KANSAS CITY, MO. (October 25, 2021) – Kansas City Royals catcher Salvador Perez has been named a finalist for the 2021 Louisville Silver Slugger Award, as announced by Louisville Slugger Monday. Perez is one of three finalists among American League catchers, joining Tampa Bay’s Mike Zunino and New York’s Gary Sánchez. Finalists are based on votes cast by managers and coaches in each league, to determine the best offensive producers at each position.

The Louisville Silver Slugger Award winners will be announced on MLB Network during a one-hour telecast beginning at 5:00 p.m. CT on Thursday, Nov. 11.

Perez, a three-time Louisville Silver Slugger winner, tied for the Major League lead with 48 home runs in 2021, becoming the first Royal to hold at least a share of the Majors lead in home runs. Salvy also led the Majors with 121 RBI, becoming just the second Royal to do so, joining Hal McRae, who had a Majors-best 133 RBI in 1982. He became the sixth different player to lead the Majors in home runs and RBI in the last 30 years, joining Giancarlo Stanton in 2017, Chris Davis in 2013, Miguel Cabrera in 2012, Ryan Howard in 2006 and 2008 and Álex Rodríguez in 2002 and 2007. Perez became the second primary catcher to lead the Majors in HR and RBI, joining Johnny Bench, who did it in 1970 and 1972.

Perez’s 48 home runs were the most in a single season by a player who played at least 75% of his games at catcher, three more than the previous benchmark held by Bench, who hit 45 home runs in 1970. Salvy hit 33 home runs as a catcher—the other 15 came as a designated hitter—which fell just two shy of Iván Rodríguez’s American League record of 35 HR as a catcher, set in 1999, according to Elias.

Should Perez win the award (which was established in 1980), it would be his fourth career honor, following 2016, 2018 and 2020, which would pass George Brett for the most in franchise history. He would become the 10th player to win at least four Louisville Silver Slugger Awards as a catcher, and would be the first American League catcher to earn the honor in consecutive seasons since Joe Mauer won it in three straight years from 2008-10.

The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Sunday night because the team hadn't revealed the hiring publicy. The Cardinals dismissed Shildt, the former National League manager of the year, over organizational differences on Oct. 14, a week after St. Louis lost to the Los Angeles Dodgers on a walk-off homer in the wild-card game. The Athletic first reported Sunday night that Marmol would be introduced the next morning.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Ryan Tannehill threw for 270 yards and a touchdown, and he also ran for a score and the Tennessee Titans routed the Kansas City Chiefs 27-3 Sunday for their fifth win in six games. This also was the second victory in six days for the Titans over teams that played for the AFC championship in January. They edged Buffalo 34-31 on Monday night. They followed that by simply dominating the two-time defending AFC champs as Tennessee jumped out to a 27-0 halftime lead. The Chiefs now have lost two of three and dropped to 1-4 in the AFC this season.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes takes the blame for his two turnovers against Tennessee trying too hard to make something happen. That still leaves the Kansas City Chiefs with a big turnover problem. It's an issue this team hadn't dealt with much in hosting the AFC championship game the past three seasons. The Chiefs turned the ball over three times Sunday, losing 27-3 to Tennessee. The Titans turned an interception of Mahomes and his fumble into 10 points late in the first half. Kansas City has one more turnover already this season than the 16 giveaways all of 2020.

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) — Kyle Larson drove to his ninth victory of the season and most meaningful to date in his new job with Hendrick Motorsports. Larson drove to victory lane at Kansas Speedway on Sunday, the 17th anniversary of a Hendrick plane crash that killed all 10 people aboard. The plane was traveling to a race in Virginia and among those killed was Rick Hendrick's only son. Larson's No. 5 is stylized to resemble how the car looked when Ricky Hendrick drove it and team owner Hendrick texted Larson before the race to stress what a win would mean to him.&nbsp;

UNDATED (AP) — Alabama inched up to No. 3 in The Associated Press college football behind top-ranked Georgia and No. 2 Cincinnati. The Bulldogs are a unanimous No. 1 for the third straight week in the AP Top 25 presented by Regions Bank and the Bearcats remain second. The Crimson Tide jumped up a spot past Oklahoma after blowing out Tennessee. The now fourth-ranked Sooners were shut out in the first half against Kansas before scoring 35 in the second half and pulling away late. No. 5 Ohio State and No. 6 Michigan both held their spots. Penn State dropped 12 spots to No. 20 after losing in a record nine overtime periods to Illinois. Oklahoma State fell from No. 8 to 15th after losing at Iowa State.

