Tulsa, OK – The Wind Surge hammered three home runs and Wichita defeated the Tulsa Drillers 6-1 to even the series at one at ONEOK Field.

Jermaine Palacios two out two run single got the Wind Surge offense going in the first inning. Gilberto Celestino hit his first home run of the season in the third inning to extend the lead to 3-0. Jose Miranda hit his league leading fifth home run in the fifth and the Surge led 5-0 when rain brought the game to a halt.

The rain delay was 42 minutes but after the game resumed the Surge lifted starter Josh Winder. He worked four innings and allowed just one base runner and delivered six strikeouts. The bullpen took over and limited Tulsa to just two hits for the game. Yennier Cano earned the win working two scoreless and striking out five.

Wichita added a Mark Contreras home run in the eighth inning and Wichita ended its three game losing skid. Tulsa had won five in a row before the loss.

Laible threw for touchdowns of 78, 62, 9, 22 and 28 yards in just a little over two quarters of playing time. Laible was part of a season-high 612-yard total offensive output. Since jumping into the starting lineup, Laible is completing 59.5 percent of his passes for 631 yards. He's thrown the ball only 42 times and 11 have been for touchdowns. Jalen Coleman-Lands is headed to Kansas for his sixth year of college basketball. The Indianapolis native announced Wednesday he will transfer to Kansas as a graduate transfer. This will be the 6-foot-4 guard’s fourth college after stops at Illinois, DePaul and Iowa State.

In one season as a Cyclone, Coleman-Lands averaged a career-high 14.3 points, 3.9 rebounds and 1.2 assists while shooting 39.5 percent from behind the 3-point line.

Coleman-Lands has decided he needs a year in Lawrence to cap off his college sojourn. He told the Lawrence Journal-World that he started talking to coach Bill Self about two weeks ago. 

Coleman-Lands announcement comes on the heels of the announcement of Arizona State transfer Remy Martin's decision to make KU his backup plan if he doesn't go to the NBA. KU starters Ochai Agbaji and Jalen Wilson are still currently testing the pro waters, as well.

Alex Reyes pitched the ninth to record his 12th save in 12 chances. JT Brubaker, who had been charged with two earned runs or fewer in six of his first seven starts, gave up five runs on eight hits in 5 2/3 innings.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Royals placed Danny Duffy on the injured list after the left-hander experienced pain in his left forearm, though an MRI exam showed it was a flexor strain and not something more serious. The move with one of the top starters in baseball this season is retroactive to Friday. Duffy's last start was Wednesday in Detroit, where he allowed four runs over six innings with eight strikeouts and two walks. The Royals filled his roster spot by returning right-hander Kyle Zimmer from his rehab assignment. He had been in Triple-A Omaha to ramp up following a back injury.

STILLWATER, Okla. (AP) — Oklahoma State announced it has signed former Kansas guard Bryce Thompson. The 2020 McDonald's All-American started his final three games as a freshman for Kansas. He scored 12 points against Gonzaga and 11 at Texas. He was the Gatorade Oklahoma Boys Player of the Year following his junior and senior seasons at Tulsa's Booker T. Washington High. He helped the Hornets win the 2019 6A state championship. His addition should help Oklahoma State fill some of the void left after guard Cade Cunningham's decision to leave for the NBA.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Milwaukee Brewers have activated Christian Yelich from the injured list and expect the two-time All-Star to play for just the second time in five weeks when they open a two-game interleague set in Kansas City. Yelich played nine games to start the season before leaving with stiffness in his lower back on April 11 in St. Louis. He tried to return on May 3 in Philadelphia but played just one game before returning to the injured list. He wound up playing three consecutive rehab games at Triple-A Nashville over the weekend, going 0 for 5 with a pair of walks while playing in the outfield.

Detroit's Spencer Turnbull no-hits Seattle in Tigers 5-0 win

 UNDATED (AP) — Spencer Turnbull pitched the fifth no-hitter in the majors already this season, sending the Detroit Tigers to a 5-0 victory over the Seattle Mariners. Turnbull, who led the big leagues with 17 losses two years ago, had never gone more than seven innings in any of his previous 49 starts over three seasons. But his fastball and biting slider kept Seattle batters guessing and added to a growing list of gems on the mound in 2021. The five no-hitters through May 18 match the 1917 season for the most in baseball history by that date. Turnbull's no-hitter was the eighth in Tigers history and their first since Justin Verlander's in Toronto on May 7, 2011. 

