HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Monarchs closed out the regular season strong with a come-from-behind 5-3 win on Saturday at Hobart-Detter Field.&nbsp;

Jaden Gustafson came in for Zerick Warren after the Monarchs had allowed Kingman to regain the 3-2 lead in the top of the eighth.

Gustafson drove in Sam Wiese and Jovan Suarez to give the Monarchs a 4-3 lead. Brett Smajstrla added an insurance run scoring Gustafson to score the games final run.

Jace Minor pitched five strong innings before giving way to Brayden McClure, Garrett Fromer, Carson Cornelius and Reed Scott, who each pitched one inning.

Cornelius earned the win, while Scott was credited with the save.

The Monarchs will open play at 6 p.m. on Thursday in the first round of the NBC World Series at Eck Stadium.&nbsp;

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Michael Wacha pitched seven scoreless innings, Bobby Witt Jr. homered and drove in two runs and the Kansas City Royals beat the Chicago White Sox 7-1 on Friday night.

Witt drove Chris Flexen’s inside fastball above the left field bullpen in the first inning for his 17th homer.

“I was just trying to be on time with the heater,” Witt said. “Whenever I’m on time, I feel like good things happen.”

Royals manager Matt Quatraro liked what he saw.

“It was nice to see — a fastball on the inner part of the plate — him turn on it, get us going and get himself going,” he said.

Witt added an RBI in the third on the second of his three hits for a 2-0 lead. Since June 24, he has hit safely in 17 of 19 games, batting .403 with 12 extra-base hits.

Wacha (7-6) induced inning-ending double plays with runners at third in the first and third innings.

“Big-time double plays to get me out of those jams,” Wacha said. “It took a little bit to kind of find a groove. Just getting that command back on those pitches after the (All-Star break) layoff will be key.”

Wacha struck out seven while allowing four hits and a walk, and is 6-2 in his last 10 starts, surrendering no more than three earned runs in each.

“Overall, the results were great,” Wacha said. “I felt like I was able to make pitches when I needed to, get some strikeouts when I needed to.”

It was a tough night for White Sox hitters.

“Wacha’s very difficult to hit, especially when he’s got his changeup going,” White Sox manager Pedro Grifol said.

Michael Massey’s two-out, two-run single highlighted the Royals’ five-run fifth. Kansas City has won five of its last seven.

“Massey’s hit was the difference,” Quatraro said. “But just one good at-bat after another.”

Flexen (2-9) walked four and hit a batter in the fifth. He threw 4 2/3 innings, allowing seven runs on four hits and five walks. In 13 starts since last winning May 8, he is 0-6.

“Obviously fell apart at the end,” Flexen said. “Kind of lost the feel there. The walks are inexcusable.”

Chicago’s Korey Lee homered in the eighth, his ninth.

Brooks Baldwin singled in his first at-bat in his major league debut, as the White Sox lost their fifth straight.

WICHITA, Kan.—The Wichita Wind Surge kept things close in an 8-5 loss to the Frisco RoughRiders at Riverfront Stadium. Wichita scored three straight through the eighth and ninth innings to show some fight against the top team in the Texas League.

Frisco struck first in the top of the first on a Cody Freeman RBI single to left, bringing around Alejandro Osuna from second.&nbsp;Ben Ross&nbsp;followed in the bottom of the second on a run-scoring knock of his own that found the center field grass in front of Osuna where&nbsp;Carson McCusker&nbsp;beat the throw to the plate.

Josh Hatcher drilled a three-run blast, his seventh of the season, to straightaway center in the top of the third to put the RoughRiders ahead 4-1. Keyber Rodriguez added one more on a single, which he pulled to left to give Frisco a four-run lead through two and a half.

Jeferson Morales&nbsp;found the gap in right-center for his team-leading 18th double of the season, giving&nbsp;Jake Rucker&nbsp;the green light to come around from first in the bottom of the fifth.

