The Hutchinson Community College baseball team announced on Monday that its 2024 season opener will now be this Thursday, February 1 at Hobart-Detter Field.

Trying to take advantage of the warmer weather this week, the Blue Dragons will open the season against Southeast (Nebraska) Community College in a doubleheader at 1 and 3:30 p.m. Thursday at Hobart-Detter Field.

The season opener was supposed to be Tuesday, February 6 against Central Christian, but with temperatures in the mid- to upper-50s forecast for this Thursday, the Blue Dragons and Bobcats will play two games on Thursday.

The improvised schedule for the Blue Dragons is now:

February 1 – vs. Southeast CC, 1 and 3:30 p.m. at Hobart-Detter Field

February 6 – vs. Central Christian JV, 1 p.m. at Hobart-Detter Field

The Chiefs beat Lamar Jackson and the No. 1-seeded Baltimore Ravens&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/travis-kelce-nfl-record-postseason-receptions-2d1bde50cb0535dc031e76f59f0000ec" target="_blank">17-10 in the AFC championship</a>&nbsp;game Sunday to advance to the Super Bowl for the fourth time in five years. A few hours later, Brock Purdy rallied the No. 1-seeded 49ers to a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/49ers-lions-score-nfc-championship-bed96677697deb0dfb1fa757288ab4bb" target="_blank">34-31 victory</a>&nbsp;over the Detroit Lions in the NFC title game.

The Chiefs (14-6) are aiming to become the first back-to-back champions since Tom Brady and the New England Patriots did it following the 2003-04 seasons.

Purdy — who was still two years away from being the last pick of the 2022 NFL draft the last time the teams played in the Super Bowl — will try to lead the 49ers (14-5) to a record-tying sixth title in their eighth appearance.

The teams meet at Allegiant Stadium on Feb. 11. The 49ers opened as 2 1/2-point favorites, according to&nbsp;<a href="https://sportsbook.fanduel.com/navigation/nfl?tab=super-bowl" target="_blank">FanDuel Sportsbook</a>.

Mahomes and the Chiefs overcame a 20-10 fourth-quarter deficit and beat the 49ers 31-20 to give coach Andy Reid his first Super Bowl victory on Feb. 2, 2020. Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers spoiled Kansas City’s repeat bid the following year.

The Chiefs will become just the third team to play in four Super Bowls over a five-year span. Only the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 1970s, the Dallas Cowboys in the 1990s and the Patriots in the 2000s and 2010s won three Super Bowls in a five-year span.

Mahomes rallied the Chiefs for a 38-35 comeback win over the Philadelphia Eagles in the Super Bowl last year. They beat Miami 26-7 in the wild-card round and defeated the Bills 27-24 in Buffalo last week in Mahomes’ first career playoff game on the road besides Super Bowls.

The 49ers were dominated by the Eagles in the NFC title game last year in a game that saw Purdy suffer a significant elbow injury that required surgery. He returned for the season opener and helped them earn a first-round bye. Purdy led a 24-21 comeback win over Green Bay last week and brought the Niners back from a 17-point deficit against the Lions.

Only New England and Pittsburgh have more Super Bowl wins the San Francisco, which last won it following the 1994 season.

Reid will lead a team in the Super Bowl for the fifth time, moving into a tie with Tom Landry for third most behind Bill Belichick’s nine and Don Shula’s six. Reid coached the Eagles when the Patriots beat them to repeat 19 years ago.

Niners coach Kyle Shanahan returns to the Super Bowl after losing to Reid in his first crack at it. Shanahan was Atlanta’s offensive coordinator when the Falcons blew a 28-3 lead against Brady and the Patriots in Super Bowl 51.

Mahomes, a two-time NFL and Super Bowl MVP, will start in his fourth Super Bowl, tied with Joe Montana, Terry Bradshaw, Peyton Manning, Roger Staubach and Jim Kelly for third-most behind Brady’s 10 and John Elway’s five.

