AP Sports Summary for September 15th:
Branson Robinson runs for 3-yard go-ahead touchdown, top-ranked Georgia rallies past Kentucky 13-12
LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) — Branson Robinson rushed for a 3-yard, go-ahead touchdown early in the fourth quarter, and top-ranked Georgia overcame a lethargic performance to rally past and then hold off Kentucky 13-12. The Bulldogs trailed 9-3 early in the third but got within three on Peyton Woodring's 30-yard field goal before mounting their longest drive of the night. Trevor Etienne's 12-yard run, 11-yard pass reception and 8-yard rush got the Bulldogs to the Kentucky 29. The Florida transfer then broke right for a 17-yard run to the 11, stepping out of bounds as he tip-toed down the sideline trying to reach the end zone. Robinson took it in from there three plays later for Georgia's first lead.
Arch Manning takes over for injured Quinn Ewers, leads No. 2 Texas to 56-7 rout of UTSA
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Arch Manning passed for four touchdowns and ran 67 yards for another after taking over for injured starter Quinn Ewers in the second quarter to lead No. 2 Texas over UTSA 56-7 on Saturday night. Texas led 14-0 when Ewers left with what coach Steve Sarkisian said was a strained abdomen. Manning threw a 19-yard touchdown to DeAndre Moore on his first play, then broke off the long sprint for another touchdown on Texas' next possession. Manning finished with 223 yards passing.
Canelo Alvarez wins unanimous decision in dominating title defense against Edgar Berlanga
LAS VEGAS (AP) — Undisputed super middleweight champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez outpointed challenger Edgar Berlanga on Saturday night in front of a sold-out crowd at T-Mobile Arena. Making his eighth super middleweight title defense, the 34-year-old Alvarez (61-2-2) dominated much of the fight, using his experience and tenacious pursuit to wear down his 27-year-old challenger, frequently sending 20,312 fans into a frenzy, often chanting "Mexico!" or "CA-NEL-O!" Berlanga lost for the first time in his career, dropping to 22-1-0.
Washington State reclaims Apple Cup with late stand to top Washington 24-19
SEATTLE (AP) — John Mateer ran for two touchdowns and threw for one more, Washington State made a goal line stand with 1:07 remaining, and the Cougars reclaimed the Apple Cup with a 24-19 win over Washington. Playing in September rather than November or December, and meeting in a non-conference matchup for the first time since 1961, the Cougars relied on their dual-threat quarterback and some key defensive plays in the final moments to claim the Apple Cup for just the third time since 2008. Mateer ran for touchdowns of 23 and 25 yards and threw a 16-yard touchdown to Josh Meredith in the third quarter that gave the Cougars a 24-16 lead. Mateer finished 17 of 34 passing for 245 yards and added 62 yards rushing.
Dillon Gabriel leads No. 9 Oregon to 49-14 win over rival Oregon State
CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) — Dillon Gabriel threw for 291 yards and two touchdowns, and ran for 64 yards with another score, to lead No. 9 Oregon to a 49-14 victory over Oregon State on Saturday. Jordan James had 12 carries for 86 yards and two touchdowns, and the Ducks improved to 3-0 in their first Big Ten season after the demise of the Pac-12. It was the 128th meeting in the rivalry between the two former conference foes. Oregon State fell to 2-1 with the loss.
Nelly Korda and the U.S. keep rolling in the Solheim Cup and lead Europe 10-6
GAINESVILLE, Va. (AP) — Top-ranked Nelly Korda improved to 3-0 in this year's Solheim Cup and helped the Americans maintain a four-point advantage over Europe heading into Sunday singles. Korda won her morning alternate-shot match with Allisen Corpuz. They became the first American duo to go 4-0 in the format. Rose Zhang and Lauren Coughlin have also won three matches apiece. Europe won the last two matches Saturday afternoon to get within 10-6 and prevent a rout. But the Europeans will need their largest-ever final-day comeback to capture the Solheim Cup for a record fourth consecutive time.
Playoff drivers are on edge as NASCAR moves to the second round at Watkins Glen
WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. (AP) — Joey Logano won the Cup Series playoff opener last weekend at Atlanta Motor Speedway and the automatic spot in the second round that came with the victory, making him about the only driver feeling great this weekend at Watkins Glen International. As for the other 15 drivers in the playoff field, it's a combination of nerves and the harsh reality that a championship bid can come closer to the end. There's even a little bit of hope that a checked flag can keep that bid alive. Brad Keselowski, Harrison Burton, Martin Truex Jr. and Chase Briscoe are the final four drivers. Truex starts second in Sunday's Cup race.
Messi returns and scores twice as Inter Miami defeats Union 3-1
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — Lionel Messi made a successful return after a lengthy absence, scoring two goals and assisting on the third to lead Inter Miami to a 3-1 victory over the Philadelphia Union. The Argentine star winger and eight-time Ballon d'Or winner had not played with Inter Miami since June 1 because of national team commitments and a right ankle injury sustained in a victory over Colombia in the Copa America final on July 14. Messi scored twice in a four-minute span midway through the first half that negated an early goal by Philadelphia. Without Messi, Miami went 8-2 and clinched an MLS playoff spot.
England could be barred from UEFA competitions if new regulator's powers are not 'strictly limited'
MANCHESTER, England (AP) — England and English soccer teams could be removed from UEFA competitions if a new regulator is considered to be "Government interference" in the sport. In a letter sent by UEFA to the U.K.'s new culture secretary Lisa Nandy, European soccer's governing body raised concerns about a proposed independent football regulator (IFR) in English soccer, which is intended to ensure the financial sustainability of clubs and stop teams from joining breakaway competitions like the European Super League. UEFA regulations state there should be no government interference in the running of soccer.
Champions League starts bigger new era with Mbappé at Madrid and rematches of past finals
GENEVA (AP) — The new Champions League format starts Tuesday after more than six years of planning, one failed proposal and one Super League launch fiasco. Storied clubs that pushed UEFA for change and created turmoil in European soccer got most of what they wanted. There are more teams, more games and more of them against strong opponents, more money. On opening night, Kylian Mbappé starts his quest for a first Champions League title with his third club when Real Madrid hosts Stuttgart. AC Milan plays Liverpool in a history-laden pairing and Manchester City hosts Inter Milan in a rematch of the 2023 final.
