IRVING, Texas&nbsp;– One of the most decorated players in Kansas men’s basketball history, Ochai Agbaji can add 2021-22 Big 12 Male Athlete of the Year to his list of honors as the conference announced its athletes of the year awards Monday. Oklahoma softball player Jocelyn Alo is the league’s 2021-22 female athlete of the year.

Nominees are submitted by Big 12 institutions and selected based on athletic performance during the 2021-22 school year by a media panel. Nominees must be in good academic standing.

"What a great honor to be named this among all the athletes in the Big 12. It is humbling to be listed among Heisman Trophy winners, other national champions and great athletes. This would not be possible without my teammates, coaches and the KU support staff. We had a great run to the national title and it took a lot of people to get there, not just me."

Since the league started in 1996-97, Agbaji is the fourth Jayhawk to be named Big 12 Male Athlete of the Year, with all four being men’s basketball players – Jacque Vaughn in 1997, Nick Collison in 2003 and Frank Mason III, who was a co-recipient in 2017. Historically, Kansas’ Danny Manning (1988) and Rex Walters (1993) were Big Eight Conference Male Athletes of the Year, making Agbaji the sixth KU men’s basketball player to earn the honor. Overall, Agbaji is the ninth Kansas conference athlete of the year honoree joining the aforementioned and Nolan Cromwell, football (1977), Lynette Woodard, women’s basketball (1981) and Tammy Thomas, women’s swimming (1983).

Last month, Agbaji was selected No. 14 by the Cleveland Cavaliers in the 2022 NBA Draft, becoming the KU’s 18th lottery selection and the 12th in the Bill Self era. The Final Four and Big 12 Tournament Most Outstanding Player, Agbaji was a 2022 Consensus All-America First Team honoree, collecting All-America first-team nods from the NABC, Associated Press, The Sporting News and USBWA. The Kansas City, Missouri, native is Kansas’ 31st all-time Consensus All-America First Team selection, which is more than any other school. Agbaji was named the unanimous 2022 Big 12 Player of the Year after leading the conference in scoring with an average of 18.8 points per game.

A four-year starter for KU, Agbaji has etched his name into the Kansas records book. He set the record for consecutive games of three-point field goals made at 53. Agbaji concluded his KU career ranked 15th on the KU career scoring list with 1,652 points, fourth on the three-point field goals made (250), fourth on three-point field goals attempted (670) and ninth in minutes played (3,978).

HUTCHINSON, Kan.-The 88th annual NBC Baseball World Series opens this week at Hobart Detter Field in Hutchinson's Carey Park. &nbsp;Pool play begins Thursday at noon with four games scheduled each day and running from July 28th to July 31st. &nbsp;Then the tournament will move to Wichita to be comped at Eck Stadium on the campus of Wichita State University.

The Hutchinson Monarch's will play on Thursday at 6pm vs Wichita's 316 Elite. &nbsp;Win or lose, their next game would be on Saturday with game time to be decided. The top 2 teams out of pool play will advance based off win-loss records.

NBC World Series to open Thursday in Hutchinson

Tulsa, OK- The Wind Surge fell short in the series finale against the Tulsa Drillers 3-0 on Sunday afternoon behind home runs from Carson Taylor and Jonny DeLuca as the Drillers clinched the Propeller series for the first time.

Carson Taylor got things started for Tulsa as he broke the tie in the bottom of the second inning with a home run to give the Drillers a 1-0 lead. Taylor finished three for three with an RBI in the afternoon.

Tulsa scored two more runs in the bottom of the fifth courtesy of a home run from Jonny DeLuca to extend the Drillers lead to 3-0.

Kyle Hurt got the start on the mound for Tulsa and pitched four scoreless innings and allowed four hits and recorded seven strikeouts before being revived in the fifth inning. The Drillers bullpen pitched five scoreless innings as Keegan Curtis earned his second win on the year. 

The Wind Surge will resume action on Tuesday; June 26th for a six-game series against the Northwest Arkansas Naturals at Riverfront Stadium. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m.

