The 36-year-old says he wanted to walk away from football while his body was still healthy enough for him to pursue business and television opportunities. The tight end played for San Francisco, Denver and Washington and won the Super Bowl with the Broncos during the 2015 season. Davis caught 583 passes for 7,562 yards and 63 touchdowns during his pro career. He missed a majority of the 2019 season because of a concussion.

ALLEN PARK, Mich. (AP) — The Detroit Lions signed free agent guard Josh Garnett, a former first-round draft pick of the San Francisco 49ers. The Lions did not disclose contract terms. Garnett was the 28th pick in the 2016 draft out of Stanford. He spent three seasons with the 49ers before being released before the start of this season. Garnett has appeared in 22 career games, with 11 starts. All of those starts came in his rookie season. Garnett missed the whole 2017 season because of a knee injury. He played in seven games in 2018.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Police say Philadelphia Flyers mascot Gritty has been cleared of allegations that he punched a 13-year-old boy after a photo shoot. Chris Greenwell and his son Brandon met the hairy, googly-eyed mascot at a November event for season ticket holders. Greenwell has said that as Brandon walked away from the mascot, the person in the Gritty costume ran from his chair and “punched my son as hard as he could."

MOSCOW (AP) — The entire board of the Russian Athletics Federation has resigned as Russia faces another ban from Olympic track events and possible expulsion from World Athletics. The federation says the entire board stepped down after a meeting with the new Russian sports minister. The federation has been suspended by World Athletics since 2015 because of widespread doping.

MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;– Kansas State fought back from a 16-point first-half deficit to close to within one possession of No. 1/1 Baylor, but the top-ranked Bears showed why they have won a school-record 19 consecutive games with a 73-67 victory over the Wildcats on Monday night before 8,888 fans at Bramlage Coliseum.

With the win, Baylor (20-1, 9-0 Big 12) snapped a 6-game losing streak to K-State (9-13, 2-7 Big 12) and earned its first win at Bramlage Coliseum since the Bears were also the top-ranked team on January 14, 2017. The Wildcats fell to 5-15 all-time against the No. 1 team in the country, including 4-5 at Bramlage Coliseum.

Baylor jumped out to a 16-point lead in the first half, as the Big 12's top defense held K-State without a field goal for more than 7 minutes. However, a 3-pointer from senior&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6405">Xavier Sneed</a>, the last of three consecutive triples, pulled the Wildcats to within one possession at 29-26 with 2:18 to play.

Leading just 33-28 at the half, Baylor grabbed the momentum early in the second half, scoring 9 of the first 13 points to push the lead back into double figures at 42-32 with 14:05 remaining. Both teams hit 50 percent from the field in the second half, while Baylor was able to convert 55.6 percent (5-of-9) from 3-point range. Sneed scored 13 of his 23 points after halftime, while Butler and Teague led the Bears with 8 points each.

This will mark the first meeting between the schools this season. It will represent the 21st meeting with the No. 1 team in school history and the first since a 77-68 loss at home to top-ranked Baylor on Jan. 14, 2017.&nbsp;

K-State has five wins all-time against the nation's No. 1 team in its history with four of those coming in Bramlage Coliseum (Missouri in 1990, Texas in 2010, Kansas in 2011 and Oklahoma in 2016). The other win came against top-ranked Kansas in Allen Fieldhouse on Jan. 17, 1994. (AP) — They were celebrating the passage of time as much as football at this Super Bowl: 100-year-old war veterans at midfield for the pregame coin flip, a 50-years-young pop diva handling halftime, and, of course, a quarterback who turns 25 this year saving the best part of the show for last.

That quarterback is Patrick Mahomes of the Kansas City Chiefs.

It is easy, especially after the improbable, blink-and-you-miss-it escape act he engineered to win the title Sunday, to say Mahomes — a mobile, dual threat with a rocket arm — is what the perfect quarterback will look like as the NFL gets ready to embark on its second century of football next season.

But what Mahomes did on a cool, crisp evening in South Florida was grounded in the most basic of sports concepts, one that harkens to the days of leather helmets and long bus rides to the games.

“My mindset,” Mahomes said, “is always to play and compete to the very end.”

And so he did. He injected life into a stymied offense that looked all but done-for, coaxed three touchdowns out of that offense over the short span of 5 minutes, 1 second late in the fourth quarter and pulled out a 31-20 victory over San Francisco in a game that seemed all but lost.

Three times during this postseason, Mahomes and the Chiefs have trailed by 10 points or more, and all three times they’ve come back to win by double-digits themselves. That’s a first. But even that history-making feat doesn’t do justice to what Mahomes pulled off in the final game of the NFL’s much-celebrated centennial.

After Mahomes threw the first postseason interception of his three-year-old career —“I hit him right between the ‘5’ and the ’4,” he said of the pick to linebacker Fred Warner — the 49ers drove 55 methodical yards to take a 20-10 lead.