—The Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 9-1 for their sixth victory in seven games. Gavin Lux hit his first career grand slam and Julio Urías pitched three-hit ball into the seventh inning. The Diamondbacks have lost six of seven after dropping two to LA.

— Josh Naylor hit a tiebreaking homer in the eighth inning and the Cleveland Indians snapped a four-game losing streak with a 6-5 victory over the Los Angeles Angels. The Indians jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first but saw the Angels steadily rally and tie it in the seventh. 

— Ramón Laureano hit two home runs, then lofted a game-ending sacrifice fly in the ninth inning to send the Oakland Athletics over Houston 6-5, ending the Astros' six-game winning streak. 

— DJ LeMahieu had a season-high three RBIs for the New York Yankees as they beat the Texas Rangers 7-4. LeMehieu's tiebreaking, two-run double capped a five-run fourth for the Yankees and was his first multi-RBI hit this season. Rouged Odor had two hits against his former team in his return to the Yankees lineup after missing 12 games because of a sprained left knee. 

— Hyun Jin Ryu pitched seven masterful innings, light-hitting Danny Jansen played a key offensive role and the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Boston Red Sox 8-0. Ryu scattered four hits and struck out seven. Jansen had a second-inning RBI single and drew a pivotal walk during a three-run fourth as Toronto won for the ninth time in 12 games and improved to a season-high six games over .500. 

— Miguel Sanó homered three times, Jorge Polanco hit a game-ending RBI single and the Minnesota Twins beat Yermín Mercedes and the Chicago White Sox 5-4. Twins reliever Tyler Duffey was ejected for throwing behind Mercedes in the seventh, and that seemed to spark the slumping Twins.

The Marlins took a 3-1 lead when Jazz Chisholm Jr. hit a two-run homer off a 100-mph fastball from Jose Alvarado in the top of the eighth. But the Phillies answered in the bottom half.

— Inspired by Kevin Pillar's return to the dugout, the New York Mets got homers from Jonathan Villar and Tomás Nido and strong performances by a string of relievers to beat the Atlanta Braves 4-3. Villar hit a two-run shot in the third inning. Nido won it for the Mets in the ninth with a tiebreaking drive into the left-field seats off struggling Braves closer Will Smith.

NEW YORK (AP) — New York Mets outfielder Kevin Pillar suffered multiple nasal fractures when he was hit in the face by a fastball. The Mets say Pillar will meet with a facial specialist in Atlanta to determine the next steps. 

He was drilled in the nose by a 95 mph pitch from Braves reliever Jacob Webb with the bases loaded in the seventh inning Monday night. Pillar was knocked to the ground, and blood poured from his nose when he lifted his head. After the game, Mets manager Luis Rojas said the veteran outfielder was taken to the hospital for a CT scan. Pillar later provided an encouraging update on Twitter, saying it was a scary moment but he was doing fine.

— Shortstop Gleyber Torres (GLAY'-bur TOHR'-ehz) could be back in the New York Yankees' lineup a week after testing positive for COVID-19. Manager Aaron Boone says the fully vaccinated Torres had been cleared by MLB's joint committee and was en route to Texas to rejoin the team. The shortstop could potentially be activated Wednesday. Asymptomatic vaccinated people can be cleared to return if they test negative twice. Torres is the only player among nine total positives in the Yankees' traveling party since last week. Boone said the shortstop is the only person in that group cleared to return.

— Second baseman Rougned Odor is back in the lineup for the New York Yankees. Odor was activated from the injured list before Tuesday's game against his former team, the Texas Rangers. He missed 12 games with a left knee sprain after a collision at home plate against the Astros on May 4. Odor says he feels great and is ready to go for the game in Texas. He also says it's a weird feeling facing his former team. He played each of his first seven big league seasons with the Rangers. 

UNDATED (AP) — Thatcher Demko had 38 saves and the Vancouver Canucks withstood a late barrage and held on for a 4-2 victory over the Calgary Flames. 

Tyler Myers, Travis Hamonic and Brock Boeser each had a goal and an assist for the Canucks. Rookie Nils Hoglander rounded out the scoring for Vancouver with a goal in the closing minute of the first period. The Flames and Canucks will wrap up their seasons Wednesday with a matinee in Calgary. 

