KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes landed awkwardly on his left ankle while throwing a tying touchdown pass against Tampa Bay on Monday night, and just about everyone in Arrowhead Stadium seemed to hold their breath as he lay on the ground.

They didn't feel a whole lot better when trainers began to help him to the Kansas City sideline.

But after the two-time MVP was checked out, and the Chiefs' medical staff declared him fit to continue, Mahomes was right back on the field. And after leading the Chiefs to a go-ahead touchdown in regulation, which the Buccaneers matched in the final minute to force overtime, Mahomes led Kansas City on the decisive touchdown march to escape with&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/buccaneers-chiefs-score-5efb3014555b148e2a07af73a057102a">the 30-24 victory</a>.

“Pat's a tough guy,” said Chiefs receiver DeAndre Hopkins, who had two TD catches. “Obviously he's the leader of this offense, the leader of this team. When he went down, everybody was around him, seeing if he was all right.”

Mahomes admitted he will be sore Tuesday, and the recovery will need to be swift with the Chiefs playing again Sunday, when the Broncos come to town. But it appeared that he escaped a serious injury like the one he had during the 2022 playoffs.

“I think the playoffs one a couple of years ago was how I got tackled. It got stuck and it hurt a lot more,” he said. “Obviously I'll get a little swelling, a short week, but go in there and take care of it and be ready to play next week.”

Kansas City was trailing 17-10 and facing third-and-goal at the Buccaneers 6 when Mahomes rolled to his right. As a defender rushed toward him, Mahomes planted his left foot awkwardly while flipping a pass to Samaje Perine alone in the end zone.

Mahomes, who has a history of ankle injuries, lay face down in the grass before rolling over and grabbing at the ankle. Trainers came all the way across the field to talk to him on the Tampa Bay sideline, and they helped him halfway across the field before Mahomes shook them off and walked the rest of the way on his own.

“I wasn't sure exactly where he was going to be with it,” said Chiefs coach Andy Reid, who had instructed backup Carson Wentz to begin warming up. “He might have the loosest ankles in America. It's ridiculous how he can come back from those things.”

Mahomes finished with 291 yards passing and three touchdowns and did not throw a pick for the first time this season, helping Kansas City become only the sixth reigning Super Bowl champion to start 8-0 the following season.

Earlier in the game, Chiefs wide receiver Mecole Hardman looked as if he also sustained a serious injury when he landed hard on his shoulder after a long punt return. But he was back to return a punt late in the second quarter and caught an important pass to convert a third down as the Chiefs were trying to tie the game 17-all early in the fourth.

Hardman's return was good news for a team already missing Marquise Brown, who hurt his shoulder in the preseason and could miss the year following surgery, and fellow receiver Rashee Rice, who underwent season-ending surgery on his knee.

JuJu Smith-Schuster has been dealing with a hamstring injury and also was inactive.

Those injuries were a big reason why the Chiefs recently traded a conditional fifth-round draft pick to the Titans for Hopkins, a three-time All-Pro who made his debut for Kansas City in last week's win over the Raiders.

Hopkins had a memorable first home game at Arrowhead Stadium.

He made a spectacular contested catch on third-and-8 inside the Tampa Bay 5 late in the second quarter, then caught a 1-yard TD pass from Mahomes and celebrated with the dance made famous by the movie “Remember the Titans.” He added the go-ahead touchdown catch with 4:17 left in the game and finished with eight catches for 86 yards on the night.

“He's so good at winning 1-on-1,” Mahomes said, “so to be able to have him down in the red zone, third-down situations — he does a good job of filling out and finding those windows. You give him a chance down the field and he makes a play.”

Coach Mike McCarthy says Prescott is out for Sunday's game against Philadelphia after getting hurt at Atlanta. Multiple reports citing anonymous sources say Prescott is expected to miss multiple games. Any lengthy absence from Prescott would be another setback in a season full of them for the Cowboys. They are on their first three-game losing streak since 2020. Dallas played the last 11 games of that 6-10 season without Prescott after he broke an ankle. Cooper Rush replaced Prescott in the 27-21 loss to the Falcons.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — The New Orleans Saints have fired coach Dennis Allen a day after a loss at last-place Carolina extended the Saints' losing streak to seven games. It's the franchise's longest skid since 1999. Allen is 18-25 without a playoff appearance since taking over in 2022 after Sean Payton began what turned out to be a one-season retirement from coaching. The 52-year-old Allen is 26-53 in his NFL coaching career, including an 8-28 mark with the Oakland Raiders from 2012 to 2014. The Saints named special teams coordinator Darren Rizzi the interim coach with eight games left in what likely will be the club's fourth straight season without a playoff berth.

