GARDEN CITY – The Hutchinson Community College women’s soccer team moved to 27-0 all-time against Garden City after a 2-0 Jayhawk West victory on Wednesday at Broncbuster Stadium.

Hadlie Lowe and Lani Dickinson tallied a goal and an assist each, while goalkeeper Olivia Felix-Cardona posted her second shutout of the season to lift Hutchinson.

The Blue Dragons improved to 2-2 overall and earned their first conference victory of the season to go to 1-2 (3 points) in league play. Garden City is 4-3 overall and 1-2 in the Jayhawk West.

Hutchinson travels to No. 12 Butler on Saturday.

Hutchinson survived a strong early Garden City surge and ultimately dominated possession, outshooting the Busters 17-8. The Blue Dragon defense held Garden City to only two shot attempts in the second half, neither were on goal.

The Blue Dragons scored in the ninth minute on a counter attack off that strong Buster start. Dickinson quickly dribbled the ball up the right sideline and slid a deft pass to Lowe, who made one touch and then beat Garden City keeper Abigail Camp to her right with a shot into the lower left corner of the goal. That was Lowe’s team-high third goal of the season and Dickinson’s first assist of 2021.

Hutchinson made it 2-0 late in the game. Ella-Mae Miller intercepted a long Buster pass and instantly countered with a pass to Lowe, who then played a perfect pass to Dickinson for a breakaway. Dickinson scored her first of the season with 8:14 to play in the contest for a 2-0 lead. Both Lowe and Miller were credited with assists.

Garden City produced two major scoring chances in the first half, but Felix-Cardona was equal to the task for the Blue Dragons.

Just 2 minutes into the game, Garden City’s Miranda Cardona was robbed on a breakaway with a brilliant Felix-Cardona save. Felix-Cardona then preserved Hutchinson’s 1-0 lead with 4:04 to play in the first half. Garden City’s Abbie Hulme ripped a shot from 15 yards out that was stopped by diving Felix-Cardona. The rebound was loose, but the Blue Dragon keeper was able to corral the ball before a converging Buster player could get to it.

Those two shots were Felix-Cardona’s only two saves of the game. She did not have to make a save in the second half.

Camp was credited with eight saves for Garden City.

Within that 27-game win streak by the Blue Dragon over Garden City is a streak of 10-straight shutouts. The Blue Dragons have outscored Garden City 144-7 in the all-time series.

WICHITA, KS – The Wind Surge opened up the final homestand with a 3-1 game one victory over the Northwest Arkansas Naturals Tuesday. The duo of Cole Sands and Kody Funderburk combined to give up one unearned run and five hits on the night to limit the Naturals’ offense.

Neither side had much offensive power through the first two-thirds of the game. After six innings, both Wichita and Northwest Arkansas had one run and four hits. The Naturals scored first in the top of the first off a throwing error from Roy Morales. With runners on the corners, Morales was trying to catch Jeison Guzman stealing second. The throw just got by Jermaine Palacios covering the bag and Clay Dungan scored on the play.

The Wind Surge tied the game at one in the bottom of the third. D.J. Burt doubled on a line drive to left field for his seventh double of the year. After Whitefield grounded to first to move Burt to third, Austin Martin brought Burt home with a check-swing, soft ground ball to third base and Martin was able to beat out the throw to allow Burt to score on the play.

Wichita scored twice in the bottom of the seventh to break the tie and take the lead with six outs to go. The Wind Surge dealt all their damage this inning with two outs on the board. Recently activated off the injured list, Andrew Bechtold made his presence felt with a home run to the right field deck. Bechtold’s 17th of the year traveled at 99 miles per hour off his bat to put the Wind Surge in front.

After Bechtold’s home run, D.J. Burt picked up his second double of the night with a line drive to the left field corner. Aaron Whitefield then switched places with Burt with another line drive to left field that barely got over the leaping third baseman’s head. KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Amid another lost year for the Kansas City Royals, Salvador Perez is giving fans a reason to pay attention. The veteran catcher is on a historic home run-hitting pace as the stretch run begins. The 31-year-old is setting his sights not only on the franchise record but also the mark for any big league backstop. He already has 41 homers this season, four behind Johnny Bench's record set in 1970 for a player making at least 75% of his starts at catcher. And with a go-ahead RBI single in a win Monday night over the Orioles, Perez moved into a tie with Jose Abreu of the White Sox for the big lead league.