— Tristan Jarry stopped 39 shots and the Pittsburgh Penguins evened their first-round series with the New York Islanders with a 2-1 victory on Tuesday night. Jarry struggled in a 4-3 loss in Game 1 but bounced back to pick up the first postseason victory of his career. Bryan Rust and Jeff Carter scored in the first period for the Penguins. Josh Bailey drew New York within a goal late in the second period, but the Islanders couldn't draw even. The series shifts to New York for Game 3.

— Andrei Vasilevskiy stopped 32 shots, Steven Stamkos and Ondrej Palat had first-period goals and the Tampa Bay Lightning beat the Florida Panthers 3-1 on Tuesday night to take a 2-0 lead in their Central Division first-round playoff series. It's the seventh time that the Lightning have won the first two games a series. They will look to put Florida on the brink of elimination when the series shifts to Tampa on Thursday night. 

Sabonis leads Pacers past Hornets 144-117 in play-in round

UNDATED (AP) — Domantas Sabonis had 14 points, 21 rebounds and nine assists, and the short-handed Indiana Pacers routed the Charlotte Hornets 144-117 in the Eastern Conference's first play-in game. 

Led by Sabonis and Doug McDermott, who scored 16 of his 21 points in the first quarter, the ninth-seeded Pacers snapped a franchise-worst nine-game losing streak in the postseason. They also moved within one victory of making a sixth consecutive playoff appearance. Charlotte was led by Miles Bridges with 18 points. The Hornets finished the season with six straight losses.

— Jayson Tatum scored 32 of his 50 points in the second half, and the Boston Celtics rallied to beat the Washington Wizards 118-100 in the play-in round. Kemba Walker added 29 points for Boston, which secured the seventh seed for the playoffs and a first-round matchup with second-seeded Brooklyn. That series opens on Saturday. Washington will host Indiana, which rolled over Charlotte in Tuesday's other play-in game, for the eighth seed on Friday. The winner of that game will face Philadelphia, the top seed for the Eastern Conference playoffs. Bradley Beal scored 22 points for the Wizards. Russell Westbrook added 20 points and 14 rebounds.

— Milwaukee Bucks reserve forward Thanasis Antetokounmpo (an-teh-toh-KOON'-poh) will miss the start of the playoffs after fracturing his right patella tendon in his team's regular-season finale. Bucks officials say the 28-year-old will be out for at least two weeks. He's the older brother of Milwaukee Bucks forward and two-time reigning MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo (YAH'-nihs an-teh-toh-KOON'-poh). The Bucks are the No. 3 seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs and open a first-round series with the Miami Heat on Saturday.

— Upon further review, Indiana's Myles Turner is the NBA's blocked-shot champion for this season. The NBA said Tuesday that Turner will be recognized as the winner in that category, even though he did not play in the required 70% of games that are typically needed for someone to qualify as a statistical leader. Turner averaged 3.4 blocks per game in 47 games. 

— Charles Barkley has given $1,000 apiece to the more than 200 employees of a city school system in his native Alabama. The former Auburn and NBA basketball star graduated from Leeds High School in 1981. Now, AL.com reports he is giving money to each Leeds City School system worker. The announcement was made Tuesday on Facebook. According to the post, Barkley has provided more than $3 million in scholarships to Leeds graduates over the past 30 years. 

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — The Jacksonville Jaguars traded cornerback Josiah Scott to the Philadelphia Eagles for cornerback Jameson Houston and a sixth-round draft pick in 2023. 

Scott, a fourth-round selection in 2020, became expendable after Jacksonville signed Shaquill Griffin in free agency and used a second-rounder on Tyson Campbell. Houston was considered a long shot to make the Eagles' opening day roster and likely will be in the same spot in Jacksonville. 

— The Jacksonville Jaguars signed fourth-round draft pick Jordan Smith. The team has two of its nine draft picks under contract. Smith was expected to sign a four-year deal worth about $4.22 million under the NFL's rookie slotting system. The 6-foot-7, 255-pound Smith started his college career at Florida but was dismissed after getting caught up in a credit card scandal. 

— The New York Giants have added another running back to the roster. They claimed Ryquell Armstead off waivers after he was released by the Jacksonville Jaguars. He joins newcomer Corey Clement as a contender to back up Saquon Barkley next season. Armstead spent all of last season on the COVID-19 list. 

