&nbsp; MANHATTAN, Kan. — K-State baseball returns to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2013, as the Wildcats received an at-large bid and will compete in the NCAA Fayetteville Regional, hosted by No. 5 national seed Arkansas, starting Friday, May 31.

K-State (32-24) was selected as the No. 3 seed in the Fayetteville Regional and will take on the second-seeded Louisiana Tech Bulldogs (45-17) on Friday at 7 p.m. at Baum-Walker Stadium., in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament.

This is the program's fifth NCAA Tournament appearance in school history and the first under head coach&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/baseball/roster/coaches/pete-hughes/2461">Pete Hughes</a>.

The Cats will send lefty graduate&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/baseball/roster/owen-boerema/11457">Owen Boerema</a>&nbsp;(6-3, 4.91 ERA) to the mound for the opening round and will go head-to-head with the Bulldogs' left-hander Luke Nichols (4-3, 3.74 ERA). With 99 strikeouts on the year, Boerema set a single-season senior-class record, breaking Jim Ripley's 2004 record of 90.

K-State and Louisiana Tech will meet for the fifth time in program history, with the Cats holding a 3-1 edge since the series start in 1986. The two squads last faced off on March 6, 2004, which led to K-State's 7-4 victory and extended its win streak to three over La Tech.

The winner of the Kansas State-Louisiana Tech game will play the winner of top-seeded Arkansas (43-14) and fourth-seeded SEMO (34-25) on Saturday, June 1.

The winner of the Fayetteville Regional will play the winner of the Charlottesville Regional in the best-of-three-game super regional from June 7-9 or June 8-10. No. 12 national seed and top-seeded Virginia (41-15) hosts second-seeded Mississippi State (38-21), third-seeded St. John's (37-16-1) and fourth-seeded Pennsylvania (24-23) in Charlottesville, Va.

&nbsp; WICHITA, Kan. — Wichita State softball will be one of 16 teams to compete in the 2025 Shriners Children's Clearwater Invitational presented by EvoShield, Feb. 13-16, 2025,&nbsp;at the Eddie C. Moore Complex.

Considered one of the premier softball tournaments in the country, Wichita State will be making its first ever appearance at the Clearwater Invitational. Now in its sixth year, the 2025 Shriners Children's Clearwater Invitational field features Alabama, Auburn, Charlotte, Clemson, Florida State, Kentucky, Liberty, Missouri, Ohio State, Oklahoma State, San Diego State, Texas A&amp;M, UCF, UCLA, Virginia and Wichita State.

Fourteen of the 16 teams are 2024 NCAA Regional participants. Alabama, Oklahoma State and UCLA advanced to the Women's College World Series.

All games will be featured on the ESPN family of networks. K-State quickly hits the road for the first time in 2024 during week two as the Cats travel to Tulane to face the Green Wave on Saturday, September 7, in an 11 a.m. game that will be broadcast on either ESPN or ESPN2. The contest in New Orleans marks the second-straight season the Wildcats play a road non-conference game, their first time doing so since a three-year span in 2015 (UTSA), 2016 (Stanford) and 2017 (Vanderbilt).

🏈 K-State non-conference slate headlined by FOX College Football Friday

LAWRENCE, Kan.&nbsp;– The 2024 Kansas Football season is under 100 days away, as Kansas’ non-conference game times and tv designations were announced by the Big 12 Conference on Thursday. The slate is highlighted by a Friday night ESPN Primetime showdown vs. UNLV on Friday, September 13 at 6 p.m.

Kansas will kick off its 2024 season on Thursday, August 29 against Lindenwood at 7 p.m. at Children’s Mercy Park in Kansas City, Kansas on ESPN+. The season opener vs. Lindenwood will open Kansas’ 133rd&nbsp;season of football, while Lindenwood plays against its first-ever FBS opponent.

