speedway by driving onto a portion of the track. Trump’s limousine later led drivers on two ceremonial laps before he went on the radio to urge them to have fun and be safe.

“This is your favorite president. I’m a big fan. I am a really big fan of you people. How you do this I don’t know, but I just want you to be safe,” Trump said. “You’re talented people and you’re great people and great Americans. Have a good day, have a lot of fun and I’ll see you later.”

Trump was at&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/fdb2eff94fa935ed3854fbbdb3703faf">the race in 2020</a>&nbsp;while running for a second term. He was given the honor of being grand marshal of NASCAR’s biggest and most prestigious event of the year and delivered the command for drivers to start their engines. Air Force One did a flyover and his limousine drove on the speedway back then, too.

Sunday’s race got underway in front of a sold-out crowd but&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/nascar-daytona-500-trump-rain-9fc0437921b3c9fa289c4d25f08a90f8">was halted about an hour later after eight laps because of heavy rain</a>&nbsp;that was expected to cause a lengthy delay. The sport’s fans are seen as leaning conservative and many in the stands on Sunday wore red caps that said “MAGA” for Trump’s “Make America Great Again” slogan. Trump, who watched the race from a suite, also wore a MAGA cap.

Trump is a sports fan. He is an avid golfer and attends college football games and UFC matches.

It’s unclear how many IRS workers will be affected.

Previously, the administration announced a plan to offer buyouts to almost all federal employees through a “deferred resignation program” to quickly reduce the government workforce. The program deadline was Feb. 6, and administration officials said employees who accept will be able to stop working while still collecting a paycheck until Sept. 30.

However, IRS employees involved in the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/irs-tax-season-direct-file-refund-31fcb0c4466e8ef286952d3e22b9c277">2025 tax season</a>&nbsp;were told&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/treasury-union-irs-worker-buyouts-tax-season-222d98c76b5e30e8f94738bb0c01b938">they will not be allowed to accept a buyout offer</a>&nbsp;from the Trump administration until after the taxpayer filing deadline, according to a letter sent recently to IRS employees.

SHAWNEE COUNTY —Law enforcement continue investigating a bank robbery in Topeka and have released security camera images of the suspect.

Just before 5p.m. January 13, a suspect, described as a black male, 5-foot-10 inches tall, approximately 200-215 pounds and wearing&nbsp; a black jacket with a hood, dark colored jeans, dark colored tennis shoes and a face covering,&nbsp; entered&nbsp;Equity Bank, 3825 SW 29th&nbsp;Street in Topeka,&nbsp;according to a media release from the FBI. 

The suspect approached the teller and made a verbal demand for money and brandished a firearm.

The suspect fled the bank in an unknown direction with an undisclosed amount of money. There were no injuries.

Christianity is by far the largest faith in America, and Christian conservatives have a strong grip on the levers of government. That dominance is leaving many to question why&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/donald-trump">President Donald Trump’s</a>&nbsp;new task force on eradicating&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-national-prayer-breakfast-30ff6f55a2e3c7b8643a15e7b158537d">anti-Christian bias</a>&nbsp;is needed.

Critics see the task force initiative as unnecessary and pandering to Trump’s base. But some Christian supporters said it is overdue, claiming the Biden administration had discriminated against them through actions and inactions.

The two-year task force, chaired by Attorney General Pam Bondi and composed of Cabinet and other government representatives, is assigned to review and “identify any unlawful anti-Christian” actions under the Biden administration, change any objectionable policies and recommend steps to rectify any past failures.

Bruce Ledewitz, a law professor at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, criticized the mindset behind the executive order as that of a powerful group claiming victimhood.

The Christian conservative movement — a core Republican constituency — now has significant sway on the Supreme Court and in numerous states, Congress and the presidency, Ledewitz said. And still, they declare, “We are victims,” he said.