Max Acosta tallied the tenth hit for the RoughRiders on an RBI single sent near Morales in left. Aaron Zavala crossed the plate, and Acosta moved up 90 feet with two outs in the top of the seventh. Frainyer Chavez doubled in two more two batters later toward the right field corner, putting Frisco up 8-2 heading into the stretch.

Morales led off the bottom of the eighth on a triple to right field before scoring on a wild pitch to put the Wind Surge within five. A pair of walks and a single loaded the bases before a strikeout ended the frame with everybody stranded. A bases-loaded walk and a fielder’s choice would make the score 8-5 when down to their final outs in the ninth before a swinging strikeout ended the game.

Marco Raya&nbsp;is 0-3 on the year after taking the loss, surrendering five earned runs on seven hits and four walks while striking out five hitters in four innings.

At 156, that matches the highest 36-hole score of his pro career. He set a Masters record by making the cut for the 24th straight time. But he missed the cut at the last three majors and it wasn't very close. Woods says he needs more tournaments to be sharp. But playing more risks not being ready for the majors. Former NFL star Lawrence Taylor charged with failing to update address on sex offender registry

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — Hall of Fame linebacker Lawrence Taylor has been charged in Florida with failing to update his address on the state's sex offender registry. Court records show the former New York Giants linebacker turned himself in to the Broward County Sheriff's Office on Wednesday and was released with no bail. He entered a not guilty plea. It's the second time he's been charged with the offence. Taylor pleaded guilty in New York in 2011 to misdemeanor sexual misconduct charges. He was sentenced to six years of probation and ordered to register as a sex offender.

Allisha Gray becomes first player to win both 3-point and skills competition at WNBA All-Star

PHOENIX (AP) — Allisha Gray became the first player in WNBA history to win both the 3-point and skills competition in the same year, capturing both titles Friday night. The Atlanta Dream guard topped Jonquel Jones 22-21 in the 3-point shootout finals after edging Sophie Cunningham in the skills competition by just over 2 seconds. Jones was looking to become the first post-player to win the 3-point contest. She also made the finals in 2021 before losing to four-time champion Allie Quigley. Jones had a chance to win the contest, but her last shot — the two-point money — ball fell short. She scored 25 points in the opening round — tops amongst the five competitors. Gray had 23 points.

The Hawkeyes knocked out the Tigers this past year in the Elite Eight. Injured and locked-out fans file first lawsuits over Copa America stampede and melee

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — The first lawsuits have been filed in connection with last weekend's melees that broke out when fans without tickets forced their way into the Copa America soccer final at South Florida's Hard Rock Stadium. Court records show that at least four lawsuits have been filed. In one, a woman who had flown in her father from Colombia for the game says she suffered knee, shoulder and chest injuries when she was shoved against a barrier. Others are suing because they had spent thousands to attend the game only to be turned away because of the security issues. The stadium and tournament organizers have previously denied wrongdoing.

Churchill Downs lifts suspension of trainer Bob Baffert following Medina Spirit's failed drug test

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Churchill Downs has rescinded its extended suspension of Bob Baffert, allowing the Hall of Fame trainer to resume racing his horses at the historic track and partner facilities after more than three years of banishment for a failed postrace drug test of 2021 Kentucky Derby winner Medina Spirit. Friday's announcement comes after Baffert issued a statement in which he took responsibility for now-deceased colt Medina Spirit's failed drug test after crossing the finish line first in the 147th Kentucky Derby in May 2021.

Durant returns to practice with US basketball team, 1 week before Paris Olympics

HUTCHINSON, Kan. - The Hutchinson Monarchs put together timely hitting in the first two innings of their Friday night home stand game versus the Kingman Islanders to take a 2-0 lead and then got superb pitching from both their starter Cole Toureau and three strong innings of relief from Jack Mount to edge the Islanders for a 2-1 victory.

