CORSICANA, Tex.&nbsp;— The Hutchinson Community College football season opener at Navarro College on Saturday has been pushed back to a 7:30 p.m. kickoff from Community National Bank &amp; Trust Stadium. 

The game was scheduled for 7 p.m., but has been moved back 30 minutes due to the forecasted temperature at kickoff.

The Blue Dragons are ranked No. 2 in the preseason National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) poll, while the Bulldogs are No. 11.

The game will be broadcasted on&nbsp;<a href="https://streamdb5web.securenetsystems.net/v5/KHUT">Country 102.9-FM</a>, the radio home for Blue Dragon athletics. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. with Countdown to Kickoff beginning at 6:30 p.m.&nbsp;

LAWRENCE, Kan. –&nbsp;Kansas quarterback Jalon Daniels has been selected to the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Watch List, awarded to the top senior or upperclassmen quarterback set to graduate with their class. The Watch List recognition is Daniels’ sixth of the preseason.

Daniels is one of 48 of the nation’s leading quarterbacks on the list, which includes players from all 10 FBS conferences as well as a football independent. The preseason watch list is selected by the distinguished Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Selection Committee, a group of prominent college football journalists, commentators, announcers, and former players. This year’s watch list was selected based on career player performance and expectations heading into the 2023 football season.

The namesake of the Golden Arm Award has a storied history. Johnny Unitas was an 18-year veteran of the NFL, who played his collegiate career at the University of Louisville before joining the Baltimore Colts in 1958. His career passing figures include 2,830 pass completions for 40,239 yards, 290 touchdowns and throwing a touchdown pass in 47 consecutive games.

The Golden Arm Award is the sixth preseason watch list to recognize Daniels, who was also named the Big 12 Preseason Offensive Player of the Year. Daniels appears on watch lists for the Manning Award, Walter Camp Award, Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award, the Maxwell Award and the Wuerffel Trophy.

Daniels was a breakthrough player during the 2022 season as he led the Jayhawks to a 5-0 start and the program’s first bowl game appearance since 2008. He was a Second Team All-Big 12 selection after completing 152-of-230 (66.1 percent) passes for 2,014 yards and 18 touchdowns, while adding 425 yards and seven touchdowns on the ground. Daniels capped off the season with a record-setting performance in the AutoZone Liberty Bowl, where he went 37-of-55 for 544 yards and five touchdowns, while also rushing for a touchdown.

A native of Lawndale, California, Daniels was previously named to the Preseason All-Big 12 First Team and earned preseason all-conference honors from Athlon Sports and Phil Steele. Most notably, current K-State offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/football/roster/coaches/collin-klein/1979">Collin Klein</a>&nbsp;was the 2012 recipient, while Chad May and Michael Bishop were finalists in 1994 and 1998, respectively. Franco was placed on the restricted list for a week on Aug. 14 while MLB launched an investigation following social media posts suggesting he was in a relationship with a minor. The AP has not been able to verify the reported posts.

Williams was in his 11th season in his position after serving as the club’s general manager for 12 seasons. He was one of baseball's most prominent Black executives. Hahn had been the GM since October 2012. The White Sox are finishing a miserable season. They have dropped eight of 10 to fall to 49-77 on the season. Chicago made the playoffs in 2020 and 2021, and then went 81-81 last year.

CLEVELAND (AP) — Cleveland Guardians manager Terry Francona has had serious talks with the organization about his future, hinting that this could be his final season. The winningest manager in club history, the 64-year-old Francona, who has dealt with major health issues in recent years, did not announce his retirement and said any of those decisions will be addressed later. Francona is in his 11th season with Cleveland. He led the Boston Red Sox to two World Series titles before joining the Guardians in 2013. The Guardians have made the playoffs six times and had only one losing season with Francona. This has been an especially challenging season for the defending AL Central champions because of injuries.

