Upset City: Seaman kicks off Class 5A boys state quarterfinals with win over No. 1 seed Kapaun Mt. Carmel

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Bruce Weber resigned as the basketball coach at Kansas State on Thursday, one day after the Wildcats lost to West Virginia in the opening round of the Big 12 Tournament to cap a third straight losing season.

Weber made headlines following the loss to the Mountaineers at T-Mobile Center on Wednesday night when he lambasted the NCAA over its handling of the FBI investigation into college basketball corruption. Weber said he had refused to cut his hair until schools that were identified in the probe were punished, which some took as a swipe at rival Kansas.

“We won titles. We did it the right way,” said Weber, who led the Wildcats to a share of two Big 12 regular-season titles in 10 seasons in Manhattan. "I'm on the NCAA ethics committee. I was told they were going to take care of the people in the FBI stuff, so I told somebody I'm going to grow my hair until something happens. Obviously, it's still growing.

“That's the sad part about our business,” Weber added. “Lon Kruger told me the other day, all the guys in the FBI (probe) except one are in the NCAA Tournament. All those teams are going to be in the NCAA Tournament.”

Weber was a largely unpopular pick to replace Frank Martin when he was hired by former athletic director John Currie in 2012, shortly after he was fired by Illinois. Weber was mulling several mid-major jobs when Currie selected him to take over a program that had suddenly shot to national prominence on the back of six straight 20-win seasons.

Weber kept the momentum going for a while, too. He led the Wildcats to a share of the Big 12 title in his first season, made five NCAA Tournaments in his first seven seasons and added a share of another conference title just four years ago.

But the past few years have been a struggle, and all the hard-won support Weber had gained over most of the previous decade simply disappeared. He was forced to completely rebuild the roster after the 2019 season, then struggled to recruit at a level to get the Wildcats back to the point where they were competing for championships.

They went 9-20 last season and 14-17 this season, leaving Weber — who took the Illini to the national championship game in 2005 — with a 184–147 record with the Wildcats. His career mark, including a highly successful run at Southern Illinois that included two NCAA tourney appearances, stands at 407-301 with 13 appearances in the NCAA Tournament.

“I'm very, very proud of my time here,” Weber said Wednesday night. "It was a long, long time that we won a championship and I told the guys, the funny part and the sad part, I didn't get much credit for that, and they all said it wasn't my guys, but I would tell you probably the closest group of all of my 40-some years of coaching in that group.

“Then we did it with our guys,” Weber continued. “Whatever happens in the future happens, and that's fine. K-State is a great place, great people.”

His 2018 team made the school’s first trip to the Elite Eight in eight years.

Weber’s 184 wins are the third-most by a head coach in school history, trailing Hall of Famers&nbsp;Jack Hartman&nbsp;and&nbsp;Fred “Tex” Winter. He is the fourth coach (Hartman, Winter and&nbsp;Frank Martin) to take the school to at least five NCAA Tournaments in a tenure. He was named the 2013 Big 12 Coach of the Year after guiding the Wildcats to a 27-8 overall record and their first-ever Big 12 regular-season championship.

Weber was named the school’s 24th&nbsp;head coach on March 31, 2012.

Weber, 65, has a compiled a 497-302 overall record in 24 seasons as a head coach, which includes stints at Southern Illinois (1998-2003) and Illinois (2003-11). His teams have participated in postseason play 15 times, including 13 NCAA Tournaments. He has won 15 NCAA Tournament games, including trips to the Sweet 16 in 2002, 2004, 2005 and 2018 and the Elite Eight in 2005 and 2018, while he played in the NCAA Championship in 2005.

K-State coach Bruce Weber resigns

DODGE CITY, Kan. – Solomon made sure to get the most out of its first&nbsp;state tournament game in more than a century.&nbsp;

The Gorillas notched their first state tourney victory in thrilling fashion, rallying from a 12-point fourth quarter deficit to top Norwich 45-43 on a bucket by Dylan Hynes with six seconds left in Wednesday's Class 1A Division quarterfinal at United Wireless Arena. &nbsp;

With the game tied at 43, the Gorillas worked the clock down before Makaen Hastings drove baseline and dropped it off for Hynes who flipped it in for the game winner. &nbsp;

Norwich called a timeout with four seconds left but was unable to get off a desperation heave. &nbsp;