There was 2:35 left on in the third quarter and the Chiefs, used to buzzing up and down the field to the tune of 51 and 35 points in the two earlier games this postseason, had gained 187 yards and amassed only 136 passing. They had scored a measly touchdown and a field goal and hadn’t cracked a single play longer than 19 yards.

“I wasn’t feeling good about it at all,” said receiver Tyreek Hill, who would soon prove critical in turning around the game. “I told Pat, ‘It’s 20-10 with seven minutes left — c’mon bro,’ And all Pat did, he just told me to believe.”

Up against a defense that had allowed a total of eight completions on downfield throws all season, the receiver with track-star speed somehow found a soft spot deep in the 49ers secondary. Mahomes, harassed all night into quick, off-target throws, dropped 13 yards behind the line of scrimmage, surveyed the field — then stepped up and heaved it. The ball dropped soft as a feather into Hill’s arms. Four plays later, Kansas City, only moments earlier thinking of concession speeches, was within three points.

“I’m not sure exactly what happened,” 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said, when asked to reflect on the play that swung the momentum.

Rarely has a game turned so rapidly. Rarely has a team still behind on the scoreboard seemed so destined to win.

It all happened so fast, in fact, that everything before it felt like a mirage.

Hours earlier, to celebrate its 100th year, the NFL brought&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/d988d09c84e4b4e20e052c6f467a3cca">four centenarian World War II veterans</a>&nbsp;to midfield to preside over the pregame coin flip. But when the smoke cleared from J-Lo and the third quarter started, he was no better.

“We knew it would be a close game, and there would be some challenges,” Reid said. “He kept firing. That’s what he did. The guys around him just believed in him. We all did.”

After the touchdown that made it 20-17, it took all of three plays for the Chiefs defense to get the ball back to Mahomes.

On the next possession, he struck for another long play — this one to receiver Sammy Watkins who torched the 49ers premier defensive back, Richard Sherman, at the line of scrimmage and got behind him for the easiest 38-yard catch he’ll ever make. Three plays later, it was 24-20.

Less than 90 seconds after that, it was 31-20, and long-suffering Kansas City had won the Super Bowl.

It didn’t take long for the questions to start coming about a young team with a young quarterback and a grizzled old coach in Reid who thinks young: Could this be the first of many?

“I mean, obviously, I’ve had a great start to my career,” said Mahomes, who finished with 286 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions, in flicking it away.

Does he see himself as the new face of the NFL?

“There are a lot of young quarterbacks, and still a lot of veteran guys that are playing at a very high level,” he said. “So, I just try to be the best Patrick Mahomes I can be.”

Tulsa (15-6, 7-1 American) takes over sole possession in of first-place in the conference standings after Houston's loss at Cincinnati.

Wichita State (17-4, 5-3) had won five-straight and 12 of the last 13 series meetings.&nbsp;

Shockers Drop Heartbreaker at Tulsa

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) —The comeback Chiefs did it again and are Super Bowl champions.

Patrick Mahomes threw for a pair of touchdowns in the game’s final 6:13, helping the Kansas City Chiefs erase a 10-point deficit and beat the San Francisco 49ers 31-20 in Super Bowl 54.

The go-ahead score: A 5-yard touchdown pass to Damien Williams with 2:44 left. Williams is a former Miami Dolphins running back and returned to his former field — Hard Rock Stadium — to enjoy the most significant night of his career.

Williams finished off the title march with a touchdown run with 1:12 left, a 38-yarder around the left end to seal the outcome.

It’s the first Super Bowl crown for Chiefs coach Andy Reid, who’ll no longer wear the distinction of being the winningest coach in NFL history without a championship.

The Chiefs had a comeback flair throughout the playoffs, getting down 24-0 to Houston in the divisional round and then rallying from deficits of 10-0 and 17-7 to beat Tennessee in the AFC championship game.

They did it one more time, on football’s biggest stage, and are Super Bowl champions for the second time. The Chiefs lost the first Super Bowl, then won Super Bowl 4 — some 50 years ago.

San Francisco was in the Super Bowl for the seventh time and fell just short of winning what would have been a record-tying sixth championship. Only New England and Pittsburgh have six titles, and the 49ers were about six minutes away from joining their club.

And then they collapsed, giving up three touchdowns in a span of about five minutes. Mahomes finished 26 of 42 passing for 286 yards, his last pass intentionally going incomplete on the final play — a heave downfield to erase the final 5 seconds of Kansas City’s 50-year wait.

They lead San Francisco 31-20, after ripping off 21 points in a span of about five minutes.

Just like that, the Kansas City Chiefs have taken the lead in Super Bowl 54.

Patrick Mahomes connected with Damien Williams on a 5-yard scoring pass with 2:44 left, and the Chiefs now lead the San Francisco 49ers 24-20. Mahomes connected with Sammy Watkins for a 38-yard gain down the right sideline, the biggest blow on the drive.