UNDATED (AP) — The Baltimore Ravens have company atop the AFC North.

Joe Burrow threw for a career-high 416 yards and three touchdowns, including a pivotal 82-yarder to rookie Ja'Marr Chase in the third quarter of Cincinnati's 41-17 dismantling of the Ravens in Baltimore. Chase had eight catches for 201 yards, easily the most productive performance of his impressive debut season. He also set an NFL record for most yards receiving over his first seven career games.

Lamar Jackson threw for 257 yards and ran for 88, but he was sacked five times as the Ravens had their five-game winning streak snapped. 

Both teams are 5-2, but the Bengals hold the tiebreaker after beating Baltimore.

— The Cardinals remain the league's only unbeaten team after Kyler Murray completed 20 of 28 passes for 261 yards, three touchdowns and one interception in a 31-5 thrashing of the Texans. DeAndre Hopkins caught a touchdown pass against his former team and Zach Ertz grabbed a scoring pass for his new team, helping the Cardinals improve to 7-0 for the first time since 1974. James Conner added an 18-yard touchdown run and Ertz had a 47-yard scoring grab, the longest of his career.

— Tom Brady became the first player to throw 600 career touchdown passes, reaching the milestone in the Buccaneers' 38-3 thrashing of the Bears. Brady completed 20 of 36 passes for 211 yards and four TDs as the Bucs improved to 6-1, the best seven-game start in franchise history. Tampa Bay's defense had three interceptions, sacked Justin Fields four times and caused the quarterback to fumble twice.

— The Packers earned their sixth consecutive win as Aaron Rodgers went 27 of 35 for 274 yards and three touchdowns in their 24-10 decision over Washington. Davante Adams, Allen Lazard and Robert Tonyan provided the scoring grabs for the NFC North leaders. Washington outgained Green Bay 430-304 but had five scoreless trips inside the Packers 30-yard line, including back-to-back series that ended inside the 5.

— Matthew Stafford passed for 334 yards and three touchdowns against his former team, guiding the Rams' offense to a 28-19 victory against the Lions. Cooper Kupp had 10 catches for 156 yards and two touchdowns for the Rams, including the go-ahead score with 13:59 to play. Goff passed for 268 yards and nearly led the 0-7 Lions to an upset win in his first meeting with the Rams since they traded him to Detroit for Stafford.

— Ryan Tannehill threw for a touchdown and ran for another in the Titans' 27-3 stifling of the Chiefs. Tannehill amassed 270 passing yards and Tennessee turned three Kansas City turnovers into 10 points as the 5-2 Titans completed a six-day sweep of last season's AFC title game participants. Patrick Mahomes (mah-HOHMZ') turned the ball over twice and was sacked four times.

— The Raiders earned a 33-22 victory against the Eagles as Derek Carr threw for 323 yards, completing 31 of 34 pass attempts with one touchdown. Four different Raiders scored touchdowns as Kenyon Drake and Bryan Edwards found the end zone in the third quarter. Las Vegas lost running back Josh Jacobs to a chest injury after he ran for 29 yards on six attempts, including one touchdown.

— Matt Ryan passed for 336 yards, and Younghoe Koo made a 36-yard field goal as time expired to give the Falcons a 30-28 win over the 1-5 Dolphins. Pitts had seven catches for 163 yards, the last 28 of those on a sideline route with just under two minutes left. Koo's third field goal of the game saved Atlanta after the 3-3 Falcons wasted a 13-point fourth-quarter lead.

— Daniel Jones tossed a 5-yard scoring pass and made a spectacular one-handed 16-yard catch on the game's only meaningful touchdown drive in leading the Giants' 25-3 victory over the Panthers. Jones finished 23 of 33 for 203 yards and had six carries for 30 yards. Graham Gano (gah-NOH') kicked field goals of 49, 53 and 44 yards as the 2-5 Giants handed Carolina its fourth consecutive loss since a 3-0 start.

