HUTCHINSON, Kan. —The defending NBC World Series champion Hutchinson Monarchs will host the Haysville Aviators at&nbsp; Hobart-Detter Field in Carey Park Monday night with the first pitch scheduled for 7 p.m.

Prior to the Monarchs vs Aviators game, come out at 5:15pm to watch the Vintage Hutchinson Baseball Club show how it was done back in the 1860's or before as they put on a two-inning exhibition. First pitch around 5:15 or 5:30pm.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Tony Vitello jumped into the stands to share a group hug with the legion of Tennessee fans who invaded Omaha. His players ran a lap around the warning track high-fiving them. Kavares Tears squatted in right field taking in the moment with a towel over his eyes.

Tennessee at long last won its first national championship in baseball.

Christian Moore hit a leadoff homer, Dylan Dreiling went deep for the third time in three games and Tennessee survived anxious moments late to take the title with a 6-5 victory over Texas A&amp;M on Monday night in Game 3 of the College World Series finals.

The Volunteers bounced back from a Game 1 loss to win two straight and become the first No. 1 national seed in the NCAA Tournament to win the title since Miami in 1999.

“Kids are tough these days. They will do what you ask them to do,” said Vitello, the Vols’ seventh-year coach. “I know our fans got us through that tough inning. That was a group effort on the mound. If you’re in the SEC, you’re going to be a superstar player, but you need to be a good teammate, and that’s what these guys were.”

Tennessee (60-13) held an Aggies team averaging 8.5 runs per game for the season to six runs over the last 20 innings of the finals, with Zander Sechrist and Nate Snead doing the heavy lifting on Monday before Texas A&amp;M came back to score four runs and get the tying run at the plate in the ninth.

Aaron Combs struck out Hayden Schott and Ted Burton to end the game and set off a Tennessee celebration behind the pitcher’s mound.

Tennessee had made runs at the title before. The Vols reached the CWS in 2021 and went 0-2. The next year they were the No. 1 national seed and lost at home in a three-game super regional. They were back in Omaha last year and won a game. And they slugged their way back again this year, making it to the finals for the first time since the 1951 team lost to Oklahoma in the championship game.

Minutes after the final pitch, the 45-year-old Vitello shared an embrace with his father, Greg, a longtime state champion high school baseball and soccer coach in St. Louis.

“I felt like I was the dad and he was the kid because he wouldn’t stop crying,” Vitello said. “I had to rub some dirt on him.”

The Vols are the eighth Southeastern Conference school to win a national title in baseball. Those eight have combined for 16 titles. The SEC has won five in a row, all by different schools, and 10 of the last 15.

Texas A&amp;M threatened to cut into a 3-1 deficit in the sixth and seventh innings, but Snead got the Vols out of trouble both times.

Dreiling, the CWS Most Outstanding Player, connected for his 23rd homer of the season and Hunter Ensley evaded Jackson Appel’s tag at the plate as he scored on Tears’ double to make it 6-1 going to the eighth. Since the CWS best-of-three finals began in 2003, Dreiling is the only player to homer in three games.

“I kind of blacked out again in the moment,” Dreiling said. “I know first pitch I overswung on a heater way up. I told myself just see the ball deep and put a good swing on something. He gave me a changeup over the middle. I tried to stay back and put a good swing on it.”

The Vols’ two homers Monday moved them into a tie with the 1998 LSU team for most in an NCAA Tournament (37) and gave them 184 for the season, four behind the 1997 LSU team’s NCAA record of 188.

Texas A&amp;M created some anxiety for the Vols in the eighth, scoring twice and threatening to get more with two runners on base with one out. Kirby Connell got two strikes, pumped his left fist twice coming off the mound, gave a primal scream and skipped over the third-base line on his way back to the dugout.

The Aggies scored twice in the ninth, the second run coming home on a wild pitch, to make it a one-run game before Combs finished it off.

“Tough one to swallow,” Aggies coach Jim Schlossnagle said. “You make it this far, you want to win your last game.”