“There’s a struggle for the soul of America,” said Ledewitz, who studies the relationship between constitutional law and religion. “We call this a culture war, but it’s very deep,” animated by the charge “that you people, the Democrats, you are not religious, and we are.”

Trump said exactly that at a National Prayer Breakfast gathering on Feb. 6.

“The opposing side, they oppose religion, they oppose God,” Trump claimed, accusing the previous administration of engaging in “persecution.” President Joe Biden, a regular Mass-attending Catholic, often spoke of drawing on the values of his faith and had warm relations with Pope Francis.

But Ryan Bangert, a senior vice president at the conservative legal organization Alliance Defending Freedom, said the task force is overdue.

He said the Biden administration was “deliberately targeting Christian beliefs through discriminatory policies” on issues such as abortion and gender. These are “not fringe beliefs” and are shared by other religious groups besides Christians, he said.

Do the cases of alleged bias add up to a pattern?

Critics said Trump is claiming to see persecution in distorted case descriptions, a calendar coincidence and other situations that, while raising concerns, don’t add up to a pattern.

For example, Trump spoke at the prayer breakfast about how he pardoned a set of abortion protesters. He mischaracterized the case of one woman, who was sentenced to prison at age 75, as being “put in jail because she was praying.” She and co-defendants were sentenced for blockading an abortion clinic in violation of the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances Act, enacted in the 1990s after violent attacks on abortion providers.

But Bangert said the Biden administration “severely weaponized” the FACE Act, being far more aggressive against anti-abortion protesters than those who vandalized or threatened other institutions protected by the same act, including churches and pregnancy centers that counsel women not to have abortions. Those incurred a spate of attacks after the Supreme Court, in 2022, overturned the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision that had made abortion legal nationwide.

A Biden-era Justice Department document lists one case of a conviction of three activists who supported abortion rights and vandalized pregnancy centers. That list otherwise documents numerous prosecutions against anti-abortion protesters who blockaded, threatened or disrupted clinic activities.

The act was “simply deployed to prosecute pro-life advocates who, had they been advocating for any other set of beliefs, would never have been prosecuted by the government,” Bangert said. “Yet the Biden administration refused to enforce the FACE Act in cases where pro-life pregnancy centers or churches or synagogues were targeted.”

The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops welcomed the creation of the task force.

“We are hopeful in hearing the news that the Administration is seeking to address anti-Christian bias and incidents, and we stand ready to offer our own insights into how we might ensure that all people are able to fully exercise their religious freedom,” said conference spokesperson Chieko Noguchi.

The conference keeps a running list of reports of vandalism and attacks on churches, reporting at least 366 cases of arson, damaged religious statues and other incidents since 2020. The conference’s religious liberty committee released a report in 2024 citing a bipartisan list of concerns ranging from mandates from the Biden administration regarding gender and abortion to a crackdown by Texas’ Republican attorney general on Catholic organizations serving immigrants.

Trump’s executive order claims that Biden-era equal-employment officials sought to “force Christians to affirm radical transgender ideology against their faith” and that another department “sought to drive Christians out of the foster-care system.”

Trump claimed the FBI in 2023 “asserted that traditional Catholics were domestic-terrorism threats and suggested infiltrating Catholic churches as ’threat mitigation.’”

The claim emerged from the case of a man of who pleaded guilty to a federal weapons charge and who had spoken of intending to kill Jews and other minorities. He had been attending a church espousing traditionalist Catholic beliefs -- though not in communion with the pope – where he reportedly sought to recruit others, according to a Justice Department review.

A leaked FBI report cited a purported link between “Racially or Ethnically Motivated Violent Extremists” and “Radical Traditionalist Catholic” adherents.

A Justice Department inspector general subsequently found “there was no evidence of malicious intent” but that the memo showed a failure to “adhere to analytic tradecraft standards.”

