Monarchs draw first round bye in NBC World Series

Kansas City, Mo. —&nbsp; The Kansas City Royals announced today that they have signed right-handed pitcher Matt Harvey to a minor league contract. Per club policy, terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

Harvey, 31, made 12 starts for the Los Angeles Angels last season, going 3-5 with a 7.09 ERA (47 ER in 59.2 IP). In 2018, he made 28 starts between the New York Mets and Cincinnati, combining to go 7-9 with a 4.94 ERA (85 ER in 155.0 IP) and 131 strikeouts.

The right-hander was an All-Star with the Mets in 2013, finishing fourth in National League Cy Young Award voting that season. He also led New York to the World Series in 2015, serving as the Game 1 starter in both the NLCS vs. the Cubs and the Fall Classic against the Royals. That season, he set career highs in wins (13), starts (29) and innings (189.1), posting a 2.71 ERA (57 ER in 189.1 IP) along with 188 strikeouts (8.9 K/9).

Harvey was most recently with the Oakland A’s organization at the end of the 2019 season, but was granted free agency last November and did not sign with a Major League club during the offseason.

Pronger just decided the time was right to step away from the game, even with the Panthers making a playoff push. The Hockey Hall of Fame defenseman will keep an eye on his former team, and maybe even root for some of the others he played for in his prime as one of the most intimidating blue liners in NHL history.&nbsp;

Tatis Jr., Grisham power Padres to 6-2 win vs. Diamondbacks

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Fernando Tatis Jr. raced around the bases on a three-run triple that highlighted a five-run rally and Trent Grisham hit his first home run for the San Diego Padres, who beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 6-2 Monday to take three of four games in their opening series.

The Padres, who feel they're built for success in this pandemic-shortened 60-game season, outscored the Diamondbacks 21-9 in the four games. San Diego hasn't been to the playoffs since winning consecutive NL West titles in 2005-06. It hasn't had a winning season since 2010.

— Alex Bregman hit his 100th career homer, a three-run shot, and Jose Altuve added a solo drive to give the Houston Astros an 8-5 win over the Seattle Mariners. The Astros trailed by two in the third inning before Bregman's first home run of the season put them ahead 4-3. Altuve, who had two RBIs, connected in the fifth for the first of three runs to pad the lead and help the Astros take three of four in the series from their AL West foes.

—Teoscar Hernández hit two of Toronto's four solo homers off Aníbal Sánchez to account for all the Blue Jays' scoring in a 4-1 victory over the Washington Nationals. Rowdy Tellez and Danny Jansen also went deep for the Blue Jays. Toronto was without two key players. Closer Ken Giles went on the injured list Monday, and shortstop Bo Bichette was scratched from the lineup about 15 minutes before the first pitch with a tight left hamstring. Toronto improved to 2-2 and dropped the reigning World Series champions to 1-3. Washington got 11 hits but left 10 runners on base.

—Hunter Renfroe homered twice and Tampa Bay pitchers set a team nine-inning record with 19 strikeouts in the Rays' 14-5 romp over the Atlanta Braves. Tyler Glasnow struck out nine and allowed one hit over four innings in first start after missing part of summer camp with the Rays after testing positive for the coronavirus.

— Anthony Rizzo homered for the third time, and the Chicago Cubs held on for an 8-7 victory over a Cincinnati Reds team coping with coronavirus uncertainty. Jeremy Jeffress escaped a bases-loaded threat in the ninth for his first save with the Cubs. Wade Miley failed to make it through the second inning of his Reds debut. Rizzo scored three times as the Cubs won for the third time in four games. The Reds dropped to 1-3, a disappointing start after their $165 million offseason makeover.

— Tyler Chatwood pitched three-hit ball over six innings, Willson Contreras homered and the Chicago Cubs beat the Milwaukee Brewers 9-1 to take two of three in their opening series. Chatwood gave the Cubs just the sort of outing they were looking for after working mostly out of the bullpen last season. He struck out eight and walked two in an impressive start for a pitcher who struggled with his control his first two years in Chicago. Contreras smacked an RBI double in the Cubs' four-run fourth and a long solo homer in the seventh. 