The biggest question is whether&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/afc-championship-taylor-swift-jason-kelce-772f0bed35e4e85e3cf4848781a61764" target="_blank">Taylor Swift</a>&nbsp;will make it to Las Vegas to watch her boyfriend in the Super Bowl on Feb. 11. Swift, who celebrated with Kelce on the field after the victory over the Ravens, is scheduled to perform in Japan just 24 hours before kickoff.

🏈 The Super Bowl is set: Mahomes and the Chiefs will face Purdy and the 49ers

BALTIMORE (AP) — Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce were at their magnificent best in the first half, and Kansas City's defense delivered another masterpiece against Lamar Jackson and Baltimore, helping the Chiefs reach the Super Bowl for the fourth time in five years with a 17-10 victory in the AFC championship game Sunday.

Kelce caught 11 passes for 116 yards and a touchdown, and now the big question at next month's Super Bowl in Las Vegas is whether his girlfriend Taylor Swift will be able to make it there in the middle of her tour. The pop star was on hand again Sunday, and the 34-year-old Kelce was at his best.

“The Chiefs are still the Chiefs,” said Kelce, who broke Jerry Rice’s career record for receptions in the postseason. “And believe it — you’ve got to fight for your right to party! Believe it, baby, we’re going to Las Vegas.”

Kansas City (14-6) will face either San Francisco or Detroit on Feb. 11, and a win would make the Chiefs the first team to win it all in back-to-back seasons since the New England Patriots 19 years ago.

Swift's presence has turned the Chiefs into even more of a glamour team than they already were, but it's been more of a blue-collar performance on the field this season. Aside from Kelce, Mahomes hasn't had the receiving playmakers he's enjoyed in years past.

Instead, the defense has been a big part of why Kansas City won the AFC West and eventually prevailed in two straight road playoff games against Buffalo and Baltimore to win the conference.

“It’s been a heck of a year. We’ve been underdogs the last few games,” Mahomes said. “We never feel like underdogs. We’ve got a lot of guys on this team that know how to win. When the playoffs get around, they’re here to make it happen. And now we’re in the Super Bowl. The job’s not done.”

The Chiefs led 17-7 at halftime, and Justin Tucker's 43-yard field goal with 2:34 to play was the only scoring of the second half. Baltimore kicked deep after that, and on third-and-9, Mahomes connected with Marquez Valdes-Scantling — one of his most-maligned receivers — on a 32-yard pass that sealed the game.

Mahomes went 30 of 39 for 241 yards and a touchdown.

Jackson could win his second MVP after leading Baltimore to the league’s best record and point differential during the regular season, but the Ravens allowed touchdowns on the first two Kansas City possessions and appeared a bit panicky at times after that.

Baltimore (14-5) made undisciplined mistakes all game, while Kansas City looked the part of the team making its sixth straight appearance in the conference title game.

With the Ravens down by 10 in the third quarter, rookie Zay Flowers caught a 54-yard pass to the Kansas City 10 — then was flagged for taunting after the play. Moments later, he fumbled near the goal line and the Ravens ended up with no points.

That was one of several frustrating moments for Baltimore fans, whose city was hosting an AFC championship game for the first time since January 1971, when the Colts beat the Oakland Raiders.

Jackson went 20 of 37 for 272 yards and a touchdown, but Baltimore never really exploited its perceived advantage on the ground. Jackson raced under one of his own tipped passes in the first half for a 13-yard reception, but he also turned the ball over twice, including a forced pass into heavy coverage that was picked off in the end zone with 6:45 left in the game.

Jackson fell to 2-4 as a starter in the postseason despite having been the top seed in the AFC twice. He made a few sensational individual plays, but the Ravens had trouble moving the ball otherwise.

Mahomes, meanwhile, competed his first 11 pass attempts, and although the Ravens largely shut Kansas City down after that, the damage was done on a rainy day in Baltimore.

There was some chippy behavior before the game, which included Ravens defensive back Arthur Maulet and a group of Kansas City players having to be separated.

