BUHLER, Kan.&nbsp;— The Buhler High School girls soccer season came to a close on Monday evening, falling 2-0 to Wichita Trinity at Crusader Stadium.

The Knights opened the scoring in the 23rd minute, and then would add another goal in the 60th minute to seal the win.

Buhler ends the season with a 7-9-1 record, while Wichita Trinity improves to 8-8-0 and will advance to play at Wichita Independent (13-3-0) on Thursday in the regional championship game.

⚾ Miller's complete game propels Haven to regional semi

HAYS, Kan.&nbsp;— The Hutchinson High School boys golf team placed second at the KSHSAA class 5A regional on Monday at Smoky Hill Country Club in Hays. The Salthawks finished two strokes behind Salina South for the regional championship.&nbsp;

The Cougars shot a 353, while the Salthawks recorded a 355. Hays High came in third place with a 359.

Hutchinson senior Ty Adkins recorded a 7-over par score of 78 to claim the top spot on the individual leaderboard, while Salina South sophomore Jackson Perry finished second with a 10-over par score of 81.

Junior Roman Kulick-Hart and sophomore Mitchell Rice finished tied for 10th place with a 20-over score of 91 to finish as the second and third highest Salthawks on the leaderboard.

This is the fifth weekly honor of the season for Tolle and his first selection as Pitcher of the Week. He was previously named Player of the Week on March 6 and April 24. Rodden's&nbsp;Honor Roll selection is his first this season after earning three such awards in 2022. Tolle became the first Shocker pitcher since Charlie Lowell in 2011 to win nine games in a season, picking up the victory in Saturday's 9-2 win over South Florida. The southpaw went 7.0 innings, struck out 10, walked two, and allowed just four hits and two runs. It's the eighth quality start in 13 tries this season for Tolle, and his fourth with 10 or more strikeouts. He has walked more than two batters just once in a game this season.

Rodden torched Bulls pitching over the weekend, recording three mult-hit games to help the Shockers to a series win. After a 3-for-5 performance with a home run in the series opener, Rodden delivered a career-high four hits in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader, including two doubles and another homer. He capped off the series with two more hits in the nightcap, adding a stolen base and three runs scored. All told in the series, the electrifying second baseman drove in seven runs and scored five.

Rodden leads the circuit with a .456 on-base percentage and 60 RBI, ranks second with a .680 slugging percentage and 53 runs scored, and is&nbsp;fifth in the conference with a .355 batting average. ⚾ Tolle named AAC Pitcher of the Week

MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;– Kansas State Director of Athletics Gene Taylor announced today that head football coach&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/football/roster/coaches/chris-klieman/1976">Chris Klieman</a>, who guided the Wildcats to a Big 12 Championship in 2022, has signed a new eight-year contract that sees him at the helm of the program through the 2030 season.

Klieman, who is entering his fifth year in Manhattan in 2023, will be paid an average base salary of $5.5 million throughout the life of the contract. "Chris has done an unbelievable job building a program in four years that not only has won a Big 12 Championship, but even more importantly, one that players have taken great pride in and helped sustain a championship culture," Taylor said. "He is a tremendous fit for K-State and Manhattan, and we want to continue to ride the momentum that he and his staff have fostered. We are excited that Chris will be the leader of our football program for many years to come." Klieman holds a 30-20 record at K-State, which includes a 10-4 record last season when the Wildcats won the 2022 Big 12 Championship with a 31-28 overtime victory over No. 3 TCU. It was K-State's third Big 12 title and first since 2012, while it was the Wildcats' first 10-win season in 10 years. Additionally, K-State is 5-3 against teams ranked in the top 10 of the Associated Press poll since Klieman took over the reins in 2019, the most victories over top-10 teams by any Big 12 program over the span. A school-record three of those wins came during the 2022 season. The Wildcats had four players drafted off the 2022 team, including Anudike-Uzomah who was the first-round selection of the Kansas City Chiefs to become the first Wildcat selected in the first round since 2009. Cornerback&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/football/roster/julius-brents/8508">Julius Brents</a>&nbsp;was selected in the second round – No. 44 overall – by the Indianapolis Colts, marking the first time in school history that two Wildcats were selected within the first 44 picks of an NFL Draft. Additionally, Vaughn (Dallas Cowboys) and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/football/roster/josh-hayes/8594">Josh Hayes</a>&nbsp;(Tampa Bay Buccaneers) were picked in the sixth round of the draft. A proven winner with a championship history, Klieman was named the 35th head football coach in Kansas State history on December 10, 2018. His 30 wins are the most in school history by a head coach in their first four years and already the fifth most total wins overall in school history. Included in those 30 overall wins, Klieman has kept the Governor's Cup trophy in Manhattan with four victories over in-state rival KU, has collected 20 Big 12 Conference wins and seen his teams play in three bowl games. Thanks to his 30 wins in Manhattan, Klieman holds a career head coaching record of 102-33 as his 75.6% winning percentage ranks fourth among current FBS coaches that have led programs for at least 10 seasons, trailing only Clemson's Dabo Swinney (80.5%), Alabama's Nick Saban (80.1%) and James Madison's Curt Cignetti (76.1%). Not only has Klieman's tenure produced success on the field, but his mantra of "how you do one thing is how you do everything" has brought success in the classroom. Over Klieman's first four seasons, K-State has a combined 133 Academic All-Big 12 honors – the second most in the conference during that timeframe – which includes a school record 34 in each of the last two seasons. Additionally, the Wildcats boast a pair of National Football Foundation National Scholar-Athletes under Klieman in Adam Holtorf (2019) and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/football/roster/adrian-martinez/8597">Adrian Martinez</a>&nbsp;(2022). Byron was pushed out of the lead by eventual winner Joey Logano two laps from the end here a year ago. This time, Byron watched as Chastain and Larson collided, then drove away from Kevin Harvick for his third win this year and the seventh of his career. It was the 100th win for the No. 24 car of Hendrick Motorsports.

