WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — Wichita State University is conducting an internal investigation into allegations that men's basketball coach Gregg Marshall mistreated players. Stadium, a multiplatform sports network, says the inquiry began after the university learned it was conducting an investigation in which it interviewed 36 players and former coaches. Wichita State said in a statement Friday that it "acknowledges the allegations within its Men's Basketball program brought forth by media" and that the investigation was being handled in an "expeditious and deliberate manner." MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Kansas State will open the season by hosting the inaugural Little Apple Classic. The four-team event features Colorado, Drake and South Dakota State. On the second day, Kansas State faces Colorado and Drake plays South Dakota State. The NCAA has delayed the start of the season to Nov. 25 due to the coronavirus pandemic. The Lightning simply could not afford to keep defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk, center Tyler Johnson and center Carter Verhaeghe. They play Saturday at 1-1 TCU, which is coming off its seventh win in nine years against Texas. LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (AP) — The Miami Heat will be playing some meaningful basketball this weekend.

The Heat have forced a sixth game in the NBA Finals, pulling within 3-2 in the series with a 111-108 triumph over the Los Angeles Lakers. Jimmy Butler delivered 35 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists in his second triple-double of the series. 

Butler played all but one minute and was doubled over near the scorer's table and the foul line in the final minute. He had enough strength to drive the lane, draw contact and drain two free throws with 16.8 seconds left for a 109-108 lead.

Los Angeles had another chance to go back on top, but Danny Green missed a 3-point attempt before Tyler Herro (HEE'-roh) finished it off with two free throws.

Duncan Robinson finished with 26 points and Kendrick Nunn had 14 off the bench as coach Erik Spoelstra (SPOHL'-struh) got the most out of a seven-man rotation.

LeBron James had a game-high 40 points to go with 13 boards and assists rebounds for L.A. James hit six 3-pointers, including a trey that sparked a 17-3 run in the final period after Miami lead by 11.

Anthony Davis and 28 points and 12 rebounds for the Lakers, who will try to wrap up their 17th championship on Sunday.

SAN DIEGO (AP) — The Tampa Bay Rays have earned the right to take on the Houston Astros in the American League Championship Series.

Mike Brosseau slammed a tiebreaking, solo homer in the bottom of the eighth to lift the Rays past the New York Yankees, 2-1. Brosseau supplied two of Tampa Bay's three hits after entering the game as a pinch-hitter in the sixth inning. The other hit was Austin Meadow's game-tying solo shot in the fifth.

The Yankees were also held to three hits, including a fourth-inning blast by Aaron Judge.

Diego Castillo worked two hitless innings of relief in getting the victory. He ended the game by getting Gio Urshela (ur-SHEH'-luh) to line out.

Aroldis Chapman served up Brosseau's home run and took the loss as the Yankees ended their season.

LAKE SUCCESS, N.Y. (AP) — Baseball has lost its Chairman of the Board.

New York Yankees great Whitey Ford has died at 91. A family member tells The Associated Press on Friday that Ford died at his Long Island home Thursday night. The cause was not known. 

Ford's .690 winning percentage was the best of any pitcher in the 20th century, going 236-106 in a 16-year career that began in 1950. He earned a major league-record 10 World Series victories, with eight coming between 1955 and 1961.

Ford was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1974 along with his best friend on the Yankees, Mickey Mantle. He had been the second-oldest living Hall of Fame member, behind only 92-year-old Tommy Lasorda.

The Yankees wore Ford's No. 16 on their left uniform sleeves for their final AL Division Series game against the Rays.

UNDATED (AP) — The New York Jets say they've received a clean bill of health.

The Jets have announced that all players and coaches have tested negative for COVID-19. The news comes after players and coaches were sent home from their training facility after a player received a presumptive positive coronavirus result. That player was retested later Friday.

The news means the 0-4 Jets can host the 2-2 Arizona Cardinals on Sunday as scheduled. 

Earlier in the day, the Tennessee Titans received some good news. A person familiar with the situation tells The Associated Press the Titans had no positive test results hours after the NFL rescheduled their game with Buffalo to Tuesday night. 

The Titans' outbreak currently is at 23, but now they have gone three of the past five days without a positive test. 

UNDATED (AP) — Jimmy Garoppolo will return as starting quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers this weekend after missing the past two games with a sprained ankle.

Coach Kyle Shanahan said Garoppolo will start Sunday at home against the Miami Dolphins. Shanahan wanted to see how Garoppolo made it through a full week of practice before making his decision.

