The student-athletes attending 2023 Big 12 Football Media Days presented by Old Trapper have been announced. In addition to the players, each school’s head coach will also be in attendance. The two-day event will be held at AT&amp;T Stadium in Arlington, Texas on Wednesday, July 12 and Thursday, July 13.&nbsp; This season marks the debut of BYU, UCF, Cincinnati and Houston in the league. LIBERTY CORNER, N.J. — The USGA announced on Wednesday that Sand Creek Station, in Newton, Kan., will be the host site of the 3rd U.S. Adaptive Open Championship, set to be held July 8-10, 2024. The course previously hosted the 2014 U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship. “We are thrilled to announce the next chapter for our newest championship,” said Greg Sanfilippo, USGA senior championship director. “As we head into the 2nd U.S. Adaptive Open in just a few weeks, we’re excited to build on the legacy of last year’s inaugural event, which saw support from across the entire golf community. We know Sand Creek Station and the City of Newton will help us build on the foundation we started in Pinehurst and allow us to continue to showcase the abilities and stories of these incredible athletes.”&nbsp; &nbsp; This will be the second USGA championship conducted at Sand Creek Station, a public course that opened in 2006 and is managed by KemperSports. In 2014, Byron Meth defeated Doug Ghim in 37 holes in the 89th and final U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship ever contested. The course was designed by Jeffrey D. Brauer and is a Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary. It takes its name from the Sand Creek, which borders several holes, and the town’s long history as a stop on the Atchison, Topeka &amp; Santa Fe Railway.&nbsp; &nbsp; “I can’t think of another championship that means more to me than the Adaptive Open,” said Chris Tuohey, regional manager for KemperSports. “This is the opportunity of a lifetime for Sand Creek Station and our community. TOPEKA, Kan. -&nbsp;The Kansas State High School Activities Association Executive Board approved several items during the June meeting. Starting in 2024, State Football will be held at three locations with three games taking place at each site. State soccer and wrestling will also see changes coming in the near future. The board also finalized the SB 113 Policy for home school and non-public school student participation. Though the locations are to be determined at a later date, State Football for 2024 will be held November 29th and 30th with one game on Friday and two games on Saturday at each location. “The KSHSAA is at a point where we want to look at what combining sites in a few of our championships would look like. We believe it can add to the student and fan experience,” said Executive Director Bill Faflick. “Kansas has a rich tradition of great community support where we host championships. We do not anticipate that changing, it will just look slightly different depending on the year and selection of hosts.” The&nbsp;soccer&nbsp;postseason will under go some adjustments as well. All championships will be played at one site starting in the fall of 2024. Adjustment to soccer postseason are: Quarterfinals: -Seeding Criteria Remains the Same (East #1-4 &amp; West #1-4) - Higher seeds host - Play on Monday (Boys SCW 18 &amp; Girls SCW 47) - Postponement/Make-Up Date = Tuesday Semifinals: - Seeding criteria remains the same (East #1 vs. West #2 &amp; West #1 vs. East #2) - Higher seeds host - Play on Wednesday (Boys SCW 18 &amp; Girls SCW 47) - Postponement/Make-Up Date = Thursday Consolation and Championship Finals: - All classes played at one location - Play on Saturday (Boys SCW 18 &amp; Girls SCW 47) Wrestling&nbsp;will also see changes for this school year. Following the previously release change to 4A and 3-1A boys and girls wrestling in Salina, 6A and 5A will follow the same three day format at Hartman Arena. With the approved alterations the State Wrestling Championships will take place February 22, 23 and 24, 2024. The Executive Board also approved the Optimal Performance Calculator (OPC) for use starting this school year. Full details on the state schedule and the OPC use will be sent to school leaders at a later date. Another approved change coming this school year deals with regional dates for&nbsp;baseball&nbsp;at the 3A and 2-1A level. In an effort to help with pitcher availability, the regional seeding date has been moved up to the Saturday of&nbsp; SCW 44 to allow for the first round games of regionals to be played on Wednesday, Thursday or Friday of SCW 45. The second round (semifinals and finals) will take place Monday or Wednesday of&nbsp; SCW 46. Basketball&nbsp;and&nbsp;volleyball&nbsp;postseason formats were discussed and tabled for further discussion. Based upon the inclusion of non-public school student eligibility in the state budget bill, multiple rule modifications are necessary to adhere to House Sub for SB 113 from this year’s legislative session. The new policy language will be distributed to school leaders and posted on the KSHSAA website later this summer. Full details on the above items along with other action from the June KSHSAA Executive Board meeting will be distributed with the minutes in July.&nbsp;&nbsp;