The Jayhawks will then travel to Champaign, Illinois to take on the Illinois Fighting Illini on Saturday, September 7 at 6 p.m. on FS1. The matchup will be the second in as many years between the two teams, as Kansas defeated Illinois, 34-23, on Sept. 8, 2023, in Lawrence.

In a rematch of the 2023 Guaranteed Rate Bowl, Kansas will host UNLV at Children’s Mercy Park on Friday, September 13 at 6 p.m. on ESPN. The game will serve as Kansas’ second home weekday ESPN Primetime game in as many years. The Jayhawks previously defeated Illinois in 2023, which was Kansas’ first weekday ESPN home primetime game since 1995. The game versus UNLV was previously scheduled for Saturday, September 14.

All six of Kansas’ 2024 home games will be played in the Kansas City metro area due to construction on the university’s Gateway District. Charges against world's top golfer Scottie Scheffler dropped after arrest outside PGA Championship

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Criminal charges against Scottie Scheffler have been dismissed, ending a legal saga that began with images of the world's top golfer being arrested and handcuffed in Louisville during the PGA Championship. Jefferson County Attorney Mike O'Connell, a local prosecutor, asked a judge Wednesday afternoon to drop the four charges against Scheffler. Scheffler was not required to be in the courtroom Wednesday. Scheffler was charged with a felony for assaulting a police officer with his vehicle, along with three misdemeanors. Scheffler has said he simply misunderstood the commands coming from traffic officers.

A 17-person committee chaired by John Thorn, Major League Baseball's official historian, met six times as part of the meticulous process of examining statistics from seven Negro Leagues from 1920-1948. Cincinnati Reds pitcher Hunter Greene calls the move "long overdue." Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Andrew McCutchen says he is doing some "deep diving" into some Negro Leagues players that he hadn't heard of before.

WICHITA, Kan.—The Wichita Wind Surge triumphed 4-2 over the Springfield Cardinals at Riverfront Stadium. The victory is the first Wichita win over Springfield in 2024, as they entered the game 0-7 against the Cardinals.

Wednesday’s first four innings continued the pitcher’s duel from the night before. The first hit didn’t come until&nbsp;Aaron Sabato&nbsp;lined a single to left field in the last of the fifth. Springfield threatened by loading the bases in the top of the sixth on two singles and a walk before&nbsp;Austin Brice&nbsp;entered in from the bullpen to record an inning-ending strikeout.

Further back-and-forth donuts followed on the scoreboard until&nbsp;Kala’i Rosario&nbsp;stepped up to the plate with the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth. On a 2-2 pitch, the Wind Surge left fielder slugged a grand slam to the left field berm to give Wichita a 4-0 lead heading into the ninth. The slam was the second such in 2024 by a Wind Surge hitter.

Springfield would fight beak and claw when down to their final outs, tallying a pair of run-scoring singles. After putting runners on second and third, the former being the tying run,&nbsp;Taylor Floyd&nbsp;retired the next two batters on a swinging strikeout and an unassisted putout to secure the win for Wichita.

Jared Solomon&nbsp;earned his first win with the Wind Surge, striking out two batters against three hits, two earned runs, and a walk in one and one-thirds innings pitched.&nbsp;Taylor Floyd&nbsp;picked up his first save of 2024 after following Solomon in the top of the ninth and retiring his lone two batters faced.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Nelson Velázquez homered twice, Salvador Perez hit his team-leading 10th homer of the season and the Kansas City Royals snapped a three-game skid with a 6-1 win over the Minnesota Twins on Wednesday night.

Velázquez’s first homer came in Kansas City’s four-run third inning. After Minnesota jumped out to an early 1-0 lead, the Royals countered with four runs off Twins starter Bailey Ober.

Perez drove in the go-ahead run with a double to left, and Veláquez knocked in Perez two batters later with a two-run shot to center for a 4-1 lead.

“The at-bats against Ober were good,” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. "I think even early on, you could tell we had an approach. We were trying to get certain pitches we were looking for. Some of them we didn’t miss. When you drive the ball out of the park, you get instant offense, you get instant runs on the board, and you get out to a lead, it really helps.”