At least 3 MLB games postponed amid Marlins' virus outbreak

UNDATED (AP) — More than a dozen Miami Marlins players and staff members tested positive for COVID-19 in an outbreak that stranded the team in Philadelphia, disrupting Major League Baseball's schedule on the fifth day of the pandemic-delayed season. Miami's home opener against Baltimore was postponed as was Tuesday's finale of the two-game series at Marlins Park. Also postponed was the Yankees' series opener Monday at Philadelphia, where New York would have been in the same clubhouse the Marlins used last weekend.

Nine Marlins players on the 30-man roster, two taxi squad players and two staff members tested positive.

The Yankees are staying in Philadelphia and have their own clubhouse staff with the team there. The Marlins postponed their flight home Sunday night after their series finale against the Phillies.

The Orioles are scheduled to host the Marlins in a two-game series starting Wednesday.

—The series opener between the Chicago White Sox and Cleveland Indians has been postponed by rain. The teams will make up the game as part of a traditional doubleheader on Tuesday, starting at 3:40 p.m. Before the game was postponed, the White Sox announced that manager Rick Renteria will be kept away from the team pending the results of medical tests. 

— Two-time AL Cy Young winner Corey Kluber (KLOO'-bur) could be done for the season. He is headed to the injured list after just one inning in his debut as a Texas Rangers starter. Kluber has a tear in a small muscle in his right shoulder and is not expected to make another start this season — if he pitches at all. 

— Utility player Josh Harrison has signed a one-year contract with the Washington Nationals less than a week after he was released by the Philadelphia Phillies. The Nationals added the 33-year-old Harrison to their 30-man active roster Monday. To make room, catcher Raudy Read was optioned to Washington's alternate training site in Fredericksburg, Virginia. 

—The Colorado Rockies say left-handed pitcher Tim Collins has opted out of the 2020 season. Collins is the second player in the organization who has withdrawn. In late June, Rockies outfielder Ian Desmond announced he wouldn't play this season, in part because of the coronavirus pandemic. 

UNDATED (AP) — The National Hockey League reported zero players tested positive for the coronavirus last week.

The league says it administered a total of 4,256 tests to more than 800 players from July 18-25. Two players tested positive during the first week of training camps July 13-17.

Players and staff from the 24 teams participating in the expanded Stanley Cup playoffs traveled to the hub cities of Toronto and Edmonton, Alberta, on Sunday. They're now in a quarantined bubble and will be tested daily after every other day testing during camp.

Goodell sends letter to NFL fans explaining plans for season

NEW YORK (AP) — NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has sent a letter to fans outlining the league's plans to play during the coronavirus pandemic.

As veterans begin reporting to training camps this week, Goodell noted Monday how COVID-19 has "turned the world upside down."

He wrote that "COVID-19 will continue to present a major challenge to nearly every area of American life. Football is no exception," 

The league and the players' union reached agreement on a plan last Friday, after all preseason games were canceled. Team facilities were shut down by Goodell in late March and only began reopening on a cautious basis this summer. Goodell stressed the need for adaptability on all levels, citing how a virtual draft was held in April. All 32 teams held remote offseason training sessions, too.

The NFL has opted not to create a bubble environment, something the NHL, NBA, WNBA and MLS have done. With Major League Baseball experiencing difficulties on its first weekend of play with a plan similar to the NFL's, there is added anxiety about what Goodell's league has planned.

— Minnesota Vikings vice president of sports medicine Eric Sugarman has tested positive for COVID-19. Sugarman is in charge of the organization's virus prevention plan as the infection control officer. The team announced that Sugarman and his family tested positive over the weekend. The Vikings said they've tested all individuals who'd recently been in close contact with Sugarman. 

—New Orleans Saints general manager Mickey Loomis says the club has signed its four 2020 draft picks to four-year contracts. The signings were announced as rookies reported for training camp on Monday. New Orleans' most recent draft class is headlined by first-round pick Cesar Ruiz. The Saints also drafted Wisconsin linebacker Zack Baun and Dayton tight end Adam Trautman in the third round. They took Mississippi State quarterback Tommy Stevens in the seventh round. 

