MANHATTAN, Kan. – A school-record tying nine Kansas State football seniors during the 2022 season were named members of the 2023 National Football Foundation (NFF) Hampshire Honor Society, the NFF announced Wednesday.&nbsp; 

The nine Wildcats to earn the honor were&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/football/roster/nick-allen/8502">Nick Allen</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/football/roster/drake-cheatum/9702">Drake Cheatum</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/football/roster/thomas-helten/8530">Thomas Helten</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/football/roster/robert-hentz-ii/8532">Robert Hentz II</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/football/roster/eli-huggins/8536">Eli Huggins</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/football/roster/adrian-martinez/8597">Adrian Martinez</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/football/roster/cincere-mason/8552">Cincere Mason</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/football/roster/kade-warner/8583">Kade Warner</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/football/roster/sammy-wheeler/8586">Sammy Wheeler</a>, as they were members of an elite group of 1,734 players from 328 schools across all NCAA divisions and the NAIA who qualified for membership in the Society's 17th year. The nine honorees in 2023 tied for the most in school history with those inducted into the society in 2020. "We are thrilled to honor another impressive group of athletes as part of this year's Hampshire Honor Society," said NFF President &amp; CEO Steve Hatchell. "Over the last 17 years, the Hampshire Honor Society has served as a powerful vehicle for schools to recognize their college football players who have distinguished themselves both academically and athletically, and we congratulate the schools and each of these young men for their commitment to excellence in all aspects of their lives." The Hampshire Honor Society recognizes college football players who maintained a cumulative 3.2 GPA or better throughout their college career. They must have met all NCAA/NAIA-mandated progress toward degree requirements and been starters or significant contributors throughout the 2022 season. Six of the nine Wildcats named to the Hampshire Honor Society earned First Team Academic All-Big 12 honors this past season, while Martinez was named a finalist for the NFF's William V. Campbell Trophy college football's premier scholar-athlete award that annually recognizes an individual as the absolute best in the nation for his combined academic success, football performance and exemplary leadership. Allen, Huggins and Wheeler were each four-time Academic All-Big 12 performers. K-State has led the Big 12 in Academic All-Big 12 honors since 2014 with a total of 270, which is 32 more than the next closest team.&nbsp;&nbsp;

WICHITA, Kan.&nbsp;— Wichita State athletics announced on Tuesday that head women's basketball coach Keitha Adams has resigned from her position for the same job at UTEP. Adams served as the head coach of the Shockers for the past six seasons, accumulating an overall record of 80-93.

Adams will return to El Paso as the all-time winningest coach in UTEP women's basketball history after serving as the Miners' head coach from 2001-2017 where she went 284-209.&nbsp;

“Today is a very special and unique day for me. I’m thrilled and grateful to be returning as the head women’s basketball coach at UTEP,” Adams said.  “The love I have for this University, community, and program runs deep in my soul.  I want to thank President Heather Wilson and Director of Athletics Jim Senter for this opportunity.  I’d also like to thank committee members Jeff Darby, Daniel Garcia, Julie Levesque, Charley Thrash and Taylor Vena for their support in this process.”

Adams will be re-introduced as the UTEP coach on Wednesday afternoon with a 2 p.m. press conference.

“I’m excited to meet with the players and start working towards next season.  I look forward to coaching again in the greatest basketball venue in the country, the Don Haskins Center, and making more special memories,” Adams said. “I can’t wait to get started with the team, connecting with Miner fans, and reconnecting with El Paso.”

⚾ Shockers fall at Oklahoma

WICHITA, Kan.—In front of a record-breaking crowd of 8,506 fans at Riverfront Stadium, the Wichita Wind Surge sealed its home opener against the Northwest Arkansas Naturals 3-1 on Tuesday.

The Surge scored an unanswered run in the first after Jake Rucker hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Brooks Lee. The Naturals tied it up in the fifth on a solo shot from Luca Tresh.

The Surge took the lead, 2-1 in the eighth inning, taking advantage of two Naturals errors. Brooks Lee walked and scored on a wild pitch. Pat Winkel then walked, scoring Yoyner Fajardo.

RHP pitcher Carlos Luna made his debut with the Surge Tuesday evening. He pitched 5.2 innings and struck out 10 out of 18 batters. He allowed one run and one hit.

LHP Kody Funderburk pitched 2.0 innings. He struck out three, walked one and allowed two hits. RHP Alex Scherff got the win. He pitched 1.1 innings and struck out two.

