Fortunately for Mickelson, he celebrated his 50th birthday in June. Such a milestone might bring a shudder to many folks, but it actually worked out quite nicely for Lefty. It grants him access to the PGA Tour Champions. That means he can keep fine-tuning his game when he makes his debut on the 50-and-over circuit at Ozarks National on Monday.

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (AP) — The Toronto Raptors and Boston Celtics will tangle in the second round of the NBA playoffs after completing four-game sweeps.

The Raptors put an emphatic stamp on their sweep by blasting the Nets, 150-122.

The Raptors had two players score at least 20 points off the bench, led by 29 from Norman Powell. Serge Ibaka (ih-BAH'-kah) added 27 points on 12 of 14 shooting and grabbed 15 rebounds. Toronto set an all-time NBA record with 100 bench points.

Pascal Siakam (see-A'-kam) finished with 20 points and 10 boards as the lone Toronto starter with more than 10 points.

The Raptors are 11-1 in the bubble, with the lone loss coming against Boston.

The Celtics took advantage of an injury and defeating the 76ers, 110-106. The game changed when Tobias Harris crashed to the floor at the 2:40 mark of the third quarter. Without Harris, Boston went on a 12-0 run and eventually led 96-79 in the opening minutes of the fourth.

Kemba Walker poured in 32 points in his first NBA series-clinching win.

Jayson Tatum finished with 28 points and a playoff career-high 15 rebounds.

Jamal Murray set a Denver playoff record with 50 points. That topped the old mark of 45 set by Spencer Haywood during the 1970 ABA playoffs, when the team was the Denver Rockets.

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (AP) — Magic forward James Ennis and Bucks forward Marvin Williams have been fined $15,000 each for a fight that led to their ejections from Game 3 of their teams' first-round playoff series Saturday. Ennis and Williams had been competing for rebounding position midway through the second quarter of the Bucks' 121-107 victory. They exchanged shoves as they headed back up the floor. 

UNDATED (AP) — The Boston Bruins have opened the second round of the Stanley Cup playoffs by defeating the team that took the No. 1 seed from them in the round-robin tournament.

Brad Marchand scored the eventual game-winning goal and had an assist while the Bruins were building a 3-0 lead in a 3-2 win over the Lightning. Marchand tallied 1:17 in the third period and set up Charlie Coyle late in the first.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Todd Reirden is out after just two seasons as head coach of the Washington Capitals.

The Capitals won two division titles in each season under Reirden but failed to capture a playoff series. He replaced Barry Trotz, who led the team to the 2018 Stanley Cup before heading to the Islanders in a contract dispute.

The Islanders completed a five-game series win against the Capitals on Thursday.

UNDATED (AP) — The San Francisco Giants have cut ties with outfielder Hunter Pence, ending a second stint with the fan favorite that didn't go nearly as well as his first.

The 37-year-old was designated for assignment to clear a spot on the 40-man roster for utility man Daniel Robertson, who was acquired Sunday from the Rays for cash or a player to be named later.

Pence was hitting just .096 with two home runs and six RBIs in 17 games. He was a fiery, emotional leader for the Giants from 2012-2018, helping anchor teams that won the World Series in 2012 and 2014. 

— The Angels will face the Indians in the 2021 Little League Classic at Williamsport, Pennsylvania. The game is scheduled for Aug. 22 at Bowman Field in front of a crowd predominantly made up of players, coaches and parents in Williamsport for the Little League World Series. 

Sato claims second Indianapolis 500 crown

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Takuma Sato snatched a second Indianapolis 500 victory as the Japanese racer held off Scott Dixon and ultimately won under caution.

IndyCar officials declined to throw a red flag after a violent crash by Spencer Pigot (pee-ZHOH') with just a handful of laps remaining. Pigot needed medical attention on the track, the crash scene was a debris field and there was no way the race could resume without a stoppage. 

Dixon dominated the race and asked on his radio if IndyCar was going to give the drivers a final shootout to the checkered flag, NASCAR style. But the five-time Indy-Car champion had to settle for second after Sato led him across the finish line under yellow. 

Sato's teammate, Graham Rahal (RAY'-hahl), was third.

DOVER, Del. (AP) — Kevin Harvick has regained the NASCAR Cup Series victory lead by dominating Sunday's race at Dover International Speedway.

A day after Denny Hamlin opened the doubleheader weekend with his sixth win to match Harvick and one-upped his closest rival to claim NASCAR's regular-season title. Harvick has 56 career Cup victories to tie Kyle Busch for ninth on the career list.