Dozier snapped a 2-all tie with two outs in the seventh when he singled off Brooks Raley (1-1) to score Whit Merrifield. Melendez added an insurance run with a double down the left-field line in the eighth.

The Royals overcame the loss of Bobby Witt Jr. for their first series win against the Rays since 2017. They broke an 11-series losing streak to the American League East.

Bubic (2-6) tied with a season high by pitching seven innings. He gave up two runs on four hits, walked three and struck out four.

For the second straight game, the Royals lost a lead but found some timely hits late to prevail.

Witt hit an RBI single in the first inning, but exited the game before the next half-inning even started. The 22-year-old rookie stole second but then gingerly ran to third on a fly ball to center field and was removed with right hamstring tightness. He is considered day to day.

The club on Saturday announced its deal with Cross, whose bonus is worth $5,202,900, the full slot value for the No. 9 pick, according to MLB Pipeline's Jim Callis. Cross, a left-handed power hitter, became the highest pick in Virginia Tech history and can play all three spots in the outfield.

Some of the Royals’ Draft picks, including Louisville outfielder Levi Usher (10th round), Maryland lefty Ryan Ramsey (13th round) and Walden Grove (Ariz.) High School outfielder Milo Rushford (18th round), have said they plan on signing with the club, but they still need to complete physicals and paperwork before it becomes official. Several are heading to the Royals’ Spring Training facility in Arizona this weekend to do so.

Wichita started the game with back-to-back home runs in the first inning. Jair Camargo and Chris Williams drilled solo home runs to give the Surge the early advantage.

Tulsa answered with pair of runs in the first to tie the game. Wichita scored a pair in the second on consecutive doubles from Leobaldo Cabrera and Edouard Julien to plate two.

Tulsa’s Ryan January homered in the fourth inning to cut the deficit to one run. The Drillers sent eight hitters to the plate in the fifth inning and scored five runs to take the lead.

The Drillers matched their season high with 18 hits and hit six home runs on the night including a pair from Ryan Ward.

Alec Gamboa pitched three scoreless innings of relief to earn the win. Brent Headrick made his debut for the Surge and suffered the loss allowing seven runs.

The Surge are tied with Springfield for first place in the division in the second half.

Drillers win over Wichita Saturday

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Brady Singer struck out a career-high 12, Michael A. Taylor and Bobby Witt Jr. homered off Ryan Yarbrough in a three-run eighth inning and the Kansas City Royals beat the Tampa Bay Rays 6-3 on Saturday night.

Singer, a 25-year-old right-hander in his third major league season, allowed two runs — one earned — three hits and two walks in six innings.

Singer sat down seven with the slider but also found a rhythm with a wide array of his arsenal as the game wore on.

With the score 3-3, Taylor hit his sixth home run this season and first since June 25. Witt hit a two-run drive off Yarbrough (0-5), who has given up seven home runs this season.

Witt had three RBI for the Royals, who stopped a four-game losing streak. Whit Merrifield hit a two-run double in a three-run third.

Scott Barlow (4-2) allowed three hits in two scoreless innings.

Tampa Bay's Luis Patiño gave up three runs and seven hits in four innings. The Rays lost for the second time in eight games.

Monarchs alive in SCL Tournament with win over Kingman

TULSA, OK- The Wind Surge defeated the Tulsa Drillers 7-3 on Friday night as Wichita scored seven runs on fifteen hits to win their seventh straight game.

Christian Encarnacion-Strand led the way for the Surge as he finished three for five with an RBI on the night. Nash Knight followed with an impressive outing as he went three for four at the plate.

The Surge broke the game open in the top of the third inning as they scored four runs behind three RBI singles from DaShawn Keirsey, Jr., Anthony Prato, and Leobaldo Cabrera.

Andrew Bechtold followed as he grounded out into a fielder’s choice that allowed another run to score and extended the Wichita lead to 5-0 in the third inning.

Casey Legumina made his second start on the mound after coming back from injury and pitched two and two thirds’ innings and allowed no runs on three hits and tallied three strikeouts before being relieved in the third inning.

The Wichita bullpen pitched a combined six and one thirds innings and allowed three runs on four hits. Sawyer Gibson-Long pitched three and a third innings and earned the win to improve to 2-4 on the year.

