TOPEKA — Hutchinson Community College sophomore jumper Caleb Manning capped a strong 2023 indoor season by earning second-team All-America honors on Saturday at the 2023 NJCAA Indoor National Championships at the Washburn University Indoor Athletic Facility.

Manning was the highest-placing Blue Dragons at the 2023 Championships with a fourth-place finish in the men’s triple jump on Saturday.

Manning posted personal record with a career-best leap of 49 feet, 5.75 inches (15.08m). That mark was the second-best indoor triple jump in Blue Dragon indoor history.

Manning, who placed 11th on Friday in the long jump, is the highest placing Blue Dragon at the NJCAA Indoor Championships since Teegan Flanagan, who was the national runner-up in the 5,000 meters in 2021.

The Blue Dragons placed 21st in the final team standings with 21 points. South Plains and New Mexico Junior College tied for the men’s team championship with 107 points each. Iowa Western was third with 61 points.

The Blue Dragons had one other athletes competing on Saturday.

Thrower Christopher Brown placed seventh in the weight throw and added two points to the team point total. Brown’s top throw on Saturday was 53 feet, 5.75 inches (16.30m). Brown placed 10th on the shot put on Friday.

The Blue Dragons will open the 2023 outdoor season on Saturday, March 25 at the Mark A Phillips Invitational in Arkansas City.

Emmitt Matthews added 20 points and Tre Mitchell scored 14 for West Virginia, which has won three of four heading into the conference tournament. Before a sellout crowd, West Virginia rallied from 10 points down to take a 39-37 halftime lead and never trailed after that. Kansas State saw its four-game winning streak snapped. Markquis Nowell and Keyontae Johnson each scored 24 points for the Wildcats and Cam Carter finished with 13.

WACO, Texas (AP) — Jaren Holmes had 16 points and Iowa State ended a four-game losing streak with a 73-58 win over seventh-ranked Baylor. The 18-12 Cyclones played their first game Saturday since the dismissal of veteran guard Caleb Grill from the team earlier this week. They built as much as a 14-point lead before halftime. When Baylor had a 10-0 run early in the second half to cut its deficit to 36-32 with 15:29 left, the Cyclones responded with a spurt of 11 points in a row of their own. General manager Jeff Andrews says there is no timeline on when the star NASCAR driver will return. Elliott injured his left leg Friday while snowboarding in Colorado. HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The
Blue Dragons opened the NJCAA Region VI Tournament with a 102-79 thumping of
Northwest Tech on Saturday afternoon at the Sports Arena.&nbsp;

Hutchinson (20-11) will travel to Great Bend to face Barton (22-8) in the quarterfinals on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.

The Blue Dragons built
an early lead and took a 48-29 lead into the halftime break.

They had no problems in
the second half extending that lead to 30 with under six minutes left. The Dragons put the game on cruise control from that point.&nbsp;

HutchCC used another
strong offensive night from the floor, but it wasn’t so much from behind the
arc. The Blue Dragons did most of their damage in the lane, outscoring the
Mavericks 58-42. Hutchinson knocked down 39-of-75 shots (52 percent), while
also going a prolific 16-of-18 from the free-throw line.&nbsp;

Hutchinson won the
battle of the boards, 44-28 for a plus-16 performance. Twelve different players
collected at least one rebound. The Blue Dragons had 32 assists on 39
made field goals.&nbsp;

Thirteen different Blue
Dragons played in the game, 12 of which scored in the win. Aaron Potter paced
the HutchCC offense with 22 points off the bench, while Aaron Franklin and
Dadrevius Weathers each had 14.&nbsp;

Keyishon Miller, Arthur
Celestin and Quincy Snoddy Jr. each had 15 points to lead the Mavericks.&nbsp;

The Blue Dragons
improved to 42-8 all-time in opening/second round games of the Region VI

🏀 High School Sub-State Scores from Saturday

HUTCHINSON, Kan.—The Hutchinson Salthawk Boys Basketball team used a tight man-to-man defense from the opening tip to rattle the Topeka West Chargers, forcing numerous early turnovers on the way to an impressive 66-38 sub-state championship win at the Salthawk Activity Center (SAC) late Saturday afternoon.

It could have been like a scene out of the historic late 80's movie "Hoosiers" when Coach Norman Dale tells Buddy,&nbsp;

“Stick with your man. Think of him as chewing gum. By the end of the game, I want you to know what flavor he is.” That is how relentless the Salthawk defense was through out the whole game.

