MINNEAPOLIS (AP) —&nbsp;Joe Ryan pitched seven smooth innings for the Minnesota Twins, who got a two-run homer by Jose Miranda and a three-run shot from Trevor Larnach before hanging on for a 6-5 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Monday in the opener of a four-game series.

Ryan allowed one run and four singles while lowering his team-leading ERA to 2.96. The right-hander struck out nine and walked none, getting 15 swings and misses while topping his four-seam fastball out at 96.6 mph, according to MLB's Statcast. He threw 44 of 52 fastballs above his average velocity (93.7).

“He’s a different animal when he’s throwing that hard,” Twins catcher Ryan Jeffers said.

Ryan (4-3) has pitched into at least the sixth in each of his 11 starts.

“The ball’s coming out well, and it’s not just like he’s throwing hard,” manager Rocco Baldelli said. “He’s locating his pitches. He’s putting them in great places, and that’s a good combination for him.”

Alex Kirilloff’s two-out RBI single in the eighth inning gave the Twins (29-24) enough insurance to improve to 5-1 since a seven-game losing streak.

Hunter Renfroe’s two-out RBI double in the ninth off Cole Sands put men on second and third for the Royals (34-21), before Jhoan Duran was summoned for the final out.

Duran hit M.J. Melendez on the foot with an 0-2 curveball, and Dairon Blanco reached on a slow-rolling single to third base that cut the lead to three. Maikel Garcia hit a similar ball up the line that Willi Castro fielded but threw off balance and off the bag for an error that allowed a second run to score.

With Royals star Bobby Witt Jr. at the plate, Duran induced a bouncer back to the mound to record his seventh save.

Miranda took Alec Marsh (4-2) deep to the bullpen beyond left-center in the third inning. Larnach hit a two-out fastball into the upper deck above right field in the fifth, a smash measured at 441 feet and 109.1 mph that gave the Twins a 5-0 lead.

Marsh finished five innings with seven strikeouts. He allowed three other hits — all singles — beside the home runs. But his only two walks came in the fifth, preceding Larnach's blast.

“Other than that I thought I was fine. Just unfortunate that out of the (five) hits, two of them were big flies with guys on,” Marsh said.

The Royals have their first losing streak since a two-game skid from May 4-5 and just their second since April 30. Their eight-game winning streak was stopped on Sunday in Tampa Bay.

Ryan's previous outing was a three-hit gem of seven shutout innings that stopped the seven-game skid. He improved to 6-0 with a 1.50 ERA in eight career starts against the Royals.

“They’re a really good team, so it was just good to get a win,” Ryan said. “The offense scoring so many runs allows me to be a little bit free-er in there, (get) a little bit more rest in between innings."

Royals CF Kyle Isbel was cleared for action after a full pregame workout but remained on the bench as a precaution, two days after fouling a ball off his face that caused a small fracture in his upper nose.

Royals: LHP Cole Ragans (4-3, 3.34 ERA) takes the mound on Tuesday night with a 13-inning scoreless streak over his last two starts with 19 strikeouts and just three hits allowed.

Twins: RHP Simeon Woods Richardson (1-0, 2.57 ERA) pitches the second game of the series. In two starts at home this season, he has allowed only two runs over 11 innings with 14 strikeouts.

MANHATTAN, Kan. — For the first time since 2013, K-State baseball received an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament, as the Wildcats were selected to compete in the NCAA Fayetteville Regional hosted by No. 5 national seed Arkansas. This is the program's fifth NCAA Tournament appearance in school history and the first under head coach&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/baseball/roster/coaches/pete-hughes/2461">Pete Hughes</a>.

K-State (32-24) was selected as the No. 3 seed in the Fayetteville Regional and will take on the second-seeded Louisiana Tech Bulldogs (45-17) on Friday, May 31, at 7 p.m. at Baum-Walker Stadium., in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament. NEW YORK (AP)—Bill Walton, who starred for John Wooden's UCLA Bruins before becoming a Hall of Famer for his NBA career and one of the biggest stars in basketball broadcasting, died Monday, the league announced on behalf of his family. Walton, who had a prolonged fight with cancer, was 71.