Biden had issued a declaration proclaiming March 31, 2024, as “Transgender Day of Visibility,” which occurs annually on that date. In 2024, that date also happened to be Easter Sunday. While churches have a range of views on LGBTQ+ issues, the proclamation’s timing led to&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/fact-check-biden-easter-egg-transgender-proclamation-667689922248">indignant responses</a>&nbsp;from conservative Christian leaders that do not affirm transgender identity.

A White House action focused on a specific religion is not unprecedented. The Biden administration, for example, issued strategy plans to combat antisemitism and Islamophobia.

The secular advocacy group Freedom From Religion Foundation questioned the new task force on the social media platform X, saying “government’s job is to protect everyone’s rights, not give special treatment to one religion.” It questioned whether the task force would “just push a Christian nationalist agenda.”

Ledewitz said the task force doesn’t violate the constitutional prohibition on the state establishment of a religion — in theory.

“If, in practice, it’s going to have government promote Christianity, that violates the Establishment clause,” he said.

Ledewitz cited the Supreme Court’s 2017 ruling in favor of a Colorado baker who refused to bake a wedding cake for a same-sex couple, saying that his state’s Civil Rights Commission showed “hostility” to his religious beliefs.

“Government is not allowed to be hostile to religion,” Ledewitz said.

However, Ledewitz said there is no case to be made for U.S. Christians suffering systemic persecution.

Though the numbers of&nbsp;<a href="https://projects.apnews.com/features/2023/the-nones/the-nones-us.html">people without religion</a>&nbsp;have grown to about 3 in 10 American adults, Christians still make up nearly&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/religion-ap-poll-nones-survey-111e9f5bbcaaa47ea522f1aae9c24df9">two-thirds of the population</a>.

Matthew Taylor, Protestant scholar at the Institute for Islamic, Christian and Jewish Studies in Baltimore, said the task force raises concerns. Taylor’s 2024 book, “The Violent Take It By Force: The Christian Movement That Is Threatening Our Democracy,” recounts the role of&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/conservative-christians-spiritual-warfare-donald-trump-kamala-harris-9c861aa7c58907ff67bde3c3499a9365">charismatic leaders</a>&nbsp;who have been among Trump’s most fervent supporters.

In a majority Christian country, “it’s a bit absurd to claim that there is widespread anti-Christian bias,” Taylor said. “When a majority begins to claim persecution, that is often a license for attacks on minorities.”

Just after 8p.m. January 27, sheriff's deputies responded to the Lake Chaparral Community in rural Linn County for a report of two missing 8-year-old boys who had not been seen for several hours, according to Linn County Sheriff James Akes.

Deputies quickly assessed the need for more resources, the Linn County Fire Department responded to the area and assisted in the search for the boys. Searchers found evidence leading them to believe the boys had been around the lake. The Sheriff’s Office utilized an aerial drone to search above the water and the two boys were discovered deceased in the water and trapped under the ice. 

The Overland Park Fire Dive Team was called in for assistance retrieving the two juveniles from the icy water.&nbsp; The sheriff released no additional details early Tuesday.

Republican state legislators are filing a flurry of bills addressing junk food, vaccines, fluoride.

Republican state legislators across the country are filing a flurry of bills to advance the “Make America Healthy Again” agenda promoted by activist lawyer and former presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who’s in line to be the next U.S. health secretary.

Under the MAHA banner, state lawmakers are working to regulate candy and soda purchases under social welfare programs, remove fluoride from public water systems, roll back state vaccination requirements, and remove ultra-processed food from schools.

