WICHITA, Kan. -&nbsp;Mark your calendars on Saturday, Dec. 21 for an in-state showdown in Charles Koch Arena between the Wichita State Shockers and Kansas State Wildcats.

The final year of a four-year contract will bring the Wildcats to the Roundhouse for the first time since 2002. The Shockers are 9-7 all-time vs. K-State in Wichita, but will look to snap a four-game losing streak to the Wildcats.

Current SASO members and men's basketball season ticket holders will have priority access to single game tickets vs. K-State. For more information on season tickets, contact the Shocker Ticket Office at 316-978-FANS.

Game time and TV info will be announced at a later date. The remainder of the non-conference schedule will be released in the coming weeks.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Porter is not named in the court complaint, but its specifics about "Player 1" match the details of the former Toronto Raptors player's downfall this spring. SPRINGDALE, Ark.—The Wichita Wind Surge fell 10-1 in the series opener against the Northwest Arkansas Naturals. Northwest Arkansas hit three consecutive home runs against Wichita in the bottom of the third, just the second time a team has done that against the Wind Surge in team history.

Rodolfo Durán looped an RBI single to center field to put Northwest Arkansas on the board in the bottom of the first. Wichita opponents have now scored first against the Wind Surge for five consecutive games.

Durán and the Naturals four and five hitters Josh Lester and Luca Tresh laced back-to-back-to-back solo home runs two frames later to march ahead to a 4-0 lead. The occurrence is the second time ever a team has slugged three consecutive round-trippers against Wichita.

Ben Ross&nbsp;clubbed a solo shot of his own to left field in the top of the fifth to give the Wind Surge their lone run of the game. Ross’ third home run of the season would be matched by Josh Lester leaving the yard again in right-center on a two-run blast in the bottom half of the inning for a 6-1 Northwest Arkansas advantage.

The Naturals brought in four further runs on a trio of run-scoring hits across their halves of the seventh and eighth innings, eclipsing 10 runs for the third time this season and the second against Wichita, who went down to wrap the ballgame in the ninth.

Jaylen Nowlin&nbsp;received his first loss in a little over a month and second against Northwest Arkansas, now standing at 3-3 on the season. Despite giving up five earned runs on seven hits and a walk, he struck out six Naturals hitters.

⚾ Wind Surge drop series opener in Arkansas

CLEVELAND (AP) — Kansas City shortstop Bobby Witt's Jr.'s throwing error led to Cleveland scoring three runs on an infield grounder in the seventh inning in the Guardians' 8-5 win over the Royals on Tuesday night, the first matchup this season between the AL Central’s top two teams.

The Guardians trailed 5-0 in the fourth before storming back to win the three-game series opener and push their division lead to five over the Royals.

Witt clobbered a pair of two-run homers totaling nearly 1,000 feet, but his errant throw in the seventh swung the game to Cleveland.

“I made a mistake,” Witt said. “It cost us the game.”

After Tyler Freeman's homer tied it 5-5 for the Guardians and chased Royals starter Seth Lugo, Cleveland loaded the bases on a fielder's choice and two walks — one by Sam Long (0-1) — with two outs when David Fry hit a grounder up the middle.

Witt gloved it to the right of the base and initially tried to beat Josh Naylor to second for a force. When Witt realized he couldn't get the sliding Naylor, he unleashed a wild throw that first baseman Vinnie Pasquantino had no chance of getting.

The ball wound up in the photographer's pit, and because Naylor had already gotten to second base, he was awarded third and home.

“I should have just thrown the ball to first and made the play," he said. “I just kind of slow played it and should have just made the decision to throw it to first. You learn from it and you try not to make those mistakes and do the little things right and tonight I didn’t.

"I’ve got to move on and learn from it,” he said while there was little conversation taking place in Kansas City's subdued clubhouse following a tough loss.

Over in Cleveland's side, it was a familiar scene — music and card games following the club's 15th come-from-behind win.

“Our guys truly believe we’re one rally, one hit away from starting a rally to come back and we don’t quit,” said Guardians manager Stephen Vogt. “These guys don’t quit. And it’s just a testament to who they are. That’s who they’ve always been. And it’s just that belief that we’re going to come back.”