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz knows what Iowa State coach Matt Campbell is going through. He was once sought by other schools and the NFL. Ferentz decided to stay at Iowa and has become one of the winningest coach in Big Ten history. In five seasons with Iowa State, Campbell has already turned down opportunities to leave. On Saturday, Campbell need only look to the opposite sideline to see how a coach can make a pretty decent life in Iowa. That's when No. 9 Iowa State hosts No. 10 Iowa in their annual showdown.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — College football teams spent the opening week of the season getting reacquainted with an unfamiliar sound: Authentic crowd noise. The return of fans created some memorable scenes and allowed the return of some treasured traditions, including the "Jump Around" student frenzy at Wisconsin and players at Kinnick Stadium in Iowa waving to patients at a nearby children's hospital. Teams have to adjust to it. Competing without spectators made it easy for players and coaches to communicate with one another last year. Now it's a little trickier.&nbsp;

WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. Department of Justice says former NFL players Clinton Portis, Tamarick Vanover and Robert McCune have pleaded guilty in a nationwide health care fraud scheme. The Justice Department says Portis, Vanover and McCune admitted to defrauding a league program set up to reimburse medical expenses not covered by insurance for former NFL players and their families. McCune could be facing life in prison after the Justice Department says he orchestrated the scheme that resulted in approximately $2.9 million worth of false and fraudulent claims. Portis and Vanover each face up to 10 years in prison for their roles.

COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. (AP) — The long wait is over for Derek Jeter, Larry Walker, Ted Simmons, and the late Marvin Miller. The Baseball Hall of Fame will induct them on Wednesday, well over a year after the four were selected. Last year's ceremony was canceled because of COVID-19 and nobody was selected this year. The longtime shortstop and captain of the Yankees, Jeter appeared on all but one of the 397 ballots cast by the Baseball Writers' Association of America. His 99.7% was the second-highest share in history, behind only former Yankees teammate Mariano Rivera, the only unanimous pick in history.&nbsp;

UNDATED (AP) — San Diego Padres left-hander Blake Snell made another bid at a gem and this one didn't end so well when Jo Adell hit a two-run single with two outs in the seventh inning to help the Los Angeles Angels to a 4-0 victory. 

Snell took a perfect game into the seventh inning before walking two batters and allowing Adell's liner to left on his 96th pitch. 

Snell was trying for the majors' ninth no-hitter this year, which would've topped the record of eight set in 1884, the first season overhand pitching was permitted

Brandon Crawford added three hits and an RBI. All of Duggar's hits went for extra bases and he drove in three runs. Yastrzemski added a run-scoring single in the ninth, finishing with three RBIs, as San Francisco won for the fifth time in six games. C.J. Cron had an RBI double for Colorado. Pinch-hitter Joshua Fuentes and Rio Ruiz added RBI singles.

— Ben Gamel had a go-ahead two-run single in the sixth inning among his three hits and the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Detroit Tigers 3-2. Gamel also made an outstanding catch in left field to end the top of the sixth, slamming into the fence to take away a potential extra-base hit from Derek Hill with two runners on and preventing the Tigers from adding to their 2-1 lead. Miguel Cabera went 3 for 4 with a double for the Tigers, raising his career hits total to 2,967.

—John Gant pitched five solid innings to get his first win since joining Minnesota and spoil Cleveland starter Aaron Civale's impressive return from injury, leading the Twins to a 3-0 win over the Indians. Brent Rooker homered for the Twins, who have won six of their past seven against the Indians. Gant, who came over from St. Louis in a July trade, didn't allow a run on three hits. 

—Nelson Cruz homered twice and, at 41 years old, became the oldest player in major league history to hit 30 home runs in a season, powering the Tampa Bay Rays past the Boston Red Sox 12-7. Mike Zunino also homered twice and Jordan Luplow connected for the AL East leaders. Rays rookie Wander Franco went 0 for 4 with a walk, extending his on-base streak to 37 games and passing Mickey Mantle for the longest by an AL player under 21 years old. The 20-year-old Franco now trails only Frank Robinson, who reached in 43 straight in 1956. The Red Sox again missed a chance to move ahead of the Yankees for the top AL wild-card spot.

—Wade Miley pitched seven effective innings, Nick Castellanos homered and the Cincinnati Reds got a sorely needed victory, topping the Chicago Cubs 4-3. New York's highest court to hear Orioles-Nats TV dispute

UNDATED (AP) — The New York Court of Appeals has agreed to hear the long-running despute between the Baltimore Orioles and Washington Nationals over television rights fees. 

The court, the highest in the state, on Sept. 2 granted the the Orioles' motion for permission to appeal. MASN was established in March 2005 after the Montreal Expos relocated to Washington and became the Nationals, moving into what had been Baltimore's exclusive broadcast territory since 1972. The Orioles have a controlling interest in the network. One arbitration decision was thrown out and a second awarded the Nationals $296.8 million for 2012-16.