— The Patriots enjoyed a 54-13 laugher over the Jets as rookie Mac Jones threw two touchdown passes in his first 300-yard game. Damien Harris and J.J. Taylor ran for two TDs to help New England earn its 12th straight victory and sixth consecutive season sweep over the 1-5 Jets. Jones finished 24 of 36 for 307 yards, and Harris rushed 14 times for 106 yards for the 3-4 Patriots.

— Carson Wentz threw for a pair of scores and ran for a TD to lead the Colts to a rain-soaked 30-18 victory over the 49ers. Jimmy Garoppolo (gah-RAH'-poh-loh) threw for 181 yards, lost a fumble, threw two interceptions and struggled to engineer drives in his first game back after missing one with a calf injury. The 2-4 Niners have dropped four in a row and the Colts are 3-1 since an 0-3 start.

UNDATED (AP) — The Charlotte Hornets are 3-0 for the first time in franchise history.

Miles Bridges had 32 points and nine rebounds, Ish Smith added 11 of his 15 points in the fourth quarter of the Hornets' 111-95 win at Brooklyn. LaMelo Ball had 18 points, six rebounds and five assists to help Charlotte drop the Nets to 1-2.

Kevin Durant scored 38 points for the Nets.

There was a demonstration outside Barclays Center before the Nets' home opener. Supporters of Nets guard Kyrie Irving chanted "Let Kyrie play! Let Kyrie play!" 

A small group even broke through barriers and got all the way to the front entrance of the building, forcing arena officials to briefly close the doors while fans were trying to get in.

Irving is not with the Nets because of his refusal to get vaccinated against COVID-19.

— Seth Curry delivered 23 of his 28 points in the first quarter to help the 76ers beat the Thunder, 115-103. Joel Embiid (joh-EHL' ehm-BEED') added 22 points and nine rebounds for Philadelphia. 

— Terrence Ross scored all 22 of his points in the fourth quarter as the Magic dealt the Knicks their first loss of the season, 110-104. Cole Anthony recorded his first career double-double with 29 points and a career-high 16 rebounds.

— Carmelo Anthony furnished 28 points and Anthony Davis had 22 in the Lakers' first win of the season, 121-118 versus the Grizzlies. Memphis star Ja (jah) Morant poured in 40 points but missed a potential game-tying free throw with 2.5 seconds left.

— The Warriors are 3-0 after Stephen Curry contributed 27 points, 10 assists and seven rebounds to a 119-107 decision over the Kings. Jordan Poole added 22 points and Curry became the first player in team history with 5,000 assists.

— The Celtics avoided their first 0-3 start in seven years as Jayson Tatum had 31 points and nine rebounds in their 107-97 victory against Houston. Al Horford added 11 of his 17 points in the third period and finished with 10 rebounds.

UNDATED (AP) — The Boston Bruins have ended the San Jose Sharks' perfect start to the season.

Brad Marchand scored 28 seconds into the game and added an assist as the Bruins dealt the Sharks their first loss in five games, 4-3. David Pastrnak (PAHS'-tur-nahk) and Derek Forbort each had a goal and an assist for the B's, who hung on after San Jose tallied twice over the final 6:41.

Linus Ullmark (LEE'-nuhs OOL'-mahrk) finished with 23 saves in the victory.

— The Blackhawks remain winless after Lucas Raymond had three goals and an assist in the Red Wings' 6-3 verdict over Chicago. The No. 4 overall pick in last year's draft recorded his first career hat trick in his sixth NHL game.

— Roman Josi (YOH'-see) had a four-point game and Connor Ingram won his first NHL start as the Predators handed the Wild their first loss in five games this season, 5-2. Josi had a goal and three assists to support Ingram's 33 save effort.

Hawks have 3 more positive COVID-19 tests

CHICAGO (AP) — Blackhawks defenseman Riley Stillman and forward Jujhar Khaira joined Patrick Kane in the NHL's COVID-19 protocol before Sunday's game against the Red Wings.

The Blackhawks announced Sunday morning that forward Ryan Carpenter and defenseman Erik Gustafsson had been removed from COVID-19 protocol. But there was no word on Kane.

Assistant Marc Crawford was prevented from coaching on Sunday because of the protocol.

Astros' Valdez to start Game 1 of World Series vs Braves

HOUSTON (AP) — The starting pitchers have been announced for Game 1 of the World Series between the Houston Astros and visiting Atlanta Braves.

Framber Valdez gets the nod for the Astros following a brilliant performance in his previous start. He is the only hurler in the postseason to last eight innings, allowing one run and three hits in a Game 5 victory over the Red Sox in the AL Championship Series.

