KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs plan to explore options that include leaving Arrowhead Stadium after voters in Jackson County, Missouri, soundly rejected a sales tax initiative that would have helped to pay for renovations to the 52-year-old building.

The Chiefs and Royals, whose Kauffman Stadium shares the Truman Sports Complex with the football stadium, have relied on a three-eighths cent sales tax for upkeep. The franchises wanted to extend that tax with the Royals using their share of the money for a new downtown ballpark and the Chiefs envisioning an $800 million renovation of Arrowhead.

More than 58% of voters rejected the sales tax initiative after the campaign was met with criticism from all sides.

“Time is short for us at this point and so we need to see what other options are out there for us,″ Chiefs owner Clark Hunt said Saturday. “When we started on this process three years ago, it felt like we had a very long time — a long runway with about 9 1/2 (years) left on our lease. We’re now down to 6 1/2 and so I do feel very much of a sense of urgency."

Hunt, whose father Lamar founded the Chiefs and helped to get Kauffman and Arrowhead stadiums built, has always preferred to renovate a stadium that his father called one of his favorite places in the world. The Hunt family had promised to spend $300 million in private funds on the renovation with the remainder coming from public funding.

Now, the Chiefs are left to consider overtures from other locations. One of those could be just across the state line, where public officials in Kansas have made it clear that they would love to have the Chiefs on their side of the border.

“Stadium development projects just take a long time," Hunt said, “and I don’t want to put a specific number on it, but with only 6 1/2 years left on the lease, we’re going to have to work very hard over the next year, year-and-a-half.”

Whatever direction the Chiefs go next, Hunt indicated they would head that way on their own, rather than be tied together with the Royals. That would give the NFL franchise greater latitude to seek the best financing package for itself, whether that means with a renovation of Arrowhead Stadium in mind or a completely new facility elsewhere.

“There’s certainly nothing to preclude us coming back and doing something together," Hunt said, "but (Royals owner John Sherman) also feels that sense of urgency and I know he’s eager to try to find a long-term solution, which we are as well.”

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs had two distinct holes on their roster as they headed into the offseason.

The two-time defending Super Bowl champions filled them with their first two picks in the NFL draft.

While every general manager talks about taking “the best player available,” and some make a surprising pick that goes against the grain, Brett Veach did exactly what was expected. The Chiefs' GM moved up modestly in the first round to take&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/chiefs-kansas-city-nfl-draft-281f23c4474ec86771102ddb941bcd45#:~:text=(AP)%20%E2%80%94%20The%20Kansas%20City,Hill%20was%20on%20the%20roster.">Texas burner Xavier Worthy</a>, instantly upgrading what was one of the league's worst wide receiving corps last year, then made another minor trade-up in Round 2 to take BYU's Kingsley Suamataia, potentially filling a glaring hole at left tackle.

“We just let the board play out and saw the value there,” Veach said.

Indeed, the Chiefs' draft board played out perfectly.

Worthy set the NFL combine record by running the 40-yard dash in 4.21 seconds, giving Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes a legitimate deep threat for the first time since they traded Tyreek Hill to the Dolphins. Worthy is also an underrated route-runner with sure hands, something the Chiefs lacked while leading the league in dropped passes.

The Chiefs hope Worthy can pair well with Marquise Brown, whom they signed in free agency, and Rashee Rice, whose future is up in the air while dealing with legal trouble stemming from a street racing crash in Texas.

“It doesn’t hurt to have down-the-field speed,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said. "We’ve functioned without the great speed down the field and done well, (but) if you have an opportunity to get somebody that you think is a good player — just not a speed guy but a good football player — I think you probably need to take advantage of that.”

The issue then becomes giving Mahomes time to get the ball to those guys, and that's where Suamataia comes into the picture.

Many scouts gave him a first-round grade, yet the 6-foot-5, 328-pound offensive tackle fell to Kansas City late in the second round, and he could start from Day 1. The Chiefs allowed Donovan Smith to reach free agency, so Suamataia will likely compete with Wanya Morris and Lucas Niang for the opportunity to protect Mahomes' blind side.

“If I do get the opportunity to be his blindside, shoot, that would mean the world to me,” Suamataia said. “I’m just ready to come in wherever I best fit on the team and just get it rolling from there.”

The Chiefs did not have a third-round selection, so they used their two fourth-rounders on less pressing holes at tight end and safety. Jared Wiley of TCU can be groomed for the day when Travis Kelce decides to hang up the cleats, while Jaden Hicks — ranked by some draft pundits as the No. 1 safety in the class — can provide immediate help in the secondary.