(AP) — Gavin Williams held Kansas City to one hit through seven innings in his second major league start, Will Brennan hit a two-run double in the ninth inning, and the Cleveland Guardians rallied past the Royals 2-1. Kansas City had broken a scoreless tie in the eighth on a comebacker by Nicky Lopez against Trevor Stephan, who threw wildly to the plate while trying to cut down the run. Emmanuel Clase worked around another error in the ninth to complete the two-hitter and earn his 24th save. Guardians manager Terry Francona missed the game. He felt ill earlier Tuesday and was taken to a hospital to be evaluated.

Paul DeJong homered for St. Louis in its return after splitting two games against the Chicago Cubs in London over the weekend. Nolan Arenado had two hits, including an RBI double. It was the first meeting between the teams since St. Louis dropped two of three against Houston in July 2019. Martin Maldonado homered for Houston, which dropped to 7-14 in its last 21 games. Framber Valdez was charged with four runs and eight hits in six innings.

DENVER (AP) — Clayton Kershaw carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning, J.D. Martinez homered twice to reach 300 for his career, and the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Colorado Rockies 5-0 on Tuesday night. Kershaw (10-4) gave up one hit and faced the minimum in six innings, throwing only 79 pitches. He struck out two and left with some discomfort.

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Shohei Ohtani became the first American League pitcher in nearly 60 years to hit two homers and strike out 10 batters in a game, leading the Los Angeles Angels past the Chicago White Sox 4-2 in his latest extraordinary performance. Ohtani, who leads the majors with 28 home runs, hit solo shots in the first and seventh innings. It's first time he has gone deep twice while also pitching. The superstar from Japan struck out 10 in a 6 1/3-inning start that ended because of a cracked fingernail. He's the sixth player in major league history to homer at least twice and strike out at least 10.

UNDATED (AP) — New policies in the National Letter of Intent Program will eliminate athletes having to sit out a full season of competition for not complying with NLI rules under some circumstances. The binding agreement between athletes and schools has been part of recruiting since 1964. The Collegiate Commissioners Association no longer will penalize athletes who renege because of a head coaching change or for leaving his or her original school after one quarter or one semester. A release must be requested in both instances. The CCA also is allowing athletes who transfer to another four-year school to sign NLIs.

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — This rookie class of tight ends already made quite an impact on the draft. They’ll have to buck history if they’re going to leave the same type of impression on the field this year. Tight end is one of the toughest positions for rookies to make huge contributions. Only five rookie tight ends in NFL history have caught as many as 60 passes. This year's rookie class features nine tight ends who got drafted in the first three rounds. That's the highest total since the common draft era began in 1967.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The Philadelphia 76ers are on the brink of entering next season without James Harden. All signs point to Harden declining his $35.6 million option on Thursday and entering this summer as an unrestricted free agent. That leaves the 2018 NBA MVP and 10-time All-Star free to sign with any team. Tobias Harris stumped for a Harden return as he grabbed rebounds and posed for selfies with children Tuesday at a Fanatics promotion. The 76ers lost in the second round of the playoffs. It was another early exit for a team that won 54 games and marked 22 seasons since the franchise reached the Eastern Conference finals. It cost coach Doc Rivers his job.

WIMBLEDON, England (AP) — Carlos Alcaraz and Iga Swiatek are seeded No. 1 for Wimbledon. Alcaraz and Swiatek were expected to lead the fields because the All England Club adhered to the latest ATP and WTA rankings. Alcaraz overtook Novak Djokovic atop the men’s rankings on Monday. Djokovic has not played since collecting his men’s-record 23rd Grand Slam title at the French Open on June 11 and slid to No. 2. Alcaraz rose one spot after winning the grass-court tournament at Queen’s Club on Sunday. Swiatek has been No. 1 since April 2022.