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — The Denver Broncos signed wide receiver Josh Hammond on Tuesday after placing wide receiver Jalen Virgil on injured reserve. Virgil tore the meniscus in his right knee while trying to score at the end of a 50-yard catch-and-run just before halftime of the Broncos’ preseason game against San Francisco on Saturday night. His ACL wasn’t damaged but he’ll need surgery. Hammond is a second-year pro from the University of Florida who entered the NFL with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2020 and played in two games for them in 2021. He was on the DC Defenders for the 2023 XFL season, catching 34 passes for 331 yards and a touchdown.

(AP) — Saints coach Dennis Allen says he expects tight end Jimmy Graham to return this week to practice following what team officials have described as a “medical episode” that led police in the Los Angeles area to arrest the veteran player and take him to a hospital. Saints team physician Dr. John Amoss has said Graham likely had a seizure and was disoriented when he was picked up by authorities in Orange County on Friday night. The Saints were in California last week for joint practices with the Los Angeles Chargers in advance of New Orleans’ 22-17 victory in both teams’ second preseason game on Sunday night. Graham did not play in the game.

UNDATED (AP) — The Basketball World Cup starts Friday, spread out across three countries for the first two rounds before all the biggest games get played in Manila to decide which nation will go home with gold medals and the Naismith Trophy on Sept. 10. Spain is the defending champion, having won in China four years ago. The U.S. was only seventh in that tournament, its worst finish ever in a major international event. But the Americans have high hopes, and enter as the tournament favorites.

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Shea Langeliers homered for the second consecutive day, and the Oakland Athletics spoiled the return of former Cy Young Award winner Zack Greinke with a 5-4 win over the Kansas City Royals on Tuesday night.

Aledmys Díaz added three RBIs for the A’s, and Brent Rooker had two hits a day after hitting his second game-ending home run of the season.

The game between the two worst teams in baseball attracted a crowd of 4,021, with chants of “Sell the team” echoing throughout a mostly quiet Coliseum during much of the evening.

Langeliers drew a louder response from the crowd with his home run. The veteran catcher has quickly become a fan favorite in Oakland after being acquired from the Braves in March 2022 in exchange for slugger Matt Olson, who is tied with two-way Japanese star Shohei Ohtani for the majors lead with 43 home runs.

“We all know the power and the hit tool’s there,” A’s manager Mark Kotsay said. “This isn’t easy at this level to come up here and have immediate success. We saw it with Sean Murphy in his first full season, and I think we’re seeing it with Shea as well. He’s really showing progress of working in the right direction.”

Greinke had been out for two weeks with a right elbow injury before being activated off the injured list prior to Tuesday’s game. A six-time All-Star who has 224 career wins and won the 2009 AL Cy Young Award, followed opener Angel Zerpa (1-2) and pitched out of the bullpen for the first time since doing so for the Houston Astros against the Chicago White Sox in Game 3 of the ALDS on Oct. 10, 2021.

The 39-year-old Greinke looked sharp while throwing 53 pitches and allowing two hits in four scoreless innings. He had five strikeouts and allowed one runner past first base.

“He looked like he was back to his normal form,” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. “Got a bunch of swing and misses, soft contact. It was a really positive outing for him. It’s great to have him back.”

The last-place A’s have won two straight against the Royals and four of five overall this season, one of the few teams Oakland has been able to handle this season.

Hogan Harris (3-6) got the win despite an erratic outing when he allowed four runs in 3 2/3 innings. Trevor May worked the ninth for his 13th save.

Langelier’s home run leading off the second off Zerpa traveled 412 feet. All but two of the slugger’s 14 home runs have gone at least 400 feet.

“This year when I have hit them it seems like I’ve connected pretty good,” Langeliers said. “But it kind of feels like they’re few and far between. If I keep building this momentum and keep it going, it’d be nice.”

Harris is partners with Langeliers in a fantasy football league and said he always tries to stop and watch when his friend is batting.

“I gotta watch my boy,” Harris said. “I can’t not watch him, or he’ll yell at me. Him and I, since the very first time we met each other, we just kind of clicked well.”

Díaz made it 5-2 with a two-run double just inside the third base line. The ball rolled into foul territory past the A’s bullpen then bounced off the wall back onto the field.

Salvador Perez had a two-run single off Harris in the fifth, pulling the Royals within 5-4.