Saturday's game in Tulsa will have a 7:05 p.m. first pitch.

TULSA, OK- The Wind Surge defeated the Tulsa Drillers 7-3 on Friday night as Wichita scored seven runs on fifteen hits to win their seventh straight game.Christian Encarnacion-Strand led the way for the Surge as he finished three for five with an RBI on the night. Nash Knight followed with an impressive outing as he went three for four at the plate.The Surge broke the game open in the top of the third inning as they scored four runs behind three RBI singles from DaShawn Keirsey, Jr., Anthony Prato, and Leobaldo Cabrera.Andrew Bechtold followed as he grounded out into a fielder’s choice that allowed another run to score and extended the Wichita lead to 5-0 in the third inning.Casey Legumina made his second start on the mound after coming back from injury and pitched two and two thirds’ innings and allowed no runs on three hits and tallied three strikeouts before being relieved in the third inning.The Wichita bullpen pitched a combined six and one thirds innings and allowed three runs on four hits. Surge win seventh straight

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Yandy Diaz hit a three-run double, Drew Rasmussen allowed one run over five innings and the Tampa Bay Rays returned from the All-Star break with a 7-3 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Friday night at Kauffman Stadium.

Diaz capped a four-run fourth inning with his bases-loaded bloop down the left-field line to give the Rays a 5-1 lead. He has driven in a run in five of the last eight games and tied a season high with his three RBI.

Rasmussen (6-3) allowed an earned run and seven hits, walked one and struck out four.

Francisco Mejia went 2 for 4 with two RBI, while Randy Arozarena and Brandon Lowe each had one.

Royals All-Star Andrew Benintendi had two hits and two RBI. Hunter Dozier added an RBI, scoring Bobby Witt Jr. in the seventh.

In his first start in 11 days, Brad Keller (5-10) had one of his worst outings to date, tying a career worst with five walks and hitting a batter. He allowed four earned runs in four innings and struck out one.

Tampa Bay has won seven of its last eight games and leads the American League wild-card standings. It’s the first time the Rays have won a road series opener since May 6, breaking a nine-series streak.

A Hutchinson Community College softball player is part of the Sunflower Softball League All-Stars going to Oklahoma City for the Alliance Softball Collegiate Summer Series next week.

Lexie Pitcher joins 17 other athletes from the league for the three-game set.

This will be the third and final stop for Team Alliance as part of the inaugural Collegiate Summer Series. The Team Alliance roster is stacked with National Champions, All Americans, All Conference Players and National Player of the Year Finalists. Their roster for the OKC Series is highlighted by Alyssa Brito, Grace Lyons, Grace Green &amp; Riley Boone from the reigning National Champion Oklahoma Sooners, Kelly Maxwell, a top 10 finalist for Player of the Year &amp; Big 12 Co-Pitcher of the Year, out of Oklahoma State, Sydney McKinney, a top 10 finalist for Player of the Year out of Wichita State and Chenise Delce, the SEC Pitcher of the Year and OKC native, out of Arkansas.

Former Hutchinson Community College all-conference player Dylan Nedved, on Monday, became the 40th Blue Dragon to be drafted in the Major League Baseball Entry Draft.

Nedved was drafted in the ninth round with the 270th overall selection as a pitcher by the San Diego Padres on Day 2 of the three-day draft.

Nedved played at Hutchinson in 2018 and 2019, coming to the Blue Dragons from Shawnee Mission Northwest High School in Shawnee, Kansas. After graduating from Hutchinson in 2019, he played three seasons at the University of Iowa, completing his eligibility in 2022.

As a Blue Dragon, Nedved hit .343 with 15 home runs and 21 RBIs. He was a two-time All-KJCCC player and was selected as an all-Region VI player in 2019. The Blue Dragons won 83 games in Nedved’s two seasons, including one Jayhawk West title and a third-place and runner-up Region VI finish.

As a pitcher, Nedved appeared 33 times with 15 total starts. The right-handed pitcher compiled a 10-3 career record with five saves and a 3.92 earned-run average.