Darius Garland scores 39, Cavs improve to 8-0 with 116-114 win over struggling Bucks without Giannis

Lakers star Anthony Davis hurts left ankle in loss to Pistons, another blow for oft-injured center

DETROIT (AP) — Lakers star Anthony Davis injured his left ankle late in Los Angeles' 115-103 loss to the Detroit Pistons on Monday night. Davis went up for a layup and after being fouled by Pistons center Jalen Duren, he tumbled down to the court and grabbed his left ankle. Davis stayed in the game and continued to score, finishing with 37 points a game after he had a season-high 38 points in a win at Toronto. The 31-year-old Davis is scoring a league-high 32.6 points, coming off an outstanding season in which the oft-injured center played in a career-high 76 games.

Flagg thrives with all-around game for No. 7 Duke in college debut against his home-state program

DURHAM, N.C. (AP) — Duke freshman Cooper Flagg turned in an all-around floor game against his home-state team in the seventh-ranked Blue Devils' season opener. The nation's No. 1 recruit and preseason Associated Press All-American finished with 18 points, seven rebounds and five assists in a 96-62 win against Maine. Flagg said he had some extra emotion of facing Maine since he had grown up going to games there. His mother also played basketball for Maine. Duke coach Jon Scheyer said Flagg "makes everybody better" with his overall game even when he's not shooting the ball particularly well.

Hunter Dickinson returns for No. 1 Kansas in season opener

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Hunter Dickinson was back on the court for No. 1 Kansas. His next game is going to be a more difficult challenge. Dickinson missed two exhibition games because of a minor injury. But the 7-foot-2 center returned to the Jayhawks' lineup for their opener, scoring 16 points in an 87-57 victory over Howard. Next up is a matchup with No. 9 North Carolina on Friday night at Allen Fieldhouse. Dickinson went 5 for 8 from the field in 21 minutes against Howard. Coming off its second bye week of the season, the Hutchinson Community College football team remained No. 3 in the latest NJCAA Division I Football Rankings, which were released on Monday.

The 7-1 Blue Dragons play host to the Highland Scotties at Noon on Saturday at Gowans Stadium. The Dragons will close the regular season with Highland and travel to Garden City on November 16.

This is the 44th consecutive poll the Dragons have been ranked, which is the second-longest run in the rankings in program history. The Blue Dragon record for consecutive weeks ranked in the polls is 45, which was set from 2010 to 2013. The Dragons have been ranked the nation's Top 3 for 40 consecutive polls.

The Dragons will close the regular season with Highland and travel to Garden City on November 16.This is the 44th consecutive poll the Dragons have been ranked, which is the second-longest run in the rankings in program history. The Blue Dragon record for consecutive weeks ranked in the polls is 45, which was set from 2010 to 2013. The first half was a back-and-forth affair the first 10 minutes until Western Kentucky seized control with 8:59 to go in the half. The Hilltoppers grabbed a 25-17 lead, but Wichita State cut it back to one at the 5:35 mark. The Hilltoppers made it 38-35 with 2:37 to go, but the visiting closed the half on an 8-0 run behind three-pointers from Bell and&nbsp;<dfn style="text-align: start;color: rgb(0, 0, 0);font-size: 16px;font-family: Roboto, sans-serif;"><a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/aj-mcginnis/9064" rel="smarttag" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0);">AJ McGinnis</a></dfn>&nbsp;to take a 43-38 lead into the locker room. Finally with 10:30 remaining, Wichita State got some breathing room behind a 6-0 spurt. A pair of Ballard free throws pushed it to 10 with 7:46 remaining. One final push from the home team saw WKU make it a three-point game, 85-82, and less than a minute to play, drawing comparisons to last year&apos;s team. But that wouldn&apos;t be the case tonight. Wichita State closed it out at the free throw line to leave Bowling Green 1-0. LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Zeke Mayo, a grad transfer from South Dakota State, had 19 points in his Kansas debut and the top-ranked Jayhawks beat Howard 87-57 on Monday night in the season-opener for both teams.

Kansas led 46-19 at halftime and its biggest lead was 38 points.