Zerpa struggled with his control early and hit the first batter in the first then walked the second. After Carlos Perez flew out, Rooker lined an RBI single into left-center. Zack Gelof scored on a sacrifice fly by Díaz, easily beating the off-target throw by Royals right fielder Drew Waters.

The Royals tied it on Kyle Isbel’s two-out, bases-loaded single in the second off Harris, who pitched in relief of opener Dany Jiménez.

Royals second baseman Michael Massey&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/BallySportsKC/status/1694196167574167947">made a tremendous defensive play</a>&nbsp;to rob Ryan Noda of a hit in the seventh inning. Little Rock, AR - Wind Surge starting pitcher Travis Adams was electric to start the game. He gave up no hits and struck out five batters through three, but Surge bats did not provide him the support he needed. They struggled to put a runner in scoring position until the seventh inning and could not take advantage of the situation once they got there. The Travelers defeated the Wind Surge 5-0 in the road series opener.

Arkansas was able to get their first hits and run of the game in the bottom of the fourth. Spencer Packard hit a leadoff single that ended the potential no-hitter. He was followed by Isiah Gilliam with his own single and then Alberto Rodriguez hit a line drive to left field for an RBI single. The Travelers ended the inning with a one run lead off three hits.

The Travelers added another run in the bottom of the sixth. Josh Morgan grounded out, but he hit the ball sharply enough up the middle to drive in Robert Perez Jr. from third.

The Wind Surge were the closest they had been all ball game to getting on the board in the top of the seventh. For the first time in the game, they were able to get runners in scoring position. Two walks and a Dalton Shuffield single loaded the bases, but the Surge could not capitalize on the opportunity.

In the bottom of the eighth the Travelers put some insurance runs on the board. Perez Jr. hit a single on a ground ball to right field that was mishandled by Yoyner Fajardo which allowed two more runs to score on the error. Morgan then hit an RBI single on a ground ball to center field.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Royals unveiled plans for two dramatically different locations for a replacement to the aging Kauffman Stadium on Tuesday, calling them on equal footing even as the team-issued date for a decision looms next month.

The first location, called the East Village, would consist of a ballpark anchoring a 27-acre development just blocks away from the thriving Power &amp; Light District, where T-Mobile Center already exists. The second location is a 90-acre tract across the Missouri River in Clay County, where the Royals would have more ability to develop commercial and residential properties.

Both plans were produced by Populous, the Kansas City-based sports architecture giant, which has been responsible for renovation or construction of more than 20 stadiums currently in use across Major League Baseball.

“We knew we were engaged in a generational decision. The K has been the home to the Royals for 50-plus years — been a great home — but it's time for a new one,” said Brooks Sherman, the Royals' president of business operations. “It's actually incredible that we have these two locations to even consider as a future home and sustain ourselves as a Major League city.”

The Royals announced plans to leave Kauffman Stadium about two years ago. But progress has been slow in deciding on a path forward, given the myriad factors involved in&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/royals-stadium-kansas-missouri-ddd25487770de16bcb48595a0eea550d">the proposed $2 billion-plus ballpark and entertainment district</a>.

The Royals have long shared with the Kansas City Chiefs sales tax revenue from Jackson County for the upkeep of Kauffman and Arrowhead stadiums, both of which reside in the Truman Sports Complex. But while the Royals intend to build elsewhere, the preference of Chiefs owner Clark Hunt is to remain at Arrowhead Stadium and renovate the existing NFL venue.

Further complicating matters is the fact that the Royals and Chiefs are both tied to a lease with Jackson County that does not expire until 2031. If the Royals decide on the downtown location, they would remain in Jackson County and the teams could seek to extend the lease; if they move to Clay County, some tricky politicking and negotiation would be necessary.

Regardless of the site, Sherman reiterated that the Royals are&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/royals-owner-mlb-stadium-acea912fb6286f7ae928c9eab40d82fe">prepared to spend about $1 billion in private funds on the project</a>, and they intend to move into their new stadium for opening day of the 2028 season.

“That's part of the equation is to ensure we're negotiating properly and having the proper back and forth with each set of governing bodies — the elected leaders — and we're doing that with both Clay County and Jackson County,” Sherman said.