— The Patriots have signed safety and 2021 sixth-round draft pick Joshuah Bledsoe and re-signed free agent quarterback Brian Hoyer. Bledsoe is the fourth member of the Patriots' 2021 draft class to sign. He joins fifth-round linebacker Cameron McGrone, sixth-round offensive lineman Will Sherman, along with receiver Tre' Nixon, who was taken in the seventh round. Hoyer continues his third stint in New England after spending last season as one of Cam Newton's backups. New England released offensive lineman Najee Toran. 

Former Louisville assistant charged by feds with extortion

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Federal authorities have charged a former University of Louisville assistant basketball coach with attempting to extort the university. 

A federal charging document says Dino Gaudio threatened to go to the media with alleged NCAA violations by the team. He was in a March 17 meeting with team personnel when he says he would expose alleged violations by the team "in its production of recruiting videos for prospective student-athletes and in the use of its graduate assistants in practices." Gaudio and another assistant left the team in March. Head coach Chris Mack says he is fully cooperating with the investigation.

Former Pirates infielder Stennett dead at 72

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Former Pittsburgh Pirate second baseman Rennie Stennett has died following a bout with cancer. He was 72. 

Stennett spent nine of his 11 big league seasons with the Pirates, helping the team win the 1979 World Series. Stennett hit .274 over the course of his career and twice received votes for the National League's Most Valuable Player award. Stennett started at second base on Sept. 1, 1971 when the Pirates fielded the first all-Black starting lineup in MLB history. Stennett is also the only player in the modern era to go 7 for 7 at the plate in a nine-inning game.

(AP) — The Kansas City Royals placed Danny Duffy on the injured list after the left-hander experienced pain in his left forearm, though an MRI exam showed it was a flexor strain and not something more serious. The move with one of the top starters in baseball this season is retroactive to Friday. Duffy's last start was Wednesday in Detroit, where he allowed four runs over six innings with eight strikeouts and two walks. The Royals filled his roster spot by returning right-hander Kyle Zimmer from his rehab assignment. He had been in Triple-A Omaha to ramp up following a back injury.STILLWATER, Okla. (AP) — The Milwaukee Brewers have activated Christian Yelich from the injured list and expect the two-time All-Star to play for just the second time in five weeks when they open a two-game interleague set in Kansas City. He tried to return on May 3 in Philadelphia but played just one game before returning to the injured list. The Mets say Pillar will meet with a facial specialist in Atlanta to determine the next steps. He was drilled in the nose by a 95 mph pitch from Braves reliever Jacob Webb with the bases loaded in the seventh inning Monday night. Pillar was knocked to the ground, and blood poured from his nose when he lifted his head. After the game, Mets manager Luis Rojas said the veteran outfielder was taken to the hospital for a CT scan. (AP) — Federal authorities have charged a former University of Louisville assistant basketball coach with attempting to extort the university. A federal charging document says Dino Gaudio threatened to go to the media with alleged NCAA violations by the team. He was in a March 17 meeting with team personnel when he says he would expose alleged violations by the team "in its production of recruiting videos for prospective student-athletes and in the use of its graduate assistants in practices." Gaudio and another assistant left the team in March. Head coach Chris Mack says he is fully cooperating with the investigation.MLBFormer Pirates infielder Stennett dead at 72PITTSBURGH (AP) — Former Pittsburgh Pirate second baseman Rennie Stennett has died following a bout with cancer. He was 72. Stennett spent nine of his 11 big league seasons with the Pirates, helping the team win the 1979 World Series. Stennett hit .274 over the course of his career and twice received votes for the National League's Most Valuable Player award. Stennett started at second base on Sept. 1, 1971 when the Pirates fielded the first all-Black starting lineup in MLB history. BUHLER, Kan. — It took an extra frame, but Buhler beat league foe Rose Hill on Tuesday in the one game the teams were able to get in before the wet weather stopped play. The Crusaders won 3-2 in eight innings. Ryan Henderson was the winner on the hill for Buhler.

Towanda-Circle and Ulysses will play at 2 p.m. Thursday to determine the Crusaders' opponent in the championship game. That tilt will be 20 minutes after the first game concludes.

The winner will go on to the 4A state tournament in Salina May 27 and 28.

TULSA, Okla. — The Tulsa Drillers offense exploded in the third inning, scoring eight runs on seven hits in a 12-3 come-from-behind win at Oneok Field in Tulsa Tuesday.

The Wind Surge scored a pair of runs in the first inning. Jose Miranda and Mark Contreras each had RBI doubles in the inning.

Tulsa responded with the eight-run third and then added two runs in the fourth and sixth innings. The Drillers Ryan Noda had two home runs and four RBI.