NOTES – In the Surge’s home opener, Riverfront Stadium hosted 8,506 people which is the largest crowd in stadium history. RHP Carlos Luna made his first start and debut with the Surge against the Naturals. Brooks Lee has a hit in all four games this season.

⚾ Wind Surge win home opener in front of huge crowd

MAIZE, Kan.&nbsp;— The Hutchinson Salthawks baseball team dropped two games at Maize South on Tuesday evening in Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League play. The Salthawks dropped the opener 7-6 in eight innings before losing the second game, 16-1 in four innings.

The Salthawks scored first in game one when Bradyn Rodriguez homered to left field to give Hutch a 2-0 lead. Maize South scored a single run in the second to pull within 2-1, before the Salthawks scored in the third to lead 3-1. Maize South took advantage of a Hutch error and plated three runs in the third to lead 4-3 after three.&nbsp;

Hutchinson quickly regained the lead with a three-spot of their own in the top of the fourth. The Mavericks scored two in the bottom of the sixth inning to tie the game at six. Bentley Eckhoff faced a runner at third with one out in the bottom of the seventh, and was able to escape to send the game to extras.&nbsp;

After the Salthawks failed to score in the top of the eighth, Maize South came to bat. The Mavericks loaded the bases with one out and the game-winning run 90-feet away. Payton Akers proved to be the hero for the Mavericks, as he laid down a perfectly placed suicide squeeze bunt down the first base line to give Maize South the 7-6 win.

The Salthawks scored first again in game two with a single run in the top of the first, but the Maize South offense exploded for five runs in each of the first two innings, two in the third and four in the fourth to win the game via the run-rule. The Mavericks outhit the Salthawks 13-2, while Hutchinson committed four more errors defensively.

The Salthawks return to Hobart-Detter Field on Friday when they will host the Campus Colts. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. and can be watched and heard on Hutch Post, as well as the NFHS Network.

KANSAS CITY, Kan. –&nbsp;Kansas has now won eight of its last nine games as the Jayhawks defeated the Texas Southern Tigers in the second annual Buck O’Neil Classic at Legends Field&nbsp;on Tuesday night by a final score of 8-5. Kansas has won both years of the Buck O’Neil Classic.

Kansas (16-15, 5-4 Big 12) hit three home runs on Tuesday evening in a night that honored Buck O’Neil and Negro League baseball. Sophomore Chase Jans, freshman Kodey Shojinaga and redshirt sophomore Jackson Cobb each homered in the contest. The home run was the first of Cobb’s career.

The Jayhawks would get on the board first, as Shojinaga blasted a solo home run over the left-field wall for his fourth home run of the season. Kansas would tack on another run on a fielding error&nbsp;and added one more in the second on a sacrifice fly by redshirt sophomore Michael Brooks to bring in sophomore Luke Leto and extend the Jayhawks’ lead to 3-0.

Texas Southern (21-13, 7-5 SWAC) would scratch two runs across on a fielding error in the fourth inning to cut the Kansas lead to 3-2.

That's according to a person with knowledge of the decision who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because a deal was still being finalized. An announcement is expected by the conference by the end of the week. Petitti replaces Kevin Warren, who is leaving to become president of the Chicago Bears. Petitti continues a trend of recent hires to lead the top conferences coming from outside college sports — like Warren, who came from the Minnesota Vikings in 2019.

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Jonah Heim was behind the plate as Jacob deGrom had nine strikeouts to break another Texas record that had been held by Hall of Famer Nolan Ryan. The catcher then hit the no-doubt homer to end the game after the Rangers had blown the lead following the exit of their new ace.

Heim hit a three-run shot in the 10th inning for the Rangers in their 8-5 win over the Kansas City Royals on Tuesday night. The 403-foot, three-run shot to right off Scott Barlow (0-1) came after Josh Jung’s two-out walk that followed a tying RBI single by Adolis Garcia.

“That was a good one. Just sometimes you just kind of know,” Heim said of his third career walk-off homer — the other two came in back-to-back games in 2021. “We don’t get there unless Adolis and Jung do their job. That’s a great team win right there.”

Texas shortstop Corey Seager left the game in the middle of the fifth inning with left hamstring tightness. Seager was running between first and second base after hitting an opposite-field double into the left-field corner. He appeared to make the turn around first base cleanly, but then pulled up after a few steps and gingerly went to second base.

Seager wasn't in the clubhouse when it was opened to reporters after the game. Manager Bruce Bochy said he had spoken only briefly to the shortstop, who will be revaluated Wednesday.