Then the Chiefs forced a three-and-out on the game’s first drive and went 86 yards for th e opening touchdown. Kelce caught a 13-yard pass from Mahomes over the middle on fourth-and-2. Then the star tight end beat All-Pro safety Kyle Hamilton for a 19-yard touchdown to make it 7-0.

Jackson answered in his own spectacular way. He broke free for a 21-yard run when Baltimore went for it on fourth-and-1 from its 34. Then the star quarterback ducked out of a near-sack by Leo Chenal, retreated a bit farther back and threw a 30-yard scoring strike to Flowers, who celebrated with teammates by doing the “swag surf” dance that Swift and Chiefs fans did at a recent game.

Kansas City was unbothered. Mahomes drove his team 75 yards in 9:02 — with the help of an acrobatic diving catch by Kelce on one third down toss — and Isiah Pacheco capped the 16-play march with a 2-yard touchdown run.

The Chiefs actually missed chances to extend their lead. A sack by Charles Omenihu forced a fumble by Jackson that gave Kansas City the ball at the Baltimore 33. But Kelce was marked just short on a third down catch, and Pacheco was stopped on the ensuing fourth down at the 13.

After a couple of personal fouls on Baltimore helped Kansas City cross midfield late in the half, the Chiefs were flagged for back-to-back holding calls, the second of which wiped out a 33-yard screen pass to Rashee Rice for what would have been a touchdown.

A 9-yard pass to Kelce put Kansas City in position for Harrison Butker’s 52-yard field goal that made it 17-7.

Omenihu left with a knee injury, and star defensive tackle Chris Jones was shaken up in the fourth quarter for the Chiefs.

Chiefs: Kansas City could face a rematch with a Detroit team it lost to 21-20 in the season opener. The Chiefs have not faced the 49ers this season.

Ravens: Baltimore knows it can win a lot of games with Jackson and his talented supporting cast, but getting past the Chiefs seems like an especially daunting task now.

EMPORIA, Kan. — It was there for the taking, but the Shawnee Heights T-Birds found a way to pull away in the fourth quarter of the Consolation Championship game of the Glacier's Edge Tournament to defeat the Salthawks 51-35.

Hutch trailed by two going into the final quarter, but was only able to produce three points to Shawnee Heights 14 for the finish.

Hutchinson started off slow only scoring three points in the first quarter, but only trailed by five as the T-Birds also had a slow start, partially due to standout KK Emmot collecting two quick fouls which forced her to sit most of the first half. 

Senior point guard Breezy Canady picked up the slack by scoring 11 of her game-high 15 points in the first half.

Azariah Dawes continued to shine by getting the Salthawks back in the game with 13 of her career high 18 points in the second quarter. Dawes scored 46 points over the three games played in Emporia. The senior forward is really gaining confidence over the first half of the season.

Rachel Tomac followed her 14-rebound performance on Friday with another strong game off the bench to score seven points. Kaia Smith added six points along with 16 rebounds in the loss, Grace Posch hit two three point shots in the third quarter for six points, Kolbie Craft had six. Lily Rodriguez added a late free throw to account for her one point.

Shawnee Heights was led with Canady's 15, Emmot had 14, Reianna Vega added 12. Jaidyn Euwer came off the bench to score three, Kaydence Torres and Rachel Swift each scored four.

Hutch (6-5) returns home next week to host Newton on Tuesday and Salina South on Friday at the Salthawk Activity Center.&nbsp;

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Tre King had 21 points and nine rebounds, and No. 23 Iowa State knocked off No. 7 Kansas 79-75 on Saturday.

Iowa State (16-4, 5-2) improved to 13-0 at home this season while enhancing its status as a Big 12 contender. Keshon Gilbert scored 16 points for the Cyclones, and reserve Curtis Jones had 15 points.

All three contributed to a season-best performance from the 3-point line for the Cyclones, who went 14 for 30 from beyond the arc.

“Playing in that atmosphere, you think every shot you're taking is going in,” Iowa State guard Tamin Lipsey said. “Just how loud the fans are and the vibe in the whole arena is so good, you take all the shots with confidence.”