The downtown site, which has long been viewed as the frontrunner, would lean into commercial and business possibilities to help drive the revenue that&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/royals-mlb-baseball-stadium-7047da4fe44b5425b61c74c0a7bec8e4">MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred has said is necessary</a>&nbsp;for a small-market club to compete.

The proposed stadium, which Populous founder Earl Santee warned is not a final design, features swooping roof lines that are reminiscent of Kauffman Stadium. There is a homage to the fountains for which the existing park is known in right-center field and what Santee called “one of the most intimate seating bowls in all of baseball.”

Yet the stadium comes with drawbacks. Ingress and egress is already a challenge in the downtown corridor, and parking could be difficult, particularly for day games when existing parking is already taken up by those working in the area.

The location in North Kansas City would continue the revitalization of what was once a rundown industrial neighborhood.

The ballpark is meant to feel more “gritty,” Santee said, to better fit within the existing area. But a large number of buildings would be razed to make room for hotels and conference centers, residential buildings and parking pavilions, and a large park and lake that could serve as a year-round gathering space. There is even a proposed 4,000-seat performance venue.

Imran Aukhil with the economic advisory firm HR&amp;A said both projects would have about a $320 million impact on the region, not including the construction itself, which would spur at least 20,000 jobs and $2.8 billion in total economic output.

As the late-September date for a decision nears, the Royals are continuing to negotiate with political and business leaders involved with both proposed locations. They also are soliciting feedback from fans, many of whom have been lukewarm about the prospect of building a new ballpark for a team that is once again on pace to lose more than 100 games.

“We've got work to do on a number of fronts," Sherman said, “to get to our decision on this.”

KANSAS CITY, Mo.&nbsp;— The Kansas City Royals released renderings for its new ballpark earlier this afternoon on social media accounts. The Royals shared four images, two of which are for the East Village location, and two for the North Kansas City District.

Royals Chairman and CEO John Sherman shared an <a href="https://kcballparkdistrict.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/2023-MG-LetterHeadDigital-CW-0724-FINAL1030pm.pdf">open letter on July 25</a> regarding the vision for the new ballpark district and the two sites under construction.

⚾ Royals release the future vision of new ballpark

HUTCHINSON, Kan.&nbsp;— The Hutchinson Community College athletic department announced on Tuesday that the football home opener against Ellsworth (Iowa) on Saturday, Sept. 2 will now kickoff at 11 a.m. 

The game was originally scheduled for 1 p.m., but has been moved up two hours due to the high temperatures scheduled.&nbsp;

No. 2 Hutchinson will open the season on Saturday in Corsicana, Texas against No. 11 Navarro College. The game will be broadcasted on <a href="https://streamdb5web.securenetsystems.net/v5/KHUT">Country 102.9-FM</a>, the radio home for Blue Dragon athletics. 🏈 Blue Dragons home opener kickoff time moved up due to heat

LAWRENCE, Kan. –&nbsp;Kansas sophomore running back Daniel Hishaw Jr. is among the players named to the 2023 College Football Comeback Player of the Year Watch List, which was announced Tuesday.

This is the second preseason honor for Hishaw, who was previously named to the watch list for Doak Walker Award, which is presented to the nation’s top running back.

Hishaw had an electric start to the 2022 season and finished the season ranked third on the team in rushing despite playing just five games before suffering a season-ending hip injury. He had at least 50 rushing yards in each of the first four games and averaged 6.0 yards per carry for the season with five rushing touchdowns. Hishaw added 95 yards and a touchdown receiving, including one of the highlight plays of the season as he took a screen pass 73 yards for a score against Duke.

A native of Moore, Oklahoma, Hishaw has rushed for 495 yards in his two seasons at Kansas. In 13 career games, he is averaging 7.4 yards per carry with eight total touchdowns to his credit. He is expected to fully healthy for the start of the 2023 season.

Since 2018, the award has recognized college football student-athletes for overcoming injury, illness, or other circumstances. The honorees are selected in a vote by a panel of AP writers, editors, college sports information directors, and Fiesta Bowl Organization representatives.