McKINNEY, Texas (AP) — Jason Day has his first PGA Tour victory in five years at the Byron Nelson. The Australian shot a 9-under 62 for a one-shot victory over Austin Eckroat and Si Woo Kim. Hometown favorite Scottie Scheffler finished three shots back. Day broke a tie with Scheffler with a chip-in birdie at the par-4 12th. Day finished at 23 under playing on Mother's Day a little more than a year after losing his mom to cancer. Day's win came the week before the PGA Championship. The only major among the 35-year-old's 13 victories was the 2015 PGA.

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Christian Yelich continued to heat up at the plate and created even more fireworks on the basepaths as he helped the Milwaukee Brewers complete a sweep of the Kansas City Royals.

After homering twice on Saturday,&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/BallySportWI/status/1657814065324982281">Yelich went deep again</a>&nbsp;Sunday in the Brewers' 9-6 victory. He also hit an RBI single and scored on a bizarre play as part of Milwaukee’s seven-run outburst in the third inning.

Yelich is batting .348 (16 of 46) with four homers and 12 RBIs in May. The 2018 NL MVP hit just .228 with three homers and 11 RBIs in April.

“I'm just making adjustments and just trying to find ways to contribute,” Yelich said. “You're constantly tinkering with things and trying to be the best version of yourself, whatever that is, each day. For me, each day's a new day."

After his RBI single put runners on the corners with nobody out in the third, Yelich attempted to steal second.&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/BallySportWI/status/1657826078574927875">That’s when things got weird.</a>

Royals shortstop Maikel Garcia missed the throw from Perez, and Joey Wiemer raced home from third as the ball went into the outfield. After sliding into second, Yelich got up and took off for third.

The throw from center fielder Nate Eaton took a couple of bounces, went through Dozier's legs and appeared to bounce off the body of Brewers third-base coach Jason Lane. As the ball started to roll back toward home in foul territory, Yelich headed toward the plate.

Dozier chased down the ball, dove and pushed the ball toward Perez, but his toss couldn’t get there before Yelich slid home safely with the tying run. Garcia and Eaton were charged with errors on the play.

“I don't really think (Eaton's throw) was off line,” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. “I think it just got hidden behind the runner going second to third, so Dozier couldn't find it. He said as it came out from underneath the runner, he tried to block it and it just got through him, and then obviously it got kicked by the third base coach and it was just a comedy of errors at that point.”

Owen Miller delivered an RBI double later in the inning. Brice Turang capped the rally by sending a 2-2 changeup from Jose Cuas over the center-field wall for a 408-foot blast.

Royals starter Jordan Lyles (0-7) allowed seven runs – all earned – in 2 1/3 innings. Lyles owns a 7.14 ERA in his first season with the Royals, who signed him to a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/mlb-sports-kansas-city-royals-jordan-lyles-cb8526645597044d4449d08d7c5ad65a">two-year, $17 million contract</a>&nbsp;last December.