The Drillers won their fifth consecutive game and the Wind Surge dropped their third straight contest. The 12 runs allowed by the Wind Surge is a season high and the eight runs in the third also is a season high.

Royals shut out Brewers Tuesday

COFFEYVILLE, Kan. — The Hutchinson Community College women’s soccer team returned to the NJCAA Top 20 for the first time in four years on Monday.

The Blue Dragons on Tuesday snapped a three-match Region VI Tournament losing streak.

Sophomore Esther Karhayu scored a pair of goals to lead the No. 20-ranked Blue Dragons to a 3-1 victory over Coffeyville in the quarterfinals of the Region VI Women’s Soccer Tournament at Veterans’ Memorial Stadium.

The Blue Dragons (7-3-3) advance to the Region VI semifinals against the Cowley/Butler winner on Saturday at the Stryker Soccer Complex in Wichita. The Cowley-Butler quarterfinal match is Wednesday in Arkansas City. This will be Hutchinson’s first Region VI semifinal appearance since 2016.

Just minutes into the match, the Blue Dragons and Red Ravens were playing in heavy rain.

Within the midst of the downpour, Sophomore Samantha Vaughn worked a pass down the left sideline to Karhayu, who received the pass and sprinted toward the goal. She rifled a shot past the Coffeyville keeper for a 1-0 lead with 33:04 to play in the first half.

Led by the back line of sophomore Cheyenne Busker and Zara Lawless, the Blue Dragons held Coffeyville to only one shot attempted in the first half and limited Coffeyville’s leading scorer, Louise Atkinson, to only three shot attempts for the match.

The Blue Dragons took control of the match with two goals in a 1-minute, 34-second span early in the second half.

Karhayu scored her second goal of the match when she powered home a rebound of her own saved shot and gave Hutchinson a 2-0 lead with 41:25 to play in the second half on an unassisted goal.

Just 1:34 later, sophomore Marah Franke delivered a corner kick that Chiara Stuenkel headed into the goal for a 3-0 lead with 39:51 to play.

Coffeyville was able to break the shutout with 12:49 to play when Rachael Manley scored unassisted after a bad Blue Dragon goal kick.

After than that, the Blue Dragon defense was stellar, allowing only three shots to get to freshman goalkeeper Kambrian Colborn, who had two saves.

Coffeyville out-shot Hutchinson 16-10, 15 shots by the Red Ravens were in the second half.

Karhayu scored a goal in her fourth-straight match. She has back-to-back matches with two goals and this is her third multi-goal game this season and fourth of her career.

Karhayu is the 15th Blue Dragon in Hutchinson postseason history with a multi-goal match.

The Blue Dragons are now 22-12 all-time in the postseason, including 13-3 in the Region VI quarterfinals. Hutchinson is 3-1 all-time in the Region VI Tournament against Coffeyville, all three wins have come at Veterans’ Memorial Stadium.

MCPHERSON, Kan. — The Buhler Crusader boys golf team backed up its league title with a regional crown on Tuesday. The Crusaders were three strokes better than McPherson at the Bullpups' home course at Turkey Creek.

(AP) — Lucas Niang doesn't regret his decision to opt out of his rookie season with the Kansas City Chiefs because of the COVID-19 pandemic, even if it means the offensive lineman faces an uphill fight for playing time this season. Now, more than a year after Niang was drafted in the third round out of TCU, the Chiefs are getting a chance to see him on the field. He took part in their three-day rookie minicamp over the weekend. That gave him a chance to shake off any of the rust accumulated during his time away while giving the Chiefs an idea of how he might fit into the lineup.

DENVER (AP) — The St. Louis Blues will be without leading scorer David Perron for Game 1 of their first-round playoff series against top-seeded Colorado on Monday due to the NHL's virus protocols. St. Louis will again have forward Vladimir Tarasenko, who was sidelined the last six games of the regular season with a lower-body injury. Perron appeared on the league's "players unavailable due to COVID protocol" list starting Saturday. St. Louis has two other players on the list in forward Nathan Walker and defenseman Jake Walman.&nbsp;

Giants get 6 shutout innings from Webb, beat Reds 6-3

UNDATED (AP) — Logan Webb pitched six shutout innings and the San Francisco Giants backed him with three home runs, beating the Cincinnati Reds 6-3.

Wilmer Flores, Mike Yastrzemski and Mauricio Dubón homered for the NL West-leading Giants. Webb gave up six hits, struck out four and walked a batter. 

