WICHITA, Kan.—The Wichita Wind Surge came out on top 2-1 in the series finale against the Frisco RoughRiders at Riverfront Stadium. The Wind Surge scored both of their runs in the first and kept Frisco at bay, besides a solo homer in the third.

Wichita’s first three batters were all hit by pitches to load the bases;&nbsp;Tanner Schobel&nbsp;hit a sacrifice fly to right field for the first run.&nbsp;Ben Ross&nbsp;later broke his bat, but everyone hurried from station to station to give the Wind Surge a 2-0 advantage after the first inning.

Alejandro Osuna yanked one into the right field seats in the top of the third to cut the lead in half. While both sides would put men on multiple times throughout the rest of the day, neither would score, and&nbsp;Cody Laweryson&nbsp;retired the side in order in the ninth for his third save of the season in the series clincher.

Taylor Floyd&nbsp;earned his first win of the season to stand at 1-2 in 2024 after two scoreless innings of relief with two hits and a strikeout.

PHOENIX (AP) — There is no panic in the U.S. women's Olympic team. The Americans have been in this spot before. The U.S. lost to the WNBA All-Star team on Saturday night and are headed on a flight to London to continue their prep for the Paris Olympics. Breanna Stewart said it felt like deja vu and she wasn't wrong. The 2021 Olympic team also lost to the WNBA All-Star team in a tune-up to the Tokyo Games. They went on to cruise to a seventh consecutive gold medal in Tokyo that year. Just like in the 2021 exhibition game, the Americans had no answer for Arike Ogunbowale.

Ohtani hits 473-foot homer that clears bleachers at Dodger Stadium

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Shohei Ohtani made his 30th home run in Dodger blue a memorable one. The superstar slugger drove a cutter from Boston pitcher Kutter Crawford 473 feet over the bleachers at Dodger Stadium during the fifth inning of Sunday's game against the Red Sox. According to fans in the area, the ball sailed between the pavilion roof and an advertisement sign in right-center field, but it cleared the concourse and landed on the walkway in the ballpark plaza. Ohtani just missed becoming the second Dodgers player and sixth overall to clear the pavilion roof and hit a ball out of Dodger Stadium, which opened in 1962. Los Angeles slugger Mike Piazza did it on Sept. 21, 1997, against the Colorado Rockies.

Beltré, Helton, Mauer and Leyland inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame

COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. (AP) — Adrian Beltré, Joe Mauer, Todd Helton and Jim Leyland have been inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York. Beltré led this year's class with 95.1% of the Baseball Writers' Association of America vote in his first year on the ballot. Helton followed with 79.7% of the vote in his sixth year of eligibility and Mauer received 76.1% of the BBWAA vote in his first year. Leyland was elected by the Contemporary Baseball Era Committee.

Kyle Larson races to his 1st Brickyard 400 victory, making a late charge through the field

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Kyle Larson made a late charge through the field, managed to get his car refired after a red flag and won the final two restart battles Sunday before coasting to his first Brickyard 400 victory under caution. Larson took the lead when Brad Keselowski ran out of fuel and pulled off the track just before the second-to-last restart and beat pole winner Tyler Reddick at the end with the yellow flag out. Larson won in his first trip back to the speedway since trying to become the fifth driver to complete 1,100 miles of racing on the same May day, at Indy and Charlotte, North Carolina. Larson won for the fourth time this season and took the points lead from Hendrick Motorsports teammate Chase Elliott.

Tadej Pogacar celebrates his 3rd Tour de France victory in style with another audacious stage win

Tadej Pogacar had no need to attack on the final stage of the Tour de France. Defending a lead of over five minutes in Sunday's time trial, he was set to comfortably win the race for the third time anyway. But he couldn't resist another attack. With main rival Jonas Vingegaard unable to challenge him, Pogacar celebrated his Tour victory in style with a dominant win in the time trial ending in Nice for the 17th stage win of his illustrious Tour career. The 25-year-old Slovenian rider became the first cyclist to win the Giro d'Italia and Tour de France in the same year since the late Marco Pantani in 1998. Pogacar previously won the Tour in 2020 and 2021.

On Sunday in the only PGA Tour event that uses the modified Stableford scoring system, Dunlap took the lead with a 55-foot eagle putt on the par-5 15th. Players receive eight points for a double eagle, five for eagle and two for birdie. A point is deducted for bogey and three for double bogey. Vince Whaley was second.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Brady Singer threw seven shutout innings to lead the Kansas City Royals to a 6-1 victory over the Chicago White Sox on Saturday night.