Among the fans on hand in Tennessee orange were football great Peyton Manning, football coach Josh Heupel, men’s basketball coach Rick Barnes and country music artist Morgan Wallen. Temperature at first pitch was a humid 98 degrees.

Moore took Tennessee fans’ minds off the heat, at least for a moment, when he drove Justin Lamkin’s fourth pitch, an elevated fastball, off the back wall of the left-field bullpen for his team-leading 34th homer of the season.

The Aggies overcame late-season injuries, including one to star outfielder Braden Montgomery, to reach their first CWS finals. Their 53 wins were their most since 1993.

“I think Texas A&amp;M is a place that should be competing in the SEC. Should be competing to host regionals. And everybody thinks that Omaha is a right. It’s not,” Schlossnagle said. “You have to earn your way there and have you to play well in the NCAA Tournament.”

⚾ Kan. native Most Outstanding Player as Tennessee wins national title

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) —&nbsp;Cole Ragans&nbsp;struck out 11 for his first win in a month, and the&nbsp;Kansas City Royals&nbsp;beat the&nbsp;Miami Marlins&nbsp;4-1 on Monday night for just their fourth win in 15 games.

Vinnie Pasquantino,&nbsp;Salvador Perez&nbsp;and&nbsp;Hunter Renfroe&nbsp;hit solo homers off Roddery Muñoz (1-3), who has allowed six home runs in his last 10 innings.

Ragans (5-5) allowed one run, four hits and three walks in six innings. He had been 0-2 in five starts since beating Detroit on May 22.

“Change up was good,” Ragans said. “Got some good swing-and-miss on it, got some pop ups with it. Overall, I commanded it pretty well.”

“When he can get ahead and attack, that’s when you see a lot of swing-and-miss,” Royals interim manager Paul Hoover said. “A team that hasn’t seen him and he’s executing four different pitches for strikes. That’s tough on any lineup.”

Kansas City pitchers struck out a season-high 15.

Chris Stratton,&nbsp;John Schreiber&nbsp;and&nbsp;James McArthur&nbsp;each followed with a hitless inning as the Marlins were held to four hits or fewest for the 12th time.

McArthur got his 13th save in 17 chances as the Royals stopped a three-game losing streak.

“It’s tough to win when you score one run,” Marlins manager Skip Schumaker said. “I thought we had a chance in a couple of innings there. Just couldn’t get the big hit. Ragans is the story tonight. Just kept us off-balance all night.”

Bryan De La Cruz&nbsp;had a two-out RBI double in the third.

“My sinker was a little difficult to locate tonight,” Muñoz said. “There were some pitches that were not exactly what I wanted. I was trying to attack, be very aggressive. They were competing and they won in that situation.”

Muñoz gave up four runs, six hits and four walks in six innings.

“The problem is command catches up with him,” Schumaker said. “Putting himself in better situations, count-wise, is going to be the key to his development.”

Pasquantino led off the fourth with his eighth home run&nbsp;and&nbsp;Perez followed with his 12th on the next pitch, ending an 0-for-17 slump with the Royals’ first consecutive home runs since March 31. Kansas City, which entered with a 25-inning scoreless streak, also got Kyle Isbel’s two-out RBI single in the three-run inning.

“It wasn’t fun, but there was no panic,” Pasquantino said of the offensive slump. “What do we need to do to rectify that? Tonight was a nice step in that direction.”

Renfroe hit a 434-foot drive in the sixth&nbsp;for his seventh homer.

“It’s been a while,” Renfroe said. “It’s been a rough 10 days. Just to be able to hit a ball solid and get back into the groove of things is pretty fantastic.”

Michael Massey&nbsp;returned from a sprained lower back that had sidelined him since May 24 and was 1 for 3 as a designated hitter.

CJ Alexander, a 27-year-old who had been in the minor leagues since 2018, made his major league debut at third base for the Royals and went 0 for 3 with a strikeout.

