KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Catcher MJ Melendez launched 41 home runs between Northwest Arkansas (AA) and Omaha (AAA) this season to claim the Joe Bauman Award as Minor League Baseball’s 2021 home run king. Melendez becomes the third Royals’ minor league player to earn the award, joining Chris Brazell (2007) and Mike Moustakas (2010), since it was first presented in 2002.

“It’s an honor to earn the Joe Bauman Award because I look at Minor League Baseball and the number of good hitters and it’s amazing to finish the season at the top of that list,” Melendez said. “There are so many guys that I watch and catch against throughout the season, and the amount of talent in Minor League Baseball right now is incredible. It’s very humbling to be at the top of that list and I’m grateful for my teammates and coaches that pushed me throughout the season.”

Melendez, 22, who was named the Northwest Arkansas Player of the Year last week, hit the second most home runs by a Royals minor league player, trailing only Chris Hatcher’s 46 with Omaha in 1998. He recorded the 17th season of 40 or more home runs in Minor League Baseball since 1990 and first since 2016. His 41 HR are the most in a season since Kris Bryant hit 43 in 2014, while he is the first primary catcher since Todd Greene (40 in 1995) to hit 40 or more homers in a season.

The left-handed hitting catcher began the season with 28 roundtrippers in 79 games for Northwest Arkansas, before being promoted to Omaha on Aug. 9. He hit his final 13 homers in 44 games with the Storm Chasers. During a 40-game stretch from July 2-Aug. 18, Melendez didn’t go more than three games without a home run, hitting 18 during that span. He recorded six games with two HR and homered in consecutive games five times. He topped his previous career high in home runs (19 in 2018 with Wilmington) with his 20th homer on July 21 at Tulsa.

Along with his 41 homers, he also ranked second among all minor league players in RBI (103), third in total bases (280) and slugging percentage (.628) and fourth in extra-base hits (66).

Melendez was selected in the second round of the 2017 First-Year Player Draft out of Westminster Christian High School in Daytona Beach, Florida.

Witt Jr., 21, split the season between Northwest Arkansas (AA) and Omaha (AAA), and in 123 overall games, he led all minor league players with 72 extra-base hits, while he ranked second in runs scored (99) and total bases (286), fourth in homers (33) and RBI (97) and fifth in hits (144). He recorded 35 doubles, 33 home runs and 29 stolen bases, falling just short of becoming the third minor league player since 1990 to record a 30-30-30 season. However, he’s the first Royals minor leaguer to record 20+ homers and 20+ steals in a season since Alex Gordon in 2006.

In June, Witt Jr. was selected to the MLB All-Star Futures Game roster, and on July 11, he was the starting shortstop and batted leadoff for the American League at Coors Field. Just one week later, on July 18, he was promoted to Omaha, and at the time of his promotion, led all Double-A players in total bases (139), while also leading the Central in RBI (51) and tying for the division

lead in runs (44). He was second in the division in hits (72) and home runs (16). He was named the Triple-A East Player of the Week for Aug. 2-8, as he went 8-for-27 (.296) with two doubles, four home runs, 11 RBI and eight runs scored in a six-game span. He finished the month in similar fashion, claiming Triple-A East Player of the Month for August. From the time of his promotion to Omaha on July 18 to the end of the season, Witt Jr. led Triple-A players in runs scored (55), doubles (24) and extra-base hits (41), while tying for fourth in homers (17) and sixth in slugging percentage (.581).

Andy Reid returned to Philadelphia and earned his 100th career win with the Chiefs, becoming the first coach in NFL history to win 100 games with two teams. Reid's 140 victories with the Eagles are the most in franchise history. Jalen Hurts threw for a career-high 378 yards and two TDs but Philadelphia (1-3) couldn't keep up with Kansas City's high-powered offense. The Eagles had three touchdowns negated by penalty and settled for field goals three times inside the red zone.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Matt Duffy extended his hitting streak to a career-high 13 games with a pair of run-scoring singles to help the Chicago Cubs to a 3-2 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday in a game that was halted after seven innings by rain. Tommy Edman homered for St. Louis, which will face Los Angeles in the NL wild-card game on Wednesday. The Cardinals removed regulars Paul Goldschmidt and Nolan Arenado after two innings to rest for that. The Cardinals closed the regular season by winning 19 of their final 22 games, with a franchise-record, 17-game winning streak from Sept. 11-28.&nbsp;