In doing so, the Monarchs clinched a tie for the Jayhawk Summer League second half Championship. 30 minutes later they celebrated winning the league outright when they found out the Wichita Dirtbags had defeated the Kansas Cannons 3-2.

Will Edmundson tripled with one out in the bottom of the first and then was sacrificed home by Blake Bradford to give Hutch the early 1-0 lead.

Mac Bowie then earned his first hit and RBI as a Monarch to score Zurich Warren in the second inning for the Monarchs second run to lead 2-0. Bowie also advanced to third on a successful hit-and-run by Brett Smajstrla but was stranded at third as Cooper Wesslund ground out to third for the final out of the inning.

But that was all the offense that the Monarchs needed as &nbsp;Toureau was extremely sharp stricking out seven Islanders over the course of the six inning he pitched only giving up one run and two hits in his outing to earn the win. Jack Mount slammed the door shut on Kingman with three perfect innings of relief including stricking out the side in the seventh inning and getting five strikeouts over his three innings of relief.

Kingman's Mason Munz was just as impressive in giving up only four hits in his seven innings pitched but the Bowie RBI in the second inning was enough for Hutch to get the win.

The next and final regular season game of the 2024 will be Saturday night versus Kingman again with first pitch at 7pm.

It was announced that the Monarchs will begin the task of defending their 2023 NBC World Series Championship on Thursday, July 25th at 6pm vs an opponent to be announced later at Eck Stadium on the campus of Wichita State University to open the 90th annual NBC World Series for 2024.

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs have set a deadline of six months from now to decide on a plan for the future of Arrowhead Stadium, whether that means renovating their iconic home or building an entirely new stadium in Kansas or Missouri.

After a joint ballot initiative with the Royals to help fund facilities by extending a sales tax was rejected by voters in Jackson County, Missouri, earlier this year, the teams agreed to move forward with separate plans. Now, they are waiting for the leaders in both states that comprise the Kansas City metro to put forward their best pitches.

<a href="https://apnews.com/article/kansas-city-chiefs-royals-new-stadiums-3441b3084c8efab00057f593f4d9b95e">Legislators in Kansas approved a plan</a>&nbsp;last month that would finance up to 70% of the cost of new stadiums for pro sports franchises with an eye on luring the Chiefs across the state line. Missouri Gov. Mike Parson responded a week later by saying he expects his state to put together an aid plan by the end of the year to keep the teams on its side of the metro.

“This is a generational decision. This is going to impact the future of this franchise for generations,” Chiefs president Mark Donovan said Friday, the day that veterans reported to training camp at Missouri Western in St. Joseph, Missouri.

“We have to get this right,” Donovan said. “We are going to do the due-diligence. We are going to take our time and do it right. But there is a reality to the timing. You can only take so much time to get it right. And that window is starting to close.”

The Chiefs and Royals have played for more than five decades at the Truman Sports Complex, where a lease agreement calls for the use of a sales tax for their upkeep. And while Arrowhead Stadium and Kauffman Stadium remain beloved by fans, the reality is both are becoming outdated, and it’s unclear how long they would last even if they were renovated again.

Royals owner John Sherman has said his team will not play at Kauffman beyond the 2030 season, preferring instead to build a new downtown ballpark. The Chiefs initially hoped to renovate Arrowhead but are becoming more open to building new.

Chiefs owner Clark Hunt has long hoped to host a Super Bowl, and that would be more likely with a new stadium. If it included a retractable roof, the stadium also could land lucrative events such as the Final Four and college football playoff games.

One factor working against Missouri is its uncertain political environment. Parson cannot run for reelection due to term limits, and that means the Chiefs must wait until later this fall to know who they would be working with going forward.

“Really the deadline is how can you be up and running in a new facility or a renovated facility for January of the 2031 season,” Donovan said. “You’re looking at an existing structure, something we’ve done a lot of work on, there is a little less lead time. If you are talking about something new, it extends the lead time a year and a half. So we feel like we’re in the window now to get something done in the next six months to be in a good position. That’s the timeline we’re working on.”

