🏈 KSHSAA releases 2024-25 district assignments

(AP) After winning their Wild Card Series openers on the first day of Major League Baseball's playoffs, the Texas Rangers, Minnesota Twins, Arizona Diamondbacks and Philadelphia Phillies can advance to the next round with victories Wednesday.

As is often the case when postseason play rolls around, pitching was king Tuesday.

None of the four teams that won gave up more than three runs. Minnesota and Philadelphia allowed just one, while&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/montgomery-rangers-rays-al-wild-card-2000263cc9535fe150c15808196ea8dc">Jordan Montgomery and two relievers combined on Texas' shutout at Tampa Bay.</a>

Nathan Eovaldi (12-5) starts Wednesday for the Rangers as they try to wrap up the best-of-three series against Zach Eflin (16-8) and the Rays, who have dropped six straight playoff games dating to 2021.

Zack Wheeler tossed 6 2/3 splendid innings&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/phillies-marlins-wheeler-harper-castellanos-877eb010bfb362377ffedb98bc889c80">to lead defending NL champion Philadelphia to a 4-1 victory over the upstart Miami Marlins.</a>&nbsp;Aaron Nola (12-9) pitches Game 2 for the Phillies against Braxton Garrett (9-7).

Pablo López and four relievers held George Springer, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and the Toronto Blue Jays in check as the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/blue-jays-twins-postseason-streak-ends-a836f2fbd9ee0f9ce80aad19173b2590">Twins snapped a record 18-game postseason losing streak with a 3-1 win.</a>

Sonny Gray (8-8, 2.79 ERA) goes in Game 2 for Minnesota against José Berríos (11-12, 3.65), who was traded by the Twins to Toronto in July 2021.

Arizona got 6 1/3 scoreless innings from its bullpen and erased an early three-run deficit&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/wild-card-arizona-diamondbacks-milwaukee-brewers-ebcc0ee439d65edd8872743a5bdd2730">in a 6-3 victory at Milwaukee.</a>&nbsp;Now the Diamondbacks have ace Zac Gallen (17-9) lined up to face Freddy Peralta (12-10) on Wednesday.

The Braves are the current betting favorites to win the World Series at +270, followed by the Dodgers (+420) and Astros (+450),&nbsp;<a href="https://sportsbook.fanduel.com/">according to FanDuel Sportsbook</a>.

<a href="https://apnews.com/article/twins-royce-lewis-alds-home-runs-c77b2944cedd5e2f4ac622720391f038">Royce Lewis homered in his first two postseason at-bats</a>&nbsp;for Minnesota. He had been sidelined for two weeks with a strained left hamstring.

“It was the most nervous game, exciting game, I’ve ever played in my life,” he said. “It was so much fun.”

The 24-year-old Lewis became the third player in major league history to go deep in his first two postseason plate appearances, following Evan Longoria for Tampa Bay in 2008 and Gary Gaetti for the Twins in 1987, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

Lewis was selected by the Twins with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2017 amateur draft, but the start of his major league career has been interrupted by injuries. He tore the ACL in his right knee during an offseason workout in 2021 and again last year just 12 games into his Twins debut. Maintaining his rookie status in 2023, Lewis&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/twins-royce-lewis-grand-slams-a1b26596c52dbfe2282e7ac63b1a66a3">never missed a beat</a>.

“He’s truly a special talent, the type of talent that can carry you to win a lot of ballgames when the postseason comes,” teammate Carlos Correa said.

The playoff opener between Texas and Tampa Bay drew an announced crowd of just 19,704 to Tropicana Field,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/rays-rangers-attendance-6ffec4b2da65983c24ecf0e24be5c3b0">the lowest for a postseason game since the 1919 World Series</a>&nbsp;other than during the coronavirus pandemic, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

The crowd was roughly 5,300 below the listed capacity of Tropicana Field.

Meanwhile,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/rays-retro-uniforms-playoffs-e172a8e116755d28f66ca249159b589e">the Rays went retro for Game 1.</a>

Sporting throwback Devil Rays jerseys the team wore during a decade of futility, Tampa Bay was limited to six hits and committed four errors in a 4-0 loss.

“It was a frustrating game,” manager Kevin Cash said. “I don’t recall us playing a game like that in quite some time.”