Lipsey finished with 10 points, including a 3-pointer and a layup that helped Iowa State seize control early in the second half. Jones' 3-pointer increased the Cyclones' advantage to 55-43 with 11:44 left.

“Honestly, it was just playing for each other,” King said. “Something we pride ourselves on is being a great unselfish team. Credit to each and every one of these guys for finding us in the spots where we were available.”

Hunter Dickinson led Kansas (16-4, 4-3) with 20 points and 15 rebounds. Kevin McCullar Jr. had 16 points on 5-for-18 shooting, and Johnny Furphy finished with 15.

“When you have a team that usually makes four 3s a game hit 14, it definitely makes it more challenging,” Dickinson said. “It makes it harder to try and stage a comeback.”

Kansas closed to 67-63 on a layup by Dickinson and a fast-break dunk by Furphy. But Iowa State held on.

Gilbert’s layup with 2:43 left lifted the Cyclones to a 74-65 lead. After the Jayhawks rallied again, Gilbert connected on a 3 to make it 77-72 with 41 seconds to go.

“We switched a lot,” Kansas coach Bill Self said. “We should have been able to get to shooters better. But give them credit. A lot of it was, could we have done better? Yes. But a lot of it was they made shots they haven't been making.”

It was the only scheduled meeting this season for the longtime rivals, due to a shuffle of Big 12 membership. Saturday marked the 257th game between Iowa State and Kansas. The Jayhawks had won eight of the previous 10.

The Cyclones used their defense to slow down the Jayhawks. Kansas began the day as the Big 12 leader in shooting percentage, hitting 50.8% for the season. It got off to a slow start on Saturday and shot 45% (27 for 60) for the game.

HOUSTON (AP) — Jamal Shead scored 17 points, J’Wan Roberts added 14 points and six rebounds and No. 4 Houston beat Kansas State 74-52 on Saturday to extend its winning streak to four games.

Roberts and Emanuel Sharp each scored nine points in the first half as Houston built a 41-21 halftime lead. Houston (18-2, 5-2 Big 12) shot 40% and was 7 of 21 on 3-pointers.

“Our Holy Trinity doesn’t change,” Houston coach Kelvin Sampson said. “Defend, rebound and take care of the ball. Do those three things, and you have a chance to win.”

Damian Dunn had 13 points for the Cougars, who have won 17 straight home games. Houston forced 18 turnovers and converted them into 25 points and owned a 28-18 advantage in points in the paint.

“Consistency,” Sampson said of Houston’s defense. “I don’t know if our defensive effort was any better against Texas Tech or Central Florida. That’s the way we practice. That’s the standard I hold these kids to.”

Cam Carter scored 16 points and Arthur Kaluma and Dai Dai Ames each added 11 points for Kansas State (14-6, 4-3), which lost its second straight. The Wildcats also shot 40% and were 7 of 21 on 3-pointers.

The Wildcats closed within 32-21 with 2:45 remaining on a 3-pointer by Kaluma, but the Cougars finished the half with a 9-0 run to take a 20-point into halftime on a free throw by Jamal Shead.

Kansas State: The Wildcats missed a chance for another Quad 1 win, falling to 1-3 in Quad 1 games. … The 21 first-half points were a season low for points scored in a half.

Houston: The Cougars had a 38-28 advantage in rebounds and 15-7 in offensive boards. Houston turned that into a 15-7 edge in second chance points. … Houston shot 23 of 34 from the free-throw line.

For the second straight game, Tang was issued a technical foul late in the second half. He said umpire Gary Maxwell told Carter that if he wasn’t quiet, he would get him out of the game, and then, he proceeded to call “two tick tack fouls on him.”

“I got a tech for telling Gary that he’s the adult, and he needs to act like it because he was chirping with one of my players, and I’m always going to defend my guys,” Tang said. “If my guys are wrong, I’m going to correct them. What Gary Maxwell did and said to my player was not warranted, and all I told him was he was better than that as a person and he’s the adult, and I got a tech for that.”