The game was the second annual McClendon Classic, named in honor of Kansas graduate and Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame honoree John McClendon.

Kansas (1-0) used the game as a tune-up before a top-10 showdown with North Carolina on Friday night. The Jayhawks had 10 players score, with three in double-figures. Hunter Dickinson, who missed Kansas' scrimmage and exhibition games, had 16 points and six rebounds, and Flory Bidunga added 13 points and a game-high eight rebounds.

Blake Harper had 16 points to lead Howard.

Howard: The Bison will take away plenty from the contest, mostly measured in guaranteed money they received from Kansas.

Kansas: The Jayhawks won their 52nd consecutive home opener, dating back to the final 10 years of Ted Owens’ career, through five years under Larry Brown, 15 under Roy Williams and 22 straight under Bill Self.

COLBY, Kan. – Posting a 15-1 mark in Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference matches this season, Barton Community College has won their second-straight KJCCC Division 1 volleyball regular season title and top overall seed in the upcoming NJCAA Division 1 Volleyball Plains District Tournament.

The Cougars earn their 22nd KJCCC title in program history after going 28-2 in the regular season as their only conference loss came at the hands of regular season runner-up Colby Community College on October 16th. Barton ended the regular season on a five-match winning streak and won 46 of 52 sets that they played in conference action as BCC will look for their 24th NJCAA Volleyball national tournament appearance and first since 2020.

Colby earns the number two seed in the upcoming NJCAA Division 1 Volleyball Plains District Tournament after going 24-3 overall in the regular season and 14-2 in the conference play after making the NJCAA Division 1 Volleyball national tournament for the third time in program history last year after winning the Plains District Title as the number three seed. Colby’s only conference losses were to Barton and Garden City as 13 of their 14 conference wins came by sweep.

Other teams to earn hosting rights in the opening round of the Plains District Tournament include three-seed Dodge City (20-13 overall, 11-5 KJCCC record) and four-seed Butler (18-14 overall, 10-6 KJCCC record) as both will look to make a second-straight trip to the Plains District Tournament semifinals. Dodge City upset third-seeded Hutchinson last year to make the semifinal round for a second-straight year before falling to district champion Colby while the Grizzlies knocked off regular season champion Barton last season to make the Plains District Title game before falling to the Trojans.

Other teams to qualify for the Plains District Tournament include fifth-seeded Garden City, sixth-seeded Hutchinson, seventh-seeded Seward County, and eighth-seeded Pratt as all four will be on the road for the opening round of the tournament on Wednesday, November 6th.

The 2024 NJCAA Division 1 Volleyball Plains District Tournament will get underway with four matches on Wednesday as top-seed Barton will host Pratt at 6 PM, two-seed Colby will host Seward County at 6:30 PM, three-seed Dodge City will host Hutchinson at 6 PM and four-seed Butler will host Garden City at 6 PM.

Winners of the four opening-round matches will meet at the highest remaining seed over the weekend for the semifinal and finals with the winner of the Barton/Pratt match playing the winner of the Butler/Garden City match in the first semifinal at 4 PM while the second semifinal will feature the winner of Colby/Seward County against the winner of Dodge City/Hutchinson and will take place 60 minutes after the conclusion of the first semifinal match. The 2024 Plains District Championship match will take place the following day and is scheduled for 2 PM.

🏐 HutchCC opens Plains District Tournament at Dodge City

KANSAS CITY, Mo.—Kansas City Royals catcher&nbsp;Salvador Perez&nbsp;and shortstop&nbsp;Bobby Witt Jr.&nbsp;have been named finalists for the 2024 Louisville Slugger Silver Slugger Award, as announced this morning by Louisville Slugger. Finalists are voted on by Major League Managers and coaches. Winners will be announced on MLB Network on Tuesday, Nov. 12 at 6:00 p.m. CT.

Perez is one of four finalists among American League catchers, joining Houston’s&nbsp;Yainer Diaz, Oakland’s&nbsp;Shea Langeliers&nbsp;and Seattle’s&nbsp;Cal Raleigh. Witt Jr. is one of three finalists among American League shortstops, along with Baltimore’s&nbsp;Gunnar Henderson&nbsp;and Texas’&nbsp;Corey Seager.