“You can’t get much better,” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. “The efficiency, every inning except the one. Location, he seemed to have it on both sides of the plate. He also had some bigger breaking balls and that kept them off balance.”

Singer faced the minimum through three before running into fourth-inning trouble, walking two to load the bases. He escaped with a strikeout and retired 10 of the final 13 hitters.

“Obviously, didn’t want a big inning to happen there, so to get out of those jams and put up a zero was huge,” Singer said. “The biggest thing was getting deep in the game, controlling my pitch count and pitching into the seventh inning.”

Singer (6-6) allowed five singles with two walks and seven strikeouts to earn his second win in his last 10 starts.

“Sinker was great,” he said. “Slider was good. I thought the sweeper was better, my best pitch of the night. I was able to use that a lot more tonight.”

The major league-worst White Sox have dropped six straight and nine of their last 10 games. They have lost 10 consecutive road series since their last win, May 3-5 at St. Louis.

“We had some opportunities to put some runs on the board and we just didn’t,” manager Pedro Grifol said. “(Singer) sinks it. He’s got late, late life on it. When he’s got his fastball going, he’s got his command going, he’s got his slider, he’s pretty tough to hit.”

The Royals built a 3-0 lead in the first inning with five straight hits, highlighted by Michael Massey’s RBI triple. Maikel Garcia and Bobby Witt Jr. doubled in the second, adding another run.

Jonathan Cannon (1-4) held Kansas City to one single thereafter, finishing six innings while allowing four runs on eight hits with four strikeouts.

“He was a little too strong,” Grifol said. “He just needed to take a step back there and settle down and pitch a little bit. Today was a good developmental day for him. In reality, he gave us a chance to win.”

Witt had three hits and has hit safely in 29 of his last 30 home games, batting .444. He has multiple hits in nine of his last 14 games.

Salvador Perez had two hits and an RBI, and Hunter Renfroe drove in two runs in the Royals’ sixth victory in their last eight games.

Hunter Harvey allowed two doubles and an eighth-inning run in his Royals debut.

Kansas City’s 33 wins at Kauffman Stadium are the second-most home wins in baseball behind Philadelphia’s 37 and match the Royals’ home win total from 2023.

Chuckie Robinson made his White Sox debut at catcher, throwing out Witt attempting to steal third.

⚾ Singer shines in Royals win

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Kevin Thomas Jr. claimed the title in the inaugural USAC Silver Crown Salt City 100 on Saturday evening at the Kansas State Fairgrounds.

Thomas Jr. entered the night with five runner-up finishes, but no titles. The Cullman, Alabama native was able to secure the championship in his 22nd career start in the USAC Silver Crown Champ Car Series.

He claimed the pole spot following a 21.090 qualifying session, the fastest lap ever recorded at the fairgrounds.

Thomas Jr. and C.J. Leary had the lead from the starting line and held it for most of the race, as the two longtime friends went back and forth. After Leary had taken the lead over on the 69th lap, the two continued to change leads after a restart with 19 laps to go.

Leary saw his night come to a close early after flipping his No. 6 car on the second turn, causing the race to stop.&nbsp;

Thomas Jr. held the lead for the final 17 laps, crossing the finish line ahead of Logan Seavey.&nbsp;

Liberal native Steven Richardson claimed the IMCA Sprint Car feature title. Dodge City native Justin Lampe won the IMCA Northern Sport Mod feature.&nbsp;

Kevin Thomas Jr. claims inaugural USAC Silver Crown Salt City 100 title

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Monarchs closed out the regular season strong with a come-from-behind 5-3 win on Saturday at Hobart-Detter Field.&nbsp;

Jaden Gustafson came in for Zerick Warren after the Monarchs had allowed Kingman to regain the 3-2 lead in the top of the eighth.

Gustafson drove in Sam Wiese and Jovan Suarez to give the Monarchs a 4-3 lead. Brett Smajstrla added an insurance run scoring Gustafson to score the games final run.

Jace Minor pitched five strong innings before giving way to Brayden McClure, Garrett Fromer, Carson Cornelius and Reed Scott, who each pitched one inning.

Cornelius earned the win, while Scott was credited with the save.

The Monarchs will open play at 6 p.m. on Thursday in the first round of the NBC World Series at Eck Stadium.&nbsp;

⚾ WATCH LIVE: Monarchs host Kingman for final regular season game

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Michael Wacha pitched seven scoreless innings, Bobby Witt Jr. homered and drove in two runs and the Kansas City Royals beat the Chicago White Sox 7-1 on Friday night.