They’ve&nbsp;<a href="https://www.facebook.com/Leo4AzHouse/posts/pfbid02JfgSgCw6Q2cCBMg6wtZu6BaURnikQMoqnvzDvxEcawMRbGPybnEkQBewqNrXneNnl" target="_blank">enlisted celebrities</a>&nbsp;to help. They’re using&nbsp;<a href="https://x.com/Jacob4Wyoming/status/1886478813804048864" target="_blank">#RFK</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.facebook.com/Leo4AzHouse/posts/pfbid02JfgSgCw6Q2cCBMg6wtZu6BaURnikQMoqnvzDvxEcawMRbGPybnEkQBewqNrXneNnl" target="_blank">#MAHA</a>&nbsp;hashtags on social media to share legislative wins. Lawmakers even&nbsp;<a href="https://www.facebook.com/photo?fbid=983860476948534&amp;set=pb.100059737712851.-2207520000" target="_blank">walked the red carpet</a>&nbsp;at a January gala celebrated as the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.vogue.com/article/the-maha-gala#:~:text=more%20than%20800%20of%20US%20health%20secretary%20nominee%20Robert%20F.%20Kennedy%20Jr.%E2%80%99s%20most%20loyal%20followers%20have%20gathered%20to%20celebrate%20the%20official%20start%20of%20the%20Make%20America%20Healthy%20movement" target="_blank">official start</a>&nbsp;of the MAHA movement in the Trump era.

“It’s pretty exciting for me,” said Wyoming Republican state Rep. Jacob Wasserburger, who has sponsored a MAHA bill in his state.

“I was a pretty overweight kid when I was growing up. … When I was about 16, I started trying to get healthy, and it seemed to me like there were some badly flawed issues with our health care in this country that weren’t being addressed,” he said.

Kennedy is a vocal vaccine skeptic with controversial and sometimes misleading views on a number of public health policies, from fluoride in public water to the underlying causes of HIV and autism. He’s decried ultra-processed foods, government overreach and greedy corporations for harming human health and the environment.

His often unorthodox — and in some cases, false — views have inspired some conservative lawmakers and given political cover to others, spurring them to reshape public health policy in myriad ways.

One popular MAHA measure is to prevent families who qualify for food stamps from using their benefits to purchase candy or soda.

Republican legislators in states including&nbsp;<a href="https://azmirror.com/2025/02/04/republicans-follow-lead-of-rfk-jr-with-effort-to-ban-snap-users-from-buying-soda-candy/?nvep=&amp;hmac=&amp;emci=89624625-bae3-ef11-90cb-0022482a94f4&amp;emdi=ea000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000001&amp;ceid=53701" target="_blank">Arizona</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://legislature.idaho.gov/sessioninfo/2025/legislation/h0109/" target="_blank">Idaho</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://kansasreflector.com/2025/02/05/buying-candy-soda-with-food-stamps-banned-under-proposed-kansas-bill/" target="_blank">Kansas</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.billtrack50.com/billdetail/1821889" target="_blank">Tennessee</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://le.utah.gov/~2025/bills/static/HB0403.html" target="_blank">Utah</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://legiscan.com/WY/bill/HB0323/2025" target="_blank">Wyoming</a>&nbsp;have introduced bills directing their respective state agencies to ask the federal government to allow them to remove candy and soda from the list of eligible products that can be purchased with food stamps, officially known as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. Arkansas Republican Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders&nbsp;<a href="https://governor.arkansas.gov/news_post/governor-sanders-calls-for-reforms-to-the-snap-program/" target="_blank">sent a letter</a>&nbsp;to the feds in December asking them to bar junk food items from SNAP, which is a federal program administered by the states.

In Wyoming, Wasserburger sponsored a bill that would prevent people in SNAP from using their benefits to purchase candy and soda.

“I’m all in favor of people having food choice and freedoms, but if taxpayers are going to be funding the cost of that food with the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, the funding should be going to what it says: nutrition,” Wasserburger told Stateline.

“Taxpayers shouldn’t have to pay for the soda and candy bars. Anybody can go buy that with their own money.”

The bill recently passed the Wyoming House and is headed to the Senate.

Proponents of the SNAP bills argue candy and sugary drinks harm the health of recipients, many of whom are children. And taxpayers, they say, shouldn’t have to pay for unhealthy foods that can lead to obesity and other issues.