Then, the defense fueled the offense for Hutchinson as the Salthawks hit seven treys in the first half to take a commanding 36-20 lead at the half. The Hutchinson offense never faltered in the second half. The Salthawks added 30 more points over the next two quarters. 

The defensive pressure continued in the third and fourth quarters as the Salthawks kept forcing turnovers with a relentless trapping defense that frustrated the Chargers and contributed to their eighth loss of the season. Hutch forced a running clock over the final 4 minutes of the fourth quarter to seal the win, 66-38.

Hutchinson was led in scoring by Garrett Robertson with 17 points. Julian Smith was outstanding coming off the bench to score 14, including four three pointers. Terrell King had his usual solid effort with 14 points. Wade Meyer scored in double-figures for the second straight game with 11 points. Brayden Rodriquez started for the injured Nic Lange and scored four. Lange did play some limited minutes and scored two points as did Devon Spiller and Dauntay King to round out the Salthawk scoring.

Topeka West was led in scoring by Keimani Paul with 10 pts. Xavier Alexander had eight, Calab Noonoo six, Malachi Berg and Mason Jones scored four each. Malakyah Duncan, Ja'Vian Chambers and Eliha Guest had two each.&nbsp; Topeka West's season ends at 14-8.

The class 5A State Basketball Boys' Tournament has its first round on Thursday with first round games being played at White Auditorium in Emporia.

This will be the second trip to State for the Salthawks in the past three seasons. Hutch also qualified in 2021 in Coach Bryan Miller's first season.

Hutchinson (21-1) will have to wait until Sunday morning to see where they will be seeded, but most likely they will be the #3 seed and will draw Pittsburg. Pittsburg (17-5) edged Shawnee Heights 53-52 to win their sub-state Saturday night. 

There will be a couple Cinderella teams in this years State Tournament with a 14 sub-state seed Basehor-Linwood (9-13) winning by beating the #3 seed KC-Piper in the first round. #10 seed Overland Park Blue Valley Southwest (14-8) took out the #2 seed and #7 seed to win their sub-state.