He was the NBA's MVP in the 1977-78 season, a two-time champion and a member of both the NBA's 50th anniversary and 75th anniversary teams. That followed a college career in which he was a two-time champion at UCLA and a three-time national player of the year.

“Bill Walton,” NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said, “was truly one of a kind.”

Walton, who was enshrined in the Hall of Fame in 1993, was larger than life, on the court and off. His NBA career — disrupted by chronic foot injuries — lasted only 468 games with Portland, the San Diego and eventually Los Angeles Clippers and Boston. He averaged 13.3 points and 10.5 rebounds in those games, neither of those numbers exactly record-setting.

Still, his impact on the game was massive.

His most famous game was the 1973 NCAA title game, UCLA against Memphis, in which he shot an incredible 21 for 22 from the field and led the Bruins to another national championship.

“One of my guards said, ’Let’s try something else,” Wooden told The Associated Press in 2008 for a 35th anniversary retrospective on that game.

Wooden’s response during that timeout: “Why? If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”

They kept giving the ball to Walton, and he kept delivering in a performance for the ages.

“It’s very hard to put into words what he has meant to UCLA’s program, as well as his tremendous impact on college basketball," UCLA coach Mick Cronin said Monday. "Beyond his remarkable accomplishments as a player, it’s his relentless energy, enthusiasm for the game and unwavering candor that have been the hallmarks of his larger than life personality.

“As a passionate UCLA alumnus and broadcaster, he loved being around our players, hearing their stories and sharing his wisdom and advice. For me as a coach, he was honest, kind and always had his heart in the right place. I will miss him very much. It’s hard to imagine a season in Pauley Pavilion without him.”

Walton retired from the NBA and turned to broadcasting, something he never thought he could be good at — and an avenue he sometimes wondered would be possible for him, because he had a pronounced stutter at times in his life.

Turns out, he was excellent at that, too: Walton was an Emmy winner.

“In life, being so self-conscious, red hair, big nose, freckles and goofy, nerdy-looking face and can’t talk at all. I was incredibly shy and never said a word,” Walton told The Oregonian newspaper in 2017. “Then, when I was 28 I learned how to speak. It’s become my greatest accomplishment of my life and everybody else’s biggest nightmare.”

The last part of that was just Walton hyperbole. He was beloved for his on-air tangents.

He sometimes appeared on-air in Grateful Dead T-shirts; Walton was a huge fan of the band and referenced it often, even sometimes recording satellite radio specials celebrating what it meant to be a “Deadhead.”

And the Pac-12 Conference, which has basically evaporated in many ways now because of college realignment, was another of his many loves. He always referred to it as the “Conference of Champions” and loved it all the way to the end.

“It doesn’t get any better than this,” he once said on a broadcast, tie-dyed T-shirt on, a Hawaiian lei around his neck.

“What I will remember most about him was his zest for life,” Silver said. “He was a regular presence at league events — always upbeat, smiling ear to ear and looking to share his wisdom and warmth. I treasured our close friendship, envied his boundless energy and admired the time he took with every person he encountered.”

Walton died surrounded by his loved ones, his family said. He is survived by wife Lori and sons Adam, Nate, Chris and Luke — a former NBA player and now a coach.

Newgarden goes back-to-back at Indy 500 to give Roger Penske record-extending 20th win

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Josef Newgarden put his cheating scandal behind him to become the first back-to-back winner of the Indianapolis 500 since Helio Castroneves 22 years ago and give Roger Penske a record-extending 20th win in "The Greatest Spectacle in Racing." The Tennessean passed Pato O'Ward on the final lap of Sunday's rain-delayed race to become the first driver to win consecutive 500s since Castroneves did it for Penske in 2001 and 2002. And just like last year, Newgarden stopped his Chevrolet-powered car on the track and climbed through a hole in the fence to celebrate with fans in the grandstands. O'Ward slumped his head over his steering wheel in bitter disappointment. He was trying to become the first Mexican in 108 runnings to win the Indy 500.

Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving each score 33 points as Mavs beat Wolves for 3-0 lead in West finals

DALLAS (AP) — Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving scored 33 points apiece and the Dallas Mavericks made all the big plays late again, beating the Minnesota Timberwolves 116-107 for a 3-0 lead in the Western Conference finals. The Mavericks went on a 14-3 run to finish the game, winning their fifth consecutive playoff game. No team in NBA playoff history has rallied from 3-0 down. Game 4 is Tuesday night in Dallas. Anthony Edwards had 26 points for the Wolves, but just four after scoring eight consecutive Minnesota points to get the Wolves even in the third quarter.

Braves star Ronald Acuña Jr. to miss the rest of the season after tearing his left ACL

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Atlanta Braves star Ronald Acuña Jr. will miss the rest of the season after he tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee during an 8-1 victory at Pittsburgh. The reigning NL MVP led off the game with a double to right-center field off Martín Pérez. With Marcell Ozuna at the plate, Acuña started toward third on a stolen base attempt and his left knee gave way. Acuña remained down for several minutes while being treated, pointing at his left leg before walking off under his own power. The Braves' initial diagnosis was left knee soreness. But the team announced later that an MRI showed a complete ACL tear that will require season-ending surgery.

(AP) — Christopher Bell won the Coca-Cola 600 on Sunday at Charlotte Motor Speedway after the race was called with 151 laps remaining in a race that was halted for more than two hours because of rain. Bell led a race-high 90 laps to win his eighth career Cup Series race, and his first Coca-Cola 600. Brad Keselowski finished second, William Byron was third, Tyler Reddick was fourth and Denny Hamlin rounded out the top five. The race was red-flagged just as Kyle Larson arrived at Charlotte Motor Speedway to take over driving the Hendrick Motorsports' No. 5 Chevrolet.

Grayson Murray's parents say the two-time PGA Tour winner died of suicide

Grayson Murray's parents say their 30-year-old son took his own life. Murray died on Saturday, one day after he withdrew from a PGA Tour event at Colonial. Eric and Terry Murray are asking for privacy and that people honor Murray by being kind to one another. His death comes at a time when Murray appeared to be on track with his life and his golf. He has been open about his struggles with mental health and alcoholism. He said when he won the Sony Open in January that he had been sober for the last eight months.

Davis Riley gets 1st individual PGA Tour win by 5 at Colonial in final group with Scheffler

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — Davis Riley shot even-par 70 while playing in the final group with Scottie Scheffler, and still won Colonial by five strokes over the world's No. 1 player and Keegan Bradley. It is Riley's first individual victory on the PGA Tour. Riley finished at 14-under 266. Bradley had a closing 67 Sunday, and Scheffler shot 71. Riley began the day with a four-stroke lead, and gave up one stroke with a bogey on the second hole. But that was the closest Scheffler or anybody else would get all day. The 27-year-old Riley's only other PGA Tour win came with Nick Hardy to win the Zurich Classic team event in New Orleans last year.

NASCAR star Kyle Larson finishes 18th in Indy 500 debut, then heads to Charlotte for Coca-Cola 600

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Kyle Larson completed every lap of the Indianapolis 500, finishing 18th in the NASCAR star's debut in "The Greatest Spectacle in Racing," despite a pair of rookie mistakes that cost him a chance to be in the mix at the end. Then he hopped into an SUV, headed to a waiting helicopter and was off to the Cup Series race in Charlotte. Once there, he climbed into the No. 5 car to finish the Cup Series race, even though rain deprived him of the opportunity to run all 1,100 miles in a single day. Justin Allgaier started the race in Charlotte in his place. There was about 150 laps remaining in the 400-lap race when Larson took over.

Ericsson's early Indianapolis 500 exit typifies wild day full of crashes and other problems

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Marcus Ericsson, the 2022 Indianapolis 500 champion and 2023 runner-up, was knocked out of Sunday's race before completing a lap as part of a three-car crash. It was only the first of a series of problems for the Andretti Global team. Colton Herta and Marco Andretti also hit the wall on Indy's historic 2.5-mile oval while Kyle Kirkwood's hopes ended with a penalty for avoidable contact on pit row. The race featured a handful of crashes, but it was a most difficult month for Ericsson and his teammates.