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Andy Reid kicked off Homecoming Sunday with a record-setting win in Philadelphia, and Tom Brady finished it with one of his own against Bill Belichick in New England. The road to victory was easier for Reid. The 63-year-old coach watched Patrick Mahomes throw five touchdown passes to lead the high-powered Kansas City Chiefs to a 42-30 win over the Eagles. Reid became the first coach in NFL history to win 100 games with two teams, reaching that milestone against his old club. Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers had to grind out a 19-17 win over the Patriots that was secured when Kevin Folk hit the left upright on a 56-yard field goal in the closing seconds on a rain-soaked night.&nbsp;

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Byron Buxton and Jorge Polanco hit homers and the Minnesota Twins beat the Kansas City Royals 7-3 in their final game of the season. Royals star Salvador Perez went 0 for 2 with a walk and finished in a tie with Toronto's Vladimir Guerrero Jr. for the big league home run lead with 48. Perez wound up matching the team record for home runs set by Jorge Soler in 2019. Perez topped the majors with 121 RBIs. The Twins ended the season at 73-89 and in last place in the AL Central after winning the division the previous two years. The Royals finished at 74-88.

COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) — First-year Missouri defensive line coach Jethro Franklin has been fired a day after Tennessee ran for 452 yards and scored on 10 of 11 offensive possessions in a 62-24 blowout at Faurot Field. Tigers coach Eli Drinkwitz said in a statement that "a change in direction at the defensive line coach was needed." Defensive analyst Al Davis will move into a full-time coaching role. Franklin was hired in January to replace Brick Haley, who was replaced by Drinkwitz after his first season in charge. Missouri plays North Texas on Saturday.

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) — Johnny Russell scored twice and Sporting Kansas City beat the Houston Dynamo 4-2 on Sunday. Russell converted a penalty kick in the 16th with a shot to the left corner to tie Preki's 1996 franchise record for goals in consecutive games at five. Russell capped the scoring in the 90th. Daniel Salloi and Gadi Kinda also scored for Kansas City (15-6-7). Fafà Picault and Darwin Quintero scored for Houston's (5-12-12).&nbsp;

UNDATED (AP) — Alabama and Georgia remain the top two teams in The Associated Press college football poll after a week in which nine ranked teams lost. Iowa moved up to No. 3 and is gearing up for No. 4 Penn State in its biggest home game since the 1980s. No. 5 Cincinnati has its highest ranking in 12 years. Oklahoma, Ohio State, Oregon, Michigan and Brigham Young round out the top 10. Clemson is out of the AP Top 25 for the first time since 2014 despite beating Boston College. The Tigers had been ranked in 107 consecutive polls. Kentucky, Texas, Southern Methodist and San Diego State entered the AP Top 25.

Bucs beat Pats in Brady's return to Foxborough

UNDATED (AP) — The weather was poor, but the outcome was sunny for Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Brady was a winner in his return to Foxborough as he rallied the Bucs to a 19-17 win over New England. Brady was 22 of 43 for 269 yards with no touchdowns on a rainy Sunday night, but he engineered the fourth-quarter drive to beat his former team. The winning drive was capped by Ryan Succop's (SUK'-ups) 48-yard field goal late in the fourth quarter.

Ronald Jones had an 8-yard scoring run for the defending Super Bowl champions.

Brady broke Drew Brees' (BREEZ'-ehz) NFL career passing yardage record and became the fourth quarterback with victories against all 32 NFL teams, joining Brees, Brett Favre (fahrv) and Peyton Manning. 

New England had a chance to win, but Nick Folk's 56-yard field-goal try hit the left upright with with less than a minute to play. The Patriots are 1-3 for the first time since 2001, when Brady took over the offense. 

Patriots rookie Mac Jones finished 31 of 40 for 275 yards and two touchdowns. 

— Dak Prescott and Ezekiel Elliott were productive against the NFL's top defense as the Dallas Cowboys handed the Panthers their first loss, 36-28. Prescott threw for four touchdowns while completing 14 of his 22 passes for 188 yards. Elliott had his first 100-yard rushing game of the year for the 3-1 Cowboys, finishing with 143 on 20 carries as Dallas rolled up 245 yards on the ground.