Donovan said another factor in the decision is quite simple: real estate.

If the Chiefs build new, they want enough land for 20,000 parking spaces, so the franchise can retain its well-known tailgating tradition. They also would have to decide whether a new training facility — their current one is located near Arrowhead Stadium but is also becoming outdated — would be built near a potential new stadium or stand alone elsewhere.

“It’s important to understand that we are playing Chiefs football home games at GEHA Field at Arrowhead (into) 2031. That is our plan,” Donovan said. “What we have to have is somewhere to play our games for the ’31 season. To do that, we have to back up to, when do you build? If you’re renovating, how do you do it over multiple seasons while still playing there? A lot of factors go into that. We need to have options, and we need to have those options to a point of definition to make a decision.”

The official start to Chiefs Training Camp is just around the corner as rookies and quarterbacks wrapped up their final practice today at Missouri Western State University.

Chiefs President Mark Donovan says it's exciting to be back in St. Joseph and on the Missouri Western campus for another year of camp.

"There's a lot of excitement within our organization, there's a lot of excitement around the team, the players, the coach's, etc., they're excited to be back," Donovan tells reporters. "And they're excited to be back in St. Joe who just treat us so well every single year, there's a reason we keep coming back."

As Chiefs Training Camp begins a looming question is will the reigning Super Bowl champions return to St. Joseph next year.

This is the last guaranteed year Missouri Western is under contract to host the Chiefs for training camp.

When asked if the Chiefs would like to return, Donovan counters with the question why wouldn't they?

"It's been a great partnership, it's been something that as I said we're proud to have been here 14 of the last 15 years, we expect that to continue," Donovan says. "We'll do what we always do, and it's a great relationship, because we will get through this camp (and) at the end of camp we'll sit down and talk about what went well, where are the challenges, what was better this year than last year, what was worse than last year, what can we do to improve?"

As for this year's camp, the first practice open to the public is on Sunday at 9:15. There will be a $5 admission fee and tickets must be acquired online.

Final practice for rookies and quarterbacks provides extra opportunity

Ahead of the official start to Chiefs Training Camp at Missouri Western rookies and quarterbacks had one final practice before the full team reports to campus.

Several veterans, including Patrick Mahomes and Carson Wentz, sat out today to give younger players valuable reps.

Quarterback Chris Oladokuen says while getting extra reps is great, everyone is critical.

"It's good to see live color and then go in there and get in the classroom and see and make those corrections," Oladokun tells reporters following practice. "It's really important for me especially, when Pat and Carson come back those reps get pretty short, so every rep is critical for me."

TROON, Scotland —Former Hutchinson Community College golfer Dominic Clemons' first-ever major championship came to a close on Friday at the Royal Troon Golf Club.

Clemons missed the cut at the 152nd edition of The Open Championship after carding a 7-over 78 second round on Friday.

The former NJCAA All-American finished tied for 136th overall with a 13-over two-day total.&nbsp;

Clemons did finish above some notable names on the leaderboard, including Tiger Woods (+14), Wyndham Clark (+16) and John Daly (Withdrew).

Karma and Gary Mason have given a lead gift of $100,000 to support the Wichita State Women&apos;s Bowling facility enhancement project. This $300,000 initiative will include a new locker room, conference room and offices for coaching staff inside the Rhatigan Student Center. &quot;Gary and I are thrilled to kick off this fundraiser for Women&apos;s Bowling,&quot; said Karma Mason. &quot;This program was deeply enriching to my own life, and I have no doubt it will continue to enrich the lives of many talented young women for years to come.&quot; Mason was recruited to the women&apos;s bowling program at Wichita State in 1975, and the team went on to win the first-ever national collegiate team championship held that year. Since that first win, the program has claimed a total of 11 Intercollegiate Team Championships (1975, 1977, 1978, 1986, 1990, 1994, 2005, 2007, 2009, 2021, 2024) and six Intercollegiate Singles Champions (2006, 2007, 2009, 2017, 2023, 2024). Mason is the only person in the program&apos;s history to be on three national bowling championship teams. In July 2024, Women&apos;s Bowling officially became Wichita State University&apos;s 16th sport, joining the most competitive women&apos;s bowling league in the country as an affiliate member of Conference USA. The soon-to-be junior is already a two-time all-state selection for the Teutons. She helped guide Inman to a fourth place finish at the state tournament in each of her first two seasons.

