DERBY, Kan.&nbsp;— The Hutchinson Monarchs collected 12 hits in an 8-4 win against the Derby Twins on Sunday evening to win the series, 2-1. The game was moved from Hutchinson to Derby following unplayable field conditions at Hobart-Detter after Saturday nights storms.

Former HutchCC Blue Dragon Will Edmunson went 4-for-5 at the plate with a home run and a double. Cooper Harris went 2-for-5 with a double and a couple of RBI. Caleb Cotton and Brett Black also collected doubles for the Monarchs in the win.

Brady Beverman got the start on the mound and went five innings, allowing two hits. Noah Kelley picked up his third win of the summer, going three innings of relief. Carson Cornelius tossed a scoreless ninth inning of relief, striking out two.

The Monarchs are now 4-5 on the season and will be on the road in Augusta this evening to face the Kansas Cannons (8-2). First pitch from Wheeler Stadium in Augusta is scheduled for 7 p.m. The two teams will play at Hobart-Detter Field in Hutch on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

MIDLAND, TX – The Wichita Wind Surge bullpen dealt six shutout innings and the Surge offense scored four fifth inning runs to come from behind and defeat Midland 5-3 on a hot Sunday afternoon. The Wind Surge take four of six in the series and win their first series in a month.

DaShawn Keirsey opened the game with a triple and scored on a Seth Gray RBI double in the first inning. Midland answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning. A pair of home runs from the RockHounds.

Travis Adams got the start and allowed three runs on three hits in three innings. The Surge used five relievers with newcomer Taylor Floyd earning the win. Jordan Brink closed it out with his fourth save pitching a perfect ninth inning.

David Banuelos hammered a fifth inning home run 433 feet over the centerfield wall to chase Midland starter Ryan Cusick from the game. The Surge sent eight hitters to the plate the inning and Gray and Aaron Sabato each drove in runs.

Wichita 27-35 on the season finishes the trip 6-6 and returns home after a 12-game, 14 day road-trip.

KANSAS CITY, Mo (AP) — Shohei Ohtani and Mike Trout hit back-to-back home runs to help the Los Angeles Angels defeat the Kansas City Royals 5-2 on Sunday in the finale of a three-game series.

It's the sixth time this season, and 28th overall, that Ohtani and Trout have homered in the same game. The Angels are 6-0 this season and 20-8 overall when both players go deep.

“When I write Mike Trout in the lineup I feel pretty good about it, as any other manager in the league would,” Los Angeles manager Phil Nevin said. “You can't win games with just two guys, but if there are any guys back-to-back you can do it, it's those two. They can carry a team for quite a while.”

"They’ve certainly done that to a lot of pitchers over the years,” he said of LA's dynamic duo.

Ohtani saw the end of a six-game streak in which he recorded an extra-base hit, a walk and a run. The only other players in MLB history to accomplish that were Babe Ruth (seven times) and Barry Bonds (six).

The Royals fell to 3-19-1 in series in 2023. They have not won a series since May 15-17 in San Diego.

Tyler Anderson (4-1) surrendered two runs on six hits in five innings to earn the win. Carlos Estevez notched his 19th save in 19 tries.

“I felt like I threw mostly good pitches,” Anderson said. “Overall, I felt like I gave us a chance.”

Zack Greinke (1-7) allowed four runs on eight hits in five innings.

A day after blowing an 8-2 lead in the seventh inning, the Angels were thankful to walk out with a series victory.

“To come in here off that big series in Texas and losing a tough one last night, then come in here and turn the page was big,” Trout said.

The Royals got on the board in the second. Maikel Garcia legged out a double leading off. Samad Taylor sacrificed him to third and he scored on a single by Freddy Fermin.

The Angels tied it in the fourth but could have had more than one run. Trout led off with a double and scored on a single by Brandon Drury. Hunter Renfroe followed with a single and Los Angeles had runners on first and second with no outs. Greinke struck out Chad Wallach, then got Michael Stefanic to fly to deep right, advancing both runners. Luis Rengifo was hit by a pitch. Andrew Velazquez hit a sharp ground ball that struck Rengifo to end the inning.

