UNDATED (AP) — NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell is warning the league's 32 teams of penalties including potential forfeits of games for violations of COVID-19 protocols that force changes in the schedule. In a memo sent to the teams and obtained by The Associated Press, Goodell reiterated the need to adhere fully to all of the league's health and safety guidelines. The NFL was forced to adjust its Week 4 schedule when Tennessee had the league's first coronavirus outbreak and New England and Kansas City each had a player test positive. The league is now requiring a longer onboarding process for free agent tryouts, banning gatherings outside of the club facility, limiting the number of tryouts permitted per week and implementing a league-wide video monitoring system to ensure compliance.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Kansas State coach Chris Klieman agreed to a contract extension through the 2026 season on Monday that includes additional incentives and retention bonuses, despite a pandemic that forced the university to announce plans earlier this year to furlough up to 1,500 faculty and staff. Klieman will be paid base salaries of $3.1 million next season, $3.5 million in 2022, $4 million in 2023 and $4.3 million each year from 2024 to 2026. There are also retention bonuses of $200,000 in 2021 and $250,000 in 2022, the use of a private plane for up to 8 hours and one-year extensions at $4.3 million each year for winning eight games in a season.

Yankees, Astros cruise to series-opening win

UNDATED (AP) — Both the New York Yankees and Houston Astros are 3-0 this postseason after taking Game 1 of their respective AL Division Series.

The Yankees banged out four home runs in a 9-3 smashing of the Rays. Tampa Bay led 3-2 until Kyle Higashioka and Aaron Judge belted solo shots off Tampa Bay starter and loser Blake Snell in the fifth inning. 

The Yanks put it out of reach with a five-run ninth capped by Giancarlo Stanton's grand slam. 

Clint Frazier also hit a solo blast and Aaron Hicks went 3-for-4 with two RBIs for New York.

Gerrit Cole struck out eight and allowed three runs over six innings, including homers by Randy Arozarena and Ji-Man Choi.

In Los Angeles, Carlos Correa homered twice and had four RBIs in the Astros' 10-5 rout of the Athletics. The A's led 5-3 in the sixth until George Springer laced an RBI double and scored on Jose Altuve's (al-TOO'-vayz) two-run single. 

Houston plated four in the sixth following an error by shortstop Marcus Semien with two out and nobody on.

Alex Bregman also homered for the Astros, who entered the postseason after compiling a losing record.

Khris Davis, Sean Murphy and Matt Olson homered for the Athletics, who will try to even the series on Tuesday.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Philadelphia Phillies first baseman Rhys Hoskins had Tommy John surgery on his left elbow last week.

The team says he's expected to return to play in four to six months.

Hoskins injured his ulnar collateral ligament when his non-throwing arm collided with a baserunner on Sept. 12 against Miami.

UNDATED (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs had to wait an extra day to face the New England Patriots, but it was worth it.

The Chiefs shut down a sputtering offense in a 26-10 win over the Patriots. New England had to play without former MVP quarterback Cam Newton, who was sidelined after contracting COVID-19. Brian Hoyer was ineffective for almost three full quarters before being replaced by Jarrett Stidham, who led a touchdown drive to put the Pats within 13-10. 

New England also played without top running back Sony Michel due to a quad injury.

Like the Chiefs, the Green Bay Packers are 4-0 following a 30-16 win over the Atlanta Falcons. 

Aaron Rodgers passed for 327 yards and tossed three of his four TD passes to Robert Tonyan. The Packers QB has thrown for 13 touchdowns without an interception this year.

The Packers have opened the season scoring 30 points in each of their first four games for the first time in team history.

Todd Gurley's two touchdown runs couldn't stop the Falcons from their first 0-4 start since 1999, when they followed a Super Bowl season by going 5-11.

NEW YORK (AP) — NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has warned the league's 32 teams of penalties including potential forfeits of games for violations of COVID-19 protocols that force changes in the regular-season schedule.