— Saints quarterback Drew Brees and his wife, Brittany, say they're donating $5 million toward a partnership with a Louisiana health care provider to build "numerous" health centers in economically struggling communities around the state. Brees said in his announcement on social media that the first center will be built later this year in eastern New Orleans in partnership with Ochsner Health. 

— The Buffalo Bills have released receiver Ray-Ray McCloud and offensive lineman Garrett McGhin a day before players were set to report for the start of training camp. The moves on Monday trim Buffalo's roster to 86, with teams required to have a maximum 80 players by Aug. 16. 

—Washington has put quarterback Alex Smith on the physically unable to perform list at the start of training camp. Smith's right leg has recovered 20 months after he broke the fibula and tibia in it during a game. But the 36-year-old veteran hasn't been fully cleared for practices and full football activity. 

— The Tennessee Titans now have only their first-round draft pick left unsigned after agreeing to terms with cornerback Kristian Fulton. The Titans announced the deal with their second-round selection Monday night. The No. 61 pick overall, Fulton started two seasons at LSU and helped the Tigers win a national title last season. . That leaves only offensive tackle Isaiah Wilson, the No. 29 pick overall, left unsigned out of Tennessee's six-man draft class. 

Irving commits $1.5 million for WNBA players skipping season

NEW YORK (AP) — Brooklyn Nets star Kyrie Irving is committing $1.5 million to supplement the income of WNBA players who choose not to play this season. That can be because of coronavirus concerns or social justice reasons.

The funds will come from the KAI Empowerment Initiative that Irving launched today. It will also provide players with a financial literacy program created by UBS.

The WNBA season began Saturday and will be played entirely at the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida. To be eligible for Irving's program, WNBA players must give insight into their decisions and not be receiving salaries from any other entity.

In other virus-related sports developments:

— The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference has decided to cancel fall sports competition due to continuing health and safety concerns surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic. MAAC Commissioner Rich Ensor says there are simply too many factors that prohibit the conference from safely delivering a competitive atmosphere. A decision on whether fall sports competition would be feasible in the spring will be determined by the conference presidents at a later date. 

— The NASCAR weekend in late August at Dover International Speedway will take place without fans. Delaware state officials denied the track's request to host a limited number of fans Aug. 21-23 in the interest of public health and safety. The track is to host a NASCAR Xfinity Series and NASCAR Cup Series on Saturday and Sunday of that weekend.

— The U.S. Tennis Association has canceled two lower-tier tennis tournaments in Orlando, Florida, saying that the coronavirus pandemic makes it too dangerous to hold the events without a bubble setup. The USTA says ATP Challenger 150 tourneys that were supposed to start on Aug. 22 and Aug. 29 at its national campus are being scrapped.

Ex-UCLA coach pleads guilty to accepting $200K in bribes

UNDATED (AP) — A former University of California, Los Angeles men's soccer coach pleaded guilty Monday to accepting $200,000 in bribes to help two students get into the school as recruits. 

Jorge Salcedo, 47, admitted to participating in the college admissions bribery scheme involving TV celebrities, other wealthy parents and elite universities across the country. Salcedo was paid $100,000 to help California couple Bruce and Davina Isackson get their daughter into UCLA as a bogus soccer recruit, prosecutors said. The Isacksons have also pleaded guilty and have been cooperating with authorities in the hope of getting a lighter sentence.

Ex-49er Dana Stubblefield convicted of raping disabled woman

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — Former San Francisco 49er Dana Stubblefield has been convicted of the rape of a developmentally disabled woman. Prosecutors said he lured the victim to his home with the promise of a babysitting job. 

A jury on Monday found the 49-year-old guilty of rape by force, oral copulation by force and false imprisonment. Jurors also found that Stubblefield used a gun during the assault. 

Stubblefield could face 15 years to life in prison. His lawyers say there was no rape and the woman consented to sex. They plan to seek a new trial. 