University of Utah is a new member to the Big 12 Conference and is located in Salt Lake City.

🏐 Inman's Suttyn Harris commits to Utah

WICHITA, Kan. — Hutchinson High School graduate, Caleb Walker, will once again compete in The Basketball Tournament this weekend for the AfterShocks.

Walker graduated from Hutch High in 2008 before going on to play two seasons at Butler Community College in El Dorado and then his final two seasons at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln.&nbsp;

Walker moved to Hutchinson when he was 13 after growing up in Kansas City. He won four consecutive state titles as a linebacker on the Salthawks' football team during it's dynasty. He averaged over 19 points and nearly 10 rebounds per game as a senior for the Salthawk basketball team.

The 34-year-old was a crucial piece to the AfterShocks' success in TBT last summer. He is currently playing overseas in France.

The AfterShocks are the alumni team for Wichita State University. They are 11-4 all-time in TBT, including a loss in the quarterfinals last summer.

PRETTY PRAIRIE, Kan. — Kansas Largest Night Rodeo is halfway complete, and the top spot in the bull riding is Hutchinson native, Adam (AJ) Mast. Mast scored an 86-point ride on Buetler &amp; Son Rodeo's Bomb Squad on Thursday night. 

The 19-year-old is in his first year on the PRCA circuit.

Mast is one of three qualified rides through the first two nights in bull riding.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Kansas Cannons scored four runs in the top half of the fourth inning Thursday to stop the Hutchinson Monarchs nine-game winning streak, 5-3.

The Monarchs out-hit the Cannons on the night and cut the lead to two with three consecutive hits in the bottom of the the fifth when Blake Bradford knocked in Jaden Gustafson and Will Edmunson both singled with one-out in the inning.

The Monarchs pitching gave up nine walks which led to two runs scored for the Cannons.

The Cannons Ruger Bravo earned the win going seven innings on the mound. Rod Whaley came on in relief only giving up one hit over the last two inning. Ian Regal took the loss for the Monarchs.

Hutchinson's lead in the Jayhawk League now is two games over the Cannons in the second half standings with two more games set for Friday and Saturday night against the Kingman Islanders.&nbsp;

⚾ Cannons outscore Monarchs with big inning

TROON, Scotland (AP) — Daniel Brown delivered the biggest surprise of them all at the British Open. The wind changed direction at Royal Troon and seemed to fool everyone except Shane Lowry. He played the links a few weeks ago and knew how to handle the wind from the opposite direction. Lowry had a 66 for his best start ever in a major. And then came Brown, a 29-year-old from England. Playing in the second-to-last group, he birdied two of the last three holes for a 65 to lead in his major championship debut. Tiger Woods had a 79. Rory McIlroy shot 78.

TROON, Scotland (AP) — Tiger Woods had another disappointing round at a major championship. Woods' 8-over 79 on Thursday at Royal Troon left him in danger of missing the cut for a third straight time at the British Open. Woods says "I need to shoot something in the mid-60s tomorrow to get something going on the weekend.” Woods now has 14 consecutive rounds in the majors without breaking par dating to a 69 in the second round of the 2022 PGA Championship. It’s his highest score to start a major since an 80 in the 2015 U.S. Open at Chambers Bay.