The Chiefs spent a fifth-rounder on Penn State's Hunter Nourzad, who played right tackle at Cornell before starting at center the past two seasons at Penn State. Creed Humphrey, a two-time Pro Bowl pick at center for Kansas City, had some problems with his snaps last season. Nourzad could push him or perhaps slide to guard, where Joe Thuney is coming off pectoral surgery.

The Chiefs chose Tennessee cornerback Kamal Hadden in the sixth round and hope he can follow a string of successful late-round picks at the position. Two years ago, they took regular contributors Josh Williams in the fourth round and Jaylen Watson in the seventh. Last year, fourth-rounder Chamarri Conner played a big role in their success.

Kansas City built one of the league's best defenses through the draft, using several high picks in recent years. But it used its first three selections this year to prop up the offense, then hit the defense in the later rounds.

The Chiefs could still use some depth at defensive tackle, where they brought back Chris Jones, Tershawn Wharton and Derrick Nnadi this offseason, and running back, where they brought back Clyde Edwards-Helaire to play behind Isiah Pacheco.

🏈 Chiefs address biggest concerns in NFL draft with selections of wide receiver and offensive tackle

DETROIT (AP) — Matt Vierling hit a three-run homer to highlight Detroit's five-run seventh inning and the Tigers beat Kansas City 6-5 Saturday night, ending the Royals' four-game winning streak.

“When I hit it, I didn't think it was going out,” said Vierling, whose 111-mph line drive had a 14-degree launch angle. “That's a big comeback win, so I was fired up.”

Trailing 3-1, Detroit rallied against Chris Stratton (2-2) in the seventh. After Jake Rogers walked, Riley Greene and Mark Canha singled, driving in Rogers.

Wenceel Perez flew out to the wall in right, allowing Greene to take third, and Kerry Carpenter tied the game with a base hit. After Spencer Torkelson popped out, Vierling lined Stratton's 1-2 sinker over the left-field fence to put the Tigers up 6-3.

“I left pitches over the middle,” Stratton said. “They are big league hitters and they did exactly what they are supposed to do.”

The Royals bullpen came into the game with a 2.12 ERA in its last 21 innings.

“Stratton's going to pitch big innings for us,” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. “Sometimes during those high-leverage situations, it doesn't go your way, but he's done this before and he'll bounce back.”

The Royals scored twice in the ninth off Tigers closer Jason Foley, but Vinnie Pasquatino flew out to deep center to end the game.

“I threw a four-seamer up and got him,” Foley said. “He's a really good hitter, so it felt great to get him out.”

The Tigers won despite four infield errors, two by Javier Báez.

“We can't keep winning games like that,” Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said. “The fight in this team is really good, but this is unsustainable. You give them extra outs, and then Foley is looking at (Bobby) Witt Jr. and Pasquatino in the ninth inning.”

Alex Faedo (2-1) got the win with two innings of relief of starter Casey Mize, who allowed three runs, two earned, in five innings.

Royals starter Brady Singer allowed one run in five innings.

The Royals only needed four batters to take a two-run lead. Maikel Garcia and Witt Jr. started the game with singles, with Garcia moving to third. After Witt stole second, Pasquatino made it 1-0 with a RBI groundout, and Salvador Perez followed with an RBI single. The base hit extended Perez's on-base streak to 17 games, matching his career high.

Kansas City made it 3-0 in the second with a pair of errors setting up Garcia's RBI single.

The Tigers got a run back in the bottom of the inning, and could have had more. Colt Keith walked and scored on Zach McKinstry's triple, but Singer got Báez and Rogers to ground out before striking out Greene to strand the runner.

The teams finish the weekend series on Sunday with Tigers' ace LHP Tarik Skubal (3-0, 1.82 ERA) facing RHP Michael Wacha (1-2, 3.81).

Celtics lead wire-to-wire in Miami, roll past Heat 104-84 for 2-1 lead in East series

MIAMI (AP) — Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown each scored 22 points, and the Boston Celtics soundly beat the Miami Heat 104-84 to a take a 2-1 lead in their Eastern Conference first-round playoff series on Saturday night. Tatum added 10 rebounds and six assists for the Celtics, who led Game 3 wire-to-wire and reclaimed the home-court edge that they lost when Miami won Game 2 in Boston. Kristaps Porzingis scored 18 and Derrick White scored 16 for the Celtics. Bam Adebayo scored 20 points for eighth-seeded Miami, which remains without starters Jimmy Butler and Terry Rozier because of injuries.