It was the first time Tampa Bay, which began play as an expansion franchise in 1998, wore Devil Rays jerseys in the postseason.

Batting third in Arizona's lineup, Tommy Pham went 0 for 4 with a walk. He struck out twice and scored once.

<a href="https://apnews.com/article/arizona-diamondbacks-tommy-pham-e86ff2fc10647f1860b903fb18763723">The veteran outfielder has been dealing with turf toe,</a>&nbsp;which has limited him to designated hitter most of the past two weeks.

Pham said he would “probably get an injection to help that out” before Game 1 against the Brewers.

“This is the first time that I’ve ever had turf toe,” Pham said. “Quite honestly, I didn’t even know what was going on. I thought it was my cleats, so I’ve been switching out cleats. Then it just gradually got worse and worse, so here I am.”

The wild-card rounds will be broadcast on ABC, ESPN and ESPN. The later rounds will be split among Fox, FS1 and TBS.

ELKHORN, Nebraska – The final round of the Big O Classic on Tuesday was a tough one for the Hutchinson Community College men's golf team on Tuesday at Indian Creek Golf Club.

Entering the final round with a three-stroke lead, the Blue Dragons suffered through a rough final 18 holes and finished eighth overall with a 54-hole team score of 893, 15 strokes off the pace of team champion Omaha.

The Blue Dragons posted a 22-over par 310 on Tuesday in tough scoring conditions. In addition to high winds, the final round was stopped three times because of lightning.

Freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mgolf/2023-24/bios/box_charlie_jgcb">Charlie Box</a>&nbsp;shot the low Blue Dragon round on Tuesday with a 3-over 75. The Dragons also counted&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mgolf/2023-24/bios/razinskas_david_7wz3">David Razinskas</a>' 77,&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mgolf/2023-24/bios/ross_louis_dfpl">Louis Ross</a>' 78 and&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mgolf/2023-24/bios/malin_harry_xtfj">Harry Malin</a>'s 80.

Ross, who entered the final day in the individual lead, finished in a fifth-place tie at 2-over 218.

DE PERE, Wis. (AP) — John Gordon, an artist who as a young art student helped design the Green Bay Packers' distinctive “G” team logo, has died at age 83.

Gordon died Saturday, said Matt Cotter, the owner of Cotter Funeral &amp; Cremation Care in De Pere, Wisconsin. The funeral home posted an&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cotterfuneralhome.com/obituaries/John-Michael-Gordon?obId=29356157#/obituaryInfo">obituary</a>&nbsp;which says Gordon died “surrounded by his family after living with Alzheimer’s disease.”

Gordon was an art student at St. Norbert College in 1961 and was working as an assistant for Packers equipment manager Gerald “Dad” Braisher when he was offered the chance to design the team's logo under then-coach Vince Lombardi,&nbsp;<a href="https://fox11online.com/sports/packers-and-nfl/st-norbert-professor-who-designed-original-packers-g-logo-dies-at-83">WLUK-TV</a>&nbsp;reported.

“Dad came down from his meeting with (Vince) Lombardi with a piece of paper in his hand, and he said that Lombardi wants a logo ... and it’s going to be a ‘G’ in a football shape,” Gordon said in a video produced 10 years ago by St. Norbert College.

Within 24 hours, Gordon’s sketched design was approved and the Packers’ original logo was born.

“John lent his talent to the Packer organization and helped design the `Packer G,'” Gordon's obituary states.

Gordon's name and his sketch are featured in a display at the Packers Hall of Fame museum at Lambeau Field, said Packers curator Brent Hensel.

The original “G” as designed by Gordon was shaped like a football, but it has been modified over the years to the current oval “G."

Despite the popular belief that the “G” stands for greatness, it in fact stands for Green Bay, Packers team historian Cliff Christl wrote in&nbsp;<a href="https://www.packers.com/news/the-g-stands-for-green-bay-15940711">a 2015 article on the Packers’ website</a>.

Gordon was a lifelong artist who taught art at Parkview Middle School in Ashwaubenon before becoming an adjunct professor of art at his alma mater, St. Norbert College.

His survivors include his wife, Dianne, his ex-wife, Joan Gordon, and their six children, three grandchildren, a brother and sister and three stepchildren.

Gordon's funeral is scheduled for Wednesday at Faith Lutheran Church in Green Bay.