Stubblefield was a defensive lineman for the San Francisco 49ers and the Oakland Raiders.

A jury on Monday found the 49-year-old guilty of rape by force, oral copulation by force and false imprisonment. Jurors also found that Stubblefield used a gun during the assault. Stubblefield could face 15 years to life in prison. His lawyers say there was no rape and the woman consented to sex. They plan to seek a new trial. Stubblefield was a defensive lineman for the San Francisco 49ers and the Oakland Raiders.

DETROIT, Michigan. - At some point, the Royals figured they would have to break out of an early-season slump after scoring only five runs in three games in Cleveland to open the 2020 campaign.

And the Royals did so with authority on Monday night at Comerica Park, blasting six home runs, tying a club record, in a 14-6 victory over the Tigers. Kansas City evened its record at 2-2, as it rallied back from an early four-run deficit.

“Just proud of this group,” Royals manager Mike Matheny said. “You give up a five-spot [in the second], and it’s really easy to get down. But the guys stayed with it. ... There were just some great at-bats.”

However, Griffin, the Royals' first-round pick in the 2014 MLB Draft, earned the victory and became the third pitcher since 1901 to win his Major League debut on his birthday, joining Edwin Jackson (Sept. 9, 2003) and Zach Day (June 15, 2002).

“He was a little distraught after the game,” Matheny said. “He’s been so disciplined and stayed so healthy his whole career. It’s one of those peaks and valleys the whole day.

“It was a lifelong goal of his to get here, and now you have that uncertainty.”

Plans for the college football season — if it is played — should start coming into focus this week.

They will trickle down from the top of major college football, with Power Five conferences putting in place revised schedules they hope will make it easier to manage potential disruptions brought on by COVID-19.

The Power Five commissioners talked a lot in the spring about the importance of collaboration and trying to launch the season together, with all of the Football Bowl Subdivision acting in unison. The way things are heading, that appears to be out the window.

Here’s where each conference stands with the first scheduled college football games about a month away.

The ACC is looking at an 11-game schedule that would include 10 conference games and start Sept. 12. The headline-grabber is that Notre Dame, which normally plays five or six ACC teams per season, could be a full conference member for this season. The Fighting Irish have never played in a football conference before. That still needs to be worked out and other models are still being considered, including one with eight conference games and one nonconference.

The first conference to announce it would play only conference games. The assumption/speculation has been that the Big Ten would add another game to its existing nine-game schedule to get to 10 and have that in place before the end of July, but the conference has been typically coy about when it will reveal its plans.

The Big 12 has been the conference most publicly determined to try to play all its games. “We decided a long time ago that if we were going to go away from our regular schedule that we would need to be forced into it by the circumstances, by the situation that was there,” Big 12 Commissioner Bob Bowlsby said. “And so far we haven’t been forced into it.”

Instead of delaying the start of the season, the Big 12 is taking the opposite approach, moving the start up to create more open dates for potential makeup games. Kansas has scheduled Southern Illinois (a replacement for another Football Championship Subdivision school) for Aug. 29. Oklahoma also pushed its game against Missouri State to the so-called Week Zero. There have been reports that TCU will play on Aug. 29 against UNLV in the first game at the new NFL stadium in Las Vegas. Both the Horned Frogs and Rebels had games against California canceled when the Pac-12 scrapped nonconference games.

The Pac-12 went conference-only a couple of days after the Big Ten, but it said it would deliver a new schedule by July 31. The San Jose Mercury News&nbsp;<a href="https://www.mercurynews.com/2020/07/23/revised-pac-12-football-schedule-features-mid-september-start-and-multiple-dates-for-the-championship-game/" target="_blank">reported last week the Pac-12 is expected to go with 10 games and start on Sept. 19</a>. That kickoff date could be moved back as far as Oct. 3 if state restrictions enacted to stem spikes in COVID-19 cases force Pac-12 teams to delay the start of preseason practice.