Goodell wrote in the memo obtained by The Associated Press that "compliance is mandatory" and that teams need to recommit to protocols and best practices for the duration of the season.

The NFL was forced to reschedule Sunday's game between the Steelers and Titans when Tennessee had the league's first coronavirus outbreak, which has affected 20 organization members, including 10 players. That game was moved to Week 7, causing adjustments that also impacted the Baltimore Ravens.

Texans fire coach Bill O'Brien after 0-4 start

UNDATED (AP) — Houston Texans coach and general manager Bill O'Brien has been fired. 

The firing comes after Sunday's loss to the Vikings dropped the Texans to 0-4 for the first time since 2008. 

After assuming the role of general manager in the offseason, O'Brien received almost universal criticism when he shipped superstar receiver DeAndre Hopkins to Arizona for running back David Johnson and draft picks. 

O'Brien was in his seventh season in Houston where he compiled a 100-52 record. He won the AFC South four times in his tenure, including the past two years.

— Cleveland powerful Pro Bowl running back Nick Chubb will miss "several weeks" with a sprained ligament in his right knee. Chubb injured his MCL in the first quarter of Sunday's 49-38 win over the Cowboys, moving the Browns to 3-1 for the first time in 19 years.

Former FSU coach Bobby Bowden, 90, tests positive for virus

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Former Florida State coach Bobby Bowden has tested positive for the coronavirus. Family friend and Bowden's former publicist Kim Shiff says the 90-year-old Bowden had been hospitalized in Tallahassee, Florida, for about two weeks. He returned home late last week and was informed he had tested positive. 

Bowden told the Tallahassee Democrat on Monday he had not exhibited symptoms of COVID-19. 

Bowden coached Florida State for 34 years and is second on the career victories list in major college football behind the late Joe Paterno of Penn State.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The Philadelphia 76ers have introduced Doc Rivers as their coach. Rivers takes over as the 25th head coach in 76ers history after a seven-season run as coach of the Los Angeles Clippers. 

Rivers said coaching All-Stars Joel Embiid (joh-EHL' ehm-BEED') and Ben Simmons made the job too good to pass up. Rivers won an NBA championship with the Boston Celtics in 2008. With the Clippers, he twice lost playoff series after taking a 3-1 lead. 

Oilers star McDavid tests positive for COVID-19

UNDATED (AP) — Edmonton Oilers star Connor McDavid has tested positive for COVID-19.

The team says the 23-year-old forward is self-quarantining at home and experiencing mild symptoms.

McDavid is widely considered the best player in the NHL after being taken first overall in the 2015 draft. The captain of the Oilers had 34 goals and 97 points in 64 games during the pandemic-shortened season.

The NHL made it through its postseason in bubbles in Toronto and Edmonton without one positive test in August and September.

— The Wild have traded goalie Devan Dubnyk (DOOB'-nihk) and forward Ryan Donato to the Sharks for draft picks, in separate deals. Dubnyk is coming off his worst season since joining the Wild, going 12-15-2 with a 3.35 goals-against average and an .890 save percentage. Donato is a solid two-way, third-line center who had 14 goals, 23 points and a plus-5 in 62 games last season.

— Longtime NHL defenseman Matt Niskanen is retiring with one year left on his contract with the Flyers. The 33-year-old Niskanen had eight goals and 33 points in 68 games for Philadelphia this past season. The Flyers followed Niskanen's decision by signing blueliner Justin Braun to a two-year contract with an average annual value of $1.8 million. 

— The Penguins have placed 33-year-old defenseman Jack Johnson on waivers so it can buy out the remaining three years of the deal he signed with the club in 2018. Johnson has struggled to keep pace with faster forwards during his tenure in Pittsburgh.

— The Maple Leafs have signed center Jason Spezza (SPEHT'-suh) to a one-year, $700,000 contract. It marks the second straight one-year deal at the NHL minimum with the Leafs for the 37-year-old Toronto native. Spezza had nine goals and 25 points in 58 regular-season games with Toronto last season.

