After a second-straight decisive victory on Saturday, the Hutchinson Community College football team solidified its grip on the No. 1 spot in this week’s NJCAA Division I Football Rankings.
The new poll, released on Tuesday this week because of the Labor Day holiday, revealed the Blue Dragons will be in a Top 5 matchup on Saturday as Hutchinson travels to No. 5 Iowa Central this week.
Hutchinson (2-0) received 9 of 10 first-place votes to increase its lead over No. 2 Iowa Western (149-141). The Blue Dragons defeated Ellsworth 72-7 last Saturday at Gowans Stadium.
The top four teams – Hutchinson, Iowa Western, Northwest Mississippi and Kilgore – remained the same, but Iowa Central jumped up four spots to No. 5 after defeating previous No. 5 Garden City 30-20, rallying from a 13-point deficit to win.
Two other Jayhawk Conference teams are in this week’s rankings. Garden City (1-1) dropped to No. 10 and Butler (1-1) moved up one spot to No. 12. Dodge City (1-1) is receiving votes. The Blue Dragons have been ranked in 20 consecutive ranking period.