Witt drove Chris Flexen’s inside fastball above the left field bullpen in the first inning for his 17th homer.

“I was just trying to be on time with the heater,” Witt said. “Whenever I’m on time, I feel like good things happen.”

Royals manager Matt Quatraro liked what he saw.

“It was nice to see — a fastball on the inner part of the plate — him turn on it, get us going and get himself going,” he said.

Witt added an RBI in the third on the second of his three hits for a 2-0 lead. Since June 24, he has hit safely in 17 of 19 games, batting .403 with 12 extra-base hits.

Wacha (7-6) induced inning-ending double plays with runners at third in the first and third innings.

“Big-time double plays to get me out of those jams,” Wacha said. “It took a little bit to kind of find a groove. Just getting that command back on those pitches after the (All-Star break) layoff will be key.”

Wacha struck out seven while allowing four hits and a walk, and is 6-2 in his last 10 starts, surrendering no more than three earned runs in each.

“Overall, the results were great,” Wacha said. “I felt like I was able to make pitches when I needed to, get some strikeouts when I needed to.”

It was a tough night for White Sox hitters.

“Wacha’s very difficult to hit, especially when he’s got his changeup going,” White Sox manager Pedro Grifol said.

Michael Massey’s two-out, two-run single highlighted the Royals’ five-run fifth. Kansas City has won five of its last seven.

“Massey’s hit was the difference,” Quatraro said. “But just one good at-bat after another.”

Flexen (2-9) walked four and hit a batter in the fifth. He threw 4 2/3 innings, allowing seven runs on four hits and five walks. In 13 starts since last winning May 8, he is 0-6.

“Obviously fell apart at the end,” Flexen said. “Kind of lost the feel there. The walks are inexcusable.”

Chicago’s Korey Lee homered in the eighth, his ninth.

Brooks Baldwin singled in his first at-bat in his major league debut, as the White Sox lost their fifth straight.

White Sox: Placed RHP Michael Soroka on the 15-day Injured List (retroactive to July 16) with a right shoulder strain.

Royals: Placed OF MJ Melendez on the 10-day Injured List (retroactive to July 15) with a left ankle sprain.

WICHITA, Kan.—The Wichita Wind Surge kept things close in an 8-5 loss to the Frisco RoughRiders at Riverfront Stadium. Wichita scored three straight through the eighth and ninth innings to show some fight against the top team in the Texas League.

Frisco struck first in the top of the first on a Cody Freeman RBI single to left, bringing around Alejandro Osuna from second.&nbsp;Ben Ross&nbsp;followed in the bottom of the second on a run-scoring knock of his own that found the center field grass in front of Osuna where&nbsp;Carson McCusker&nbsp;beat the throw to the plate.

Josh Hatcher drilled a three-run blast, his seventh of the season, to straightaway center in the top of the third to put the RoughRiders ahead 4-1. Keyber Rodriguez added one more on a single, which he pulled to left to give Frisco a four-run lead through two and a half.

Jeferson Morales&nbsp;found the gap in right-center for his team-leading 18th double of the season, giving&nbsp;Jake Rucker&nbsp;the green light to come around from first in the bottom of the fifth.

Max Acosta tallied the tenth hit for the RoughRiders on an RBI single sent near Morales in left. Aaron Zavala crossed the plate, and Acosta moved up 90 feet with two outs in the top of the seventh. Frainyer Chavez doubled in two more two batters later toward the right field corner, putting Frisco up 8-2 heading into the stretch.

Morales led off the bottom of the eighth on a triple to right field before scoring on a wild pitch to put the Wind Surge within five. Former NFL star Lawrence Taylor charged with failing to update address on sex offender registry

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — Hall of Fame linebacker Lawrence Taylor has been charged in Florida with failing to update his address on the state's sex offender registry. Court records show the former New York Giants linebacker turned himself in to the Broward County Sheriff's Office on Wednesday and was released with no bail. He entered a not guilty plea. It's the second time he's been charged with the offence. Taylor pleaded guilty in New York in 2011 to misdemeanor sexual misconduct charges. He was sentenced to six years of probation and ordered to register as a sex offender.