MUSKOGEE, Okla. (AP) — Police in Muskogee, Oklahoma, are investigating the shooting deaths of three relatives of NASCAR driver Jimmie Johnson. Muskogee police spokesperson Lynn Hamlin says the bodies of Jack Janway; his wife, Terry Janway; and their 11-year-old grandson, Dalton Janway, were discovered Monday at a home in Muskogee. Hamlin confirmed the three are the parents and nephew of Johnson's wife, Chandra Janway. Hamlin says investigators believe Terry Janway shot and killed her husband and grandson before shooting herself. Johnson's race team has announced it is withdrawing his No. 84 Carvana Chevrolet from this weekend's NASCAR Cup Series event in Chicago.

DESTIN, Fla. (AP) — Former Arkansas quarterback Ryan Mallett, who also played for New England, Houston and Baltimore during five seasons in the NFL, has died. He was 35. Mallett died in an apparent drowning, according to the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office. Mallett was a football coach at White Hall High School in his native Arkansas, and the school district also confirmed his death in a post on its website. Arkansas athletic director Hunter Yurachek said the university “lost an incredibly special person.”

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Gavin Williams held Kansas City to one hit through seven innings in his second major league start, Will Brennan hit a two-run double in the ninth inning, and the Cleveland Guardians rallied past the Royals 2-1 on Tuesday night.

Kansas City had broken a scoreless tie in the eighth on a comebacker by Nicky Lopez against Trevor Stephan (4-3), who threw wildly to the plate while trying to cut down pinch-runner Dairon Blanco.

Emmanuel Clase worked around another error in the ninth to complete the two-hitter and earn his 24th save.

Guardians manager Terry Francona missed the game, with bench coach DeMarlo Hale filling in. Francona, who missed significant time in 2020 and 2021 with medical issues, felt ill earlier Tuesday and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/guardians-terry-francona-a34f74b9ac3888c771e2cc617944af0e">was hospitalized overnight for observation.</a>

“I found out right before the game,” Hale said. “He said, ‘Get in here, I’m not feeling too well.’ It was so close (to game time), I didn’t get to ask him what’s going on.”

Williams, Cleveland’s top pitching prospect, was superb after his slightly shaky debut last week, when he gave up four runs in 5 2/3 innings against Oakland.

“Definitely more comfortable this time,” Williams agreed.

He struck out six, walked one and needed only 92 pitches to get through seven innings. He faced his only real trouble in the third and retired Bobby Witt Jr. on a lineout with two runners on.

“Today he was a little more relaxed,” catcher Bo Naylor said. “He settled in very easily and just pitched with his stuff.”

Williams became the second pitcher in franchise history with a one-hit outing of seven innings or more during his first two appearances.

“He was commanding the fastball so well,” Naylor said. “The sky’s the limit for him when he’s doing that. He really showed us what he’s made of.”

Josh Naylor led off the ninth with a single against Royals closer Scott Barlow (2-4), Andrés Giménez drew a one-out walk and Brennan grounded his third hit of the game into the right-field corner to score them both.

“Honestly, I don’t think you could have written it up any better,” Brennan said. “I got put in the right situation and got a pitch to hit. As a competitor that’s the best thing you can ask for.”

The Kansas City-area native is batting .373 (31 for 83) over his last 23 games.

“Give them credit,” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. “They put the ball in play and that’s what they do, they make something happen.”

Barlow blew his second save of the season.

Royals starter Brady Singer gave up four singles over six innings. He allowed just two runners past first base.

“I thought he was tremendous,” Quatraro said. “He started working both sides of the plate. He was really efficient.”

The Guardians have played in a major league-most 34 one-run games, going 16-18.

Kansas City was shut out for the 10th time and fell to 22-57, its worst record in franchise history at this point in the season.

Royals C Salvador Perez was out of the lineup after having an eye procedure Monday.

Kansas City reinstated OF Kyle Isbel (left hamstring strain) from the 10-day injured list and optioned OF Nate Eaton to Triple-A Omaha.