State lawmakers embrace RFK Jr.’s health policies

MONTREAL (AP) — Fans in Montreal loudly booed the U.S. national anthem prior to the 4 Nations Face-Off game between the Americans and Canada on Saturday night.

It’s&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/us-anthem-booed-montreal-ef96e50c685285b42bb263b29c62f484">the second time</a>&nbsp;“The Star-Spangled Banner” drew that reaction in two games the United States has played at the NHL-run international tournament.

And it came after public address announcer Michel Lacroix asked the crowd, in French and English, "In the spirit of this great game that unites everyone that you kindly respect the anthems and the players that represent each country."

This time, far more of the fans at Bell Centre booed than Thursday night before the U.S. beat Finland. The booing began when warrant officer David Grenon of the Royal Canadian Air Force Band started singing and lasted the entire length of the song.

“We knew it was going to happen,” U.S. defenseman Zach Werenski said after&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/us-canada-4-nations-score-1aad2277f10e7ec0797b0f61051fffbf?cache">beating Canada 3-1</a>&nbsp;and quieting the crowd of over 21,000. “It happened the last game, it’s been happening in the NHL before this and we knew tonight was going to be the same way. We obviously don’t like it."

U.S. players have been trying to tune it out. After&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/us-finland-4-nations-score-c5e9588611bcb1f75e41957e852fe90f">beating Finland 6-1</a>&nbsp;on Thursday, goaltender Connor Hellebuyck said he “paid no attention to” the booing.

“You have free speech,” Hellebuyck said. "You can do whatever you want. If you’re going to boo the anthem, we sing it for the troops that protected our freedom. That doesn’t really mean anything to me. You can do whatever you want. But I don’t use it at all.”

Werenski said it provided some fuel with the U.S. serving in the villain role in Canada.

“It is what it is,” Werenski said. "We kind of had an idea. We used it as motivation the best we could and found a way to get a win. But we had an idea going into it, so it wasn’t a surprise. Definitely don’t like it, though.”

U.S. forward Matthew Tkachuk, who fought Canada's Brandon Hagel off the opening faceoff, setting off a series of three bouts in nine seconds, said it had nothing to do with the anthem booing. If anything, players felt it added to the fun of the night.

“It’s just unbelievable, the atmosphere, to play on this stage in Canada, that was pretty cool for all of us I think,” said winger Jake Guentzel, who scored twice, including the empty-netter that sealed it. “There’s a lot of excitement from our team coming out for warmups and just seeing how packed it was. That was pretty special.”

Fans across Canada have&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/fans-boo-national-anthem-tariffs-canada-2c7210574c0373348870a94445814407">booed the U.S. anthem at NHL and NBA games</a>&nbsp;since President Donald Trump began making repeated references to the country&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/how-canada-could-become-us-state-42360e10ded96c0046fd11eaaf55ab88">becoming “the 51st state.”</a>&nbsp;Trump also&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-tariffs-trade-china-mexico-canada-inflation-753a09d56cd318f2eb1d2efe3c43b7d4">threatened tariffs</a>&nbsp;against the country, prompting backlash from a close neighbor and longtime ally.

Asked Friday at practice about fans booing the U.S. anthem, veteran Canada defenseman Drew Doughty voiced opposition to it.

“Obviously, I know what’s going on, and I understand the Canadians’ frustration, but I think we should respect the anthems and stuff like that,” Doughty said. "I don’t think anyone should be booing.”

SEDGWICK COUNTY— A Kansas man is going to prison for a deadly knife attack, robbery.

On Wednesday Judge Jeff Goering sentenced 36-year-old Antonio Jones&nbsp; to 442-months in prison and another 59 months for robbery, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office. The judge also order Jones to serve 36-months of post release supervision and pay restitution of $5,700 to the Kansas Crime Victims Compensation Board.

In December, Jones plead guilty to second degree murder and&nbsp; and aggravated robbery.