— Cowboys Pro Bowl left tackle Tyron Smith is having season-ending neck surgery. It's another blow to a Dallas offensive line that will be without both starting tackles for the rest of the year. Smith injured the neck in practice the week after the opener and missed two games before returning for Sunday's loss to the Browns.

— Dolphins rookie left tackle Austin Jackson is going on injured reserve because of an ankle injury. The first-round draft pick will likely be replaced by Julie'n Davenport, who started eight games for Miami last year. Coach Brian Flores didn't rule out Jackson returning this season.

— Longtime Steelers offensive lineman and radio broadcaster Tunch Ilkin has been diagnosed with ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease. The 63-year-old Ilkin played 13 seasons in Pittsburgh from 1980-93. He joined the team's radio team in 1998 and currently serves as a color analyst.

The Caps signed goaltender 38-year-old Henrik Lundqvist to a one-year, $1.5 million contract to replace Braden Holtby. The Canucks signed Holtby to a two-year, two-year, $8.6 million deal after letting Jacob Markstrom leave in free agency.

Holtby struggled this past season, posting a career-high 3.11 goals-against average and a career-worst .897 save percentage.

Markstrom has fled Vancouver for a six-year, $36 package with the Flames. Markstrom compiled 23 wins, a 2.75 goals-against average and a .918 save percentage.

— Goaltender Cam Talbot is a former Flame after accepting a three, year, $11 million package with the Wild. Talbot appeared in 26 games for Calgary this past season, logging a 2.63 goals-against average and a .919 save percentage.

Rafael Nadal reaches 13th French Open final

Djokovic survived a roller coaster of momentum in what became a five-setter, blowing a two-sets-to-love lead before disposing of fifth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas. Djokovic wasted a match point in the third set before carving out a 6-3, 6-2, 5-7, 4-6, 6-1 victory to reach the French Open final for the fifth time.

SALINA, Kan. —Senior fullback Alec McCuan ran for 250 yards and three touchdowns, as the Salthawk offense relied on big plays to rack up over 400 rushing yards, and Hutch powered past Salina South, 42-17, Friday night at Salina Stadium. Hutch defeated South for the sixth consecutive time in the series to improve to 5-1 on the season. The Cougars dropped to 1-4.

Unlike the second half, Salina South was in control for the first 24 minutes. The Cougars took the opening kickoff and marched 59 yards down the field, 37 on a touchdown pass by sophomore quarterback Weston Fries to junior tailback Brandt Cox.

Hutch answered with a 16-play, 65-yard drive, which included a pair of fourth down conversions. McCuan scampered into the end zone from five yards out, knotting up the score at 7-7 with 1:52 left in the opening stanza.

The Salthawks would run just five plays for the remainder of the half. One resulted in an 83-yard TD run by McCuan to put Hutch on top 14-7 with 6:12 to play in the half.

Two other plays were turnovers, the last giving South the upperhand late in the half.

Before then, Salina South cashed in on a 13-play, 65-yard drive. Fries found senior receiver Colin Schreiber on a huge 4th and 8 deep in Hutch territory to keep the drive alive. Two plays later, he dropped a dime of a pass to sophomore Te’Jon McDaniel for a 20-yard score.

With three timeouts and 84 seconds left, the Salthawks had plenty of time to score. That’s when the turnover happened. Senior cornerback AJ Johnson ripped a pass away from the intended target, setting up Salina South at the Hutch 24-yard line. The Cougars couldn’t punch the ball into the endzone. Instead, they settled for a 29-yard field goal from freshman Kaden Budke to give South a 17-14 advantage at the break.

Hutch’s scored on four straight drives after turning the ball over on their first possession of the 2nd half – a resulted in Salthawk touchdowns. Hutch started with an 8-yard sweep to Noah Khokhar. Salina South answered by plunging inside the Hutch 15. Following an injury to Cox, the Cougars were unable to reach the goal line.

A 62-yard run by McCuan set up a six-yard score for the senior fullback late in the third. Khokhar found the end zone again, this time from 61 yards out. Senior quarterback Myles Thompson wrapped things up with a 17-yard scamper.

Hutch returns home to take on Haysville-Campus next Friday night at Gowans Stadium.