CHIEFS PLAYER TO WATCH: It’s not so much a single player but the entire Kansas City offensive line, and the interior in particular, that must play well on Sunday. The Chiefs could be without stalwart LG Joe Thuney after he strained his pectoral muscle in the divisional round at Buffalo. But regardless, if the Chiefs want to win they need to be able to run the ball with Isiah Pacheco, and that starts with the guys up front.

RAVENS PLAYER TO WATCH: All-Pro S Kyle Hamilton has done a bit of everything for Baltimore’s defense this season, and his versatility could be crucial against everything Patrick Mahomes can do offensively for the Chiefs. Hamilton became the first player since Tyrann Mathieu in 2015 to have double-digit tackles for loss and at least four interceptions in one season.

KEY MATCHUP: Baltimore’s pass protection against Kansas City DLs Chris Jones and George Karlaftis. Houston tried to bother Lamar Jackson with lots of blitzing, but the Ravens eventually adjusted and won that game fairly easily last week. The Chiefs would love to pressure Jackson without bringing extra players if they can.

KEY INJURIES: Thuney (pectoral) and S Mike Edwards (concussion) missed practice this week. So did RG Trey Smith, though he had an illness and is expected to play. ... Baltimore TE Mark Andrews (ankle) hasn’t played since November, but he’s been at practice this week. CB Marlon Humphrey (calf) also practiced after missing the team’s playoff opener.

SERIES NOTES: The Ravens rallied with two fourth-quarter touchdowns to beat the Chiefs 36-35 in their most recent meeting. That victory snapped the Ravens’ four-game losing streak in the series. EMPORIA, Kan. — The Hutchinson Salthawk girls bounced back after their loss to Derby in the first round of the Emporia Glacier's Edge Invitational in fine fashion to defeat Wichita Southeast 49-34 on Friday.

Hutchinson (6-4) now andvances to the consolation championship game to play for 5th place in the 50th Glacier's Edge Tourney versus Shawnee Heights on Saturday at 11 a.m. in Emporia.

The Salthawks jumped out on the Golden Buffaloes quickly with a 10-0 run to lead 14-4 at the end of the first quarter. Southeast was not able to score until the 4:46 mark of the first quarter.

Hutch used a switching defense alternating between a zone and man-to-man that held the Buffs to only one field goal and a free-throw in the second quarter.

The second have was more of the same as Hutchinson to 41-20 with 10 points being scored by Salthawk senior Azariah Dawes. Rachel Tomac came off the bench to completely own the boards with 14 rebounds to go along with her nine point mostly on offensive putbacks.

Hutchinson was led by Dawes 16 points followed by Grace Posch, Tomac, and Kaia Smith each with nine. Kolbie Craft added four and Ava Krone came off the bench to score two.

Wichita Southeast (4-8) suffered their sixth loss in a row, but will play for 7th against Lawrence Free State on Saturday.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — Michigan has hired Sherrone Moore to replace coach Jim Harbaugh, giving the 37-year-old offensive coordinator an opportunity to lead college football's winningest program. The school made the move two days after Harbaugh bolted to lead the Los Angeles Chargers with a five-year deal that gives him another chance to chase a Super Bowl title. NFL reaches 'major milestone' with record 9 minority head coaches in place for the 2024 season

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — The National Football League has urged teams for years to hire more minority head coaches. That mission finally seems to be paying off. Four minority head coaches have been hired this year: Atlanta's Raheem Morris, New England's Jerod Mayo, Las Vegas' Antonio Pierce and Carolina's Dave Canales. That brings the number of coaches of color entering the 2024 season to nine, the most in league history. Seattle and Washington have yet to fill their vacancies. Richard Lapchick, founder of The Institute for Diversity and Ethics In Sport, called it a "major milestone" for the NFL.

Jaeger went ahead moments after Thomas Detry's third shot landed well past the hole and spun back into the pond fronting the green, leading to a double bogey that cost him the lead. Jaeger shot a 1-over 73 on a tough day of high scores. He was at 11-under 205 through 54 holes, one shot ahead of Matthieu Pavon and Nicolai Hojgaard. Detry was two shots back after his blunder on the 18th led to a 73.