UNDATED (AP) — EA Sports College Football 25, among the most highly anticipated sports video games of all time, has flooded the market. The game officially launched Friday, with EA Sports increasing its server capacity during early access to handle the crush of players. EA Sports has said its goal for the game was “to feel like a love letter to college football and its fans.” Gamers waited more than a decade for the franchise’s next installment after it was halted in 2013 amid questions about compensating athletes depicted in the game.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Los Angeles Clippers have sent Russell Westbrook to the Utah Jazz in a sign-and-trade deal for point guard Kris Dunn. ESPN reports that the Jazz are expected to buy out the former NBA MVP’s contract so Westbrook can sign with the Denver Nuggets. Utah also got the right to swap second-round draft picks in 2030, the draft rights to center Balsa Koprivica and cash. Westbrook is a nine-time All-Star and the 2017 MVP with Oklahoma City. He was traded for the fifth time in his career.

LOGAN, Utah (AP) — Utah State has fired coach Blake Anderson for “significant violations of his contractual obligations.” Thursday's move came 16 days after the school informed Anderson that he would be dismissed following an external review that found he failed to comply with Title IX policies regarding the reporting of sexual misconduct cases. Nate Dreiling, who had been Utah State’s defensive coordinator, was elevated on July 2 to interim coach for the upcoming season. Anderson was given two weeks to respond to the university’s decision. Anderson’s attorney says all legal remedies will be pursued on his behalf.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — A key city council vote is paving the way to give the Tampa Bay Rays a new 30,000-seat ballpark as part of a $6.5 billion redevelopment project in St. Petersburg, Florida. The new park would guarantee the team stays for at least 30 years. WICHITA, Kan. -&nbsp;The American Athletic Conference has unveiled the home-away pairings for the 2024-25 Wichita State men&apos;s basketball season.
 
The league will once again conduct an 18-game schedule with each team assigned six home-and-home series, plus three home-only and three road-only opponents.
 
The Shockers will not visit UAB, East Carolina or Tulane this season, while Florida Atlantic, Rice and Temple&nbsp;miss out on a trip to the Roundhouse.
 
Matchups are annually determined by television inventory and contractual requirements, competitive issues/NET implications and geographic rivalries.
&nbsp;
The complete 2024-25 men&apos;s basketball composite schedule with dates and times will be announced at a later date. The first conference play dates will be December 31, 2024&nbsp;and will run through March 9. The 2025 American Athletic Conference Men&apos;s Basketball Championship will feature a 13-team tournament and be held at Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas, March 12-16.

The American Athletic Conference announced the home-away matchups for the 2024-25 women&apos;s basketball season Thursday afternoon.
&nbsp;
The conference schedule will again be 18 games with each team playing six home-and-home series as well as three home-only and three road-only opponents.
&nbsp;
Wichita State will host Rice for the first time ever and Charlotte for the first time since 2004 after only playing them on the road during their first year in The American.
&nbsp;
The Shockers will play UAB, Tulsa and UTSA twice for the second-straight season and will also face Charlotte, Tulane and North Texas both at home and on the road.
&nbsp;
Wichita State is hosting South Florida and Florida Atlantic in addition to Rice as home-only opponents and will travel to East Carolina, Temple and Memphis for their road-only matchups.
 
Conference play begins late December, and the AAC Women&apos;s Basketball Tournament has been set for March 8-12.