Stan Wawrinka, who is 39, beats Andy Murray, who is 37, at the French Open. Alcaraz and Osaka win

PARIS (AP) — Stan Wawrinka repeatedly used his trademark one-handed backhand to get the better of Andy Murray at the French Open once again. Wawrinka won 6-4, 6-4, 6-2 on Sunday night in what might have been Murray's last singles match at Roland Garros. Wawrinka, at 39, is just the third man of at least that age to win a match at the clay-court Grand Slam tournament since 1980, joining his Swiss countryman and pal Roger Federer, who did it in 2021, and Ivo Karlovic, who did it two years earlier. Murray just turned 37, and this first-rounder was the second-oldest combined age for two men in Paris since 2000.

WICHITA, Kan.—The Wichita Wind Surge took the series finale 3-1 over the San Antonio Missions at Riverfront Stadium. The game was the first win this season for Wichita where they scored under five runs.

Emmanuel Rodriguez&nbsp;led off the bottom of the first by slugging a solo shot to right field on the first pitch he saw. The long ball was Rodriguez’s eighth of the season and fourth in nine games, marking the second consecutive game where the Wind Surge leadoff batter smacked a home run.

Insurance runs followed for Wichita in the fourth and fifth innings on a&nbsp;Jorel Ortega&nbsp;single to shallow center and a&nbsp;Jeferson Morales&nbsp;fielder’s choice grounded back to the pitcher. The Missions would get on the board in the top of the seventh on an RBI single to the right-center alley by Zach Reks.

Taylor Floyd&nbsp;and&nbsp;Jared Solomon&nbsp;held San Antonio scoreless through the series' final two and one-third innings. The Shockers end the 2024 season with a record of 32-29, the most wins for the program since the 2018 club went 35-21-1.

Wichita State trailed, led, trailed again, and battled back to tie before Linn's blast ended the game with two outs in the ninth. A pair of solo home runs in the first and second innings gave Tulane an early 2-0 lead, but Wichita State took advantage of an error by Green Wave shortstop Marcus Cline to put two runs on the board in the third.&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/baseball/roster/lane-haworth/7609">Lane Haworth</a>&nbsp;plated the first run with an RBI single and&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/baseball/roster/dayvin-johnson/7596">Dayvin Johnson</a>&nbsp;tied the game with a double play grounder.

Wichita State responded with two home runs of their own in the seventh to bring the game back to square one. After Rogers led off the inning with a double,&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/baseball/roster/josh-livingston/7602">Josh Livingston</a>&nbsp;yanked a towering two-run homer to right field that sliced the Tulane lead down to one, 10-9. After a pair of outs,&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/baseball/roster/seth-stroh/7543">Seth Stroh</a>&nbsp;cranked a long solo shot of his own that tied the score at 10-10, where it would stay until the ninth thanks to scoreless relief from&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/baseball/roster/jeremiah-arnett/7612">Jeremiah Arnett</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/baseball/roster/hunter-holmes/8976">Hunter Holmes</a>. ⚾ Tulane walks off Shockers in AAC championship

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Brandon Lowe drove in three runs with a pinch-hit triple during Tampa Bay's four-run seventh inning, and the Rays stopped Kansas City's eight-game win streak with a 4-1 victory over the Royals on Sunday.

The Rays had lost a season-high six straight.

“To get a win that way, to show up in those high stress situations, it feels good and I feel like it really ignites everybody around it," Lowe said.

Kansas City's Michael Wacha (4-5) lost his perfect-game bid in the sixth, and was pulled after Harold Ramírez singled and Isaac Paredes had a double to start the seventh. John Schreiber then hit Randy Arozarena and permitted a fielder’s choice grounder before Lowe delivered on the first pitch he saw.

It was Lowe's second hit in 17 at-bats since returning from a strained right oblique.

Garrett Cleavinger (4-0) got three outs for the win, and Pete Fairbanks handled the ninth for his fifth save in six chances.