Michael Massey had a sac fly for the Royals in the 10th after they had scored single runs in the eighth and ninth to force extra innings.

Cole Ragans (2-0) retired the only two batters he faced, the first being Massey on the sacrifice fly.

While deGrom ended up with a no-decision, the nine Ks pushed his season total to 27 and set a new mark for a Rangers pitcher in his first three appearances — that had been Ryan's 26 after he joined the team in 1989. It came a night after Andrew Heaney, like deGrom new to the Texas rotation this season, had nine consecutive strikeouts to tie an American League record and surpass Ryan's single-game club record of seven in a row in 1991.

“He has such great stuff,” Bochy said. “I enjoy watching Jacob when he pitches.”

DeGrom left with a 4-2 lead in his third start for Texas — all at home since signing his $185 million, five-year contract in free agency last December. The two-time National League Cy Young Award winner didn't have a walk while throwing 68 of his 98 pitches for strikes over seven innings, and three innings later his catcher ended it at the plate.

“That’s big, picking each other up and playing good baseball,” deGrom said. “So definitely exciting. Huge for Jonah there to come up and hit that walk-off homer. ... He did a great job behind the plate. We were on the same page the whole time."

Seager, in the second year of a $325 million, 10-year contract with the Rangers, is hitting .359 after going 2 for 2 with a walk against the Royals.

It was the fifth game in a row for Seager to have an extra-base hit. But after touching second base, he bent down and then almost immediately started going back toward the dugout even before a team trainer got all the way out to check on him.

“Gosh, he’s been swinging the bat so well," Bochy said. “You hate to see it because he’s been on fire. I mean he’s just squaring up everything.”

Rangers: CF Leody Taveras, who started the season on the IL with a left oblique strain, was 2 for 4 with a grand slam and a bases-loaded walk Tuesday after his rehab assignment was moved from Double-A Frisco to Triple-A Round Rock. He went 1 for 10 in three games for Frisco.

Royals RHP Brad Keller (1-1, 2.61 ERA) has the longest active streak of consecutive starts getting a decision — going 6-11 over 17 starts since last May 21. He is still short of Tim Belcher's team record of 21 consecutive starts with a decision that ended in June 1997. Nathan Eovaldi (1-1, 4.22) makes his third start for Texas in the series finale Wednesday night.

LAWRENCE, Kan. –&nbsp;The Kansas Jayhawks are one of eight teams among an impressive field that will compete in the inaugural Cayman Islands Classic women’s college basketball tournament, which will be held on Nov. 24-25 in Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands.

The tournament field includes 2023 national champion LSU, Final Four participant Virginia Tech, along with UConn and UCLA, who both finished the season ranked in the top 15. Kansas joins Niagara, Tulane and Virginia in rounding out the field.

Kansas will play two pre-determined opponents in the Cayman Islands, with matchups to be announced later. The 2023 tournament is the first women’s edition of the Cayman Islands Classic, which will be played at John Gray Gymnasium, just minutes away from the world famous Seven Mile Beach.

The Jayhawks are set to return all five starters from its 2023 WNIT Championship team, which finished 25-11 after defeating Western Kentucky, Missouri, Nebraska, Arkansas, Washington and Columbia to win the WNIT. All-Big 12 selections Zakiyah Franklin, Taiyanna Jackson and Holly Kersgieter have each announced their intention to exercise the option for an extra year of eligibility, as granted by the NCAA for student-athletes in response to the impact COVID-19 had on college athletics during the 2020-21 season.

Jackson was a unanimous All-Big 12 First Team and All-Big 12 Defensive Team selection in 2022-23, while Franklin earned also All-Big 12 First Team honors. Kersgieter received All-Big 12 Honorable Mention, her third All-Big 12 selection as a Jayhawk. Kansas also welcomes back Wyvette Mayberry and Chandler Prater, who combined to start 64 games last season, while adding one of the highest-rated recruits in program history in five-star prospect S’Mya Nichols of Overland Park, Kansas.

🏀 WBB: Jayhawks to appear in inaugural Cayman Islands Classic

WICHITA, Kan.&nbsp;— Wichita State head men's basketball coach Paul Mills has been quite busy in his first month in Wichita. Mills announced the <a href="https://hutchpost.com/posts/019ee458-fb0f-47a6-a018-cfba046153c6">completion of his coaching staff on Monday</a>, and now has added his first transfer into the program.