MANHATTAN, Kansas –&nbsp;K-State concluded its 2022-23 season on Saturday evening at Bramlage Coliseum, as (12/17) Texas captured a share of the 2022-23 Big 12 regular season title with an 80-52 win. In a postgame ceremony, K-State recognized the careers of its two departing seniors,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/emilee-ebert/8605">Emilee Ebert</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/sarah-shematsi/9881">Sarah Shematsi</a>. K-State (16-15, 5-13 Big 12) was led by sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/serena-sundell/8612">Serena Sundell</a>&nbsp;with 12 points, six assists and three steals while Shematsi tallied 11 points. Texas (23-8, 14-4) placed four in double figures led by Shaylee Gonzales with 21 points, while Taylor Jones came off the bench to add 17. HOW IT HAPPENED - K-State was forced into 15 first half turnovers and scored a season-low 14 points in the first half, as Texas held a 39-14 advantage at halftime.&nbsp; - The Wildcats shot 26.3 percent (5-of-19) from the floor in the first 20 minutes, while the Longhorns carded a 44.1 percent (15-of-34) effort. Texas built its advantage with a 22-8 edge in points in the paint and a 8-of-9 (.889) effort from the foul line. - K-State struggled from the field in the third quarter, shooting 25.0 percent (3-of-12) from the floor and 1-of-6 from beyond the arc. However, the Wildcats only dropped the frame, 16-14. - In the final quarter, K-State found its range and shot 87.5 percent (7-of-8) from the field and 4-of-4 from beyond the arc to register 24 points in the fourth quarter. - The Wildcats finished the evening shooting 38.5 percent (15-of-39) from the field, including 42.9 percent (6-of-14) from three-point range.&nbsp; - Texas ended the game shooting 46.9 percent (30-of-64) from the floor, including 40.0 percent (4-of-10) from 3-point range. The Longhorns registered a 38-18 advantage on points in the paint and converted 15 offensive rebounds into a 19-2 edge in second chance points. This season's three-point field goals made total is a new season-high in the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/coaches/jeff-mittie/1817">Jeff Mittie</a>&nbsp;era and the tied for the fifth-most in school history. - With its 14 3-point attempts on Saturday, K-State increased its season total for 3-point attempts to 794. The 794 attempts ranks second in school history for 3-point attempts in a season. - With its 24 point fourth quarter, K-State has registered 43 quarters this season with 20 or more points. This equals the program-high set in the 2017-18 season. PLAYER NOTES - Sundell reached double figures in points for the 22nd time this season and the 41st time in her career. - With her six assists, Sundell moved into 12th on the K-State career assists list with 334. Saturday was the 18th game this season and the 38th of Sundell's career with five or more assists. She has led K-State in assists in 51 of her 64 career games. - Sundell carded three steals on Saturday. This was her 23rd career game and her 14th this season with two or more steals.&nbsp; - With her six made free throws on Saturday, Sundell has made 144 free throws this season. With her total, Sundell ranks second in school history for free throws made in a season. Sundell's free throws attempted of 183 ranks sixth in school history for a single season and the most by a guard in program history. Her 183 free throw attempts are the most by a Wildcat since Nicole Ohlde attempted 196 free throws in the 2003-04 season. - Shematsi notched her sixth game with 10 or more points this season and the eighth of her career. - Shematsi made 3 three-pointers on Saturday, her 14th career game with two or more connections from 3-point range.&nbsp; - Gregory improved her season total for free throws made to 142. She ranks third in school history for free throws made in a season and has set the school record for free throws made by a senior in a season. -&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/jaelyn-glenn/8607">Jaelyn Glenn</a>&nbsp;pocketed two steals on Saturday. She has a career-high 75 steals this season, which is tied for the 10th most steals in a single season in program history. Glenn owns 22 games this season and 33 career games with two or more steals. I think that you had a team that knew they're playing for a championship that played very well. You had us coming off of a really physical and mentally tough loss the other night. We just couldn't quite seem to get our energy and focus where it needed to be. And then, you know, we've been a team that at times haven't figured out how to match up with certain teams very well. And we just didn't play very well. You know, Texas turns people over, but we really handed them turnovers early in this game. And that's what we couldn't do early in the game was to give them free offense. And we did." On what made Texas a tough opponent… "Their guard pressure really forced us where we have not been able to run offense very well and their size gives a lot of people trouble certainly. I think they have two things. I think those two things give us two really big problems and while we've been able to counter one at times with people from an offensive standpoint, it gave us a lot of trouble today. And defensively, I mean, the second chance points, Jones was killing us early in the game and so we just have not countered that very well." On what Texas did to shut down&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/gabby-gregory/8613">Gabby Gregory</a>… "I think it starts with we just weren't able to get ball movement and we weren't able to get her free at all. And then, I think Gabby was questioning at times. I think she had windows but those windows closed pretty fast. So we are just not on time with passes. Their guard pressure had a lot to do with that and in any type of a small window that Gabby had she had trouble trusting it. " On what he told the team at half time… "I wanted us to compete harder quite frankly, every loose ball went to them in the first half, every effort play went to them. We were a little stunned. I wanted us to compete and win some one-on-one matchups. We've talked about that before. We were losing every one-on-one matchup. The half time speech is more about playing the game the right way, playing with tremendous energy, and pride. Those kinds of things because there wasn't X's and O's we might try and run a few things but you don't win those one-on-ones there's not anything you can run if your players aren't winning some of those battles." And we just didn't play very well. You know, Texas turns people over, but we really handed them turnovers early in this game. On what made Texas a tough opponent… "Their guard pressure really forced us where we have not been able to run offense very well and their size gives a lot of people trouble certainly. I think they have two things. I think those two things give us two really big problems and while we've been able to counter one at times with people from an offensive standpoint, it gave us a lot of trouble today. And defensively, I mean, the second chance points, Jones was killing us early in the game and so we just have not countered that very well." The half time speech is more about playing the game the right way, playing with tremendous energy, and pride. It’s the second-straight season that KU finishes with a conference mark of .500 or better, a feat last accomplished by the program in 1999-2000. "I really like how we played on both ends and I think our bunch played really well today," Kansas Coach Brandon Schneider said.&nbsp;"I think the game honors toughness, and Chandler Prater proved that today. We have done everything we could these past few games to try and add to our resume, and I hope we have proved that we are worthy of being selected into the NCAA Tournament." Despite trailing 10-4 in the early minutes, the Kansas offense came to life and used a 6-0 lead to tie the game. Holly Kersgieter and Zakiyah Franklin, who combined for 11 points in the quarter, combined for a 5-0 run to close the quarter as KU took a 17-16 lead at the end of one. The Jayhawks extended the lead to 39-33 at halftime as the pace of play picked up and Chandler Prater got going with 10 points on 5-of-7 shooting. KU’s defense also held TCU to just three points over the final 4:46, outscoring the Horned Frogs 11-3 in that stretch. AUSTIN, Texas (AP) —&nbsp;Sir’Jabari Rice scored 23 points and a smothering defensive effort carried No. 9 Texas to a 75-59 win over No. 3 Kansas on Saturday that earned the Longhorns a second-place finish in the Big 12.