Kansas opens the upcoming season on Friday, September 1, taking on Missouri State at David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium. Game matchups were announced Tuesday for the tournament, which will be held Nov. 24-25 on George Town, Cayman Islands.

Kansas will first meet Virginia Tech, who played in the Final Four last season, on Friday, Nov. 24 at 4 p.m. CT, before taking on perennial power UConn on Saturday, Nov. 25, at 6:30 p.m. CT in the final game of the tournament.

Virginia Tech finished the 2022-23 season ranked No. 4 in the WBCA Coaches Poll after finishing 31-5 and advancing to the Final Four for the first time in program history. The game in the Cayman Islands will be the first meeting between the two programs.

UConn, led by Hall of Fame coach Geno Auriemma, is one of the most successful women’s basketball programs in the nation, having won a record 11 NCAA National Championships and a women’s record four in a row from 2013-16. 🏀 WBB: Jayhawks to face Virginia Tech, UConn at Cayman Islands Classic

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — As high school sports continue to practice or compete across the state of Kansas, the temperatures continue to rise. Several places have seen records broken with high temperatures or high heat indices.

Several schools across the state have had to make adjustments to when or how practices are conducted because of the excessive heat that continues to throttle the Sunflower State.

How are athletic trainers, athletic directors, and coaches determining when to practice?

Last fall, the Kansas State High School Activities Association (KSHSAA) released a new recommended activity modification policy based on the Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT).&nbsp;

Thanks to a grant from the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) in February of 2022, all 354 KSHSAA member schools were equipped with a WBGT device at no cost to the school.

The device is an electronic meter that provides a more precise measurement of apparent temperature than heat indices by accounting for environmental factors such as humidity, wind speed and solar radiation.

The Spirit Night was scheduled to take place from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at both Crusader Stadium and Jim Baker Fieldhouse. Below was the scheduled order of events prior to the cancelation.&nbsp;

The Crusader Athletics Facebook page then made the announcement this morning about the cancelation of the event.&nbsp;

Buhler cancels annual Spirit Night on Friday due to extreme heat

HUTCHINSON, Kan.&nbsp;— Hutchinson High School has moved its Blue/Gold Night from Thursday to Friday due to the extreme heat. The fall sports introductions will now take place on Friday, Aug. 25 with the schedule below.

Hutch High moves fall sports introductions to Friday due to heat

The days of the Air Raid dominating the Big 12 might be over. In less than a decade, the league has gone from having more than half the conference running some version of the system to dominating opponents on the ground. Five of the 18 running backs taken in April's draft came from the Big 12. Reasons for the shift include changes in coaching, available talent and the fact that so many schools ran the Air Raid that they have become adept at defending it. That in turn has led to new, more balanced ways of running the system.

Chris Klieman won four national championships in five seasons at North Dakota State, bludgeoning teams with a run-heavy offense predicated on a bruising line and a deep stable of talented running backs.

Old-school football. The kind he grew up watching in Waterloo, Iowa.

But when Klieman was hired to replace Hall of Fame coach Bill Snyder at Kansas State after the 2018 season, two closely tied questions followed him: Could he replicate the tremendous success he had at the Football Championship Subdivision level in the Big 12? And could he do it relying on the same seemingly bygone offensive system he ran with the Bison?

The Wildcats leaned on Deuce Vaughn, who was eighth nationally in rushing and is now with the Dallas Cowboys, to win the conference championship last season, upending eventual College Football Playoff participant TCU in the title game. As a team, they joined Oklahoma in finishing in the top 15 nationally in yards-per-game on the ground.

"We have to run the football," Klieman said by way of explanation. "If we struggle, it's because we can't run the football."

Sounds simple, but that line of thought represents a tremendous shift from the days when the Big 12 was dominated by the Air Raid, that high-flying offensive system arguably perfected by the late Mike Leach at Texas Tech.

In 2014, seven of the top 13 teams nationally in total offense had branches tracing back to the coaching tree of key Air Raid architect Hal Mumme. By the following year, more than half of the Big 12 was running some version of the Air Raid, and three of the top eight nationally in passing offense came from the landlocked conference.

