MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Brenden Hausen knocked down six treys and scored 22 points to lead Kansas State to a 77-64 win over Cleveland State Saturday despite not scoring a point over the final two minutes.

Max Jones knocked down his only 3-pointer of the game with 2:11 left to give the Wildcats a 77-57 lead, David Castillo and Taj Manning both missed from beyond the arc in the final minutes.

Jones opened the game by tipping in his own missed layup, but Chase Robinson answered less than a minute later to get the Vikings even. Kansas State then rolled off eight straight points to take the lead for good. Coleman Hawkins hit two free throws midway through the half to push the lead to double digits and the Wildcats led by a dozen, 36-24, at intermission.

David N'Guessan and Hawkins each finished with 12 points and Jones added 11 for Kansas State (2-0). The Wildcats shot an efficient 26 of 45 from the field (57.8%) and was 10 of 19 from beyond the arc while collecting 16 assists on 26 made baskets.

Dylan Arnett scored 10 points and Je'Shawn Stevenson added another 10 off the bench for Cleveland State (1-2), which lost its second straight road game. The Vikings where held to just 23-of-60 shooting from the floor (38.2%), including 6 of 18 from long range.

The Blue Dragons struggled early on, but took advantage of 29 Bluejay turnovers, scoring 29 points off of them.

Hutchinson (3-0) finished the game with 21 steals, four each from Dylan Alexander, Madi Denison, and Kahlen Norris.

Landon Forbes scored a career-high 16 points in the win, while also recording three steals. Brynne Katcher finished with 13 points, knocking down all six free throw attempts.

The Blue Dragons dominated in the paint, outscoring the Bluejays, 44-12. HutchCC finished with 23 fast break points and 35 points from the bench.

HutchCC out-rebounded Tabor, 44-29, including 17 offensive rebounds.

Tabor was led by Ellie McKellips with six points, all coming in the first half.

The Blue Dragons will host Murray State College (4-0) on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. in the Sports Arena, as part of the BSN Sports Tip-off Classic.

🏀 No. 1 Dragons too much for Bluejays

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Hunter Dickinson had 20 points and 10 rebounds for No. 1 Kansas, which blew a 20-point first-half lead against No. 9 North Carolina before holding on for a 92-89 victory when the Tar Heels’ Elliot Cadeau missed a 3-pointer as time expired Friday night.

Zeke Mayo had 21 points and KJ Adams Jr had 14 for the Jayhawks (2-0), who led 49-29 in the first half but trailed 87-83 with 3:28 to go. Dickinson and Mayo responded with a series of baskets to tie the game at 89, and Dickinson’s basket with 1:15 to go and free throw with 12 seconds remaining made it a three-point game.

The Tar Heels (1-1) raced up the floor, but Cadeau’s 3 from the wing was contested and never had a chance.

Seth Trimble scored 19 points to lead North Carolina. RJ Davis had 16 points and Cadeau finished with 12.

It was just the 13th matchup of the Tar Heels and Jayhawks, and first since Kansas rallied from a 16-point deficit to win the 2022 national championship. The only other time they have met on campus was in 1960, when Larry Brown — who would later coach the Jayhawks to the 1988 title — helped the Tar Heels win in Allen Fieldhouse.

Kansas made a repeat seem unlikely when it built a 20-point first-half lead.

But the Tar Heels trimmed the deficit in the second half, and Jae'Lyn Withers' 3-pointer gave them an 80-79 lead with 7:06 to go. The two bluebloods wrestled it away several other times before Kansas finally put the game away.

North Carolina stayed alive by getting to the basket and drawing fouls, ultimately going 28 of 31 from the line. But the lack of production in the paint was a big problem.

Kansas avoided what would have been the biggest blown-lead loss in school history.

Dickinson's basket inside with 1:15 left gave Kansas the lead, and the All-American center's free throw forced North Carolina into needing a 3-pointer to tie the game.

North Carolina plays American next Friday night. The Jayhawks play Michigan State on Tuesday night in Atlanta.

The Blue Dragons got off to a solid start in head coach Kyle Fisher's first season with a 104-53 victory over Hesston College on Tuesday night.