Kansas, which had already secured the league championship earlier in the week, had its seven-game winning streak snapped, despite Jalen Wilson’s 10th&nbsp;double-double of the season.

Texas entered the day in a three-way tie for second but the win and losses by Kansas State and Baylor left the Longhorns alone in the spot.

Tyrese Hunter made 9 of 10 free throws and scored 20 points for the Longhorns (23-8, 12-6).

Wilson, the Big 12 scoring and rebounding leader, led Kansas (25-6, 13-5) with 23 points and 10 boards for his 26th&nbsp;career double-double.

Texas swarmed Kansas with a defensive effort that frustrated Wilson and the Jayhawks from the opening tip.

Kansas scored just 12 points over the first 12 minutes and missed nine of 12 3-point attempts in the half. Wilson, who scored just two points when Kansas beat Texas on Feb. 6, struggled to find open shots or even open passes, despite his 23-point performance.

Hunter made consecutive deep 3-pointers late in the half as Texas built a 32-24 lead at the break.

The Longhorns quickly stretched the lead in opening minutes of the second half. Dylan Disu scored the first five points after halftime, and Rice’s 3-pointer pushed the lead to 15.

Kansas got within eight when Gradey Dick made consecutive 3-pointers, his first baskets of the game, before Texas answered with six consecutive points. Rice then ran off seven straight points, including a 3-pointer from the left corner, and Texas led 68-52 with 3:30 to play.

Dajuan Harris Jr., finished with seven assists and no turnovers to go with five points and five rebounds in 37 minutes. Kevin McCullar Jr., had eight points and six rebounds, while KJ Adams Jr., finished with nine points.

Kansas:&nbsp;The Big 12 champs won a league many consider the toughest in the country and are still a contender for a No. 1 seed for the NCAA Tournament. The defending national champions head into the Big 12 tourney having won nine of their last 12.

Texas:&nbsp;Interim coach Rodney Terry’s future with the program was probably always going to depend on the Longhorns’ postseason success. He might have eased that pressure had Texas won at least a share of the program’s first conference title in 15 years. But finishing second with an emphatic win over the league champ is better than many would have predicted when Texas fired coach Chris Beard in midseason.

The Big 12 Tournament starts Wednesday in Kansas City, Missouri. Kansas will be the No. 1 seed. Texas will be No. 2.

🏀 MBB: Kansas to face Texas Saturday in Austin

BEAUMONT, Texas — Teddy Allen led five double-figure scorers with 22 points to aid the Wichita Sky Kings to their first TBL (The Basketball League) win over the SouthEast Texas Panthers in Beaumont, Texas, on Friday night 114-99.

The TBL has been around for a few years, but the Wichita Sky Kings is a new franchise based out of Wichita.

The Sky Kings will compete in the Central Division of the TBL.

Allen paced the Sky Kings with red hot 53.3% shooting, including 3 for 6 three-point shooting.&nbsp; As a team, the Sky Kings shot 60% on 48 of 80 shooting from the field.

Allen was aided by 18 Brandon Watkins' points. Derrick Colter, Matthew Cerruti and Terrell Brown each had 17. Jachai Simmons added seven points. Charles Marquardt and Kameron Willams had six points each. D'von Andrews and Johnny McCants wrapped up the scoring with two points each.

Next action for the Wichita Sky Kings will be Sunday night at 7 as they travel to Pearland to take on the Pearland Texas Warriors. Wichita will finish out its start-of-the-season road trip with games in Rockwall, Texas, on March 11 and Enid, Oklahoma, on March 12.&nbsp;&nbsp;

TOPEKA – Hutchinson Community College sophomore Dimetre Browne placed in the NJCAA Indoor Championship long jump for the second-straight season on Friday at the Washburn Indoor Athletic Center.