— Andy Reid became the first NFL coach with 100 wins for two franchise as the Chiefs beat his former team, 42-30 at Philadelphia. Patrick Mahomes (mah-HOHMZ') threw three of his five touchdown passes to Tyreek Hill, who had 11 receptions for 186 yards. Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts threw for a career-high 387 yards and two TDs, but Philly had three touchdowns negated by penalty.

— Linebacker Tremaine Edmunds had the first of Buffalo's four interceptions in a 40-0 dismantling of the Texans. Micah Hyde, Tyler Matakevich and Jaquan Johnson also picked off passes and Cam Lewis forced a fumble as Buffalo made life miserable for rookie QB Davis Mills. Josh Allen finished 20 of 29 for 248 yards with two touchdowns to Justin Knox, while the Bills limited Houston to 109 total yards. 

— The Browns' defense led a 14-7 win over the Vikings, leaving Cleveland with a 3-1 record. Minnesota didn't score after Kirk Cousins hit Justin Jefferson for a touchdown pass to cap a commanding opening drive. Nick Chubb had 21 carries for 100 yards, and Kareem Hunt ran 14 times for 69 yards and a touchdown. 

— The Ravens were 23-7 winners over the Broncos as Lamar Jackson threw for 316 yards, including a 49-yard scoring strike to a diving Marquis Brown. Baltimore ran for 100 yards for the 43nd consecutive game, tying the NFL set by the Steelers in the 1970s. The Ravens knocked Broncos starting quarterback Teddy Bridgewater from the game with a concussion on his final pass of the first half.

— Aaron Rodgers connected with Randall Cobb for two touchdowns and ran for another score as the Packers won their third straight, 27-17 over the Steelers. Rodgers went 20 of 36 for 248 yards and scored the Packers' first points on a 4-yard rush. Roethlisberger threw his 400th career touchdown pass on the game's opening series and became the eighth player to reach that milestone.

— Justin Fields has his first career win after the Bears compiled 373 total yards in a 24-14 decision over the Lions. Fields completed 11 of 17 passes for 209 yards and an interception, one week after he was sacked nine times and held to one net passing yard. David Montgomery ran for 106 yards and scored on Chicago's first two possessions before leaving with a knee injury.

— Russell Wilson overcame a shaky start to throw for two touchdowns and run for a third in the Seahawks' 28-21 win versus the 49ers. Wilson connected on a 12-yard TD pass to DK Metcalf late in the first half and then produced two touchdowns in a span of less than a minute in the third quarter. The 49ers couldn't rally after losing starting quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo (gah-RAH'-poh-loh) to a calf injury at halftime and playing without injured kicker Robbie Gould (gohld) all game.

— Kyler Murray passed for 268 yards and two touchdowns as the Cardinals ripped the Rams, 37-20, giving Arizona its first 4-0 start in nine years. A.J. Green caught a 41-yard TD pass, Chase Edmonds ran for 120 yards and James Conner rushed for two short scores. The Cardinals lit up the Rams' defense for 465 total yards and scored touchdowns after two early takeaways.

— Saquon (SAY'-kwahn) Barkley ran for a 6-yard touchdown in overtime after Daniel Jones passed for a career-high 402 yards in the Giants' first win of the year, a 27-21 comeback over the Saints. New Orleans led 21-10 in the fourth quarter before Jones and Barkley combined for a 54-yard touchdown pass that ignited the Giants' comeback. Graham Gano extend the game by drilling a 48-yard field goal with 31 seconds left in regulation.

— Taylor Heinicke heaved a 30-yard touchdown pass to J.D. McKissic with 33 seconds remaining to give Washington a 34-30 triumph in Atlanta. Heinicke completed 23 of 33 passes for 290 yards and three touchdowns, two of them in the final 3:52. Cordarelle Patterson became the first Atlanta player since 2018 to score three touchdowns in a game.

— The Colts picked up their first win of the season as Carson Wentz threw a pair of touchdown passes to Mo Alie-Cox in a 27-17 victory over the Dolphins. Wentz completed 24 of 32 passes for 228 yards to help Indianapolis avoid its first 0-4 start in 10 years. Jonathan Taylor rushed for 103 yards and a score for the Colts, who outgained the Dolphins, 226-15 in the middle two quarters.