Kansas City selected Alexander’s contract from Omaha, optioned outfielder Nelson Velázquez to the Triple-A team and designed left-hander Jake Brentz for assignment.

Otto López had two hits for the Marlins, who are 6-14 in June.

⚾ Royals win Monday over Marlins

HUTCHINSON, Kan. - The Hutchinson Monarchs got big innings in both the bottom of the first inning and the seventh inning including two long home runs each by Jaden Gustafson and Nicky Sackett. Gustafson's was a 1 run shot while Sackett was a 2 run blast.

Strong pitching by Cade Toureau who went five strong innings with the start and win. Toureau had five strikeouts in those five innings he pitched.

Carson Cornelius and Reed Scott came on in relief and locked things down for the Monarchs each pitching two innings apiece.

Next action for the 11-5 Monarchs will be Tuesday night versus the Haysville Aviators with first pitch at 7pm.

⚾ Hutch Monarchs use big innings and long ball to win over Bat Cats

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Three future Hutchinson Community College football players will play one final game representing their high schools, as the 51st annual Kansas Shrine Bowl Game will kickoff on Saturday.

The game will begin at 7 p.m. at Welch Stadium on the campus of Emporia State University.&nbsp;

DaeOnte' "Paco" Mitchell (Wichita East) and Blaise Hoover (McPherson) will each represent the West Team, while Kaleb Scott (Basehor-Linwood) will be on the East Team. Mitchell will wear jersey number&nbsp;

Mitchell will go down as one of the best to ever play in the Greater Wichita Athletic League. He finished his prep career at East as the all-time passing yards leader (7,848) and the all-time total yards leader (11,168). The dual-threat quarterback also etched his name in the Kansas Sports Hall of Fame record book for his strong senior campaign. Mitchell holds the 11-man single season passing completion percentage (82.4), and also is now the 11-man career passing completion percentage (77.6) holder.

Hoover finished up his time at McPherson High School with a bang, claiming the individual class 4A state golf title in the spring. Hoover finished off his round with a Birdie and an Eagle to claim the title by two shots. Hoover was also a big part of the Bullpups' success on the gridiron, both as a kicker and a wide receiver. Hoover racked up the all-league honors for football, as he was named the Offensive Player of the Year, plus First-Team at receiver, kicker and punter.

Scott was an explosive playmaker for the Basehor-Linwood Bobcats, on all three sides of the football. Scott returned three kickoffs for touchdowns this past fall, plus had over 800 receiving yards and eight touchdowns. Scott had over 1400 all-purpose yards, the most on the team. He was named to the United Kansas Conference First-Team at defensive back.

Other area student-athletes that will be participating in the game on Saturday include Teegan Haines (McPherson), Tristen Davidson (Kingman), Mason Jones (Hutchinson), and Nick Ruth (Newton).

McPherson head coach Jace Pavlovich will serve as the head coach for the West Team.

He finished his prep career at East as the all-time passing yards leader (7,848) and the all-time total yards leader (11,168). The dual-threat quarterback also etched his name in the Kansas Sports Hall of Fame record book for his strong senior campaign. Mitchell holds the 11-man single season passing completion percentage (82.4), and also is now the 11-man career passing completion percentage (77.6) holder.Hoover finished up his time at McPherson High School with a bang, claiming the individual class 4A state golf title in the spring. Hoover finished off his round with a Birdie and an Eagle to claim the title by two shots. Hoover was also a big part of the Bullpups' success on the gridiron, both as a kicker and a wide receiver. Hoover racked up the all-league honors for football, as he was named the Offensive Player of the Year, plus First-Team at receiver, kicker and punter.Scott was an explosive playmaker for the Basehor-Linwood Bobcats, on all three sides of the football. Scott returned three kickoffs for touchdowns this past fall, plus had over 800 receiving yards and eight touchdowns. Scott had over 1400 all-purpose yards, the most on the team. KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas City Chiefs have released defensive lineman Isaiah Buggs, according to&nbsp;NFL Network Insider Tom Pelissero.