AP NFL draft grades: Bears earned highest mark after landing Caleb Williams and Rome Odunze

Some teams see an immediate impact from a draft class. Others have to wait on a return. The Houston Texans went from worst to first in their division last season after selecting quarterback C.J. Stroud and edge Will Anderson Jr. back to back with the second and third overall picks. The Carolina Panthers ended up with the worst record despite taking Bryce Young No. 1 overall so they have to be patient. The Chicago Bears are the leading contender to have a Texans-like turnaround after getting QB Caleb Williams with the first pick and wide receiver Rome Odunze at No. 9. The Arizona Cardinals, Philadelphia Eagles, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Washington Commanders also had excellent drafts.

Wyatt Johnston scores in OT, Stars beat Golden Knights 3-2 to cut series deficit to 2-1

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Wyatt Johnston scored his second goal of the game in overtime to give the Dallas Stars a 3-2 victory over Vegas on Saturday night, cutting the defending champion Golden Knights' series lead to 2-1. Johnston, who had a team-high eight shots, dragged the puck down the left side to the goal line, drawing goalie Logan Thompson into a low position, and beating him with a high shot 16:23 into the extra period. Miro Heiskanen also scored for the Stars, and Jake Oettinger made 32 saves. The Stars had lost six straight games against Vegas. Brayden McNabb and Jack Eichel scored for Vegas, and Thompson stopped a career-high 43 shots. Game 4 is Monday night in Las Vegas.

Marchand breaks team playoff goals mark, Bruins beat Maple Leafs 3-1 to move within win of advancing

TORONTO (AP) — Brad Marchand broke the Boston playoff goals record with his 56th and the Bruins beat the Toronto Maple Leafs 3-1 in Game 4 on Saturday night to move within a victory of advancing to the second round. Marchand also had an assist, James van Riemsdyk and David Pastrnak scored and Jeremy Swayman made 24 saves. Boston can wrap up the series Tuesday night at home. Mitch Marner scored for Toronto. Auston Matthews, the NHL goals leader in the regular season with 69, sat out the third period because of an illness that forced him to miss practice Friday. Ilya Samsonov started in goal for Toronto, stopping 14 of 17 shots in the first two periods, and Joseph Woll made five saves in the third.

Jalen Williams and Josh Giddey each scored 21 for the Thunder. Top-seeded Oklahoma City hit 17 of 36 shots from 3-point range and led by as many as 24 in the fourth quarter. (AP) — Former BYU teammates Patrick Fishburn and Zach Blair shot a 12-under 60 in better-ball play Saturday to take the third-round lead in the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, the PGA Tour's only team event. At 23-under 193, Fishburn and Blair had a one-stroke lead over Luke List and Henrik Norlander, with the Irish duo of Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry — tied for the lead after each of the first two rounds — two strokes back. Fishburn and Blair, both winless on the PGA Tour, have been playing golf together since their junior high school days in Ogden, Utah. List and Norlander had a 62. Four strokes ahead entering the day after rounds of 64 and 66, Kim was tied with fellow Australian Hannah Green, the defending champion who saved par with a 12-footer on the par-3 18th for a 70. They were at 7-under 206.

FORT WORTH, Texas —K-State secured a historic 6-3 victory in the series finale to salvage Saturday's doubleheader, after TCU's come-from-behind win in game one, 7-4, at Lupton Stadium.

The victory handed the Wildcats their first win in Fort Worth over the Horned Frogs in Big 12 play in school history. The win also marked the first true road victory over TCU since 1987, snapping a 14-game losing streak in Fort Worth.

"That was a long challenging day with a quick turnaround after a night game," said head coach&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/baseball/roster/coaches/pete-hughes/2461">Pete Hughes</a>&nbsp;following K-State's historic triumph.

In game one, K-State (26-17, 10-11 Big 12) held a 12-7 advantage in hits over TCU (26-16, 10-14 Big 12), including multiple hit efforts from five different Wildcats.

"We had a strong relief appearance from [<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/baseball/roster/blake-dean/11520">Blake Dean</a>], which helped protect our bullpen for game two," Hughes commented.&nbsp;

Dean retired 14 of the 19 batters he faced in his season-long 4 2/3 innings after reliving starter&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/baseball/roster/jackson-wentworth/11477">Jackson Wentworth</a>, who struck out five in his second start of the season. The freshman from Acworth, Ga., scattered three hits in his 18th outing&nbsp;and allowed one earned run with three strikeouts.