The Braves will counter with Charlie Morton, who pitched for Houston from 2017-18 and got the win in Game 7 of the 2017 World Series.

HOUSTON (AP) — Baseball's ninth work stoppage and first in 26 years appears almost certain to start Dec. 2, freezing the free-agent market and threatening the start of spring training in February.

Negotiations have been taking place since last spring, and each side thinks the other has not made proposals that will lead toward an agreement replacing the five-year contract that expires at 11:59 p.m. EST on Dec. 1.

The luxury tax system that started with the 2003 season sunsets with the expiration of the labor contract, with the exception of completing accounting and payments for the 2021 tax year. Uncertainty over the 2022 season probably will cause high-spending clubs to delay reaching pricier player agreements.

Larson puts bright spot on sad anniversary for Hendrick

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) — Kyle Larson's series-high ninth win of the year comes on a most meaningful date in his new job with Hendrick Motorsports.

PGA TOUR CHAMPIONS-DOMINION ENERGY CLASSIC

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Bernhard Langer has become the oldest winner in PGA Tour Champions history by beating Doug Barron with a 6-foot birdie putt on the first hole of a playoff in the Dominion Energy Charity Classic.

Langer closed with a 3-under 69, also birdieing the par-5 18th in regulation to match Barron at 14-under. 

At 64 years, 1 month, 27 days, Langer broke the age record of 63 years, 5 months, 4 days set by Scott Hoch when he teamed with Tom Pernice (pur-NEES') Jr. to win in the 2019 Bass Pro Shops Legends of Golf.

Second-round leader Steve Flesch was third at 12 under after a 73.

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Max Verstappen held off Formula One title rival Lewis Hamilton over the final thrilling laps of the U.S. Grand Prix in Texas.

Verstappen's eighth win of the season gives him a 12-point lead over Hamilton with five races remaining. He is seeking his first F1 title.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Ryan Tannehill threw for 270 yards and a touchdown, and he also ran for a score and the Tennessee Titans routed the Kansas City Chiefs 27-3 Sunday for their fifth win in six games. 

This also was the second victory in six days for the Titans over teams that played for the AFC championship in January. They edged Buffalo 34-31 on Monday night. They followed that by simply dominating the two-time defending AFC champs as Tennessee jumped out to a 27-0 halftime lead. 

The Chiefs now have lost two of three and dropped to 1-4 in the AFC this season.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutch High volleyball team is headed to state.

The Salthawk squad won over Wichita Heights 25-7, 25-7 to advance to the final against Wichita North, where they swept 25-5, 25-10. 

State is at the Tony's Pizza Events Center beginning October 29.

Pretty Prairie also is headed to state, as they won over Oxford 25-11, 25-11 and then defeated Norwich 25-15, 25-14 to punch their ticket to Dodge City on Friday.

Hutchinson-Central Christian will also play at state, after wins over Caldwell 25-6, 25-2, Argonia 27-25, 25-20 and Attica 25-14, 25-13.

They will play at White Auditorium in Emporia on Friday.

Hutchinson, Pretty Prairie, Central Christian all win substates in VB

HUTCHINSON, Kan. -- Anwar Lewis came into Saturday's matchup with Dodge City (1-6) with two streaks intact: four straight games with 100-plus rushing yards and five straight games with a touchdown.

The Conquistadors held Lewis to just 29 rushing yards. He did get a touchdown late to extend that streak to six games.

Despite 29 yards from Lewis (seven in the first half), Hutchinson (4-3) went up 28-0 early behind a strong first quarter from Dylan Laible.

"It was great to see progress being made," coach Drew Dallas said. Despite the 20-7 victory last week at Highland, Dallas didn't see the improvement he saw Saturday in Dodge City.

Dallas credited the Conquistador defense for limiting Lewis.

Laible ended the first quarter with four touchdown passes on 7 of 9 throwing for 187 yards. He threw for 215 yards in the first half alone. The Conquistador defense came into the game giving up 215 passing yards on average per game.

Laible's first TD came from 11 yards out when he hit Cortez Braham in the corner of the end zone to cap a 5-play, 38-yard drive that took just 1:50 0ff the clock.

Laible then connected with Micah Woods on an intermediate throw that Woods turned into a 57-yard touchdown to put Hutchinson up 14-0 with less than seven minutes gone.