Browne placed sixth on Friday with a jump of 24 feet, 1.75 inches to earn third-team All-America honors. Last season, Browne placed eighth in the long jump.

Browne was 11th after the first two jumps in the second flight. He hit a jump to propel him into the finals on his final jump of prelims at 24-11.75. Browne nailed his best jump of the day on the second jump of finals when he went 24-1.75.

Brown scored the only points for the Blue Dragons on Friday. Hutchinson is tied with Vincennes University for 19th after Day 1 with three points. Colby is the men’s team leader after Day 1 with 32 points. Iowa Western and New Mexico Junior College are tied for second with 31 points and South Plains is fourth with 29.

Thrower Christopher Browne placed 10th in the men’s shot put on Friday with a best distance of 49 feet, 9 inches (15.16m).

Sophomore Caleb Manning was 11th in the long jump with a jump of 23-2 (7.06m).

Alexander Holt competed in two events on Friday. He was 12th in the high jump with a clearance of 6-4.25 (1.94m). He placed 16th in the 60-meter hurdle preliminaries with a time of 8.33 seconds.

Darrien Holloway was 19th in the 60-meter hurdles prelims with a time of 8.45 seconds.

Sprinter Ezekiel Seamster was 32nd in the 60-meter preliminaries with a time of 6.94 seconds.

The Blue Dragons have two athletes in action on Saturday in Topeka.

TOPEKA – The Hutchinson Community College women’s track and field team’s Distance Medley Relay scored the only points on Day 1 of the NJCAA Indoor Championships on Friday at Washburn University.

The Blue Dragon relay unit of freshman Gracie Lambert, sophomore Keneah Romney, freshman Ellie Van Zelfden and freshman Taylor Hoskinson placed eighth overall with a time of 13 minutes, 3.56 seconds.

The Blue Dragon women are tied for 23rd after Day 1 at the national championships with one point. Hutchinson is tied with Hawkeye community College. Jayhawk Conference rival Barton has the Day 1 lead with 38 points. New Mexico Junior College has 35 points and Cloud County and Iowa Western are tied for third with 31 points.

Lambert advanced to the 800-meter finals on Saturday, placing ninth in the preliminaries with a time of 2:22.61.

Freshman distance runner Serenity Larson just missed the podium in the 5,000-meter finals on Friday. Larson finished 10th with a time of 19:01.09.

With the spring men’s golf season less than two weeks away, the Hutchinson Community College Blue Dragons start the 2023 season ranked No. 1 in both national polls, which were released this week.

The two-time defending national championship Blue Dragons are No. 1 in both the Golfweek/Bushnell Rankings and the NJCAA Division I Coaches Rankings.

The Blue Dragons had three Top 5 team finishes in four fall tournaments that were primarily NCAA Division I and Division II fields. The Dragons finished second at the NJCAA National Preview in Newton, second at the Proal Classic in Amarillo, Texas and fourth at the Shocker Open in Wichita.

Blue Dragon All-American Dominic Clemons continues to rank No. 1 in the GolfStat Player rankings. Fellow sophomore Blake Saffell is ranked No. 5 and freshman Alex Lindstrom is ranked No. 8.

The Hutchinson Community College men's basketball team will make its 72nd appearance in the Region VI Tournament with an opening-round matchup against the Northwest Tech Mavericks.

Seeded sixth in the tournament, the Blue Dragons (19-11) play host to the 11th-seeded Mavericks (12-18) at 2 p.m. on Saturday at the Hutchinson Sports Arena. The Hutchinson/Northwest Tech winner will travel to No. 3 seed Barton on Tuesday in Great Bend.

Blue Dragon flagship station KHUT-FM (102.9) and sister stations KWBW-AM/FM (1450.98.5) will broadcast the game with Glen Grunwald (play-by-play) and Dan Naccarato (color) calling the action. The game will also be streamed live on the Blue Dragon Sports Network. Both broadcasts start at 1:45 p.m.

The Blue Dragons are 142-51 all-time in the Region VI Tournament. Hutchinson is 41-8 all-time in opening/second-round games in tournament history.

Saturday's matchup will be the third Region VI Tournament matchup between Hutchinson and Northwest Tech. The Blue Dragons opened up their run to the 2013 Region VI championship with a 90-82 victory over the Mavericks at the Sports Arena. The Dragons defeated the Mavericks 92-81 in the 2014 Region VI Semifinals.