Hutchinson running back Tyrell Reed Jr. was named the Offensive Player of the Week. Dodge City defensive back Bobby Arnold III was the Defensive Player of the Week. Highland kicker Adonis Coyle was the league's Special Teams Player of the Week.

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK - Tyrell Reed Jr., Hutchinson Reed had his second 100-yard game of the season and helped the No. 1 Blue Dragons rush for a season-high 354 yards in a 43-16 victory at No. 10 Butler. Reed ran 23 times for 117 yards and three touchdowns of 5, 14 and 25 yards. His is the first Blue Dragon back with three rushing touchdowns in one game since Dylan Kedzior last season against Butler. A key piece to the defense was Bobby Arnold III who had the second most tackles with nine and had a Pick-Six with an interception returned 33 yards for a touchdown. Velázquez recorded 20 hits in his 23 games from Sept. 1-30, and 12 of those hits (60.0%) went for extra bases, including 3 doubles and a team-high 9 home runs. His 9 home runs last month tied for the 3rd most by a Royal ever in the month of September, behind only&nbsp;Salvador Perez’s&nbsp;10 home runs in 2021 and&nbsp;Jorge Soler’s&nbsp;10 homers in 2019. His 9 home runs also tied for the American League lead and ranked tied for 5th in the Majors, trailing&nbsp;Ronald Acuña Jr.&nbsp;(11),&nbsp;Matt Olson&nbsp;(11),&nbsp;Kyle Schwarber&nbsp;(10) and&nbsp;Juan Soto&nbsp;(10). Hutchinson Community College freshman forward Katharina Marx had an eight-point week to lift the No. 13 Blue Dragons to a pair of Jayhawk Conference victories last week. In a 4-1 win over Garden City, Marx had two goals and an assist for a five-point game against the Broncbusters. At Seward County on Saturday, she had a goal and an assist. Marx for the season has 10 goals and eight assists. Marx is fifth in the KJCCC in goals scored and leads the league in assists.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs proved with Sunday night's win over the New York Jets that they still have some championship attributes, even if they have a whole lot of problems to fix. Patrick Mahomes was far from his best, throwing two ugly interceptions. His wide receivers rarely got open, penalties continued to be a problem and the Kansas City defense struggled against embattled Jets QB Zach Wilson. Yet the Chiefs found a way to squeak out a 23-20 victory, just as they did so often in last season's Super Bowl-winning run. The Angels announced Monday that they have declined their option on Nevin’s contract for the 2024 season. Los Angeles will have its fourth manager in six years since the departure of Mike Scioscia, who held the job for 19 years. Nevin went 119-149 in his first major league managerial job while both of his teams missed the playoffs. He was promoted to the Angels’ top job in June 2022 when Joe Maddon was fired in the middle of a 14-game losing streak.

AMES, Iowa (AP) — An Iowa State football player accused of illegal sports wagering has had his case dismissed and faces no more legal action. A Story County judge granted the prosecution’s motion on Monday to dismiss a misdemeanor tampering with records charge against tight end DeShawn Hanika because the state waited too long to indict him. Hanika’s attorneys originally asked for the dismissal and prosecutors agreed because Hanika was not indicted within 45 days after he waived a preliminary trial, as state law requires. The deadline was Sept. 24. He was not indicted until Sept. 28.

UNDATED (AP) — Two injured West Virginia football players who were taken to a hospital during a game in Texas are set to return to campus. Coach Neal Brown says linebacker Trey Lathan and safety Aubrey Burks are scheduled to fly back on Tuesday. Both were carted off the field during a 24-21 win at TCU on Saturday. Lathan underwent surgery on a lower-leg injury and will miss the rest of the season. Brown says tests were negative on Burks, who was injured making a tackle. Brown didn’t specify Burks’ injury and didn't know when he’ll be available to play again. The Mountaineers are off this week and play at Houston on Oct. 12.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs beat the Jets in spite of themselves on Sunday night in New York.

Patrick Mahomes was at his worst (until he was at his best). Penalties continued to be a problem, including one that resulted in a momentum-swinging safety.

Wide receivers were incapable of getting open, a persistent problem through the first four weeks of the season. And what had been their strength — their defense, of all things — struggled against, of all people, Zach Wilson, the Jets quarterback whom many fans wanted to see benched a week ago.