The Reds left the bases loaded in the second inning, but Webb didn't allow a runner past second for the rest of his outing and induced a pair of double-play balls. Nick Castellanos and Eugenio Suárez hit back-to-back homers for the Reds in the eighth.

— Yu Darvish struck out 10 in seven brilliant innings and also doubled and scored, and Manny Machado hit a two-run homer for the San Diego Padres, who beat the Colorado Rockies 7-0 for their fourth straight win. The Padres are 6-1 since last Tuesday, when star shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. tested positive for the coronavirus before a game at Colorado and right fielder Wil Myers and first baseman Eric Hosmer were pulled from the game. A positive test was returned for Myers while Hosmer was put in the contact tracing protocol. 

— Albert Pujols delivered an RBI single in his Dodgers debut, and Walker Buehler pitched seven scoreless innings of one-hit ball in Los Angeles' 3-1 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks. Pujols went 1 for 4 while playing first base and batting cleanup for the defending World Series champions, who formally signed the 10-time All-Star on Monday after the Los Angeles Angels cut him earlier this month. Eduardo Escobar had an RBI single in the eighth for Arizona, which opened a four-game series at Chavez Ravine with its fifth loss in six games. Buehler dominated Arizona except one wild stretch in the fourth.

— Eric Haase hit two home runs, Casey Mize took a two-hit shutout into the eighth inning and the Detroit Tigers beat the Seattle Mariners 4-1. The Tigers, who began the day 12 games under .500, have won six of eight. Seattle's three-game winning streak ended. Mize allowed just three hits and permitted only two runners past first base in a career-high 7 2/3 innings. It was his second straight win and fourth consecutive quality start. Mize, the 24-year-old centerpiece of Detroit's rebuild and the overall No. 1 pick in the 2018, struck out seven — that matched his career high, set in his debut last year.

— Shohei Ohtani hit his major league-leading 13th home run and the Los Angeles Angels defeated the slumping Cleveland Indians 7-4 after star outfielder Mike Trout was injured early. Trout strained his right calf in the first inning. The three-time AL MVP was limping after running to third on an inning-ending popup. Ohtani drove Sam Hentges' fastball into the seats in right-center during a five-run second to give the Angels a 6-1 lead. The Japanese superstar, who hit the go-ahead homer with two outs in the ninth inning Sunday at Boston, has gone deep in consecutive games twice this season.

— Nick Madrigal had three hits, including his first major league homer, and Danny Mendick launched his first career grand slam as the Chicago White Sox beat the Minnesota Twins 16-4. Seven players had multiple hits for Chicago, which posted season highs in runs and hits, with 18. Dallas Keuchel was the beneficiary, pitching seven innings and allowing three runs on seven hits. J.A. Happ was roughed up again by the White Sox.

— Adolis Garcia and Willie Calhoun homered as the Texas Rangers ended a six-game losing streak with a 5-2 win over the New York Yankees. Texas denied Gerrit Cole's bid to become the American League's first six-game winner. Rangers right-hander Jordan Lyles fanned six in six innings to win for the first time in his last eight starts. 

— Willson Contreras, Jason Heyward and Javier Báez homered off Jon Lester in his return to Chicago, and the Cubs beat the Washington Nationals 7-3. Lester and Kyle Schwarber, two key members of Chicago's 2016 World Series championship team, heard loud cheers all night long in their first game against their former team. 

— Pinch-hitter James McCann drove in the game's first run with a double, Tomás Nido had three hits and the New York Mets overcame more injuries to beat the Atlanta Braves 3-1. With the bases loaded in the seventh inning, Mets right fielder Kevin Pillar was hit square in the nose by a 95-mph pitch from Jacob Webb. Pillar was knocked to the ground, and blood poured from his nose when he lifted his head. 

Dodgers sign Pujols; Yanks' Stanton to IL

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Albert Pujols has signed a major league deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers. 

The 41-year-old slugger is moving 30 miles north to extend his remarkable career with the defending World Series champions after leaving the Los Angeles Angels. Pujols was unceremoniously cut by the Angels earlier this month in an abrupt end to his largely unsuccessful 10-year, $240 million tenure with the Orange County club. 

— The New York Mets have placed outfielder Michael Conforto and second baseman Jeff McNeil on the 10-day injured list with hamstring injuries. Conforto strained his right hamstring and McNeil strained his left hamstring in Sunday's 7-1 loss at Tampa Bay. Mets manager Luis Rojas says the team is "taking a week to week approach" with the two players. 