With 4:21 left in the first quarter, Laible found Braham again, this time from 15 yards away. Laible capped off his great first quarter of play with a 39-yard TD pass to Rykem Laney, who entered the contest with 49 receiving yards on the year.

Hutchinson had a comfortable 28-0 lead heading into the second quarter when Dodge City put together an 8-play, 64-yard drive. The Dragon defense, however, held the Conquistadors to a 28-yard field goal.

Dodge City struck again quickly when Willie Gaines broke free on an 80-yard punt return for six. His longest return of the year had been for 12 yards and Gaines averaged just 4.7 yards per return before the house call.

Hutchinson took a 28-10 lead into halftime.

Laible got his fifth passing touchdown of the day when he connected with Malik Benson for 81 yards. Benson finished the day with 187 receiving yards on five receptions.

Laible finished with 363 passing yards. He was 16 of 24 with five touchdowns.

Anwar Lewis started to hit a groove in the fourth quarter when he put together 20 strong yards on a drive he finished off with a 2-yard TD. Hutchinson went up 42-17 with 12:33 left and started substituting offensively.

Dodge City got a 9-yard touchdown run from Tyler Curtis to close out the third quarter. Curtis finished with 77 yards rushing on 18 carries.

C.J. Hall led the Conquistador rushing attack with 114 yards. Dodge City finished with 209 rushing yards, but only 83 passing yards.

Quarterback Rashad McKee went 13 for 22 for 83 yards. He was sacked twice and threw an interception at the goal line to Juwon Gaston.

Daisean Cash only completed one of his three passes, but it was for a touchdown to Marcello Bussey for 14 yards.

The sixth passing touchdown tied a program record for the Blue Dragons. It was the sixth time in history Hutchinson finished with six passing scores.

FINAL: Hutchinson 49 Dodge City 17

Hutchinson has next week off before conference playoffs in two weeks. The final week of the season will determine final standings for the playoff run. If Hutchinson can get a top-4 seed, the Dragons would host the opening-round game.

"We talked about building positive momentum," Dallas said, "and we definitely did that."

"We're excited (about) what we have to look forward to," Dallas said about the playoffs.

Micah Woods caught three passes for 76 yards and a touchdown.

Cortez Braham caught three passes, two for touchdowns, and finished with 60 yards.

Tim Byrd Jr. led the Dragon rushing attack with 34 yards.

On a beautiful day for special teams, Alfonso Deleon averaged 50.6 yards per punt. He had a better average on the day than Corry Wilhoit (44.6 yards per punt) -- the nation's leader.