Then on Feb. 18 at the Sports Arena, the Blue Dragons shot a season-high 64.6 percent and nailed 14 3-point goals in a 115-74 victory.

The Blue Dragons enter the Region VI Tournament on a four-game winning streak after a decisive 80-60 victory over No. 23 Garden City on Wednesday at the Sports Arena. Dre Weathers and&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2022-23/bios/frederick_ra-sean_ozi1">Ra'Sean Frederick</a>&nbsp;scored 17 points each to pace the Blue Dragons.

Hutchinson's defense has been strong over the last four games. The Blue Dragons are allowing 68.0 points per game and 46.2 percent shooting to the last four Hutchinson opponents. The Dragons are a plus 14.4 in rebounding margin. Offensively over that span, the Blue Dragons are averaging 90.0 points per game and are shooting 54.4 percent, the best four-game stretch for Hutchinson this season shooting the ball.

Northwest Tech sent shock waves through the Jayhawk Conference on the final day of the regular season on Wednesday when the Mavericks upset Coffeyville 81-77 in Goodland. That prevented the Red Ravens from tying Dodge City as conference champions.

ANDOVER, Kan.—The Hutchinson Salthawk Girls Basketball team had a&nbsp; dream of being in next weeks Class 5A State Tournament. That dream came up short in Andover Friday night as Andover Central defeated Hutchinson 39-27.

The Jaguars got off to a quick 8-0 run pushing the ball on every opportunity that the Salthawks gave them to take quick control of the game.

But Hutchinson wasn't intimidated. Hutch put together a 6-0 run of their own to pull within two at 8-6 in the first quarter. Andover Central ended the first frame on a 7-1 run and never looked back.

The Jaguars had a 10 point lead at half and kept that lead going into the final quarter leading 32-22.

The Salthawk ladies tried to work the ball inside, but the Jaguar defense was strong and the Salthawks season came to an end with the 12 point loss.

Hutchinson (16-6) was led in scoring by Aliyah Green with eight points, Grace Posch had five, Hannah Ames and Mya Thompson four points each, Lilly Rodriquez and Aiyanna Green each added three.

Andover Central (17-5) was led in scoring by Hayden Snodgrass with 15 points, Jaylee Jefferson 13, Madelyn Amekporfor had seven, Taylin Tabor and Savannah Weidler had 2 points each.

The Jaguars will play Wednesday in Emporia.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Boys &amp; Girls Clubs of Hutchinson welcomes Jerry Jacobs, a cornerback for the Detroit Lions, back to where his NFL journey began, Gowans Stadium.

Jacobs’ path to the NFL started in a place where many promising football careers end: in junior college. Hutchinson Community College gave Jacobs his opportunity to start and show that he was capable of playing at a high level. Jacobs’ journey is one of facing difficult odds and persevering. He credits his mother with instilling in him the importance of giving back to the community.

Boys &amp; Girls Clubs of Hutchinson is joining with the YMCA of Hutchinson and Blue Dragon Football to host a skills and drills combine for 1st-8th grade, that will be hosted by Jacobs, HCC Blue Dragon Football and Salthawk Football at Gowans stadium on March 11, 2023.

NFL player in Hutchinson next week

WICHITA — The Buhler girls finished 4th and the boys 5th at the Class 5-1A State Bowling Tournament Thursday at Wichita-Northrock Lanes.

Kenzie Welch was the top Crusader girl, finishing 10th. Trent Sheridan was 7th and Landon Kurtz was 17th.

Two Hutch boys and one girl placed at state as individuals, with Jaxson Green 12th and Brody Ummel 14th overall and Chloe Glaser was 11th in the girls 5-1A state tourney.

Individual champions were Salina South's Riley Lambeth for the girls and DeSoto's Colby Lovegren for the boys.

He also scored at least 20 points for the sixth straight game, and chants of “Sasser” filled the Fertitta Center after it was over. Jarace Walker had 131 points and nine rebounds for Houston, which has won 10 straight games and is 28-2 overall. Otzelberger said Grill had failed to meet program expectations. Grill was the Cyclones’ third-leading scorer and started 22 of 25 games. Grill says he’s been battling mental illness. He thanked Otzelberger for the opportunity to play for the Cyclones. He thanked his family for support when he might have made a decision that would have cost him his life.

Detroit Mercy's star guard finished four points shy of breaking Pete Maravich's NCAA career scoring record, a mark that has stood since 1970.