Rookie Cade Smith (3-0) came on for Triston McKenzie, and Emmanuel Clase worked the ninth for his AL-leading 19th save. Clase has given up just one earned run in 2024.

Naylor hit a two-run homer for the Guardians, who reached 40 wins in 60 games for just the fourth time in club history. They also did it in 1954 (42-18), 1995 (42-18) and 1999 (40-20).

Witt connected in the third and fourth innings off Cleveland starter McKenzie, who has given up eight homers in his last three starts.

Down 5-0 in the fourth after Witt's second homer, the Guardians got Naylor's 16th homer while scoring three in the fourth off Lugo, who came in leading the AL in wins (9) and was 6-0 in six road starts.

Vogt credits Royals manager Matt Quatraro for helping shape his path to the majors.

Vogt's first manager in the minor leagues was Quatraro.

“He taught me everything,” Vogt said. “How to work and act like a professional. I had him my first two years and I couldn’t have been more thankful for somebody to show me what it means to be a pro, what it means to work, what it means to hold your teammates accountable and hold yourself accountable to being the best you can be.”

Royals: OF Kyle Isbel wasn't in the lineup out of an abundance of caution after colliding with Witt in Sunday's game. Isbel was struck in the head by Witt’s knee as they chased a bloop. Isbel also recently fouled a ball off his face and suffered bruises and fractures. “This was just me being more careful than trying to rush him,” Quatraro said.

MANHATTAN, Kan. — Kansas State added its fourth FBS transfer of the spring window on Tuesday with the signing of cornerback Jordan Dunbar to a Financial Aid Agreement.

Dunbar comes to K-State after spending the previous four seasons at Rice. He redshirted the 2023 season and will have two more years of eligibility remaining. He is joined in this year's spring transfer window class by running back Dylan Edwards (Colorado), linebacker Alec Marenco (New Mexico) and quarterback Ta'Quan Roberson (Connecticut).

A product of Tarrytown, New York, Dunbar saw action in 25 games with 21 starts over parts of three seasons at Rice. After playing in one game in 2020, Dunbar played in all 12 games with nine starts in 2021 as he earned All-Freshman C-USA honors from the league's coaches, while he started all 12 of his games played in 2022 en route to All-Conference USA Honorable Mention accolades.&nbsp;&nbsp;

During the 2022 campaign in which Rice earned a berth into the Lending Tree Bowl, Dunbar tied for ninth in C-USA with 10 pass breakups, including a career high three at Louisiana Tech. In 2021, Dunbar had nine pass breakups with two coming in the season finale, while he had a career-high seven tackles against Houston.

After posting a 9-4 record – which included a win over No. 18 NC State in the Pop-Tarts Bowl – Kansas State finished the 2023 season ranked 18th&nbsp;in the Associated Press Top 25, 19th&nbsp;in the AFCA Coaches Poll and 25th&nbsp;in the College Football Playoff Top 25. The Wildcats are currently riding a streak of three seasons with at least eight wins, the only Big 12 team and one of only 11 Power 4 squads to lay that claim.&nbsp;&nbsp;

🏈 K-State inks transfer cornerback Jordan Dunbar

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Community College sophomore Olivia Sandoval has been named a second-team All-American, the NJCAA announced Tuesday.

Sandoval was a pivotal part in helping guide the Blue Dragons to their first-ever appearance in the NJCAA World Series. The sophomore from Newton hit .471 with 70 RBI and six home runs. She was second on the team with 96 total hits this spring.&nbsp;

During her time as a Blue Dragon over two seasons, Sandoval played in 111 games, and holds a .451 career batting average. She finished her career with 129 RBI and eight home runs. Sandoval ends her career with the most doubles ever hit by a HutchCC softball player, 43.

Boerema, a two-time All-Big 12 selection, earned his first Academic All-District honor with K-State as the left-hander graduated with a master's in academic advising and finished with a grade point average of 3.71. &nbsp;This season, the Litchfield, Minn., product leads the Cats with six victories on the mound and has struck out 105 batters. Boerema has compiled 200 strikeouts in his two seasons with K-State, which ranks fifth all-time.