Perhaps that is the mark of a championship team, though: The Chiefs overcame all that for a 23-20 victory.

Or perhaps it is a sign of a championship team that has a whole lot to fix.

“It's football. It's the NFL. Not everything is going to be easy,” said Mahomes, who threw for just 203 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions. “You have to find a way to win different ways and I've learned that over my career.”

The Chiefs (3-1) certainly proved that last season.

You see, the perception is the Chiefs have won seven consecutive AFC West titles, hosted five straight AFC title games and been to three Super Bowls in the past four years because they are a high-scoring juggernaut that simply mows over the opposition.

The reality is Andy Reid's group simply finds ways to win. They went 14-3 last season by winning half those games by six points or fewer, and they trailed the Eagles 24-14 at halftime of the Super Bowl before rallying for a 35-31 victory.

"I think to be a world champion you have to be able to win a lot of different styles, and every game is going to be different," said Chiefs linebacker Drue Tranquill, who watched Kansas City from the opposite side as a member of the Chargers last season.

“Last week, we jumped out to a big lead against Chicago and we were able to hold onto that," Tranquill continued, "and kind of make them one-dimensional on offense. This week, we jump out to a big lead, suddenly their defense blows up, gets a safety. We’re on our heels. Pat throws a couple interceptions. They get a couple turnovers playing good ball on defense and now we’re forced in a tough game, close game there in the fourth quarter.”

Sounds as if Tranquill believes both things are true: The Chiefs are a championship team because of their ability to win ugly, yet they have a whole lot of issues to work out if they want to defend that Super Bowl title.

“I’ve learned in my six or seven years, you can win pretty, but you have to win ugly, too, in order to win Super Bowls,” Mahomes said. “For me, even though I hate it while it’s happening, I felt like it makes you better in the end if you win games like this, where not everything’s going perfect. So, we did that last year and we’re going to try to do that again this year, and then try to keep getting better so we’re playing our best football at the end of the season.”

Isiah Pacheco ran 20 times for 115 yards, and while a big chunk came on a 48-yard touchdown run, many were the tough, got-to-have-them variety in crucial situations. He has proven to be the ideal running back for Reid's offense.

The Chiefs did not get enough pass rush from their front seven against New York. They rarely pressured Wilson, who threw for 245 yards and two scores, and one of their two sacks came from Mike Edwards on a safety blitz.

Trent McDuffie continues to develop into one of the league's top cornerbacks. He was frequently tasked with Jets star Garrett Wilson, who hauled in nine passes on 14 targets but was limited to just 60 yards.

The entire Kansas City wide receiver group has been an abject disappointment. Their inability to get open, let along produce big plays, has repeatedly hamstrung drives. Kadarius Toney had the only two catches by any wideouts in the first 40-plus minutes in New York, and the group finished with seven catches for 65 yards in all.

Nick Bolton missed his second game with a sprained ankle. The linebacker's ability to get the defense into the proper alignment was sorely missing Sunday night, along with his uncanny ability to fill gaps and track down pass plays in the flat.

200 — The Chiefs had 200 yards in the first quarter Sunday night, their fourth-best offensive output in a first quarter since 1991. Problem was they managed just 201 yards the entire rest of the game.

The Chiefs complete a two-game road swing next Sunday against the Vikings, whom they've beaten three of the past four times they have played. Minnesota (1-3) defeated winless Carolina on Sunday for its first win of the season.

The victory was the sixth win of the season for Kansas and secured KU its first bowl berth since 2009.

This will mark KU’s first appearance on FS1 during the 2023 season and ninth overall during head coach Lance Leipold’s tenure. The Jayhawks were 2-2 in games televised on FS1 last season, including the victory over OSU in Lawrence.

MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;–&nbsp;The Big 12 Conference and FOX Sports announced Monday that Kansas State’s October 14 contest at Texas Tech will kick at 6 p.m., and be televised by FS1.

K-State will be in search of its eighth-straight win over the Red Raiders and fourth-straight victory in Lubbock. The Wildcats hold the longest winning streak by either team in the 23-game series, while they have won 11 of the last 12 matchups dating back to 2011.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs shook off a subpar performance during which they blew a 17-point lead, but held on to defeat the New York Jets 23-20. Mahomes was intercepted twice and struggled to get much going after a quick start with pop superstar Taylor Swift watching Travis Kelce and the Chiefs for the second straight game, this time from a suite at MetLife Stadium. Michael Carter II intercepted Mahomes on third-and-20 but it was negated by a holding call on Sauce Gardner. Mahomes ran for 9 yards on third down to the Jets 2 to seal the victory.