Buggs was arrested on a domestic violence/burglary charge and booked into Tuscaloosa County (Ala.) Jail last week. According to reports, he is still in jail.&nbsp;

He had previously been arrested in May for misdemeanor animal cruelty charges.&nbsp;

HESSTON - Gunnar Lewis knew he wasn’t a DI baseball prospect coming out of Hesston High.

“I’m blessed, it hits you early in high school that you won’t be a DI out of high school kinda guy,” the recent Swather graduate said. “So I looked in to juco options early and Butler was always my favorite. I’m grateful and excited for this opportunity.”

The all-time hits leader at Hesston chose Butler this spring.

“My goal is to have two great years and find a home at a DI spot or a great DII,” Lewis said.

The Hesston middle infielder describes himself as quick and athletic.

“With a little power can hit a lot of doubles and have a couple leave the yard here and there,” he said. “Fast runner, aggressive on the bases and stretch singles to doubles and doubles to triples.”

He ripped a program-high 112 hits in his career.

“It means a lot to me,” Lewis said of the record. “Speaks volumes to being a consistent starter. I had a hit streak up to 29 games. Hesston is a young program and I’m excited to see who breaks the record.”

“Passionate, attention to detail, fierce, willing and wanting to win, big time,” Gunner Goalden said of Lewis.

Lewis batted .450 his senior season with 11 doubles, three triples and one home run. He started every varsity game in his career except for two because of covid. Lewis ended with a .400 career batting average with 23 doubles, 11 triples and three homers.

“I would describe Gunnar Lewis as a great teammate,” Keldon Lange said. “He motivated me to work hard in practice when we would do running or a team competition. He would make sure to be the one leading and to encourage his teammates a lot. He’s a great person, too.”

“I’ve always worked to better my craft,” Lewis said. “I’ve had a great hitting coach the last couple years who has really carried me to where I am today. Staying motivated and trying to love the journey instead of always thinking about the destination.”

“Gunnar always makes the game fun and loose on the field and in the dugout,” summer league teammate Logan Renken of Little River said. “One of the best gap to gap hitters I have played with and he just seems to never get out. He is never tight or pressed about a situation and I think he is going to do big things at the next level.”

His Swather teammates mentioned Lewis and the positivity he maintained.

“He’s a great person to his teammates and he helped us out so that we would succeed and achieve new things,” Lange said. “In JV he helped a lot of us work on things to get to the varsity level also so I would describe him as a great player.”

“Gunnar is and always has been a great leader. Whenever something goes wrong instead of being negative he always stays positive and encourages everyone to keep working hard,” Josh Koehn said.

“Gunnar since freshman year has always been one of our main guys to lead the team,” Layne Clark said. “His passion for the game always helped fuel the energy in the dugout and on the field.”

Lewis said the middle school self would be a little surprised how he’s turned out.&nbsp;

“High school me grew a lot and got a lot bigger. The height and weight difference from eighth grade to my senior year is about 10 inches and around 75 pounds,” said the current 6-foot, 180-pound Lewis. “I switched from second base to shortstop my sophomore year because of how much stronger my arm got. And I finally found power in my bat in high school which I never had.”

“He’s a hard working teammate who puts his body on the line for the team and is also a great friend,” summer teammate Sam Soderstrom said.

“He makes all the plays you need an infielder to make and can range both ways to give you a show at third,” Renken said.

His Swathers reached the state tournament twice in Lewis’ four years.

“I had always dreamed of winning a state championship but unfortunately it never happened,” Lewis said. “Individually I received all league honors three times and was second team all state this last season. I am very grateful to have received these awards.”

“He was a good high school player because he was a leader,” Goalden noted. “And he wanted to make him and his team better everyday.”

“He could become a great and amazing player in college if he decides to do the right thing at all times,” Lange said. “He would get along with a lot of people and be an amazing player.”