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Kansas coach Les Miles has tested positive for COVID-19 and is quarantining in his home, where he plans to fulfill his head coaching responsibilities remotely as the Jayhawks spend a week off before visiting West Virginia. Miles announced his positive test in a statement Thursday. The school did not say whether any other players or staff have tested positive, though the Jayhawks have had clusters of positive tests since the beginning of the season.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Clint Bowyer will retire at the end of the NASCAR season and join the Fox Sports booth as an analyst. Bowyer is in his 15th full season and heads into Sunday's race at Charlotte Motor Speedway facing elimination from the playoffs. In a two-page letter posted to Twitter on Thursday night, Bowyer said he's pursuing a new opportunity and will move into a full-time television job. Bowyer is a popular veteran who has won races for Ford, Chevrolet and Toyota during his career with Richard Childress Racing, Michael Waltrip Racing and now Stewart-Haas Racing.&nbsp;

UNDATED (AP) — Las Vegas Raiders defensive coordinator Paul Guenther believed he finally had the pieces in place this season to have a successful unit after two years of ranking near the bottom of the NFL. But the results haven't been much different one quarter of the way through the season. The Raiders have allowed 30 points per game so far and went more than five quarters without recording a single defensive stop in losses the past two weeks to New England and Buffalo. Patrick Mahomes and the high-flying Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs are next on the schedule for Las Vegas.

Yanks stay alive, Dodgers, Braves, Astros advance

UNDATED (AP) — The Los Angeles Dodgers and Atlanta Braves have completed three-games sweeps in the NL Division Series to earn a matchup in the Championship Series. Meanwhile, the Houston Astros have advanced to the ACLS and await the winner of Friday's game between the Tampa Bay Rays and New York Yankees.

The Dodgers polished off a three-game sweep by crushing the Padres, 12-3. Will Smith set a Dodgers postseason record with five hits, and Joc Pederson had a two-run single to cap a decisive five-run third as Los Angeles reached the NLCS for the fourth time in five years. 

Justin Turner put the Dodgers ahead with his team-record 65th career hit, breaking Steve Garvey's mark.

Cody Bellinger added three RBIs to the rout.

The Braves are in the NLCS following a 7-0 shutout of the Marlins. Kyle Wright struck out seven and held the Marlins to three hits over six innings of his postseason debut, helping the Braves complete a three-game sweep in the division series. 

Travis d'Arnaud (dahr-NOH') hit a two-run double and Dansby Swanson collected two RBIs to help Atlanta reach the NLCS for the first time since 2001.

Carlos Correa slammed a three-run homer and had five RBIs as the Astros clobbered Oakland, 11-6 to advance to the AL Championship Series for the fourth consecutive year. The Astros trailed 3-0 until Michael Brantley smacked the first of his two home runs, a two-run blast in the fourth. 

Jose Altuve (al-TOO'-vah) also homered and Houston's bullpen didn't allow a run until the ninth inning after starter Zack Greinke (GREHN'-kee) was reached for four runs over 4 2/3s.

Luke Voit hit a solo homer and Gleyber (GLAY'-bur) Torres added a two-run blast as the Yankees beat the Rays, 5-1 to force a deciding fifth game in the series. Voit's second-inning shot put New York ahead to stay before the Yanks' pitchers made the lead stand up. Jorden Montgomery gave up three hits over four innings, and the bullpen tossed no-hit, shutout ball the rest of the way.

The Yankees also cooled off Randy Arozarena (ah-rah-zah-RAY'-nah), who went 0-for-4 after collecting 11 hits in the Rays' previous four games.

The only thing to go wrong for the Bombers was the end of Giancarlo Stanton's five-game home run streak.

CHICAGO (AP) — The Chicago Bears are 4-1 after defeating Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Cairo Santos kicked a 38-yard field with 1:17 left as the Bears beat Brady for the first time in six tries, 20-19. 

Brady threw for 253 yards and one touchdown, but the Buccaneers came up short after winning three in a row. 

Brady appeared to lose track of downs on Tampa Bay's final drive. After DeAndre Houston-Carson broke up his fourth-down pass with 33 seconds left, Brady put up four fingers, appearing to think he had one more down.

UNDATED (AP) — Sunday's game between the Buffalo Bills and Tennessee Titans has been moved to Tuesday night as long as Tennessee has no more positive tests for COVID-19 in the interim. That's according to a person with direct knowledge of the switch.

The person also told The Associated Press that the NFL also is rescheduling Sunday's Broncos-Patriots game from to Monday night after New England had a smaller outbreak of COVID-19. 

Three games now have been postponed due to the pandemic: Pittsburgh at Tennessee in Week 3 was moved to Oct. 25. 