— New York Yankees designated hitter Giancarlo Stanton has been placed on the 10-day injured list with a left quad strain. Stanton missed all three games in their weekend series at Baltimore. Stanton is hitting .282 with nine homers and 24 RBIs in 33 games this season. He is 3 for 25 since homering in three consecutive games May 4-6. 

— The Houston Astros will allow maximum attendance starting May 25. The Boston Red Sox announced earlier Monday that they will fill Fenway Park to capacity as of May 29, making them one of the first teams in major league baseball to play to a full house. The Texas Rangers played to 100% capacity for opening day, and the Atlanta Braves on May 7 were the first MLB team to go to full capacity full-time. 

Marchand scores in OT, Bruins beat Capitals to even series

UNDATED (AP) — Brad Marchand scored 39 seconds into overtime and the Boston Bruins rallied to beat the Washington Capitals 4-3 and even the East Division first-round series at a game apiece. 

Marchand was Boston's OT hero in a game in which he made more noise for taking post-whistle penalties than producing. The Bruins' leading scorer, who ranked third in the NHL in points, looked more like himself on the one-timer he ripped past Craig Anderson in overtime. Taylor Hall tied it with 2:49 left in regulation for the Bruins. Game 3 is Wednesday night in Boston.

Vancouver Canucks forward Jake Virtanen sued over alleged sexual assault

UNDATED (AP) — Vancouver Canucks forward Jake Virtanen has been accused in a lawsuit of sexually assaulting a woman four years ago. 

The suit was filed last week in British Columbia and alleges Virtanen took the unidentified woman to a hotel in West Vancouver and assaulted her as she repeatedly said no and pleaded with him to stop. The allegations have not been tested in court and a defense statement has not been filed. On May 1, the Canucks placed the 24-year-old player on leave. The team said then it was pursuing an independent investigation. 

LeBron vs. Steph: A play-in game will be a superstar tussle

UNDATED (AP) — The matchups for the NBA's new play-in tournament are set. 

It starts Tuesday with the Eastern Conference: No. 10 Charlotte at No. 9 Indiana and No. 8 Washington at No. 7 Boston. 

And things shift to the West on Wednesday: No. 10 San Antonio at No. 9 Memphis and No. 8 Golden State at the seventh-seeded Los Angeles Lakers. LeBron James and Stephen Curry have squared off four times for championships, when Warriors vs. Cleveland was an annual NBA Finals matchup. They'll square off Wednesday for a different prize — the No. 7 seed in the West.

Broadcaster Marv Albert retiring after NBA East finals

NEW YORK (AP) — Marv Albert is retiring after the NBA's Eastern Conference finals, ending a broadcasting career spanning nearly 60 years. 

Albert will call the series for TNT. He has been with Turner Sports for 22 years, 19 as an NBA play-by-play announcer. Albert, known for his signature "Yes!" call, turns 80 next month. He has covered everything from football and boxing to hockey, baseball and tennis. But he is linked most to basketball, having called 13 NBA Finals and 25 All-Star Games for NBC and Turner, along with the Dream Team's romp to the gold medal in the 1992 Olympics.

UNDATED (AP) — The Green Bay Packers have signed Kurt Benkert in their latest attempt to add quarterback depth while MVP Aaron Rodgers' future with the team remains unclear. 

Green Bay has signed both Benkert and former Jacksonville Jaguars starting quarterback Blake Bortles over the past week. Rodgers and 2020 first-round pick Jordan Love had been the only quarterbacks on the Packers' roster. The 25-year-old Benkert has never appeared in an NFL regular-season game. 

— The Patriots have signed veteran offensive linemen James Ferentz and Alex Redmond. Ferentz returns to New England, where he's appeared in 24 games over the past four seasons. The 31-year-old also previously spent two seasons in Denver and one in Houston. Redmond was signed by Cincinnati as an undrafted free agent in 2017. The 26-year-old has played mostly at right guard and has appeared in 32 games for the Bengals since then, including 24 starts. 

— The Philadelphia Eagles and four-time Pro Bowl defensive end Ryan Kerrigan have agreed on a one-year contract. The 32-year-old Kerrigan played 10 seasons in Washington and is the franchise's all-time leader with 95 1/2 sacks. Kerrigan had 5 1/2 sacks last season for the NFC East champions but played a career-low 38 percent of the snaps. 