LHP Logan Allen (3-2, 3.68 ERA) starts for Cleveland as the series continues on Wednesday. Kansas City had not announced a starter.

"The success that he has had as a player, his demeanor, how he delivers the message and how he sees the game a little bit differently from his experiences make him the total package. He really connects with people, loves the players and cares about the game. He'll go as far as he wants to go and do anything he wants to do in the game of basketball." OMAHA, Neb. — LSU blew out Florida 18-4 in a winner-take-all Game 3 of the Men’s College World Series finals, celebrating with a roaring sea of purple and gold in Omaha.&nbsp;

The Tigers had a chance to do this yesterday but instead lost by 20. With just a night's sleep to shake off the loss, LSU handed the Gators the same treatment until the final out.&nbsp;

Consider the 2017 MCWS finals loss against the Gators officially avenged, too.&nbsp;

Brayden Jobert led LSU with three runs — including a homer — and three RBI. Dylan Crews and Tre’ Morgan also recorded three runs. Crews is the fourth Golden Spikes Award winner to earn the honor and win the MCWS, and the first time a player has done that since 1995.&nbsp;

After the first inning where Florida scored two runs, Thatcher Hurd steadied himself on the mound and pitched six total innings. Hurd allowed just those two hits and struck out seven Florida batters.&nbsp;

LSU notched 24 total hits compared to just 5 for Florida.&nbsp;

The Tigers take home the championship for the first time since 2009, marking the seventh overall for LSU. &nbsp;

LSU came into this season ranked No. 1, then stumbled a bit at the end of the regular season and conference tournament. Starting the NCAA tournament seeded No. 5, the Tigers fell in into the losers’ bracket in the MCWS and rebounded from a 24-4 finals loss. HUTCHINSON, Kan.&nbsp;— The Hutchinson Monarchs opened its series against the Kingman Islanders on Monday night with a 7-2 win at Hobart-Detter Field.

The Monarchs didn't pick up their first hit until Will Edmunson led the sixth inning off with a single to left field. The Monarchs would tie the game up at two three batters later. Hogan Shelby broke the tie game with a two-run home run over the centerfield fence to put the Monarchs in front, 4-2.&nbsp;

Hutchinson (6-10) scored two more insurance runs in the seventh inning on a two-run single to left by Cooper Harris, giving the Monarchs a 6-2 lead. The Monarchs tacked on one more in the eighth.

Kingman (4-13) collected seven hits in the game, four of which stayed in the infield. The Monarchs recorded six hits in the win, two for extra bases.

Jarrett Flaggert picked up his first win in his first appearance on the mound in relief. Carson Cornelius recorded a three inning save, striking out four to earn his second save of the summer.

Xander Roberts suffered the loss for the Islanders on the mound after carrying a no-hitter into the sixth. He finished with 5.2 innings, striking out six and allowing four runs.

The series will switch to Kingman on Tuesday before returning to Hobart-Detter Field on Wednesday evening at 7 p.m.

(AP) — Prosecutors have dropped a misdemeanor assault charge filed last October against Las Vegas Raiders' wide receiver&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/davante-adams">Davante Adams</a>&nbsp;after he&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/kansas-city-chiefs-las-vegas-raiders-nfl-sports-davante-adams-9db797d4dd4fab59f16cea83324f918e">shoved a photographer to the ground</a>&nbsp;as he left the field following a loss at Kansas City.

The case filed in Kansas City municipal court was dismissed June 5, the Kansas City Star&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kansascity.com/news/local/crime/article2767">reported</a>.

Adams' attorney, J.R. Hobbs, declined to comment.

Police in Kansas City, Missouri, have said Adams pushed Ryan Zebley to the ground while running off the field after the Raiders lost 30-29 to the Chiefs on Oct. 10. Police at the time called it an “intentional, overt act” that caused whiplash, a headache and a possible minor concussion.

Adams apologized in his postgame comments to the media and&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/tae15adams/status/1579687398686228480?s=20&amp;t=jZwbBGXeaBWRP2YcD4TL5A">later on Twitter</a>.

“He jumped in front of me coming off the field. I kind of pushed him. He ended up on the ground,” Adams said after the game. “I want to apologize to him for that. That was just frustration mixed with him really just running in front of me."