Milwaukee's Eric Lauer (4-4) struck out six and allowed two runs, two walks and two hits over 5 1/3 innings in his first relief appearance since 2021. Milwaukee manager Craig Counsell had said Saturday the Brewers would skip Lauer’s next scheduled start.

Lauer, who had lost his last three starts, entered in the fourth and didn't allow a hit until Dozier and Witt homered off him in the ninth.

“Overall it was a good job of kind of what I wanted to go out there and feel as far as just getting on the mound, competing and just kind of letting it loose and not worrying about how long I'm going to be in there and how many pitches I'm going to have to throw,” Lauer said. “It's that bullpen kind of mentality that I have to have. It was a good flip-switch for me.”

Brewers starter Colin Rea allowed four runs in 3 2/3 innings.

🥎 Shockers earn at-large bid in NCAA tournament

FRISCO, Texas – Yunior Severino hammered his fourth home run of the series and the Wichita Wind Surge won their season high fifth in a row defeating Frisco 12-3 on Saturday.

Severino had three hits on the day including the solo home run scored three runs and added two RBI for the Surge. Jake Rucker added two more hits and drove home five runs and has ten RBI in the last two games.&nbsp;

Wichita scored first getting three runs in the first inning and knocked out Riders starter Nick Krauth. The Surge offense scored double digit runs for the third time in four games. Frisco needed five pitchers on the day and the Wind Surge had eleven hits and drew ten walks.

David Festa worked five innings allowed one run in four hits and punched out four for his second win of the season.&nbsp;

The Surge improved to 15-17 and Frisco drops to 13-19 on the year.&nbsp;

NOTES – Royce Lewis on a rehab assignment for the Minnesota Twins played seven innings, and had two hits in three at bats, scored three runs, drove in a run and reached on a walk. The right-hander immediately collapsed to the ground as the ball deflected to first baseman C.J. Cron. Castellanos was safe with a single. Feltner didn’t appear to lose consciousness. He lay on his stomach and was squinting his eyes as two members of the Colorado training stuff sprinted to the mound. With the crowd hushed, Feltner eventually sat up, then got to his feet.

MILWAUKEE (AP) —&nbsp;Rookie Joey Wiemer’s sacrifice fly with one out in the ninth inning gave the Milwaukee Brewers a 4-3 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Saturday night.

Christian Yelich homered twice for Milwaukee, with the second tying it at 3 in the sixth with a shot off Josh Taylor, who relieved starter Zack Greinke to begin the inning.

Brian Anderson opened the ninth with a single off Carlos Hernandez (0-1), who came on in relief to start the inning. Owen Miller’s one-out double sent Anderson to third. Wiemer then sent an 0-1 pitch deep enough to center to easily score Anderson — and then got a Gatorade shower from his jubilant teammates to celebrate the win.

“I’m not sitting on a pitch in that situation," Wiemer said. "Just trying to get anything I can flick out in the outfield, do my job. Not trying to do too much there.”

Devin Williams (3-0) got the victory with a perfect ninth.

Salvador Perez opened the fifth with his eighth homer to put the Royals up 3-2, chasing starter Adrian Houser.

Houser, making his second start after four rehab starts at Triple-A, allowed three runs and eight hits as the Royals left six aboard through four innings, including three in scoring position.

“He was able to get out of it,” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. “The at-bats were good. Even when we got out in those situations, it wasn’t like just weak contact or whatever. We got into deeper counts and he made some pitches.”

Yelich tied it at 2 in the third with his fifth home run. Brice Turang led off with an infield single. And with two outs, Yelich sent a 2-0 pitch 427 feet to center.

Yelich is batting .333 (14-for-42) over his last 11 games with three homers, a double, 10 RBI, three walks, three stolen bases and eight runs scored.

“I’m just making adjustments, trying to be consistent up there and string together really good, quality at-bats and see what happens,” Yelich said. “They haven’t all really been falling. You’ve just got to stick with it and just try and continue to put good at-bats together, good swings.”

The Royals took a 1-0 lead in the first when Bobby Witt Jr. doubled, advanced on an infield single and scored on M.J. Melendez’s sacrifice fly.

Kansas City made it 2-0 in the third on consecutive two-out doubles by Melendez and Nick Pratto.

Greinke ended his five-inning outing by getting Wiemer on a called third strike, becoming the fifth pitcher in major league history to strike out 1,000 different batters — joining Nolan Ryan, Randy Johnson, Greg Maddux and Roger Clemens.