"[<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/baseball/roster/owen-boerema/11457">Owen Boerema</a>] delivered a great start in a must-win game while [<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/baseball/roster/tyson-neighbors/11470">Tyson Neighbors</a>]' extended outing was dominant and kept us in control."

A native of Litchfield, Minn., Boerema tossed four no-hit innings and picked up his fourth win of the season (4-3). The lefty finished his start surrendering three runs, all earned, on six hits in 5 2/3 innings of work.

Neighbors took over for Boerema and tossed 3 1/3 shutout frames, giving up two hits while racking up four strikeouts for his 15th&nbsp;career save and fourth of the season.

After driving in a pair of runs in game one, Culpepper lifted a two-run homer in the third and followed with a two-RBI double in the fifth. The Cats' starting shortstop finished the weekend series hitting a team-best .545 (6-for-11) with an incredible 1.552 OPS.

"Culpepper picked us up all day long both in the field and at the plate and came through with some clutch hits."

Freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/baseball/roster/nick-english/11522">Nick English</a>, who went 5-for-9 on the day with four runs scored, turned in his 17th&nbsp;double of the season in game one to match the freshmen class single-season doubles record. The K-State record was set by current Major Leaguer Nick Martini in 2009.

With two stolen bases in the series,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/baseball/roster/brendan-jones/11466">Brendan Jones</a>&nbsp;moved to fourth in the K-State all-time career leaderboard with 61, tying Tim Decker (1993-95). Jones has stolen a career-high 31 bases this season, which is fourth in the single-season records. &nbsp;

<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/baseball/roster/chuck-ingram/11526">Chuck Ingram</a>, Culpepper, and Jones each belted a home run Saturday to bring the season total to 54.&nbsp;

In two games, K-State hit .357 (10-for-28) with runners on base and was 2-for-17 (.118) with runners in scoring position. Both squads hit .200 (4-for-20) with two outs on the day.

The Wildcats struck first in the opening frame with a 2-0 lead, started off with a lead-off single from Jones. The Cats' starting centerfielder advanced to second on a bunted single by English until the duo executed a double steal and moved into scoring position.

&nbsp; TCU's starter Louis Rodriguez issued a walk to&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/baseball/roster/brady-day/11461">Brady Day</a>&nbsp;to load the bases before a grounder to second pushed K-State's first run of the series across the plate. Designated hitter&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/baseball/roster/danniel-rivera/11532">Danniel Rivera</a>&nbsp;lifted a fly ball into right center to double that Cats' lead.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Frogs brought the game within one in the bottom of the inning after scoring on a wild pitch.

K-State responded in the top of the second with a solo shot to opposite field by Ingram.

After a scoreless third, TCU erupted for six runs to take control of the game,7-3, led by a two-run double from Jack Arthur.&nbsp;&nbsp;

TCU issued a pair of walks before an infield single by Jones loaded the bases and forced the Frogs' to make a call to the bullpen and bring Ben Abeldt to the hill in the sixth. The lefty punched out the first two batters he faced until a diving catch by the Frogs' centerfielder ended the threat and preserved the lead.

Jones wasted no time putting the Cats on the board as the Cats' leadoff hitter belted his seventh homer of the season out to right field to start game two.

English followed with a double into left field until Day and Culpepper were each walked to load the bases. The Wildcats managed to push a run across the plate with a grounder to short.

The Wildcats doubled their lead in the third as Culpepper launched a two-run homer into left field to make it a four-run ballgame.

After the third 1-2-3 inning behind Boerema, K-State pieced together back-to-back hits by English and Day with Culpepper delivering a two-run double in the next at bat to extend the lead, 6-0.

A bunt single broke up Boerema's no-hit bid in the fifth, leading to TCU's first run of the game to end the shutout.

Leading 6-3, Neighbors relieved Boerema in the sixth and inherited runners on second and third with two outs. The right-handed closer used three pitches to strike out the batter and get out of the inning.

Neighbors slammed the door on the TCU offense, as the Royse City, Texas, product retired 10 of the 13 batters he faced to close the game.

ON DECK &nbsp; K-State will head to Lincoln Wednesday to take on Nebraska (26-13, 9-4 Big Ten) at 6 p.m. at Hawks Field at Haymarket Field.