Lewis hopes his legacy has been established for future Swather stars to follow.

“It being a young program I just want to be a good first step in things to come,” Lewis said. “A lot of middle schoolers and younger kids came to games and I hope some of those diving plays or great hits I may have had made them interested in baseball and I hope they can keep the Hesston Baseball Program respectable.”

NEW YORK (AP) — Toronto Blue Jays infielder Orelvis Martínez has been suspended for 80 games by Major League Baseball following a positive test for the performance-enhancing drug Clomiphene. The announcement comes two days after the 22-year-old Martínez made his major league debut. He issued a statement Sunday apologizing to the Blue Jays and their fans and saying he and his girlfriend were trying to start a family, so he visited a fertility clinic in the Dominican Republic where he was prescribed treatment that included a banned substance. Martínez has been on the Blue Jays’ 40-man roster since November 2022. He went 1 for 3 with a strikeout on Friday at Cleveland.

CHICAGO (AP) — New York Mets closer Edwin Díaz is facing a 10-game suspension after being ejected from the team’s 5-2 win over the Chicago Cubs. SAMAMMISH, Wash. (AP) — Amy Yang built a huge lead and survived a couple of late mistakes to win her long-awaited first major title, a three-shot victory in the KMPG Women’s PGA Championship. Yang closed with an even-par 72 at Sahalee to finish at 7-under 281. She was nearly flawless for the first 15 holes and reached 10 under for the tournament for a seven-shot lead before running into a little bit of trouble. But none of her pursuers was able to mount a significant charge. At age 34, Yang is the oldest major winner on the LPGA Tour since Angela Stanford won the 2018 Evian Championship at age 40.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Simone Manuel has earned an individual race at the Olympics on the final night of the U.S. swimming trials, winning the 50-meter freestyle. Coming back from overtraining syndrome, which hampered her preparations leading up to the Tokyo Games, Manuel won the frantic dash in 24.13 seconds. Gretchen Walsh took the second spot. In the final race of the nine-day trials in Indianapolis, Bobby Finke blew away the field in the 1,500 free. He'll head to the Olympics looking to defend the gold medals he won in the 800 and 1,500 freestyle at Tokyo. The real race was for the last spot on the Olympic team. David Johnston edged Luke Whitlock by only 26-hundredths of a second after nearly 15 minutes of racing.

DINWIDDIE, Va. (AP) — NHRA great John Force was alert and talking to safety workers immediately after a fiery, 300-mph crash Sunday in the Virginia Nationals at Virginia Motorsports Park. John Force Racing said the 75-year-old Force was examined at the track by the NHRA Medical Team before being transported by medical helicopter to a facility for further evaluation. During the first round of Funny Car eliminations, the engine exploded Force’s car at the finish line, with the vehicle going across the centerline and striking the left concrete guard wall, then careening back across into the right wall. Three weeks ago in New Hampshire, Force raced to his record 157th NHRA victory and second of the season.

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Three-time Cy Young Award winner Max Scherzer retired 15 of the 16 batters he faced over five scoreless innings in his season debut, rookie Wyatt Langford extended his RBI streak to five games and the Texas Rangers beat the Kansas City Royals 4-0 on Sunday to complete a three-game series sweep.

“It was just fun to get back out there and compete,” said Scherzer, who retired the first 13 Royals in his first start for Texas since Game 3 of last fall's World Series.

José Ureña went the final four innings for his first save and extended the Rangers' consecutive scoreless innings pitched streak to a season-high 22, their longest since 23 in September 2016. Ureña and and Scherzer combined to throw 99 pitches in the team's seventh shutout this season, and second time in back-to-back games.

Josh Smith homered for the Rangers (37-40), who matched their season high by winning their fourth game in a row. It was the first three-game sweep of the season for the reigning World Series champions.

The Royals ended a 2-7 road trip, though at 42-37 overall, they have 20 wins more than at the same point last season. They were shut out for the fourth time this season, three on the trip that ended with being held scoreless the last two games in Texas.