Buffalo is scheduled to host Kansas City next Thursday, but that game will be rescheduled. 

Also a person familiar with the situation has told The AP that the Titans were told players could not gather together for any in-person activities either at the club's facility or elsewhere a day before several players worked out at a private school. 

The NFL closed both the Tennessee and Minnesota facilities Sept. 29 after eight positive test results for the Titans. 

Starting quarterback Ryan Tannehill was among a group of Titans who worked out at Montgomery Bell Academy in Nashville on Sept. 30 after getting permission from coaches at the school.

— The Patriots are missing a second straight day of practice since reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Year Stephon Gilmore joined quarterback Cam Newton on the reserve/COVID-19 list. Coach Bill Belichick says the team has closed its facility for the health and safety of the club but is continuing to prepare for its upcoming game with Denver virtually. Belichick says whether the Patriots return to their facility Friday will be a medical decision rather than a football one. 

— Atlanta has activated cornerback A.J. Terrell to their active roster from the reserve/COVID-19 list. The Falcons' first-round draft pick from Clemson has missed the past two games after opening the season as a starter. Terrell's status for Sunday's game against Carolina is not known. 

— Justin Herbert has been named the Chargers' starting quarterback for the rest of the season, beginning with Monday night's game at New Orleans. Head coach Anthony Lynn announced the decision today, saying the rookie from Oregon has impressed him from the beginning while showing consistency and making some great plays. Tyrod Taylor started the season opener but suffered a punctured lung while receiving a pain-killing injection before the Chargers' Sept. 20 game against Kansas City, pressing Herbert into service.

The Devils placed goaltender Cory Schneider on unconditional waivers for the purpose of buying out his contract. The 34-year-old Schneider has two years remaining on the seven-year, $42 million package. He has struggled the past two years and spent part of last season in the minor leagues.

The Blackhawks will not re-sign goaltender Corey Crawford, potentially signaling a more extensive rebuild for one of the NHL's marquee franchises. Crawford helped the franchise to Stanley Cup titles in 2013 and 2015.

— Hurricanes forward Justin Williams is retiring after 19 NHL seasons and three Stanley Cup championships. The 39-year-old Williams had 320 goals and 477 assists for 797 points in 1,264 games with the Hurricanes, Flyers, Kings and Capitals.

— Stars general manager Jim Nill says the plan is for 65-year-old Rick Bowness to return after serving as interim head coach since December. Nill announced that forward Tyler Seguin (SAY'-gihn) will need surgery for a torn labrum in his hip that will likely force him to miss the start of next season. The team also revealed that Stars captain Jamie Benn and netminder Ben Bishop are recovering from surgery.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Clint Bowyer will retire at the end of the NASCAR season and join the Fox Sports booth as an analyst.

DeChambeau had two-putt birdies on all three of the par 5s and two of the par 4s on his way to a 9-under 62 and a one-shot lead over three players. He would have posted his best score on the PGA Tour had he holed an eagle putt from the fringe on the par-5 ninth.

Patrick Cantlay made a 12-foot birdie putt on the 18th for a 63. His only blemish was a long three-putt bogey on the 14th.

That meet has been rescheduled for October 17.&nbsp;

The Blue Dragons will now compete at the University of Nebraska-Kearney Invitational on Friday, October 16 at Kearney Country Club in Kearney, Nebraska.

The women’s race will be at 5 p.m. and the men’s race will be at 5:40 p.m.

The Blue Dragons opted to go to the Nebraska-Kearney meet because the Region VI Cross Country Championships were moved up three days to October 28 in El Dorado.

Those teams had been scheduled to play each other last week but the game was postponed because of the Titans' COVID-19 outbreak.

Braves blank Marlins, Rays take control, A's avoid sweep

UNDATED (AP) — The Atlanta Braves and Los Angeles Dodgers have moved within one victory of a showdown for the National League pennant.

Rookie Ian Anderson combined with four relievers on a three-hitter as the Braves blanked the Marlins, 2-0. Anderson struck out eight over 5 2/3 innings before the Atlanta bullpen tossed no-hit ball the rest of the way.

Atlanta is the third team in major league history and first since the 1966 Orioles to open a postseason with three shutouts in its first four games.

Dansby Swanson and Travis d'Arnaud (dahr-NOH') both homered for the second straight day to help the Braves take a 2-0 lead in the NL Division Series.

Marlins starter Pablo Lopez struck out eight and gave up three hits over five innings, including the two home runs.

The Braves can wrap up the series on Thursday.