PARIS (AP) — Novak Djokovic (JOH'-koh-vihch) has reached the French Open quarterfinals for the 11th consecutive year, extending his own Open-era record at the tournament. The top-seeded Djokovic faced his toughest challenge yet this year at Roland Garros but still won rather easily against No. 15 seed Karen Khachanov, taking the last four games to close out a 6-4, 6-3, 6-3 match.

Djokovic has won all 12 sets he's played in Paris this year and dropped a total of only 25 games so far. He lost five games in each of his first three matches.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court is allowing a class-action lawsuit to proceed from minor league baseball players who allege they are being paid less than minimum wage. 

The lawsuit involves minor league players in Arizona, California and Florida. The justices offered no comment Monday in rejecting Major League Baseball's appeal. 

The players first sued major league teams in February 2014, claiming most earn less than $7,500 annually in violation of several laws.

HOUSTON (AP) — The Houston Texans had faith that coach Bill O’Brien was the man to lead them to their first championship.

So much faith in fact that they made the unusual move of making him the team’s general manager this off-season, too.

But O’Brien didn’t perform well in either role, leading to his firing on Monday.

He was let go a day after Sunday’s 31-23 loss to the Vikings dropped the Texans to 0-4 for the first time since 2008.

“In this business, it’s a bottom-line business and we weren’t able to get it to where we needed to get it,” O’Brien said.

After becoming the general manager, O’Brien received almost universal criticism when he shipped superstar receiver DeAndre Hopkins to Arizona for running back David Johnson and draft picks.

Asked to reflect on some of his personnel decisions, O’Brien said he had no regrets.

“Every decision we made was always in the best interest of the team,” he said. “We had long conversations. We put a lot of research into them. There were things that happened within the walls of an organization that the outside public will really never know. And that’s just the way it is.”

The pressure on O’Brien only intensified as the Texans limped out to the terrible start with Johnson struggling as their running game was the worst in the NFL and with the defense allowing the most yards in the league.

O’Brien was in his seventh season in Houston where he compiled a 52-48 record. He won the AFC South four times in his tenure, including the past two years.

He came to Houston after spending 2012-13 as the coach at Penn State. The Texans job was his first NFL head coaching job, but he spent 2007-2011 working for coach Bill Belichick in New England, rising to the role of offensive coordinator in his last season.

Team owner Cal McNair announced the decision Monday and thanked O’Brien for his work with the team.

“Bill’s leadership moved our organization forward as he guided us to four AFC South division championships, 52 wins and multiple playoff appearances during his tenure,” McNair said in a statement. “Bill proved himself as a coach and leader in this league. I spoke with him earlier today and told him we are moving in a different direction.”

O’Brien repeatedly thanked the McNair family for the chance to coach the Texans and apologized for falling below their expectations.

“I told him ... I’m sorry that we couldn’t get this team over the hump, couldn’t get over the hump last year, year before, but obviously early on this year,” he said. “But it wasn’t from lack of effort. We did win four division championships here that we’re very proud of ... so we did a lot of good things here, but we didn’t do enough.”

Romeo Crennel, who was the team’s assistant head coach, will serve as interim coach for the rest of the season.

“We have a talented team and I have no doubt our players and staff will rally to make Texans fans proud as we aim to win championships and do great things for the city of Houston,” McNair said.

Before the trade of Hopkins and Houston’s winless start this season, O’Brien came under fire last season for the team’s performance in the playoffs.

The Texans were up 24-0 in the first quarter against the Kansas City Chiefs and looked to be headed for their first AFC championship game, which they would have hosted. Instead they squandered the huge early lead in the 51-31 loss to the eventual Super Bowl champs.

It was just the latest playoff letdown for a team which lost in the wild-card round under O’Brien in 2015 and 2018 and also lost in the divisional round in 2016.