In his first season with the Wildcats, Frost holds a record of 3-1 with a 7.49 ERA. He tossed seven scoreless innings to lead K-State to its ninth no-hitter in program history in a 4-0 shutout over Cincinnati. At K-State, the St. Louis, Mo., native owns a 3.82 GPA in communication studies.

Neighbors earned All-District honors for the second consecutive year, as he leads the bullpen with nine saves. The All-American, who owns a 3.84 GPA in professional strategic selling, stands alone in third all-time in K-State history with 20 career saves, while he is in a three-way tie for sixth in the single-season saves leaderboard.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Monarchs earned their first win of the season with a 13-3 run-rule over the Wichita Dirtbags in eight innings on Monday at Hobart-Detter Field.

The Monarchs jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second inning, and did so on just one hit.

The Dirtbags answered with a run in the top of both the 4th and 5th inning before finally scoring another run in the top of the sixth inning to make it 3-3.

Hutchinson finally got it going in the bottom of the seventh to score 4 taking advantage of passed balls and timely hitting to build the lead to 7 to 3.&nbsp;

Blake Bradford singled in a run to break the tie and give the Monarchs the lead at 4-3. That advanced Blake Brown to 3rd. Bradford then gets a stolen based setting up another scoring opportunity with Jaden Gustafson coming to bat.

Gustafson hit a ball sharply to the Dirtbags second baseman Mikel Butler, but Butler's throwing error to the plate allowed Brown and Bradford to both score.&nbsp;

In the bottom of the eighth, the wheels came off for the Dirtbags allowing Hutch to score on numerous wild pitches while finally allowing Same Wiese to score the winning final run to make it 13-3.

The Monarchs were out hit by the Dirtbags 11-4 while both teams had two errors each.&nbsp;

The teams will turn around and play Wednesday in Wichita at the Westside Athletic Field at 7 p.m.

Hutchinson (1-2) will return home to Hobart-Detter on Friday, June 7 against the Derby Twins at 7 p.m.&nbsp;

 </figure>HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Monarchs earned their first win of the season with a 13-3 run-rule over the Wichita Dirtbags in eight innings on Monday at Hobart-Detter Field.The Monarchs jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second inning, and did so on just one hit.The Dirtbags answered with a run in the top of both the 4th and 5th inning before finally scoring another run in the top of the sixth inning to make it 3-3.Hutchinson finally got it going in the bottom of the seventh to score 4 taking advantage of passed balls and timely hitting to build the lead to 7 to 3.&nbsp;Blake Bradford singled in a run to break the tie and give the Monarchs the lead at 4-3. That advanced Blake Brown to 3rd. Bradford then gets a stolen based setting up another scoring opportunity with Jaden Gustafson coming to bat.Gustafson hit a ball sharply to the Dirtbags second baseman Mikel Butler, but Butler's throwing error to the plate allowed Brown and Bradford to both score.&nbsp;In the bottom of the eighth, the wheels came off for the Dirtbags allowing Hutch to score on numerous wild pitches while finally allowing Same Wiese to score the winning final run to make it 13-3.The Monarchs were out hit by the Dirtbags 11-4 while both teams had two errors each.&nbsp;The teams will turn around and play Wednesday in Wichita at the Westside Athletic Field at 7 p.m.Hutchinson (1-2) will return home to Hobart-Detter on Friday, June 7 against the Derby Twins at 7 p.m.&nbsp;

Penn State found 'friction' between coach James Franklin, team doctor; could not determine violation

An internal review by Penn State in 2019 found evidence of "friction" between football coach James Franklin and a now-former team doctor. However, it could not determine whether Franklin violated NCAA rules or Big Ten standards by interfering with medical decisions. The 15-page document from Penn State's office of ethics and compliance was obtained by The Associated Press. Last week, a Pennsylvania jury awarded $5.25 million to Dr. Scott Lynch after he won a lawsuit against the hospital that employs him. The report left undetermined if actions by Franklin or anyone else at Penn State broke rules. It recommended further inquiry.