Just after 3p.m. Sept. 6, 2023, police were dispatched to the 2300 block of N. Chautauqua in Wichita for a welfare check&nbsp; on 66-year-old Brenda McNeely, according to Officer Kris Gupilan.

&nbsp;Officers received information that she could be inside the residence and possibly injured and in need of help. The door to the residence was forced open and officers located with her a fatal stab wound inside of the residence. She was pronounced deceased on the scene.

The preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect identified as <a href="https://ssc.sedgwickcounty.org/InmateSearch/Details.aspx?Id=350241">&nbsp;Antonio Jones</a>&nbsp;was involved in a disturbance with McNeely which ultimately led to her stabbing.

SHAWNEE COUNTY – A man is recovering in the hospital following a shooting in Topeka and police have made an arrest.

Just before 10:30 a.m. Feb. 11, police responded to a reported shooting near SE 2nd Street and Golden Avenue, according to Police Lt. Ronnie Connell.&nbsp;

First responders located a man who had reportedly been shot by someone who is known to him. American Medical Response (AMR) and the Topeka Fire Department (TFD) responded to provide medical care, and the individual was transported to a local hospital to be treated for life-threatening injuries.&nbsp;

Shortly after, officers located a vehicle believed to belong to the suspect in the 300 block of SE Lime Street.

While officers attempted to make contact with the suspect, no one was located at the address.

On Thursday, police reported the arrest of Robert Bennett, 27, of Topeka. He is being held in the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on requested charges of Aggravated Battery and Aggravated Assault.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A renewed and expanded effort from chemical giant Bayer to shield itself from lawsuits that claim its popular weedkiller Roundup causes cancer brought dozens of protesters to the Iowa Capitol building Monday begging lawmakers to reject it.

The legislation, pending in Iowa and at least seven other states, would protect pesticide companies from claims they failed to warn that their product causes cancer if the product label otherwise complies with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s regulations.

Similar efforts failed during 2024 legislative sessions in Iowa, Missouri and Idaho. But this year,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/bayer-legislation-glyphosate-roundup-lawsuits-cancer-warning-4fa2e6662479f3e60a409ce4439a40ed">Bayer and a coalition of agricultural groups</a>&nbsp;are doubling down. A broader media campaign is highlighting the importance of glyphosate-based Roundup for American agriculture. And they are getting help from a group that ran a Super Bowl ad in Missouri asserting the legislation is necessary to combat Chinese influence over the U.S. food supply.

Opponents, including those who rallied Monday in Des Moines, say the bills would limit the rights of people to hold companies accountable if their products cause harm. Speakers took turns telling stories of family members throughout the state who have been diagnosed with cancers and shouted out to lawmakers that Iowa's people are more important than corporate profits.

“I feel like we need accountability here in Iowa,” said Nick Schutt, a part-time farmer whose mother, father, aunt and two siblings have all had cancer diagnoses. “At the end of the day, multinational chemical companies like Bayer should be held accountable."

Bayer disputes the claims that Roundup causes cancer, but&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/weed-killer-roundup-philadelphia-verdict-cancer-6c777d7fd4e7c38ec8fe28a6f1566d24">the company has been hit</a>&nbsp;with about 177,000 lawsuits involving the weedkiller and has set aside $16 billion to settle cases. It contends those legal costs are “not sustainable” and is looking for relief from lawmakers concerned about the possibility that Roundup could be pulled from the U.S. market.

For crops including corn, soybeans and cotton, Roundup is designed to work with genetically modified seeds that resist the weedkiller’s deadly effect. It allows farmers to produce more crops while conserving the soil by tilling it less.

“It is the most important product in global agriculture,” Liza Lockwood, Bayer's medical affairs lead in its crop science division, said during a recent Missouri Senate committee hearing.

Some farmers have echoed that assertion. If lawsuits force Roundup off the U.S. market, they contend that Chinese-made products may be the only alternative.