Among qualified American League catchers in 2024 (min. 50% games at the position), Perez ranked 1st in RBI (104), on-base percentage (.330), slugging percentage (.456), OPS (.786) and extra-base hits (55), 2nd in batting average (.271) and hits (160) and 3rd in home runs (27).

Perez, 34, is by far the oldest among the American League finalists at his position, ahead of Raleigh (27), Langeliers (26) and Diaz (26). Salvy’s 104 RBI were the 2nd most ever by a catcher (min. 50% games) in his age-34 season or older, trailing only&nbsp;Carlton Fisk, who had 107 RBI at age 37 in 1985.

Salvy played in 158 games in 2024, the 2nd-highest total of his 13-year career, and made 90 starts behind the plate. His 27 home runs tied for the 2nd-highest total of his career and marked his eighth season with at least 20 HR. Perez ranked 2nd among all Major League players with 29 go-ahead RBI, trailing only&nbsp;Aaron Judge&nbsp;(32).

Perez has been a finalist in 10 of the last 11 seasons since 2014, with the only exception being 2019, when he missed the entire season due to injury.

Should Perez win the award (which was established in 1980), it would be his fifth career honor, following 2016, 2018, 2020 and 2021. His four career Silver Slugger Awards are already a club record, ahead of&nbsp;George Brett’s&nbsp;three. Witt Jr. hit 32 home runs (2nd among AL shortstops) to become the first shortstop in Major League history to record consecutive 30/30 seasons. He also became the second player ever (regardless of position) to lead the Majors in batting average during a 30/30 season, joining&nbsp;Mookie Betts&nbsp;in 2018.

Witt Jr., who was a finalist in 2023, would be the first Royals shortstop to win a Silver Slugger Award.

Witt Jr. was named a&nbsp;Rawlings&nbsp;Gold Glove Award winner for the first time last night. If he wins the Louisville Slugger Silver Slugger Award, Witt Jr. would be the 13th different shortstop (18th occurrence) to win both honors in the same season, and the first since&nbsp;Brandon Crawford&nbsp;in 2015.

Ten Royals players have combined for 16 Louisville Slugger Silver Slugger Awards, and the most recent winner was Perez in 2021. Only twice before have the Royals had multiple winners in the same season, in 1980 (Brett and&nbsp;Willie Wilson) and 1982 (Wilson and&nbsp;Hal McRae).

SEATTLE (AP) — Demarcus Robinson made a one-handed, 39-yard touchdown reception in overtime, and the Los Angeles Rams stunned the Seattle Seahawks 26-20. With the Rams needing only a field goal, Matthew Stafford went for the win by throwing a deep ball to Robinson, who was well covered by cornerback Riq Woolen. With his one free hand, Robinson grabbed the ball in the end zone and secured it as he fell to the turf. Stafford threw for 298 yards and two touchdowns to Robinson. The Rams have won three straight after losing four of their previous five. The Seahawks have lost four straight at home and five of six overall.

Cowboys QB Dak Prescott will have an MRI to determine severity of hamstring injury

ATLANTA (AP) — Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott will have an MRI on Monday to determine the severity of a hamstring injury that forced him to leave Sunday's loss at Atlanta. Prescott says he "felt a pull" that was unlike anything he's felt before. But he but added "it'll take a lot" for him not to play when Cowboys host NFC East rival Philadelphia next Sunday. Prescott also says "it's a tough deal to walk on" the injured leg. Prescott also appeared to suffer an injury to his right hand at the end of the third quarter. The Cowboys lost their third straight to fall to 3-5.

Darnold throws 3 TD passes in 2nd half as Vikings overcome 3 turnovers to beat Flacco, Colts 21-13

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Sam Darnold overcame four sacks and three turnovers by throwing three second-half touchdown passes, and the Minnesota defense made Indianapolis quarterback Joe Flacco's return to the starting role a rough one as the Vikings beat the Colts 21-13. Justin Jefferson had 137 receiving yards as the Vikings stopped a two-game skid and improved to 6-2. Darnold threw for 290 yards. Kenny Moore II's 38-yard fumble return in the second quarter was the only touchdown for the Colts, who fell to 4-5. Flacco threw for 179 yards and an interception while replacing the inconsistent Anthony Richardson.