SEC athletic directors left an in-person meeting with Commissioner Greg Sankey in Birmingham, Alabama, a couple of weeks ago with a few scheduling models on the table. Conference-only games never made sense for the SEC (or the ACC and Big 12). Why prevent Georgia, Florida, Kentucky and South Carolina from playing in-state ACC rivals? Auburn also is scheduled to play North Carolina from the ACC in Atlanta. The SEC could add a conference game to its eight-game slate. There has also been talk within the league of letting teams play as many nonconference games as they can to try to get as close as possible to a full 12-game season. The Big 12 is taking this approach, too. The SEC’s final decision could linger into next week.

It is not entirely fair to lump the American Athletic Conference, Mountain West, Mid-American Conference, Conference USA and Sun Belt together, but the fact is all are at the mercy of the Power Five in some way.

“We’re paying close attention to what the (autonomy) five are doing,” American Athletic Conference Commissioner Mike Aresco told Yahoo! Sports last week. “We don’t have any illusions, they drive the train here.”

The Big Ten and Pac-12 already have left holes all over Group of Five schedules and potentially in budgets. Many of those canceled nonconference games came with big paydays for the smaller schools. The MAC lost 11 games against Big Ten teams. The Mountain West is out 13 games, some of them home games, because of the Pac-12′s decision.

With the ACC heading toward dropping most of its nonconference schedule, a bunch more G5 teams are going to be out of luck. Big 12 and SEC teams might fill a few holes, but most likely they will have to turn to each other and FCS schools if they want to play more than conference games. Same goes for the independents not named Notre Dame such as BYU.

But is it worth it? Playing just conference games could save a bunch on travel costs. Those buy games against Power Five teams often fund a big chunk of the rest of the season. If that goes away, some G5 schools might not be able to afford to play a full schedule. Same goes for FCS.

Big 12 and SEC teams might fill a few holes, but most likely they will have to turn to each other and FCS schools if they want to play more than conference games. Same goes for the independents not named Notre Dame such as BYU.But is it worth it? Playing just conference games could save a bunch on travel costs. Those buy games against Power Five teams often fund a big chunk of the rest of the season. If that goes away, some G5 schools might not be able to afford to play a full schedule. Same goes for FCS.

A Monarch was the king of the diamond Saturday night in the Sunflower League All Star Game.

Dylan Nedved was named the MVP after his two hit, four RBI performance in an 8-0 win for the West. Nine Monarchs were on the winning squad.

The Monarchs get back into action tonight against the Sunflower Seeds at Hobart-Detter. First pitch is at 7 p.m. 

The next live stream on Hutch Post will be the last game of that four game set Thursday night.

Shelton pulled a gaiter over his face as he left the dugout, and Baker pulled a face mask out of his pocket and held it to his face as Shelton argued from about six feet away. Baker let Shelton say his peace, and the first-year skipper was not ejected.

CLEVELAND (AP) — Carlos Carrasco struck out 10 and won his first start since being stricken with leukemia last year, leading the Cleveland Indians to a 9-2 win over the Kansas City Royals. José Ramírez homered twice, drove in four runs and scored four as Cleveland won two of three in the series. Kansas City advanced to the quarterfinals of the MLS is Back tournament in a match that wrapped up around 1:15 a.m. Alan Pulido, Ilie Sanchez and Busio scored for Kansas City in the penalty shootout, finally getting shots past Vancouver goalkeeper Thomas Hasal after he spent the night keeping the Whitecaps in the game. &nbsp;

UNDATED (AP) — Gleyber Torres had the big hits as the New York Yankees took the rubber match of their three-game series with the defending World Series champs.

The Yanks trailed 2-0 until Torres delivered a solo homer and a go-ahead single to lead a 3-2 victory over the Nationals in Washington. Patrick Corbin retired New York's first 11 batters and 18 of the first 19. But Torres ended the shutout bid with a long home with one out in the seventh to chase Corbin.

Nats reliever Will Harris promptly served up a solo homer by Luke Voit (voyt) that knotted the score.

Winning pitcher Mitch Heller allowed a run and three hits over five innings to help Pittsburgh beat St. Louis for just the second time in their last 14 meetings.