— The Denver Broncos have hired Kelly Kleine as executive director of football operations and special adviser to the general manager. She is believed to be the highest-ranking female scouting executive ever with an NFL team. Kleine spent the last nine seasons working with Broncos first-year GM George Paton with the Minnesota Vikings. 

— The Indianapolis Colts' career sacks leader, Robert Mathis, will be inducted into the Colts Ring of Honor later this year. The ceremony will take place at halftime of its Nov. 28 game against Super Bowl champion Tampa Bay. Mathis was supposed to become the 17th honoree last season but the induction was postponed because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

— The Jacksonville Jaguars signed sixth-round draft pick Jalen Camp on Monday and waived third-year running back Ryquell Armstead. Armstead spent all of last season on the COVID-19 list.. Armstead became expendable after the emergence of running back James Robinson in 2020. Under the NFL's rookie slotting system, Camp's four-year deal is worth about $3.64 million.

Dozens more men sue Ohio State over doc's sexual misconduct

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Dozens more men are suing Ohio State over the university's failure to stop sexual abuse and misconduct decades ago by team doctor Richard Strauss.

They echo claims filed previously by over 400 men, many of whom allege they were groped during medical exams. The newest claims were filed in federal court ahead of Monday, which marked two years since OSU released a law firm report that concluded university employees knew of concerns about Strauss but didn't stop him. Strauss died in 2005. 

The school has publicly apologized and promised a "monetary resolution" for survivors. It already reached nearly $47 million in settlements for 185 plaintiffs.

Zion's name surfaces in court documents for Bowen lawsuit

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Zion Williamson's name has surfaced in court documents that are part of a lawsuit filed against Adidas by another player who was at the center of the federal investigation into college basketball and never got the opportunity to play in college. 

According to the documents, an employee of the apparel maker allegedly funneled money through his company to Williamson's family while the New Orleans Pelicans star and former Duke All-American was in high school. 

The lawsuit was filed by Brian Bowen II, who initially signed with Louisville and then later with South Carolina. Bowen became entangled in the federal corruption investigation into the sport when his father accepted payments for his son to play for Louisville.

New York suspends Bob Baffert pending Kentucky Derby probe

UNDATED (AP) — Bob Baffert has been temporarily suspended from entering horses at New York racetracks pending an investigation of the failed drug test by Kentucky Derby winner Medina Spirit. 

Baffert's ban in New York includes races at Belmont Park with the Belmont Stakes being run on June 5. The New York Racing Association made the announcement Monday. Baffert had not committed to entering any horses in the third leg of the Triple Crown but had many in consideration for other races on Belmont Stakes day. 

Derby winner Medina Spirit tested positive for the steroid betamethasone in post-race testing and faces disqualification unless a second test comes back negative. Medina Spirit finished third in the Preakness on Saturday.

According to the documents, an employee of the apparel maker allegedly funneled money through his company to Williamson's family while the New Orleans Pelicans star and former Duke All-American was in high school. The lawsuit was filed by Brian Bowen II, who initially signed with Louisville and then later with South Carolina. Bowen became entangled in the federal corruption investigation into the sport when his father accepted payments for his son to play for Louisville.BELMONT-BAFFERT BANNew York suspends Bob Baffert pending Kentucky Derby probeUNDATED (AP) — Bob Baffert has been temporarily suspended from entering horses at New York racetracks pending an investigation of the failed drug test by Kentucky Derby winner Medina Spirit. Baffert's ban in New York includes races at Belmont Park with the Belmont Stakes being run on June 5. The New York Racing Association made the announcement Monday. Baffert had not committed to entering any horses in the third leg of the Triple Crown but had many in consideration for other races on Belmont Stakes day. Derby winner Medina Spirit tested positive for the steroid betamethasone in post-race testing and faces disqualification unless a second test comes back negative. Arizona State transfer Remy Martin, a two-time all-Pac-12 guard, intends to test out his draft stock for the NBA and be fully evaluated. Then, it is expected that he will return to school to play for Bill Self in Lawrence. 

The 6-foot, 175-pound senior from Chatsworth, Calif., averaged 19.1 points per game in 34 minutes per outing for the Sun Devils in each of the past two seasons and shot 43% from the floor.

Martin was Pac-12 Sixth Man of the Year in 2018-19, as well. 

KU's Ochai Agbaji and Jalen Wilson are also both going through the NBA Draft process.
