LAS VEGAS (AP) — Patrick Mahomes threw five touchdown passes and returned to his usual form after a surprisingly shaky stretch this season, and the Kansas City Chiefs moved into first place in the AFC West with a 41-14 victory over the Las Vegas Raiders. Mahomes and the Chiefs showed little resemblance to the team that overpowered the AFC the past three seasons over the first nine weeks. INDEPENDENCE, Kan. — No. 12 Hutchinson's first two plays from scrimmage went for long touchdowns as the Blue Dragons (7-2) quickly went up 21-0 on the No. 5 Pirates (8-2) with 3:51 still left in the first quarter.

Quarterback Dylan Laible hit Malik Benson twice for long scores. The first short reception was taken 87 yards to the house by Benson. The second was a deep shot that went for 76.

"When you start a game off like that, that's awesome," coach Drew Dallas said.

Going back to last week's game against Highland, Benson caught four passes for four touchdowns and 305 yards.

Benson finished the day with five receptions for 197 yards and three scores. Benson scored again late in the third quarter from 12 yards away.

Demariyon Houston caught the third touchdown pass of the day on a 52-yard score. It was another short route that Houston broke for a touchdown off a Cortez Braham block.

Braham caught five passes for 79 yards and a touchdown.

"He can't do it alone," Dallas said of Laible's big day. "He's making great decisions. I'm happy for him. He's continued to grow and develop as the season goes along."

The defense kept the Independence ground game in check from the very start. The Pirates finished the day with seven rushing yards.

Deontay Wilson caught that pass, but dealt with injury for much of Sunday's contest. He finished with two catches for 54 yards. He also had a 71-yard kickoff return.

Tyriq Starks, the backup quarterback who earned a starting role after defeating the Dragons earlier this season, was forced out of the game with an injury. He would return in the second half and finish with 229 yards passing, but three interceptions.

The Dragon defense did not give up any points and forced four turnovers. R.J. Evans had an interception and a fumble recovery. His interception came compliments of Davion Westmoreland's hit on Starks.

"Guys (were) flying around and making tackles all over the place," Dallas said of the defense. "They flew around and created havoc all day."

Evans finished with six tackles while Westmoreland had two sacks. The Dragon defense sacked the quarterback six times.

Jordan Huff and Daquan Wilson also came away with interceptions.

Hutchinson took a 28-0 lead into halftime after Braham caught a back-shoulder throw from Laible with 45 seconds left in the first half.

Hutchinson took time off the clock in the third quarter with an 11-play, 71-yard drive that took 5:18. It finished with a Tye Edwards one-yard run, his first TD of the season.

Anwar Lewis failed to reach the end zone after scoring in seven-straight games. Lewis led the rushing attack with 53 yards.

The Dragons rushed the ball 38 times for only 26 yards.

Meanwhile, the Dragons racked up 365 yards in the air.

Hutchinson will be at Riverfront Stadium in Wichita next Sunday to play Garden City for the conference crown.

"I know one thing, we're not checking pads in, we're continuing to play," Dallas said when asked about a new week of game prep.

FB: Dragons shut out Pirates; Laible throws 5 TDs

RICHMOND, Virginia – The Hutchinson Community College women’s cross country team posted their second-straight national Top 15 finish on Saturday with a 12th-place performance at the 2021 NJCAA Division I Championships at Pole Green Park.

After a seventh-place performance in 2020, the Blue Dragons finished 12th on Saturday scoring 328 team points. The Dragons were the fourth-highest finishing team from Region VI.

College of Southern Idaho won the team national championship with 60 points. Cloud County was the national runner-up with 128 points and El Paso was third with 139 points. El Paso’s Faith Nyseha was the individual national champion in 17:08.08.

All-American Louise Cocking was the top Blue Dragon on Saturday. She finished 21st overall – she was the seventh Region VI runner to finish – posting a time of 19:13.9. Last season, Cocking earned first-team NJCAA All-America honors with a fifth-place finish. Cocking was the Region VI and Jayhawk West champion this season.

The Blue Dragons had one other Top 50 finisher. Sophomore Noelle Higaldo was 50th was a personal-best time of 20:12.5.

Freshman Anastasia Meyer and sophomores Izzy Wheeler and Jurney Yung were the other Blue Dragons to figure into the team score.

Meyer was 86th with a time of 21:22.0. Wheeler placed 90th in a time of 21:29.4. Jung was 95th in a PR time of 21:47.6.

Jung’s top two career times have come at the NJCAA Championships.