So what has changed? Why have teams that once embraced no huddles and thin playbooks, wide offensive line splits and running backs who rarely ran shifted toward — at minimum — balanced offenses and, in some cases, ground-based attacks?

Start with the turnover in the coaching ranks.

Many of the Air Raid's staunchest advocates have moved on — think then-Texas Tech coach Kliff Kingsbury, who headed for the NFL, or former Oklahoma coach Lincoln Riley, who is now at USC. In their place came coaches like the Red Raiders' Joey McGuire, who grew up embracing the ground-and-pound run game, and the Sooners' Brent Venables, whose offensive coordinator Jeff Lebby is an old line and running backs coach.

Even at TCU, where coach Sonny Dykes learned the nuances of the Air Raid from Leach during their days at Texas Tech, there is an emphasis on running the ball. That is a big reason why Dykes hired Kendal Briles to run his offense this season.

"I think we come from the same place as far as our football background in a lot of ways," Dykes said. "He wants to run the ball; he wants to be a physical offense that runs the football. And that's what I want to be as well."

It worked last season. Kendre Miller ran for nearly 1,400 yards as the Horned Frogs advanced to the national title game.

"We saw the value in having a tough, physical, hard-nosed run game," Dykes said.

That leads into the second reason so many Big 12 schools have migrated away from all-out aerial offense: personnel.

The Wildcats have had Vaughn in the backfield. The Horned Frogs featured Miller, who was drafted by the New Orleans Saints, and Oklahoma leaned on Eric Gray, now with the New York Giants. Texas had Bijan Robinson, the eighth overall pick of the NFL draft by Atlanta, and backup Roschon Johnson, who was selected in the fourth round by the Chicago Bears.

That's five of the 18 running backs selected in the April draft from the Big 12.

And even though they're gone, their impact will continue to be felt.

"We lost two really good players," Texas coach Steve Sarkisian said, "(but) when you start thinking about Keilan Robinson, start thinking about Jonathan Brooks, you start thinking about Jaydon Blue — those three guys spent a year or two with those guys in that room and know what it looks like and know what it takes."

In the case of Oklahoma State, inexperience at quarterback rather than a star running back is what led coach Mike Gundy — one of the many early champions of the Air Raid system — to expand his running game last season.

"We went through a period of time from 2010 up until 2021, I guess, was the year we played in the Fiesta Bowl against Notre Dame, where we're running up massive numbers of yards and points. So as you do that, or as we did that, we slowly but surely got away from some of the things we instilled in our program in my first four or five years as a head coach," Gundy said. "But now we have kind of migrated back to: These are things we need to do to be successful.

"If we're healthy up front, we're very experienced at quarterback, then yeah, we can do anything we want throwing the ball. That's more of a reason why we moved back to allocating more time to the running game than we have the last eight or 10 years."

Then there's the third reason so many schools have returned to offensive balance: The Air Raid had become so prevalent that just about every program has run some version of it, and thus every defense has practiced ways to stop it.

So coaches like Houston's Dana Holgorsen, who was in the Big 12 at West Virginia and is back after conference realignment, began to put wrinkles in the Air Raid. The big one was implementing the run-pass option, where quarterbacks have the latitude to hand off, keep the ball and throw downfield, or tuck and run themselves.

Two of those options involving running the ball. And some semblance of balance is achieved.

"There's a lot of ways to win football games," said Kansas coach Lance Leipold, who led the Jayhawks to their first bowl game in more than a decade last season behind an increasingly popular version of the run-pass style called the wide zone.

"If you got a system and you hold your kids accountable," Leipold said, "and have some structure and a philosophy, you have a chance to go out there and win some football games."

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Brent Rooker hit a two-run home run off Dylan Coleman in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Oakland Athletics a 6-4 win over the Kansas City Royals on Monday night in a matchup of teams with the worst records in the major leagues.

Zack Gelof, Jordan Diaz and Shea Langeliers also went deep for the MLB-worst Athletics (35-90), who snapped a three-game skid and won for the second time in 10 games.