— Matt Ammendola kicked a 22-yard field goal in overtime before Randy Bullock was wide left on a 49-yarder with 15 seconds left, sending the Jets to a 27-24 win over the Titans. Zach Wilson was mostly terrific in his first NFL win, going 21 of 34 for 297 yards with touchdown passes to Corey Davis and Jamison Crowder. Ryan Tannehill found a wide-open Cameron Batson in the end zone for a tying 2-yard touchdown with 16 seconds remaining in regulation.

UNDATED (AP) — It took a team-record 107 victories and all 162 games for the San Francisco Giants to finally nail down the National League West title. They will be joined in the postseason by the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees, who wrapped up the two American League wild-card berths.

Logan Webb slammed a two-run homer and pitched brilliantly into the eighth inning of the Giants' 11-4 pounding of the Padres. Webb had a three-hitter and an 11-1 lead before allowing three straight singles in the eighth. He struck out eight and remains unbeaten since May 5.

Buster Posey drove in three runs on a pair of singles and notched his 1,500th career hit. Wilmer Flores chipped in a two-run single and Mike Yastrzemski's (ya-STREHM'-skeez) two-run double put the Giants ahead, 11-1 in the seventh.

Both the Red Sox and Yankees won in their final at-bat, giving Boston the right to host the Yanks in the AL wild-card game on Tuesday.

Rafael Devers' (DEH'-vurz) second homer of the afternoon was a tiebreaking, two-run blast in the ninth inning of the Red Sox's 7-5 downing of the Nationals in Washington. Devers collected his third and four RBIs of the game after Kyle Schwarber reached on an error.

Eduardo Rodriguez worked the eighth to improve to 13-7, two days after starting and winning the series opener against the Nats.

The Yankees pulled out a 1-0 win over the Rays on Aaron Judge's RBI single in the bottom of the ninth. The Bombers were held to just one hit until Rougned Odor (ROOG'-nehd oh-DOHR') led off the ninth with a single.

Yankees shortstop Gio Urshela made a daring catch in the sixth inning, charging recklessly into the Tampa Bay dugout.

— Trea Turner hit his second grand slam in less than 48 hours to easily wrap up the NL batting title and carry the Dodgers past the Brewers, 10-3. Turner finished with a .328 average and the Dodgers ended up with 106 wins, the most for a second-place team in major league history.

— Austin Riley drove in two runs with two hits in the Braves' 5-0 shutout of the Mets. The NL East champs allowed just three hits and reached Noah Syndergaard (SIHN'-dur-gahrd) for two runs in the first inning, including a leadoff homer by Jorge Soler (soh-LEHR').

— Matt Duffy extended his hitting streak to a career-high 13 games with a pair of run-scoring singles to help the Cubs earn a 3-2, rain-shortened win over the Cardinals. Tommy Edman homered for the Redbirds, who will visit the Dodgers for the NL wild-card game on Wednesday.

— Nick Fortes hit a tiebreaking two-run home run in the fourth inning of the Marlins' 5-4 defeat of the Phillies.

— Joey Votto capped off a resurgent season by hitting his 36th home run and Nick Castellanos (kas-tee-AH'-nohs) reached the 100-RBI plateau for the second time in in the Reds' 6-3 downing of the Pirates.

— Josh VanMeter slammed a tiebreaking homer with two out in the bottom of the ninth to give the Diamondbacks a 5-4 victory against the Rockies.

— Daz Cameron homered leading off the ninth to spark a three-run inning in the Tigers' 7-3 win over the White Sox. The AL Central champs ended a six-game winning streak and prepare to take on the Astros in the ALDS.

— The Astros pulled out a 7-6 win over the Athletics on AL batting champion Yuli Gurriel's (gur-ee-EHLZ') RBI single in the ninth inning. Gurriel hit .319 and became Houston's second player to win a batting title after Jose Altuve in 2014, '16 and '17.

— George Springer hit two home runs, including a grand slam in the Blue Jays' season-ending, 12-4 rout of the Orioles. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. launched his 48th homer, but it wasn't enough to get Toronto into the postseason.

Canucks get contracts done with Hughes and Pettersson

UNDATED (AP) — The Vancouver Canucks have signed restricted free agents Quinn Hughes and Elias Pettersson to new contracts. 