Batting with the bases loaded, Bobby Witt Jr. bounced to second for the final out of the game.

“It was a good ballgame," Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. “Really well pitched game. They came up with a big hit when they needed it, and we fought back and just came up a little bit short.”

Wacha retired his first 15 batters on 54 pitches before José Caballero grounded a leadoff double down the third base line in the sixth. After a strikeout and grounder, Yandy Díaz drew a 10-pitch walk before Wacha struck out Jonny DeLuca to complete a 33-pitch inning.

“Those are always tough decisions," Quatraro said about sending Wacha back out for the seventh. "Some of them work. Some of them don’t. That one stings because it didn’t.”

Witt extended his hitting streak to nine games and put the Royals up 1-0 on a sixth-inning homer off Rays reliever Shawn Armstrong. He has homered four times in his last five games.

Witt was thrown out by Arozarena when he tried to score from second in the eighth on Salvador Perez’s one-out single to left.

“Look, we don’t get an out right there that rally just keeps going,” Rays manager Kevin Cash said.

Tampa Bay’s Taj Bradley allowed Adam Frazier’s opposite-field flare single to left in the second and walked three over five innings. After a pair of two-out walks in the fifth, the right-hander fanned Maikel Garcia for his sixth strikeout on his season-high 95th pitch.

Royals: OF Kyle Isbel has a small nose fracture to go with facial lacerations after fouling a ball off his face Saturday, but he avoided going on the 10-day injured list. “He’s very fortunate because the ball grazed the bat, grazed the helmet and (then) hit him,” Quatraro said. “But nothing that needs any time other than just the swelling to go down and get him back out there.” ... INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Team Penske's Josef Newgarden is the defending winner of the Indianapolis 500 and he is a favorite for Sunday's race. A year ago, he seemed on top of the world. Since then, he has had to find ways to restore his love of racing. And then he and his teammates were caught up in a cheating scandal that cost him his season-opening win in Florida. He goes into this weekend's showcase event without team President Tim Cindric, who was among several Penske employees suspended in the fallout. There is rain in the forecast for Sunday and the race could be delayed.

Ricky Stenhouse Jr vows not to retaliate, wreck Kyle Busch at Coca-Cola 600 in Charlotte

CONCORD, N.C. (AP) — Ricky Stenhouse Jr. has cooled off and no longer plans to wreck Kyle Busch at the Coca-Cola 600 on Sunday. But that doesn't mean he and Busch are back on speaking terms. Stenhouse said he spoke to Busch's team owner Richard Childress — who had threatened to go after Stenhouse himself if he retaliated against his driver in NASCAR's longest race of the season at Charlotte Motor Speedway — and said they are fine. Stenhouse threw a punch at Busch that started a melee following last weekend's All-Star Race at North Wilkesboro Speedway. Stenhouse said he spoke the words in the heat of the moment. He was fined $75,000 from NASCAR. He said that you never want to wreck anybody on purpose.

DALLAS (AP) — Mason Marchment scored for the first time since the playoff opener and the Dallas Stars beat the Edmonton Oilers 3-1. The Stars evened the Western Conference Final at a game each. Marchment scored the go-ahead goal 3:41 in the third period when he deflected the puck that went through the legs of a defender, then bounced on the ice and went between the right arm and body of goalie Stuart Skinner. Stars captain Jamie Benn had a goal and assisted on Esa Lindell's late empty-netter. Wyatt Johnston had two assists. Dallas goalie Jake Oettinger stopped 28 shots. Connor Brown had Edmonton's goal. Skinner stopped 22 shots. Game 3 is Monday night in Edmonton.

Grayson Murray dies at age 30 a day after withdrawing from Colonial, PGA Tour says

Two-time PGA Tour winner Grayson Murray has died at the age of 30. The PGA Tour and his management company GSE Worldwide confirmed the death Saturday. There were no immediate details how Murray died. He opened with a 68 at the Charles Schwab Challenge at Colonial. The next day he was 5 over for his round when he withdrew with two holes to play. Murray won the Sony Open this year with a 40-foot birdie putt in a playoff. He also won the Barbasol Championship in 2017. Murray made his Masters debut in April.