Freshman Michele Gage placed 104th in a time of 21:58.1. Freshman Sydney Grauer was 139th in a time of 24:12.8.

Dragon women finish 12th at nationals

RICHMOND, Virginia – Freshman Collin Oswalt was a Top 50 placer and Camelo Tarin ran a PR on Saturday to lead the Hutchinson Community College men’s cross country team at the NJCAA Division I Men’s National Championship at Pole Green Park.

The Blue Dragons had only four runners competing and didn’t produce a team score.

For the sixth race this season, Oswalt was the top Blue Dragon runner. He placed 35th in a time of 26:03.9 on the championship 8,000-meter course.

Tarin posted his best time of his freshman season in 26:45.1. Tarin finished 56th overall. Tarin broke 27 minutes for the first time this season.

Sophomore Andrew Holt placed 87th in a time of 27:24.61. Last season, Holt placed 37th at nationals.

Sophomore Aaron Geissinger placed 123rd in a time of 28:18.7

Northwest Tech’s Vincent Nchogu was the 2021 individual national champion, the first Region VI runner to win a national crown since Hutchinson’s Andrew Kibet in 2018. Nchogu ran a time of 24:04.8

Iowa Central won the men’s team championship with 63 points. Iowa Western was second with 127 points and Colby was third with 140 points.

INDEPENDENCE, Kan.—The Hutchinson Community College football team gets its rematch Sunday with the Independence Pirates in the Jayhawk Conference/Region VI Playoff Semifinals at 1 p.m. at Shulties Stadium in Independence.

The Blue Dragons hope to gain a bit of revenge after a 32-28 loss to the Pirates on October 9 in Hutchinson when Deontay Wilson took a short pass over the middle from back-up quarterback Tyriq Starks with five Blue Dragons surrounding him and somehow working his way down the sideline for a go-ahead touchdown with 6 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter.

At stake is a berth in the playoff championship game on November 21 in Wichita's Riverfront Stadium to take on the Garden City/Butler winner in the other semifinal.

For the No. 12-ranked Blue Dragons (6-2), a victory will provide an opportunity to move up the NJCAA National Rankings and try to somehow get into the Top 4 of the NJCAA Rankings for an opportunity to defend their national championship.

For KJCCC co-champion Independence (8-1), a spot in the NJCAA Top 4 is squarely on the line. The No. 5 Pirates are on the outside looking in at the Top 4 now occupied by No. 1 Iowa Western, No. 2 Snow, No. 3 New Mexico Military and No. 4 Northwest Mississippi.

The Blue Dragons advanced to their 12th all-time league/region playoff semifinal after a 77-0 domination of Highland last Sunday in Gowans Stadium. Quarterback&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/fball/2021-22/bios/laible_dylan_vw09">Dylan Laible</a>&nbsp;threw for a school-record seven touchdown passes and a career-high 365 yards. Three Blue Dragon quarterbacks threw for school-records of 485 passing yards and nine touchdown passes.

Defensively, the Dragons shut out Highland, holding the Scotties to just 70 yards total offense. Hutchinson racked up 659 total yards, the fourth-highest single-game total in Blue Dragon history.

Independence had little resistance from Fort Scott in a 63-2 opening-round victory. The Pirates out-gained the Greyhounds 674-129 as Starks threw for three touchdown passes and 270 yards. Running back Tytraton Lewis had 111 yards on just four carried with an 80-yard touchdown.

The Blue Dragons bid for their ninth appearance in the league/region championship game. The Blue Dragons are 8-12 in the semifinal round.

The Dragons are 3-0 in the playoffs against Independence.

🏈 NO. 12 Brue Dragons to clash with No. 5 Indy Pirates in KJCCC Playoff Semi-finals 

AUSTIN, Texas –&nbsp;The Kansas Jayhawks scored the most points in a road game in program history Saturday night and topped Texas 57-56 in overtime in front of 95,202 fans at Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium.

The Jayhawks won in thrilling fashion to earn their second win of the season. Trailing 56-49 in overtime, Kansas scored on its first possession of the extra session when freshman running back Devin Neal scored on a 2-yard rush. Trailing by one, coach Lance Leipold decided to go for the win and go for two points.

After a timeout to talk strategy, quarterback Jalon Daniels found tight end Jared Casey to convert and give Kansas the dramatic one-point win.

The win marks the first time ever Kansas won in Austin and marks the most points the Jayhawks have scored in a game since scoring 76 against Nebraska in 2007.