Eagles RB Saquon Barkley amazes with backward hurdle for first-down reception

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Saquon Barkley hurdled a Jaguars defender backward as part of an acrobatic 14-yard reception that gave the Eagles a first down. Barkley took a short pass from Jalen Hurts and faked out one defender and used a spin move that left another Jaguars defender flailing on the ground before he pulled off a split-leg, backward leap over Jacksonville cornerback Jarrian Jones for the 14-yard gain. Barkley also had a 20-yard touchdown catch in the first half of the Eagles' 28-23 victory over the Jaguars.

Saints WR Chris Olave discharged from hospital after concussion, to return to New Orleans with team

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Saints wide receiver Chris Olave has been discharged from Carolinas Medical Center and set to return to New Orleans on Sunday with his teammates following a 23-22 loss to the Carolina Panthers. Olave sustained a concussion in the first quarter following a hit from safety Xavier Woods and was placed on a backboard and taken to the hospital. The Saints said Olave has use of all of his extremities. Olave was coming across the middle on a pass route when he was sandwiched by Woods and cornerback Dane Jackson. Woods appeared to lead with his shoulder, but collided with Olave's head as he was attempting to catch the ball on the run. Immediately four flags came flying and Woods was penalized for unnecessary roughness.

Bass' 61-yard field goal gives Allen and Bills a thrilling 30-27 win over Tagovailoa and Dolphins

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) — Tyler Bass kicked a career-best 61-yard field goal with 5 seconds left, Josh Allen threw three second-half touchdown passes in a back-and-forth duel with Miami's Tua Tagovailoa, and the Buffalo Bills continued their domination of the Dolphins with a 30-27 victory. The teams traded leads four times in a thrilling second half that included seven consecutive scoring drives — four by AFC East-leading Buffalo and three by division rival Miami. Buffalo's final drive stalled at the Miami 43 following a spike and two incompletions, and coach Sean McDermott put his faith in the inconsistent Bass. He came through with the longest field goal in franchise history.

Raiders fire offensive coordinator Luke Getsy and 2 other offensive coaches

HENDERSON, Nev. (AP) — The slumping Las Vegas Raiders have fired offensive coordinator Luke Getsy as part of an offensive coaching staff shakeup. This comes less than a year after Las Vegas hired him. The club also announced Sunday it let go quarterbacks coach Rich Scangarello and offensive line coach James Cregg. Both also were on the job less than a year. The moves come on the same day the Raiders lost 41-24 at Cincinnati. It was their fifth defeat in a row to fall to 2-7.

AP Top 25: Oregon a unanimous No. 1 ahead of 1st CFP rankings, followed by Georgia, Ohio State

Oregon is a unanimous choice for No. 1 in The Associated Press college football poll. The Ducks hope to also be in the top spot in the College Football Playoff selection committee's first rankings of the season on Tuesday. The Ducks are No. 1 in the AP Top 25 for the third straight week and unanimous for the first time. Georgia remained No. 2. Ohio State earned a one-spot promotion to No. 3 with its win at Penn State. Miami and Texas round out the top five. Penn State slipped to No. 6.

Blaney gets shot at back-to-back NASCAR titles after controversial finish at Martinsville Speedway

Ryan Blaney earned a chance to defend his NASCAR championship with a victory Sunday at Martinsville Speedway that pushed the Team Penske driver into the winner-take-all season finale. The ending of the race was marred by a lengthy NASCAR review in which scoring officials had to determine if Christopher Bell had violated a safety rule in his last-lap pass of William Byron. Bell hit the wall and rode a portion of it for momentum — the same thing Ross Chastain did two years ago in a move that has since been banned. Bell's pass of Byron left them tied in points for the final spot in next week's title-decider at Phoenix Raceway. Bell's move was deemed illegal and Byron was given the final spot.

Matt Chapman wins 5th Gold Glove, Witt among 14 first-time winners

ST. LOUIS (AP) — San Francisco third baseman Matt Chapman won his fifth Gold Glove and Kansas City shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. was among 14 first-time winners of baseball's most famous fielding honor. Cleveland second baseman Andrés Giménez and left fielder Steven Kwan won for the third consecutive year along with Arizona first baseman Christian Walker and Chicago Cubs left fielder Ian Happ. Rockies center fielder Brenton Doyle won for the second straight season. Six teams had two Gold Gloves winners each, with the Guardians joined by Colorado, Kansas City, Milwaukee, San Francisco and Seattle.

Haley Rogers joined an exclusive Blue Dragon club on Sunday becoming only the second Hutchinson Community College women’s soccer player in the 20-year history of the program to score an overtime goal in the postseason.