Hutchinson shot 50.7 percent while holding the Larks to 24.2 percent shooting from the floor.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2024-25/bios/cannon_bobby_1l4l">Bobby Cannon</a>&nbsp;came off the bench to lead the Blue Dragons with 15 points, leading five players to score in double figures.

The Blue Dragons play Southwestern Christian for the first time on Friday night. The Rams are a Division I Region 5 team from Terrell, Texas. The Rams dropped a 69-68 season-opening decision to Paris and lost 84-76 to Tyler. The Rams defeated Division III opponent Mountain View 98-92 on Wednesday.

Labette suffered a pair of big losses last weekend - 84-39 to Cowley and 109-56 to Independence. The Cardinals earned their first victory with a 93-66 win over the Southwestern College JV on Tuesday in Parsons.

Hutchinson is 4-0 in the BSN Sports Tip-Off Classic.

The Blue Dragons extended their overall winning streak to 39 games and home-court winning streak to 17 games on Tuesday with a wild 122-70 victory over Neosho County.

MANHATTAN, Kan. — For the fourth time in her career, K-State senior center Ayoka Lee has been named to the Los Angeles Athletic Club John R. Wooden Award, presented by Principal, Preseason Women's Top 50 Watch List.

Lee was previously named to the Wooden Award Watch List in the 2021, 2022 and 2024 seasons. The product of Byron, Minnesota, was named to the Wood Award National Ballot in the 2022 and 2024 seasons.

The players on the list are considered strong candidates for the 2025 John R. Wooden Award® Women's Player of the Year. The National Ballot consists of 15 top players who have proven to their universities that they meet or exceed the qualifications of the Wooden Award®. Wooden Award™ voters will rank in order 10 of those 15 players when voting opens prior to the NCAA Tournament and will allow voters to take into consideration performance during the tournament's early round games. The Wooden Award All-American Team™ will be announced the week of the "Elite Eight" round of the NCAA Tournament. The winner of the 2025 John R. Wooden Award®, presented by Principal, will be presented at the Los Angeles Athletic Club on April 11, 2025.

MANHATTAN, Kan. &ndash; Using a strong first half from&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/temira-poindexter/11861" rel="smarttag">Temira Poindexter</a>, (13/13) K-State eased past Belmont, 82-56, at Bramlage Coliseum on Thursday night. Poindexter led all scorers with 23 points, including 19 in the first half which featured five 3-pointers. The forward from Sapulpa, Oklahoma, finished 9-of-16 from the field including 5-of-11 from long range. She also filled up her stat line with four rebounds, two assists, two steals and two blocks. Senior forward&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/kennedy-taylor/11860" rel="smarttag">Kennedy Taylor</a> made her first K-State start and responded with 18 points, including 12 in the second half, on 6-of-10 shooting and a 6-of-8 effort from the foul line and hauled in five rebounds. There are things she needs to improve, she&apos;s got improved defensively. She had a stretch tonight where I didn&apos;t think she played through fatigue very well. She&apos;s got to play through that fatigue better. HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutch High Salthawks put a complete game together on Thursday night at Gowans Stadium, winning over the Liberal Redskins in 5A playoff action 33-13.

Hutchinson stopped Liberal on a fourth down and then converted on their own fourth down in the red zone for a Jeremiyah Gaitho Karanu seven-yard touchdown and a 7-0 Salthawk lead.

After another Salthawk stand, Kade Smith sprinted down the near sideline for an 86-yard score and it was 14-0 Hutchinson with 11:32 before halftime.

Liberal's best play of the night was at the 10:39 mark of half number one when freshman quarterback Tevin Cotter found James Fieser for a 65 yard strike to cut it to 14-7.

Hutchinson bounced back with a pass of their own from Levi Kepler to Tayshaun Williams, but Williams was flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct and therefore the long extra point was missed and it was 20-7 Salthawks with 6:05 to go in the half.

Taysen Runyon hit a pair of field goals, one to close out the first half and another with 2:38 to go in the third quarter and Hutch led 26-7 at that point.

Liberal's final score of the night was Cotter to Fieser again from six yards out, but they missed the two point try and it was 26-13.

Hutchinson closed out the scoring for the night with a Levi Kepler pass to Terrell King. After Runyon's PAT, it was 33-13 and that was the final.

Smith ran 24 times for 245 yards and the one TD. The Salthawk defense held Liberal to just 93 yards rushing and the Salthawks outgained the Redskins 406-275.