Jacob Germany is a 6-foot-11 center transfer from UTSA, and has one season of eligibility remaining. Germany took a visit to Wichita State over this past weekend.

Germany has compiled 1,261 points, 760 rebounds and 83 starts in a four-year span at UTSA. He averaged 12.3 points and 8.3 rebounds this past season for the Roadrunners.

⚾ Wildcats blank Creighton

MAIZE, Kan.&nbsp;— The Hutchinson Salthawks baseball team will travel to Maize South on Tuesday, April 11th to take on the Mavericks. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 4 p.m.

The Salthawks are off to an 0-4 start following two home losses at home last Wednesday to Newton, while the Mavericks are 2-4 on the season and come in to today's games after spliting home and away games with Maize last Thursday and Friday.&nbsp;

⚾🎙 LISTEN: Salthawks travel to Maize South

CLEARWATER, Kan. — Buhler varsity baseball coach John Neill won his 200th game as part of a doubleheader sweep by the Crusaders over Clearwater Monday night.

Neill won his and Buhler's only state baseball title back in 2016. They were runner up to Nickerson in 2019.

DENVER (AP) — Germán Márquez pitched five strong innings before leaving with right forearm tightness, Alan Trejo tied a career-high with three hits and the Colorado Rockies beat the St. Louis Cardinals 7-4. Márquez was warming up for the sixth inning when he began rubbing his forearm as manager Bud Black and the trainers gathered around him. He allowed two runs and struck out four. The hard-throwing righty now has 979 career strikeouts. He's six away from tying Jorge De La Rosa’s mark for most K’s in Rockies history. Jordan Walker singled in the seventh to extend his hitting streak to 10 games. It’s the longest by a rookie to start their career in Cardinals history.

The 1987 Brewers and 1982 Atlanta Braves share the major league record for the best start to a season at 13-0. This was the Rays’ first win by fewer than four runs. Five Tampa Bay pitchers combined on a three-hitter.

NEW YORK (AP) — The major league batting average rose 16 points to .249 over the first 1 1/2 weeks of this season with new shift limits in place, while game time dropped 31 minutes to 2:38 in the first year of the pitch clock. The time is on track to be the lowest since 2:35 in 1984. There were 125 pitch clock violations, an average of 0.89 per game. Two-thirds of the penalties have been imposed on pitchers. Stolen bases were up 30% to 1.3 per game in the first year of larger bases.

MIAMI (AP) — Getting to the play-in tournament probably wasn’t the goal of any team when training camps opened back in September. But it beats the alternative. There are 12 teams with playoff spots right now, 10 teams whose seasons are over and eight teams with a second chance. The play-in tournament starts Tuesday, with Atlanta going to Miami and Minnesota visiting the Los Angeles Lakers. The winners of those games will be going to the postseason. Oklahoma City goes to New Orleans and Chicago visits Toronto on Wednesday for elimination games. The winners there move on to face the loser of Tuesday’s games in another win-or-go-home contest.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The Minnesota Timberwolves have suspended center Rudy Gobert for their play-in game against the Los Angeles Lakers. The 10-year veteran threw a punch at teammate Kyle Anderson in an argument in the huddle during a timeout. Gobert took a swing at Anderson and hit him in the upper chest in the second quarter of Minnesota’s game Sunday against New Orleans. If the Timberwolves beat the Lakers they’ll get the No. 7 seed and face Memphis in the first round. If they lose, they’ll host the New Orleans-Oklahoma City winner for the No. 8 seed and a first-round date with Denver.

PARIS (AP) — A costly and complex clean-up is resuscitating the River Seine just in time for it to play a starring role in the 2024 Paris Olympics. The city and its region are rushing to make the Seine's murky waters swimmable, so it can genuinely live up to its billing as the world’s most romantic river, one that’s actually fit again for people. In a warming world, the renewed ability to take cooling dips in the river could help France’s capital remain bearable during increasingly frequent heatwaves. LAWRENCE, Kan. –&nbsp;Kansas senior Cole Elvis was named Big 12 Newcomer of the Week, the conference office announced Monday. Elvis is the first Jayhawk to win a weekly award this season.

Elvis slashed .353/.476/.882 (6-for-17) with three home runs, six RBIs, four runs and four walks in four games last week. He hit a home run in each of the three games at West Virginia, marking the first time in his career he has homered in three consecutive games. All three home runs were hit to the opposite field (right field twice, right-center once). He posted a 1.167 slugging percentage in the three games at West Virginia.