Austin Cindric gave Team Penske its first NASCAR win of the season along with some much-needed momentum after a whole lot of struggles. But even the victory on Sunday just outside St. Louis came with a bit of heartbreak. Ryan Blaney was leading with a lap to go when he ran out of fuel, allowing Cindric to win for the first time since the Daytona 500 in 2022. Still, the win along with Joey Logano's top-five run should give Team Penske some positive momentum. It also should be a boost to Ford, which had not won all year until Brad Keselowski last week at Darlington, and now has reached victory lane again.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — &nbsp;The defending NBC World Series champion Hutchinson Monarchs will have its home opener on Monday Hobart-Detter Field. The Monarchs host the Wichita Dirt Bags with first pitch at 7 p.m.

The Monarchs are back for their 16th season of play in Hutchinson.&nbsp;

The Monarchs are slated for 20 home games with all 20 games set to be video streamed on <a href="http://hutchpost.com">hutchpost.com</a> as well as on the <a href="http://www.monarchslive.tv">monarchslive.tv</a> channel. Glen Grunwald will have the play-by-play duties.&nbsp;

Casey Lippoldt is back for his second season as Monarchs manager after leading the Monarchs to their first-ever NBC World Series title.&nbsp;

This seasons roster includes five players that are from the Hutchinson area, including Buhler High and HutchCC alum Reed Scott, who closed out the Monarchs’ championship win with a huge strikeout over Santa Barbara Foresters. 

Another huge fan favorite is&nbsp; former Buhler standout pitcher Bradley Neill, who just wrapped up a great career at HutchCC. Other area players are pitcher Camden Cornelius from Nickerson, pitcher Derick Johnson from Inman, and Drew Bugner from Andale.&nbsp;

⚾ Monarchs open home schedule Monday 

Charlotte, NC - The <a href="https://njcaafoundation.com/landing/index" target="_blank">NJCAA Foundation</a> has announced the 2024 Champion Award recipient will be Barton Community College men's basketball player, Myles Thompson. This prestigious award will be presented during the NJCAA Foundation Awards event held on Thursday, June 6 at the Hilton Charlotte University Place at 6:30 PM ET. The event will recognize the NJCAA Male and Female Student-Athletes of the Year, the Lea Plarski Award winner, the Champion Award winners, and the Difference Maker Award winner, in addition to the 2024 class of the NJCAA Hall of Fame.&nbsp;

The Champion Award was established to honor a member or former member of the NJCAA community who exemplifies resilience, excellence, and passion.  &nbsp;

Myles Thompson began his collegiate career at Barton Community College (KS) where, as a freshman, averaged 7.1 points and 5.5 rebounds. Entering his sophomore season, he thought it would be like any&nbsp;

other year. Thompson, a 6-foot-7 Hutchinson native, played basketball his whole life and was never once worried or concerned about injury or illness. However, things took a turn six weeks before the start of his sophomore season when he fell ill. Receiving medication for a cough and fever, Thompson thought he was back on his way to Barton for a second season, but a week later, he was sick again with all symptoms returning and pain in his right ankle. After experiencing severe rigors and shaking chills, Thompson was hospitalized for 20 days, during which doctors continuously tried to figure out what was going on, and his future in basketball was in question. It was found that Thompson had a blood infection and required surgery on his leg. The surgery was a success and Thompson was headed towards recovery but the question of if and when he'd ever be able to return to basketball was still looming.&nbsp;&nbsp;

After surgery, he returned home to Hutchinson and required daily antibiotics for six weeks. Thompson attempted to return to school but due to his compromised immune system,contracted clostridium difficile and was bedridden for an additional three weeks. Thompson struggled during this time,losing 20 pounds along the way and still being unsure of his athletic future. Through countless physical therapy sessions and a daily regimen of four different antibiotics, Thompson recovered and returned to practice in February 2023.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Rededicating his time and efforts to basketball, Thompson began to work&nbsp;out and train with his former high school coach, Bryan Miller. He would wake up earlyto work out&nbsp;with the high school players in the morning and then lift weights and practice his shots in the evening. Thompson's constant efforts and determination&nbsp;allowed him to step back onto the court&nbsp;at&nbsp;Barton&nbsp;for the 2023-24 season. Through his resilience,&nbsp;character, and faith, Thompson was able to help lead the Cougars to the 2024 NJCAA Division I Men's Basketball Championship title.&nbsp;This past season, Thompson started in all 37 games for the&nbsp;Cougars,&nbsp;averaging 14.0points per game with 6.7&nbsp;rebounds.&nbsp;&nbsp;

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (AP) — Brendan Jones batted 3 for 5 and drove in three runs, David Bishop added two RBIs and Kansas State beat Southeast Missouri State 7-2 on Sunday night in the Fayetteville Regional Final of the NCAA Tournament.