Hynes scored 10 points for Solomon (17-7) while Hastings and Spencer Coup each had eight. &nbsp;

Solomon outscored Norwich 20-6 in the fourth quarter after trailing 37-25 at the end of the third. &nbsp;

Norwich (22-2) was led by 16 points from Jace Gosch. &nbsp;

Solomon will play Montezuma-South Gray in the semifinals at 6 p.m. Friday. &nbsp;

The defending state champion Eagles jumped out to a 12-2 lead by the end of the first quarter and never looked back. &nbsp;

Olpe (23-1) was paced by Dexton Hoelting's 18 points on 7-of-9 shooting. &nbsp;

The Eagles went 22 of 49 from the floor while Troy went just 4 of 38. &nbsp;

Olpe led 27-6 at halftime and 35-15 at the end of the third quarter.&nbsp;

Jerrit Norris scored a team-high six points for Troy (16-8). &nbsp;

Olpe will meet Macksville in the Friday's 2 p.m. semifinal.&nbsp;

South Gray saw Ness City trim its 10-point lead down to two at the end of the quarter, but the Rebels regained separation from the Eagles again in the fourth. &nbsp;

The Rebels led nearly the entire way, moving to 22-2. &nbsp;

South Gray placed four in double figures – Joseph Dyck (19), Jorge Lupercio (16), Brady Deges (13) and Brent Penner (12). &nbsp;

Taylor Cable scored a game-high 25 points for Ness City while Jose Guzman added 13. &nbsp;

South Gray, state runners-up last year, went 27 of 57 from the field. &nbsp;

The Eagles (18-6) were led by the 25 points of Taylor Cable. Jose Guzman added 13.&nbsp;

South Gray will meet Solomon in Friday's 6 p.m. semifinal. &nbsp;

Macksville trailed by four early in the third quarter but held Osborne without a field goal for the last 6:34 to earn a spot in the semifinals. &nbsp;

The Mustangs ended the game on an 11-3 run. &nbsp;

Macksville (22-2) was led by Rogelio Ibarra's 13 points while Ryan Kuckelman added 10. Grady Wolters scored a game-high 14 points for Osborne and&nbsp;Doak Guttery&nbsp;finished with 10.&nbsp;

Class 1A Division I boys quarterfinals: Late bucket gives Solomon first state tournament win

HUTCHINSON, Kan. – TMP-Marian has a habit of being a giant killer at the Class 3A state tournament, most notably knocking off No. 1 seed Maur Hill in a 22-point rout in the 2019 state quarterfinals. It took awhile for the Monarchs to spring the upset in Wednesday's quarterfinals of 22-1 Galena, but TMP eventually got it done. Dylan Werth's putback in double-overtime just before the buzzer gave the Monarchs a 68-67 victory. With the win, TMP-Marian (20-4) earned a rematch with the team that denied it a shot at playing for the state championship last year. In Friday's 6 p.m. quarterfinal the Monarchs face defending champion Hesston (23-1), which topped them in last year's semifinals 64-55. Galena, last year's runner-up to Hesston, looked like it might be the team getting the rematch it craved when Brett Sarwinski drilled a 3-pointer from the corner with roughly 16 seconds left in the second overtime to give the Bulldogs a 67-66 lead. Instead of calling a timeout, TMP let the final 15 seconds play out. Gavin Unrein flashed open on the baseline and drove in for the winner. His shot was long off the back iron, but Werth was there on the backside and the 6-foot-7 junior snagged the board and put it back at the buzzer for the win. OKLAHOMA CITY – For a brief moment on Tuesday, the Hutchinson Community College men’s golf team led the Broncho Invitational.

The No. 3-ranked Blue Dragons wound up third in the 14-team, 36-hole tournament on Tuesday at Gaillardia Country Club. Hutchinson shot a second-straight team round of 302 to finished at 604, three strokes behind team co-champion Southwestern Christian University and Oklahoma City University.

Sophomore Harry Crockett led the Blue Dragons on Tuesday with an even-par round of 72. The Blue Dragons also counted scores from Ben Partridge (74), Addison Alonzo (77) and Dominic Clemons (78).

Crockett wound up being the low scorer for the Blue Dragons, tying for fifth with a 36-hole total of 146.

Partridge carded a 3-over round of 75 to tie for sixth at 147. Partridge shot a 72 on Monday.

