WICHITA, Kan. - A complete effort from the West squad capped its 8-0 win in Saturday night’s showcase game at Eck Stadium.
West pitching was dominant, combining for a stellar shutout performance. Cheney starting pitcher Trevin Reynolds [Colorado Mesa, Las Vegas, Nev.] opened with two shutout innings and his relief corps allowed five hits through the rest of the game.
The West squads bats scored all eight runs in just two innings. The first three West hitters reached in the bottom of the second, bringing Hutchinson’s Clayton Chadwick [Sam Houston State, La Vernia, Texas] to the plate. The Monarch drove in its first run of the frame, but summer teammate Dylan Nedved [Iowa, Shawnee, Kan.] broke open the floodgates with a three-run triple with two outs.
Nedved drove in a fourth run in the fifth with an RBI single, giving him MVP honors on Saturday night.
“I was really excited to get the opportunity to play with such great ball players,” Nedved said. “After having no competition [in the spring], it’s been so nice to have great competition this summer.”
West and Cheney head coach Pat Hon said he and his staff watched in amazement as their pitching staff threw a shutout in Saturday night’s All-Star Game. The East were held hitless before a fourth-inning leadoff double from Newton’s Lincoln Andrews.
Six of the eight West pitchers recorded at least one strikeout, including a pair of punch outs from Nedved and relief pitcher Aaron Haase [Wichita State, Amarillo, Texas].
Andrews was East’s top hitter, finishing 2-for-2 and reaching in all three plate appearances. Each of the East’s final five pitchers pitched scoreless frames.