The Royals regained the lead in the bottom of the fourth. Garcia led off with a single and stole second. Taylor lined a single up the middle to score Garcia.

“It's cool walking into the dugout and Shohei handing me the (home run) hat,” Trout said. “What Shohei has been doing the last couple of weeks is unbelievable, but we've got guys stepping up and it's fun to be a part of.”

Jared Walsh led off the ninth with a solo home run.

Royals RHP Brad Keller threw a bullpen session on Sunday. Keller has been on the injured list since May 19 with right shoulder impingement. He is expected to go to Arizona for rehabilitation before an official rehab assignment with Triple-A Omaha.

The Royals selected the contract of RHP Brooks Kriske from Triple-A Omaha. Kriske had five saves in 25 appearances, recording 47 strikeouts in 27 innings in Omaha. ⚾️ Ohtani, Trout homer to lead Angels past Royals 5-2

WICHITA, Kan. — The Wichita Wizards (8-3) finished the regular season Sunday with a 121-85 blowout of the Tri-State 66ers (5-4).

The victory came less than 20 hours after a stunning loss to Program Select Missouri in Springfield, Missouri, Saturday night 126-115.

The Wizards arrived back in Wichita less than 12 hours before the Father's Day/Fan Appreciation Day tip at the Garvey Center on the Friends University campus.&nbsp;

Jeremiah May scored 16 points in the first half and finished with 25. He snagged seven rebounds.&nbsp;

Parker Austin (23.3 ppg) and Kaelon Gary (21.6 ppg), Wichita's No. 1 and No. 2 leading scorers, respectively, saw limited playing time as the Wizards captured a 60-37 halftime lead.

Austin scored all eight of his points in the first half as Gary dropped all seven of his in the second half.&nbsp;

Roc Lee dropped 13 points in the first half, but was held to four in the second half for the 66ers.

Terrance Reese scored 27 for Tri-State to lead all scorers.&nbsp;

Jalen McClish started for Gary (coach's decision) and scored 14.

D.J. Jones supplied 13 points off the bench for Wichita.

The Wizards play the OKC Servants in Oklahoma City June 24 for the inaugural Mid-America Basketball Association (MABA) championship.

The Wizards shot 41% from the floor despite going 8 of 47 from deep (17%).

The 66ers hit 14 trays and finished 34% from the field.&nbsp;

🏀 May has career-day against 66ers

MORGANTOWN (AP) —West Virginia basketball coach Bob Huggins has resigned a day after his arrest on suspicion of drunken driving in the latest incident in a Hall of Fame career that imploded quickly.

The university announced the resignation Saturday night. It came a month after the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/huggins-homophobic-slur-west-virginia-xavier-77ce70b41112a0062421ad9405558473">university suspended him for three games</a>&nbsp;for using an anti-gay slur while also denigrating Catholics during a radio interview.

The 69-year-old Huggins leaves as the third-winningest coach all-time in Division I with 935 career victories, behind only Mike Krzyzewski of Duke (1,202) and Jim Boeheim of Syracuse (1,015), both of whom are retired. Unlike the others, Huggins had no national titles, taking Cincinnati to the Final Four in 1992 and West Virginia in 2010.

Huggins had 16-year stints each with the Bearcats and Mountaineers. Both ended in the aftermath of arrests for drinking and driving.

Huggins was charged with driving under the influence on Friday night after his SUV had stopped in the middle of traffic in Pittsburgh with a shredded tire and the driver’s side door was open at about 8:30 p.m. According to a criminal complaint, a breath test determined Huggins’ blood alcohol content was more than twice the legal limit.

Huggins was charged with driving under the influence, released from custody and will appear at a later date for a preliminary hearing, according to a police report.

In a statement to the West Virginia community on Saturday night, Huggins said: “Today, I have submitted a letter to President Gordon Gee and Vice President and Director of Athletics Wren Baker informing them of my resignation and intention to retire as head men’s basketball coach at West Virginia University effective immediately.”