Hutchinson is now 8-2 and advances to play the winner of Friday night's game between Great Bend and Hays. Liberal closes out its season at 7-3.

The No. 14-ranked Hutchinson Community College women’s soccer team advanced to the Region 6/Plains District Tournament championship game for the first time since 2014, defeating No. 11 Butler 2-1 in a semifinal matchup on Thursday at BG Products Veterans Sports Complex.

Haley Rogers scored two goals, including a go-ahead penalty kick in the 59th minute, and goalkeeper Karsyn Slothower made 11 saves, including a spectacular game-saver with 6 minutes to play that was a milestone save for her.

Hutchinson (11-2-6) will play the winner of the other semifinal between Cowley and Kansas City – that game was played later Thursday – in the championship game at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday at Johnson County Community College in Overland Park.

The Blue Dragons will make their eighth appearance in the Region 6 Tournament championship game, the first since 2014. The Dragons are bidding for their fourth regional championship, the first since 2011. Hutchinson snapped a six-game Region VI Tournament losing streak to the Grizzlies.

Going against a northeast wind in the first half, the Blue Dragons posted only one shot on goal, but they made it count.

Katharina Marx received a ball outside the box and drove toward the net. With three Butler players converging on her, Marx deftly slid a pass to her left to an undefended Rogers, who fired into a wide-open goal for a 1-0 Hutchinson lead with 35:43 remaining in the opening half.

The Grizzlies outshot the Blue Dragons the 10-1 in the first half. Slothower made six saves in the opening half, but Butler got the equalizer when Sakiko Manabe bent a left-footed shot into the lower left corner of the goal to tie the game at 1-1 with 5:12 to play in the first half.

The Blue Dragons earned a corner kick opportunity entering the 59th minute. Rogers delivered low cross attempt that deflected right back to her. She then sent a cross into the box and a Butler player fouled her in the box just after the pass resulting in a penalty kick for Hutchinson.

Rogers fired her PK to the lower right corner and got it past Rylie Schiffelbein for a 2-1 Blue Dragon lead with 31:38 remaining in the second half. Rogers’ penalty kick was the fourth in Blue Dragon postseason soccer history and the first since 2018. Rogers joins Nicole Randall (Oct. 25, 2010 vs. Garden City), Jen Rogers (November 7, 2013 vs. Butler) and Brailey Moeder (October, 25, 2018 vs. Johnson County) as Blue Dragons with a postseason penalty kick.

Kansas City&rsquo;s schedule features 15 home games at Surprise Stadium, plus 3 games as the visiting team vs. the Rangers on Feb. 25, March 8 and March 22. Six of the 1st 8 home games will begin at 2:05 p.m. CT. Starting on Sunday, March 9, when Daylight Savings begins, 6 of the final 7 home games are scheduled for 3:05 p.m. CT. ⚾ Royals announce 2025 Spring Training home hame times

DODGE CITY, Kan. — The Hutchinson Community College volleyball team was eliminated from the Region 6 Tournament on Tuesday with an opening-round loss to Dodge City.

The sixth-seeded Blue Dragons fell 25-21, 25-16, 25-11 to the third-seed Conquistadors at the DC3 Student Activity Center.

Hutchinson’s season comes to a close with a 21-19 overall record.

The Blue Dragons were held to .021 hitting while Dodge City hit .381 for the match.

Freshman Atlyn Proctor had five kills to lead the Blue Dragons. Freshmen Brooke Galey and Kierny Follmer followed with four kills each. Sophomore Precious Johnson and redshirt freshman Tiana Simmons had three kills.

The Blue Dragons were out-blocked 7-4. Sophomore McKenzie Murphy had four total blocks, including one solo block.

Sophomore setter Shelbi Wilson closed with 18 assists.

Freshman libero Addy Foster had 13 digs. Hutchinson freshman digs record holder finished her season with 630 total digs. She moved past Samantha Lackey (2012) into second place on the Blue Dragon single-season digs list.

Galey had seven digs and Simmons had three digs.