“I don’t ever think about it. I’ve heard about it a couple times, but it didn’t really cross my mind,” said Greinke, whose teammates were cheering from the dugout. “I still didn’t know anything was going on and then they were a little more excited than normal. LHP Eric Lauer, who has lost his last three starts, will skip a turn, but will be available out of the bullpen, Brewers manager Craig Counsell said Saturday. Lauer lasted just 3 2/3 innings on Tuesday, giving up four runs — three earned — in a 6-2 loss to the Dodgers. Lauer has given up eight homers and walked 16 in 34 1/3 innings.

With the Royals bullpen giving up the lead, Greinke is winless in his last 21 road starts since a 4-1 victory on Aug. 13, 2021, at Anaheim when he was with Houston. Greinke was 0-11 with a 6.32 ERA in his previous 20 road starts.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. –&nbsp;In the rubber match on Sunday afternoon at Joe Lee Griffin Field, the Samford Bulldogs defeated the Kansas Jayhawks 9-7. Michael Brooks had three hits in the game, including a home run for a second consecutive day.

The game was a back-and-forth battle with both teams leading at different points in the contest. Kansas built a four-run lead in the sixth inning after a clutch, bases-clearing double by Collier Cranford. However, the Jayhawks were unable to hold the lead and Samford scored six unanswered runs to end the game.

Samford (29-22, 12-6 Southern) started the scoring on Saturday. An RBI groundout gave the Bulldogs an early 1-0 lead after one inning.

Kansas responded with a pair of runs in the top of the second inning. The Jayhawks received back-to-back doubles from Brooks and Janson Reeder to start the inning. Both Brooks and Reeder came into score courtesy of an RBI groundout by Luke Leto and a sacrifice fly from Cole Elvis. KU held a 2-1 lead after the top of the second.

The Bulldogs got two unearned runs back in the bottom half of the second inning. The first run scored on a wild pitch to tie the game. Samford regained the lead with an RBI single by Josh Rodriguez. The hit gave Samford a 3-2 edge.

Brooks came up in the fourth inning and tied the game. Brooks, who hit a home run on Friday, hit a solo shot to left field to even the game at 3-3. The home run was the seventh of the season for Brooks.

With the game still tied in the sixth, Kansas scored four runs to take the lead. Kodey Shojinaga and Brooks each singled to setup runners on first and second with one out. Reeder collected his second hit of the day with an RBI single to left-center field. After Elvis drew a 2-out walk to load the bases, Cranford delivered his bases-clearing double down the right field line to give the Jayhawks a 7-3 advantage.

The big inning for the Jayhawks was quickly matched by the Bulldogs. Samford scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, including a 2-run homer by Kace Garner. After six innings, Kansas held a 7-6 lead.

Samford continued its surge in the bottom of the seventh. The Bulldogs score three runs in the inning, with two of them being unearned. The three runs gave them a 9-7 lead, where the game ultimately ended.

Sam Ireland started for Kansas and allowed three runs, one earned, over 3.1 innings. Gavin Brasosky followed Ireland and pitched 1.2 scoreless innings of relief. Thaniel Trumper also had 2.0 scoreless innings of relief. Hewlett suffered the loss to fall to 0-4.

⚾️ Kansas drops rubber match to Samford

Patrick Mahomes and the Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs will kick off the NFL season against the upstart Detroit Lions in a matchup of high-powered offenses and will host Jalen Hurts and the Philadelphia Eagles in a Super Bowl rematch on “Monday Night Football” in Week 11

Aaron Rodgers will make his New York Jets debut in the first Monday night game of the season against the Buffalo Bills and later faces the Miami Dolphins in the NFL's first Black Friday game on Nov. 24.

Thanks to Rodgers' arrival in the Big Apple, the Jets will have six nationally televised games, including their first Sunday night game since 2011 when they take on the Chiefs on Oct. 1. That'll be the first ever Mahomes-Rodgers matchup.

“It’s not going to be monotonous with all the 1 o’clock games we’re used to,” Jets coach Robert Saleh said on NFL Network.

Coming off their second championship in four seasons, the Chiefs will host the Lions on Sept. 7 on “Thursday Night Football.” The Lions finished 9-8 last season after a 1-6 start and knocked Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers out of the playoffs with a 20-16 victory at Lambeau Field in the final regular-season game.

Mahomes, the two-time NFL MVP, led the Chiefs to a 38-35 comeback win over the Eagles in the Super Bowl. The teams will battle at Arrowhead Stadium on Nov. 20.

Fans will get their first look at Rodgers in his new green-and-white No. 8 Jets jersey when New York hosts Josh Allen and the Bills in an AFC East matchup on Sept. 11.