Alonzo tied for third at 155. Clemons tied for 38th at 156.

Freshman Blake Saffel shot an 81 on Tuesday and closed with a 156, which tied for 52nd.

Individual player Finn Nelson rebounded from a rough Monday with a 79 on Tuesday and finished tied for 75th at 172.

Oklahoma State’s Tiger Christensen won the individual title with a 6-under 138.

The Blue Dragons will next be in action at the TankLogix Intercollegiate on March 15-16 in Midland, Texas.

Dragons finish 3rd at Broncho Invite

Led by freshman Mya Williams, the Hutchinson Community College women’s basketball team had several members earn spots and win individual awards on the 2022 Division I All-Jayhawk Conference/All-Region VI teams released on Monday.

Williams was named the KJCCC’s co-Player of the Year, as well as the league’s Freshman of the Year and a first-team all-league/all-region selection.

Head coach John Ontjes was named the league’s 2022 Coach of the year. Sophomore Mele Kailahi was named the co-Newcomer of the year and a third-team all-league/region selection. Sophomore Tor’e Alford was a second-team player and sophomore Kalyn Ervin was named the to the KJCCC’s All-Defensive Team.

MYA WILLIAMS – Player of the Year; Freshman of the Year; 1st-Team Selection

Williams, a 5-foot-8 freshman guard from Waxahachie, Texas, is the first Blue Dragon women’s basketball Player of the Year since Abby Ogle in 2020. She is the first Blue Dragon to earn league Freshman of the Year honors since Jada Mickens in 2018.

Williams is Hutchinson’s seventh league Player of the Year and sixth Freshman of the Year.

Williams was the leading scorer in the Jayhawk Conference this season at 18.8 points per game. Her 622 points this season are a Blue Dragon freshman record and ranks third on the Blue Dragon single-season scoring list.

Williams reached double figures in 31 of 33 games, including 12 games of 20 or more points. Williams had a career-high of 37 points against Colby on February 12. That mark tied for the fifth most in team single-game history. Williams was 12 of 16 shooting overall, going 7 of 8 from 3-point range against the Trojans.

Williams had seven games of four or more 3-pointers – she hit 81 points and shot 38.7 percent from 3-point range. Twice Williams reached seven 3-pointers in a game against Howard and Colby. Her 81 3-pointers this season are currently ninth most in single season history and are fourth most on the Blue Dragon freshman list.

For the season, Williams is shooting 42.4 percent from the floor and 85.2 percent from the free-throw line. Her 139 made free throws lead the KJCCC and rank second on the Blue Dragon freshman list and sixth on the single-season list.

Three times this season, Williams was named the Jayhawk Conference Player of the Week. She earned NJCAA National Player of the Week honors after her 37-point performance against Colby.

Williams shares the Player of the Year honor with Maisa Marcel of Independence.

This is Ontjes’ eighth KJCCC Coach of the Year award.

This season, the 15th-year head coach guided the 2021-22 Blue Dragons to a co-Jayhawk Conference championship with Independence and the Region VI Tournament championship. The Blue Dragons have now won nine conference titles and seven Region VI Titles under Ontjes.

The Blue Dragons are 28-5 this season, the 28 wins tie for the ninth most in team history.

With the regional title, the Blue Dragon coach will guide the Blue Dragons into the NJCAA national tournament for the first time since 2019 and for the ninth time in his tenure with the Blue Dragons.

Along the way this season, Ontjes reached a pair of milestones in his Blue Dragon career. Ontjes reached 400 coaching wins after a 67-43 win over Howard College on November 13. Also this season, Ontjes moved up two spots Craig Brookover and Jim Littell into second place on the all-time Jayhawk Conference and Region VI coaching wins’ list. Ontjes is now 422-87 with the Blue Dragons.

MELE KAILAHI – Co-Newcomer of the Year; 3rd-Team Selection

One of the players forced to play out of position this season, Kailahi had a superb season doing a little bit of everything.

Kailahi, a 5-9 third-year sophomore from East Palo Alto, California, came to Hutchinson after two years at McLennan Community College in Texas.

Kailahi averaged 11.5 points and a team-high 8.5 rebounds per game this season. She shot 48.3 percent overall and was a 3-point threat with 33 3-pointers, shooting 39.3 percent from behind the arc. She shoots 85.2 percent from the free-throw line, which is the 10th-best season free-throw mark in Blue Dragon single-season history.