Zebley was carrying video equipment for a local production company contracted with ESPN to cover the game. He sued Adams, the Raiders and the Chiefs in May, saying he was targeted online and feared for his safety in the immediate aftermath of the incident.

The lawsuit filed in Jackson County Circuit Court is ongoing, the Kansas City Star&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kansascity.com/sports/nfl/kansas-city-chiefs/article275795346.html">reported</a>.

Charge dropped against Raiders' Adams for shoving  photographer in KC

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Florida had been involved in more close games than any other team at the College World Series this year.

That changed in a big way Sunday, when the Gators unleashed an offensive barrage of historic proportions.

Florida scored the most runs in a CWS game and came up one short of the record for largest margin of victory in a 24-4 rout of LSU that forced a deciding Game 3 of the finals.

The Gators (54-16) hit six home runs on a windy day at Charles Schwab Field and pounded LSU (53-17) pitching for a CWS record-tying 23 hits a day after Ty Floyd struck out 17 in the Tigers' 4-3, 11-inning win in Game 1.

“We did exactly what we said we were going to do — flush last night and come in today ready to play,” outfielder Wyatt Langford said. “The balls were falling for us today. And that’s just kind of how it went.”

The teams play the final game of the College World Series on Monday night, with the winner earning the national championship.

“Obviously we can’t take any of these runs into tomorrow,” Gators coach Kevin O'Sullivan said. “We’ll have to reset, reboot. But awfully proud of the way they responded from last night’s tough loss.”

LSU coach Jay Johnson said he and his players must quickly forget what happened Sunday.

“So we’re going to stick to how we prepare and roll it out tomorrow and give it everything we have,” Johnson said. “One game for the national championship. I think coach O’Sullivan probably feels great about his team, as he should with the players they have.

"I feel great with my team, with the players we have.”

Two-way star Jac Caglianone will pitch for the Gators. Johnson didn’t announce a starter or comment on the availability of ace Paul Skenes, who has thrown 15 2/3 innings over two CWS starts and would be coming off three days’ rest if he were to pitch.

Florida came into Sunday having played in four of the CWS record-tying eight one-run games. The Gators had totaled 17 runs in those games before the offense broke loose.

Ty Evans and Caglianone each homered twice, with Evans' grand slam breaking things open early. Langford and BT Riopelle also went deep.

Florida's 24 runs broke Notre Dame's CWS record, set in a 23-2 win over Northern Colorado in 1957. The 20-run win over the Tigers ranks second to that game for largest margin.

The Gators hadn’t scored so many runs since a 28-5 win over Winthrop on March 3, 2019.

LSU hadn’t given up so many in any of its 245 NCAA Tournament games or in any game since a 28-2 loss to Alabama in 1997. The Tigers committed a season-high five errors that led to six unearned runs.

Asked if there was a point he felt the game was slipping away, LSU star Dylan Crews said, “Not really. I guess you could say when it got up to about 20 runs. But we felt like we were in it the whole time, honestly. We made some pretty remarkable comebacks in our career.”

Langford was 5 for 5 with six RBIs with two doubles and his homer.

Evans' shot down the left-field line off Nate Ackenhausen (3-1) tied it 1 in the second. His grand slam off Gavin Guidry in the third was a high fly that looked to be headed foul, but the 20-mph wind blowing left to right pushed it inside the left-field foul pole.

The Tigers should have been out of the third before Evans came to bat, but shortstop Jordan Thompson’s fielding error cost them a chance at a double play and kept going what became a six-run inning.

Langford connected in the fifth, and Caglianone followed with his nation-leading 32nd and 33rd homers.

Florida starter Hurston Waldrep, who had allowed two earned runs in 21 innings in the NCAA Tournament, went just 2 1/3. Adams was charged after shoving a photographer to the ground while walking off the field. The Kansas City Star reports the charge was dropped June 5. Adams' lawyer declined to comment. Kansas City police say the photographer suffered whiplash, a headache and a possible minor concussion. Adams apologized in his postgame media comments and later on Twitter. The photographer said in an ongoing lawsuit against Adams, the Raiders and the Chiefs that he was targeted online and feared for his safety after the incident.