—Cleveland Indians manger Terry Francona is resting comfortably after undergoing toe surgery, his second operation since stepping aside for the season in July. Francona, who had hip replacement surgery in August, had the procedure Tuesday at the Cleveland Clinic. The 62-year-old hobbled around in a walking boot for months before deciding to leave the team to address his medical issues. 

—New York Mets President Sandy Alderson says he's had little communication with acting general manager Zack Scott, who was arrested last week on a charge of driving while intoxicated. Alderson said he has reached out to Scott on a couple of occasions since the arrest. The Mets placed Scott on paid administrative leave following his arrest. Scott has pleaded not guilty to the charge and three traffic violations.

Seahawks, Sounders, Kraken to require proof of vaccination

UNDATED (AP) —The Seahawks, Sounders and Kraken say they will require proof of vaccination for all fans 12 or older attending the teams' home games. 

The Mariners also say they will require proof of vaccination beginning in October should the team make the playoffs. The Seahawks and Sounders will accept proof of vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test taken within 72 hours of an event, beginning with the Seahawks' home opener on Sept. 19 against Tennessee. The University of Washington and Washington State University are also requiring a negative test or proof of vaccination. Washington's begins Sept. 25. Washington State's will begin in October. The Kraken are requiring proof of vaccination. Their first home game is scheduled for Oct. 23 against Vancouver.

— Pittsburgh Steelers coach Mike Tomlin is optimistic All-Pro outside linebacker T.J. Watt will be available when the defending AFC North champions open the season in Buffalo. The three-time Pro Bowler is entering the final year of his contract and negotiations on a possible extension are ongoing. If Watt for some reason can't go, veteran Melvin Ingram will likely get the start against the Bills.

—Denver Broncos outside linebacker Bradley Chubb has been detained on a failure to appear warrant related to traffic offenses. Court records show Chubb failed to appear in court Aug. 6 to face charges from May. The fourth-year pro is coming off a Pro Bowl berth but underwent arthroscopic ankle surgery this offseason. He sprained his other ankle recently and missed practice all last week. 

Sam Cunningham, who starred at USC and in NFL, dies at 71

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Sam "Bam" Cunningham, an All-American fullback at Southern California whose performance against Alabama was credited with helping to integrate football in the South, has died. 

Cunningham was part of USC's all-Black backfield that helped rout a predominantly white Alabama team 42-21 in 1970. He ran for 135 yards and two touchdowns. His performance was credited with influencing the university and coach Bear Bryant to more widely recruit Black players and integrate the sport in the South. Cunningham went on to a record-setting career with the New England Patriots. He died at his home in Inglewood, California. Cunningham was 71. 

Gonzaga coach Mark Few cited for DUI in Idaho

COEUR d'ALENE, Idaho (AP) — Gonzaga basketball coach Mark Few has been cited for driving under the influence. 

The Coeur d'Alene Press and Spokesman-Review acquired a police report through a public information request that says Few was stopped Monday evening after he was "called in as driving erratic and speeding." The report stated that Few exhibited "several signs of intoxication" and that he refused to complete field sobriety tests. The report says Few provided breath samples of .119 and .120, which is above the legal limit of .08. There was no immediate comment from Gonzaga.

Rahm wins points-based best player award from PGA of America

UNDATED (AP) — Jon Rahm's birdie on the final hole of the Tour Championship earned him a trophy. He is the winner of the points-based award as player of the year by the PGA of America. Players get 10 points for a win, 30 points if it's a major. 

Rahm's only victory was the U.S. Open. But he picked up 20 points apiece for leading the scoring average and the money list. His actual score from East Lake was 14 under, same as Kevin Na. They split the win and each received 5 points. That was enough for Rahm to beat out Bryson DeChambeau.

BALTIMORE (AP) — Andrew Benintendi hit a go-ahead single in the eighth inning, then reached above the left field wall to take away a potential tying home run in the ninth, sending the Kansas City Royals over the Baltimore Orioles 3-2. Hanser Alberto homered against his former team to help the Royals win in their first visit to Camden Yards since August 2019. Salvador Perez tied it at 2 with a bloop single in the eighth for the Royals. Benintendi provided the lead with an RBI hit off Cole Sulser. — Maria Sakkari has eliminated 2019 champion Bianca Andreescu in the latest-finishing women's match in tournament history to reach the U.S. Open quarterfinals for the first time. Sakkari came back to win 6-7 (2), 7-6 (6), 6-3 as Andreescu had trouble with a left leg that was taped by a trainer during a medical timeout in the third set. Andreescu limped around between points down the stretch and her leg buckled a few times. The 3 1/2-hour match ended at nearly 2:15 a.m.

UNDATED (AP) — The San Francisco Giants continue to lead the National League West by one game over the Los Angeles Dodgers following road wins for both teams.