 </figure>By DAREN DUNNHutch&nbsp;PostHUTCHINSON, Kan. -- Anwar Lewis came into Saturday's matchup with Dodge City (1-6) with two streaks intact: four straight games with 100-plus rushing yards and five straight games with a touchdown.The Conquistadors held Lewis to just 29 rushing yards. He did get a touchdown late to extend that streak to six games.Despite 29 yards from Lewis (seven in the first half), Hutchinson (4-3) went up 28-0 early behind a strong first quarter from Dylan Laible."It was great to see progress being made," coach Drew Dallas said. Despite the 20-7 victory last week at Highland, Dallas didn't see the improvement he saw Saturday in Dodge City.Dallas credited the Conquistador defense for limiting Lewis.Laible ended the first quarter with four touchdown passes on 7 of 9 throwing for 187 yards. He threw for 215 yards in the first half alone. The Conquistador defense came into the game giving up 215 passing yards on average per game.Laible's first TD came from 11 yards out when he hit Cortez Braham in the corner of the end zone to cap a 5-play, 38-yard drive that took just 1:50 0ff the clock.Laible then connected with Micah Woods on an intermediate throw that Woods turned into a 57-yard touchdown to put Hutchinson up 14-0 with less than seven minutes gone.With 4:21 left in the first quarter, Laible found Braham again, this time from 15 yards away. Laible capped off his great first quarter of play with a 39-yard TD pass to Rykem Laney, who entered the contest with 49 receiving yards on the year.Hutchinson had a comfortable 28-0 lead heading into the second quarter when Dodge City put together an 8-play, 64-yard drive. The Dragon defense, however, held the Conquistadors to a 28-yard field goal.Dodge City struck again quickly when Willie Gaines broke free on an 80-yard punt return for six. His longest return of the year had been for 12 yards and Gaines averaged just 4.7 yards per return before the house call.Hutchinson took a 28-10 lead into halftime.Laible got his fifth passing touchdown of the day when he connected with Malik Benson for 81 yards. Benson finished the day with 187 receiving yards on five receptions.Laible finished with 363 passing yards. He was 16 of 24 with five touchdowns.Anwar Lewis started to hit a groove in the fourth quarter when he put together 20 strong yards on a drive he finished off with a 2-yard TD. Hutchinson went up 42-17 with 12:33 left and started substituting offensively.Dodge City got a 9-yard touchdown run from Tyler Curtis to close out the third quarter. Curtis finished with 77 yards rushing on 18 carries.C.J. Hall led the Conquistador rushing attack with 114 yards. Dodge City finished with 209 rushing yards, but only 83 passing yards.Quarterback Rashad McKee went 13 for 22 for 83 yards. He was sacked twice and threw an interception at the goal line to Juwon Gaston.Daisean Cash only completed one of his three passes, but it was for a touchdown to Marcello Bussey for 14 yards.The sixth passing touchdown tied a program record for the Blue Dragons. It was the sixth time in history Hutchinson finished with six passing scores.FINAL: Hutchinson 49 Dodge City 17Hutchinson has next week off before conference playoffs in two weeks. The final week of the season will determine final standings for the playoff run. If Hutchinson can get a top-4 seed, the Dragons would host the opening-round game."We talked about building positive momentum," Dallas said, "and we definitely did that.""We're excited (about) what we have to look forward to," Dallas said about the playoffs.Micah Woods caught three passes for 76 yards and a touchdown.Cortez Braham caught three passes, two for touchdowns, and finished with 60 yards.Tim Byrd Jr. led the Dragon rushing attack with 34 yards.On a beautiful day for special teams, Alfonso Deleon averaged 50.6 yards per punt. He had a better average on the day than Corry Wilhoit (44.6 yards per punt) -- the nation's leader.

(AP) — Chiefs coaches and athletic trainers occasionally force Travis Kelce to take a limited role in practice, just as they did this week as the team prepares to visit the Tennessee Titans on Sunday. It's usually the last thing the 32-year-old tight end wants to do. There's no doubt Kelce will take the field on Sunday against the Titans, yet his career hardly started as an NFL iron man. He played just one game as a rookie in 2013 without a catch before a microfracture knee surgery ended his season. Since then, Kelce has played 116 games while sitting out just twice – season finales in 2017 and 2020 when head coach Andy Reid rested his starters. He's also made a catch in each of those 116 games. &nbsp;

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs are in catch-up mode sitting at the bottom of the AFC West they've won the past five seasons. The Tennessee Titans have an opportunity to prove they're a team to be reckoned with in the AFC. Now the Chiefs visit Tennessee on Sunday in the first game since Kansas City beat the Titans in January 2020 for the first of back-to-back AFC championships. Titans quarterback says that was two years ago and they're not to get hung up on that loss. Tennessee has won four of five. The Chiefs are 1-3 against AFC teams this season.&nbsp;

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Tensions are high in NASCAR as the season races toward next month's championship finales. Drivers are pushing hard and and tempers are rising. Chase Briscoe and Denny Hamlin had a terse exchange on social media this week over the race in Texas. It brings up key questions: Should non-playoff drivers move out of the way of title contenders? Are drivers taking too many risks trying to make it to the championship round? The Xfinity and Cup series are in Kansas this weekend.

Each of the last six meetings has been decided by seven points or less with the Cowboys winning all but one. Four of their six wins this season have been by eight points or less. Coach Mike Gundy says his unbeaten Cowboys don't have the type of team that is going to blow out any opponent. Iowa State has posted two straight convincing wins over Kansas and Kansas State.

The Red Raiders have done it just once the past five years. The Wildcats have won nine of the past 10 in the series but are on an eight-game losing streak in league games going back to last season. That's the longest skid since Kansas State joined the Big 12 in 1996.

COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) — Missouri's top four scorers have left with Dru Smith and Jeremiah Tilmon graduating, Xavier Pinson transferring to LSU and Mark Smith heading across the border to Kansas State. Drew Buggs also entered the transfer portal. That left Kobe Brown and Javon Pickett as the only Tigers who played regular minutes last year. Coach Cuonzo Martin has fortified his roster with Kansas State transfer Dajuan Gordon and three other Division I transfers along with a loaded freshman class. The hope now is they come together quickly for a tough nonconference schedule.