It's the third Cup Series victory for Chastain and his first since Talladega in April of last year. Chastain also gave Trackhouse Racing its first victory of the year at its home track. He led a race-high 100 laps, including the final 34. The 30-year-old had to weave by some slower traffic to hold off Truex by 0.789 seconds. Chastain clinched a playoff berth and celebrated with a burnout before smashing a watermelon. Denny Hamlin finished third, Chase Elliott was fourth and Kyle Larson was fifth.

CROMWELL, Conn (AP) — Keegan Bradley built a big enough lead in front of adoring New England fans that he broke the tournament record at the Travelers Championship despite a shaky closing stretch. Bradley closed with a 2-under 68 for a three-shot victory. He finished at 23-under 257 at TPC River Highlands, a shot better than Kenny Perry’s previous record from 2009. The 37-year-old Vermont native won on the PGA Tour for the sixth time. Zac Blair closed with a 62 and finished in a tie for second with Brian Harman, who shot 64. It was Blair's best finish on the PGA Tour.

WICHITA, KS – Wind Surge shortstop Ernie Yake was the stand-out player of the game when he went 2-3 at the plate and drove in a run in a low scoring ball game. He also had a couple of impressive defensive fielding plays throughout the game. The Travelers defeated the Wind Surge 3-1 and won the series five games to one.

The Travelers scored first. Isiah Gilliam continued to cause trouble for the Surge pitching, as he has all series, when he hit a line drive RBI single in the top of the first. Then Patrick Frick hit a sacrifice fly that scored a run in the top of the second.

Wichita got on board in the bottom of the second. Yake started at shortstop and got his first hit of the season for the Wind Surge in his third game played. He hit a double and was able to drive in a run on a beautifully struck ball straight down the right field foul line that stayed fair.

Spencer Packard hit an RBI single in the top of the fifth that added the final run for the Travelers.

Travis Adams was the starting pitcher for the Wind Surge and was credited with the loss. He pitched four and one thirds innings, gave up three runs on four hits and struck out four batters. Kyle Tyler started for the Travs and earned the win. He pitched six innings, gave up one run one six hits and struck out four batters.

The Wichita Wind Surge fall to 28-34 on the season and the first place Arkansas Travelers improve to 45-24.

Owen Griffith has been placed on Voluntarily Retired List. Patrick Winkle improved his hit streak to ten games. This marks the end of the first half of the season. The second half will begin on Wednesday with all teams records reset to 0-0.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Jose Siri homered, Wander Franco had a sacrifice fly in a two-run seventh, and the MLB-leading Tampa Bay Rays beat Kansas City 3-1 Sunday for a split of a four-game series against the lowly Royals.

The Rays are 6-7 over their last 13 games, including a four-game split with Oakland, which has the worst record in the majors.

Still, Tampa Bay reached the halfway point of the season at 54-27, with a 4 1/2 game lead over Baltimore in the AL East.

“It's awesome,” Rays starter Tyler Glasnow said. “It's great. We've been playing really well all season and we've maintained it throughout the season as well.”

Kansas City dropped to 22-56 and is winless in 11 consecutive series, the third-longest stretch during the same season in franchise history.

“Tough game,” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. “We were in it right to the end.

Siri scored on Clarke's wild pitch before Franco's sacrifice fly made it 3-1.

Siri opened the scoring with a solo homer in the third-inning, He has hit 12 of his 14 homers since May 7..

After Colin Poche (5-2) worked a scoreless eighth, and Pete Fairbanks got three outs in the ninth to earn his eighth save.

Both staters pitched well, but didn't figure in the decision.

Kansas City's Daniel Lynch gave up one run and six hits over six innings. The lefty was coming off a start Tuesday at Detroit in which he allowed one hit in seven scoreless innings.

“Daniel threw the ball well,” Quatraro said. “They made him work. Made really tough pitches, got soft contact.”

Glasnow, making his sixth start after beginning the season on the injured list with an oblique injury, gave up one run, four hits and struck out a season-high 12 in five innings. The 6-foot-8 right-hander struck out the side in the first, third and fifth innings.

“Gasoline,” Siri said through a translator about Glasnow's stuff.