In a separate statement Saturday night, West Virginia’s athletic department said it accepted the resignation “in light of recent events.

“We support his decision so that he can focus on his health and family. On behalf of West Virginia University, we share our appreciation for his service to our University, our community and our state."

No replacement was immediately named for Huggins. The athletic department statement said that “in the days ahead, we will focus on supporting the student-athletes in our men’s basketball program and solidifying leadership for our program.”

Huggins said his recent actions do not represent the university's values or the leadership expected in his role as coach.

“While I have always tried to represent our University with honor, I have let all of you — and myself — down,” he said. “I am solely responsible for my conduct and sincerely apologize to the University community — particularly to the student-athletes, coaches and staff in our program. I must do better, and I plan to spend the next few months focused on my health and my family so that I can be the person they deserve.”

Huggins added that it was “the honor of my professional career” to lead the team at his alma mater. Born in Morgantown, he said it “will always be my home, and I will always be a Mountaineer. Thank you to everyone who has supported our program over the years. It has meant more to me and my family than you could ever know.”

Friday night, officers directed Huggins to move off the road so they could help with the tire, then activated their lights when they observed Huggins having trouble maneuvering the SUV to allow vehicles to pass. Upon questioning, officers suspected he was intoxicated and asked him to exit the vehicle. The report said he failed standard field sobriety tests, was taken into custody without incident and transported for further testing.

It was Huggins’ second such arrest. The other occurred in 2004, when he was the head coach at Cincinnati.

In June 2004, Huggins pleaded no contest to driving under the influence in a suburb of Cincinnati and was ordered to attend a three-day intervention program. The University of Cincinnati suspended him indefinitely with pay and told Huggins to rehabilitate himself.

Huggins was allowed to return to work two months later, saying that “I made a terrible mistake, and what bothers me most is I hurt other people. All I can do is work like crazy to be a better person, a better coach, be better at everything I do and make those people proud of me.”

By 2005, Huggins' Cincinnati career was over; he was fired amid a power struggle with the school’s president as well as the aftermath of the 2004 arrest.

After spending one season at Kansas State, Huggins took his dream job at West Virginia, his alma mater, in 2007.

Last month, Huggins agreed to a three-game suspension, a $1 million salary reduction and sensitivity training for&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/huggins-homophobic-slur-west-virginia-665dd3d31760b1c6f66d7d706e825727">using the slur</a>&nbsp;during an interview with Cincinnati radio station WLW. Huggins was asked about the transfer portal and whether he had a chance of landing a player at West Virginia from Xavier, a Jesuit school.

“Catholics don’t do that,” Huggins said. “I tell you what, any school that can throw rubber penises on the floor and then say they didn’t do it, by God they can get away with anything.

“It was the Crosstown Shootout. What it was, was all those (expletive), those Catholic (expletive), I think.”

Huggins’ salary of $4.15 million had been reduced by $1 million after the slur. That reduction was to be used to directly support WVU’s LGBTQ+ Center, as well as a mental health center at the university and other groups that support marginalized communities. At the time, he was suspended for the first three games of the 2023-24 season. In addition, his contract was amended from a multiyear agreement to a year-by-year agreement that began on May 10.

Huggins entered the Basketball Hall of Fame last September. In 41 seasons, his teams have gone to 25 NCAA Tournaments, finished ranked in the top 10 of The Associated Press poll seven times and finished under .500 five times. The Mountaineers have 11 NCAA Tournament appearances under Huggins.

Huggins had assembled a solid group from the transfer portal for next season, including Syracuse center Jesse Edwards, Arizona guard Kerr Kriisa, Manhattan guards Jose Perez and Omar Silverio, and Montana State guard RaeQuan Battle.

Unlike the others, Huggins had no national titles, taking Cincinnati to the Final Four in 1992 and West Virginia in 2010.Huggins had 16-year stints each with the Bearcats and Mountaineers. MIDLAND, TX - The Midland RockHounds scored a pair of runs in the sixth and eighth inning to pull away and defeat Wichita 7-4.