Kailahi had 13 games scoring in double figures with a career-high 26 points against Cloud County on November 20. Kailahi tied a single-game record for free throws hitting 16 of 17 shots from the foul line.

Kailahi posted eight double-doubles this season. She had six games of 12 or more rebounds, including a career-high 16 rebounds against Seward county on January 8.

Twice this season, Kailahi was named the KJCCC Player of the Week. Kailahi shares the Newcomer of the Year award with Barton’s Jenny Nkem Womsi.

TOR’E ALFORD – 2nd-Team Selection

Alford, a third-year sophomore from Derby, has the rare distinction of being a three-time all-conference player. Last season, Alford was a first-team all-KJCCC selection. She was honorable mention in her true freshman season of 2020.

Now in the top 10 of three different career categories, Alford averaged 13.1 points per game this season while shooting 42.4 percent overall and 37.0 percent from 3-point range. Along with Kailahi and Williams, Alford is also shooting better than 80 percent from the free-throw line at 85.2 percent.

Alford tied a career high with 26 points in a Region VI Tournament semifinal victory over Seward County last Friday. She added a career-high 14 rebounds. Alford had a season-high 10 assists against Barton on January 26.

Alford is sixth in career 3-pointers (159), sixth in career assists (329) and sixth in career scoring (996).

KAYLYN ERVIN – KJCCC All-Defensive Team

From Day 1 this season, Ervin has provided the Blue Dragons a steady defensive presence on the floor.

Ervin, a 5-foot-7 sophomore from Indianapolis, had three big steals in in the Region VI Tournament Championship Game against Barton. More than that, Ervin had an ability to limit the opposing player she was defending in earning a spot on the league’s All-Defensive Team.

This season, Ervin averaged 10.1 points per game and hit 52 3-pointers for the season. She gave up some offensive opportunities to make sure the defensive end of the floor was taken care of. The Blue Dragons were once again among the league leaders in defensive scoring average at 58.2 points per game.

Joining Ervin on the All-Defensive Team are Garden City’s&nbsp;Britney Mapang, Independence’s Delani Harris, Seward County’s Sierra Lynch and Colby’s Akinsola Oluwabukola.

She is the first Blue Dragon to earn league Freshman of the Year honors since Jada Mickens in 2018.Williams is Hutchinson’s seventh league Player of the Year and sixth Freshman of the Year.Williams was the leading scorer in the Jayhawk Conference this season at 18.8 points per game. Her 622 points this season are a Blue Dragon freshman record and ranks third on the Blue Dragon single-season scoring list.Williams reached double figures in 31 of 33 games, including 12 games of 20 or more points. Williams had a career-high of 37 points against Colby on February 12. That mark tied for the fifth most in team single-game history. Ontjes reached 400 coaching wins after a 67-43 win over Howard College on November 13. Also this season, Ontjes moved up two spots Craig Brookover and Jim Littell into second place on the all-time Jayhawk Conference and Region VI coaching wins’ list. Ontjes is now 422-87 with the Blue Dragons.MELE KAILAHI – Co-Newcomer of the Year; 3rd-Team SelectionOne of the players forced to play out of position this season, Kailahi had a superb season doing a little bit of everything.Kailahi, a 5-9 third-year sophomore from East Palo Alto, California, came to Hutchinson after two years at McLennan Community College in Texas.Kailahi averaged 11.5 points and a team-high 8.5 rebounds per game this season. She shot 48.3 percent overall and was a 3-point threat with 33 3-pointers, shooting 39.3 percent from behind the arc. She shoots 85.2 percent from the free-throw line, which is the 10th-best season free-throw mark in Blue Dragon single-season history.Kailahi had 13 games scoring in double figures with a career-high 26 points against Cloud County on November 20. Kailahi tied a single-game record for free throws hitting 16 of 17 shots from the foul line.Kailahi posted eight double-doubles this season. She had six games of 12 or more rebounds, including a career-high 16 rebounds against Seward county on January 8.Twice this season, Kailahi was named the KJCCC Player of the Week. Kailahi shares the Newcomer of the Year award with Barton’s Jenny Nkem Womsi.TOR’E ALFORD – 2nd-Team SelectionAlford, a third-year sophomore from Derby, has the rare distinction of being a three-time all-conference player. Last season, Alford was a first-team all-KJCCC selection. She was honorable mention in her true freshman season of 2020.Now in the top 10 of three different career categories, Alford averaged 13.1 points per game this season while shooting 42.4 percent overall and 37.0 percent from 3-point range. Along with Kailahi and Williams, Alford is also shooting better than 80 percent from the free-throw line at 85.2 percent.Alford tied a career high with 26 points in a Region VI Tournament semifinal victory over Seward County last Friday. She added a career-high 14 rebounds. Alford had a season-high 10 assists against Barton on January 26.Alford is sixth in career 3-pointers (159), sixth in career assists (329) and sixth in career scoring (996).KAYLYN ERVIN – KJCCC All-Defensive TeamFrom Day 1 this season, Ervin has provided the Blue Dragons a steady defensive presence on the floor.Ervin, a 5-foot-7 sophomore from Indianapolis, had three big steals in in the Region VI Tournament Championship Game against Barton. More than that, Ervin had an ability to limit the opposing player she was defending in earning a spot on the league’s All-Defensive Team.This season, Ervin averaged 10.1 points per game and hit 52 3-pointers for the season. She gave up some offensive opportunities to make sure the defensive end of the floor was taken care of. The Blue Dragons were once again among the league leaders in defensive scoring average at 58.2 points per game.Joining Ervin on the All-Defensive Team are Garden City’s&nbsp;Britney Mapang, Independence’s Delani Harris, Seward County’s Sierra Lynch and Colby’s Akinsola Oluwabukola.