Perez hit a solo homer in the fifth inning and Veláquez followed with his seventh homer of the season to give the Royals a 6-1 lead.

That was plenty of run support for Royals right-hander Seth Lugo (9-1), who earned his fourth win in as many starts. Lugo allowed one run on six hits in six innings for his career-best ninth win.

“They’ve got a bunch of good hitters in the lineup, so I couldn’t really get to a part where I could just cruise,” Lugo said. “They made me work out there and they put together a lot of good at-bats. Being able to get six after that and the W, it feels great.”

Lugo's ERA dropped to an MLB-best 1.72, the lowest ERA by a Royals pitcher through 12 starts in team history.

It was the second time this season the Royals roughed up Ober (5-3). The Twins' right-hander also surrendered three homers and eight total runs against Kansas City in his first start of the season on March 31.

Ober allowed six runs on nine hits in five innings on Wednesday.

“Not as sharp as normal Bailey that we get almost every time,” Twins manager Rocco Baldelli said. “He had to work hard.”

The victory helped Kansas City avoid what would have been a season-high four-game losing streak. The Royals have lost three straight games three times this season.

Twins third baseman Jose Miranda drove in the game’s first run with a sacrifice fly to deep left field. It was the third straight game in the series that Miranda had the first RBI of the game. He homered in the third inning of Monday’s series opener for a 2-0 lead, and had a two-run single to open the scoring in Tuesday’s win.

LAWRENCE, Kan. –&nbsp;University of Kansas Director of Athletics Travis Goff has signed a 7-year contract extension that will keep him at KU through 2031.

Additionally, Allen Fieldhouse is currently in the final phase of a $50 million renovation that began in 2023 under Goff’s leadership.

KU announces contract extension for Director of Athletics Travis Goff

NEW YORK (AP) — Josh Gibson became Major League Baseball’s career leader with a .372 batting average, surpassing Ty Cobb’s .367, when Negro Leagues records for more than 2,300 players were incorporated Tuesday after a three-year research project.

Gibson’s .466 average for the 1943 Homestead Grays became the season standard, followed by Charlie “Chino” Smith’s .451 for the 1929 New York Lincoln Giants. They overtook the .440 by Hugh Duffy for the National League’s Boston team in 1894.

Gibson also became the career leader in slugging percentage (.718) and OPS (1.177), moving ahead of Babe Ruth (.690 and 1.164).

“It’s a show of respect for great players who performed in the Negro Leagues due to circumstances beyond their control and once those circumstances changed demonstrated that they were truly major leaguers,” baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred said Wednesday in an interview with The Associated Press. “Maybe the single biggest factor was the success of players who played in the Negro Leagues and then came to the big leagues.”

A special committee on baseball records decided in 1969 to recognize six major leagues dating to 1876: the National (which launched in 1876), the American (1901), the American Association (1882-1891), Union Association (1884), Players’ League (1890) and Federal League (1914-1915). It excluded the National Association (1871-75), citing an “erratic schedule and procedures.”

MLB announced in December 2020 that it would be “correcting a longtime oversight” and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/sports-mlb-baseball-jackie-robinson-62c672efd3b47e98f3bcfc6e81b7882b">would add the Negro Leagues</a>. John Thorn, MLB’s official historian, chaired a 17-person committee that included Negro Leagues experts and statisticians.

“The condensed 60-game season for the 2020 calendar year for the National League and American League prompted us to think that maybe the shortened Negro League seasons could come under the MLB umbrella, after all,” Thorn said.

An updated version of MLB’s database will become public before the St. Louis Cardinals and San Francisco Giants play a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/mlb-rickwood-mays-negro-leagues-tribute-1e173a7713d5bd63be58da7660c0d0e4">tribute game to the Negro Leagues on June 20</a>&nbsp;at Rickwood Field in Birmingham, Alabama.