The Wind Surge took an early lead in the top of the first inning. Patrick Winkel hit a solo home run over the left center field wall.

Gregg Deichmann answered for the RockHounds when he hit a line drive home run out of right field. Shane McGuire then hit an RBI single to left field and gave Midland the lead.

In the bottom of the third starting Wind Surge pitcher Carlos Luna gave up his second home run of the game when Lawrence Butler hit a solo home run over the right field wall.

The Surge tied it back up in the top of the fifth. DaShawn Keirsey Jr. crushed a 440-foot home run deep over the center field wall.

Midland took the lead back for the final lead change of the game when Deichmann hit his second home run of the game and fourth home run of the series. Lazaro Armenteros extended the lead for Midland with an RBI single.

The RockHounds added on another two unearned runs in the bottom of the eighth.

Starting pitcher Luna for Wichita pitched five innings, gave up three runs on five hits and struck out eight batters. KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Samad Taylor hit a walk-off single in his MLB debut and the Kansas City Royals beat the Los Angeles Angels 10-9 on Saturday to snap a 10-game losing streak.

“God put me in the right position and I came through,” Taylor said. “They were throwing a lot of breaking balls early. I may have seen four fastballs all day. So I went in there sitting breaking ball. He hung a change-up and I put a good swing on it and we won the game.”

Aroldis Chapman (2-2) earned the win in relief. Chris Devenski (3-1) took the loss.

Taylor’s hit was not his only impressive plate appearance. He also collected two walks as the Royals climbed back from an 8-2 deficit entering the bottom of the seventh.

“It was impressive for a lot of reasons,” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. “The emotions he was able to keep under control, with a couple of walks in big spots. For him to be able to keep it under control is tremendous.

“It showed patience, but also controlling (himself). I can only imagine the feeling and excitement.”

Los Angeles wasted a strong start by Griffin Canning, who allowed two runs on three hits in six innings.

Brandon Drury hit two home runs and drove in three runs, and Shohei Ohtani hit his MLB-leading 23rd home run to help Los Angeles build a lead.

Kansas City scored three runs in the seventh off Kolton Ingram, who was also making his big league debut. He allowed two hits and two walks in a third of an inning. The Royals got three more off Jose Soriano in the eighth. Nick Pratto had an RBI single. Bobby Witt Jr. drove in two with a single.

The Royals went 6 for 10 with runners in scoring position — all from the seventh inning on — going 10 for 69 with runners in scoring position during the 10-game losing streak.

Tied at 8 in the ninth, Mike Trout hit a single to drive in Andrew Velazquez, who led off the inning with a walk before stealing second and third.

But the Royals answered as Edward Olivares led off with a single. Pinch-runner Dairon Blanco stole second and went to third on a throwing error.&nbsp;

Blanco scored on a single by Maikel Garcia. Garcia stole second and went to third on a bunt by Nicky Lopez. And then Taylor launched one over the head of Trout in center to win the game.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Brandon Drury drove in two runs, Patrick Sandoval threw seven innings and the Los Angeles Angels handed Kansas City its 10th straight loss, beating the Royals 3-0 on Friday night.

Kansas City, a big league-worst 18-51, is on its longest losing streak since dropping 11 games in a row from May 2-13, 2021. The Royals were held to four hits or fewer for the 15th time and shut out for the ninth.

Los Angeles has won 10 of 12. The Angels took two of three at home from Seattle before winning three of four at AL West-leading Texas.

“It probably wasn't our best game offensively and we made some mistakes on the bases, but overall I thought Sandy was great,” Angels manager Phil Nevin said. "Where we came from the last two series, you could have a letdown game. I thought we answered well.”

Sandoval (4-6) didn't retire the Royals in order until he struck out the side in the seventh. He gave four hits, four walks and hit a batter, and had six strikeouts.

“I could do without the four walks,” Sandoval said. “I was satisfied to go seven, give our bullpen a rest and give us a chance to win.

"I had to find a way to get outs and get our team back in the dugout.”

Sam Bachman retired six straight batters his first professional save.