“I’m so proud of our guys,” Leipold said. “They have been through so much. They battled, they kept believing in what we’re doing. We let the lead slip away, but we talked about trying to finish and playing hard for 60 minutes. We did it and then some. I’m so proud of them and hopefully it’s something we’re going to build on.”

Neal rushed for 143 yards and three touchdowns in the win on 24 carries. He also had a 19-yard touchdown catch and had two receptions for 26 yards. Daniels, making his first start of the season, threw for 202 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions in the win.

The Jayhawks played inspired football from the start against the Longhorns. On the team’s first drive, Kansas went 75 yards on 13 plays and capped it with a 3-yard touchdown from Neal to finish off a drive that took seven minutes and two seconds.

The defense then showed it was ready to play as well when super-senior defensive end Kyron Johnson forced a fumble, which was recovered by Rich Miller to thwart the drive by the Longhorns. After Kansas recovered the fumble, the Jayhawks made it 14-0 when Daniels found tight end Mason Fairchild for an 11-yard touchdown, which marked the first of Fairchild’s career.

The Longhorns responded with a pair of touchdown passes – one from Casey Thompson and one from Hudson Card – to get back in the game and knot it up at 14 apiece.

But the Jayhawks then scored the final 21 points of the half in a 2:25 span to take a 35-14 lead into the locker room at halftime.

The first touchdown in the final flurry of the half came when Daniels scored on a 9-yard rush with 2:25 left to make it 21-14. On Texas’s third play of the ensuing drive, Johnson came up with his second sack-fumble to give the ball back to Kansas.

Three plays later, Daniels found Neal for a 19-yard touchdown pass for Neal’s first receiving touchdown of his career.

Then on the next drive for Texas, Card was intercepted by Jacobee Bryant on the first play and Bryant returned it 31 yards for a touchdown to make it 35-14.

Texas scored on the opening drive of the second to cut it to 35-21, but Kansas responded with a 10-yard touchdown run from Neal to go up 42-21. The Longhorns scored back-to-back touchdowns to get it to 42-35 with 1:21 left in the third quarter.

The Jayhawks made it a 14-point lead again when Kwamie Lassiter II caught a 2-yard touchdown pass from Daniels at the 8:47 mark of the fourth. Texas cut it to within seven with 4:39 left. The Jayhawks couldn’t score on their next possession, but true freshman safety O.J. Burroughs came up with an interception to keep it a seven-point win.

But after Kansas failed to convert a first down, Texas got the ball back and scored with 22 seconds left to tie the game at 49.

Texas (4-6, 2-5 Big 12) then scored on its opening possession of overtime to go up seven and set up the dramatic comeback for the Jayhawks.

Lassiter II finished with eight catches for 68 yards and a touchdown. Junior tight end Mason Fairchild caught the first touchdown pass of his career in the win as well and had two catches for 31 yards.

Defensively, Kenny Logan Jr., led the team with 11 tackles—all solo. Johnson had two sacks, two forced fumbles and eight tackles in the win. Rich Miller, Gavin Potter and Zion DeBose all had a tackle-for-loss as well.

The Jayhawks, who are now 2-8 overall and 1-6 in the Big 12, will return to action at TCU on Saturday at 3 p.m.

🏈 Kansas Tops Texas in Overtime Thriller

MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;–&nbsp;Skylar Thompson fired a 35-yard completion down the seam to tight end Sammy on fourth down that led to a crucial score, and the Wildcats took the air out of a West Virginia comeback by holding on for a 34-17 victory Saturday at Bill Snyder Family Stadium, snapping a five-game skid to the Mountaineers.

“Monkey off the back for sure,” said Thompson, who completed 14 of 19 passes for 138 yards and 1 touchdown. “It was something fresh on my mind and the senior class’s mind. We had a bad taste in our mouth about West Virginia. We’d never been able to get over the hump. This is bigtime for us.”

K-State’s first win over West Virginia since 2015 came after the Mountaineers topped the Wildcats 37-10 last season in Morgantown, West Virginia, which was the second-most lopsided win by the Mountaineers in the series.

That defeat stayed with K-State sixth-year senior center Noah Johnson, who called the victory a part of the team’s “revenge tour.”

“We definitely wanted this one bad,” Johnson said. “They’re a great challenge for us. The revenge tour, man, it’s always great to put on shows in front of your home crowd, and the crowd was awesome today. It’s a blast to play in front of them. The tour keeps going. We’ll enjoy it today and get back on the road tomorrow.”

K-State, 7-3 overall and 4-3 in the Big 12, next meets No. 13 Baylor, 8-2 and 6-2, which beat No. 8 Oklahoma 27-14 on Saturday. It will be Senior Day in Manhattan.