Martin Truex Jr. was second and Jimmie Johnson third. Johnson is on the bubble, four points outside of the cutoff with his fate to be decided under the lights at Daytona. 

NFL asks lab to check reliability of its COVID-19 tests

UNDATED (AP) — The NFL has asked a New Jersey lab to investigate a new batch of COVID-19 test results amid reports from several teams of false positives. The league didn't identify which teams got positive results, or how many there were. 

Among teams reporting false positives, the Minnesota Vikings said they had 12, the New York Jets 10 and the Chicago Bears nine. Other teams that were affected are the Buffalo Bills, Pittsburgh Steelers, Philadelphia Eagles and Cleveland Browns. 

— The Ravens have terminated the contract of seven-time Pro Bowl safety Earl Thomas. The action stems from Thomas' fray with defensive back Chuck Clark at Friday's practice after Thomas admittedly blew a coverage assignment. 

— Washington has released wideout Cody Latimer amid his legal issues before he practiced a single snap with the team. He was arrested in May and charged with a felony count of illegal discharge of a firearm. He also faces charges of second-degree assault, menacing, prohibited use of a weapon and reckless endangerment. 

NORTON, Mass. (AP) — Dustin Johnson played the final two holes in near darkness after a late storm delay and finished with a birdie for an 8-under 63 and an 11-shot victory over Harris English at The Northern Trust.

It was the 22nd victory of his PGA Tour career and fifth in a FedEx Cup playoffs event, tied with Rory McIlroy for most. Johnson finished at 30 under and returned to No. 1 in the world. 

304th-ranked Popov wins Women's British Open

TROON, Scotland (AP) — Sophia Popov became the first female golfer from Germany to capture a major title when she won the Women's British Open by two strokes at Royal Troon. 

Popov went into the final round with a three-shot lead. She bounced back from a first-hole bogey by making five birdies in her 3-under 68. Jasmine Suwannapura was the runner-up after shooting 67.

Popov is ranked No. 304 and dropped off the LPGA Tour last year. She hadn't previously won on the LPGA Tour, the second-tier Symetra Tour or on the Ladies European Tour.

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (AP) — Nick Nurse was close to quitting.

He was 26 or 27 years old, coaching in Britain and wondering whether he had a future in the profession. He went to his hotel room one night and wrote down a list of four other careers he could pursue if he went back home.

“So I figured I’d better get working on coaching and figure it out,” Nurse said.

Nurse never stopped believing he could get to the top, and he never considered he couldn’t stay there even after his best player left last summer.

The Toronto Raptors coach’s rise from the outskirts of basketball to the best of the NBA was recognized Saturday when he was overwhelmingly selected as Coach of the Year.

Nurse, who has the Raptors on the verge of the second round of the playoffs without Kawhi Leonard, was a runaway winner. He received 90 first-place votes from a panel of 100 sportswriters and broadcasters and finished with 470 points.

Milwaukee’s Mike Budenholzer was second after leading the Bucks to the best record in the suspended season, earning 147 points. Oklahoma City’s Billy Donovan (134) was third.

Nurse led Toronto to its first title last year in his rookie season, becoming the only coach to win an NBA championship and a G League championship. He won titles in 2011 and 2013 at the NBA’s minor league level.

Toronto’s celebration last year was just winding down when Leonard, the NBA Finals MVP, decided to join the Los Angeles Clippers. Nurse was in Las Vegas when he got the news. Many people assumed the Raptors would fall out of contention this year.

But Nurse was used to losing players who were called up to NBA teams. Just as he did then, he looked at it as a chance for players such as Pascal Siakam and Fred VanVleet to take big leaps.

“There’s guys clamoring for opportunity, there really is, on your team,” Nurse said. “They’re young and they’re developing and it ends up being a fortunate situation for some of those guys.”

The Raptors hardly missed a beat, rolling to a 53-19 record and the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference. They have a 3-0 lead over the Brooklyn Nets and will try to finish the sweep on Sunday.

Nurse is 111-43 in two seasons. He has more than validated the Raptors’ decision to fire Dwane Casey in 2018, even though Casey had been Coach of the Year that season after guiding Toronto to a 59-23 record.

But the Raptors kept getting overrun by LeBron James and Cleveland in the playoffs. So team president Masai Ujiri decided to part ways with Casey, the franchise’s career leader in victories, and promote Nurse, who had been an assistant for five years.

Nurse has already nearly caught Casey for the Raptors’ record for playoff wins by going 19-8 over the last two seasons. Casey was 21-30.

Ujiri praised Nurse for being hardworking yet relaxed.