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — Davis Riley has a four-shot lead over hometown favorite and Masters champion Scottie Scheffler going into the final round at Colonial. Golf has been disrupted again by news off the course. This time it's the death of two-time PGA Tour winner Grayson Murray. He played the first two rounds at Colonial. The news comes a week after Scheffler's arrest that was triggered by an accident that killed a pedestrian. Barcelona defeated Lyon 2-0 to win its third European trophy and add to its recent dominance in the sport to cap a year that saw increased attendance, additional revenue and more participation by women across all levels of the sport. The final won by Barcelona came as soccer officials celebrated the success of a five-year plan to boost the women's game.

Kala’i Rosario&nbsp;led off the bottom of the first with a solo home run that landed in the Wind Surge bullpen in left-center. The round-tripper was Rosario’s third of the season, all coming at Riverfront Stadium.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Nelson Velázquez homered and had an RBI double in a three-run 11th inning as the Kansas City Royals beat the Tampa Bay Rays 7-4 on Saturday for their eighth straight victory.

After both teams scored once in the 10th, Velázquez opened the 11th with his hit and scored on Adam Frazier's run-scoring single off Richard Lovelady (0-3). Maikel Garcia also drove in a run with a hit.

“That’s what good teams do, play hard and pick each other up,” Frazier said. “That’s a recipe for success.”

James McArthur (2-2) allowed one run in two innings, and Nick Anderson worked a scoreless 11th to get his first save.

“That was a battle,” Kansas City manager Matt Quatraro said. “It took a lot of guts from both sides to stay in a really competitive game.”

Kansas City has scored seven or more runs in a team-record six consecutive games.

“Very frustrating,” Tampa Bay manager Kevin Cash said. “Would rather be talking about wins but right now they're tough to come by.”

Kansas City's Kyle Isbel left in the seventh after a pitch by reliever Garrett Cleavinger hit him in the face while swinging. Isabel remained on his feet and walked off with a trainer holding a towel on his face. The team announced that Isbel has facial lacerations and will undergo additional tests.

Dominic Thiem and Diego Schwartzman also are ready to say goodbye this year. Both lost in qualifying in Paris. The current group chose different ways and times to let everyone know their plans. Goodrow scores in overtime, Rangers outlast Panthers 2-1 in Game 2 to even Eastern Conference final

NEW YORK (AP) — Barclay Goodrow scored at 14:01 of overtime and the New York Ranger beat the Florida Panthers 2-1 on Friday night in Game 2 to even the Eastern Conference final. Goodrow fired a snap shot from between the circles over Sergei Bobrovsky's right shoulder, sending the Madison Square Garden crowd that has been sitting on edge into a frenzy. NEW YORK (AP) — That's three Giant comebacks in a row — all on the road. Matt Chapman, Patrick Bailey and their San Francisco teammates have put together a remarkable run of resiliency this week. Bailey hit a go-ahead grand slam in the eighth inning, Chapman saved the game with a sparkling defensive play at third base and the Giants rallied from another big deficit to beat the New York Mets 8-7. After clawing out of a 6-2 hole in the eighth, the Giants joined the 1932 St. Louis Cardinals as the only major league clubs since 1900 to win three consecutive road games in which they trailed by at least four runs. The previous two came in Pittsburgh.

Elliott blasts NASCAR for fining Stenhouse $75,000 for All-Star Race fight it used in a promotion

CONCORD, N.C. (AP) — Chase Elliott is criticizing NASCAR for fining driver Ricky Stenhouse Jr. $75,000 for punching Kyle Busch following Sunday night's All-Star Race after it had used video of the fight on social media. It was the largest fine ever handed out for fighting in NASCAR history. Elliott seemed stunned when told how much Stenhouse was fined and said that it seems strange that NASCAR would hand down a fine for something they promoted on their social media platform right after the race. Elliott said, "It's like, 'it's not OK, but we are going to blast it all over everything to get more clicks.'"