“We continue to challenge the guys to raise the temperature of the expectations around here,” K-State head coach Chris Klieman said, “and I couldn’t be happier with us beating a really good West Virginia team.”

K-State built a 24-3 lead early in the third quarter before West Virginia, 4-6 and 2-5, roared back with a pair of touchdowns. A 3-yard touchdown pass from Jarret Doege to Winston Wright on fourth down seemingly took away all the Wildcats’ momentum. Trailing just 24-17, it appeared West Virginia threatened to snap the Wildcats’ three-game winning streak against Big 12 Conference opponents.

Klieman, the first coach in K-State history to lead his team to at least seven wins twice in his first three seasons, had other ideas.

“We didn’t come here to try and hang onto win,” Klieman. “We came here to try and win the football game.”

Thompson drove K-State 24 yards on 6 plays, but it appeared the Wildcats, who faced fourth-and-8, would stall at the West Virginia 45. An unsuccessful fourth-down play would give West Virginia ideal field position.

But Klieman had confidence in his sixth year starting quarterback.

Klieman said that he looked at Thompson and said, “What do you like?”

“We knew on fourth down that if we got a first down there,” Thompson said, “it’d pretty much seal the game.”

K-State entered the game third in the FBS in converting 84.62% of its fourth-down opportunities this season. With K-State facing fourth-and-8 at the West Virginia 39-yard line, Thompson waited for Wheeler to get past free safety Alonzo Addae for the long completion to the 4-yard line.

“He absolutely ripped the seam route to Sammy Wheeler,” Klieman said. “It was the turning point of the game without a question. I’m glad the guys believe in each other, and they believed in me that they were going to get that call in and roll with it.”

Running back Deuce Vaughn ran it in on the next play for a 31-17 lead with 7:22 left in the fourth quarter.

“Gutsy call and I’m just glad (Klieman) trusted us to make plays and gave us the opportunity,” Wheeler said of his catch. “They checked to cover-3, so it was perfect for that play. We got a good look there, I just turned around and the ball was in the air, and I blacked out from there.”

K-State defensive end Felix Anudike-Uzomah forced West Virginia’s star running back Leddie Brown to fumble on the following series and Chris Tennant booted a 25-yard field goal. Anudike-Uzomah leads the FBS with six forced fumbles this season and tied the K-State single-season record shared with former All-American Darren Howard (1999).

Thompson earned his 23rd victory as a starting quarterback, the most by a K-State passer since at least 1990.

“It means a lot,” Thompson said. “There’s a lot that goes into that and a lot of guys that’ve helped me win football games, a lot of great coaches and great players. Every game I approach to have fun and win.”

Vaughn recorded his sixth 100-yard rushing performance of the season in gaining 121 yards on 25 carries and one score. Wide receiver Phillip Brooks had 5 catches for 62 yards and Wheeler had 3 catches for 45 yards and 1 score — a 3-yard reception on the opening drive of the third quarter that gave the Wildcats their commanding 24-3 lead.

“Huge play,” Klieman said. “Third-and-goal from the 4 and we give a little bit of a play action, and he beats the guy inside and Skylar throws a bullet that needs to be low, and Sammy has great hands and made the play. I love Sammy’s confidence.”

West Virginia outgained K-State 345-299 and scored a field goal and two touchdowns on three straight possessions between the second and third quarters, causing the crowd at Bill Snyder Family Stadium to grow uneasy. The lead dropped to just seven points at 24-17 with 12 minutes left in the fourth quarter.

“We really wanted to pitch a shutout in the second half and keep them to three points,” K-State cornerback Russ Yeast said. “There’s still work to do, but we’re definitely happy with the direction the defense is trending. We’re playing better football this point in the season.”

The K-State defense and special teams keyed the Wildcats’ attack early as Yeast intercepted a tipped pass that led to one touchdown, and Ty Bowman blocked a punt that Marvin Martin picked up and ran 7 yards into the end zone for another in taking a 14-0 advantage. It was the first time K-State returned a blocked punt for a score since 2015. K-State has 125 non-offensive touchdowns since 1999, which leads the FBS.

Jarret Doege went 27 of 45 for 268 yards and 2 touchdowns and 2 interceptions. Running back Leddie Brown had 20 carries for 85 yards for the Mountaineers, who have lost five of their last seven games.

Doege entered the game averaging a league-leading 242.2 passing yards but also had a league-high eight interceptions — tied for the 14th most among FBS quarterbacks.&nbsp;

“It was a big deal to set that tone,” Yeast said. “It gives the whole team confidence when we can get a stop early and make plays early.”