Royals starter Brady Singer (4-6) allowed two runs and eight hits in 5 1/3 innings.

"He settled in really well," Royals manager Matt Quatraro said about Singer. "A little unfortunate there in the sixth, kind of broke his rhythm a bit, but overall he threw the ball well. Five and a third, two runs against that lineup is pretty solid.”

Shohei Ohtani laced a double down the left-field line in the first and went to third on a wild pitch. After Mike Trout walked, Drury singled to score Ohtani and send Trout to third. The Royals avoided further trouble when Singer struck out Matt Thaiss, and Drury was caught stealing.

Drury extended the lead in the sixth with an RBI double. Trout led off with a single. Drury followed with a line drive down the left-field line. Hunter Renfroe singled, ending Singer's night.

The Angels added a run in the seventh when Jose Cuas hit his first batter and walked Thaiss with the bases loaded.

Angels: 3B Anthony Rendon was held out of the because of soreness in his left wrist. He was hit by a pitch in the first inning Thursday in Texas. Though he stayed in the game, he did not swing. X-Rays were negative and he's listed as day-to-day.

Royals: C Salvador Perez was not in the lineup after being hit by a pitch in the left hand Wednesday. X-Rays were negative and manager Matt Quatraro said Perez is likely to be back soon.

Angels: INF Michael Stefanic was recalled from Triple-A Salt Lake. In a corresponding move, 1B Gio Urshela was placed on the 10-day injured list because of a left pelvis fracture. Urschela had missed the prior four games with back soreness but he fell down awkwardly Thursday at Texas. He was on crutches after the game and X-rays revealed the fracture.

Royals: IF/OF Samad Taylor was recalled from Triple-A Omaha. Taylor will make his major league debut when appears for the Royals. He was a travel-ball teammate of Royals 1B/OF Nick Pratto and Angels OF Mickey Moniak in southern California.

Rodden was selected Third Team second baseman and Tolle was chosen as Second Team utility player. This is the second All-American honor for Rodden (Third Team by Collegiate Baseball) and the third&nbsp;honor for Tolle (Second Team by&nbsp;NCBWA, Third Team by Perfect Game). Rodden authored a spectacular 2023 season as Wichita State's everyday second baseman, slashing .371/.474/.701 to lead the conference in both on-base percentage and slugging percentage. The switch-hitter hammered 18 doubles, two triples and 17 home runs, good for 155 total bases that tied for the top mark in the AAC. His .371 batting average, 62 runs scored and 64 RBI all finished second on the circuit. Rodden started all 55 games for the Shockers, leading the team with 26 multi-hit games and tying for the team lead with 18 multi-RBI games. Rodden was recognized as the American Athletic Conference Player of the Year and was a unanimous First Team All-Conference selection. The native of Oktaha, Oklahoma produced a pair of two-homer games (UMass on 3/25, Kansas State on 4/18) and compiled Wichita State's longest hitting streak of the season at 18 games. He also added 12 stolen bases in 15 attempts in addition to a keen batting eye that produced 39 walks to only 26 strikeouts. Rodden took his game to another level down the stretch. Over the final three weeks of the season, Rodden hit .556 (20-for-36) with four doubles and four home runs, notching three three-hit games and a career-best four hits against South Florida on May 13. Rodden is expected to be a high pick in July's MLB Draft. He returned to Wichita State in 2023 after he was selected by the Oakland Athletics in the 10th round of the 2022 MLB Draft, one of just three players in the top 10 rounds who did not sign. In two seasons as a Shocker, Rodden compiled a .355 batting average, 31 doubles, four triples, 34 home runs and 112 RBI. Tolle was named First Team All-Central Region and First Team All-American Athletic Conference utility player after a breakout season as Wichita State's Saturday starter and designated hitter. The 6'6 lefty went 9-3 with a 4.62 ERA over 15 appearances including 14 starts. Tolle led the conference in wins and innings pitched, finishing the season with 97 strikeouts in 85.2 innings. He held opponents to a .245 batting average, racking up eight quality starts and four starts with 10 or more strikeouts. The native of Yukon, Oklahoma delivered his best start of the season against #7-ranked East Carolina, firing a complete game shutout in which he allowed just two hits and no walks while striking out 10. His season high in strikeouts came on March 19 against Creighton, when he fanned 12 Bluejays over 7.0 innings in a Shocker victory. Offensively, Tolle hit .311 with 13 home runs and 50 RBI, including homers in the midweek against Kansas State, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State. Neighbors earned his third All-America honor following his standout sophomore campaign where he struck out 86 batters in his 48 2/3 innings in relief. First recognized in 1949, the ABCA/Rawlings NCAA DI All-America teams are selected by the ABCA All-America &amp; Coach of the Year committee, which is chaired by Tommy Raffo of Arkansas State. The right-hander from Royse City, Texas is the eighth Wildcat in school history to earn ABCA All-America accolades and first since Ross Kivett in 2013. He was named a Big 12 Pitcher of the Week in addition to his All-Big 12 First Team selection. Neighbors broke the program's TrackMan-era pitch velocity record at 99-mph in the series opening win against Texas Tech. ⚾ Neighbors earns ABCA/Rawlings All-American honors

The defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs will return to St. Joseph for a 13th year for Chiefs Training Camp presented by Mosaic Life Care on the Missouri Western Campus and dates have been announced for practices. &nbsp;

Practices will begin on Sunday July 23rd and will run through Thursday, August 17th.&nbsp; All training camp practices will be free to attend, except for a select few where there will be a charge to attend. Missouri Western will charge a $5 parking fee per vehicle at practice&nbsp;

Missouri Western will charge a $5 admission fee on Sunday July 23rd, Saturday July 29th which is the Chiefs Champions Tour, and on Saturday, August 5th which is Family Fun Day. The Chiefs will also host two exclusive days for Season Ticket Holders that will not be open to the public on Monday July 24th and Wednesday August 9th. &nbsp;

Due to the expected influx of people coming to training camp, once again tickets will need to be reserved ahead of time and attendance will be limited to provide the best experience.&nbsp; Ticket reservations will open on Wednesday June 21st at 10am for Season Ticket holders and on Thursday June 22nd for the public. &nbsp;

Fans are limited to reserving a maximum of six tickets per practice and can reserve up to a maximum of three separate practices. Those select paid payment practices will require a payment ahead of time to reserve tickets. Paid practice dates and Season Ticket Member dates do not count towards the maximum ticket reservation allotment of three practices.&nbsp;

New to this year, Chiefs Tailgate Suites will be available for purchase in the North Endzone for groups of 10 or more.  </figure>By MATT PIKESt. Joseph PostThe defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs will return to St. Joseph for a 13th year for Chiefs Training Camp presented by Mosaic Life Care on the Missouri Western Campus and dates have been announced for practices. &nbsp;Practices will begin on Sunday July 23rd and will run through Thursday, August 17th.&nbsp; All training camp practices will be free to attend, except for a select few where there will be a charge to attend. Missouri Western will charge a $5 parking fee per vehicle at practice&nbsp;Missouri Western will charge a $5 admission fee on Sunday July 23rd, Saturday July 29th which is the Chiefs Champions Tour, and on Saturday, August 5th which is Family Fun Day. The Chiefs will also host two exclusive days for Season Ticket Holders that will not be open to the public on Monday July 24th and Wednesday August 9th. &nbsp;Due to the expected influx of people coming to training camp, once again tickets will need to be reserved ahead of time and attendance will be limited to provide the best experience.&nbsp; Ticket reservations will open on Wednesday June 21st at 10am for Season Ticket holders and on Thursday June 22nd for the public. &nbsp;Fans are limited to reserving a maximum of six tickets per practice and can reserve up to a maximum of three separate practices. Those select paid payment practices will require a payment ahead of time to reserve tickets. Paid practice dates and Season Ticket Member dates do not count towards the maximum ticket reservation allotment of three practices.&nbsp;New to this year, Chiefs Tailgate Suites will be available for purchase in the North Endzone for groups of 10 or more.