“I understand we fell short in terms of taking this team further in the playoffs,” O’Brien said. “But I do leave knowing that myself and the staff gave everything this organization deserved and more. We worked very, very hard to try to get this to a place where it could be it could be a championship program. We just didn’t get it done.”

The 50-year-old O’Brien believes he earned valuable experience in his time in Houston that will help him in the future as he looks for his next job.

“I want to coach,” he said. “I love coaching. I love the players, the relationships with the players, the assistant coaches. I think football is the ultimate team game, so I really there’s no doubt in my mind that I want to coach again.”

He raved about the players and said although he won’t be a part of it, he’s confident this squad led by Deshaun Watson and J.J. Watt is capable of reaching the ultimate goal.

“We didn’t bring a Super Bowl to Houston, which I believe eventually someone will,” he said. “I think this is a championship team that needs to get things turned around right now. But I believe in this team.”

Only two teams completed play in the second round on Monday. Ten teams and 48 golfers must complete their second round at 9 a.m. CT on Tuesday. Hutchinson has just one hole to complete. CSU-Pueblo and Texas A&amp;M International, the two teams above the Blue Dragons in the team standings, both have five holes to complete.

Once the second round concludes, the third and final round will begin with a shotgun start scheduled for 10 a.m. CT

Through the first 11 holes of the opening round on Monday at Walking Stick Golf Course – the Blue Dragons starting assignment was the fourth hole – Hutchinson was 2-over par and tied for sixth place. Later on Saturday, it same out that Chiefs practice squad QB Jordan Ta’amu also had tested positive, forcing the NFL to postpone the game.

More tests, including one taken at 6 a.m. ET on Monday, returned&nbsp;<a href="https://pro32.ap.org/article/ap-source-pats-chiefs-all-clear-no-positives-titans" target="_blank">no additional positives</a>&nbsp;from either team.

In retrospect, the Patriots (2-2) probably wish the game was delayed even longer so they could get their QB back.

Brian Hoyer, who has now lost 11 straight starts for three different teams, was 15 of 24 for 130 yards and an interception before getting benched. Jarrett Stidham led the Patriots to a touchdown to close to 13-10, but he also threw two interceptions, including the pick-six to Mathieu that propelled the Chiefs to their fourth straight 4-0 start.

With the musical chairs at quarterback and the loss of Michel, who was&nbsp;<a href="https://pro32.ap.org/article/patriots-without-rb-michel-vs-chiefs-monday-night" target="_blank">placed on injured reserve</a>&nbsp;with a quad issue earlier in the day, the Patriots turned to a scaled-back and run-heavy approach designed to keep them in the game.

Much of the way, coach Bill Belichick’s simple plan worked.

The Chiefs marched downfield for a field goal on their first drive, added another later in the half, but otherwise had a hard time getting into gear. Sammy Watkins wasted a scoring chance by fumbling in the red zone, Mahomes was under constant duress and the rest of his wide receivers were blanketed by the New England secondary.

In fact, the Patriots could have been leading had Hoyer not made two monumental mistakes.

The first came in the closing seconds of the first half, when the Patriots had used their timeouts to drive into field-goal range. Hoyer was sacked by Frank Clark on third down, and the 40-year-old journeyman didn’t realize he couldn’t stop the clock. It hit zero and the Chiefs took a 6-3 lead into the locker room.

Hoyer’s second mistake came late in the third quarter, when he again felt the pocket collapse on a third-down play. This time, the Chiefs stripped the ball loose and recovered it, keeping New England from another field-goal attempt.

Give the Chiefs enough chances and they’ll usually close it out.

Finally taking advantage of a swing in momentum, Mahomes hit Hill and Travis Kelce with long passes to move swiftly downfield. And when Hill took a jet sweep to the pylon for a touchdown, the Chiefs had some breathing room.