Allisha Gray becomes first player to win both 3-point and skills competition at WNBA All-Star

PHOENIX (AP) — Allisha Gray became the first player in WNBA history to win both the 3-point and skills competition in the same year, capturing both titles Friday night. The Atlanta Dream guard topped Jonquel Jones 22-21 in the 3-point shootout finals after edging Sophie Cunningham in the skills competition by just over 2 seconds. Jones was looking to become the first post-player to win the 3-point contest. She also made the finals in 2021 before losing to four-time champion Allie Quigley. Jones had a chance to win the contest, but her last shot — the two-point money — ball fell short. She scored 25 points in the opening round — tops amongst the five competitors. Gray had 23 points.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. - The Hutchinson Monarchs put together timely hitting in the first two innings of their Friday night home stand game versus the Kingman Islanders to take a 2-0 lead and then got superb pitching from both their starter Cole Toureau and three strong innings of relief from Jack Mount to edge the Islanders for a 2-1 victory.

In doing so, the Monarchs clinched a tie for the Jayhawk Summer League second half Championship. 30 minutes later they celebrated winning the league outright when they found out the Wichita Dirtbags had defeated the Kansas Cannons 3-2.

Will Edmundson tripled with one out in the bottom of the first and then was sacrificed home by Blake Bradford to give Hutch the early 1-0 lead.

Mac Bowie then earned his first hit and RBI as a Monarch to score Zurich Warren in the second inning for the Monarchs second run to lead 2-0. Bowie also advanced to third on a successful hit-and-run by Brett Smajstrla but was stranded at third as Cooper Wesslund ground out to third for the final out of the inning.

But that was all the offense that the Monarchs needed as &nbsp;Toureau was extremely sharp stricking out seven Islanders over the course of the six inning he pitched only giving up one run and two hits in his outing to earn the win. Jack Mount slammed the door shut on Kingman with three perfect innings of relief including stricking out the side in the seventh inning and getting five strikeouts over his three innings of relief.

Kingman's Mason Munz was just as impressive in giving up only four hits in his seven innings pitched but the Bowie RBI in the second inning was enough for Hutch to get the win.

The next and final regular season game of the 2024 will be Saturday night versus Kingman again with first pitch at 7pm.

It was announced that the Monarchs will begin the task of defending their 2023 NBC World Series Championship on Thursday, July 25th at 6pm vs an opponent to be announced later at Eck Stadium on the campus of Wichita State University to open the 90th annual NBC World Series for 2024.

 </figure>HUTCHINSON, Kan. - The Hutchinson Monarchs put together timely hitting in the first two innings of their Friday night home stand game versus the Kingman Islanders to take a 2-0 lead and then got superb pitching from both their starter Cole Toureau and three strong innings of relief from Jack Mount to edge the Islanders for a 2-1 victory.In doing so, the Monarchs clinched a tie for the Jayhawk Summer League second half Championship. 30 minutes later they celebrated winning the league outright when they found out the Wichita Dirtbags had defeated the Kansas Cannons 3-2.Will Edmundson tripled with one out in the bottom of the first and then was sacrificed home by Blake Bradford to give Hutch the early 1-0 lead.Mac Bowie then earned his first hit and RBI as a Monarch to score Zurich Warren in the second inning for the Monarchs second run to lead 2-0. Bowie also advanced to third on a successful hit-and-run by Brett Smajstrla but was stranded at third as Cooper Wesslund ground out to third for the final out of the inning.But that was all the offense that the Monarchs needed as &nbsp;Toureau was extremely sharp stricking out seven Islanders over the course of the six inning he pitched only giving up one run and two hits in his outing to earn the win. ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs have set a deadline of six months from now to decide on a plan for the future of Arrowhead Stadium, whether that means renovating their iconic home or building an entirely new stadium in Kansas or Missouri.

After a joint ballot initiative with the Royals to help fund facilities by extending a sales tax was rejected by voters in Jackson County, Missouri, earlier this year, the teams agreed to move forward with separate plans. Now, they are waiting for the leaders in both states that comprise the Kansas City metro to put forward their best pitches.

<a href="https://apnews.com/article/kansas-city-chiefs-royals-new-stadiums-3441b3084c8efab00057f593f4d9b95e">Legislators in Kansas approved a plan</a>&nbsp;last month that would finance up to 70% of the cost of new stadiums for pro sports franchises with an eye on luring the Chiefs across the state line. Missouri Gov. Mike Parson responded a week later by saying he expects his state to put together an aid plan by the end of the year to keep the teams on its side of the metro.

“This is a generational decision. This is going to impact the future of this franchise for generations,” Chiefs president Mark Donovan said Friday, the day that veterans reported to training camp at Missouri Western in St. Joseph, Missouri.