Baseball Hall of Fame President Josh Rawitch said statistics on Cooperstown plaques will remain the same because they reflect the information available at the time of a player’s induction.

Standards for season leaders is the same for Negro Leagues as the other leagues: 3.1 plate appearances or one inning for each game played by a player’s team.

Gibson’s .974 slugging percentage in 1937 becomes the season record, and Barry Bonds’ .863 in 2001 dropped to fifth, also trailing Mules Suttles’ .877 in 1926, Gibson’s .871 in 1943 and Smith’s .870 in 1929.

Bond’s prior OPS record of 1.421 in 2004 dropped to third behind Gibson’s 1.474 in 1937 and 1.435 in 1943.

Willie Mays gained 10 hits from the 1948 Birmingham Black Barons, increasing his total to 3,293. Minnie Minoso surpassed 2,000 hits, credited with 150 for the New York Cubans from 1946-1948 that boosted his total to 2,113.

Jackie Robinson, who broke MLB’s color barrier with the 1947 Dodgers, was credited with 49 hits with the 1945 Kansas City Monarchs that increased his total to 1,567.

Among pitchers, Satchel Paige gained 28 wins that raised his total to 125.

The committee met six times and dealt with issues such as when compiled league statistics didn’t make sense, such as a league having more wins than losses and walks that were missing. Researchers had to identify whether players with the same name were one person or separate, tracking dates of birth, and identify people listed by nicknames. Documenting transactions and identifying ballparks in a time when neutral sites often were used is ongoing, along with uncovering statistics for independent teams.

“We made the decision at a point in time that we became convinced that it was possible to get accurate statistics that could be appropriately integrated into our record books,” Manfred said.

Kevin Johnson and Gary Ashwill, researchers who had spent nearly two decades helping assemble the Seamheads Negro Leagues Database, were included in the project.

Thorn estimated 72% of Negro Leagues records from 1920-1948 are included and additional research might lead to future modifications. Thorn said a four-homer game by Gibson in 1938 and a home run by Mays in August 1948 could not be included because complete game accounts have not been found.

“Without a box score, we can’t really balance the statistics,” Johnson said. “Those games are kind of in limbo at the moment.”

Records include the first Negro National League (1920-31), Eastern Colored League (1923-28), American Negro League (1929), East-West League (1932), Negro Southern League (1932), second Negro National League (1933-48) and Negro American League (1937-48).

Some game details were obtained from newspapers that covered the Black communities. Johnson said while complete accounts were found for about 95% of games in the 1920s, coverage dropped off during the Great Depression in the 1930s and never fully recovered.

CINCINNATI (AP) — Nolan Arenado hit a two-run homer, Kyle Gibson pitched six sparkling innings and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Cincinnati Reds 7-1. Iván Herrera had three hits for St. Louis, which improved to 11-3 in its last 14 games. Gibson was charged with one run and two hits. The right-hander struck out six and walked two. CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Stewart-Haas Racing will close its NASCAR teams at the end of the 2024 season. The announcement comes after nearly a year of rumors that the four-car Cup Series team was looking to sell its charters and either scale back or exit the series completely. Gene Haas founded the team in 2002 and landed Stewart as a co-owner ahead of the 2009 season. Stewart in his debut season gave the team its first Cup Series victory and its first Cup title in 2011. MINNEAPOLIS (AP) —&nbsp;Simeon Woods Richardson earned his first win in eight starts, Jose Miranda drove in two runs and the Minnesota Twins beat the Kansas City Royals 4-2 on Tuesday night.

Minnesota, winners of six of their last seven games, got two hits apiece from Manuel Margot, Byron Buxton and Carlos Santana.

Jhoan Duran allowed the first two hitters he faced in the ninth to reach base, but helped by Christian Vázquez throwing out a runner trying to steal second, he didn’t allow a run and earned his eighth save. His last two pitches were 102.2 and 103.1 mph.