Kansas City tied it at 1 in the fourth when Witt singled, swiped second for the Royals' third stolen base in the game and scored on Maikel Garcia's base hit.

Royals: LHP Ryan Yarbrough (facial fractures), hit by a 106.2 mph liner off the bat of Oakland's Ryan Noda on May 7, went four scoreless innings for Triple-A Omaha on Saturday in his second minor league start.

Rays: Ace Shane McClanahan (mid-back tightness) threw four minutes in the outfield and seven pitches off the mound and said it went good. His next start has been pushed back from Wednesday to Friday after leaving last Thursday's start in the fourth inning.

Royals: RHP Brady Singer (4-7) and Cleveland RHP Gavin Williams (0-1) are Tuesday night's starters.

Rays:: RHP Taj Bradley (5-3) will face Arizona on Tuesday night.

⚾ LSU outlasts Florida in extra innings to take Game 1 of College World Series final

Assistant Josh Eilert has been selected as the interim coach at West Virginia, punctuating a hectic week after Bob Huggins resigned following a drunken driving arrest.

Eilert, who has no previous head coaching experience, emerged as athletic director Wren Baker’s choice to shepherd the team through a challenging offseason stretch. Baker stayed in-house and chose not to hire a full-time coach given the limited options of conducting a nationwide search in June and the urgency of finding someone — anyone — with the start of practice only four months away.

“I spoke with knowledgeable basketball people around the country over the last week, including coaches, professional basketball executives and others of whom I trust to identify a strong group of candidates to speak with,” Baker said in a statement announcing the move Saturday night. “Ultimately what I came to recognize, was that conducting this search in late June was difficult for many of our candidates and also it put our talented student-athletes at a real disadvantage. With that said, we will conduct our national search at the conclusion of the 2023-24 season.”

Under NCAA rules, West Virginia’s players have a 30-day window to enter the transfer portal, and several apparently have chosen to do so, although they have the option to return. Eilert could be the glue that keeps together an upper class-heavy roster built largely through transfers.

“Josh Eilert is the right person to lead our men’s basketball program next season,” Baker said. “He has been an important part of our success, and he has displayed great integrity, work ethic and dedication. He has been involved in all facets of our program during his time on the basketball staff, and he has earned this opportunity to coach our team on an interim basis for the 2023-24 season.”

The 43-year-old Eilert first joined Huggins as a graduate assistant at Kansas State in 2006, then followed him to West Virginia in 2007. Eilert has had a variety of roles with the Mountaineers, including video coordinator and director of basketball operations, before being named an assistant coach in July 2022.

“I would like to thank Wren Baker, President Gee, Rob Alsop, Steve Uryasz and the rest of our administration for believing in me and giving me the opportunity to lead our storied Mountaineer basketball program,” Eilert said. “I would also like to thank Coach Huggins for retaining me on his staff at K-State in 2006 and for bringing me to West Virginia in 2007. I’ve learned so much from Coach Huggins, and it was an honor to work for a Hall of Fame coach for the last 17 years."

Among others who were linked to the opening were UAB coach and former Huggins assistant Andy Kennedy, and former West Virginia and Michigan coach John Beilein.

Huggins had assembled arguably one of the better recruiting classes in the country from the portal for next season, including Syracuse center Jesse Edwards, Arizona guard Kerr Kriisa, Manhattan guards Jose Perez and Omar Silverio, and Montana State guard RaeQuan Battle.

Huggins’ 16-year run as West Virginia’s coach ended with his resignation on June 17. The day before, he was charged with driving under the influence in Pittsburgh. According to a criminal complaint, Huggins initially believed he was in Columbus, Ohio. A breath test determined Huggins’ blood alcohol content was more than twice the legal limit. He has a preliminary hearing scheduled for Aug. 3 in Pittsburgh.

Huggins also pleaded no contest in 2004 to driving under the influence when he was the coach at Cincinnati. He was fired a year later amid a power struggle with the school’s president as well as the aftermath of the DUI arrest.

His resignation at West Virginia came a month after the university suspended him for three games for using an anti-gay slur while also denigrating Catholics during a radio interview.

The 69-year-old Huggins was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame last September.