(AP) — Brent Rooker hit a two-run home run off Dylan Coleman in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Oakland Athletics a 6-4 win over the Kansas City Royals on Monday night in a matchup of teams with the worst records in the major leagues.Zack Gelof, Jordan Diaz and Shea Langeliers also went deep for the MLB-worst Athletics (35-90), who snapped a three-game skid and won for the second time in 10 games.The home run enabled Rooker to attend a concert by country star Zach Bryan before it ended next door at the Oakland Arena, former home of the Golden State Warriors.“Rook has been swinging the bat pretty well (as) of late,” A’s manager Mark Kotsay said. “I know he really wanted to get to this concert. He took it in his own hands. "The A’s led most of the game, but squandered a 4-2 lead in the eighth when the Royals scored twice off Lucas Erceg, tying the game.Kansas City had another runner in scoring position when Michael Massey singled and appeared to steal second with two outs. Massey was initially ruled safe, but the call was overturned after video replay, ending the inning.Ryan Noda, just activated off the disabled list, led off the ninth and was hit by a pitch from Coleman (0-2). Rooker then slammed a 2-0 slider into the seats in left field for his second game-ending homer of the season.“I’m just looking for something in the middle to put a swing on,” Rooker said. “I know kind of (Coleman’s) pitch-movement profile, I knew where the ball needed to start for it to be hittable. It started in that window and I put a good swing on it.”The Athletics won in front of their fifth-smallest crowd of the season (3,095) and avoided falling 56 games under .500 for the first time since 1920.Bobby Witt Jr. hit his 25th home run for Kansas City. The Royals (40-87) have dropped six of seven.Gelof broke a 1-1 tie when he crushed a first-pitch slider from Alec Marsh over the wall in center leading off the third. It was Gelof’s sixth home run this month and ninth in his first 32 games, making Oakland’s hard-hitting rookie the quickest player in franchise history to reach that mark.Gelof entered the game tied for fourth in the major leagues with 12 extra-base hits in August, and was fifth in batting average (.385).“He’s really, really, really good,” Rooker said. “He just continues to impress. He has some of the most backside power I think I’ve seen. He’s got a really bright future ahead of him.”Kotsay has been equally impressed with the rookie second baseman, who has been one of the A’s top hitters since being called up from the minors in mid-July.“This kid comes to play every day,” Kotsay said. “He continues to set records, open eyes and make a statement that he belongs.”After Witt’s solo home run off starter Paul Blackburn in the sixth trimmed Oakland’s lead to 3-2, Langeliers countered in the bottom of the frame with his 12th home run, a 456-foot drive.Trevor May (4-4), the fifth — and last — pitcher used by the A’s, retired three batters and earned the win.FOR STARTERSThe Royals used Tucker Davidson as an opener in the game and he became the 20th starting pitcher the Royals have used this season, a franchise record and two more than the A’s (18).Blackburn had six strikeouts, four looking, and allowed two runs on four hits in six innings. He left with a 4-2 lead.“It was one of those days where I felt like I was executing well all day,” Blackburn said. “Even that home run that Witt hit was a good pitch. Sometimes good players hit good pitches.”TRAINER’S ROOMRoyals: 1B Nick Pratto went hitless in two at-bats with two walks in a rehab game with Triple-A Omaha on Sunday. Pratto has been on the injured list with a left groin strain and has missed 23 games. RHP Brad Keller (right shoulder impingement) allowed two runs and two hits in one inning during his first rehab outing with Double-A Northwest Arkansas.Athletics: 1B Ryan Noda was activated off the IL where he’s been since mid-July with a fractured jaw. RHP Spencer Patton was called up from Triple-A Las Vegas. RHP Luis Medina (blister) was put on the 15-day injured list retroactive to Aug. 19. C Tyler Soderstrom was optioned to Las Vegas. RHP James Kaprielian was transferred to the 60-day injured list.UP NEXTRoyals LHP Angel Zerpa (1-1, 6.08 ERA) will make his second start of the season in his first career appearance against the A’s on Tuesday. Zerpa’s other start this year was last Thursday when he had six strikeouts and allowed one run and five hits in four innings. The A’s have not named a starter.