Hughes got a $47.10 million, six-year contract with a $7.85 million annual salary cap hit that puts him among the highest-paid defensemen in the NHL. 

Pettersson signed for $22.05 million over three years with a $7.35 million annual cap hit. 

— The NHL has reached out to Robin Lehner to set up an interview after the goaltender made several accusations on social media. Lehner in a series of tweets Saturday said teams give players sedatives and anxiety pills without a doctor's consent and referenced the Philadelphia Flyers and coach Alain Vigneault (VEEN'-yoh). He also accused the Buffalo Sabres of mismanaging an ankle injury when he played for them. 

Warriors forward Andrew Wiggins receives COVID-19 vaccine

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Golden State Warriors forward Andrew Wiggins has received his COVID-19 vaccine and will be eligible to play in all games. 

Wiggins faced the possibility of not being allowed into Golden State's home building at Chase Center for games come Oct. 13 when the San Francisco Department of Public Health begins requiring proof of vaccination for large indoor events.

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — Sam Burns has earned his second PGA win of the year by taking the Sanderson Farms Championship in Mississippi.

Burns ran off four birdies in a six-hole stretch to start the back nine and pulled away for a 5-under 67. Staked to a two-shot lead going down the 18th, he took a safe bogey from the greenside bunker to secure a one-shot win over resurgent Nick Watney and PGA Tour rookie Cameron Young.

Celine Boutier rallies with a 63 to win ShopRite LPGA

Rain pushes NASCAR playoff race at Talladega to Monday

Royals star Salvador Perez went 0 for 2 with a walk and finished in a tie with Toronto’s Vladimir Guerrero Jr. for the big league home run lead with 48. Perez wound up matching the team record for home runs set by Jorge Soler in 2019. Perez topped the majors with 121 RBIs. 

The Twins ended the season at 73-89 and in last place in the AL Central after winning the division the previous two years. The Royals finished at 74-88.

Chiefs outscore Eagles 42-30 Sunday

CONCORDIA – It was a comeback kind of Saturday for the Hutchinson Community College Volleyball team.

First, the Blue Dragons rallied from down two sets to defeat Cloud County in five sets (21-25, 23-25, 25-23, 25-16, 15-9) in a Jayhawk West contest. Hutchinson had to turn right around and lost first set to Highland, but won the next three in a 14-25, 25-22, 25-22, 25-15 victory over the Division II, No. 7-ranked Scotties at Arley Bryant Gym in Concordia.

The Blue Dragon improved to 14-9 overall and 5-5 in the Jayhawk West. Hutchinson plays host to No. 10-ranked Seward County at 6 p.m. on Wednesday at the Sports Arena. Cloud County is now 11-11 and 1-8. Highland is now 20-3.

The comeback against Cloud County was the first time that Hutchinson has rallied to win a match after trailing 2-0 since doing so at Seward County on October 7, 2016 in Liberal. It’s the sixth time ever for the Dragons to comeback from an 0-2 deficit.

The Blue Dragons were out-hit by the Thunderbirds .221-.103 in the opening two sets. Hutchinson hit .244 in the final three sets. Cloud County hit .134, including a negative .002 in the fourth and fifth sets.

The Blue Dragons are now 4-0 in five-set matches this season and 2-0 in five setters against Cloud County.

The four-set win over Highland was the first time that the Blue Dragons and Scotties have played since October 20, 2001. The Dragons hit a negative .077 in the first set against Highland, but improved to .232 over the final three sets.

After dropping two tight sets, the Blue Dragons trailed the Thunderbirds 6-2 early and 22-20 late in the third set. Hutch took a 23-22 lead on a Morgan Harvey kill, double block by Blondie Penaflor and Chloe Conway and a Melina Christodoulou service ace. Tied at 23, a pair of Penaflor kills extended the match with a 25-23 Dragon win.

Hutchinson took an early 7-3 lead in the fourth set and extended it to 13-6 on an Aubreigh Haxtun solo block. The Dragons had two eight-point leads in the fourth set as the defense held Cloud County to .029. The Dragons pushed the match to a fifth set on a Kristina Head back-row kill.

The Blue Dragons opened the fifth set with a 6-1 run, but Cloud County scored 8 of the next 10 to take a 9-8 lead. A Penaflor kill tied the set at nine and started a decisive 7-0 Andrea Serrano service run. Serrano had two aces, the Dragons had two blocks and Penaflor had two kills to complete the comeback.