Kansas State will head to Charlottesville, Virginia, to face Virginia in a best-of-three super regional series next weekend.

It's Kansas State's first trip to the super regionals in 11 years. The No. 3-seed Wildcats (35-24) went undefeated in three games at Fayetteville. Kansas State outscored opponents 33-12, the bulk coming in a 19-4 win over Louisiana Tech in a Friday night, Saturday morning game that was interrupted by weather conditions.

The Wildcats scored four in the bottom of the second and three in the third against the Redhawks.

Bishop and Danniel Rivera each singled in a run, Raphael Pelletier grounded out to force in the third and Jones singled through the right side of the infield to score Rivera for a 4-0 lead.

Kansas State used four pitchers — Cole Wisenbaker (4-0) got the win with three innings of work following starter Ty Ruhl. They scattered seven hits.

Bryce Cannon's two-run home run in the top of the eighth was all the offense produced by Southeast Missouri State (36-27).

Yuka Saso wins another US Women's Open. This one was for Japan

LANCASTER, Pa. (AP) — Yuka Saso is the U.S. Women's Open champion while playing under a different flag. She won in 2021 as a Filipina. Saso switched citizenship and delivered Japan its first Women's Open title. She started three shots behind and shot 68 as everyone collapsed around her at Lancaster Country Club. Saso wound up winning by three shots. The turning point came on the back nine when Saso made four birdies in a five-hole stretch to pull away. Saso has a Filipina mother and a Japanese father. She had to make her decision before turning 21.

No marathons as Swiatek and Gauff sprint into the French Open quarterfinals. Sinner and Alcaraz win

PARIS (AP) — Defending champion Iga Swiatek swept into the quarterfinals at Roland Garros in just 40 minutes with a 6-0, 6-0 win against Anastasia Potapova. U.S. Open champion Coco Gauff took only 60 minutes eliminate unseeded Italian Elisabetta Cocciaretto 6-1, 6-2 on Sunday. Swiatek's match started at around 11 a.m., just eight hours after men's defending champion Novak Djokovic finished his 4 1/2-hour marathon against Lorenzo Musetti at just after 3 a.m. in the latest finish in tournament history. Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Grigor Dimitrov reached the men's quarterfinals.

PARIS (AP) — Catching the right amount of sleep is no easy task in Grand Slam tennis these days — for the athletes or those watching them compete. People in the sport tend to agree that it's hardly ideal to carry on into the wee hours of the morning. The latest example is Novak Djokovic's five-set victory at the French Open against Lorenzo Musetti. Their third-round match began after 10:30 p.m. on Saturday and didn't wrap up until after 3 a.m. on Sunday. That's not great for anyone involved. The biggest problem is that no one can get on the same page when it comes to finding a fix.

Simone Biles cruises to 9th national title and gives Olympic champ Sunisa Lee a boost along the way

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — Gymnastics star Simone Biles cruised to a record ninth U.S. Championship, giving good friend Sunisa Lee a boost along the way. Lee, the 2020 Olympic champion, fell on vault early in the competition and appeared shaken. Biles, who fell on vault at the 2020 Olympics and pulled out of several events, went to Lee to lend an ear and provide a confidence boost. Lee returned and eventually finished fourth behind Biles' winning total of 172.500. Skye Blakely was second and Kayla DiCello was third. The Olympic trials are up next in Minneapolis in late June.