It might be tempting to see some tidy symbolism and greater significance in Novak Djokovic's loss to Jannik Sinner in the Australian Open semifinals. It marks the end of the thirtysomething Djokovic's 33-match winning streak at Melbourne Park and the end of his bid for an 11th championship there and 25th Grand Slam trophy overall. It also is a breakthrough for the twentysomething Sinner, an up-and-coming talent who will now get to play in his first major final, against Daniil Medvedev on Sunday. But after Djokovic lost to Carlos Alcaraz in last year's Wimbledon final, Djokovic went right back out and won the U.S. Open a couple of months later.

Deebo Samuel cleared to play for 49ers in the NFC title game vs. Lions

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Deebo Samuel has been cleared to play in the the NFC championship game against the Detroit Lions after leaving last week's game with a shoulder injury. Samuel was a full participant in practice Friday and had no injury designation for the game. Detroit will be without left guard Jonah Jackson, who injured his knee in last week's win over Tampa Bay but will have second-team All-Pro center Frank Ragnow available for the game. Ragnow has been slowed by injuries to his ankle, toe, knee and back but has no injury designation for the game.

(AP) — Michigan has hired Sherrone Moore to replace coach Jim Harbaugh, giving the 37-year-old offensive coordinator an opportunity to lead college football's winningest program. The school made the move two days after Harbaugh bolted to lead the Los Angeles Chargers with a five-year deal that gives him another chance to chase a Super Bowl title. Moore was 4-0 while filling in for Harbaugh as he served two separate suspensions for potential NCAA rules violations during the 2023 season. OWINGS MILLS, Md. (AP) — John Harbaugh once defeated his own brother in a Super Bowl, so going up against someone he used to work with may not be all that emotional.

Still, there's plenty of respect between the Baltimore coach and his counterpart this weekend: Kansas City's Andy Reid.

“Obviously, it’s a big deal in terms of the relationship,” Harbaugh said this week. “It goes back a long, long, long way. Utmost respect for Andy, utmost appreciation for what he’s accomplished as a coach. We were together for 10 years, the first 10 years there in Philly. We were in a lot of championship games, and a lot of playoff games."

They'll face each other as head coaches for the first time in a playoff game when the Ravens host the Chiefs on Sunday. That's somewhat remarkable given how successful they've been. This is Harbaugh's fourth AFC championship game with Baltimore and Reid's sixth in a row with Kansas City.

Reid leads their head-to-head series 5-2 since he and Harbaugh went their separate ways during the former's tenure at the helm of the Philadelphia Eagles.

“John does a phenomenal job. He knows the whole game,” Reid said. "He was a great special teams coach, a great secondary coach and he’s been a great head coach. Very proud of him and all he’s done and accomplished.”

Harbaugh was a special teams coordinator in 1998 for the Eagles under Ray Rhodes, then remained in that role for eight seasons after Reid took over the following season.

“Ray Rhodes was great to be around for a year or two. If Ray’s out there listening, just thank you very much. I’m always appreciative of what I learned from Ray,” Harbaugh said. “Then Andy came in, I was hoping to stay, and he gave me an opportunity to do it. I was young and just figuring things out. That was good of him, and hope he’s glad he did, looking back on it.”

Reid said he'd known Harbaugh's father, Jack, before keeping John on his staff in Philadelphia.

“His dad was the best. He was real close with LaVell Edwards (at BYU). I did a thing at a hospital one time with them. I was a young coach, carrying Coach Edwards’ bag. And I got to know them, and we were like, the three coaches at this whole convention that showed up at the hospital,” Reid said. "We spent a couple of days together and it was great. I never forgot it. So when I met John, I was like, ‘If you’re half as good as your dad, you’re on.’ And he’s been that.”

Harbaugh became a secondary coach for Philadelphia in 2007, then took over the Ravens the following season. He won a Super Bowl in his fifth season in Baltimore. The opponent in that game was San Francisco, then coached by his brother, Jim.