Rogers’ Golden Goal came with 1 minute, 56 seconds into the second overtime as the No. 14-ranked and third-seeded Blue Dragons defeated sixth-seeded Dodge City 1-0 in the opening-round of the 2024 Region VI/Plains District Tournament at Don Michael Field.

The Blue Dragons (10-2-6) advance to the Region 6 Tournament semifinals for the for the 15th time in 20 seasons and will play at No. 2 seed Butler on Thursday at BG Products Veterans Memorial Stadium in El Dorado. The game time will be announced on Monday.

Locked in a scoreless struggle through 100 minutes, the Blue Dragon defense created the opportunity for Rogers’ game winner.

Sophomore Lorena Gomes intercepted a Dodge City pass just inside the Conquistadors’ offensive zone. Gomes immediately worked the ball forward to sophomore Kaitlyn Edwards, who then lobbed a pass intended for Rogers. That pass glanced off a defensive header attempt of a Dodge City player and fell right to the feet of a sprinting Rogers about 28 yards from the goal. Rogers drove in to about 10 yards, drew Dodge City goalkeeper Ana Ramirez-Cortes out and scored the game-winning goal with 8:04 left in the second overtime.

The Blue Dragons are 2-0 all-time in Region 6 Tournament overtime games. They are 2-2 in all postseason games in program history.

Rogers joins Blue Dragon Hall of Famer Alicia Robinson as the only players in Hutchinson women’s soccer history to score a postseason Golden Goal. Robinson scored the game winner in overtime on a corner kick she bent into the goal in the 2010 Region 6 Tournament Championship game on October 31, 2010 in Topeka.

Credited with the game-winning assist, Edwards becomes the first Blue Dragon ever to have a postseason game-winning assist.

Other than the game winner, offensive opportunities were few for the Dragons.

Right before the end of the first half, Kira Artmann put Hutchinson’s first shot on goal that was deflected by Ramirez-Cortez, but went out of bounds for a corner kick. With the final seconds ticking away, Rogers got the corner off, but Ramirez-Cortez snagged out of the air surrounded by Blue Dragons with 1 seconds left in a scoreless first half.

Dodge City out-shot the Blue Dragons 13-10 and the teams were tied in shots on goal with six each.

Blue Dragon sophomore goalkeeper Karsyn Slothower (5-2-5) had six saves in her fourth shutout and fifth victory of the season. She made two strong saves in the first 5:15 of the game. Her other four saves were routine saves.

Slothower’s 11th career shutout tied Michelle McElroy (2008-09) and Jennifer Currie (2014-15) for the fourth-most career shutouts by a Blue Dragon keeper. Her 17th career victory ties Ashley Perez (2005-06) and Carly McArthur (2006-07) for fifth on the Hutchinson career list.The Blue Dragons run their current unbeaten streak to nine games (6-0-3). Oregon was the unanimous choice for No. 1 in&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/ap-top-25-college-football-poll">The Associated Press college football poll</a>&nbsp;on Sunday, strengthening its bid for the top spot in the College Football Playoff selection committee’s first rankings of the season.

The Ducks are No. 1 in the AP Top 25 for the third straight week, and unanimous for the first time, following its&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/oregon-michigan-score-top-25-b1f59d7bd138c886ba1f1af098d68645">21-point road win against Michigan.</a>

Georgia, which received one No. 1 vote last week, remained No. 2 after overcoming Carson Beck’s three interceptions and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/florida-georgia-score-d51ff0a9b66ac2b964be86d75e4b26f6">pulling away late to beat Florida.</a>

Ohio State earned a one-spot promotion to No. 3 with its&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/ohio-state-penn-state-top-25-dd2fff8dd7d427ddf0a4d291a7da2e23">win at Penn State</a>, the Buckeyes’ eighth in a row in the series. No. 4 Miami,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/duke-miami-score-7ecfde6392603eb4d2ee87a633c50778">which beat Duke</a>, and No. 5 Texas, which was idle, each moved up a spot. Penn State, which had been in the top five in the previous four polls, slipped to No. 6.

The CFP’s expansion to 12 teams this season means losses by top teams to other top teams aren’t a certain disqualifier in the race for the national championship. The CFP’s first rankings of the season will be released Tuesday and updated weekly until the bracket is announced Dec. 8. 