Williams leads strong contingent of Blue Dragon on all-league/region postseason teams

Three members of the 2021-22 national tournament-qualifying Hutchinson Community College men’s basketball team were named to the 2022 KJCCC/Region VI Postseason Teams on Tuesday.

Sophomore guard Angelo Stuart was named to the league/region first team. Sophomore Jacquez Yow was named to the third team. Sophomore Kobe Campbell was named an all-league/region honorable mention selection.

Stuart, Yow and Campbell helped the Blue Dragons to a 25-8 season record, a second-place finish in the ultra-tough Jayhawk Conference and a runner-up finish in the Region VI Tournament. The Blue Dragons earned an at-large bid to the NJCAA Tournament and drew the No. 12 seed. Hutchinson will play Connors State, the 19th seed, at 8:30 p.m. on Monday, March 14 at the Sports Arena.

All three all-conference selections joined the Blue Dragons this season as transfers when head coach Tommy DeSalme took over the program last spring.&nbsp;

A transfer from Mineral Area College, Stuart established himself as the Blue Dragons’ leading scorer with games of 24 and 22 points against Fort Scott and No. 12 Odessa College in the first two games of the season.

A 28-point effort in a 21-point comeback against Clarendon moved Stuart into the scoring lead in the Jayhawk Conference, a spot the 6-foot-1, 185-pound guard from East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania never relinquished for the remainder of the season.

Stuart averaged a league-best 21.4 points per game, the 11th-highest scoring average in Hutchinson single-season history.

Stuart set a Blue Dragon single-season record for 3-pointers. After a stellar six 3-point game against Dodge City in the Region VI finals, Stuart has 98 3-pointers for the season. He also helped the 2022 Blue Dragons obliterate the team season record for 3-pointers. The 2022 Blue Dragons have 312 3-pointers this season.

Stuart shot 43.6 percent overall this season and 40.6 percent from 3-point range, the top mark in the KJCCC. Stuart also shot 76.8 percent from 3-point range.

The Blue Dragon guard scored in double figures in 29 of 30 games played this season, including 21 games of 20 or more points and two of 30 or more points. Stuart posted a career-high 34 points twice, both games against KJCCC and Region VI champion Dodge City.

Three different times, Stuart had six 3-pointers in a single game, which ties for fourth on the all-time Blue Dragon charts.

Twice Stuart was named the Jayhawk Conference Player of the Week.

This is the seventh-straight season a Blue Dragon has earned a spot on the all-conference first team.

Yow, a 6-foot-5, 195-pound sophomore from Newport News, Virginia, was Hutchinson’s leading rebounder and fourth-leading scorer this season.

Yow averaged 12.2 points and 6.5 rebounds this season while shooting a team-high 50.5 percent from the field. Yow added 13 3-pointers, shooting 30.6 percent from behind the arc, and 72.1 percent from the free-throw line. Yow added 23 blocked shots and 34 steals this season.