“In that situation, I got more angry because I don’t want to allow that run to come in. So I got two outs, and I need to put that guy out,” he said.

Kansas City had just five hits to lose its third straight after winning eight in a row. The Royals have dropped 15 of their last 16 at Target Field.

“It was an all-around team win today. It was very quality,” said Woods Richardson (2-0), who allowed three hits and struck out four in five innings for his first win since April 13.

He allowed two or fewer earned runs in seven of his past eight starts, and only once did he receive more than two runs of support. His 2.70 ERA is third among rookies with at least 35 innings pitched, trailing Shota Imanaga of the Cubs (0.84) and Luis Gil of the Yankees (2.11).

“The maturity, the strike throwing, and truly just being able to do different things with different pitches," manager Rocco Baldelli said. "He uses mainly three of those pitches really well, with touch and feel and the stuff is actually good. It’s actually improving. It’s not easy to do, but he’s giving us winning starts.”

After cruising through four innings, Woods Richardson found trouble in the fifth. Nick Loftin walked, advanced to third on Hunter Renfroe’s double, and scored on Garrett Hampson’s single. Kyle Isbel’s groundout plated Renfroe to make it 3-2.

Bobby Witt Jr. flew out to end the threat.

“Runner on third you kind of have to limit the damage, but not give in, so just trying to do that,” said Woods Richardson.

Cole Ragans (4-4), who took a no-hit bid into the sixth inning last Wednesday, struggled early for Kansas City but got through five innings. He allowed nine hits and struck out seven.

The left-hander gave up hits to Minnesota’s first two batters: Margot singled and Carlos Correa doubled. Both scored on Miranda’s single to end Ragans’ 13-inning scoreless streak.

“At the beginning I just wasn’t getting ahead, falling behind, bad counts. They made me pay for it,” Ragans said. “… Overall I left some pitches over the plate and they did damage.”

Back-to-back doubles by Vázquez and Margot made it 3-0 in the fourth.

Royals: 1B Vinnie Pasquantino left the game in the third inning with a lower left leg contusion after fully extending to catch a high throw from 3B Maikel Garcia. He is considered day to day.

Twins: To make room on the 40-man roster for RHP Diego Castillo, whose contract was selected from Triple-A St. Paul, RHP Justin Toba was transferred to the 60-day injured list. He’s been out since March 25 with left patellar tendinitis.

RHP Seth Lugo (8-1, 1.74), who leads the American League in wins and all of baseball in ERA among qualified players, is scheduled to start Wednesday for Kansas City. He’s scheduled to face RHP Bailey Ober (5-2, 4.33).

⚾️ Woods Richardson gets first win in 8 starts as Twins top Royals 

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Community College freshman guard Kiki Smith says she will transfer to the University of Arkansas. The 5-foot-7 freshman from Topeka was a big key to the Blue Dragons claiming their first-ever title in women's basketball history.

Smith was named the NJCAA Division I women's basketball National Player of the Year, as well as a First-Team All-American selection. She was also a First-Team all-conference selection and the Jayhawk Conference Player of the Year, plus the conferences' Freshman of the Year award winner.

She averaged nearly 18 points per game, while shooting over 50 percent from the floor.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Community College athletic department has announced dates and kickoff times for the 2024 Blue Dragon football season.

The Blue Dragons will open the season against New Mexico Military Institute on Thursday, August, 29, at Gowans Stadium with a 6 p.m. kickoff.

HutchCC will play four of its first five games at home, including games against Iowa Central, Ellsworth (IA) and Dodge City. The lone road game during that stretch is at Iowa Western on Saturday, September 7 in Council Bluffs.

The Blue Dragons will have just one evening game, which will be the season opener, all of the other games will kickoff at 11&nbsp; a.m., 12 p.m., or 1 p.m.