Frustrated fans booed in disgust, knowing the game just turned on a questionable call. With the Kansas City Chiefs up by three points and looking to put away a win Sunday night, Michael Carter II intercepted Patrick Mahomes’ deep pass intended for Marquez Valdes-Scantling. But Sauce Gardner was called for defensive holding on the play, giving the ball back to Mahomes and the Chiefs and they worked the clock the rest of the way to hold on for a 23-20 victory.

CHICAGO (AP) — The Denver Broncos came in reeling from a 50-point blowout and looked like they were headed toward another lopsided loss. Wilson threw for three touchdowns, Wil Lutz kicked a tiebreaking field goal with just under two minutes remaining and the Broncos bounced back from one of the most lopsided losses in franchise history by rallying to beat the Chicago Bears 31-28 on Sunday. Denver (1-3) was coming off a 70-20 blowout by Miami that was the franchise’s second-worst loss of the Super Bowl era, behind only a 51-0 pounding by the Raiders in 1967. Lutz’s 51-yarder capped a comeback from a 28-7, third-quarter deficit. Kareem Jackson then intercepted Justin Fields with the Bears (0-4) near midfield, and coach Sean Payton picked up his first win with Denver.

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — DaRon Bland returned one of his two interceptions for a touchdown, Leighton Vander Esch scooped up a fumble for a score and the Dallas Cowboys blew out the New England Patriots 38-3. Mac Jones was responsible for all three turnovers and was pulled in the second half of Bill Belichick's worst loss in 29 seasons as a head coach. The Cowboys spoiled former star running back Ezekiel Elliott’s Dallas homecoming with their 10th consecutive home victory.

PHOENIX (AP) — MLB’s postseason bracket is set, with the American League and National League wild-card matchups beginning Tuesday. It’s the second year for the new October format, which includes an opening round, best-of-three series with all of the games at the higher seed’s ballpark. In the AL, the No. 6 seed Toronto Blue Jays will face the No. 3 Minnesota Twins and the No. 5 Texas Rangers travel to the No. 4 Tampa Bay Rays. Michael King took the loss for New York, allowing a trio of homers among eight hits that yielded four runs in four innings. The Royals went 56-106, matching the franchise record for losses in a season. The Yankees finished 82-80, their worst record since going 76-86 in 1992.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Adam Wainwright made one final appearance in his 18-year big league career, striking out as a pinch hitter in the St. Louis Cardinals’ 4-3 season-ending win over the Cincinnati Reds. Cincinnati first baseman Joey Votto, playing perhaps his final game with the Reds, struck out in the first inning, then was ejected before the top of the second by plate umpire Shane Livensparger. Wainwright, a 42-year-old right-hander, went 200-128 with a 3.53 ERA in 18 major league seasons, all with the Cardinals. He got his 200th win in in his final pitching appearance against Milwaukee on Sept. 18.

DENVER (AP) — The Minnesota Twins were so ready to turn the page to playoff baseball. Hence, the decision to send an outfielder to the mound in an extra-inning game. Brenton Doyle scored from second base on a wild pitch in the 11th inning by outfielder-turned-pitcher Jordan Luplow, and the Colorado Rockies rallied for a 3-2 win over the playoff-bound Twins on Sunday in the regular-season finale. On deck for the the AL Central champion Twins: a best-of-three playoff series against Toronto starting Tuesday at Target Field.

NEW YORK (AP) — Buck Showalter was fired as New York Mets manager after a disappointing season in which baseball’s highest-spending team tumbled from contention by midsummer. The 67-year-old Showalter said before Sunday’s game against Philadelphia that he will not return next year, and a few minutes later the fourth-place Mets said the team had decided on the change. New York entered 74-86 and 29 1/2 games behind NL East champion Atlanta. The Mets are expected to hire David Stearns as president of baseball operations above general manager Billy Eppler, and Showalter’s departure with a year remaining on his three-year contract clears the way for Stearns to pick the next manager. Showalter’s exit leaves the Mets searching for a new manager for the fifth time in six years.