— The Mariners finally beat the Astros for the first time in 16 tries as Kyle Lewis hit a tiebreaking, two-run single in the eighth inning of Seattle's 7-6 verdict over Houston. The Mariners trailed by 1 entering the eighth until Shed Long Jr.'s run-scoring single tied it at 5 with one out. Tim Lopes had three hits and scored twice for Seattle, which went 1-18 versus the Astros last year.

— The Twins regained their power stroke as Jake Cave hit a grand slam and Nelson Cruz homered twice in a 14-2 assault on the White Sox. Cruz added two doubles and drove in seven runs for the reigning AL Central champion Twins, who set a major league record for home runs last year. Kenta Maeda (mah-EH'-dah) allowed two runs and struck out six in five innings to win his Minnesota debut.

— Kevin Kiermaier's first hit of the season was a two-run triple in the 10th inning that gave the Rays a 6-5 victory over the Blue Jays. The Rays scored twice in the ninth to force extra innings, then fell behind again 5-4 when Blue Jays pinch-runner Santiago Espinal stole third base and scored on Lourdes Gurriel Jr.'s sacrifice fly. — The Orioles earned a 7-4 victory against the Red Sox as Rio Ruiz and Anthony Santander each belted two-run homers. Baltimore's Wade LeBlanc gave up two home runs but settled down over 5 2/3 innings, allowing four runs and four hits while striking out four.

— Brian Anderson and Miguel Rojas each hit three-run homers to power the Marlins to an 11-6 rout of the Phillies. Miami rallied from 4-0 and 5-4 holes to rough up embattled Phillies starter Vince Velasquez and four relievers. The Marlins took the rubber match despite the absence of hurler Jose Urena, who was scratched about 90 minutes before the first pitch amid concerns of a team outbreak of the coronavirus.

— The Tigers pulled out a 3-2 win over the Reds on C.J. Cron's tiebreaking, two-run homer in the ninth inning. Detroit rallied after Cincinnati starter Trevor Bauer matched a career high with 13 strikeouts over 6 1/3 innings. — The Diamondbacks scored twice in each of their final two at-bats to down the Padres, 4-3. Ketel Marte scored the tying run in the eighth and lifted a sacrifice fly in the ninth to put Arizona ahead. David Peralta's RBI single capped the Diamondbacks' scoring.

Kluber pulled early, Verlander shut down 

UNDATED (AP) — The injury news isn't good for a pair of Texas major league teams.

Reigning AL Cy Young Award winner Justin Verlander has a strained right forearm and will be shut down for at least two weeks.

Astros manager Dusty Baker made the announcement on Sunday but denied a report that said the injury would end Verlander's season. He said Verlander would be evaluated after two weeks.

Baker said Verlander felt "tenderness" in his arm during his start on Friday, where he pitched six innings and got the win. He had an MRI on Saturday, and now he'll miss at least roughly a third of this 60-game regular season. 

Meanwhile, Rangers right-hander Corey Kluber (KLOO'-bur) left his first start in almost 15 months after just one inning Sunday due to shoulder tightness. 

The two-time Cy Young Award winner was making his first appearance for a team other than Cleveland after an offseason trade. He threw 18 pitches while facing three batters. Colorado's Trevor Story walked and was thrown out trying to steal. 

The Rangers said the 34-year-old Kluber reported feeling the tightness in the first few pitches and it got worse as the inning progressed. He was examined by a team doctor and will be further evaluated Monday. 

— Red Sox pitcher Eduardo Rodriguez says he is awaiting results of additional testing after doctors recently discovered an issue with his heart they believe is a result of his recent bout with COVID-19. The 27-year-old left-hander tested positive for the coronavirus before the start of summer camp, but was cleared and returned to workouts on July 18. He hasn't had another positive coronavirus test, but said an MRI revealed a condition called myocarditis, that the team's medical staff felt was serious enough to shut him down for at least a week. 