“We have to get this right,” Donovan said. “We are going to do the due-diligence. We are going to take our time and do it right. But there is a reality to the timing. You can only take so much time to get it right. And that window is starting to close.”

The Chiefs and Royals have played for more than five decades at the Truman Sports Complex, where a lease agreement calls for the use of a sales tax for their upkeep. And while Arrowhead Stadium and Kauffman Stadium remain beloved by fans, the reality is both are becoming outdated, and it’s unclear how long they would last even if they were renovated again.

Royals owner John Sherman has said his team will not play at Kauffman beyond the 2030 season, preferring instead to build a new downtown ballpark. The Chiefs initially hoped to renovate Arrowhead but are becoming more open to building new.

Chiefs owner Clark Hunt has long hoped to host a Super Bowl, and that would be more likely with a new stadium. If it included a retractable roof, the stadium also could land lucrative events such as the Final Four and college football playoff games.

One factor working against Missouri is its uncertain political environment. Parson cannot run for reelection due to term limits, and that means the Chiefs must wait until later this fall to know who they would be working with going forward.

“Really the deadline is how can you be up and running in a new facility or a renovated facility for January of the 2031 season,” Donovan said. “You’re looking at an existing structure, something we’ve done a lot of work on, there is a little less lead time. If you are talking about something new, it extends the lead time a year and a half. So we feel like we’re in the window now to get something done in the next six months to be in a good position. That’s the timeline we’re working on.”

Donovan said another factor in the decision is quite simple: real estate.

If the Chiefs build new, they want enough land for 20,000 parking spaces, so the franchise can retain its well-known tailgating tradition. They also would have to decide whether a new training facility — their current one is located near Arrowhead Stadium but is also becoming outdated — would be built near a potential new stadium or stand alone elsewhere.

“It’s important to understand that we are playing Chiefs football home games at GEHA Field at Arrowhead (into) 2031. That is our plan,” Donovan said. “What we have to have is somewhere to play our games for the ’31 season. To do that, we have to back up to, when do you build? If you’re renovating, how do you do it over multiple seasons while still playing there? A lot of factors go into that. We need to have options, and we need to have those options to a point of definition to make a decision.”

The official start to Chiefs Training Camp is just around the corner as rookies and quarterbacks wrapped up their final practice today at Missouri Western State University.

Chiefs President Mark Donovan says it's exciting to be back in St. Joseph and on the Missouri Western campus for another year of camp.

"There's a lot of excitement within our organization, there's a lot of excitement around the team, the players, the coach's, etc., they're excited to be back," Donovan tells reporters. "And they're excited to be back in St. Joe who just treat us so well every single year, there's a reason we keep coming back."

As Chiefs Training Camp begins a looming question is will the reigning Super Bowl champions return to St. Joseph next year.

This is the last guaranteed year Missouri Western is under contract to host the Chiefs for training camp.

When asked if the Chiefs would like to return, Donovan counters with the question why wouldn't they?

"It's been a great partnership, it's been something that as I said we're proud to have been here 14 of the last 15 years, we expect that to continue," Donovan says. "We'll do what we always do, and it's a great relationship, because we will get through this camp (and) at the end of camp we'll sit down and talk about what went well, where are the challenges, what was better this year than last year, what was worse than last year, what can we do to improve?"

As for this year's camp, the first practice open to the public is on Sunday at 9:15. There will be a $5 admission fee and tickets must be acquired online.

Final practice for rookies and quarterbacks provides extra opportunity

Ahead of the official start to Chiefs Training Camp at Missouri Western rookies and quarterbacks had one final practice before the full team reports to campus.

Several veterans, including Patrick Mahomes and Carson Wentz, sat out today to give younger players valuable reps.

Quarterback Chris Oladokuen says while getting extra reps is great, everyone is critical.

"It's good to see live color and then go in there and get in the classroom and see and make those corrections," Oladokun tells reporters following practice. "It's really important for me especially, when Pat and Carson come back those reps get pretty short, so every rep is critical for me."

TROON, Scotland —Former Hutchinson Community College golfer Dominic Clemons' first-ever major championship came to a close on Friday at the Royal Troon Golf Club.

Clemons missed the cut at the 152nd edition of The Open Championship after carding a 7-over 78 second round on Friday.

The former NJCAA All-American finished tied for 136th overall with a 13-over two-day total.&nbsp;

Clemons did finish above some notable names on the leaderboard, including Tiger Woods (+14), Wyndham Clark (+16) and John Daly (Withdrew).