“Losing access to this one safe and effective tool will set off a domino effect that will threaten family farmers and our state’s economy,” Kevin Ross, a farmer from southwest Iowa, said to Iowa lawmakers. Ross detailed how, for 50 years, the American-made product has increased soil quality, decreased water runoff and helped struggling farmers turn a profit.

Last year, Bayer focused its lobbying efforts on Missouri, Iowa and Idaho — home, respectively, to its North America crop science division, a Roundup manufacturing facility and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/idaho-phosphate-mine-bayer-roundup-1d15250044d8894f347f3094c20c2c66">the phosphate mines</a>&nbsp;from which its key ingredient is derived. Though bills passed at least one chamber in Iowa and Missouri, they ultimately&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/bayer-roundup-pesticide-cancer-lawsuits-35a9e6d8773b5145c920d919a28fdb83">failed in all three states</a>.

This year, legislation providing legal protection against failure-to-warn claims already has passed the North Dakota House without any opposition. Similar bills have cleared initial committees in Iowa, Mississippi and Missouri and are pending in legislative committees in Florida, Oklahoma and Tennessee. A bill failed to get out of a Wyoming committee by a deadline.

Bayer officials said Monday that legislative efforts also are in the works in Georgia, Idaho and the U.S. Congress. A promotional campaign from the Modern Ag Alliance, a coalition that Bayer supports, has targeted an even wider array of states.

New to the cause this year is the Protecting America Initiative, an organization concerned about China’s influence on the U.S. economy and tied to&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/richard-grenell-secretary-of-state-trump-5e7410edd659870307a5eba762f8136c">Richard Grenell</a>, President Donald Trump’s envoy for special missions and former acting director of national intelligence. The group ran a television ad Sunday in central Missouri during the Super Bowl urging support for the legislation. It said it has invested six figures to run the 30-second spot more broadly across Missouri and Iowa.

It also parked a truck containing a portable billboard outside the Iowa Capitol on Monday, encouraging support of the bill to stop Chinese-made chemicals from “infiltrating American farms.”

Ads supporting legislation that could limit Bayer's legal liability have emphasized the importance of its weed-control products to agriculture.

"Farming’s hard,” one Facebook advertisement says. “But it’s a little easier with glyphosate.”

That ad offended Kim Hagemann, a suburban Des Moines resident who showed up to a crowded subcommittee meeting to share her opposition with lawmakers.

“Bayer is right, farming’s hard, but dealing with cancer is even harder,” said Hagemann, a member of one of the groups that organized Monday's protest.

Though some studies associate Roundup's key ingredient glyphosate with cancer, the EPA has said it is not likely to be carcinogenic to humans when used as directed. Yet the numerous lawsuits against Bayer allege glyphosate does cause a cancer called non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

One of the many attorneys involved in the lawsuits against Bayer is&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/robert-f-kennedy-jr">Robert F. Kennedy Jr</a>., Trump’s nominee to serve as secretary of Health and Human Services. Though the health agency oversees the Food and Drug Administration, it does not control the EPA and its labeling requirements.

The legislation supported by Bayer would provide a defense against failure-to-warn claims not only for Roundup but for other pesticide products that follow EPA labeling guidelines.

Richard Deming, a cancer physician in Des Moines, said it often takes decades to determine a cause-and-effect connection between cancer and long-term exposure to low levels of chemicals. He said public policy should focus on mitigating that risk, not providing “immunity from responsibility.”

“I don’t think that ag chemicals causes as much cancer as cigarette smoking," Deming told the AP after speaking to lawmakers. But studies suggest "there’s clear association between ag chemical exposure in the state of Iowa and cancer incidence.”

TOPEKA — The chair of the House Elections Committee told Republicans in a private Zoom meeting last year that he would prefer to eliminate advanced voting altogether and vowed to ram through legislation in the 2025 session to eliminate the three-day grace period for mail-in ballots to arrive after Election Day.