— Reds second baseman Mike Moustakas (moos-TAH'-kahs) went on the injured list Sunday after he woke up feeling sick. Manager David Bell said Moustakas didn't feel well when he woke up Sunday morning and was told to stay home as a precaution. Center fielder Nick Senzel was a late scratch from Cincinnati's lineup for the final game of a series against the Tigers. The moves came a day after Reds infielder Matt Davidson went on the injured list because he tested positive for COVID-19. 

— The President has backed out of an opportunity to throw out the ceremonial first pitch at Yankee Stadium on Aug. 15. Donald Trump tweeted Sunday that he won't be able to make the trip because of his "strong focus" on the coronavirus, vaccines and the economy. Trump said in the tweet: "We will make it later in the season!" 

Clippers' Williams will serve 10-day quarantine, miss games 

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (AP) — The NBA said Sunday that Lou Williams of the Los Angeles Clippers is being quarantined for 10 days because of his trip out of the league's bubble last week to attend a family member's funeral. 

He will miss at least two of the Clippers' seeding games, including their July 30 opener against the Los Angeles Lakers. It's possible he could miss more than two since his likely release will be Aug. 4, the day of the Clippers' third seeding game. 

The issue was not that Williams left the bubble but that he also went to a club on that trip to Atlanta, and photographs of that visit appeared on social media. That prompted an investigation by NBA security. 

— Joel Embiid (joh-EHL' ehm-BEED') is hurting, and that's a cause for concern as the Philadelphia 76ers get set to restart their season this week. The All-Star starting center sat out Philadelphia's scrimmage against Oklahoma City on Sunday with right calf tightness, something 76ers coach Brett Brown hopes is merely a minor blip. Embiid has an extensive injury history and has never appeared in more than 64 games in a regular season. He missed 21 of Philadelphia's 65 games this season before the March 11 shutdown. 

— Boston's Kemba Walker and Phoenix's Ricky Rubio were back in action Sunday, going head-to-head in a Celtics-Suns scrimmage. Both missed the first scrimmages with their teams inside the NBA bubble last week. Walker missed the first scrimmage with left knee soreness. Rubio was a late arrival at Disney and the Suns wanted to get him a couple of more practices before he saw any scrimmage action. 

UNDATED (AP) — The Arizona Coyotes aren't very happy with John Chayka's decision to step down just a week after the team opens the Stanley Cup qualifiers against Nashville.

The Coyotes issued a statement saying they are disappointed in his actions and his timing of the resignation. They added that "Chayka has chosen to quit on a strong and competitive team, a dedicated staff, and the Arizona Coyotes fans, the greatest fans in the NHL."

Chayka made a name for himself as one of the NHL's top general managers since being promoted in 2016 and recently signed a contract extension through 2024 late last year. His relationship with new owner Alex Meruelo began to deteriorate when he asked for permission to pursue another, non-NHL opportunity. The Arizona Republic reported Chayka was not invited to a recent dinner with Meruelo and new CEO Xavier Gutierrez to talk with Taylor Hall about a contract extension. 

— Tampa Bay Lightning defenseman Victor Hedman won't travel with the team to the NHL's Eastern Conference "secure zone" in Toronto because of a personal matter. General manager Julien BriseBois (BREEZ'-bwah) says Hedman will go from his home to the rink and back and avoid the general public in Florida this week before joining his teammates. He's expected to be able to practice upon arrival and play in Tampa Bay's first playoff game Aug. 3. 

— Well-traveled NHL forward Eddie Shack has died at 83, according to the Toronto Maple Leafs. Known for his bruising style, distinctive skating gait and larger-than-life personality, Shack won four Stanley Cups with Toronto in the 1960s. Nicknamed "The Entertainer" — with his trademark cowboy hat and luxurious mustache — he scored the winning goal for the Leafs in the 1963 final. 

BLAINE, Minn. (AP) — Michael Thompson birdied two of the last three holes for a 4-under 67 and a two-stroke victory in the 3M Open. 

Thompson finished 19 under in his second PGA victory, seven years after his first.

Adam Long took second after a 64. Richy Werenski shared the lead with Thompson after both Friday and Saturday before shooting a 70 to fall into a tie for third at minus-16.

Tony Finau finished in the third-place group after a 68.