The Blue Dragons will be carried on the flagship station for HutchCC athletics, KHUT-FM (102.9), as well as sister station KWBW-AM/FM (1450) with Countdown to Kickoff beginning 30 minutes prior to each game.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Joe Ryan pitched seven smooth innings for the Minnesota Twins, who got a two-run homer by Jose Miranda and a three-run shot from Trevor Larnach and hung on to beat the Kansas City Royals 6-5 in the opener of a four-game series. Ryan allowed one run and four singles while lowering his team-leading ERA to 2.96. The right-hander struck out nine and walked none. Jhoan Duran got the final out of a four-run ninth by getting Royals star Bobby Witt Jr. to bounce back to the mound. The Twins are 5-1 after a seven-game losing streak.

CINCINNATI (AP) — Nick Lodolo came off the injured list to pitch 5 1/3 innings of one-run ball, Jeimer Candelario homered and the Cincinnati Reds won a season-high fourth straight game, 3-1 over the St. Louis Cardinals. Lodolo, who missed his last two starts while nursing a groin injury, allowed a first-inning home run to Paul Goldschmidt but otherwise stayed out of trouble against the hot-hitting Cardinals. The 26-year-old lefty allowed five hits, struck out three and did not issue a walk.

Acuña was hurt during the Braves’ 8-1 win at Pittsburgh on Sunday. The Braves announced Sunday night an MRI showed a complete ACL tear that will require surgery. Acuña tore his right ACL in July 2021. Acuña was voted the NL MVP last season after hitting .337 with 41 homers, 106 RBIs and 73 stolen bases.MILWAUKEE (AP) — Craig Counsell’s first game at American Family Field since the Chicago Cubs hired him away from Milwaukee included a warm scoreboard message and a couple hearty rounds of boos. A brief pregame video showcased some highlights from Counsell’s tenure as Milwaukee’s manager before displaying him wearing a Brewers cap alongside the message, “Thank You No. 30.” Brewers fans booed throughout the video, and then booed again when he was introduced as the Cubs’ manager.OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Southeastern Conference regular-season and tournament champion Tennessee is the No. 1 national seed for the NCAA baseball tournament. The 64-team event opens with 16 regionals Friday. Winners advance to eight best-of-three super regionals. Those winners move to the College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska, beginning June 14. The Volunteers haven’t lost consecutive games since mid-March and are the only team in the country to win 50 games three of the past four years. They will try to become the first No. 1 national seed to win the title since Miami in 1999, the year the NCAA went to the current tournament structure.UNDATED (AP) — Bill Walton, who starred for John Wooden’s UCLA Bruins before becoming a Hall of Fame center for his NBA career and one of the biggest stars of basketball broadcasting, has died. The league announced that Walton died Monday after a prolonged fight with cancer. He was 71. Walton was the NBA’s MVP in the 1977-78 season, a two-time champion and a member of both the NBA’s 50th anniversary and 75th anniversary teams. That followed a college career in which he was a two-time champion at UCLA and a three-time national player of the year.INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Derrick White’s tiebreaking 3-pointer with 43 seconds left gave Boston the lead and the Celtics closed out a four-game sweep of the Indiana Pacers 105-102 to reach the NBA Finals for the second time in three years. White finished with 16 points and only two 3s in the game. Jaylen Brown led Boston with 29 points while Jayson Tatum added 26 points. Andrew Nembhard had 24 points, 10 assists and six rebounds but missed a potentially tying 3-pointer in the closing seconds and the Pacers never go the ball again.DALLAS (AP) — Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving have been the closers for the Dallas Mavericks, who have a chance to sweep Minnesota in the Western Conference finals. The Dallas co-stars are coming off another big fourth quarter in a victory that gave the Mavs a 3-0 series lead. Game 4 is Tuesday night in Dallas. Instead, he got to run only the single, leaving the NASCAR star beyond disappointed. Larson’s goal to run the Indianapolis 500 and Coca-Cola 600 on Sunday and join Tony Stewart as only drivers to complete all 1,100 laps did not go nearly as planned. He finished 18th at Indianapolis after a pair of rookie mistakes.