Yow posted six double-doubles this season, none bigger than his 37-point, 11-rebound performance against Garden City in the season finale, a 120-113 overtime win that clinched second place in the KJCCC for Hutchinson. Yow had nine points in overtime and was a perfect 10 of 10 from the free-throw line in that victory.

The 37 points scored by Yow tied for the ninth most in Blue Dragon single-game history.

Yow was twice named the KJCCC Player of the Week/

KOBE CAMPBELL – Honorable Mention

Campbell, a 6-foot-2, 180-pound sophomore from Kansas City, Missouri, continually provided the spark off the bench for the Blue Dragons this season.

Campbell was the Blue Dragons’ second-leading scorer at 14.3 points per game. He shot 47.7 percent from the field, 29.6 percent from 3-point range and 67.5 percent from the free-throw line. Campbell also averaged 5.9 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 1.8 steals per game.

Campbell has a career-high 25 points on February 12 against Colby. He had a 24-point game at Cowley on January 29. Campbell posted three double-doubles this season, pulling down a career-high 13 rebounds against Dodge City on January 11.

Both Yow and Campbell came to Hutchinson from Cowley College.

(AP) — The Chiefs have placed the franchise tag on left tackle Orlando Brown Jr. The move makes it a near-certainty that Brown will play for Kansas City next season while also giving the two sides time to work out a long-term contract. The non-exclusive tag means Brown is free to negotiate with other teams but Kansas City has the option of matching any offer. If the Chiefs let Brown go, they would receive two first-round draft picks in compensation. The Chiefs traded a first-round pick and three other draft picks to the Baltimore Ravens to acquire Brown last offseason. He started every game in his first season in Kansas City.

NEWTON, Iowa (AP) — IndyCar's return to Iowa will be celebrated as a three-day festival with a quartet of musical acts. Tim McGraw, Florida Georgia Line, Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton will perform over two days in July at the track located 30 miles east of Des Moines. Iowa-headquartered grocery chain Hy-Vee is sponsoring the race and has promised a three-day festival weekend. McGraw is scheduled to play 50 minutes before the July 23 race, and Florida Georgia Line is scheduled to play 90 minutes after the race. Stefani is scheduled for the July 24 pre-race, with Shelton set to play after it.

Matthews scores 40th goal as Toronto beats Blue Jackets 5-4

UNDATED (AP) — Auston Matthews became the first player to score 40 goals this season, Peter Mrazek made 31 saves and the Toronto Maple Leafs held off the Columbus Blue Jackets 5-4. Matthews and linemates Mitch Marner and Michael Bunting each had a goal and an assist, and llya Mikheyev (mih-KY'-ehv) and Alexander Kerfoot also scored as Toronto snapped a two-game skid. T.J. Brodie had two assists.

Elvis Merzlikins (murz-LEE'-kihnz), starting his third game in four days for Columbus, made 28 saves but it wasn't enough to prevent a third straight loss for the Blue Jackets, who dropped a back-to-back over the weekend.

— Tyler Toffoli had two goals to lead the Calgary Flames to a 3-1 win over the Edmonton Oilers Monday night. Johnny Gaudreau added a goal and an assist for the Flames (34-14-7), who remained atop the Pacific Division with their 14th win in 16 games. Jacob Markstrom stopped 27 of 28 shots. Devin Shore scored for Edmonton, and Mikko Koskinen had 26 saves.

— Trevor Moore tied the game with 26 seconds left in regulation and Andreas Athanasiou scored on a breakaway in overtime to lead the Los Angeles Kings to a 3-2 victory over the Boston Bruins. Boston never trailed in regulation and took a 2-1 lead into the third period thanks to a goal and an assist from Craig Smith. But with the goalie pulled in the final minute, the Kings won a faceoff in the offensive zone and Moore slid home a rebound to tie it. Cal Petersen stopped 30 shots for the Kings. Blake Lizotte also scored for the Kings. They have won eight of their last 10 games.

— Aleksander Barkov had a goal and two assists, and the Florida Panthers won their third straight game, beating the Buffalo Sabres 6-1. Anthony Duclair added a goal and an assist. Noel Acciari, Carter Verhaeghe, and Patric Hornqvist also scored during a four-goal second period. Brandon Montour also scored, and Spencer Knight made 28 saves. John Hayden tipped in Rasmus Asplund's shot for Buffalo's lone goal. Craig Anderson stopped 25 shots for the Sabres.