Thairo (TY'-roh) Estrada hit two of San Francisco's four home runs as the Giants doubled up the Rockies, 10-5. Darin Ruf and Buster Posey also went deep to give San Francisco 206 home runs this season, tops in the NL and four behind Toronto. 

Winning pitcher Kevin Gausman allowed three runs while striking out nine over seven innings. Gausman also singled and scored a run as San Francisco improved to a major league-best 88-50.

The Dodgers were 5-1 winners over the Cardinals behind Max Scherzer, who struck out 13 and permitted one unearned run and six hits in eight innings. Saints plan to practice in Dallas area through Week 2

UNDATED (AP) — The New Orleans Saints will be spending most of the next two weeks in Texas.

Head coach Sean Payton says the Saints expect the Dallas area and TCU practice facilities to serve as their home base into at least Week 2 of the NFL season.

The Saints were displaced by Hurricane Ida and had a closed practice indoors Monday at TCU. They will be there at the very least until they fly to Jacksonville to play Green Bay in a regular-season opener that had been originally scheduled for the Superdome.

Thanks to a schedule that has New Orleans playing on the road in Weeks 2 and 3, there remains a good chance that the Saints will be back in their usual home stadium when they are scheduled to host the New York Giants on Oct. 3.

UNDATED (AP) — The Tennessee Titans' COVID-19 outbreak is nearing an end even with two starting offensive linemen still on the reserve list. Not everyone around the NFL may be as healthy to kick off this season with COVID-19 proving to be an issue hovering over another season. 

The Titans' outbreak reached at least 14 with 10 of those players and five starters. Several other NFL teams may be without some players and starters for season openers. Miami and Carolina each put offensive linemen on the reserve list Monday with the Jets and Chiefs both monitoring players for possible returns.

— The Chiefs remained without All-Pro safety Tyrann Mathieu after his positive test for COVID-19 as the two-time defending AFC champions began preparing Monday for their season opener against Cleveland. — Jets wide receiver Jamison Crowder is recovering from symptoms of COVID-19 and his status for the opening game at Carolina remains uncertain. Coach Robert Saleh said Monday that Crowder is vaccinated against the virus, but the receiver's availability for the season opener will depend on how he feels and tests. 

— The Ravens agreed to a four-year, $56 million contract extension with tight end Mark Andrews, locking him up through 2025. Andrews was a Pro Bowler in 2019, when he caught 64 passes for 852 yards and 10 touchdowns. Andrews' 17 receiving touchdowns since 2019 are the most among tight ends in the NFL. 

— San Francisco rookie quarterback Trey Lance showed signs of progress in returning from a finger injury, but there are still questions about whether he will be able to play in the season opener. Lance no longer needed a splint on the index finger on his throwing hand after suffering a small chip fracture in the exhibition finale on Aug. 29. But during the open portion of practice for reporters, Lance didn't make any throws.

— Receiver Curtis Samuel took part in Washington's Labor Day practice and looks like a candidate to play in the season opener against the Chargers after missing training camp. Samuel spent time on the NFL's COVID-19 list and has been hampered by a groin injury since offseason workouts. 

Europe retains Solheim Cup with 2nd-ever win on US soil

TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) — Europe closed out its second consecutive Solheim Cup championship when Matilda Castren closed out Lizette Salas 1 up to give the visitors the decisive point in a 15-13 victory in Ohio. Leona Maguire finished off an unbeaten Labor Day weekend when she beat Jennifer Kupcho 5-and-4 to put the wheels in motion for a victory by the visitors. The win is just the second ever for Europe in the U.S., eight years after the first.

The Travelers struggled against starter Jordan Balazovic for five innings scoring no runs through five. In the sixth, the Arkansas batters were finally able to get to Balazovic. With runners on second and third, Joe Rizzo hit a line drive to left field that allowed both runners to score. That was the only damage the Travs dealt in the inning, but they left with a 2-1 lead heading into the bottom half of the sixth.

The Wind Surge could not get anything going to extend the game as they fell in the series finale by a final score of 2-1.

Jordan Balazovic had a quality start despite the two runs in the sixth. Balazovic allowed just two runs on six hits and struck out six in his 18th start of the year. Most importantly, Balazovic issued no walks on the afternoon. Zach Neff pitched 1.1 innings of scoreless and hitless relief. Neff also stuck out one. Erik Manoah pitched 1.0 inning facing the minimum and striking out one.

Wichita will return home for the remaining 12 regular season games.

Yankees put Loaisiga on IL with strained rotator cuff

UNDATED (AP) — The Yankees have placed reliever Jonathan Loaisiga (loh-AY'-see-gah) on the 10-day injured list because of a strained right rotator cuff.