UNDATED (AP) — Fifth-ranked Ohio State plays at Indiana on Saturday in one of the top games in the Big Ten. The Buckeyes have the No. 1 offense in the country and their defense is picking up steam. No. 25 Purdue has its first ranking since 2007 and will match its conference-best passing offense against visiting Wisconsin's the top pass defense. Sixth-ranked Michigan will host Northwestern. The Wolverines have won 11 of the last 12 against the Wildcats. No. 7 Penn State has not named a starter for its home game against Illinois. Maryland is a 4 1/2-point underdog at Minnesota.&nbsp;

UNDATED (AP) — Eight-ranked and undefeated Oklahoma State is preparing to play an Iowa State team that began this season in the top 10. The Cyclones then lost at home to Iowa before dropping their Big 12 opener at Baylor. They could still get back in position to make their second Big 12 championship game in a row. A win over Oklahoma State would provide a big boost. Both the Cyclones and Cowboys still have to play third-ranked and six-time defending champ Oklahoma. In other Big 12 games this week, Oklahoma is at Kansas; West Virginia goes to TCU; and Kansas State visits Texas Tech.&nbsp;

UNDATED (AP) — The Los Angeles Dodgers are still alive in the NL Championship Series after snapping out of their hitting funk while getting an outstanding performance from six relievers.

Chris Taylor slammed three home runs and drove in six as the Dodgers clobbered the Braves, 11-2 in Game 5, sending the series back to Atlanta. Taylor belted two-run homers in the second and fifth innings before delivering a solo shot. He overshadowed teammate AJ Pollock, who provided a solo shot and a three-run blast. 

Taylor had four of the Dodgers' 17 hits, while Pollock, Trea Turner and Cody Bellinger had three apiece.

The LA bullpen limited Atlanta to three runs while striking out nine over 8 1/3 innings. Dodgers relievers allowed their team to rebound after starter Joe Kelly left with an injury in the first inning, shortly after giving up a two-run homer to Freddie Freeman.

Losing pitcher Max Fried (freed) was lifted with two out in the fifth, charged with five runs and eight hits.

Braves slugger Jorge Soler (soh-LEHR') struck out as a pinch-hitter after being cleared for COVID-19.

Dodgers infielder Justin Turner is done for the season following a hamstring injury sustained in Wednesday's loss. 

HOUSTON (AP) — It will be Luis Garcia starting for the Astros against Boston's Nathan Eovaldi (eh-VAHL'-dee) in Game 6 of the AL Championship Series on Friday. 

Astros manager Dusty Baker announced his pitching selection Thursday afternoon as his team holds a three-games-to-two lead in the series. García started Game 2 and gave up a grand slam in the first inning before leaving with no outs in the second because of discomfort in his right knee. 

UNDATED (AP) — The Atlanta Hawks have begun their season in much the same manner they ended the previous regular season.

Cam Reddish scored 20 points and Trae Young added 19 in the Hawks' 113-87 rout of Luka Doncic (LOO'-kah DAHN-chihch) and the Mavericks. Atlanta added to a seven-point, halftime lead by outscoring Dallas, 35-20 in the third quarter. Young scored 12 points and dished out nine assists in the decisive period.

Reddish led a stellar effort from the deep Hawks bench, which contributed 44 points.

Doncic was held to 18 points on 6-of-17 shooting, to go along with 11 rebounds and seven assists.

— Tyler Herro (HEE'-roh) scored 27 points in 24 minutes off the bench as the Heat blew out the Bucks, 137-95. Miami took control for good by outscoring the defending NBA champs, 40-17 in the first quarter. Bam Adebayo (ad-eh-BY'-oh) provided 20 points and 13 rebounds, while Jimmy Butler chipped in 21 points.

— Stephen Curry hit a go-ahead 3-pointer with 56.8 seconds remaining as part of his 45-point performance in the Warriors' 115-113 triumph over the Clippers. Damion Lee hit a go-ahead 3-pointer with 5:55 remaining and scored 11 points off the bench for Golden State. Paul George had 29 points, 11 rebounds and six assists in the Clippers' season opener.