Williams is a former member of the Miami Dolphins, and now has a go-ahead score in the Super Bowl in his former home stadium. The play to the right pylon held up after a lengthy replay review.

The Chiefs have been masters of comebacks throughout this postseason, erasing double-digit deficits to beat Houston and Tennessee.

And now they’re on the cusp of doing it again for a Super Bowl title.

The Chiefs are about to get the ball back in Super Bowl 54, down by just three.

San Francisco went three-and-out on the possession following Patrick Mahomes’ touchdown pass to Travis Kelce. The 49ers’ drive took only about a minute off the clock.

The 49ers still lead, 20-17. Kansas City is taking over at its own 35 with 5:10 remaining in the game.

Mahomes connected with Travis Kelce for a 1-yard touchdown pass with 6:13 left, pulling the Chiefs within 20-17 of the San Francisco 49ers. The score snapped a run of 17 unanswered points by the 49ers.

Facing third-and-15 from his own 35 with about 7 minutes left, Mahomes spun away from heavy pressure and heaved the ball toward Tyreek Hill for what became a 44-yard gain down to the San Francisco 21 and essentially kept the Chiefs’ hopes alive.

They got some help on the next third down. Mahomes’ pass on third-and-10 toward Kelce in the end zone led to the 49ers getting flagged for pass interference. On the next snap, Mahomes and Kelce connected for the 1-yard touchdown pass.

Mahomes is now 21 of 36 passing for 226 yards.

Attendance for the Super Bowl was 62,417.

In terms of official numbers, that is the second-lowest attendance in the game’s history behind only Super Bowl 1 — which drew 61,946 fans and didn’t even sell out.

Sunday’s game at Hard Rock Stadium was a sellout, though was much lower than the 74,059 who came to the game the last time it was at the Miami Dolphins’ home stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida.

Dolphins owner Stephen Ross spent more than $500 million refurbishing and remodeling the stadium since, and one of the things he did was lower the capacity considerably.

San Francisco is in control, and Kansas City’s Patrick Mahomes has been intercepted for the second time this half.

Mahomes’ giveaway with 11:57 left in the game ended a drive where the Chiefs were in position to get at least three points and cut into San Francisco’s 20-10 lead.

But on third-and-6 from the 49ers’ 23, the Chiefs simply couldn’t deliver. Mahomes’ pass was thrown a tiny bit behind Tyreek Hill, who couldn’t secure the catch. The ball bounced off his hands and landed in the arms of San Francisco’s Tarvarius Moore, who returned it seven yards to the 49ers’ 20.

Raheem Mostert went in from a yard out, and San Francisco took a 20-10 lead over Kansas City with 2:35 left in the third quarter.

The 49ers needed just under three minutes to go 55 yards in six plays, with Jimmy Garoppolo connecting with Kendrick Bourne on a big 11-yard gain while facing 3rd-and-eight to keep things going.

That’s now 17 unanswered points for the 49ers. They’re outgaining the Chiefs 292-185.

The 49ers have outgained the Chiefs 177-155 and seemed poised to take the lead when Jimmy Garoppolo connected with tight end George Kittle on a 42-yard play that would have gotten San Francisco inside the Kansas City 15 with 6 seconds left.

But Kittle was called for offensive pass interference to nullify the big play, the 49ers took a knee on the ensuing snap to run out the clock, and off to halftime they went.

This is the first time the Super Bowl was tied at the half since 2015, when Seattle and New England went into the break knotted at 14.

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is 12 for 18 passing for 104 yards. Garoppolo is 9 for 11 for 89 yards and the game’s lone passing touchdown.

Tom Brady ran a Super Bowl trick play without putting on a uniform.

The 42-year-old longtime Patriots quarterback can become an unrestricted free agent for the first time in his career when his contract ends in March, and he gave New England a fright in a commercial during the first half of Sunday’s game.

“They say all good things must come to an end, that the best just know when to walk away,” Brady said in the ad, walking through an empty football stadium and hinting at a possible retirement.

Brady says he has a major announcement, the music cuts out — and then he reveals he’s reading a script for Hulu.

“Me,” Brady adds, “I’m not going anywhere.”

The scoreboard inside Hard Rock Stadium briefly said San Francisco 13, Kansas City 10 after that touchdown. It was corrected after a few moments.

Another fourth-and-1 call by Chiefs coach Andy Reid has paid off.

Harrison Butker’s 31-yard field goal with 9:32 left in the first half was good, and Kansas City has pushed its lead over San Francisco to 10-3.

Damien Williams got three yards on fourth-and-1 from the San Francisco 19 to keep the drive going.

A woman has apparently tried to get onto the field at Super Bowl 54.

Security personnel stopped the woman’s bid during the first quarter. An Associated Press photographer captured images of the woman being tackled by security before she made it onto the playing surface.

It was not immediately clear if the woman would be facing charges.

The Chiefs took a risk and wound up with a touchdown.