&nbsp; DENTON, Texas&nbsp;— A complete game shutout from&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/softball/roster/chloe-barber/7573">Chloe Barber</a>&nbsp;and a&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/softball/roster/taylor-sedlacek/7570">Taylor Sedlacek</a>&nbsp;three-run home run powered Wichita State to a 6-0 win in the series finale at North Texas Saturday morning.&nbsp;&nbsp;

&nbsp; Wichita State (22-21, 13-11) avoided a series sweep, which would have been the first time ever the Shockers were swept in an American Athletic Conference series.

After throwing a gem last night with 14 strikeouts and just one run allowed, Barber came right back 12 hours later and tossed a two-hitter, complete game shutout. She walked three and struck out three.

&nbsp; Wichita State managed just three hits in the contest, all three extra base hits. Sedlacek provided the big blast with her three-run home run, while&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/softball/roster/krystin-nelson/7568">Krystin Nelson</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/softball/roster/caroline-tallent/7571">Caroline Tallent</a>&nbsp;tallied an RBI double each.

&nbsp; Entering the top of the third, Wichita State had yet to put anyone on base. Then with two outs, three straight walks from Nelson,&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/softball/roster/cc-wong/8967">CC Wong</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/softball/roster/addison-barnard/7558">Addison Barnard</a>&nbsp;loaded the bags for Sedlacek. A 1-2 pitch found its way to the backstop, allowing Nelson to score from third to open the scoring. Two pitches later Sedlacek sent one over the wall in left to put the Shockers up, 4-0.

Barber carried a no-hitter into the bottom of the fifth until back-to-back singles with two outs broke it up. She would keep the shutout intact after inducing an infield pop-up. North Texas never advanced a runner past second on the day.

&nbsp; In the top of the seventh, Wichita State tacked on a pair of insurance runs behind Tallent and Nelson RBI doubles.

Up Next The regular season comes to an end next weekend when Wichita State hosts Memphis for senior weekend at Wilkins Stadium, May 3-5.

🥎 Shockers leave North Texas with shutout win

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Racing is back on the historic half-mile oval in Hutchinson. Salt City Racing LLC opened its 2024 season Friday night at the Kansas State Fairgrounds.&nbsp;

"We had a great night," said Phil Nightingale. "Hit my goal on race cars and we had over 2,500 in the stands!"&nbsp; <a href="https://hutchpost.com/posts/eccdd1ac-5cc0-4690-81d7-e3597a41ce28">In November of 2022</a>, the Kansas State Fair Board approved demolishing the half-mile oval racetrack.&nbsp;

<a href="https://hutchpost.com/posts/4ec532d3-3a09-4133-8d04-0a1c51feaf12">In January 2024,</a>&nbsp;the fair rescinded their motion to demolish the track after accepting a proposal from Nightingale of Mel Hambelton Ford.

There were more than a dozen Hutchinson natives who entered into Friday night’s races. Five different classes competed: Stock, URSS Sprints, Hobby Stock, Sport Mods and Modified.&nbsp;

Tathan Burkhart of Hays placed first in IMCA Stock Car. Scott Miller of Hutchinson placed third in stock car. Miller placed first in his heat. Larned Mayor and chief save our track supporter William Nusser placed 12th in the stock class.&nbsp;

Dakota Sproul of Hays placed first in IMCA Modified. Sproul placed first in his heat. Peyton Burkhart of Hutchinson placed fifth in modified and first in his heat.&nbsp;

Taylor Velasquez of Liberal placed first in IMCA Racesaver Sprint Car and also placed first in his heat.&nbsp;

Cody Williams of Minneapolis placed first in IMCA Hobby Stock and first in his heat.&nbsp;

Warren Huffman of Salina placed first in Northern Sportmod and first in his heat.&nbsp;

Each class was split into two different heat races. The stock and sprint class completed eight laps around the track in the heat races and modified, hobby stock and Northern Sportmod completed six.&nbsp;

For the A Feature (main event) the stock, hobby stock and northern sportmod completed 15 laps around the track and modified and sprint car completed 20 laps.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Salt City has truly Grand Opening Friday

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas City Chiefs only made one pick on Friday at the NFL Draft. At No. 63, they selected&nbsp;OT Kingsley Suamataia from BYU.

The 21-year-old has experience at both left and right tackle playing almost half his snaps at each spot.

Suamataia was a boxer as a kid and allowed just two sacks in his last two seasons.&nbsp;

Detroit Lions left tackle Penei Sewell is his cousin and&nbsp;Suamataia has learned a lot from him, according to comments he made to <a href="https://www.chiefs.com/news/five-things-to-know-about-chiefs-second-round-pick-ot-kingsley-suamataia">Chiefs.com</a>.