The NFL released the full schedule for its 104th season on Thursday night after revealing five international games and several others earlier in the day and Wednesday.

Other highlights include a rematch of the NFC championship game in Week 13 and a rematch of the AFC title game in Week 17. Hurts and the Eagles will host the San Francisco 49ers on Dec. 3. The Chiefs will host Joe Burrow and the Cincinnati Bengals on New Year's Eve.

The Eagles knocked quarterback Brock Purdy out of the conference title game on their way to a dominant 31-7 win. Purdy had elbow surgery in the offseason, but should be ready by the time the teams meet again.

The Thanksgiving tripleheader features three division games. It begins with Jordan Love and the Green Bay Packers visiting the Lions. The Dallas Cowboys then host the Washington Commanders and the Seattle Seahawks host the 49ers in prime time.

Mahomes and the Chiefs will host AFC West rival Las Vegas in the early game of the Christmas Day tripleheader. The Eagles will host the New York Giants in one of 14 playoff rematches on the 2023 schedule. Lamar Jackson and the Ravens wrap up Christmas action in San Francisco.

The New England Patriots also announced seven-time Super Bowl champion Tom Brady will be honored at the team's home opener against the Eagles on Sept. 10. Brady, who led the Patriots to six Super Bowl titles, retired in February after spending the last three seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

On Wednesday, the NFL announced that Trevor Lawrence and the Jacksonville Jaguars will become the first NFL team to play two international games in the same season when they spend back-to-back weeks in London.

The Jaguars will host the Atlanta Falcons at Wembley Stadium on Oct. 1 and visit the Bills at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Oct. 8. The Jaguars were set to play two designated home games in London in 2020 but the pandemic canceled those plans.

The Tennessee Titans will host the Baltimore Ravens at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Oct. 15. The Chiefs will host the Dolphins in Germany at Eintracht Frankfurt Stadium on Nov. 5. The Patriots will host the Indianapolis Colts on Nov. 12, also in Frankfurt.

Bryce Young and C.J. Stroud, the first two picks in the draft, are scheduled to meet in Week 8 when the Carolina Panthers host the Houston Texans.

There will be three Monday night doubleheaders in Weeks 2, 3, and 14.

The Eagles have the toughest strength of schedule based on last year’s standings. Their opponents had a .566 winning percentage in 2022. The Falcons, who play in the lowly NFC South, have the easiest schedule with an opponents' winning percentage of .417.

The NFL’s 18-week, 272-game regular-season schedule concludes with 16 division games in Week 18, including two on Saturday Jan. 6.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. –&nbsp;Kansas hit six home runs on Friday afternoon en route to a 12-4 victory over the Samford Bulldogs at Joe Lee Griffin Field. Janson Reeder, Collier Cranford, Chase Jans, Kodey Shojinaga, Michael Brooks and Cole Elvis all hit home runs in the contest.

With the game tied at 2-2, the Jayhawks blasted three home runs in the top of the second inning. That marked the first time since 2010 that Kansas homered three times in a single inning. KU never trailed at any point in the game and improved to 23-27 on the season behind a 20-hit effort from the offense.

Kansas got started right away in the first inning on Friday. Jans doubled with one out and Reeder took an 0-2 pitch out to right field for a 2-run shot to give the Jayhawks a 2-0 lead.

Samford (28-22, 12-6 Southern) was quick to respond and tie Kansas in the bottom of the first. After the first two batters reached base on a double and single, a double play brought in a run and Lucas Steele hit a solo homer to make the game 2-2.

The Jayhawks kept swinging it in the second when Cranford hit a solo homer, Jans had a 2-run blast and Shojinaga blasted a solo shot. The four runs on three homers gave Kansas a 6-2 advantage.

The Bulldogs tightened the game in the bottom of the fourth with a 2-run homer by Josh Rodriguez. The home run made the score 6-4.

In the top of the fifth, Kansas got the two runs back. With two outs, Jake English and Cranford each delivered RBI singles. The run-scoring hits gave Kansas a four-run lead once again at 8-4.

The team stayed quiet offensively until the top of the eighth. Kansas tacked on four more runs in the inning courtesy of a pair of 2-run homers by Michael Brooks and Cole Elvis. That pushed the score to 12-4, which is where it would ultimately end.

Hunter Cashero started and allowed four runs over five innings, while striking out five and walking none. He induced two double plays in his start and earned the win to improve to 3-1 on the season. Ethan Bradford followed Cashero and pitched four scoreless innings of relief to receive his second save of the season.