Tennessee held its place at No. 7 despite scuffling well into the fourth quarter against three-win Kentucky and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/tennessee-kentucky-score-top-25-fe7f1831b668319055cfaf5021506fbd">winning 28-18.</a>

Indiana jumped five spots to No. 8, its highest ranking since it was No. 7 in 2020 — and best in a non-pandemic season since the Hoosiers were No. 4 during their 1967 Rose Bowl season. The&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/indiana-michigan-state-top-25-score-f3fd816a74d57e855b7aa70f70a24032">Hoosiers rolled past Michigan State 47-10</a>&nbsp;on the road to go 9-0 for the first time in program history; every win this season has been by double digits.

No. 9 BYU and No. 10 Notre Dame were idle.

They haven’t been ranked so high since they were No. 3 on Oct. 1, 1985, two years before the NCAA levied the “death penalty” that shut down the program in 1987 for egregious rules violations. The school also chose not to field a team in 1988.

Clemson and Iowa State, tied for No. 11 last week, took the biggest falls after losing at home. The Tigers plummeted eight spots to No. 19 with their&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/clemson-louisville-football-score-top-25-3ea605d46ec8d593cdb2f780d53f8d8d">33-21 loss to Louisville</a>. The Cyclones dropped six spots to No. 17 with their&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/texas-tech-iowa-state-top-25-79eff8f96f9e2aad1ae781c4b5b6808f">23-22 loss to Texas Tech.</a>&nbsp;Texas A&amp;M, Kansas State and Pittsburgh each fell five spots.

Army, at No. 18, has its highest ranking since it was No. 10 at midseason in 1960.

Boise State, at No. 12, has its best ranking since it was No. 8 in the 2011 final poll.

Indiana is ahead of Notre Dame for the first time since the final poll in 1979, when the Hoosiers were No. 19 and the Irish were unranked. The schools are separated by 200 miles in Indiana.

Wacha, 33, completed his 12th season in the Majors in 2024 and first with Kansas City. He made 29 starts and recorded 166.2 innings, the 2nd-highest total of his career and most since 2015 (181.1 IP). His 3.35 ERA (62 ER in 166.2 IP) in 2024 ranked 10th in the American League, helping Kansas City’s starting rotation rank 2nd in the Majors with a 3.55 ERA.

Wacha went 13-8 in 2024 and earned his 100th career win on Sept. 8, becoming one of 20 active pitchers with 100 wins. His .620 career win percentage ranks 6th among active pitchers (min. 150 decisions), trailing Clayton Kershaw (.693), Max Scherzer (.659), Gerrit Cole (.657), Justin Verlander (.641) and Chris Sale (.624).

Wacha was particularly strong over his last 22 starts in 2024, during which he went 12-4 with a 2.72 ERA (39 ER in 129.0 IP). His .750 win percentage from May 9 through season’s end was 2nd best in the American League to Tarik Skubal (.778), and his ERA ranked 3rd in the American League (min. 20 starts) behind Hunter Brown (2.46) and Skubal (2.46).

He allowed 3 earned runs or fewer in 16 consecutive starts from May 9-Aug. 23, matching the single-season franchise record set by Bret Saberhagen during his 1989 Cy Young Award-winning season.

⚾ Wacha signs new deal with Royals

COLBY, Kan. — The Hutchinson Community College volleyball team dropped its final regular-season match of the 2024 season on Saturday at No. 7 Colby.

The Blue Dragons got off to a slow start and lost to the Trojans 25-7, 25-19, 25-19.

Hutchinson closes the regular season with a 19-20 record and finishes sixth in the Jayhawk Conference with a 7-9 record. The Blue Dragons will open the Region 6 Tournament on the road at third-seed Dodge City. The time for that match will be announced later.

Redshirt freshman Tiana Simmons led the Blue Dragons offensively with seven kills. Freshman Atlyn Proctor had five kills, while sophomores McKenzie Murphy and Precious Johnson added five kills and three kills, respectively.

Sophomore setter Shelbi Wilson had 12 assists, while freshman Ellie Suber finished with 10.

Freshman Addy Foster finished with 13 digs. Now with 617 digs for the season, Foster moved past KeAnne Langford (2007) for third place on the Blue Dragon single-season digs list. Wilson added seven digs and Siani Sanchez had six digs.

Four players – Beatriz Carvalho, Wilson, Simmons and Suber – had one ace each. The Blue Dragons had just one block for the match.