“Always setting the tone for our team — attacking our next championship, rather than defending our last,” Ujiri said. “That is who Nick is, that is why we believe in him. His journey to this tremendous honor has been a long one. We are so happy to see him recognized this way.”

Nurse worked his way to the top through lower levels of basketball. The Northern Iowa graduate got his first head coaching job at Grand View College when he was 23, before becoming an assistant at South Dakota.

He coached 11 years in Europe, winning nine championships in the British Basketball League, before leading Rio Grande Valley and Iowa to G League titles, places where he could try out ideas he hoped someday could work in the NBA.

“Just love being around a team and trying to get guys to dream about success and help lead them there,” Nurse said.

Nurse finally arrived as an NBA head coach in 2018 and he’s been a natural.

He led the Raptors past the favored Bucks and Golden State Warriors last spring and then overcame Leonard’s departure, the season’s suspension and everything in between.

Toronto had a franchise-record .736 winning percentage this season, allowing the fewest points per game in the NBA, despite having its top five scorers all miss at least 10 games because of injury.

The Raptors put together a 15-game winning streak in January and February, and when the season stopped a month later, Toronto came back even better. The Raptors went 7-1 in the seeding games, best in the East.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Kwang Hyun Kim pitched six sharp innings and earned his first major league win as the St. Louis Cardinals blanked the Cincinnati Reds 3-0. Kim gave up three hits, walked none and struck out three. The 32-year-old left-hander signed with the Cardinals in the winter after going 136-77 over 12 seasons in South Korea. Cardinals relievers John Gant, Andrew Miller and Giovanny Gallegos combined for three innings. Gallegos earned his first save by retiring all four batters he faced. Cincinnati totaled only four hits after getting just two in a win the previous night at Busch Stadium.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Eddie Rosario hit a three-run homer, Miguel Sano homered and also drove in three runs, and the Twins beat the Royals 7-2 to even their series at a game apiece. Randy Dobnak pitched five innings of two-run ball, continuing his brilliant start to the season. The former undrafted free agent gave up a homer to Alex Gordon but otherwise kept dodging trouble on a hot, humid night at Kauffman Stadium. The Royals' Brady Singer (1-3) allowed four runs and six hits in four innings in his third straight start against Minnesota.

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) — The defending Stanley Cup champion St. Louis Blues were managing their pursuit of a repeat well, carrying the best record in the Western Conference with largely the same roster. Then the global pandemic put the NHL on pause. When the Blues reconvened in Edmonton, they found nothing but trouble in the bubble. St. Louis was eliminated in six games in the first round by the younger, faster and apparently hungrier Vancouver Canucks. The most offseason uncertainty for the Blues is the status of defenseman Alex Pietrangelo, who will be an unrestricted free agent.

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (AP) — Giannis Antetokounmpo (YAH'-nihs an-teh-toh-KOON'-poh) and the Milwaukee Bucks have a two-games-to-one lead following a 121-107 win over the Orlando Magic.

Antetokounmpo was unstoppable with the ball, scoring 35 points on 12 of 14 shooting. He also had 11 rebounds and seven assists for the Bucks, who seem to have righted the ship after dropping the series opener.

Khris Middleton added 17 points, eight boards and six assists to the win.

Bucks forward Marvin Williams and Magic forward James Ennis were tossed from the game following a second-quarter scuffle. The skirmish took place during a 13-0 run in which Milwaukee took control of the game.

D.J. Augustin scored 24 points for Orlando.

LeBron James had 38 points, 12 rebounds and eight assists as the Lakers knocked off the Trail Blazers, 116-108 to take a two-games-to-one lead.

Anthony Davis scored 12 of his 29 points in the fourth quarter to help Los Angeles win its second straight since a stunning loss in the opener. 

Portland guard Damian Lillard scored 34 points despite a dislocated left index finger. CJ McCollum added 28 for the Trail Blazers. They will try to even the series in Game 4 on Monday.

Also in the opening round, the Heat grabbed a three-games-to-none lead by building an 18-point, halftime lead before holding off the Pacers, 124-115.

The Thunder have pulled within two-games-to-one in their series by opening overtime on a 12-0 run before completing a 119-107 victory over the Rockets.

Chris Paul had 26 points, including a pair of three-pointers during Oklahoma City's overtime run. Dennis Schroeder (SHROO'-dur) was high man for the Thunder with 29 points.

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) — The Colorado Avalanche were able to blank the Dallas Stars in their round-robin meeting before the first round of the playoffs. Dallas got even on Saturday.

The Stars took the opener of their second-round series by downing the Avalanche, 5-3. 

Alexander Radulov (RAD'-yoo-lahv) had two goals and an assist, giving Dallas a 3-1 lead in the first period and scoring the eventual game-winner midway through the second.