Penaflor had a season-high 20 kills with .326 hitting on 43 attacks to lead the Blue Dragons. Christodoulou was next with 11 kills on .209 hitting. Harvey and Head had eight kills each and the Blue Dragons hit .182 for the match.

Hutchinson had 12 team blocks, the second most blocks in a single match this season. Conway had a team-high six blocks. Head and Harvey had four blocks each.

The Blue Dragons had 54 total digs led by libero Zoe Schmidt’s 16 digs. Head had 10 digs and Harvey had nine digs.

Serrano had 29 assists and freshman McKinley Johnson had 19 assists.

Natasha Dooley had 15 kills and Geradyn Palacios and Kenzie Cooper had 12 kills each to lead Cloud County, which hit .172 for the match.

After hitting a negative .077 in a decisive first-set Highland win, the Blue Dragons regained their offensive touch with .429 hitting in the second set, .139 in the third set and .393 in a dominant fourth set.

Christodoulou hammered home 12 kills on a season-high .474 hitting with three block assists to lead the Blue Dragons.

Sophie Connor had nine kills and Head had eight kills for the Dragons, who hit .232 against the Scotties.

Serrano had 21 assists and five digs. Johnson had 17 assists.

The Blue Dragons had 10 or more services aces for the ninth time this season with 15 aces. Head had five aces, Johnson had four and Connor had three aces.

Schmidt had 13 digs to lead the Dragons defensively.

McKenna Rhodes and Jenna Pfau had 13 kills each to lead Highland.

Dragons rally twice for two Saturday wins

COLBY – Andrew Holt, Camilo Turin and Aaron Geissinger all posted career-low 8,000-meter times as the Hutchinson Community College men’s cross country team to a fourth-place finish at the Region VI Preview on Saturday at Meadow Lake Golf Course in Colby.

The Blue Dragons and five other Region VI teams were getting an early look at the same course that will be the site of the 2021 Region VI Cross Country Championships, which will be hosted by Colby Community College on Saturday, 30.

Hutchinson had three others finish in the Top 20 in a fourth-place team showing. The Blue Dragons had 82 points, the third-highest placing Region VI team in the field. Colorado College won the team championship with 42 points. Northwest Tech was second with 49 points. Garden City had 77 points, then the Blue Dragons and Dodge City with 108 team points.

Freshman Collin Oswalt was the only Blue Dragon to finish in the Top 10, crossing the finish line 10th in a time of 26:02.62.

Holt posted his second-consecutive PR at 8,000 meters with a 16th-place showing in a time of 26:44.60.

Turin had his first Top 20 finish with a 19th-place showing in a season-best time of 27:06.71.

Geissinger also turned in a second-straight PR with a time of 28:05.80. He finished 31st overall.

Freshman Carsyn Turpin placed 33rd in a time of 28:09.68.

The Blue Dragons will run in back-to-back weeks for the only time this season. Hutchinson travels to the Fort Hays State Tiger open next Saturday in Victoria, Kansas.

Three Dragons post PRs in Region VI preview

COLBY – Getting an early look at the Region VI Championship course on Saturday, the Hutchinson Community College women’s cross country team finished third in the Region VI Preview at Meadow Lake Golf Course in Colby.

Led by sophomore All-American Louise Cocking, the Blue Dragons finished with 82 team points. Colorado College won the team title with 42 points, edging Region VI foe Northwest Tech with 49 points.

Cocking posted her third Top 5 finish of the season and seventh of her career with a fifth-place performance in a time of 19:28.21. Cocking was the second-highest Region VI runner to finish behind Colby’s Regan Hogsden (19:25.79). Colorado College’s Elliot Singer won the women’s individual race with a time of 18:19.99.

Freshman Anastasia Mayer was the second Blue Dragon to place, crossing the finish line in 21:11.59 over the 5K course. Sophomore Noelle Higaldo placed 34th in 21:47.68. Freshman Michele Gage finished 38th in a time of 22:13.34. Freshman Sydney Grauer was 40th in a time of 22:24.05.

Sophomore Izzy Wheeler placed 44th in 23:01.67. Sophomore Jurney Yung placed 46th in 23:51.51.