The Vacaville, California, native and transfer from Cal has a home run in each of the last five conference games. He is hitting .389/.463/.917 (14-for-36) with four doubles, five home runs, 14 RBIs, 11 runs and five walks in nine Big 12 games this season. He also has multiple hits in four of the last six conference games.

Elvis is the only Kansas player to start every game this season and Coach Dan Fitzgerald has repeatedly called him the best leader he’s ever coached. He helped lead Kansas to a seven-game winning streak and back-to-back Big 12 series wins for the first time since the 2017 season. Elvis is currently riding a seven-game hitting streak during which his average has jumped from .253 to .298.

Elvis is the first Kansas player to win Big 12 Newcomer of the Week since Caleb Upshaw on May 2, 2022. He is the 14th player in Kansas history to win the honor.

Kansas (15-15, 5-4 Big 12) is off to its best start in conference play since 2014. The Jayhawks have won seven of their last eight games and play nine of the next 10 games at Hoglund Ballpark, where Kansas is 6-0 this season. The only game not at Hoglund Ballpark is on Tuesday night at Legends Field when Kansas hosts Texas Southern in the Buck O’Neil Classic at 6 p.m. CT.

Heaney matched a record shared by Detroit reliever Tyler Alexander against Cincinnati on Aug. 2, 2020, and Detroit reliever Doug Fister against Kansas City on Sept. 27, 2012.

The major league record for consecutive strikeouts is 10, set by the New York Mets’ Tom Seaver on April 22, 1970, and matched by the Philadelphia Phillies’ Aaron Nola on June 25, 2021, and the Milwaukee Brewers’ Corbin Burnes on Aug. 11, 2021.

“He’s got an interesting delivery,” said first-year Royals manager Matt Quatraro, who returned to action after missing the team’s previous five games with COVID-19. “Low slot, carry guy, so the ball had that rising appearance to it, and it’s tough to lay off. He did a good job, to his credit, pitching at the top of the zone or just above.”

Garcia’s slam capped a seven-run sixth inning and snapped his 0-for-16 slump.

Corey Seager and Jonah Heim also homered off Royals right-hander Zack Greinke (0-3). Greinke gave up four runs, three earned, in five innings.

Hunter Dozier homered for Kansas City in the seventh inning.

Seager had three hits, two off Grienke. Seager is 10 for 24 with four homers off the 2009 AL Cy Young winner.

Major League Baseball has new rules this season that limit the use of position players as pitchers. But Kansas City qualified in the eighth inning, and Quatroro sent right fielder Nate Eaton to the mound for his first pitching appearance since he was VMI’s closer in 2018.

WICHITA, Kan. --&nbsp;Kenton Paulino, Chris Hollender and Quincy Acy will be the assistants on Paul Mills' inaugural Wichita State coaching staff, Mills formally announced. Mills, who was recently hired as WSU's 27th&nbsp;head men's basketball coach, will introduce additional members of his support staff in the coming days. The 2023 national coach of the year finalist has spent the past six years transforming the program at Oral Roberts, highlighted by a trip to the 2021 Sweet 16 and this year's undefeated run to the Summit League's regular season and tournament titles. KENTON PAULINO Paulino has served the past two seasons under Mills at ORU and now follows him to Wichita State where he'll take on the new title of Associate Head Coach. The former Texas Longhorn guard got his coaching start as a special assistant under Rick Barnes (2008-11) and has since worked under two of his other former UT mentors in Rodney Terry (2012-17 at Fresno State and 2019-21 at UTEP) and Frank Haith (2017-19 at Tulsa). He also spent a year with Pat Knight at Lamar (2011-12). Originally from Los Angeles, Paulino helped the Longhorns to four NCAA tournaments during his playing days, including a Final Four (2003), an Elite Eight (2006) and a Sweet 16 (2004). The consummate team player, he was named to Sports Illustrated's "All-Glue" team as a senior. Mills on Paulino:&nbsp;"KP has done phenomenal work at every stop. The Hutchinson Community College softball team is now No. 17 in the NJCAA Division I softball rankings.

Last week, the Blue Dragons were ranked 15th heading into a top-20 matchup last Wednesday in El Dorado against the Butler Grizzlies, who stayed ranked 16th. The Blue Dragons took game one 7-2 while the Grizzlies won game two 9-1 in six innings. The Grizzlies, one doubleheader ahead of the Blue Dragons, are 19-3 in the league, 28-8 overall. The Blue Dragons are 29-6 overall, 17-3 in the Jayhawk Conference.