— Cale Makar had two goals and an assist, Nathan MacKinnon had a goal and two assists, and the Colorado Avalanche held off the New York Islanders 5-4 to snap a two-game skid. J.T. Compher and Devon Toews also scored for the Avalanche, who led 5-1 midway through the third and ran out the clock on New York's rally. NHL suspends agreement with Russia-based KHL

UNDATED (AP) — The NHL has suspended its dealings with the Russia-based KHL. The NHL told its teams to cease contact with KHL counterparts and Russia-based agents as part of the suspension of the memorandum of understanding between the leagues. The move could make it more difficult for NHL teams to sign players from the KHL. They can continue to communicate with North American agents certified by the NHL Players' Association.

It's the league's latest move to sever ties with Russia after its invasion of Ukraine.

— The NHL has unveiled a new logo for the Stanley Cup playoffs and Final that replaces the one used for the last 13 years. League officials say the process of designing the new logo and word mark began more than two years ago, before the start of the pandemic. The design features a realistic rendering of the Stanley Cup set against a championship banner. The fonts used were derived from a nearly 100-year-old etching on the trophy and the sign outside the Windsor Hotel in Montreal, where the NHL was formed in 1917.

Spurs' Popovich ties Nelson for NBA career wins record

UNDATED (AP) — Gregg Popovich tied Don Nelson's NBA record with his 1,335th career victory as a coach in the San Antonio Spurs' 117-110 win over the Los Angeles Lakers. Popovich, in his 26th season, will try to pass Nelson when San Antonio hosts the Toronto Raptors on Wednesday night.

The Spurs had lost four straight with Popovich on the precipice of matching the record, and they were in danger of extendign that skid with a late collapse against the struggling Lakers, who were without star LeBron James due to a sore left knee.

Dejounte Murray had 26 points and 10 rebounds, and Jakob Poeltl and Josh Richardson each had 18 points

— Julius Randle hit eight 3-pointers and scored 17 of his career-high 46 points in the third quarter as the New York Knicks rallied from a 20-point deficit and beat the Sacramento Kings 131-115. One night after beating the Clippers in a win fueled mostly by New York's younger players, Randle rallied the Knicks with a phenomenal shooting display in the second half. He made 12 of 17 shots after halftime, going seven of 11 from beyond the arc, and finished with 10 rebounds. RJ Barrett had 29 points, eight rebounds and six assists to help the Knicks to their second straight win after seven consecutive losses. Immanuel Quickley added 27 points. Domantas Sabonis had 19 points and 13 rebounds for the Kings before being ejected in the fourth quarter.

— Nikola Jokic had his second triple-double in as many nights with 32 points, 15 rebounds and 13 assists, leading the Denver Nuggets to a 131-124 win over the short-handed Golden State Warriors. Monte Morris and Jeff Green added 18 points apiece for the Nuggets, who have won 11 of 13 and moved to 13 games over .500 for the first time this season. The Warriors were playing with a depleted lineup after coach Steve Kerr announced Saturday that Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson and Andrew Wiggins would miss the game to rest. — Victor Oladipo scored 11 points in in his first game in nearly a year, Tyler Herro scored 21 of his 31 points in the second quarter and the Miami Heat beat the Houston Rockets 123-106. Oladipo was playing his first game since April 8 following a second surgery to repair a right quadriceps tendon. He took a charge on his first defensive possession, hitting the deck without any signs of problems, then took another later in the game and had a dunk near the end of his 15-minute stint. Jimmy Butler scored 21 points for Miami. Kevin Porter Jr. scored 22 points for Houston.

— Joel Embiid had 43 points and 14 rebounds, and the Philadelphia 76ers beat the Chicago Bulls 121-106 in a showdown between two of the Eastern Conference's top teams headed in opposite directions. James Harden added 16 points and 14 assists, and Tyrese Maxey added 17 points for the 76ers, who have won six of seven and stayed perfect with Harden in the lineup. CLEVELAND (AP) — Cavaliers All-Star center Jarrett Allen will be sidelined indefinitely after breaking his left middle finger in Sunday's win over the Toronto Raptors.

Allen got hurt in the first quarter, when he also sustained a bruised quadriceps while driving to the basket.

The team did not provide a timetable for Allen's return.
