3 MLB games postponed, players decide after Kenosha shooting

RIDGEDALE, Mo. (AP) — Phil Mickelson chose to make his PGA Tour Champions debut at Ozarks National this week so he could avoid a two-week break right in the middle of his preparations for the U.S. Open at Winged Foot.

If he was going to show up, Mickelson thought, he might as well win.

He closed with a 5-under 66 on Wednesday to reach 22 under, leaving him three shots clear of Tim Petrovic. The wire-to-wire victory made Mickelson the 20th player to win on the 50-and-over-tour in his debut, not to mention gave him some much-needed confidence after a missed cut at The Northern Trust knocked him from the FedEx Cup Playoffs.

“I really enjoyed playing here, enjoyed seeing the guys again, and they were so accommodating and fun, and it was just fun for me to compete,” said Mickelson, who plans to take 10 days off before heading to the Safeway Open for what he hopes is his final U.S. Open prep. “I got to shoot scores and compete. The competition here was really strong. It was good for me to get off to a good start and compete.”

The three-round tournament in the Ozarks of southwest Missouri may prove to be even more important if the wildfires are still raging in California. The Safeway Open will take place at Silverado in Napa, and Mickelson expressed the same fear as tournament organizers that the event could be affected.

Regardless of whether he tees it up again, Mickelson’s game sure looked sharp as he heads toward the U.S. Open.

He began the final round, which was moved up to an earlier start because of approaching bad weather, with a birdie on the first hole. He added another at the fourth before driving the par-4 fifth — “Gosh darn it!” he yelled, thinking his drive had ended up in the green-side bunker — and rolling in a 25-footer for an eagle.

Mickelson added three straight birdies, making the turn to reach 23 under and putting the 54-hole scoring record on the PGA Tour Champions in danger. David Frost shot 25 under at the 2010 3M Championship.

But after stringing together a few pars, a three-putt bogey on the 14th ended that thought, and it left Petrovic just three shots out of the lead. The longtime journeyman had reached 19 under with a birdie on the 14th and was starting to provide the kind of pressure that Mickelson had not faced all week.

Petrovic wasn’t able to make another birdie, though, and he dropped a shot after a poor pitch on the par-4 finishing hole.

“You know, sometimes you just run into a buzz saw,” Petrovic said. “I ran into a Phil buzz saw this week because he made a lot of birdies. I think yesterday I shot 31 on the front and I don’t think I picked up as hot, maybe one. Today I got it going again on the front and we were almost laughing. When he was on the front, he drove that part-4 — you know, he said it’s like, 340 (yards) in the air to make eagle. We’re like: ‘OK, all right. That’s enough.’”

The performance left the regulars on the PGA Tour Champions with some mixed feelings. They loved having the affable Mickelson playing with them this week, just like the old days, not only for the competition but also for the added exposure it brought the tournament — a late add to the schedule because of the coronavirus pandemic.

They also would rather not see him anytime soon if he’s going to flirt with some more scoring records.

“Who was going to be good enough this week with that rat here?” Rocco Mediate asked. “It’s so cool to have him out. We played a practice round on Sunday (and) it actually helped me play good because you go out and play with Phil or play against Phil, you’ve got to have it. It was fun to play a good practice round having to play because I kept on carrying it.”

Kevin Sutherland closed with a 63 to finish third at 16 under. Robert Karlsson was another shot back while Mediate was joined by Steve Stricker at 14 under, a full eight shots behind the new guy on the scene.

“This isn’t surprising whatsoever, anything he does,” Mediate said. “Him and Tiger (Woods), the same thing: Nothing they do surprises you. And you’re seeing it here. I don’t know how many under he is, but it’s easier said than done to come out here, you’re supposed to win. We’re really good out here, he knows that. And he’s done it, that’s pretty cool.”

Mickelson gets wire-to-wire win in PGA Tour Champions debut

LOS ANGELES, Cal (AP) — Vin Scully sat outside watching two sets of his golf clubs being loaded into a truck. He thought of afternoons teeing off at Bel-Air Country Club or with President George H.W. Bush.

Those left-handed clubs had produced a lot of shots over many rounds, some good, some bad. Traipsing the fairways was a way to relax and swap stories away from the ballpark through the years. Seeing them go stirred emotion that surprised the 92-year-old Hall of Fame announcer.

“Wow, there is a chapter of my life that really hurts,” Scully told The Associated Press, “but at my age and after some physical problems, I knew I’d never be able to hold them again. I heard a door close in my life.”