The top five spots in the rankings did not change – No. 1 being Florida SouthWestern, Grayson at No. 2, Northwest Florida State at No. 3, Odessa fourth, and Walters State No. 5. Hutchinson and Butler remain the only teams in the Jayhawk Conference ranked in the national poll.

After a four-doubleheader road trip, the Blue Dragons return to the Fun Valley Sports Complex Wednesday in a doubleheader against the Barton Cougars, first pitch of game one at 3 p.m.

The right-hander had a string of seven consecutive strikeouts from the fifth through the seventh, the longest recorded stretch of consecutive strikeouts in the Shocker record book. His biggest pitches came when Houston loaded the bases with one out in the fifth; Candiotti responded by fanning the three and four-hole hitters for the Cougars to escape the threat.

All told, Candiotti (4-2) allowed just three hits and two walks to go along with his 11 strikeouts. 🥎 Aguilar, McKinney Sweep AAC weekly honors

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Monarchs have a new coach. 

Casey Lippoldt will be taking the reins for the team's 15th year.  Casey has been coaching since 2009, where he started with the American Legion in Pratt, KS. and was a student assistant coach at Emporia state University. 

 He has coached at El Dorado, KS high school &amp; with the Derby Twins.  He played his final two summers of collegiate baseball with the Hutchinson Monarchs.  Casey &amp; his wife Tiffany have two sons.  

The new assistant coach is Ryan Pinkall.   He is a Kansas native, originally from Pratt.  Ryan played at Friends University, graduating with a Bachelor of Science.  He also played and coached with Casey Lippoldt in the American Legion League.   Ryan currently is a Biology instructor at Hutchinson Community College.  He also officiates football for the MIAA.  </figure>HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Monarchs have a new coach. Casey Lippoldt will be taking the reins for the team's 15th year. Casey has been coaching since 2009, where he started with the American Legion in Pratt, KS. and was a student assistant coach at Emporia state University. He has coached at El Dorado, KS high school &amp; with the Derby Twins. He played his final two summers of collegiate baseball with the Hutchinson Monarchs. Casey &amp; his wife Tiffany have two sons. The new assistant coach is Ryan Pinkall. He is a Kansas native, originally from Pratt. Ryan played at Friends University, graduating with a Bachelor of Science. He also played and coached with Casey Lippoldt in the American Legion League. Ryan currently is a Biology instructor at Hutchinson Community College. He also officiates football for the MIAA. Ryan is looking forward to a great first season and getting back on the field with Casey. MORGANTOWN, W.Va. –&nbsp;On Easter Sunday, Kansas dropped the series finale to No. 19-ranked West Virginia, 12-3, at Monongalia County Ballpark. Despite the defeat, Kansas secured the series win on Saturday and has won back-to-back Big 12 series for the first time since the 2017 season (vs. Oklahoma State/at #19 Oklahoma).

The series win is the first over a ranked opponent for the Jayhawks since sweeping No. 20 St. John’s in 2018 and the first on the road since taking two of three against No. 19 Oklahoma in Norman in 2017.

Kansas (15-15, 5-4 Big 12) took an early lead on Sunday with a first inning run. The game started with back-to-back errors by the Mountaineers. Then, senior Cole Elvis smashed an infield single to shortstop to score freshman Jackson Kline and give Kansas a 1-0 lead.

West Virginia (23-9, 3-3 Big 12) had its first five batters reach base in the first inning. A leadoff single followed by back-to-back hit by pitches and consecutive bases-loaded walks made it 2-1 in favor of West Virginia. An RBI single, bases-loaded hit by pitch and RBI fielder’s choice pushed the West Virginia lead to 5-1 after one inning. The five runs scored on two hits, two walks and three hit by pitches.

Elvis continued his big series by blasting his third home run of the weekend, a solo shot in the third inning. The homer by Elvis was his seventh of the season and cut the deficit to 5-2.

The Mountaineers added two runs in the fourth, one run in the sixth and one run in the seventh to stretch their lead to 9-2. Two of those runs were on solo home runs off the bat of Landon Wallace.

In the eighth inning, junior Janson Reeder hit a solo home run down the right field line. The homer was his eighth of the season and his second in as many days after homering on Saturday. That made the score 9-3 and was all the Jayhawks would get the rest of the day. The Mountaineers added three more runs in the bottom of the eighth to end the scoring at 12-3.