DETROIT (AP) — Seth Lugo pitched seven scoreless innings and the Kansas City Royals won their fourth straight game, beating the Detroit Tigers 8-0 on Friday.

Lugo (4-1) allowed three singles and matched a career high with nine strikeouts in a game played at 1:10 pm due to the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/nfl-draft-caleb-williams-first-round-picks-36120e9df01c0cdaebf0e621cfbd2a8e">NFL draft</a>&nbsp;festivities in downtown Detroit on Friday evening.

“Being aggressive is always part of my plan, but I just had really good fastball command,” he said. “They took some early swings that gave me an idea of what their approach was going to be throughout the game.”

Tigers starter Reese Olson (0-4) allowed one run on three hits and three walks in seven innings, striking out eight.

Kansas City led 1-0 before scoring seven runs in the ninth inning.

“Lugo is a throwback to the guys who pitched, moved the ball around and changed speeds,” Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said.

With one out in the third, Adam Frazier and Kyle Isbel singled before Maikel Garcia walked to load the bases for the Royals. Bobby Witt Jr. hit a sacrifice fly to center.

The Tigers thought they had the lead in the bottom of the third, but Frazier reached over the right-field fence to rob Parker Meadows of a home run before doubling Javier Báez off first.

“I just tried to get back there with some space to jump,” Frazier said. “I wasn't sure if I would have a chance at it with the wind, but fortunately I was able to do it.”

Detroit got a hit and an error against former teammate John Schreiber in the eighth, but he struck out Spencer Torkelson to end the inning.

The Royals loaded the bases with one out in the ninth, thanks to two singles and a walk off Tyler Holton. Holton, usually one of Detroit's best control pitchers, then hit Frazier and Isbel with consecutive pitches to make it 3-0.

“He really didn't have command,” Hinch said. “That's really unusual for him — he rarely misfires at all. He was in a perfect spot facing two lefties, and he sailed the ball into their elbows, so I had to get him out of there.”

Garcia greeted Will Vest with a two-run single to put the Royals up by five, and Witt tripled before Vinnie Pasquantino's sacrifice fly made it 8-0.

“We did a good job of creating traffic against Holton and then we took advantage of a little wildness,” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. Then we were able to tack on with Mikael and Bobby both coming up big."

Tigers C Carson Kelly (ribs) wasn't available for the game. Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said the team might make a roster move to avoid playing with one healthy catcher. ... Tigers utilityman Andy Ibáñez (hamstring) started a rehab assignment on Thursday, going 2-3 with a double for Triple-A Toledo.

The teams play the second game of the series on Saturday evening. RHP Casey Mize (1-0, 2.95) is scheduled to start for Detroit against RHP Brady Singer (3-0, 1.82).

⚾ Royals shut out Tigers Friday

FORT WORTH, Texas&nbsp;— Thirteen strikeouts from the TCU pitching staff spearheaded the Horned Frogs to a 12-0 victory in the series opener at Lupton Stadium Friday night.

K-State (25-16, 9-10 Big 12) allowed runs in four of the first five innings, including four in the second and third. The Horned Frogs (25-15, 9-13 Big 12) used 17 hits to score 12 runs to back right-handed starter Payton Tolle.

The Wichita State transfer held the Wildcats to three hits in his five innings to pick up his fifth victory with TCU (5-4). Tolle, a right-hander from Yukon, Okla., finished the game with seven strikeouts and issued four walks.

&nbsp; "Difficult to play from behind versus a premiere arm," said head coach&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/baseball/roster/coaches/pete-hughes/2461">Pete Hughes</a>. "I have confidence in our team and how we'll respond."

The Green Wave (23-19, 8-8) used a leadoff walk and four singles to do their damage in the first against WSU starter&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/baseball/roster/tyler-dobbs/7616">Tyler Dobbs</a>&nbsp;(5-4), putting the Shockers in an early 4-0 hole. An RBI ground out from&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/baseball/roster/jaden-gustafson/7525">Jaden Gustafson</a>&nbsp;and an RBI single from&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/baseball/roster/mauricio-millan/7532">Mauricio Millan</a>&nbsp;in the bottom of the inning made it 4-2, but the Shockers (21-22, 7-9) would get no closer the rest of the way.

Wichita State (21-21, 12-11) will look back at several missed opportunities on the night that cost them a pair of games.&nbsp; The Shockers dropped the first game on a walk-off home run in the ninth inning. In the nightcap Wichita State had nine hits and held North Texas to just three hits, but left 14 runners on base and went 0-for-13 with runners in scoring position.