Caitlin Clark held to just three points as Laney-Hamilton and Jones help Liberty rout Fever 104-68

NEW YORK (AP) — Caitlin Clark had just one basket and three points in the worst game of her young pro career, and the New York Liberty routed the Indiana Fever 104-68 on Sunday night. Betnijah Laney-Hamilton scored 20 points and Jonquel Jones added 18 for the Liberty, who were nearing the end of the easy win when Clark left the game and Aliyah Boston departed a few minutes later after an awkward fall. Clark shot 1 for 10 and had five assists. The No. 1 pick in the draft played the first few minutes of the fourth quarter before exiting, holding her ear for a little bit as she left the court.

HAMILTON, Ontario (AP) — Robert MacIntyre, with father Dougie at his side as his caddie, held on to win the RBC Canadian Open on Sunday for his first PGA Tour title. Four strokes ahead entering the final round at Hamilton Golf and Country Club, MacIntyre shot a 2-under 68 to beat playing partner Ben Griffin by a stroke. On the par-4 18th, the 27-year-old Scottish left-hander two-putted for par from 12 feet, holing out from 1 1/2 feet. MacIntyre finished at 16-under 264 for the breakthrough victory in his 45th career PGA Tour start. The former McNeese State player was a member of Europe's winning 2023 Ryder Cup team and has two European tour victories. Griffin had a 65. He parred the 18th after birdieing the previous three holes.

SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) — It's not exactly uncommon for a team that gets a championship shot and falls short one year to say that it'll be back the next. But the Florida Panthers actually delivered on that promise and that's a rarity in hockey. Florida is back in the Stanley Cup Final, becoming just the second team in the last 40 years to lose in hockey's title round one season and return the following season.

Injured Kristaps Porzingis on track for return as Celtics prepare for NBA Finals against Mavericks

BOSTON (AP) — The Celtics traded for 7-footer Kristaps Porzingis this past offseason hoping he might be the missing piece to help them hoist their 18th title. But he has been a spectator for most of Boston's run to the NBA Finals after suffering a strained right calf in Game 4 of its first-round series against Miami. His team has adjusted without him, going 9-1. The short series have given Porzingis time to recover. He recently went through light 5-on-5 workouts with his teammates for the first time since the injury, the most significant signs that he is on track for a return sometime early in the matchup against his former Dallas Mavericks team.

Germany coach blasts public broadcaster for asking if there should be more white players in his team

HERZOGENAURACH, Germany (AP) — Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann says he is shocked that a public broadcaster asked participants in a survey if they would prefer more white players in the national soccer team. Nagelsmann agrees with midfielder Joshua Kimmich that the survey for German state broadcaster ARD is "absolutely racist" and says it's "madness for a public broadcaster to ask such a question." The survey of 1,304 randomly selected participants found that one in five would prefer it if more players with white skin were playing for Germany. Nagelsmann says, "We're playing a European Championship for everyone in the country. And anyone who can play top football is invited to be a national player and give their all for their country."

WICHITA, Kan.—The Wichita Wind Surge wrapped their 12-game homestand in a 6-2 defeat against the Springfield Cardinals at Riverfront Stadium. The Wind Surge finished 3-9 over the last two weeks and are 1-11 against Springfield in 2024, including 0-2 in the Turbo Tubs uniforms.

Jacob Buchberger singled home Noah Mendlinger to push Springfield ahead in the top of the second. The latter four games of this series had the Cardinals scoring first, forcing Wichita to come from behind out of the gate.

Kala’i Rosario&nbsp;tied the game at 1-1 on a solo home run over the Wind Surge bullpen to left-center field in the bottom of the fourth inning. Rosario has five home runs this season, putting him in a tie for second place on the team.

Kyler Fedko&nbsp;smacked an RBI single to left field two innings later, bringing around&nbsp;Aaron Sabato&nbsp;from second base. RJ Yeager did the same in the top of the eighth to tie the game at two apiece.

Springfield strung four more runs in the ninth inning to open the floodgates and wash out the Wind Surge on a Bryan Torres bases-clearing double and a run-scoring single from Matt Lloyd.

⚾ Springfield Cardinals rally to beat Wind Surge

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Nick Loftin hit a walk-off sacrifice fly, Nelson Velázquez hit two RBIs and the Kansas City Royals defeated the San Diego Padres 4-3 on Sunday.