Tyler Seguin opened the scoring four minutes into the contest. Blake Comeau put the Stars ahead to stay midway through the first.

Nathan MacKinnon scored twice for the Avalanche, who finished the game without Philipp Grubauer. The Colorado netminder suffered a lower-body injury in the second period.

UNDATED (AP) — Mike Milbury is stepping away from broadcasting the rest of the NHL playoffs.

The decision comes after his on-air comment that there were no women in the league's quarantined bubble to disrupt concentration drew widespread criticism. 

The former player, coach and general manager released a statement through NBC Sports, saying: "I do not want my presence to interfere with the athletes as they try to win the greatest trophy in sports." 

An NBC Sports spokesman confirmed it was Milbury's decision to leave and that the analyst remains employed by the network.

Strasburg is done for season, awaits hand surgery

UNDATED (AP) — The Washington Nationals have put star pitcher Stephen Strasburg on the 60-day disabled list, ending his season. Nationals manager Dave Martinez says the right-hander will undergo carpal tunnel surgery next week. 

The 32-year-old signed a seven-year, $245 million contract with Washington during the offseason. He was 0-1 with a 10.80 ERA in two starts in 2020.

— No additional members of the Mets have tested positive for COVID-19 since the team learned of two infections that caused several games to be postponed, including their weekend series with the Yankees. Test results also were negative for close contacts of those who stayed back in Miami after Thursday's series finale against the Marlins was postponed. 

— Yankees shortstop Gleyber Torres is expected to miss two to three weeks while recovering from strains in his hamstring and quad. The club also said pitcher James Paxton won't throw for 14 days because of a strained left forearm.

— The Twins have added two more pitchers to their injured list. Jake Odorizzi is sidelined with bruised ribs and fellow right-hander Zack Littell is shut down because of right elbow inflammation. Both players were hurt during Friday's 7-2 loss to the Royals.

Browns CB Johnson released from hospital after liver injury

UNDATED (AP) — The Cleveland Browns say cornerback Kevin Johnson has been released from the hospital and is doing well after suffering a lacerated liver in practice this week.

The 28-year-old is expected to be back at the team's facility in the next few days. He'll have to go through COVID-19 protocols before he can be re-integrated into team activities. The Browns said his status will be evaluated on a "week by week basis."

Johnson was injured when he was landed on by rookie tight end Harrison Bryant as the two were battling for a pass during a red-zone drill.

In another positive development for the Browns, Pro Bowl running back Nick Chubb returned to practice Saturday on a limited basis after sustaining a concussion earlier this week. 

— Dolphins quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick returned to practice Saturday after a one-day absence for personal reasons. NORTON, Mass. (AP) — Dustin Johnson closed with birdie-eagle for a 7-under 64 and a five-stroke advantage through three rounds of The Northern Trust, the FexEx Cup playoffs opener.

Johnson was coming off a remarkable day in which he was 11 under through 11 holes and finished with seven pars for a 60. On Saturday, he pulled away from Harris English and Scottie Scheffler with a 20-foot birdie putt on the 17th and a 40-footer for eagle on the closing hole at the TPC Boston.

Johnson was at 22-under 191, his lowest 54-hole score by three shots.

Popov takes 3-shot lead into final round of British Open

TROON, Scotland (AP) — Sophia Popov takes a three-stroke lead into the final round of the Women's British Open as she goes for her first major title. 

Popov shot a bogey-free, 4-under 67 to tie the low score of the third round at Royal Troon. The 27-year-old German was 4 under par overall and one of just three players under par after 54 holes. Minjee Lee of Australia and Jasmine Suwannapura of Thailand were the other two after both shot 69 to be tied for second place on 1 under. 

DOVER, Del (AP) — Denny Hamlin zipped past teammate Martin Truex Jr. with less than 10 laps to go and won Saturday's NASCAR Cup Series race at Dover International Speedway.

Hamlin matched Kevin Harvick for the season victory lead with six, equaling his total from last season and closing within two of his career high set in 2010.

Truex snapped a streak of five straight third-place finishes and ended up second. It's his sixth straight top-10 finish.

Kyle Busch was third to make it a sweep of the top three spots for Joe Gibbs Racing. Harvick was fourth and Chase Elliott fifth.

Moses named 1st Black track president in NASCAR history

DOVER, Del. (AP) — Erik Moses has been named president of Nashville Superspeedway, the first Black man to hold that title at any NASCAR track.

Strasburg was put on the injured list on Aug. 15, a day after he recorded just two outs at Baltimore.