The 28 points was the most ever scored by the Cyclones in an opening period, helping coach Matt Campbell’s team improve its record to 3-2 overall and 1-1 in the Big 12.

It was the most total points Iowa State has scored in its long-running series with the Jayhawks.

K-State loses tight game to Oklahoma Saturday

Royals shut out by Twins Saturday

GARDEN CITY, Kan. -- Dylan Laible threw 5 of 6 for 124 yards and two touchdowns in the fourth quarter to power the Blue Dragons (2-2) past No. 8 Garden City (2-2).

Laible finished just 14 of 31 for 222 yards, but had two touchdowns on five completions in the final frame. He hit Cortez Braham from 44 yards out to give Hutchinson a 17-16 lead with 9:45 left to play.

The Blue Dragons added another touchdown pass with 5:32 remaining when Micah Woods caught his first score of the season.

A defensive battle turned into an offensive explosion for Hutchinson in the fourth quarter.

"Compete and be disciplined," was the halftime message from Drew Dallas to his team. Hutchinson was down 13-7 at the break after a leaping penalty gave Garden City a fresh set of downs from the 3 yard line. The Broncbusters needed one run from Dedrick Talbert to change the outcome of the drive.

Garden City was content to go up 9-7 after a short field goal, but Hutchinson was called for a leaping penalty, a personal foul that carries an automatic first down.

Garden City actually declined the penalty and was set to kick off when officials stopped play for a conference. After deliberation, the ball was marked half the distance to the goal for Garden City. The Broncbusters opted to take the penalty once they realized it carried an automatic first down.

It was the fourth touchdown in as many games that the Dragons have allowed just before halftime.

Hutchinson got a 26-yard field goal from C.J. Moya in the third quarter to pull within three. Garden City answered with a 42-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter.

It was the last time the Broncbusters would put points on the board.

"They tightened down in the red zone," Dallas said about his defense.

Outside of a tough loss to Butler, the defense has been stellar. The defense needed some help from the offense -- and that's what it got.

Laible was on fire in the final 13 minutes of the game. His ability to strike down the field paired well with the running of Anwar Lewis, who followed his 210-yard performance against Fort Scott with a 164-yard night Saturday.

The Dragon offense struggled with just one conversion on third down (1 of 11), but the single conversion came when Hutchinson needed it most. Lewis broke off the first-down run to allow the Dragons to go into Victory Formation.

Lewis was the only Dragon runner to register positive yardage.

He started the night with an 84-yard touchdown scamper. It came on just the second play from scrimmage. Despite the 84 yards, Hutchinson had 78 at the half. The nine other Dragon runs netted negative 6 yards in the first half.

Garden City answered the Lewis run with a 77-yard touchdown from William Knight. Outside of the two big plays just seven minutes in, the rest of the game was a defensive struggle until the Hutchinson offense hit a stride in the fourth.

"They've grown up over the course of the last couple of weeks," Dallas said of his team that started No. 1 in the nation before losing the first two games of the year. "They saw flashes of what they're capable of doing."

Fans had wondered where the spring team that won a national championship had gone. Fans who made the trip to Garden City got to see that team in the fourth quarter.

FINAL: Hutchinson 24 Garden City 16

Martavius French led the defense with 15 tackles, a sack and 1.5 tackles for loss. Davion Westmoreland added 11 tackles and two tackles for loss. R.J. Evans came up with a huge sack late in the game and finished with eight tackles, 2.5 for loss. The defense held Garden City to 3 of 17 on third down.

Juwon Gaston broke up a potential touchdown in the third quarter. His breakup led to a missed 47-yard field goal from William Greig, Garden City's punter who was called into placekicking duty after Jason Hernandez missed an extra point that never got higher than the crossbar and shanked a 24-yard field goal.

Rhett Ricedorff nearly connected with Martiel Singleton on Garden City's final possession, but the ball popped free at the last moment.

Hutchinson returns home next Saturday for homecoming and a matchup with No. 2 Independence (5-0).

Jason, a four-time Pro Bowl center, is one of only two remaining healthy starters on Philadelphia’s offensive line. Travis, a six-time Pro Bowl tight end, is in an unfamiliar spot with the two-time defending AFC champion Chiefs, who haven’t had a losing record since Week 10 of the 2015 season.