Loftin's sacrifice fly came after Velázquez pinch-hit a game-tying, two-run triple with no outs in the ninth. Velázquez finished the series with four RBIs.

“It is a huge win; we had to battle all weekend against a good team,” Loftin said. “It is big to get this win before we go into a big series this week. In that last at-bat, I just wanted to get a pitch up, something I could handle. I got to pitch up, and I was able to do enough.”

The Padres won the series, but Kansas City avoided the sweep. The Royals have not been swept this season and ended a three-game skid.

Cole Ragans allowed one run on five hits in six innings with six strikeouts and two walks. It was the ninth time this season Ragans had six or more strikeouts in an outing this season. Will Klein (1-0) earned his first-career win with a scoreless ninth inning.

“It felt great. I thought I commanded my stuff today," Ragans said. “I don’t think I changed anything. Just sticking to the process and going out there and executing that is the biggest thing. In late innings, we put together good bats. These guys are relentless. It is so fun to watch and be a part of.”

Vinnie Pasquantino hit a sacrifice fly in the fourth to give Kansas City a 1-0 lead. It was his fifth RBI of the series.

Fernando Tatis Jr. hit an RBI single in the eighth to give the Padres a 2-1 lead. Manny Machado followed up with an RBI single. This season, San Diego has scored 121 runs in the eighth inning, more than any other inning. Luis Arraez tied the game with an RBI single in the fifth.

Michael King pitched seven innings of one-run ball on four hits with four strikeouts and two walks. It was the fourth time this year that King had pitched seven or more innings. Reliever Enyel De Los Santos tossed a scoreless eighth. Yuki Matsui (3-1) was tabbed with the loss.

“That’s a good team, let’s not kid ourselves," San Diego manager Mike Shildt said. “They do a heck of a job, and it was a good series, and credit to them for Friday night’s comeback because they compromised their bullpen. They got us at the end today.”

The series featured the hit leaders in the National and American leagues. Arraez recorded six hits in the series, extending an eight-game hitting streak. Bobby Witt Jr. had five hits in the series. Arraez leads the majors in the category.

(AP) — Nick Loftin hit a walk-off sacrifice fly, Nelson Velázquez hit two RBIs and the Kansas City Royals defeated the San Diego Padres 4-3 on Sunday.Loftin's sacrifice fly came after Velázquez pinch-hit a game-tying, two-run triple with no outs in the ninth. Velázquez finished the series with four RBIs.“It is a huge win; we had to battle all weekend against a good team,” Loftin said. “It is big to get this win before we go into a big series this week. In that last at-bat, I just wanted to get a pitch up, something I could handle. I got to pitch up, and I was able to do enough.”The Padres won the series, but Kansas City avoided the sweep. The Royals have not been swept this season and ended a three-game skid.Cole Ragans allowed one run on five hits in six innings with six strikeouts and two walks. It was the ninth time this season Ragans had six or more strikeouts in an outing this season. Will Klein (1-0) earned his first-career win with a scoreless ninth inning.“It felt great. I thought I commanded my stuff today," Ragans said. “I don’t think I changed anything. Just sticking to the process and going out there and executing that is the biggest thing. In late innings, we put together good bats. These guys are relentless. It is so fun to watch and be a part of.”Vinnie Pasquantino hit a sacrifice fly in the fourth to give Kansas City a 1-0 lead. It was his fifth RBI of the series.Fernando Tatis Jr. hit an RBI single in the eighth to give the Padres a 2-1 lead. Manny Machado followed up with an RBI single. This season, San Diego has scored 121 runs in the eighth inning, more than any other inning. Luis Arraez tied the game with an RBI single in the fifth.Michael King pitched seven innings of one-run ball on four hits with four strikeouts and two walks. It was the fourth time this year that King had pitched seven or more innings. Reliever Enyel De Los Santos tossed a scoreless eighth. Yuki Matsui (3-1) was tabbed with the loss.“That’s a good team, let’s not kid ourselves," San Diego manager Mike Shildt said. “They do a heck of a job, and it was a good series, and credit to them for Friday night’s comeback because they compromised their bullpen.