GREAT BEND, Kan. — With 7:40 remaining Saturday, No. 15 Hutchinson (6-0) trailed Clarendon (3-2) by 20 points.

After leading by four at the break, Hutchinson fell behind 86-66 with less than eight minutes left.

Hutchinson used a 31-8 run to take the lead with 12.1 seconds left.

The Bulldogs were led by Zarique Nutter, who had a double-double by halftime. With Hutchinson up three, Nutter was purposely fouled with 12 seconds left.

In the double bonus, Nutter cut the lead to 97-95 with one toss remaining.

He intentionally missed the second free throw and Hutchinson could not secure the rebound. The Bulldogs nearly lost the ball out of bounds when the ball caromed off a player's foot.

Clarendon corralled the ball in the deep left corner with just three seconds left.

Nutter inbounded and quickly got the ball back. His three-point attempt at the buzzer rimmed off.

No. 20 Hutchinson (6-0) came out firing from distance. The Dragons hit 4 of 10 three-pointers to begin the contest.

The hot streak was short-lived as the Dragons finished the game 7 of 31 from beyond the arc.

Hutchinson took a 32-19 lead into halftime.

Howard's leading scorer, Charnay Robinson, was held in check after scoring eight of her team's first 10 points.

Robinson finished 5 of 14 with 13 points and six rebounds.

Mya Williams turned in another strong first-half performance and added a strong third quarter before leaving a game that was already in-hand. Williams finished with 19 and hit three triples.

Kalyn Ervin was the only other Dragon in double digits with 17.

Mel Kailahi struggled at 1 of 8 from the floor, but led the way with 10 rebounds.

Tor'e Alford and Janaya Washington each added nine points.

DeSalme (1st season) now has six wins at Hutchinson while all 400 of Ontjes' wins (15th season) have come on the Dragon bench.

GREAT BEND, Kan. — No. 15 Hutchinson (5-0) faced off with McCook for the first time in 13 years Friday afternoon.

The Dragons jumped out to a 10-point lead with eight minutes left in the first half.

McCook tied the game at 24 just five minutes later.

Hutchinson took a 32-27 lead into the break after shooting just 29%.

The 32 points marked a season low for the Dragons, who average 103.7 points per game.

The Dragons extended the lead to 47-38 with 13:43 left.

A quick 6-0 run put Hutchinson up double digits.

Hutchinson used 23 points off turnovers to go up 68-47 with less than eight minutes remaining.

Hutchinson outscored McCook 56-34 in the second half.

GREAT BEND, Kan. — For the first time this season, No. 20 Hutchinson went into the locker room trailing.

Day 1 of the Barton Classic pit the Blue Dragons against the No. 5 Labette Cardinals of Division II.

Hutchinson (5-0) struggled from the field early. The Dragons were 4 of 27 shooting just 15 minutes into the contest.

Labette (0-1) took a 25-19 advantage into the locker room.

The Dragons went on a 7-0 run to cut the lead to four halfway through the third quarter.

Labette still pushed the lead to 43-36 at the end of three.

Hutchinson sped up the contest and rallied to a 48-46 advantage with 5:41 remaining.

With 1:08 remaining, Janaya Washington drew a foul on a defensive rebound and went to the other end for bonus free throws. She made one of the two attempts to put Hutchinson up 54-53.

A defensive stand gave Hutchinson the ball with 34 seconds left.

Full-court pressure got the ball back for Labette and a layup put the Cardinals up one.

He began his career with the New York Yankees in the 1950s before becoming the longest-tenured member of the Royals organization. Stewart scouted more than 70 players who reached the big leagues including Bo Jackson, Kevin Appier, Mike Sweeney, Johnny Damon and Carlos Beltran. He was instrumental in helping sign the talent that led the Royals to the 1985 World Series title and Stewart was still part of the front office when they won their second title 30 years later. The Royals say Stewart died Thursday.&nbsp;

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska linebacker JoJo Domann says his career with the Cornhuskers is over after surgery on his left hand. The sixth-year senior made the announcement on his podcast. He said he injured a finger early in the Oct. 30 game against Purdue. He played one of his best games of the season last week against Ohio State. He made nine tackles, intercepted a pass and broke up two others. Domann played in 51 games and finished his career with 209 tackles. His 133 solo tackles rank 11th on the school's all-time chart.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Monika Czinano scored 20 points, Caitlin Clark added 19 and No. 9 Iowa beat Samford 91-54 on Thursday night.
