WICHITA — The AfterShocks are two wins away from a million dollars in The Basketball Tournament after winning Wednesday over the Gutter Cat Gang 74-67 at Koch Arena in Wichita. 

Markis McDuffie and Darral Willis Jr. led the AfterShocks with 17 and 15 points respectively. Kelly chipped in 11, followed by Conner Frankamp with 10, Woodard with nine. James Dickey with six, Clevin Hannah with four and Samaje Haynes-Jones with two to round out the AfterShocks scoring. 

They play next in Dayton, Ohio on Saturday.

NEW YORK (AP) — The New York Yankees made the first of what could be a flurry of moves ahead of next week’s trade deadline, acquiring All-Star outfielder Andrew Benintendi from the Kansas City Royals for three minor league pitchers. 

Right-handers Chandler Champlain and Beck Way went to the Royals with left-hander T.J. Sikkema. Benintendi, a 28-year-old left-handed hitter, was among 10 Royals who missed a four-game series at Toronto from July 14-17 because he was not vaccinated. New York believes he is amenable to getting vaccinated. 

No Yankees missed earlier trips to Toronto this season, and the Yankees have a three-game series there from Sept. 26-28. Benintendi is hitting .320 this season and a reigning Gold Glover. The Royals play at Yankee Stadium on Thursday night.

Wichita,&nbsp;KS-&nbsp;The Northwest Arkansas Naturals defeated the Wind Surge 5-0 on Wednesday night behind twelve hits and five scoreless innings pitched from Naturals starter Dante Biasi to even up the series.

Biasi got the start on the mound for the Naturals and pitched five scoreless innings and allowed one hit with five strikeouts to earn his sixth win of the season.

The Naturals scored a run in the first and second innings as Nick Loftin grounded out on a fielder’s choice to score a runner. Tucker Bradley followed with a bases loaded walk to give Northwest Arkansas a 2-0 lead.

Center Fielder John Rave extended the lead to 3-0 in the fourth inning as he hit his tenth home run of the season off Surge starter Casey Legumina. Rave finished one for three with an RBI and a walk in the game.

Northwest Arkansas scored two more runs in the top of the sixth inning behind an RBI sacrifice fly from Loftin and an RBI single from Robbie Glendinning to take a commanding 5-0 lead.

Wichita, KS- The Wind Surge defeated the Northwest Arkansas Naturals 9-3 on Tuesday night as Cole Sturgeon and Chris Williams each hit homers to power the Surge to a series-opening victory.

Williams put the Surge on the board with a home run in the bottom of the first to give Wichita an early 2-0 lead. Williams finished one for two with two RBIs and two walks in the game.

Simeon Woods-Richardson came in relief in the third inning in his first appearance since June 11th and pitched two scoreless innings and tallied a strikeout before being relieved in the fifth inning.

IRVING, Texas&nbsp;– One of the most decorated players in Kansas men’s basketball history, Ochai Agbaji can add 2021-22 Big 12 Male Athlete of the Year to his list of honors as the conference announced its athletes of the year awards Monday. Oklahoma softball player Jocelyn Alo is the league’s 2021-22 female athlete of the year.

Nominees are submitted by Big 12 institutions and selected based on athletic performance during the 2021-22 school year by a media panel. Nominees must be in good academic standing.

"What a great honor to be named this among all the athletes in the Big 12. It is humbling to be listed among Heisman Trophy winners, other national champions and great athletes. This would not be possible without my teammates, coaches and the KU support staff. We had a great run to the national title and it took a lot of people to get there, not just me."

Since the league started in 1996-97, Agbaji is the fourth Jayhawk to be named Big 12 Male Athlete of the Year, with all four being men’s basketball players – Jacque Vaughn in 1997, Nick Collison in 2003 and Frank Mason III, who was a co-recipient in 2017. Historically, Kansas’ Danny Manning (1988) and Rex Walters (1993) were Big Eight Conference Male Athletes of the Year, making Agbaji the sixth KU men’s basketball player to earn the honor. Overall, Agbaji is the ninth Kansas conference athlete of the year honoree joining the aforementioned and Nolan Cromwell, football (1977), Lynette Woodard, women’s basketball (1981) and Tammy Thomas, women’s swimming (1983).