Scully took a bad fall in April at the end of his driveway while retrieving the mail, breaking his nose and ribs and suffering a concession.

“It was a learning experience,” he said. “I hold on to my walker.”

He’s decided to let go in another way, though. The retired Los Angeles Dodgers broadcaster has culled items from his personal collection of memorabilia for auction on Sept. 23. Internet bidding begins Friday at huntauctions.com.

The auction was originally scheduled for All-Star weekend in Los Angeles in July but was moved online when the game was canceled because of the coronavirus pandemic.

“He has such a special meaning to so many people,” said David Hunt, owner of Hunt Auctions in Exton, Pennsylvania.

Bats, balls, baseball cards, award plaques and trophies. World Series rings. The spiral-bound scorebook from his final season in 2016. They represent the physical remnants of his 67 years with the Dodgers, from Brooklyn to Los Angeles.

“I would much rather treasure the memories,” said Scully, the longest tenured broadcaster with a single team in pro sports history.

Most of the 310 lots were kept behind glass doors in a trophy cabinet at Scully’s Los Angeles-area home. Awards covered one wall in the room that visitors clamored to see.

“It’s not just a collection of cold, inanimate objects,” Scully said. “There are things that mean a great deal to me, but now it’s time to let someone else treasure them.”

— 30 lots related to U.S. presidents, including the elder Bush, Ronald Reagan and Barack Obama. There’s a book about Theodore Roosevelt signed by him in 1910 and given to Scully’s father, who worked in the president’s New York law office. “I’ve always thought what a trip this book has taken,” Scully said. He and Bush played college baseball against each other, Scully at Fordham and Bush at Yale. Years later, while walking off the golf course, Scully told him: “As long as you’re in the White House, you can say anything you want about your baseball career, but remember we both went 0 for 3.” Bush’s response? “He just howled,” Scully said.

— A letter from Red Barber, who recruited his fellow redhead into the Dodgers booth and mentored him. Having lost his own father at 4, Scully revered Barber. In his second year, Scully proclaimed Willie Mays as the best player he’d ever seen. Off the air, Barber told him, “Young man, you have not been around long enough to talk about the best player you’ve ever seen.” Scully recalled, “He was going to make me a good announcer or be darned.”

— Several plaques noting Scully as a finalist for national sportscaster of the year. “I put them up for humility to remind me, ‘Hey, I was in the race but I didn’t make it,’” he said. Of course, he was the winner many years.

— A “battered and bruised” scrapbook of newspaper clippings about his career from the 1950s, compiled by his mother. “She was a great red-haired lady with a terrific laugh,” he said.

— A worn brown leather folio containing his scorebooks. Inside are taped some of his favorite poems and lyrics. “A member of Bel-Air Country Club who was in the leather industry made it for me,” he said.

Scully and his wife, Sandra, plan to use some of the auction proceeds to help their five children, 16 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren with expenses that include parochial school tuition.

“It seemed to be the right time to help everybody,” he said. “We’re trying to do as much as possible before I hopefully go to heaven.”

The auction is a way to avoid the possibility of future family squabbles over keepsakes. “I didn’t want to cause bad feelings among great kids,” Scully said.

The rest of the proceeds will be donated to UCLA for neuromuscular research. Scully said his wife suffers from a condition related to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, the incurable disease that forced Yankees great Lou Gehrig to retire at 36.

“It’s ironic she has something like that named after Lou Gehrig,” he said.

Four years into retirement, Scully is content staying close to home. His dulcet voice is still heard at Dodger Stadium, most recently narrating a video marking the late Kobe Bryant’s birthday. Scully recorded it in one take, as seamlessly as he spun stories behind the mic for nearly 70 years.

“I can look back and enjoy it and not have any regrets,” he said.

ORLANDO, Fla. – NBC Sports and Excel Sports Management announced today the Payne’s Valley Cup, a special 18-hole charity team exhibition match headlined by four of the World’s top golfers to commemorate the grand opening of Payne’s Valley Golf Course at Big Cedar Lodge in Ridgedale, Mo. Payne’s Valley represents the first public golf course design for 82-time PGA TOUR winner&nbsp;Tiger Woods, who will team up with World No. 3&nbsp;Justin Thomas&nbsp;(Team United States) to take on major champions&nbsp;Rory McIlroy&nbsp;and&nbsp;Justin Rose&nbsp;(Team Europe) in the Payne’s Valley Cup.