The Patriots answered behind a long run from Damien Harris, who had just been activated off IR, and a nifty catch by N’Keal Harry in the end zone. But the Chiefs kept moving on offense, taking advantage of pass interference and personal foul penalties by the least-flagged team in the league to set up Hardman’s touchdown.

When Mathieu was perfectly positioned to catch a tipped pass and take it to the house, the Chiefs were headed toward a winning start to a grueling stretch of three games in 11 days that includes a visit to the Buffalo Bills.

MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;– K-State Athletics and head coach&nbsp;Chris Klieman&nbsp;have agreed to terms on a contract extension that runs through the 2026 football season, Athletics Director&nbsp;Gene Taylor&nbsp;announced today. Klieman, who led the Wildcats to eight wins and a bowl berth in his first season at K-State, is one of the winningest active head coaches in the country (82-19) and has continued to elevate the Wildcat program in just one-plus seasons at the helm. Under the terms of the new contract, Klieman will be paid an annual base salary of $3.1 million in 2021, $3.5 million in 2022, $4 million in 2023, $4.3 million in 2024, $4.3 million in 2025 and $4.3 million in 2026. The contract calls for several new incentives which includes retention bonuses in 2021 and 2022 and also additional years added for winning eight or more regular season games in a season. "Chris and his staff have done a phenomenal job in their short time at K-State, and we are excited that he will be here for a very long time," Taylor said. "We had been in discussions for an extended period of time, but certainly with sensitivity surrounding the COVID pandemic, we wanted to wait and finalize this contract once we were back to playing football and had some sense of certainty about the season. Chris is a tremendous fit, someone who cares a great deal about his players, and most importantly, he and his staff are terrific football coaches and we look forward to many more years under his leadership." MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;– K-State Athletics and head coach&nbsp;Chris Klieman&nbsp;have agreed to terms on a contract extension that runs through the 2026 football season, Athletics Director&nbsp;Gene Taylor&nbsp;announced today. Klieman, who led the Wildcats to eight wins and a bowl berth in his first season at K-State, is one of the winningest active head coaches in the country (82-19) and has continued to elevate the Wildcat program in just one-plus seasons at the helm. Under the terms of the new contract, Klieman will be paid an annual base salary of $3.1 million in 2021, $3.5 million in 2022, $4 million in 2023, $4.3 million in 2024, $4.3 million in 2025 and $4.3 million in 2026. The contract calls for several new incentives which includes retention bonuses in 2021 and 2022 and also additional years added for winning eight or more regular season games in a season. "Chris and his staff have done a phenomenal job in their short time at K-State, and we are excited that he will be here for a very long time," Taylor said. "We had been in discussions for an extended period of time, but certainly with sensitivity surrounding the COVID pandemic, we wanted to wait and finalize this contract once we were back to playing football and had some sense of certainty about the season. Hutchinson Community College men's cross country runner&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mxc/2020-21/bios/flanagan_teagan_iz8r">Teagan Flanagan</a>&nbsp;was named the Jayhawk Conference Men's Cross Country Runner of the Week on Monday.

After two near misses in his first two races of the season, Flanagan cruised to a 22-second victory in the Red Devil Invitational on Saturday in Iola.

Running his first 8,000-meter race of the season on Saturday, Flanagan took charge and posted a time of 25:07.00, the 11th-fastest 8K time in Blue Dragon history.

Flanagan helped the No. 2-ranked Blue Dragons to a runner-up finish at the Red Devil Invitational.

The sophomore from Kingman is the first Blue Dragon to earn league runner of the week honors since Andrew Kibet on September 24, 2019.

The Blue Dragons will compete on Friday at the Bethel Invitational on Friday in North Newton.

Butler recorded a triple-double of 40 points, 13 assists and 11 rebounds while playing 45 minutes of the Heat's 115-104 triumph over the Los Angeles Lakers. He was 14 for 20 from the field in the third 40-point triple-double in finals history.

Butler allowed Miami to pull within two games to one in the series.