SET 1: The Blue Dragons faced an early five-point deficit, but Ellie Suber’s ace serve pulled the Blue Dragons within 13-11. Three straight Dodge City errors got the Dragons within 15-14, then back-to-back Galey kills drew Hutchinson within 17-16. 🏐 HutchCC season ends in Region 6 

LAWRENCE, Kan. — Behind 20 points from S'Mya Nichols and 11 from Regan Williams, the Kansas Jayhawks claimed a 56-43 victory over Lindenwood on Wednesday night at Allen Fieldhouse. 

The win makes 2024-25 the eighth-consecutive season started with a victory for the Jayhawks, who improve to 46-11 all-time in season openers.

"I think the game was a tale of two halves," Kansas head coach Brandon Schneider said after the game. "I was pleased with what we did in the first half. They had some actions that we didn't know they were going to run that we navigated pretty good. But then the second half, I just thought they were way more aggressive than us on both ends of the floor. The reason we won this game is we happened to make a few more shots than they did."

Kansas opened the first quarter with strong defensive energy. After Lindenwood scored first to take a 2-0 lead, Kansas responded with a layup from Nichols to tie it at 2-2 at the 6:43 mark, sparking a momentum shift. Nichols then assisted Sania Copeland on a fast-break three-pointer, pushing Kansas ahead 5-2. Moments later, Copeland set up Brittany Harshaw for another three-pointer, which extended the lead to 8-2. The low-scoring quarter ended with Kansas on top 11-5.

In the second quarter, Kansas maintained its defensive intensity. The Jayhawks limited Lindenwood to 3-for-15 shooting in the second quarter and used a 15-0 run that spanned nearly six minutes to hold a 29-11 lead at halftime. The 11 points allowed in the first half marks the third-lowest scoring output in program history for a Kansas opponent in the first half of a game. It was also the fewest points by a KU opponent since Idaho State was held to 11 points in the first half of a contest on Nov. 11, 2002.

Lindenwood continued to give the Jayhawks problems in the second half, and outscored KU in both the third and fourth quarters. Kansas led by as much as 20 points in the game on four occasions, but Lindenwood cut the final deficit to 13 after outscoring KU 17-13 in the fourth quarter.

Nichols led the Jayhawks with 20 points and five assists, one off her career high. The sophomore was 7-of-11 from the field and hit 5-of-6 free throws in addition to knocking down one three-pointer. In her first official game action, Williams connected on 5-of-8 field goal attempts for 11 points, while adding five rebounds. Harshaw added nine points and and a team-high nine rebounds for the Jayhawks.

Kansas shot 43.1 percent (22-51) from the field and knocked down six three-pointers, while holding Lindenwood to 27.1 percent (16-59) shooting and just one made three. The Jayhawks outrebounded the Lions 38-to-37 and had 10 assists compared to three for LU.

Kansas hosts Sam Houston State on Monday, Nov. 11, for its second of four-straight games played at Allen Fieldhouse to open the regular season. Tipoff is slated for 6:30 p.m. CT on and will be broadcasted on ESPN+.

- Kansas led 29-11 at halftime, which ties for the third-fewest points allowed in the first half of a game in program history.

The win marked the first victory for first-year head coach Kyle Fisher.

All 11 players that played for Hutchinson (1-0) scored in the win, led by Bobby Cannon with 15 points and eight rebounds. Mikhail Abdul-Hamid, DJ Dudley and Bo Aldridge each had 14 points, while Khalil Arnold finished with 10 points.

Kobe Smith, the lone returner from last season, finished with seven points and a team-high 10 rebounds, while dishing off a team-high seven assists.

The Blue Dragons dominated the glass, out rebounding the Larks, 58-31, including 16 offensive rebounds.&nbsp;

Hutchinson turned the ball over just seven times in the win.

The Blue Dragons will face Southwestern Christian in the BSN Sports Tipoff Classic on Friday at 7:30 p.m. in the Hutchinson Sports Arena.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hailey Jackson scored a career-high 30 points, as No. 1 Hutchinson defeated Neosho County, 122-70, on Tuesday at the Hutchinson Sports Arena.

Jackson secured her fourth career double-double and second straight to start the season, finishing with a career-high 14 rebounds.

The 122 points scored are the third-most scored in a single-game in the 51-year of Blue Dragon women's basketball program history.&nbsp;

HutchCC (2-0) shot 50.7 percent from the floor, and knocked down 42 of 58 free throw attempts for 72 percent.&nbsp;