A total of 73 Hutchinson Community College student-athletes were named to the NJCAA All-Academic teams for the 2023-24 academic season, which was released on Thursday.
The Blue Dragons had 28 student-athletes on the NJCAA&apos;s first-team list, which represents student-athletes with 4.00 grade-point averages. The Blue Dragons had 21 athletes on the second team, which represents grades of 3.80 to 3.99. The Blue Dragons had 24 all-academic third-team student-athletes with GPAs ranking from 3.60 to 3.79.
Sixteen student-athletes from the pool of 73 earned honors in multiple sports.
Baseball had the most individual athletes earn all-academic honors with 17. Women&apos;s Track and Field had 12, while softball and women&apos;s soccer had 11 each. The Blue Dragon women&apos;s soccer team had the most first-team honorees with seven players earning that honor.
Blue Dragon Softball had the highest of all team GPAs in 2023-24 with an aggregate 3.67 team GPA.
Eight Blue Dragons teams earned NJCAA team academic honors. To earn team GPA awards, a team must have an aggregate 3.00 GPA to qualify.
Blue Dragon teams earning academic honors are: Softball (3.67), women&apos;s Soccer (3.52), women&apos;s cross country (3.35), baseball (3.19), women&apos;s outdoor track and field (3.16), women&apos;s basketball (3.13), women&apos;s indoor track and field (3.10) and men&apos;s cross country (3.09).

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Major League Baseball has released its schedule for the 2025 season. The Kansas City Royals open the season at Kauffman Stadium against the Cleveland Guardians on Thursday, March 27.

After the Royals play three games against the Guardians, they will travel to Milwaukee to face the Brewers for three games.&nbsp;

Kansas City will have two seven-game homestands, one in early April and one in early May.

The Royals will have a 10-game road trip in April with trips to Cleveland, New York and Detroit.

COLBY, Kan. &ndash; The Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference has announced a partnership with Adidas as the exclusive brand provider for the KJCCC and with Game One&mdash;the largest national team dealer for Adidas apparel&mdash;as its designated supplier of Adidas products. These new partnerships run through June of 2029.

Some 6,000 fans, mostly students, gathered in Allen Fieldhouse at 12:01 a.m., on a Tuesday in October in 1985 for the inaugural &quot;Late Night with Larry Brown.&quot;&nbsp; &nbsp; At that time,&nbsp;<dfn style="text-align: start;color: rgb(73, 73, 73);background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);font-size: 16px;"><a href="https://kuathletics.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/coaches/bill-self/727" rel="smarttag" style="color: rgb(0, 81, 186);">Bill Self</a></dfn>&nbsp;was a young KU graduate assistant in the early stages of molding his Hall of Fame career in coaching. Danny Manning was a promising forward primed to take the Big Eight Conference by storm. Brown was in the process of building the team that would make it to the Final Four in Dallas that March, eventually winning the national championship two years later under the moniker &apos;Danny and the Miracles.&apos; &nbsp; Little did Brown know that in the 39 years after his brainchild barely registered a blip on the radar, Late Night in the Phog would become a cornerstone of one of the most successful and fanatically-followed basketball programs in the nation. &nbsp; In fact, at Late Night in 2003, Self&apos;s first Late Night as KU head coach, Brown delivered one of the most memorable speeches in Kansas basketball history, &quot;There is no better place to coach. There is no better place to go to school. There is no better place to play. It&apos;s because of you people here.&quot; &nbsp; Late Night is highlighted by skits, lip-syncs and dance routines performed by the players themselves. Over the years, the crowds, all capacity gatherings since 1991, have witnessed hundreds of performances and ferocious dunks as Kansas prepared for its first official practice of the season. &nbsp; Since 1988-89, the Jayhawk women&apos;s basketball team has taken on a greater share of the Late Night load and shares center court with the KU men&apos;s team. &nbsp; The pep band, cheerleaders, dance team and mascots are also involved in the pre-scrimmage entertainment. &nbsp; Prior to the 2005-06 season, the NCAA?decided to change the season-opening scrimmage time from midnight to earlier in the evening to create a more fan-friendly experience. Now fans of all ages can watch the festivities.</div>

The average score was 3-over par for the field.The 22-year-old amateur is currently tied for 128th among the field. He finished his round with two birdies, one on the Par 4 seventh and another on the Par 4 13th. Clemons carded a 4-over on the front nine and a 2-over on the back.<figure>