Kansas City manager Matt Quatraro missed the series finale to tend to a personal manner, so bench coach Paul Hoover managed the game.

Texas went ahead for good on Langford's RBI double in the fourth off Alec Marsh (5-5). Langford had a grand slam in Saturday's 6-0 win and has 10 RBI in the last five games. Leody Taveras was 5 for 58 in June before his bloop two-run single later in the fourth, and Smith homered leading off the seventh.

Scherzer (1-0) struck out four while allowing only one hit and no walks. The right-hander threw 39 of his 57 pitches for strikes in his first start since exiting that World Series game on Oct. 30 after three innings because of back tightness. He left after five innings Sunday following a dugout conversation with manager Bruce Bochy and pitching coach Mike Maddux.

“Everything from a baseball standpoint was telling me to go back out there. You know, I’m pitching well, I’m throwing the ball well,” Scherzer said. “I just don’t know how I’m going to recover from this. ... I was feeling my forearm kind of fatigued.”

The 39-year-old Scherzer, who turns 40 on July 27, had surgery in mid-December to repair a herniated disk in his lower back. Then during his rehab he dealt with a nerve issue that was diagnosed and is still bothering him after he experienced right thumb soreness.

MJ Melendez was the only Royal to reach base against Scherzer, with a ground-rule double in the fifth.

“He just competes,” Hoover said of Scherzer. “He keeps the hitters off balance, will attack early but then nibble late. He's been doing it for a long time, and he showed that today.”

Scherzer's fourth and final strikeout was the 3,371st in his career to match Hall of Fame pitcher Greg Maddux for 11th on MLB’s career list. Maddux, a four-time Cy Young winner, is the brother of the Texas pitching coach.

OMAHA, Neb. –&nbsp;No.&nbsp; 1 Tennessee used a stellar performance from its pitching staff and scored four late runs to earn a hard-fought 4-1 win over No. 3 Texas A&amp;M on Sunday afternoon at Charles Schwab Field, forcing a winner-take-all game three on Monday night that will decide the 2024 national champion.

The Volunteers handed the Aggies (53-14) their first loss of the NCAA Tournament as they were on a nine-game winning streak that started after their 7-4 loss to UT in the SEC Tournament back on May 23.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Volunteers entered the seventh inning trailing 1-0 despite having at least one runner reach base in five of the first six innings. UT was finally able to break through in the seventh when Dylan Dreiling launched a 1-1 pitch over the bullpen in right field for a two-run homer to give the Vols a 2-1 lead.

Through the Vols' five Men's College World Series games, Dreiling leads the team with a .500 batting average (11-for-22), two home runs and eight RBIs.

Cal Stark&nbsp;followed Dreiling's lead with a two-run, two-out blast of his own in the top of the eighth inning to add some insurance.

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Jon Gray allowed two hits over five innings to rebound from his worst major league start and Wyatt Langford hit an eighth-inning grand slam that led the Texas Rangers over the Kansas City Royals 6-0 on Saturday.

Gray (3-3) gave up back-to-back third-inning singles while throwing 51 of 72 pitches for strikes. He gave nine earned runs and 11 hits in three innings-plus last Monday in a 14-2 loss to the New York Mets.

“Terrific job. Good stuff,” Rangers manager Bruce Bochy said of Gray. “It’s good to see him back on track.”

KINGMAN, Kan.-The Hutch Monarchs bounced back into the win column by snapping a two-game skit to blast the Kingman Islanders Saturday night in Kingman 15-2.

DJ Merriweather led the Monarchs going three for four and knocking in four runs in the seven inning game. Blake Bradford was not far behind also going one for four but produced three RBI's.

For the game, Hutchinson pounded out 11 hits with only one error in the contest.

Jace Minor gets the win for the Monarchs who are now 9-5 overall. Kingman falls to 6-8.

The same two teams play Sunday night in Kingman with first pitch set for 6pm.