Airing live on GOLF Channel on Tuesday, Sept. 22 (3-7 p.m. ET), the Payne’s Valley Cup will feature an entertaining mix of some of the best competition formats seen during Ryder Cups and Presidents Cups: Fourball, Foursomes and Singles matches. NBC will televise a special encore as two separate telecasts on Dec. 26 and 27 from 4-6 pm ET. The four players competing in the Payne’s Valley Cup have an eclectic resume: all four have been World No. 1; are major champions, all have won the FedExCup and have been part of victorious Ryder Cup teams.

The dramatic series of moves began when the Bucks — the NBA’s team from Wisconsin, a state rocked in recent days by the shooting by police officers of Jacob Blake, a Black man — didn’t take the floor for their game against the Magic.

The teams were set to begin Game 5 of their series shortly after 4 p.m. EST, with the Bucks needing a win to advance to the second round. Players had been discussing boycotting games in the bubble after the shooting of Jacob Blake, a Black man, by police in Kenosha, Wisconsin. 

More discussions were expected Wednesday, but even before that the Bucks apparently decided they would act. Magic players and referees were on the floor for the game but Milwaukee never took the floor.&nbsp; Former Kansas Jayhawk Frank Mason, is a member of the Bucks.&nbsp;

Following the Bucks decision, the other two playoff games Houston vs. Oklahoma City and Los Angeles vs. Portland have been postponed, according to the NBA.

IRVING, Texas –&nbsp;The American Athletic Conference announced today that it will postpone all competition and conference championships in the sports of men's and women's soccer and women's volleyball until the spring of 2021 to align with the NCAA championship season. A decision regarding cross country competition will be forthcoming pending further NCAA clarification. The decision was approved by the conference's athletic directors and senior woman administrators following the NCAA Division I Board of Directors' confirmation that NCAA Division I fall championships would move to the spring. Nuggets stay alive, Clippers clobber Mavs

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (AP) — The Denver Nuggets were 12 minutes away from elimination from the NBA Playoffs before extending their season on Tuesday.

Jamal Murray scored 33 of his 42 points while playing every minute of the second half to guide the Nuggets to a 117-107 win over the Utah Jazz in Game 5. Murray hit 17 of 26 shots and had eight assists, including a pass to Nikola Jokic (nih-KOH'-lah YOH'-kihch) for a 3-pointer with 23.6 seconds remaining that sealed the win.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — The NHL has fined Columbus Blue Jackets coach John Tortorella $25,000 for his conduct during a media session after his team was eliminated from the playoffs.

Following the Tampa Bay Lightning's Game 5 victory over the Blue Jackets, Tortorella ended his video news conference after two questions and walked away.

UNDATED (AP) — Penn State linebacker Micah Parsons and Oregon tackle Penei Sewell are among 11 players selected to The Associated Press preseason All-America first-team team who will not be playing this fall. 

Voters considered all Division I players, even those who had already opted out of the season or whose teams had postponed football. 

Another 12 second-team All-Americans will not be playing in the fall, including Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields.

Family of late New Mexico lineman sues former coach, school

RIO RANCHO, N.M. (AP) — A lawsuit filed in federal court alleges the University of New Mexico, former football coach Bob Davie and the NCAA didn't protect 21-year-old Nahje Flowers, who died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound in November. 

The suit alleges that Davie ignored a player's plea for help in his fight against depression and instead made the lineman play a game before he took his own life.

Court documents said the defensive standout had sought counseling to fight depression, but Davie overruled a therapist's recommendation that Flowers take some time off. 

UNDATED (AP) — Cleveland Browns rookie safety Grant Delpit ruptured his right Achilles tendon and is out for the season. The team also announced Delpit will need surgery.

Delpit is the third Browns defensive starter to sustain a significant injury in the past week, along with linebacker Mack Wilson and nickel back Kevin Johnson. 

The Browns selected Delpit in the second round out of LSU. 

— The Lions decided not to practice on Tuesday, protesting after a Black man was shot by police in Wisconsin. — Two-time Pro Bowl safety Budda Baker has agreed to terms on a four-year, $59 million, four-year contract extension with the Cardinals. Baker's agent David Mulugheta confirmed the terms and that $33.1 million is guaranteed. 

— Vikings linebacker Cameron Smith's surgery to repair an enlarged heart has gone as planned. Smith's genetic defect was discovered earlier this month, only after a false positive COVID-19 test. Coach Mike Zimmer said Smith was "in good shape" after the procedure Monday in Philadelphia.