The comments by Rep. Pat Proctor, a Leavenworth Republican, were part of a weekly Zoom call organized by House Majority Leader Chris Croft with Johnson County Republicans and invite-only guests. Loud Light Civic Action, a voting rights advocacy group, released a video of the February 2024 Zoom meeting after receiving it this week from an anonymous source. During meeting, Proctor identified Loud Light and Kansas Appleseed as “bomb throwers.”

The video surfaced after Proctor’s committee on Thursday advanced&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kslegislature.gov/li/b2025_26/measures/sb4/" target="_blank">Senate Bill 4</a>, which would require mail-in ballots be received at the election office by 7 p.m. on Election Day. Current law allows ballots postmarked by Election Day to be counted if they are received by Friday.

Last year, Proctor&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kslegislature.gov/li_2024/b2023_24/measures/sb14/" target="_blank">proposed legislation</a>&nbsp;that would balance the elimination of the three-day grace period by adding three days to the early voting period. But his supposed compromise also would have moved back the voter registration deadline by three days. Loud Light, Kansas Appleseed and other organizations opposed the changes, and the package didn’t have enough support for the Legislature to become law.

But his supposed compromise also would have moved back the voter registration deadline by three days. Loud Light, Kansas Appleseed and other organizations opposed the changes, and the package didn’t have enough support for the Legislature to become law.As the proposal was being debated last year, Proctor joined Croft’s weekly call to talk about election laws. Proctor told the group of about 30 participants that he had tried to compromise in an attempt to get enough support to override a potential veto from the governor.“The only way we’re going to get it passed is if we get bipartisan support on it,” Proctor said. “And so I had a deal, and then Loud Light and Appleseed, which are the kind of bomb throwers in the election debate, they blew it up. And I told all of them — and you know, please don’t put this on Facebook or in the news — I told them all, this is your year for a deal. You can either negotiate and we can get a deal, or next year I’m ramming the thing through the way I want it to look.”“If it was up to me, Election Day would be Election Day,” Proctor added. “There wouldn’t be early voting. Mail-in ballots would only be for military or severely disabled. But I got to bring 84 people with me, so I’m trying to chip away at it.”This year’s proposal, which was introduced by Sen. Mike Thompson, a Shawnee Republican, would end the three-day grace period for mail-in ballots without making any other changes. The Senate passed the bill on a 29-10 vote, with Topeka Republican Sen. Brenda Dietrich joining Democrats in opposition.A statement from Loud Light said Proctor’s comments from a year ago show he is being disingenuous now with his public explanation for eliminating the three-day grace period. Proctor, who didn’t respond to an email seeking comment for this story, said he wants to avoid ballots being dismissed because of problems with the postmark.According to&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kslegislature.gov/li/b2025_26/committees/ctte_h_electns_1/misc_documents/download_testimony/ctte_h_electns_1_20250211_11_testimony.html" target="_blank">testimony the Kansas Secretary of State’s Office provided to Proctor’s committee</a>, 2,110 ballots were received after Election Day last November and counted. There were 603 ballots received after the grace period, and 104 ballots arrived after Election Day with no postmark.“Proctor’s secret meeting shows how some politicians would rather disenfranchise voters than try to win their vote,” said Davis Hammet, president of Loud Light. “Politicians love to play games, but our ability to vote and have our vote counted, our democracy, cannot be treated like a game. Rep. Proctor’s comments are disturbing.”Mike Fonkert, deputy director of Kansas Appleseed, said the organization supports policies that both make voting easy and secure elections.The state and nation have a long history of allowing individuals to vote by mail, Fonkert said.“It is reasonable to allow extra time for ballots to arrive, especially as Kansans continue to encounter more frequent issues with mail delivery interruption across this state,” Fonkert said. “Casting us as ‘bomb throwers’ is dismissive of the important work that we do to protect the rights of Kansas to participate in elections.”