The Kansas City, Missouri, native is Kansas’ 31st all-time Consensus All-America First Team selection, which is more than any other school. Agbaji was named the unanimous 2022 Big 12 Player of the Year after leading the conference in scoring with an average of 18.8 points per game.

A four-year starter for KU, Agbaji has etched his name into the Kansas records book. He set the record for consecutive games of three-point field goals made at 53. Agbaji concluded his KU career ranked 15th on the KU career scoring list with 1,652 points, fourth on the three-point field goals made (250), fourth on three-point field goals attempted (670) and ninth in minutes played (3,978).

NBC World Series to open Thursday in Hutchinson

Tulsa, OK- The Wind Surge fell short in the series finale against the Tulsa Drillers 3-0 on Sunday afternoon behind home runs from Carson Taylor and Jonny DeLuca as the Drillers clinched the Propeller series for the first time.

Carson Taylor got things started for Tulsa as he broke the tie in the bottom of the second inning with a home run to give the Drillers a 1-0 lead. Taylor finished three for three with an RBI in the afternoon.

Tulsa scored two more runs in the bottom of the fifth courtesy of a home run from Jonny DeLuca to extend the Drillers lead to 3-0.

Kyle Hurt got the start on the mound for Tulsa and pitched four scoreless innings and allowed four hits and recorded seven strikeouts before being revived in the fifth inning. The Drillers bullpen pitched five scoreless innings as Keegan Curtis earned his second win on the year. 

The Wind Surge will resume action on Tuesday; June 26th for a six-game series against the Northwest Arkansas Naturals at Riverfront Stadium. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m.

Wichita started the game with back-to-back home runs in the first inning. Jair Camargo and Chris Williams drilled solo home runs to give the Surge the early advantage.

Tulsa answered with pair of runs in the first to tie the game. Wichita scored a pair in the second on consecutive doubles from Leobaldo Cabrera and Edouard Julien to plate two.

Tulsa’s Ryan January homered in the fourth inning to cut the deficit to one run. The Drillers sent eight hitters to the plate in the fifth inning and scored five runs to take the lead.

The Drillers matched their season high with 18 hits and hit six home runs on the night including a pair from Ryan Ward.

Alec Gamboa pitched three scoreless innings of relief to earn the win. Brent Headrick made his debut for the Surge and suffered the loss allowing seven runs.

Drillers win over Wichita Saturday

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Brady Singer struck out a career-high 12, Michael A. Taylor and Bobby Witt Jr. homered off Ryan Yarbrough in a three-run eighth inning and the Kansas City Royals beat the Tampa Bay Rays 6-3 on Saturday night.

Singer, a 25-year-old right-hander in his third major league season, allowed two runs — one earned — three hits and two walks in six innings.

With the score 3-3, Taylor hit his sixth home run this season and first since June 25. Witt hit a two-run drive off Yarbrough (0-5), who has given up seven home runs this season.

Scott Barlow (4-2) allowed three hits in two scoreless innings.

Surge win seventh straight

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Yandy Diaz hit a three-run double, Drew Rasmussen allowed one run over five innings and the Tampa Bay Rays returned from the All-Star break with a 7-3 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Friday night at Kauffman Stadium.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A former employee of the Kansas City Royals Urban Youth Academy is suing the team for racial discrimination and a hostile environment, but the team says the allegations are “without merit.”

According to court documents, Cleitus Ross says he was subject to a hostile environment, and subsequently fired from his position, because of his race.

The Royals responded on Wednesday in a statement, saying the Urban Youth Academy does not discriminate on basis of race, color, disability, gender, religion, age, or sexual orientation.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A former employee of the Kansas City Royals Urban Youth Academy is suing the team for racial discrimination and a hostile environment, but the team says the allegations are “without merit.”According to court documents, Cleitus Ross says he was subject to a hostile environment, and subsequently fired from his position, because of his race.The Royals responded on Wednesday in a statement, saying the Urban Youth Academy does not discriminate on basis of race, color, disability, gender, religion, age, or sexual orientation.No court date has been set in the case.
